The Michigan state Senator who went viral for her fiery response to a GOP colleague accusing her of being a “groomer” is reportedly considering a run for the National Democratic Committee chair. Politico reported Wednesday, Nov. 20, that state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, is considering throwing her hat in the ring to lead the national party. NPR on Thursday also reported “there’s talk” about the 38-year-old running. “If enough people ask, I’m leaving myself open to all kinds of opportunities,” McMorrow told Politico. McMorrow did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Current DNC Chair Jaime Harrison is not expected to seek another term, according to the Hill , which also reported that only Democratic former Maryland Gov. Martin O‘Malley and Minnesota state Democratic leader Ken Martin so far have announced they’re vying for the chair. The change in party leadership comes as Democrats try to move ahead from losing both the U.S. Senate and presidency on Nov. 5. McMorrow became one of the state’s most nationally known politicians in 2022, when video of her impassioned floor speech went viral. Related: Michigan Democrat has powerful response to GOP fundraising email claiming she grooms and sexualizes children In the speech, McMorrow was responding to a fundraising email from state Sen. Lana Theis, R-Brighton, that said the Democratic lawmaker wanted to “groom and sexualize kindergartners” and also wanted children to “feel bad about being white” and that they were responsible for slavery. “I want every child to feel seen, heard and supported, not marginalized and targeted because they are not straight, white and Christian,” McMorrow said in the speech. “We cannot let hateful people tell you otherwise to scapegoat and deflect from the fact that they are not doing anything to address the real issues that impact people’s lives.” “Groomer” or “grooming” is a term used to describe how a pedophile gains the trust of a minor to eventually sexually assault them. Within days of McMorrow posting a video of the speech on X, formerly Twitter, the speech had garnered more than 14 million views. X has since removed public view count totals. The speech catapulted the now second-term senator onto the national scene, with numerous donations from around the U.S. and national TV appearances following. MLive found that nearly 85% of the nearly $1.2 million McMorrow raised in 2022 , a reelection year for her, came from outside Michigan. Related: How Mallory McMorrow became a fundraising force in Michigan politics The attention also prompted speculation she would run this year for the open U.S. Senate seat, which she declined to . That wasn’t the end of the national attention, though. During the Democratic National Convention this summer, McMorrow made a primetime appearance on the first night of the convention . In that speech, she warned that President-elect Donald Trump would replace civil servants with loyalists and weaponize the U.S. Department of Justice to target political opponents. There could soon be another contest for an open party leadership seat, this one the chair of the Michigan Republican Party. Trump this week announced he was nominating Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra as the nation’s ambassador to Canada. The U.S. Senate must still confirm the nomination. Related: Michigan GOP chair Hoekstra nominated by Trump as ambassador to Canada Hoekstra previously served as the United States ambassador to the Netherlands under Trump’s last administration. He was elected as chair of the Michigan Republican Party earlier this year following the ouster of former chair Kristina Karamo.
Editor’s note: "Becoming a Digital Nomad" is part 11 of an ongoing series on how to retire early and the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. Part one is How to Retire Early in Six Steps . To see all early retirement articles, jump to the end. For 99% of human history, humans were nomads. Now, what’s old is new again as more people embrace a modern version of this lifestyle — replacing spears with laptops. These digital nomads leverage technology to work remotely while living location-independent lives, moving between destinations domestically or abroad. For early retirees, it’s a way to blend remote work or passive income with the flexibility to explore the world, enjoying the perks of early retirement without fully stepping away from work. Profit and prosper with the best of expert advice - straight to your e-mail. Digital nomads as part of the FIRE movement The nomadic lifestyle aligns with the F.I.R.E. (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. Many nomads choose low-cost countries as their base, reducing expenses and investing their savings for long-term financial growth. According to MBO Partners , 18.1 million Americans — about 11% of the U.S. workforce — identify as digital nomads. As Carl Sagan put it: “We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still.” Take Michael Wardian , a professional ultramarathon runner who ran 2,197 miles of the Appalachian Trail in just 50 days to celebrate his 50th birthday. The twist? He worked remotely the entire time, overseeing humanitarian food aid cargo as an international shipping broker. “Working remotely while running solidified my belief that if you’re dedicated and not afraid to ask for help, anything is possible... you can still do your job and chase your dreams simultaneously,” he says. If retiring early and becoming a digital nomad sounds appealing, careful planning is key. Here’s how to keep both your finances and your wanderlust on track. Financial Planning for Digital Nomads Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, founder of Making Sense of Cents , embraced a nomadic lifestyle after turning her personal finance blog into a full-time business. “Becoming a digital nomad allowed me to combine my love for travel with a career I could take anywhere,” she says. She now travels full-time on a sailboat with her family. Schroeder-Gardner emphasizes the importance of diversified, location-independent income streams, like earnings from her blog and dividend-paying stocks . CFP Board Ambassador Elaine King Fuentes agrees: “Have multiple income streams — a mix of service, like consulting and product-based businesses.” Both stress the need for emergency funds to cover unexpected expenses like medical emergencies or last-minute flights. Fuentes, who has lived and worked in multiple countries, adds, “Start with an emergency fund of at least one month’s expenses, and create a dedicated travel fund to support this lifestyle.” Managing retirement savings abroad presents additional challenges. U.S. citizens must pay federal taxes on worldwide income and may face account restrictions from U.S.-based brokerages. Fuentes suggests maintaining a U.S. address or using global banks like Charles Schwab or E-trade Morgan Stanley that offer fee-free international ATM withdrawals. For day-to-day money management, Schroeder-Gardner advises using travel-friendly credit cards with no foreign transaction fees . Fuentes also suggests multi-currency accounts to mitigate currency risks. Navigating taxes and legal considerations No matter where you go, the IRS follows. Fuentes encourages people to research tax rules in their home country and planned destinations, as “tax treaties can impact the duration of your stay.” U.S. citizens living abroad are taxed on worldwide income, but credits like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (up to $126,500 in 2024 and $130,000 in 2025) and the Foreign Tax Credit can help offset double taxation. Tax treaties between countries may further simplify filing requirements. Domestically, state taxes depend on primary residency. States like Texas and Florida have no state income tax, while others, like California, aggressively pursue tax liabilities even for those living out of state. Other states do not tax retirement income . Establishing clear domicile records is crucial for defending your obligations. Beyond taxes, research visa requirements for each destination. Some countries offer retirement-specific visas with income or asset requirements, while others allow longer stays with tourist visas. “Keeping important documents in cloud storage is a must,” says Schroeder-Gardner. Digitize essentials like passports, visas and tax returns to stay prepared on the move. Healthcare and insurance while traveling Early retirees under 65 won’t have access to Medicare , so you’ll need alternative health coverage. If not covered by remote work, the Affordable Care Act marketplace is one option. Many countries offer affordable, high-quality care, and some allow foreigners to join their public systems. Fuentes recommends exploring international health plans from providers like Cigna Global or IMG, which cover routine care, emergencies and medical evacuations. Travel medical insurance is also critical. Schroeder-Gardner notes, “Travel insurance has become a must for us.” Look for policies that include medical emergencies, trip cancellations and personal liability. And if you plan to bring medications with you on international travel , don't risk having them confiscated at the border. For those planning to travel abroad, consider focusing your trip on the safest countries to visit . Remote work: staying connected and productive Reliable internet is the foundation of remote work. Schroeder-Gardner ensures connectivity by researching options in advance and carrying backup solutions like multiple mobile hotspots. Similarly, Wardian relied on portable technology during his Appalachian Trail journey. “T-Mobile coverage for my phones and my Surface laptop worked surprisingly well, even in remote sections,” he says. Coworking spaces can also provide stable internet and a professional environment. To protect sensitive data, consider a VPN when working on public Wi-Fi. Adjusting to the digital nomad lifestyle Becoming a digital nomad requires more than packing a laptop — it’s a lifestyle adjustment. Schroeder-Gardner advises starting with short trips to test the waters. “This helps you gauge the impact on your financial and social life,” she says. Maintaining social connections is just as important as staying online. “Being a digital nomad can sometimes feel isolating, so finding online groups or meeting other travelers can make the experience more fulfilling,” she adds. Adjusting to constant change takes time. Wardian found success by creating a system with his team before hitting the trail. “I made myself available as much as possible for work tasks while staying flexible with my running schedule,” he says. For Schroeder-Gardner, “I plan my work schedule around travel activities, dedicating specific blocks of time to focus. ... But for the most part, I try to save the best weather days for traveling and experiencing a new destination.” Ultimately, flexibility may be the greatest need and perk of this lifestyle. You never know when the mountains, beaches or new cities will call and you must go. After all, that’s what we’ve been doing for most of our history. How to fix it remains up for debate. Logano won his third Cup Series championship earlier this month, re-igniting the conversation about whether the current playoff format is the best way to determine a worthy champion. Logano wound up winning four races this season, but only had 13 top 10 finishes in 37 races and clearly didn't have one of the best cars over the course of the season. Logano, it seemed, did just enough to get by. He got his share of breaks, too, using what amounted to a Hail Mary win in Nashville — stretching his empty fuel tank through five overtimes — to qualify for the postseason. He was actually eliminated from playoff contention in the second round, only to be reinstated after a competitor's car was ruled to be illegal. People are also reading... Logano's run to the title has left some drivers wanting to see the system altered, with suggestions ranging from minor tweaks to major changes. "I think the message we are trying to send is: Make the regular season matter more," said Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 car for Joe Gibbs Racing and a co-owner of the 23XI Racing team. He suggested increasing the bonus points a driver gets during the regular season. "The (Christopher) Bells, (Kyle) Larsons, they deserve to have a really good buffer there to make it through the (playoff) rounds," Hamlin said. "We're in a sport where you can get caught up in so many wrecks and different things that can happen. ... There are 26 (regular season) races and they are proving to be not that substantial to winning a championship and that's not something you want." Hamlin suggested that over the past three years the Team Penske champions — Logano twice and Ryan Blaney once — "didn't have to do much" during the regular season. "And that's probably not good," Hamlin added. NASCAR likes the current playoff system because of the emphasis it places on each race heading down the final stretch of the season in its never-ending quest for Game 7 moments. Stock car racing's governing body remains open to tweaking the format — if it improves the sport. "I love that aspect of it," Bell said of the emphasis on the playoff races, "but maybe adjusting the points systems to make sure we get the right cars into the championship event would be awesome." Blaney said it's up to drivers to adapt the rules in place. But he said in his "ideal world" he'd like to see the top 16 drivers on points in the regular season qualify for the playoffs. He said race winners should get 10 or 15 points instead of five, and that the regular-season champion should get an additional 30 points. Blaney's final suggestion involves fewer elimination races. He suggested the 16-car field should be cut to eight after five playoff races, with the remaining eight drivers competing over the final five races for the championship. "I would like to see a group of races to end the year where you are not going to have anyone run away with it and you're going to have three to five races and you're still going to have some really good competition going on," Blaney said. Logano just shakes his head and offers a sarcastic smile at all the tweak talk. He was emphatic about the system not needing to be changed after his clinching win at Phoenix and didn't stray from that conviction at last Friday's annual awards ceremony in Charlotte. When asked if there are any changes that need to be made, Logano replied, "Nothing, personally. I wouldn't change a thing," adding that he thinks the format is "super entertaining." Of course, if you've won three championships since 2018, why would you want to change? "I think we all need to understand why we changed it in the first place, it's because the fans said they didn't like the way it was, so we changed it," Logano said. "And then everybody loved it. And it was great. And now, oh, we're going to complain about it again? C'mon, guys. Geez." Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!

The Bachelor star, 37, took to social media with a weepy selfie the night before Christmas. Matty's right eye is red and swollen and he sported a five-o-clock shadow in the relatable post. 'The antibiotics are working...I think,' the father-of-two wrote as he posed with a half-hearted thumbs up. Matty and his wife Laura Byrne have been busy renovating a 'rundown' coastal property which they purchased in August. The reality TV lovebirds put tools down for the holidays, though as Matty hit the beach with his two daughters for an ocean dip and then Laura revved up the party at North Bondi RSL. Laura Byrne let her hair down as she hit the pub stage at North Bondi RSL on Christmas Eve The 38-year-old podcaster let her hair down as she hit the pub stage to dance in a summery white linen pant and bandeau top set. It comes after she split the nation with her highly controversial stance on what the best Christmas chocolate is earlier this week. Laura took to Instagram to crown the Ferrero Rocher, as she filmed a beautifully wrapped gift box. Inside the mixed collection of the brand's biggest hits is the classic hazelnut version, the white chocolate and coconut Raffaello and the dark choc Rondnoir. 'The white Raffaello is the best,' the radio star insisted in her video, adding that the hazelnut is 'delicious' but the dark chocolate version 'kind of sucks'. Laura then invited her followers to vote on which the best of the three is, with the votes divided. The Ferrero Rocher gift box is a Christmas staple and is usually on sale around Christmas time at popular supermarkets. As of late Monday evening, the votes sat at 54 per cent preferring the classic milk hazelnut, 38 per cent loving the white and only 9 per cent picking the dark. Laura Byrne (pictured) sparked a fierce debate on Monday night. The reality TV couple have gone with a throwback 1970s style for the space, with mid-century stained wood cabinets matching the light brown tiles of the floor. But their extensive remodel has faced many issues since they started overhauling the home from termites to wood rot and mould. Laura posted a behind-the-scenes video showing how they had stripped the rundown property to its bare bones and revealed the shocking discoveries they found. 'There was no way of really knowing what this Reno had in store for us, or how comprehensive the rebuild was going to have to be until we started pulling off walls and pulling up the carpet,' she shared. 'We've been met with termites, white ants, wood rot, mould and more than a couple of snakes along the way - but finally she is taking shape and we are slowly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.' Dubbing the house the Chante-Mer - which means 'Sing the Sea' in French - Laura also told how construction had to stop for a week so exterminators could rid the site of pests. 'We had to replace all of the walls and internal structures throughout the kitchen,' she continued. Despite the challenges, Laura remained positive and told how they plan to transform the neglected beach house into a luxury three-bedroom, two-bathroom home. Located on a clifftop in Ulladulla on the far south coast of NSW 226kms from Sydney , the old two-storey dwelling offers amazing water views. The home last changed hands in 1984 for a mere $62,500 and Laura and Matty splashed out $2.19million on buying it in August. The location holds special meaning for the happy couple, who tied the knot in 2022 at Cupitts Estate Winery, just down the road from their new holiday home. The home is set on 746 sqm overlooking Racecourse Beach and previously belonged to United Nations simultaneous conference translator Valerie Barnes, who died in 2021 aged 94.
