Arsenal delivered the statement Champions League win Mikel Arteta had demanded as they swept aside Sporting Lisbon 5-1. Arteta wanted his team to prove their European credentials following some underwhelming displays away from home, and the Gunners manager got exactly what he asked for. Goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard got their continental campaign back on track in style following the 1-0 defeat at Inter Milan last time out. A memorable victory also ended Sporting’s unbeaten start to the season, a streak of 17 wins and one draw, the vast majority of which prompted Manchester United to prise away head coach Ruben Amorim. The Gunners had failed to win or score in their two away games in the competition so far this season, but they made a blistering start in the Portuguese capital and took the lead after only seven minutes. Declan Rice fed overlapping full-back Jurrien Timber, who curled a low cross in behind the home defence for Martinelli to finish at the far post. Arsenal doubled their lead in the 20th minute thanks to a glorious ball over the top from Thomas Partey. Saka escaped the clutches of his marker Maximiliano Araujo to beat the offside trap and poke the ball past advancing goalkeeper Franco Israel for Havertz to tap home. It was a scintillating first-half display which completely overshadowed the presence of Viktor Gyokeres in Sporting’s attack. The prolific Sweden striker, formerly of Coventry, has been turning the heads of Europe’s top clubs with his 24 goals in 17 games this season – including a hat-trick against Manchester City earlier this month. But the only time he got a sniff of a run at goal after an optimistic long ball, he was marshalled out of harm’s way by Gabriel. David Raya was forced into one save, tipping a fierce Geovany Quenda drive over the crossbar. But Arsenal added a third on the stroke of half-time, Gabriel charging in to head Rice’s corner into the back of the net. Our second-half goalscorers ❤️ pic.twitter.com/aFCIMffFaK — Arsenal (@Arsenal) November 26, 2024 To rub salt in the wound, the Brazilian defender mimicked Gyokeres’ hands-over-his-face goal celebration. That may have wound Sporting up as they came out after the interval meaning business, and they pulled one back after Raya tipped Hidemasa Morita’s shot behind, with Goncalo Inacio netting at the near post from the corner. Former Tottenham winger Marcus Edwards fired over, as did Gyokeres, with Arsenal temporarily on the back foot. But when Martin Odegaard’s darting run into the area was halted by Ousmane Diomande’s foul, Saka tucked away the penalty. Substitute Trossard added the fifth with eight minutes remaining, heading in the rebound after Mikel Merino’s shot was saved, and Gyokeres’ miserable night was summed up when his late shot crashed back off the post.
British Columbia’s top Mountie says rolling out body-worn cameras for officers in the province will address calls to “enhance public trust,” but a sociologist who studies technology’s effect on policing says evidence of it reducing use-of-force incidents is “inconsistent.” Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, commanding officer of the RCMP’s E Division in B.C., said Thursday that the initiative to have front-line officers in B.C. wear the cameras is the “largest and most ambitious rollout of body cameras across the province.” “The introduction of the cameras is now the national standard for the RCMP and addresses calls I’ve personally heard from local, regional, Indigenous and provincial leaders to address the overall need to enhance public trust (and) confidence in policing,” McDonald said. He said the introduction of the cameras and the evidence-management system to handle the digital data they collect “is expected to provide transparency to strengthen accountability and to enhance officer and public safety.” Insp. Ted Lewko, the officer in charge of the RCMP detachment in Mission, B.C., said Thursday that he’s grateful that Mounties in his community will be among the first to wear body cameras to record police interactions with the public. Lewko said 44 cameras will be used by his officers starting next week, and he’s “very hopeful” that they will improve officer safety, strengthen trust with the public and help resolve complaints more quickly. Police said during a news conference in Surrey that thousands of Mounties across B.C. will soon be fitted with the devices. About 300 cameras will be issued to officers in Mission first, then to other communities, including Tofino and Ucluelet on Vancouver Island, and Cranbrook, Kamloops and Prince George. The national deployment of body cameras is expected to be completed by the end of next year, and follows other law enforcement agencies in B.C. that have started employing body cameras, including in Vancouver and Delta. Chris Schneider, a sociology professor at Brandon University in Manitoba, studies how technology “contributes to changes in policing and police work.” Schneider said the evidence around whether body cameras reduce instances of use of force and police complaints is “inconsistent,” but research shows that “people feel safer with cameras.” “When you look at the actual evidence about reductions in crime and harm, they don’t coincide with people’s feelings,” he said. Schneider said police, government officials and the public have, in recent years, “shifted to discussions around accountability and transparency.” However, he said those two terms are usually measured in the social scientific or scientific research literature. “Meaning that there’s no way for us to actually know whether or not body worn cameras contribute to transparency and accountability,” he said. The $240 million supplied by the federal government for the program, and $50 million a year pledged to support the RCMP’s body cameras, could go to investments in “social infrastructure” including affordable housing, addiction rehabilitation institutions, job training, education and health care, he said. “The research literature is crystal clear that these things ... lead to concrete reductions in crime and reductions in harm and make communities better, happier and safer,” he said. Schneider said there are more effective, but more complex, ways of enhancing police accountability and transparency, such as strict policies around discipline for officer misconduct, as well as requiring officers to hold professional liability insurance. Officers found liable for misconduct would see their premiums rise, and too many occurrences would make carrying such insurance too expensive, he said. “The idea being that they could no longer afford to be police officers. All the bad apples go away. We’re only left with good cops. Problem solved,” he said. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 21, 2024.AAP legislator Naresh Balyan was arrested here on Saturday in connection with an extortion case lodged last year, police said. The MLA from Delhi's Uttam Nagar Assembly segment was called to the Delhi Police's Crime Branch office in R K Puram for questioning and was later arrested, they said. The development came hours after the BJP alleged that Balyan was involved in extortion activities and questioned why AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has not taken action against him. The Aam Aadmi Party defended Balyan, claiming that his arrest was illegal. The MLA had refuted the BJP's allegations and said he would lodge police cases against those who "spread lies" about him. A police official said that an audio clip of a conversation purportedly between Balyan and gangster Kapil Sangwan, currently based abroad, had gone viral on social media. The conversation involved discussions about collecting extortion money from businessmen, he said, adding further investigation and interrogation was underway. Article content Welcome to Ben’s World. Enter at your own risk. Recommended Videos One teacher learned the hard way. In a Zoom class, she was gushing about how cute and cuddly hippos are, like the dancing ones in Fantasia or huggable Gloria in the Madagascar films. Ben Haslam, 8, watching from home, squirmed in his wheelchair. “Take me off mute!” he barked to his mom, Christine. “Want to say something, Ben?” asked the unsuspecting teacher. “Yes. Have you gone mad?!” said Ben. “Hippos aren’t cute and cuddly. They are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. They are many things, but they are NOT cute and cuddly.” Ouch. Lesson learned. Don’t mess with Dr. Doolittle, even in Grade 3. Which brings us to the cafeteria at Variety Village. Ben is here with his mom, dad Tom, sister Isla, 5, and wee Jack, 2. Ben is on a zoological roll. “Did you know,” he asks, “that if you pee near a tiger, he’ll attack you?” I did not know that, though who could blame him? “Tigers are like skunks. They can spray urine up to 10 feet away. So, if a tiger turns his back on you, run away immediately.” Will do, kid. Now, let’s talk about baseba... “Do you know what a pangolin is?” A flightless bird in Antarctica? “No, it’s like an armadillo, though it’s not one. It’s basically a bigger armadillo, with a longer tail.” In Antarctica?! “In Africa and Asia.” Good. Much warmer. “How about an echidna?” I blink blankly. “It’s like a porcupine,” he explains patiently, “but with spikes all over.” “And did you know if you’re in the desert and you cut open a dead camel it actually will explode. It’s filled with explosive fat. It’s like a walking jerry can.” So, how about those Jays? I was told Ben was a stalwart in Variety’s Challenger Baseball program, sponsored by the Blue Jays’ foundation, Jays Care. It offers kids with disabilities baseball-themed games in a mini diamond on the Village grounds. A chance to play out fantasies of Series-winning homers. That why you joined, Ben? “My mom made me,” says the kid. There’s a twinkle in his eye. If your eyes are the gateway to your soul, it must be especially true when your physical self is so limited. In Ben’s case, they ought to charge admission to his brain. We’ll all be working for him some day. This is one witty, sharp, eight-year-old. Eclectic, too. He has a roomful of animal books, but is also reading the fantasy novel The Carpet People. His fave movie is Nicholas Cage’s horror flick Willy’s Wonderland. “It sounds like a happy movie, but it’s not.” Ben plays competitive video games. He beat his mom at bowling, using an adaptive ramp. At Variety Village, he prefers Volt hockey. The carts spin on a dime. The games are fast – and competitive. “You know what? I love my life,” he says. “I wouldn’t change anything about my life.” Not even to walk? “Maybe. But when I’m watching TV I don’t think about it. I mean, I know how to use the remote.” RECOMMENDED VIDEO There’s that twinkle again. We are lucky Ben is among us. At birth, he weighed two pounds. Code Blue. He spent a month at Sick Kids. Hole in his heart, collapsed lung, trouble breathing, the works. Brain imaging showed cerebral palsy. He arrived at Variety Village for therapy, at age 3. Now, he’s already written his first book, with a couple of school chums, called Dragon Slayer, set in a forest of giant celery. He plans to be a writer or animator – or a zookeeper. Or a power washer operator. Anything’s possible in Ben’s World. At Halloween, he was the Hulk. A kind of anti-hero like you, eh, Ben? “Did you say anteater?” Very funny, Dr. Doolittle. northchannelmike@gmail.com HOW TO HELP Variety Village is a highlight of Ben’s World. 'Decline In Jewellery Exports Is A Wake-Up Call': Gautam AdaniNormalcy returns in Kashmir after snow-led disruptions; Haryana, Rajasthan continue to shiverMcDonald’s is launching its new “McValue” menu for 2025, which includes its signature $5 meal. The fast-food company announced on Friday that a new menu — featuring breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals — will be officially offered in stores on January 5, 2025. The McValue menu will include the beloved $5 Meal Deal, which will be extended until at least summer 2025. The deal gives customers the choice of a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, a small fries, four-piece chicken nuggets, and a small soft drink — all, of course, for the price of $5. The brand is also launching a “Buy One, Add One for $1” special on the menu, where customers can buy one full-price item and then get a second item for $1. Customers won’t have to get the same two items on the menu; they can mix and match two things from these breakfast options: Sausage McMuffin, Sausage Biscuit, Sausage Burrito, and Hashbrowns. The lunch and dinner options for the “Buy One, Add for $1” deal include six-piece Chicken McNuggets, Double Cheeseburger, McChicken, and small fries. The McValue menu will also have drink and food deals available at local stores, depending on locations, and different offers will be available on the McDonald’s app. “When it comes to value, we know there’s no one-size-fits-all. We’ve worked closely with our franchisees to create a new platform that will let our customers define value on their own terms,” Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s USA, said in a statement. “From deals on their personal go-to order to universal favorites like the $5 Meal Deal, we’re excited to give fans more ways to save every time they visit one of our restaurants.” Cory Watson, McDonald’s Owner/Operator and National Value Chair for 2025, acknowledged that he’s still “always listening to what [their] customers want from their neighborhood McDonald’s.” “No matter the city or the state, they’re telling us how important it is for them to find their favorite meals at affordable prices. And we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we’re committed to continuing to serve up great local deals,” he added. McDonald’s introduced the $5 Meal Deal in June following a sales slump in its first quarter. The company faced another crisis in October following an E. coli outbreak tied to onions in its Quarter Pounder sandwiches. The company has since spent $100 million to lure customers back. Earlier this month, McDonald’s also announced the return of one of its fan favorites, the McRib, with the sandwich returning to US stores on December 3. As described by McDonald’s, the McRib is a “seasoned boneless pork dipped in a tangy BBQ sauce, topped with slivered onions and tangy pickles, all served on a toasted homestyle bun .” Customers will also be able purchase a half-gallon jug of the McRib sauce, aptly named “A Whole Lotta McRib Sauce.” According to McDonald’s, the jug is “perfect for holiday parties, festive recipes, or the ultimate stocking stuffer for McRib lovers.”
Diddy blasts prosecutors for 'destroying his reputation' as he makes third bid for release on bail LISTEN: The Trial of Diddy – bringing you the biggest and most shocking details from the rapper’s downfall each week. Available wherever you get your podcasts now By DANIEL BATES FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 15:23 EST, 21 November 2024 | Updated: 16:43 EST, 21 November 2024 e-mail 17 View comments Diddy has claimed that his 'reputation has been destroyed' as he made a third bail application while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges . The disgraced hip hop mogul said that the 'allegations and aggressive and deceptive media tactics' by prosecutors had already shredded his public image and only an acquittal could reverse that. Diddy claimed the charges that he ran a decade-long criminal enterprise were 'fictional' and that prosecutors were putting a 'theatrical spin' on the truth. The 55-year-old hitmaker, real name Sean Combs, sought to discredit his accusers - including his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura. Diddy said that a second 'victim' wasn't even a victim because she was 'voluntarily intimate with Mr Combs for years'. Diddy is accused of organizing orgies called 'Freak Offs' in which women were drugged and forced into marathon-long sex sessions, sometimes with male prostitutes . He has denied sex trafficking and racketeering among other charges and is due to go on trial in May of next year. Diddy has already been denied bail twice, including a $50million bail package involving round the clock monitoring by security guards and home detention . Sean 'Diddy' Combs, pictured in a September court sketch, submitted his third bail application while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges Lawyers for the disgraced rap mogul sought to discredit his accusers - including his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura , and claimed his second victim was ' voluntarily intimate' with him A hearing is due to take place on Friday at the federal court in New York for this third attempt to get free. In his third bail application, Diddy's lawyers wrote: 'Mr Combs fully intends to face these charges. 'The prospect of a conviction does not materially change his incentives here, where his reputation has already been destroyed by the government's allegations and aggressive and deceptive media tactics, and can only be rebuilt by winning at trial'. Diddy's legal team took aim at the two victims cited by prosecutors in their legal filings for the previous bail applications. They said that the 'narrative the government presented was fictional' and that they were putting a 'theatrical spin' on things. The filing criticized the security camera video of Diddy attacking Ventura at the Intercontinental Hotel on March 5, 2016, and claimed that the full version is not as damning as the version leaked to CNN. In fact, it was just a 'sad glimpse into a decade-long consensual relationship', the filing from Diddy's lawyers states. They said that the shocking footage was 'edited' and 'manipulated' in order to make it look worse than it was. The rapper has been accused of arranging 'Freak Offs,' described as 'elaborate and produced sex performances' arranged and directed by Combs The disgraced rap mogul remains incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after being repeatedly denied bail The incident was merely a 'domestic dispute in which he ran down the hall of the hotel to recover his clothes and cellphone'. Read More Diddy's chilling handwritten 'to do list' for family member seized in jail cell raid Nor is there 'one piece of evidence' backing up the claim Ventura was trafficked, the document states. Diddy's lawyers also say that there is 'no second victim at all' as the second victim in the indictment was 'voluntarily intimate with Mr Combs for years'. Prosecutors have argued that Diddy continues to obstruct justice while in prison, and that no set of bail conditions would stop him from influencing the jury and tampering with witnesses. They brought up a video his children posted on his birthday earlier this month as evidence that he is coordinating a 'public relations' campaign from behind bars. The filing criticized the security camera video of Diddy attacking Ventura at the Intercontinental Hotel on March 5, 2016, and claimed that the full version is not as damning His defense fired back at prosecutors claim that his children's birthday video for him on November 4 was for a 'public relations' campaign by saying they were 'grasping at straws' In their filing, Diddy's lawyers fired back and said: 'Grasping at straws, the government makes much of Mr Combs' request that his family make an Instagram post to celebrate his birthday. 'We do not believe that a social media post showing his family's love and birthday wishes violated the court's order, even if it presents him in a more positive light than the overwhelmingly unfavorable media coverage which has dominated the public narrative about Mr Combs for the past year'. During the hearing on Friday, the judge is expected to deal with questions about alleged prosecutorial misconduct which Diddy's lawyers say could lead to the case being dismissed. The dispute concerns notes seized by a Bureau of Prisons investigator during an October 28th raid on Diddy's cell in the Metropolitan Detention Centre (MDC) in Brooklyn, where he is being held . Prosecutors used some of the notes to argue that Diddy was still trying to obstruct justice by paying a female witness to make a positive statement about him on Instagram. Diddy's lawyers have claimed that this material is privileged and said in court this week that they need to find out more information before deciding what the remedy could be. But the matter is so serious that the case could need to be dismissed, or the team of four female prosecutors may need to be recused, defense attorney Marc Agnifilo said. Diddy was arrested on September 16 and has been in the MDC ever since then. He appeared relaxed in court during the hearing on Wednesday and was smiling and joking with his lawyers. Earlier this week, he was hit with five new civil lawsuits, the latest in a deluge which is expected to come to more than 100 when they are all filed. The new claims include one from a woman who says that she was drugged and raped at one of Diddy's infamous 'White Parties' in the Hamptons in New York . Diddy's lawyers deny all the civil allegations. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Greg Dulcich went from the Broncos' future to their past far quicker than either could have anticipated. The Broncos waived their once promising tight end Monday, less than three years after he was the team's third-round draft pick out of UCLA. The impetus for the move is the Broncos have two players on their injury lists who are ready to return. The deadline for activating outside linebacker Drew Sanders from the physically unable to perform list is Wednesday. Sanders was a third-round draft pick last year out of Arkansas. He has been out since blowing out his Achilles at the start of the team's offseason conditioning program in mid-April. Even if Sanders is not deemed up to speed to help on game day for a few more weeks, he is the type of promising prospect who would benefit from continued practice time. The Broncos also have veteran receiver Josh Reynolds on injured reserve with a fractured finger. Reynolds was initially thought to have a four-week injury, but it's now been seven weeks. His return was delayed first by the fact he was a victim in a drive-by shooting on Oct. 18 (he suffered minor physical injuries) and then the continued emergence of rookie receivers Devaughn Vele and Troy Franklin. Dulcich's stay with the Broncos was doomed at the start by what became a chronic hamstring injury. He missed the first five games of his rookie 2022 season because of the hamstring issue, then made a spectacular NFL debut in game six when he caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson in a 19-16 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers. Dulcich had 33 catches for 411 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games his rookie season, missing the final two games because of the recurring hamstring issue. Dulcich had a fantastic offseason in 2023 for new head coach Sean Payton, who thought he had his guy for the "Joker" position. But Dulcich popped the hamstring again in the Broncos' season opener, sat out the next four games, then suffered another injury to his hammy again upon his return. Built like a Greek God with long, flowing curly hair, Dulcich was instructed to change his running gait prior to this year as the thought was his toe-heel pronate running style could have put stress on his hamstring. Dulcich did seem to put the hamstring issue behind him and was the Broncos' "receiving" tight end to start the season, catching five passes for 28 yards. All that missed time, though, crimped the quick-twitch athleticism that made him such a promising prospect. He dropped two passes in game three against Tampa Bay, played one more game, then was benched and replaced by Lucas Krull. Dulcich had been inactive since after the Broncos' game four win against the New York Jets. The Broncos tried to trade Dulcich during the NFL trading deadline period last month but found no takers. That doesn't mean he won't draw interest on the waiver wire where teams can put in a claim without compensation to the Broncos. Dulcich has $390,424 remaining on his contract this year and a non-guaranteed $1.673 million next year, If he clears waivers at 2 p.m. Tuesday he will become a free agent.
