SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — De'Vondre Campbell's decision to quit on his team in the middle of a game overshadowed the bigger issues for the San Francisco 49ers. An offense that was one of the most dynamic in the NFL during a run to the Super Bowl last season has been just ordinary for most of 2024 and was downright bad in a 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night that just about ended San Francisco's playoff hopes. San Francisco (6-8) was held to its fewest yards (191) in a regular-season game in eight seasons under coach Kyle Shanahan and its fewest points since Shanahan's debut in 2017 on a rainy night that will be remembered mostly for Campbell walking off the field in the middle of the game with a towel draped over his head. The game also featured San Francisco going three-and-out on four drives as Brock Purdy struggled to connect with his receivers. Deebo Samuel dropped a potential touchdown pass after complaining earlier in the week about a lack of touches. Purdy then missed Ricky Pearsall on an underthrown deep shot in the fourth quarter before throwing an interception into the end zone that ended the Niners' comeback attempt. “I just feel like I had a lot of plays left out there that I could have made for our team,” Purdy said. “I thought the defense and special teams played so good. That’s what’s hurting me is I just feel like I failed the team. I could have been better for our offense and we could have put up more points.” Scoring has been an issue this season for the 49ers, who have been missing key playmakers like Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk for much of the season. San Francisco is scoring 8.5 fewer points per game on offense than the Niners did through 14 games last season. Red-zone defense. After allowing touchdowns on 13 consecutive red-zone drives over the previous four games, the 49ers kept the Rams out of the end zone on all three drives that went inside the 20. Receivers. The 49ers failed to get much production from their wide receivers with Purdy going 6 for 20 for 63 yards with an INT and a 19.4 rating when targeting wideouts. Samuel had 16 yards on seven targets with the key drop. Jauan Jennings had two drops and was the target on the interception. Pearsall had one catch for 16 yards on four targets. LB Dre Greenlaw returned for the first time since tearing his left Achilles tendon in last season's Super Bowl. Greenlaw had eight tackles in the first half as he brought needed intensity and physical play that had been missing for much of the season. Campbell. The 49ers are deciding whether to waive or suspend Campbell, who lost his starting job when Greenlaw returned and then refused to play when he was needed. “His actions from the game just is not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still expect to be a part of our team,” Shanahan said. “We’re working through exactly the semantics of it right now, but we’ll handle the situation appropriately.” Greenlaw came out of the game feeling OK after leaving with soreness in his knee and Achilles tendon. He is day to day. ... S Ji’Ayir Brown (groin) and LB Dee Winters (neck) are also day to day. ... LT Trent Williams (ankle) is still trying to get back to play after missing the last four games. Shanahan said Williams' recovery has been "a lot slower than anticipated.” 0 — The Niners didn't reach the red zone once all game, with their deepest penetration into Rams territory being when they reached the 27 on a third-quarter field goal drive. This marked the first time since Week 11 in 2010 that the 49ers didn't run a single play inside the opponent's 25. The 49ers visit Miami on Dec. 22. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLwww jiliko app

The Russia-Ukraine war, which has been raging since 2022, has witnessed a major escalation lately, with Russian President recently describing the Oreshnik missile as a “state-of-the-art, modern and very new weapon”. Published: December 22, 2024 10:12 PM IST By Edited by : On Sunday, December 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin was asked if recent events could lead to World War III. He urged people not to spread fear, but did acknowledge that the risks were increasing. Putin told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin that there was no need to frighten anyone, but agreed that many of the dangers were increasing. He also claimed that Russia’s rivals were making the situation more tense and said that, if that was what they wanted, so be it, according to a report by the Sputnik India media house. Russia would always react to any challenges, said Putin and said he believed that, when current opponents and potential partners recognized this, they would understand the importance of finding compromises to resolve issues. VERY NEW WEAPON: ORESHNIK On Thursday (December 19), Putin had described the Oreshnik as a “state-of-the-art, modern and very new weapon”. He made this statement in response to a Western campaign criticizing Russia’s latest intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM). Russian military experts claim the US and its European allies are spreading rumours and conducting a propaganda campaign about the Oreshnik missile’s abilities because they lack an air defence system capable of stopping it. A retired major-general of the Indian Army has gone on record saying that the West is trying to ridicule Russia by claiming its technology is old-fashioned and that their own air defence systems are much stronger. This story about Russia’s military equipment spread by the Western nations was “misleading”, the Indian Army veteran said. As a result, Putin is challenging the West to show whether or not their air defence systems can destroy the Oreshnik missile. He emphasised that the Oreshnik was actually a very powerful weapon and that Russia would soon begin mass producing it. Currently, the Oreshnik travels at a speed of Mach 10, or about 12,300 kilometres per hour, making it impossible for anyone in the world to intercept it. Additionally, the Oreshnik is an MIRV, which means it can carry multiple warheads. This makes it nearly impossible to shoot it down in its entirety. That was why Putin had challenged the West to a technical duel to prove their capabilities, he explained. A retired group captain has also supported the major-general’s statement. He said the Western nations were conducting a propaganda campaign to undermine the credibility of the Oreshnik missile. He emphasised to the media house that it could not be intercepted—let alone shot down—by such systems as the Patriot or THAAD, or any of the other air defence systems used by America and its European allies. The group captain believes that, President Putin challenging the West to use their best air defence systems against the Oreshnik signified he was confident that the missile would outperform American and European military technologies. Russia has highly effective weapons systems and, by challenging the West to deploy their advanced air defence systems, the Russian President has boldly invited the West to test Russia’s strength and capabilities, a retired lieutenant-colonel also emphasised to the media house. These experts made their comments just hours after the Russian leader challenged the West to set up all their advanced air defence systems, including the Patriot missile system, to test the effectiveness of the Oreshnik. This challenge came as Western experts expressed doubts about the missile’s ability to get past NATO’s air defence networks. Putin, at his year-end press conference in Moscow, invited the Western experts to suggest a technological experiment—a high-tech duel—for those in the West and the US who paid them for their analyses. They could choose a target in Kiev, bunch all of their air defence and missile defence resources there, and Russia would use the Oreshnik to strike that target. Putin said they were fully ready for such an experiment. Putin added with a touch of sarcasm that he was unsure if the US and its allies fully understood the changes that Russia had made to its nuclear doctrine. He suggested that this question should be addressed to them. The Russian president was thus signalling a warning to NATO and its allies, the retired major-general told Sputnik. He noted that everyone knew Ukraine was a non-nuclear state and was supported by such nuclear nations as the US, UK and France in its conflict with Russia. The expert emphasised that Putin’s recent comments was a veiled threat that such countries as the US, Britain and France could be seen as potential targets because of their support for Ukraine. President Putin had, thus, delivered a clear message to the West that Russia would not hesitate to use its nuclear weapons if it felt its security was coming under threat, retired lieutenant-colonel concluded. Vega-C Roars Back: Europe's Comeback in Space Race

Francisco Nemenzo Jr. —INQUIRER FILE PHOTO Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo Jr., renowned political scientist and one of the leading Marxist scholars in the country, died on Thursday. He was 89. Nemenzo’s daughter, Lian Nemenzo-Hernandez, announced his passing in a post on Facebook where the family recognized her father’s legacy as a radical educator and for leading modernization initiatives when he served as 18th president of the University of the Philippines (UP) from 1999 to 2005. “As the 18th President of the University of the Philippines, he left an indelible mark on the institution,” the family statement said. “He modernized the university and spearheaded initiatives that fostered critical thought and academic excellence.” Details of his memorial service will be announced soon, according to Nemenzo’s family and the UP System. Before assuming the leadership of the country’s premier state university, Nemenzo was first and foremost a political activist. “Dodong Nemenzo was a distinguished political scientist and Marxist scholar, known for his fearless views on Philippine society, politics and international affairs,” the family said. “A leading leftist intellectual, Dodong practiced his ideals—and was incarcerated for his actions during the martial law regime of Ferdinand E. Marcos. He advocated unwaveringly for social justice and reform. And played leadership roles in political organizations and social movements.” Nemenzo was married to Ana Maria “Princess” Ronquillo Nemenzo, a feminist and an antipoverty activist. Their three children—Fidel, Leonid and Lian—are all UP-educated with Fidel, a professor of mathematics, serving as the 11th chancellor of UP Diliman from 2020 to 2023. Most of Nemenzo’s career in the academe was spent in UP where he first joined as a research assistant before becoming a professor of political science in 1957. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration in the state university and obtained his doctorate degree in political science from the University of Manchester. After his incarceration during the Marcos dictatorship, Nemenzo returned to UP where he served as dean of UP Diliman’s College of Arts and Sciences from 1976 to 1981, then as faculty regent from 1988 to 1989. From 1989 until 1992, he was designated as the third chancellor of UP Visayas before serveing as university president. “Nemenzo’s presidency came at a time of national optimism as the Philippines entered the 21st century,” the UP System said in its tribute to Nemenzo. His presidency in UP, it said, coincided with the centennial celebration of the Philippine Revolution, as well as during the “period of great anticipation, as both the country and the world looked forward to a fresh start following the economic crises of the 1990s.” The university acknowledged that Nemenzo’s administration faced several challenges, including deteriorating facilities, low faculty pay and even globalization pressures affecting UP’s academic standing. Nemenzo, according to the UP System, had always believed that a UP president should be an academic leader and not a businessman. He turned this belief into reality by focusing on the university’s modernization “to make it competitive in the new millennium,” it said. Nemenzo prioritized the upgrading of the university’s infrastructures by acquiring new equipment, improving libraries and laboratories, and promoting the use of technology, including internet connectivity across all UP campuses. It was also during Nemenzo’s term when the university saw the revival of the UP Newsletter and the launch of the Forum, a broadsheet for the entire UP community. The Forum was also a platform for Nemenzo where he regularly published his ideas and take on national and local issues, the UP System said. “Through his leadership, Francisco ‘Dodong’ Nemenzo Jr. left a lasting impact on the university, guiding it through modernization while preserving its activist spirit,” the UP System said. His family said: “Dodong Nemenzo’s life was a testament to the power of ideals and conviction. His contributions to academia and society will be remembered and celebrated by many.” READ: Former UP president, political scientist Francisco Nemenzo dies Education Secretary Sonny Angara, a UP alumnus, remembered Nemenzo as a “good friend” of his late father, former Senate President Edgardo Angara, who also served as UP president.
