Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) Market Size, Latest Growth, Forecast By 2024 - 2032UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced $200 million in humanitarian aid for conflict-torn Sudan during what was likely his final trip to the United Nations while in office. With the U.N. Security Council more divided than ever, Blinken led two meetings of the U.N.’s most powerful body on Thursday, capping his engagements with the world body after a tumultuous four years that saw war return to Europe and multiple crises in the Middle East. But neither focused on Russia’s war with Ukraine or the Mideast, where the U.S. has been frequently at odds with permanent members China and Russia and almost always in the minority when it comes to Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. Instead, in an apparent bid to produce a modicum of consensus, Blinken led Security Council sessions on artificial intelligence and Sudan , where conflict has sparked a dire humanitarian crisis that aid agencies say has not received enough attention. The money announced by Blinken will go toward food, shelter and health care for the people of Sudan. He also said the State Department will work with Congress to provide an additional $30 million to elevate civilian voices to help with the transition back to democratic governance. Here’s a look at America's top diplomat at the U.N.: Blinken has been appearing in person and virtually before the Security Council since March 2021, just after assuming his position as the Biden administration’s top diplomat. In addition to several one-off council meetings, including one in February 2022 shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine, Blinken has gone to New York for a week every September for the annual General Assembly gathering of world leaders. The presidency of the Security Council rotates alphabetically every month among its 15 members. This month, it's the U.S. turn. The country holding the presidency almost always organizes several signature events on topics its government chooses. Presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers often preside at these meetings, which ministers from other council nations are invited to attend. Russia and China have blocked all council action condemning the invasion of Ukraine. This has led U.S. officials to believe that a session on the topic, especially as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office with a stated goal of ending the war immediately, would likely be a waste of time. On the Middle East, the U.S. has frequently vetoed council action condemning Israel for its tactics against Hamas in Gaza, leaving it virtually alone at the United Nations in supporting Israel. War broke out in Sudan last year between rival generals heading the military and paramilitary forces. The fighting has left tens of thousands dead, forced millions from their homes and pushed a large swath of Sudan’s population to starvation — creating an often forgotten global crisis the U.S. is seeking to spotlight. The roughly $230 million in assistance announced Thursday brings total U.S. support to over $2.3 billion since the fighting erupted. Blinken said the fighting unleashed the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, and every day “brings new atrocities, attacks on hospitals, on markets, displaced persons, camps, summary executions, women and girls subjected to unspeakable sexual violence.” “We continue to see war crimes and crimes against humanity committed across vast parts of Sudan,” he said. The U.S. leads the world in developing AI technology, according to a recently released Stanford University index, and it has been in the forefront of U.N. action on AI. In March, the first U.N. resolution on artificial intelligence was adopted by the 193-member General Assembly. Sponsored by the U.S., it gives global support to an international effort to ensure the powerful technology benefits all nations, respects human rights and is “safe, secure and trustworthy.” Blinken said AI has the potential to do “tremendous good” but can also pose “tremendous threats to the international peace and security that this council is charged with upholding.” He noted that “repressive regimes are using AI-enabled surveillance to target journalists and political dissidents" and that "if algorithms are built into weapon systems, and if they malfunction, they could spark a conflict.” “By setting rules of the road for AI we can minimize these risks, we can harness the exceptional promise of this technology,” he said. Blinken has represented the U.S. at the Security Council about half a dozen times at meetings ranging from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the war in Gaza. Russia, like the U.S. and China, is a permanent veto-holding member of the 15-nation council, and both have seats at its horseshoe-shaped table. But apart from pointed disagreements during debates, there have been no confrontations or one-on-one meetings between Blinken and Russian diplomats at previous U.N. meetings — and there was none on Thursday. Blinken thanked Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia after his remarks — as is custom — even though Nebenzia accused the U.S. of imposing rules on others but not abiding by them. But the Russian envoy agreed that “we cannot allow AI to dominate human beings and human values.” It is not unusual for Blinken or other senior U.S. officials to attend international meetings and conferences where Russian officials are present, but interactions are rare. Critics quickly noticed a Photoshop error in one of Kim Kardashian's posts . The SKIMS founder posted pictures on her Instagram Story posing while on set of her new legal drama series for Hulu , All's Fair, which is set to premiere in early 2025. In the pictures, Kim posed in front of a mirror wearing a white matching blazer and skirt set paired with satin red heels, red fishnet stockings and a purse. Kim's hair was styled short with volume. The picture got critics talking after a user of Reddit noticed that Kim forgot to edit the mirror behind her in the picture. They posted two pictures and their different angles with the caption: "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. Oops! She forgot to Photoshop the mirror. Reality photobombed her Photoshop phuckery." The conflict is “entering a decisive phase,” Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday, and “taking on very dramatic dimensions.” Ukraine’s parliament canceled a session as security was tightened following Thursday’s Russian strike on a military facility in the city of Dnipro. In a stark warning to the West, President Vladimir Putin said in a nationally televised speech the attack with the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile was in retaliation for Kyiv’s use of U.S. and British longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian territory. Putin said Western air defense systems would be powerless to stop the new missile. Ukrainian military officials said the missile that hit Dnipro reached a speed of Mach 11 and carried six nonnuclear warheads, each releasing six submunitions. Speaking Friday to military and weapons industries officials, Putin said Russia will launch production of the Oreshnik. “No one in the world has such weapons,” he said. “Sooner or later, other leading countries will also get them. We are aware that they are under development. “We have this system now,” he added. “And this is important.” Putin said that while it isn’t an intercontinental missile, it’s so powerful that the use of several of them fitted with conventional warheads in one attack could be as devastating as a strike with strategic — or nuclear — weapons. Gen. Sergei Karakayev, head of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, said the Oreshnik could reach targets across Europe and be fitted with nuclear or conventional warheads, echoing Putin’s claim that even with conventional warheads, “the massive use of the weapon would be comparable in effect to the use of nuclear weapons.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov kept up Russia's bellicose tone on Friday, blaming “the reckless decisions and actions of Western countries” in supplying weapons to Ukraine to strike Russia. "The Russian side has clearly demonstrated its capabilities, and the contours of further retaliatory actions in the event that our concerns were not taken into account have also been quite clearly outlined," he said. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, widely seen as having the warmest relations with the Kremlin in the European Union, echoed Moscow’s talking points, suggesting the use of U.S.-supplied weapons in Ukraine likely requires direct American involvement. “These are rockets that are fired and then guided to a target via an electronic system, which requires the world’s most advanced technology and satellite communications capability,” Orbán said on state radio. “There is a strong assumption ... that these missiles cannot be guided without the assistance of American personnel.” Orbán cautioned against underestimating Russia’s responses, emphasizing that the country’s recent modifications to its nuclear deployment doctrine should not be dismissed as a “bluff.” “It’s not a trick ... there will be consequences,” he said. Separately in Kyiv, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský called Thursday’s missile strike an “escalatory step and an attempt of the Russian dictator to scare the population of Ukraine and to scare the population of Europe.” At a news conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Lipavský also expressed his full support for delivering the necessary additional air defense systems to protect Ukrainian civilians from the “heinous attacks.” He said the Czech Republic will impose no limits on the use of its weapons and equipment given to Ukraine. Three lawmakers from Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, confirmed that Friday's previously scheduled session was called off due to the ongoing threat of Russian missiles targeting government buildings in central Kyiv. In addition, there also was a recommendation to limit the work of all commercial offices and nongovernmental organizations "in that perimeter, and local residents were warned of the increased threat,” said lawmaker Mykyta Poturaiev, who said it's not the first time such a threat has been received. Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate said the Oreshnik missile was fired from the Kapustin Yar 4th Missile Test Range in Russia’s Astrakhan region and flew 15 minutes before striking Dnipro. Test launches of a similar missile were conducted in October 2023 and June 2024, the directorate said. The Pentagon confirmed the missile was a new, experimental type of intermediate-range missile based on its RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile. Thursday's attack struck the Pivdenmash plant that built ICBMs when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. The military facility is located about 4 miles southwest of the center of Dnipro, a city of about 1 million that is Ukraine’s fourth-largest and a key hub for military supplies and humanitarian aid, and is home to one of the country’s largest hospitals for treating wounded soldiers from the front before their transfer to Kyiv or abroad.

In April, just 12 weeks into her pregnancy, Kathleen Clark was standing at the receptionist window of her OB-GYN’s office when she was asked to pay $960, the total the office estimated she would owe after she delivered. Clark, 39, was shocked that she was asked to pay that amount during this second prenatal visit. Normally, patients receive the bill after insurance has paid its part, and for pregnant women that’s usually only when the pregnancy ends. It would be months before the office filed the claim with her health insurer. Clark said she felt stuck. The Cleveland, Tennessee, obstetrics practice was affiliated with a birthing center where she wanted to deliver. Plus, she and her husband had been wanting to have a baby for a long time. And Clark was emotional, because just weeks earlier her mother had died. “You’re standing there at the window, and there’s people all around, and you’re trying to be really nice,” recalled Clark, through tears. “So, I paid it.” On online and other , pregnant women say they are being asked by their providers to pay out-of-pocket fees earlier than expected. The practice is legal, but patient advocacy groups call it unethical. Medical providers argue that asking for payment up front ensures they get compensated for their services. How frequently this happens is hard to track because it is considered a private transaction between the provider and the patient. Therefore, the payments are not recorded in insurance claims data and are not studied by researchers. Patients, medical billing experts, and patient advocates say the billing practice causes unexpected anxiety at a time of already heightened stress and financial pressure. Estimates can sometimes be higher than what a patient might ultimately owe and force people to fight for refunds if they miscarry or the amount paid was higher than the final bill. Up-front payments also create hurdles for women who may want to switch providers if they are unhappy with their care. In some cases, they may cause women to forgo prenatal care altogether, especially in places where few other maternity care options exist. It’s “holding their treatment hostage,” said Caitlin Donovan, a senior director at the . Medical billing and women’s health experts believe OB-GYN offices adopted the practice to manage the high cost of maternity care and the way it is billed for in the U.S. When a pregnancy ends, OB-GYNs typically file a single insurance claim for routine prenatal care, labor, delivery, and, often, postpartum care. That practice of bundling all maternity care into one billing code began three decades ago, said Lisa Satterfield, senior director of health and payment policy at the . But such bundled billing has become outdated, she said. Previously, pregnant patients had been subject to copayments for each prenatal visit, which might lead them to skip crucial appointments to save money. But the Affordable Care Act now requires all commercial insurers to fully cover certain prenatal services. Plus, it’s become more common for pregnant women to switch providers, or have different providers handle prenatal care, labor, and delivery — especially in rural areas where patient transfers are common. Some providers say prepayments allow them to over the course of the pregnancy to ensure that they are compensated for the care they do provide, even if they don’t ultimately deliver the baby. “You have people who, unfortunately, are not getting paid for the work that they do,” said Pamela Boatner, who works as a midwife in a Georgia hospital. While she believes women should receive pregnancy care regardless of their ability to pay, she also understands that some providers want to make sure their bill isn’t ignored after the baby is delivered. New parents might be overloaded with hospital bills and the costs of caring for a new child, and they may lack income if a parent isn’t working, Boatner said. In the U.S., having a baby can be expensive. People who obtain health insurance through large employers pay an average of nearly $3,000 out-of-pocket for pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, according to the . In addition, many people are opting for high-deductible health insurance plans, leaving them to shoulder a larger share of the costs. Of the with health care debt, 12% attribute at least some of it to maternity care, according to . Families need time to save money for the high costs of pregnancy, childbirth, and child care, especially if they lack paid maternity leave, said , CEO of the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, a Los Angeles-based policy think tank. Asking them to prepay “is another gut punch,” she said. “What if you don’t have the money? Do you put it on credit cards and hope your credit card goes through?” Calculating the final costs of childbirth depends on multiple factors, such as the , plan benefits, and health complications, said , a health policy researcher at the University of Southern California’s Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics. The final bill for the patient is unclear until a health plan decides how much of the claim it will cover, she said. But sometimes the option to wait for the insurer is taken away. During Jamie Daw’s first pregnancy in 2020, her OB-GYN accepted her refusal to pay in advance because Daw wanted to see the final bill. But in 2023, during her second pregnancy, a private midwifery practice in New York told her that since she had a high-deductible plan, it was mandatory to pay $2,000 spread out with monthly payments. Daw, a health policy researcher at Columbia University, delivered in September 2023 and got a refund check that November for $640 to cover the difference between the estimate and the final bill. “I study health insurance,” she said. “But, as most of us know, it’s so complicated when you’re really living it.” While the Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover some prenatal services, it doesn’t prohibit providers from sending their final bill to patients early. It would be a challenge politically and practically for state and federal governments to attempt to regulate the timing of the payment request, said , a co-director of the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at Georgetown University. Medical lobbying groups are powerful and contracts between insurers and medical providers are proprietary. Because of the legal gray area, , an insurance broker at Rapha Health and Life in Texas, advises clients to ask their insurer if they can refuse to prepay their deductible. Some insurance plans prohibit providers in their network from requiring payment up front. If the insurer says they can refuse to pay up front, Marshall said, she tells clients to get established with a practice before declining to pay, so that the provider can’t refuse treatment. Related Articles Clark said she met her insurance deductible after paying for genetic testing, extra ultrasounds, and other services out of her health care flexible spending account. Then she called her OB-GYN’s office and asked for a refund. “I got my spine back,” said Clark, who had previously worked at a health insurer and a medical office. She got an initial check for about half the $960 she originally paid. In August, Clark was sent to the hospital after her blood pressure spiked. A high-risk pregnancy specialist — not her original OB-GYN practice — delivered her son, Peter, prematurely via emergency cesarean section at 30 weeks. It was only after she resolved most of the bills from the delivery that she received the rest of her refund from the other OB-GYN practice. This final check came in October, just days after Clark brought Peter home from the hospital, and after multiple calls to the office. She said it all added stress to an already stressful period. “Why am I having to pay the price as a patient?” she said. “I’m just trying to have a baby.” ©2024 KFF Health News. No. 2 Georgia is resting its national championship hopes on backup quarterback Gunner Stockton. Coach Kirby Smart said Monday that Georgia is preparing Stockton to start in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against No. 3 Notre Dame. Stockton took over when starter Carson Beck suffered a right elbow injury in the the first half in the Bulldogs’ 22-19 overtime win over Texas in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Dec. 7 in Atlanta. Georgia's first-round bye in the playoffs has given Stockton, a sophomore, more time to prepare for his new starting role. Smart said the experience with the first-team is the primary benefit in “several practices” since the SEC championship game. “He got lots of reps prior to these practices, but he’s getting much more now,” Smart said. “I do think ... when you get ready for an opponent like Notre Dame, you need time and we have time.” The Fighting Irish advanced by beating Indiana 27-17 in the first round on Friday night. Smart said Stockton and Georgia can focus on Notre Dame. “But I think the biggest thing is just competition at practice,” Smart said. “You know, the situations we put him in. All those things allow him to get better as a quarterback.” Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Stockton will require adjustments by his defense. “You evaluate, obviously, what they’ve done all season and you have a separate tape of what Stockton has done,” Freeman said Monday. “I think we have 80-something plays of him. He can run their offense. He does things a little bit differently. He can extend plays with his legs, he’s a good athlete. The thing I probably noticed most about him, he’s an ultra-competitive individual.” Georgia announced on Dec. 9 that Beck and his family were considering treatment options for his elbow. Those options could include surgery, though Georgia has not released details about the injury. Two weeks later, no decision has been released by Beck or Georgia. “The only thing I can update is that they’re still going through those deliberations in terms of the decision-making process time, all the kind of decisions they have to make as a family,” Smart said. Beck suffered the injury to his throwing arm in the first half of the SEC championship game and made a dramatic return to the field for the handoff on the game-winning play in overtime. Stockton had to leave the field for one play after having his helmet knocked off. Even though he was able to take the snap and hand off to Trevor Etienne for the running back’s decisive 4-yard touchdown run, Beck was unable to raise his right arm. Stockton’s job may get a little easier with Notre Dame defensive tackle Rylie Mills out. Freeman announced Monday that Mills will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury he suffered against Indiana. Mills had 37 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks this season and anchored the interior line while All-American Howard Cross II missed the final three regular season games with a high ankle sprain. Cross returned against Indiana. It’s yet another blow to a defense that had already lost preseason All-America cornerback Benjamin Morrison and its top two rush ends with season-ending injuries. “You can’t replace Rylie Mills,” Freeman said. “Yes, the production, but the leadership, a captain, very similar to the things I said about Benjamin when he was out. You feel awful for him as a person, a guy that came back to improve his draft stock. You’ve got to replace what he did for our defense in different ways.” Stockton completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards with one interception against Texas. Smart downplayed the suggestion Stockton could give the Bulldogs more options as a running quarterback. “I think we are who we are in regards to that,” Smart said. “I mean, we played an entire season, offensively. You know, Gunner’s a good athlete. I think Carson is a good athlete. So it’s one of those deals that I don’t know how much that changes things.” Beck, a fifth-year senior, is 24-3 as a starter. He started all 26 games for the Bulldogs in 2023 and 2024. He passed for 3,941 yards with 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions in 2023 but had more difficulties with turnovers this season. Beck passed for 28 touchdowns with 12 interceptions this season and completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards before his injury in the SEC championship game. Mumbai : Bigg Boss 18 has been making headlines for its high voltage drama inside the house. The show, known for some intense confrontations, has often seen contestants clashing with the show’s iconic host, Salman Khan. Over the years, several contestants have crossed lines, leading to heated exchanges with Salman, whose no-nonsense approach has left a lasting impact on both the contestants and the audience. In the latest season, Bigg Boss 18, Kashish Kapoor joined the list of contestants who dared to argue with Salman. During the recent episode, Kashish had a heated exchange with the host after he confronted her for allegedly framing fellow contestant Avinash Mishra. The promo of the confrontation has taken the internet by storm. This isn’t the first time a contestant has locked horns with Salman. Let’s take a look at some of the most controversial moments when contestants crossed the line. Priyanka’s behavior during Bigg Boss 10 remains one of the most talked-about controversies. Her disrespectful attitude led Salman to demand her immediate eviction. He even warned the channel against inviting her back, threatening to quit if they did. Another Bigg Boss 10 contestant, Swami Om, was expelled after throwing urine on fellow housemates. Salman lashed out at him before his eviction, making it clear that such behavior would not be tolerated. Despite being one of the highest-paid contestants of the season, Rimi’s lack of participation and excuses irritated Salman. Frustrated by her attitude, he requested Bigg Boss to evict her, citing her disinterest in the show. Kushal’s altercation with Salman during Bigg Boss 7 remains infamous. The actor’s aggressive behavior towards fellow contestant Tanisha Mukerji led to Salman confronting him. Kushal later claimed that Salman apologized to him. Celebrity stylist Sapna Bhavnani was one of the fiercest contestants in Bigg Boss 6. She openly challenged Salman, stating she wasn’t afraid of him and would play the game on her terms. Her confrontational attitude led to several heated moments with the host. Shakti Kapoor’s fallout with Salman during Bigg Boss 5 was a significant controversy. Although much of the spat was edited out, Shakti later demanded an apology from Salman for his remarks, which he claimed were unwarranted and disrespectful. During the fifth season, Akashdeep Saigal, known for his role in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, left Salman Khan visibly upset when he walked away while the host was addressing him. The move was seen as disrespectful and sparked widespread criticism. After his eviction, Akashdeep accused Salman of sabotaging his career as revenge for their on-show altercation, a claim that stirred controversy in the entertainment world. The sixth season saw fashion consultant Imam Siddique clashing with Salman in a memorable showdown. In a bold move, Imam interrupted Salman by saying, “Time-out,” while the host was scolding him. Salman, known for his no-nonsense approach, immediately rebuked Imam, warning him to stay within his limits. Imam’s eccentric antics not only rattled the housemates but also led to one of the most talked-about moments in Bigg Boss history. Bigg Boss 18 continues to entertain audiences with its unpredictable drama. The grand finale is set to take place on January 19.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola denied he has a “personal problem” with Kevin De Bruyne and insisted Tuesday the playmaker's absence from the team in recent weeks was down to his fitness issues. City has not won in seven games in all competitions — its worst run under Guardiola — and De Bruyne has featured only as a substitute in the last five of those matches after recovering from a pelvic injury. The Belgium midfielder was injured during City’s Champions League match with Inter Milan on Sept. 18 and hasn't started since. A number of prominent pundits, including former City defender and club ambassador Micah Richards, have questioned why De Bruyne has not been starting games amid the champions’ dramatic slump. Richards said on “The Rest is Football” podcast that it appeared “there’s some sort of rift going on” between De Bruyne and Guardiola. Guardiola responded in his news conference ahead of Wednesday's Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, saying: “People say I’ve got a problem with Kevin. Do you think I like to not play with Kevin? No, I don’t want Kevin to play? “The guy who has the most talent in the final third — I don’t want it? I have a personal problem with him after nine years together? He’s delivered to me the biggest success to this club, but he’s been five months injured (last season) and two months injured (this year). He’s 33 years old. He needs time to find his best, like last season, step by step. He’ll try to do it and feel better. I’m desperate to have his best.” Both De Bruyne and Guardiola have spoken since of the pain De Bruyne was in after his injury against Inter and the need to ease him back into action. De Bruyne is in the final year of his contract. “I’d love to have the Kevin in his prime, 26 or 27. He would love it too — but he is not 26 or 27 anymore," Guardiola said. “He had injuries in the past, important and long ones. He is a guy who needs to be physically fit for his space and energy. You think I’m complaining? It’s normal, it’s nature. He’s played in 10 or 11 seasons a lot of games and I know he is desperate to help us. He gives glimpses of brilliance that only he can have." Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after he takes officeNobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman has published a new essay arguing that Americans' love of mobile gambling apps is doing serious societal harm. Writing on his Substack page, Krugman outlines how the mobile web has erased any friction points that used to exist for legalized betting and have made it into a full-blown addiction that he believes is on par with the opioid epidemic. "As technology made gambling and speculation essentially frictionless, fueling the rise of predatory ' limbic capitalism ,' policy did nothing to protect Americans from their self-destructive instincts," he argued. "And while ordinary gambling can and does ruin people’s lives, gambling that takes the form of asset speculation can suck in far more people, because, as Robert Shiller pointed out long ago, widespread optimism about an asset’s price can for a while be self-fulfilling, because it initiates a 'natural Ponzi scheme.'" ALSO READ: Trump adviser on plot to take Greenland: 'We have not expanded our country in 70 years' Krugman believes that this is exactly what has been happening in the world of cryptocurrency , where prices of assorted digital coins have been soaring even though, he argued, there has been little proven use for them outside of conducting illicit activities . That said, Krugman made no predictions on when the cryptocurrency bubble is going to burst because "with gambling on asset prices easier than ever, natural Ponzi schemes can run even longer and higher than in the past," while then adding that "crypto, built on a foundation of technobabble and libertarian derp, is both a Ponzi scheme and a cult." As if this weren't troubling enough, Krugman noted the outsize role that the crypto industry played in political donations in the 2024 presidential election, pointing to a report that just three pro-cryptocurrency super PACs spent a whopping $133 million to influence the outcome. This led Krugman to conclude that "the crypto piece of the gambling epidemic gets so big that it’s seriously warping our politics ." Read the whole essay here .

Newton's Third Law of Politics | @amacforamerica1. A set of new standard bed pillows to replace the ones you've been sleeping on for so long that they resemble thin sheets of paper rather than something you should rest your head on. Promising review: "I’ve become pretty committed to these pillows. I recently revamped my guest rooms and had some ancient pillows that I decided to upgrade with these bad boys since we have used them in other places for years now! Love them. Super soft, clean up nice, and stay cool. Highly recommend in both queen and king sizes! And yes, the queen size fits into a regular sham if you need to know!" — Ali Lytle Get a set of two from Amazon for $59 (available in sizes Queen/Standard and King). 2. A boho duvet set , so gorgeous you'll think you dreamt about it and then be delightfully surprised by it all over again once you wake up to its stunning embroidered tufts. It'll be *just* the thing you need to refresh your room. Promising review : "OMG I love this duvet! It’s so freaking pretty! It’s a little bit larger than the comforters I use but that’s fine. Buy one. You will not be disappointed." — lupe Get the queen set from Amazon for $35.99 + (available in sizes twin–king and 11 colors). 3. Or a splurge-worthy duvet set complete with a buttery soft cover and two shams that'll make you want to lounge in bed for days (if only). The juniper color is also divine and will help transform your room into the forest-y escape you always hoped it could be. I have this exact set (as well as a medium weight down insert ) and, OMG, it is life-changing. I don't get to sleep nearly as much as I'd like, thanks to my 2-year-old, but DAMN, if I had the chance, I would quite literally stay bundled under this duvet all day. The first night my husband climbed under it, he said, "Wow, I feel like I'm in a hotel." And he's right — it really does feel like a luxury to sleep with this set every night. I'm a hot sleeper and have been perfectly fine throughout the night! It's made out of organic cotton that is just so unbelievably soft I can't get over it. Absolutely worth the money. Promising review: "The duvet cover is the absolute best! My duvet stays in place. The zip closure is my favorite (I will never go back to button closure). It's weighty and looks of good quality and workmanship, but it's not so heavy that it’s hard to work with if you want to lean it or hang it . This Christmas, I’ll keep it simple for Santa. As much as I’d like a new iPhone or a warm island getaway far from Michigan, I’ll settle for one thing. Wouldn't it be great if Americans could be proud of their elected leaders? (OK, maybe that isn’t such a simple request.) In the past week alone, we’ve heard reports of “missing” Texas Congresswoman Kay Granger, 81, a Republican, found dealing with “dementia issues.” And on Monday, a about former Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, 42, which confirmed he’s as off-putting as we all already knew. Congress shouldn’t give us the heebie-jeebies, nor should it resemble a nursing home. We’re a country more than 340 million strong. You’d think it wouldn’t be so hard to find 535 qualified, fully functioning individuals to represent us. This month, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 82, , sustaining injuries. And former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, after a fall on a work trip abroad. (Despite giving up her leadership post, Pelosi was just – her 20th – last month.) Perhaps as citizens of this country, we should more closely consider whom we choose to represent us. I respect my elders and certainly don’t hold their age against them. Yet, age affects all of us differently. Just look at President-elect Donald Trump, who at never seems to run out of energy. That’s not the case for everyone that age. At 82, President Joe Biden’s (which he and his administration tried to hide) prevented him from fully serving the American people, and . The problem seems to be that once elected, our politicians have an extremely difficult time knowing it’s time to call it quits. For instance, Granger, who has , announced last year she wouldn’t seek reelection in 2024. She served as chair of the House Appropriations Committee, a coveted post, . The rationale for that decision seems clear now. Granger cast her last House vote in July, and her unexplained absence from Washington essentially means her constituents have been left without representation for months. New reporting from a Dallas outlet . She’s been dealing with dementia, according to her son, and living at a senior facility. I feel for her and her family. But she should have been forthcoming about what she was dealing with – and she should have stepped down from Congress earlier this year to allow for someone else to step in and represent the district. Now, will be marred by a disgraceful exit. Gaetz, the former congressman, may have relative youth on his side, but not much else. After Trump that Gaetz would be his nominee for attorney general, Gaetz immediately resigned from Congress, much to the delight of pretty much everyone in that chamber. Gaetz later withdrew his name from the Cabinet position, after it became clear he couldn’t get the support necessary from fellow Republicans in the Senate. The impending release of a House ethics report always seemed at the heart of Gaetz’s decision to step down so suddenly. After he resigned, the idea was the House Ethics Committee would refrain from releasing the report – at least, that’s what Gaetz had hoped. Yet, the bipartisan committee changed its mind and decided to release the findings now. The committee , including “prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use.” Get columns from your favorite columnists + expert analysis on top issues, delivered straight to your device through the USA TODAY app. Don't have the app? . Gaetz had asked a judge to block the report's release, claiming it was an “unprecedented overreach.” A previous Justice Department investigation did not lead to any charges. The report only confirms what’s been obvious to anyone following Gaetz’s political career – he’s untrustworthy and obnoxious. And his pompous behavior made him no friends, even among Republicans. Between Granger’s disappearing act and Gaetz’s cringeworthy behavior, surely our country deserves better. Let’s give ourselves a collective Christmas present this year by choosing our elected officials with more care. .

Wally Brewster refutes Albania visit rumors, denies Dominican negotiationsGrowing up, Pete Bissonette always wanted to live in a bus or a cave. The latter dream came true, at least in a sense. Bissonette has one of the about 650 homes Mankato, Minnesota-based Earth Sheltered Technology has built since it began in 1981. The company, which has houses in the Twin Cities and Wisconsin as well as in California and Alaska, specializes in partly underground structures, basically man-made caves. Underground homes, also known as earth-sheltered homes, have been around for nearly as long as humans have, though the modern incarnation seemed to gain traction in the 1970s after the 1973 oil embargo and ensuing energy crisis, according to an article in magazine Mother Earth News. At the time, people were looking to reduce energy usage, especially when it came to heating and cooling their homes. Underground homes have other benefits, too, including durability — particularly in the face of natural disasters like tornadoes — and low-maintenance needs (no need to paint when dirt and grass cover the whole house). Perhaps that’s why Earth Sheltered Technology has produced the bulk of its homes, about 450, in the past 17 years, said owner Jeff Hickok. Besides achieving his childhood dream, Bissonette’s other inspiration for building his underground home was the book “Earth Sheltered Housing Design,” published in the late 1970s by the University of Minnesota’s Underground Space Center. John Carmody, one of the leaders of the underground-home movement at the time as a systems designer and environmentalist, oversaw the center and the book, which sold 250,000 copies, according the to university’s website. “I loved every bit of building it,” Bissonette said of his house. “I’m glad I made the decision to build it. I have no intention of ever selling it and made it wheelchair accessible so I can get around in case I need one.” Bissonette said he has long worried about tornadoes. An underground home, he thought, would protect against that. Underground homes are known for their durability, Hickok said. He said at least two tornadoes have gone over his Mankato underground home. It’s a reason his company has been building so many underground houses in Oklahoma and Texas. Texas averages about 140 tornadoes each year, the most of any state, while Oklahoma ranks in the top five, per CNN. Other clients have reported the structures being able to withstand earthquakes, Hickok said. The U.S. Department of Energy’s website said earth-sheltered homes can cost less to insure, as they naturally can withstand high winds, hailstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes. The Australian Broadcasting Co. even published a story last year about such homes gaining popularity because of their ability to withstand high temperatures and bush fires. “The earth is a very good protector for tornadoes,” Hickok said. “A tornado can’t damage a home unless it can completely surround it, and with most underground homes, they only have south-facing windows.” In addition to saving money on a homeowner’s insurance policy, an underground home could also save on claims. Hail, for example, does minimal damage to the roof, with only some of the piping up top suffering damage. Earth Sheltered Technology was a retirement job for Jeff Hickok’s father, Jerry Hickok. Jeff Hickok said his dad had a fascination with living in a cellar as a child and created the company after finishing at his corporate job. As a kid, Hickok dreaded going to home shows with his father and didn’t pursue the business until later in his life, taking it on around 2007. “I didn’t realize how forward-thinking dad really was with energy-saving and safety of these things,” he said. “I’m so proud to be running the company that my father pioneered.” Another big selling point: An underground home uses about 80% less energy than a traditional home of its size. That’s because the ground insulates it to keep it at a stable 50- to 60-degree internal temperature. South-facing windows warm it during the day, Hickok said. Dick and Jeanne Newport of Berlin, Wisconsin, remember the ’70s energy crisis and how people wanted to be energy independent. They visited a friend’s underground home back then and left inspired to have their own one day, which eventually happened in 2016. About 980,000 pounds of solid concrete surrounds their two-bedroom, two-bathroom underground home, and most winters, only a single wood-burning stove heats the 2,000-square-foot property, Dick Newport said. On the roof, the two have planted native grasses. “People thought our house was a septic mound because they didn’t know what it was,” Jeanne Newport said. “Until you get to the front, you can’t tell it’s a house. There’s tall prairie grass all around it, and it’s really hard to see the whole rounded shape.” They estimate they pay about $115 in utilities for their highest-usage month. The average Minnesotan pays more than $151 a month for electric and gas utilities, according to Kris Lindahl Real Estate. The Newports estimated it cost about $350,000 to build their house including all the interior design, electrical and plumbing. When adjusting for inflation, that comes out to $465,799 in 2024. Earth Sheltered Technology builds several concrete dome structures with steel beams as support, insulating and waterproofing them for the price of about $150 per square foot, according to Hickok. But the rest is up to the homeowners to DIY or hire contractors. Having to do extra work didn’t bug the Newports, and the lower energy bills every month make up for the cost of building the home. “There’s not a lot of maintenance because most of the house is covered in dirt, and it’s quiet if the windows are closed,” Dick Newport said. “We have peace of mind living here.” This past summer, a “hobbit house” in Pine Lake Township, Minnesota, listed for about $180,000, drawing attention for its unique underground design. Being different is yet another perk of having an earth-sheltered home for Bissonette, who is working on an art piece made of 5,000 empty wine bottles. Outside of his two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 4,000-square-foot home, there’s a large labyrinth in his yard filled with statues from Bali, including one that can identify evil, Bissonette said. There are also tall native grasses growing on the roof among a smattering of solar tubes and ventilation pipes. His home blends into the surrounding vegetation and looks like several hills with trees and shrubs growing on them. It’s not until visitors turn a corner that they’re able to see two garage doors poking out, alongside a front door, wide driveway and windows. When he built his house in 2001, many of his neighbors thought it looked like a military base because of how hidden it was from the main road. But the rooftop patio makes it perfect for hosting, Bissonette said of the views of rolling farmland and acres of wildlife. Bissonette taught himself and installed much of the electrical work, also repurposing salvaged wood for the interior walls, making it uniquely his own. “What surprises people the most is how light it is in the house,” he said. “They expect it to be dark because it is underground, but the curved interior surface of the domes reflect light throughout the space, bouncing it across the inner surfaces, making it bright and light-filled.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!None

The store owner, in an attempt to defend their actions, claimed that they were unaware of the harmful effects of using such pesticides and that they were only trying to save costs by using cheaper alternatives. However, such excuses fell on deaf ears as the authorities were quick to impose a hefty fine of 100,000 yuan on the store for endangering public health and violating food safety regulations.

With the holiday season now underway, Visa, the global leader in digital payments, reminds shoppers to stay vigilant amidst a rise in fraud schemes. Visa’s Payment Ecosystem Risk and Control (PERC) team released the 2024 Holiday Threats Report, outlining common methods fraudsters use to steal money, data, and account details while people plan their festivities. Top holiday shopping scams one should be aware of are: Phishing and social engineering: Scammers impersonate trusted sources to steal personal information through emails, texts, and calls. Consumers should be wary of common scams to obtain financial details, like emails/texts about fraudulent Black Friday deals, travel discounts, and package delivery updates. They also orchestrate more sophisticated frauds like digital arrests where one is held ransom through their phone on false pretexts that can be very harrowing for the lay consumer. Fraudsters also use real platforms to post fake job ads and demand payments for false expenses like background checks. Consumers should also be careful before donating to charities they don’t know. Scam websites: Fake online stores and imitations of real brands are a growing threat in e-commerce. Such sites have increased with scammers building almost legitimate looking websites, and using search engines and social media ads to attract buyers with unrealistic deals on luxury or popular items, with no delivery of goods. Consequently, victims could either lose money or share sensitive information that fraudsters use for other nefarious activities. Travel scams: The holiday season sees many fraudulent travel websites positioned as authentic and appealing, with deals like “last minute price drop”. Scammers make these websites as close to real as possible and offer discounts on travel-related expenses like flights, taxis and hotels. Consumers may also receive phishing emails with fake flight cancellation notices and be asked to pay for re-booking, or see advertisements with fake vacation rentals at low prices, that collect deposits for non-existent properties. Consumers should steer clear of malicious festival-based apps like Santa Trackers or holiday planners that are loaded with malware. These apps can steal login and payment details once downloaded. Theft and skimming: Always be vigilant in busy malls and public spaces that are hotspots for thieves. Common risks include physical theft or pickpocketing of cards and wallets. Beware of skimming devices fitted on legitimate ATMs or payment terminals to collect card information; always choose to tap and pay where possible. How you can stay safe: Visa offers these tips to protect yourself during the holiday season. • Don’t click on links in unsolicited/unknown emails or texts • Check websites for legitimacy before making purchases. Genuine URLs will ideally start with “https://” • Use only trusted platforms or agents for travel bookings • Keep wallets and devices secure in crowded places • Report suspicious activity at ATMs or payment terminals immediately to the nearest authority As a shopper, stay alert and informed to shop and spend safely and enjoy a worry-free holiday season. During the cold Nebraska winters, many Columbus residents would probably claim that their driveway is the coldest place in town, but in reality, it's not even close. That honor goes to a new therapeutic device located within Linn Family Chiropractic. The building at 4307 23rd St. looks like one would expect a chiropractic office to look, with a waiting area, several adjustment devices, a desk ... and a glass door framed by LED lights, holding back fog. According to Doctor of Chiropractic Justin Linn, that's where the cold magic happens, as patients step into a room that is 166 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. "By putting the body into the coldest place on planet Earth, you can get some positive healing effects from it," Linn said. "There's a biphasic dose response of extreme environments. You can get a positive effect. Cold temperature in small doses causes the body to heal itself." This is Linn's newest addition to his practice, something he experienced on a trip to Salt Lake City six or seven years ago. Being frozen in the desert wasn't on his itinerary at the time, he said, but the spontaneous experience had a lasting impact. "I was feeling like garbage and I was telling my brother, who's a chiropractor, 'hey, man, can you fix me up?' He's like, 'we'll find a table or something in the house that we can work on.' Then he's like, 'you know what we should do? We should go into town and go to cryotherapy,'" Linn said. At first, the novelty aspect of stepping into the coldest spot on Earth in one's underwear is sort of entertaining, Linn said, but when the cold actually hits, it sets in that this isn't just hanging out in a walk-in cooler. "For the first 10, 15 seconds, there's kind of a gimmicky effect to it where you say, 'yeah, this is cold," like opening a freezer door in the summer and you stick your head in it," Linn said. "Then it just kept getting worse and worse and worse and worse like an airplane gaining altitude." After three minutes in the box the ambient air felt like a boxing glove hitting him in the face, Linn said. A 200-some degree shift in relative temperature hits hard, but that's part of why people like it. "The air hit me, and instant adrenaline, instant endorphins, and I felt like I could run through a brick wall. That feeling was amazing," Linn said. "I came out of that thing and instantly I felt good and I was like, 'whatever this drug is, I want it.' I've been chasing that for years." Linn originally wanted to debut this chill technology some time ago, but a cryotherapy chamber costs upwards multiple tens of thousands of dollars. COVID-19 also threw its wrench in the works, so he decided to wait. Now that Linn does have the chamber, he sees the effects daily on his patients, he said. According to Linn, cryotherapy works by triggering the body's self-preservation instincts, which is the opposite of how ice baths work, because the body is reacting to a very sudden level of cold that it knows it should protect itself from. "That creates a systemic autonomic response, basically a fight or flight reaction, that causes vasoconstriction of the peripheral (blood vessels)," Linn said. "It squeezes your blood vessels down and pushes that blood flow to the core to protect the core organ systems." Linn said that despite the use of the body's self-preservation systems, the machine is safe and patients don't run a risk of frostbite or anything like that, though users wear protective gloves, masks and socks just to be safe. There has only been one death associated with cryotherapy machines and it was an operator error when using the machine alone, Linn said. Linn's machine is always supervised and there's a timed light in the door frame so those inside can see how long they've been in there. The longest people stay inside is around five minutes and that's experienced users with excellent temperature regulation. "I would like to see a 35 to 40 degree surface skin temperature drop," Linn said. "So we take a laser thermometer, check people on their way in and out. So I'm 95.5 coming in ... to perfection, that would be a 40 degree drop. I would come out at 55," Linn said. "That's where the medical literature says the sweet spot happens when you get the fight or flight reaction." Linn said that cryotherapy as a practice has been used for years with helpful effects on multiple fronts. He also uses a targeted cryotherapy device that looks sort of like a vacuum hose, for injuries. A lot of athletes use that machine. "Cryotherapy in general was developed by a Japanese physician in 1979 and he experimented and treated patients with inflammatory issues like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus and things like that," Linn said. "They expanded into treating psoriasis, eczema, inflammatory skin conditions which it works really well for. It was only recently that kind of got co-opted into athletic rehab." The Minnesota Vikings use a cryotherapy chamber for rehabilitation, Linn said. Angel Rodriguez, a local soccer player, has used it for three weeks now and has even gotten his mother to use it for her own purposes. "It helps with muscle recovery," Rodriguez said. "I like to work out every day. I play soccer too and I'm not as sore. It helps with sleeping at night, I sleep way better and it helps with your immune system. My mom was sick recently and I never got sick, that's the things I've noticed." Linn also added a hyperbaric chamber, an inflatable pill-shaped tent that allows users to take more oxygen into their bloodstream more directly than just by regular breathing. "We can put oxygen in and it's like, take a jar full of marbles, we can't get any more marbles in the jar, but if we dump sand in there, we can fill the space between the marbles," Linn said. "That's how we can increase oxygen saturation to tissues, by putting it under pressure. Then you come out of pressure, all that oxygen dissolves out of the solution and boom, it goes to the body and can increase healing." Cryotherapy and oxygen therapy work by the same merit as exercise or dieting, Linn said, as continual conditioning in unusual conditions strengthen the normal conditions, just like a caloric deficit can help the body burn fat or "torturing" muscles by testing their limits strengthen them. The hyperbaric chamber requires an appointment since it takes just shy of an hour to get the full effect, but the cryotherapy machine can get someone in and out in the span of five minutes, Linn said, so there's no appointment there. While there is an option for one-time use, where someone can just come in and pay $30 for one session, Linn has membership levels for repeated use up to a month, which almost all of its use comes from. Limited time offer. Hayball, who won a pre-season punting battle over fellow Australian Lou Hedley, was yelled at by his coach after having one of his punts returned for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. The play was called back on a holding call but that didn’t stop a visibly upset Rizzi from confronting Hayball on the sidelines, throwing his hat to the ground and pointing at a spot on the field as Saints running back Alvin Kamara stepped in to de-escalate the situation. Hayball handled the situation well, nodding along and not once retaliating to the verbal barrage coming in his direction. While it was not initially clear why Rizzi went after Hayball, the New Orleans coach later explained that the exchange was in response to Hayball “not executing the gameplan”. “I'm a big accountability guy and that was a big part of our gameplan today and he wasn’t executing the gameplan,” Rizzi said. “His last punt was outstanding and it really helped us — actually his last two punts. His second-to-last punt in particular was really good, it pinned them back and they didn’t get any return yards. That was what we were trying to do all day. “Our first three punts weren’t good enough so I let him know that’s exactly how I felt. It probably came across a little bit more than that but me and Matt are fine.” Fortunately for Rizzi the Saints ended up escaping with the win against a lowly Giants team that struggled to get anything going on offence early, with quarterback Drew Lock failing to complete his first eight passes of the game. New Orleans had already jumped ahead 7-0 at that point after second-year running back Kendre Miller punched it in following chunk gains for Juwan Johnson and Marquez Valdes-Scantling earlier in the drive. In what was an otherwise relatively dour affair, the Giants had a chance to send the game to overtime but Graham Gano’s 35-yard field goal attempt was tipped and missed. The Saints lost quarterback Derek Carr late in the game for a hand injury and Rizzi did not have an update on his condition. RESULTS SHAKE UP TOP OF THE DRAFT ORDER Speaking of the Giants, they are one of two teams along with the Las Vegas Raiders who are expected to be picking a potential future franchise quarterback in next year’s draft. And while they were already well positioned to do just that, Jacksonville’s 10-6 win over the Tennessee Titans has re-set the top of the draft order. Both the Raiders and Giants are now 2-11, with Las Vegas going down 28-13 to Tampa Bay on Monday. The Raiders, who now have the first overall pick, also are now without their top two quarterbacks after Aidan O’Connell (knee) was carted off. He will seemingly join Gardner Minshew (collarbone) on the sidelines, while the Giants are also expected to take a quarterback high in the draft after parting ways with Daniel Jones. Shadeur Sanders and Cam Ward are the two top quarterback prospects in next year’s class, although there are big questions over both. And the Giants in particular need to make sure they pick the right guy, because frustration is clearly building. ‘FIX THIS DUMPSTER FIRE’: SAD SIGHT FOR GIANTS The Giants fell to 2-11 with a loss to the Saints and are on pace for one of the worst seasons in the history of a franchise that is “celebrating’’ its 100th season. The last time a banner flew overhead with such negative feedback from disgruntled fans was back in 1978 when in the third quarter of a game against the Cardinals at Giants Stadium, a plane flew a banner that read, “15 YEARS OF LOUSY FOOTBALL ... WE’VE HAD ENOUGH.’’ Giants ownership took that message to heart, wholesale changes were enacted, with George Young’s hiring as the general manager the main impetus for the turnaround of the franchise. It remains to be seen what happens with this year’s team. Giants co-owner John Mara insisted back when his team was 2-5 that there would be no changes in-season with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll and that he did not anticipate making changes with them for 2025. The Giants are currently on an eight-game losing streak and if they lose out the rest of the way and finish 2-15, it will be difficult for Mara to keep his word. — New York Post NEW YORK NIGHTMARE OFFICIAL AS JETS OFFICIALLY OUT OF PLAYOFFS Another miserable loss in another miserable Jets season. This week, the Jets blew an eight-point, fourth-quarter lead and lost 32-26 in overtime to the Dolphins. There was not much suspense left but this loss officially eliminates the Jets from playoff contention and drops them to 3-10 this year. While fans may rejoice about draft pick positioning, this one will sting the Jets players and coaches. They played their best game of the year for three quarters and then saw the game slip away in the fourth quarter, only to regain the lead, only to see the Dolphins tie the game in the final minute and win it in overtime. The Jets took a 26-23 lead with 52 seconds left in the game on a 42-yard field goal from Anders Carlson. But Malik Washington then returned Carlson’s kickoff 45 yards to the Miami 46-yard line. The Dolphins gained 20 yards on six plays and Jason Sanders kicked a 52-yard field goal to tie the game at 26-26 with seven seconds left in regulation. The Dolphins won the coin toss to start overtime and went 70 yards on eight plays. Tua Tagovailoa hit tight end Jonnu Smith for a 10-yard touchdown to end the game. This was the Jets’ fourth loss in a row and ninth in 10 games. This is their ninth straight loss in Miami. — New York Post AUSSIE MAILATA SAYS EAGLES WERE ‘S***TY’ WITH NERVY WIN Elsewhere, star Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith said Philadelphia’s offence is “not on the same page” after the Super Bowl contenders escaped with a 22-16 win over the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have been much-improved since second-year quarterback Bryce Young’s return after being benched earlier in the year following a few rough weeks to start the season. That continued on Monday and in fact a few key drops from rookie receiver Xavier Legette, including a particularly costly one on Carolina’s final drive of the game, meant Young played even better than his final stat line of 19/34 for 191 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Young did particularly well navigating pressure, often connecting with reliable veteran receiver Adam Thielen, who had nine receptions for 102 yards. Running back Chuba Hubbard, meanwhile, had a big day on the ground with 26 carries for 92 yards and a score while rookie Jonathon Brooks, who had only recently returned from a torn ACL, went down again with a non-contact injury in worrying signs. Elsewhere, Smith and A.J. Brown only combined for 80 receiving yards as Philadelphia did what it needed to do, riding Saquon Barkley and the rushing game instead as the superstar running back picked up 124 yards on 20 carries. With it, Barkley passed LeSean McCoy’s single-season rushing mark of 1607 yards set in 2013. Australian left tackle Jordan Mailata said Barkley’s record-setting game was the bright spot in what was otherwise a disappointing game that left the team feeling “s***ty”. “It was good. It wasn’t like someone died. I’m just critical,” Mailata later said of the mood in the locker room. “The mood was good. You’ve just got to remember this is the NFL, they compete too. They’ve been on a tear the last four weeks this team. We did not take them for granted.” FINAL SCORES — WEEK 14 Lions 34 Packers 31 Steelers 27 Browns 14 Giants 11 Saints 14 Dolphins 32 Jets 26 (OT) Titans 6 Jaguars 10 Vikings 42 Falcons 21 Eagles 22 Panthers 16 Buccaneers 28 Raiders 13THESE Are The Perks Of Holding A10-Year US Visa, Indian Travel Vlogger Explains

FC Barcelona is set to engage in crucial discussions with Ansu Fati's representatives in January in order to map out the future trajectory of the talented young player. With uncertainties surrounding Fati's current contract situation and amid heightened interest from various clubs across Europe, the Catalan giants are eager to secure a resolution that aligns with both the player's ambitions and the club's long-term objectives.LAS VEGAS — Players Era Festival organizers have done what so many other have tried — bet their fortunes in this city that a big payoff is coming. Such bet are usually bad ones, which is why so many massive casino-resorts have been built on Las Vegas Boulevard. But it doesn't mean the organizers are wrong. They're counting on the minimum of $1 million in guaranteed name, image and likeness money that will go to each of the eight teams competing in the neutral-site tournament that begins Tuesday will create a precedent for other such events. EverWonder Studios CEO Ian Orefice, who co-founded Players with former AND1 CEO Seth Berger, compared this event to last year's inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament that played its semifinals and final in Las Vegas by saying it "did really well to reinvigorate the fan base at the beginning of the year." "We're excited that we're able to really change the paradigm in college basketball on the economics," Orefice said. "But for us, it's about the long term. How do we use the momentum that is launching with the 2024 Players Era Festival and be the catalyst not to change one event, but to change college basketball for the future." Orefice and Berger didn't disclose financial details, but said the event will come close to breaking even this year and that revenue is in eight figures. Orefice said the bulk of the revenue will come from relationships with MGM, TNT Sports and Publicis Sport & Entertainment as well as sponsors that will be announced later. Both organizers said they are so bullish on the tournament's prospects that they already are planning ahead. Money made from this year's event, Orefice said, goes right back into the company. "We're really in this for the long haul," Orefice said. "So we're not looking at it on a one-year basis." Rick Giles is president of the Gazelle Group, which also operates several similar events, including the College Basketball Invitational. He was skeptical the financial numbers would work. Giles said in addition to more than $8 million going to the players, there were other expenses such as the guarantees to the teams. He said he didn't know if the tournament would make up the difference with ticket sales, broadcast rights and sponsorship money. The top bowl of the MGM Grand Garden Arena will be curtained off. "The math is highly challenging," Giles said. "Attendance and ticket revenues are not going to come anywhere close to covering that. They haven't announced any sponsors that I'm aware of. So it all sort of rests with their media deal with Turner and how much capital they want to commit to it to get these players paid." David Carter, a University of Southern California adjunct professor who also runs the Sports Business Group consultancy, said even if the Players isn't a financial success this year, the question is whether there will be enough interest to move forward. "If there is bandwidth for another tournament and if the TV or the streaming ratings are going to be there and people are going to want to attend and companies are going to want to sponsor, then, yeah, it's probably going to work," Carter said. "But it may take them time to gain that traction." Both founders said they initially were met with skepticism about putting together such an event, especially from teams they were interested in inviting. Houston was the first school to commit, first offering an oral pledge early in the year and then signing a contract in April. That created momentum for others to join, and including the No. 6 Cougars, half the field is ranked. "We have the relationships to operate a great event," Berger said. "We had to get coaches over those hurdles, and once they knew that we were real, schools got on board really quickly." The founders worked with the NCAA to make sure the tournament abided by that organization's rules, so players must appear at ancillary events in order to receive NIL money. Strict pay for play is not allowed, though there are incentives for performance. The champion, for example, will receive $1.5 million in NIL money. Now the pressure is on to pull off the event and not create the kind of headlines that can dog it for years to come. "I think everybody in the marketplace is watching what's going to happen (this) week and, more importantly, what happens afterwards," Giles said. "Do the players get paid on a timely basis? And if they do, that means that Turner or somebody has paid way more than the market dictates? And the question will be: Can that continue?" CREIGHTON: P oint guard Steven Ashworth likely won’t play in the No. 21 Bluejays’ game against San Diego State in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas. Ashworth sprained his right ankle late in a loss to Nebraska on Friday and coach Greg McDermott said afterward he didn’t know how long he would be out. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Latest loss shows issues go beyond coach as Bears' skid hits 7 in first game under Thomas BrownBy LISA MASCARO and ALANNA DURKIN RICHER WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Ethics Committee’s long-awaited report on Matt Gaetz documents a trove of salacious allegations , including sex with an underage girl, that tanked the Florida Republican’s bid to lead the Justice Department . For the agents removing immigrants, it’s a painstaking process Citing text messages, travel receipts, online payments and testimony, the bipartisan committee paints a picture of a lifestyle in which Gaetz and others connected with younger women for drug-fueled parties, events or trips, with the expectation the women would be paid for their participation. The former congressman, who filed a last-minute lawsuit to try to block the report’s release on Monday, slammed the committee’s findings. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and has insisted he never had sex with a minor. And a Justice Department investigation into the allegations ended without any criminal charges filed against him. “Giving funds to someone you are dating — that they didn’t ask for — and that isn’t ‘charged’ for sex is now prostitution?!?” Gaetz wrote in one post on Monday. “There is a reason they did this to me in a Christmas Eve-Eve report and not in a courtroom of any kind where I could present evidence and challenge witnesses.” Here’s a look at some of the committee’s key findings: The committee found that between 2017 and 2020, Gaetz paid tens of thousands of dollars to women “likely in connection with sexual activity and/or drug use.” He paid the women using through online services such as PayPal, Venmo, and CashApp and with cash or check, the committee said. The committee said it found evidence that Gaetz understood the “transactional nature” of his relationships with the women. The report points to one text exchange in which Gaetz balked at a woman’s request that he send her money, “claiming she only gave him a ‘drive by.’” Women interviewed by the committee said there was a “general expectation of sex,” the report said. One woman who received more than $5,000 from Gaetz between 2018 and 2019 said that “99 percent of the time” that when she hung out with Gaetz “there was sex involved.” However, Gaetz was in a long-term relationship with one of the women he paid, so “some of the payments may have been of a legitimate nature,” the committee said. Text messages obtained by the committee also show that Gaetz would ask the women to bring drugs to their “rendezvous,” the report said. While most of his encounters with the women were in Florida, the committee said Gaetz also traveled “on several occasions” with women whom he paid for sex. The report includes text message exchanges in which Gaetz appears to be inviting various women to events, getaways or parties, and arranging airplane travel and lodging. Gaetz associate Joel Greenberg, who pleaded guilty to sex trafficking charges in 2021, initially connected with women through an online service. In one text with a 20-year-old woman, Greenberg suggested if she has a friend, the four of them could meet up. The woman responded that she usually does “$400 per meet.” Greenberg replied: “He understands the deal,” along with a smiley face emoji. Greenberg asks if they are old enough to drink alcohol, and sent the woman a picture of Gaetz. The woman responded that her friend found him “really cute.” “Well, he’s down here for only for the day, we work hard and play hard,” Greenberg replied. The report details a party in July 2017 in which Gaetz is accused of having sex with “multiple women, including the 17-year-old, for which they were paid.” The committee pointed to “credible testimony” from the now-woman herself as well as “multiple individuals” who corroborated the allegation. The then-17-year-old — who had just completed her junior year in high school — told the committee that Gaetz paid her $400 in cash that night, “which she understood to be payment for sex,” according to the report. The woman acknowledged that she had taken ecstasy the night of the party, but told the committee that she was “certain” of her sexual encounters with the then-congressman. There’s no evidence that Gaetz knew she was a minor when he had sex with her, the committee said. The woman told the committee she didn’t tell Gaetz she was under 18 at the time and that he didn’t how old she was. Rather, the committee said Gaetz learned she was a minor more than a month after the party. But he stayed in touch with her after that and met up with her for “commercial sex” again less than six months after she turned 18, according to the committee. In sum, the committee said it authorized 29 subpoenas for documents and testimony, reviewed nearly 14,000 documents and contacted more than two dozen witnesses. But when the committee subpoenaed Gaetz for his testimony, he failed to comply. “Gaetz pointed to evidence that would ‘exonerate’ him yet failed to produce any such materials,” the committee said. Gaetz “continuously sought to deflect, deter, or mislead the Committee in order to prevent his actions from being exposed.” The report details a months-long process that dragged into a year as it sought information from Gaetz that he decried as “nosey” and a “weaponization” of government against him. In one notable exchange, investigators were seeking information about the expenses for a 2018 get-away with multiple women to the Bahamas. Gaetz ultimately offered up his plane ticket receipt “to” the destination, but declined to share his return “from” the Bahamas. The report said his return on a private plane and other expenses paid by an associate were in violation of House gift rules. In another Gaetz told the committee he would “welcome” the opportunity to respond to written questions. Yet, after it sent a list of 16 questions, Gaetz said publicly he would “no longer” voluntarily cooperate. He called the investigation “frivolous,” adding: “Every investigation into me ends the same way: my exoneration.” The report said that while Gaetz’s obstruction of the investigation does not rise to a criminal violation it is inconsistent with the requirement that all members of Congress “act in a manner that reflects creditably upon the House.” The committee began its review of Gaetz in April 2021 and deferred its work in response to a Justice Department request. It renewed its work shortly after Gaetz announced that the Justice Department had ended a sex trafficking investigation without filing any charges against him. The committee sought records from the Justice Department about the probe, but the agency refused, saying it doesn’t disclose information about investigations that don’t result in charges. The committee then subpoenaed the Justice Department, but after a back-and-forth between officials and the committee, the department handed over “publicly reported information about the testimony of a deceased individual,” according to the report. “To date, DOJ has provided no meaningful evidence or information to the Committee or cited any lawful basis for its responses,” the committee said. Many of the women who the committee spoke to had already given statements to the Justice Department and didn’t want to “relive their experience,” the committee said. “They were particularly concerned with providing additional testimony about a sitting congressman in light of DOJ’s lack of action on their prior testimony,” the report said. The Justice Department, however, never handed over the women’s statements. The agency’s lack of cooperation — along with its request that the committee pause its investigation — significantly delayed the committee’s probe, lawmakers said.Stock market today: Wall Street rises at the start of a holiday-shortened weekfb 777 casino login

Following a thorough investigation by health and safety inspectors, it was discovered that the cause of the fainting incidents could be attributed to poor ventilation and inadequate cleanliness in the women's bath area. The lack of proper air circulation and sanitation measures may have contributed to a buildup of harmful bacteria and pollutants, leading to the adverse health effects observed among the bathhouse patrons.

Liverpool's Egyptian talisman, Mohamed Salah, will see his contract come to an end in 2023. The prolific goal-scorer has been a key figure for the Reds in recent years, and negotiations for a new deal are expected to be closely watched. The co-hosts of The View were at odds yet again over the post-election political climate on the talk show's most recent episode. On Monday, Nov. 25, Whoopi Goldberg , Alyssa Farah Griffin , Sara Haines and Ana Navarro weighed in on the differences between the country's reaction to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential win and the current state of affairs, recalling the widespread protests (including the massive Women's March in January 2017) that erupted eight years ago. "I think people are exhausted, I think they are looking at, you know, taking care of themselves before they take care of America," Navarro said. She also noted that different types of protest can still be effective. For example, she referenced Matt Gaetz's decision to step down from Attorney General consideration after receiving significant backlash. "The public scrutiny of that and all of the coverage of that, even Mattt Gaetz said when he resigned, 'This became too big of a distraction,'" Haines pointed out. "That was resistance. It may just not look like what everyone is thinking it is," she continued. Goldberg offered her take, which is that people are taking a "wait and see" approach to the situation. “Wait to see what he’s going to do before you know what you can do and what you must do," she said. Griffin—who was the White House director of strategic communications and Assistant to the President in 2020 when Trump was in office—had a different outlook from that of her co-hosts. “God’s honest truth, I kind of always thought Trump would win, until maybe the final days, just ’cause it felt like Kamala Harris had this real momentum,” she said. “But the signs were there.” "I'm shying away from this sort of apocalyptic, it's all, you know, we need to be losing sleep over it...I root for America, so I root for a smart, serious Donald Trump presidency, and I root for pushback when he doesn’t do things that are smart,” Griffin continued. "All those things are great to dream about,” Goldberg replied, which got a big laugh from the audience. Next: Whoopi Goldberg Scolds View Co-Hosts During Heated On-Air Political Debate

Bankruptcy Court Approves Winning Akamai Bid for Select Assets of Edgio

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge won't be bothered if free agent Juan Soto gets a bigger deal from the New York Yankees than the captain's $360 million , nine-year contract. “It ain’t my money. I really don’t care as long as we get the best players, we get the most that we can, I’m happy with whatever,” Judge said Friday, a day after he was a unanimous winner of his second AL MVP award. “That's never been something on my mind about who gets paid the most.” Judge led the major leagues with 58 homers, 144 RBIs and 133 walks while hitting .322 as New York reached the World Series for the first time since 2009, only to lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers . Soto batted .288 with 41 homers, 109 RBIs and 129 walks in his first season with the Yankees and finished third in MVP voting, also trailing Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt. Jr. A free agent at 26, Soto has met with the Yankees, Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox, and he plans to meet with the Philadelphia Phillies, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the meetings have not been publicly announced. Negotiations are not likely to intensify until after Thanksgiving. Judge hasn’t spoken with Soto since the World Series. Judge went through the free-agent experience after hitting an AL record 62 homers in 2022. “The best thing is to really give those guys space," Judge said. "I talked to him all season and he knows how we feel about him and I think the most important thing is now let him do his thing with his family, pray about it, talk with people and come to the right decision for him and his family.” Soto met with Yankees officials on Monday at a hotel in southern California, a group that included owner Hal Steinbrenner, team president Randy Levine, general manager Brian Cashman, manager Aaron Boone and senior adviser for baseball operations Omar Minaya. “We had a good meeting. It was a very honest back-and-forth dialogue, a couple hours long,” Steinbrenner said Wednesday. Asked how confident he was about keeping Soto, Steinbrenner said: “No idea. We’ll be in the mix. I’ll leave it at that.” Soto and Judge filled the Nos. 2 and 3 slots in the Yankees batting order in a franchise-record 153 games, topping the 145 of Joe Dugan and Babe Ruth in 1923, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. “I get to see a lot of pitches," Judge said. "He's going to be a tough at-bat in front of me. He’s going to wear down the pitcher right there in the first inning, within the first 15 pitches or so. Yeah, I think that was a big impact just having having a guy like that in front of you. "If I could have eight Juan Sotos in the lineup with me, I would love that.” After the World Series, Judge spent about a week in Tampa, Florida, where the Yankees hold spring training, and met with Steinbrenner. “We kind of just discussed a lot of things from Juan to other guys that are kind of out there that I think could definitely help this team,:" Judge said. "So I kind of just gave my input on a couple things.” Judge said when he agreed to his big deal in late 2022, Steinbrenner wanted to have a deeper relationship. They've been meeting every week or two, and pitcher Gerrit Cole has developed a similar exchange with the owner. “I think just having that relationship to where I can kind of communicate with him about what I’m seeing, what I’m feeling, what I see with the guys, what I see against other guys that we play against,” Judge said. “I think it’s a cool part to where I think just the more communication you have from top to bottom, it just — it makes everybody better.” Judge's contract is baseball's fourth largest behind the deals of the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani ($700 million), the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout ($426.5 million) and the Dodgers' Mookie Betts ($365 million). Judge cited the example of teammate Giancarlo Stanton, whose $325 million deal was the highest when he joined the Yankees ahead of the 2018 season but now ranks tied for ninth. “Even though he signed one of those — the first big mega-contracts back in Miami, once he came here he didn’t care about the highest-paid guy. He just wanted good players around him,” Judge said. In joining Mickey Mantle in 1956 as the Yankees' only unanimous MVPs, Judge credited his teammates. “You look at every single one of my teammates in that room and know that each and every single one of them impacted me in a way that put me in that position,” Judge said. “So it’s always going to be a team award in my book.” ___ AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB Ronald Blum, The Associated PressEagles stars Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown say relationship is 'good' after teammate suggests fissureBUENOS AIRES (AP) — Thiago Messi, the eldest son of the Argentina star, has made his debut in the “Newell’s Cup” tournament in the countryside city of Rosario. The 12-year-old Messi played with the No. 10 jersey of an Inter Miami youth team, which lost 1-0 on Monday to host Newell’s Old Boys in the traditional under-13 competition. The team also played Tuesday. Lionel Messi took his first steps as a footballer in the Argentinian club in Rosario, 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of capital Buenos Aires. Thiago's mother, Antonela Roccuzzo, and several members of his family, including grandparents Jorge Messi and Celia Cuccittini, were in the stands to watch him play. Lionel Messi did not attend. Thiago, who was substituted in the second half, played with his friend Benjamín Suárez, son of Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, Messi's teammate and close friend at Barcelona and now at Inter Miami. Messi and Suárez are in Rosario after Inter Miami’s early elimination in the MLS playoffs. On Sunday, they watched a friendly game of Inter Miami's U13 team against Unión at the same sports complex. Canadian Cabinet ministers say they had ‘productive' meeting with Trump teamAmong elites across the ideological spectrum, there's one point of unifying agreement: Americans are bitterly divided. What if that's wrong? What if elites are the ones who are bitterly divided while most Americans are fairly unified? History rarely lines up perfectly with the calendar (the "sixties" didn't really start until the decade was almost over). But politically, the 21st century neatly began in 2000, when the election ended in a tie and the color coding of electoral maps became enshrined as a kind of permanent tribal color war of "red vs. blue." Elite understanding of politics has been stuck in this framework ever since. Politicians and voters have leaned into this alleged political reality, making it seem all the more real in the process. I loathe the phrase "perception is reality," but in politics it has the reifying power of self-fulfilling prophecy. Like rival noble families in medieval Europe, elites have been vying for power and dominance on the arrogant assumption that their subjects share their concern for who rules rather than what the rulers can deliver. In 2018, the group More in Common published a massive report on the "hidden tribes" of American politics. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." Lacking a narrative might seem like a very postmodern problem, but in a postmodern elite culture, postmodern problems are real problems. It's worth noting that red vs. blue America didn't emerge ex nihilo. The 1990s were a time when the economy and government seemed to be working, at home and abroad. As a result, elites leaned into the narcissism of small differences to gain political and cultural advantage. They remain obsessed with competing, often apocalyptic, narratives. That leaves out most Americans. The gladiatorial combatants of cable news, editorial pages and academia, and their superfan spectators, can afford these fights. Members of the exhausted majority are more interested in mere competence. I think that's the hidden unity elites are missing. This is why we keep throwing incumbent parties out of power: They get elected promising competence but get derailed -- or seduced -- by fan service to, or trolling of, the elites who dominate the national conversation. There's a difference between competence and expertise. One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. This is a particular problem for the left because it is far more invested in credentialism than the right. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. The New York Times' Ezra Klein says he's tired of defending the authority of government institutions. Rather, "I want them to work." One of the reasons progressives find Trump so offensive is his absolute inability to speak the language of expertise -- which is full of coded elite shibboleths. But Trump veritably shouts the language of competence. I don't mean he is actually competent at governing. But he is effectively blunt about calling leaders, experts and elites -- of both parties -- stupid, ineffective, weak and incompetent. He lost in 2020 because voters didn't believe he was actually good at governing. He won in 2024 because the exhausted majority concluded the Biden administration was bad at it. Nostalgia for the low-inflation pre-pandemic economy was enough to convince voters that Trumpian drama is the tolerable price to pay for a good economy. About 3 out of 4 Americans who experienced "severe hardship" because of inflation voted for Trump. The genius of Trump's most effective ad -- "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" -- was that it was simultaneously culture-war red meat and an argument that Harris was more concerned about boutique elite concerns than everyday ones. If Trump can actually deliver competent government, he could make the Republican Party the majority party for a generation. For myriad reasons, that's an if so big it's visible from space. But the opportunity is there -- and has been there all along.

( ) shares currently come with a of 9.3%. That’s higher than the average, well above , and a lot better than the interest available on cash. That makes it look as though investors looking for passive income should be piling into the stock. If only it were that easy – the reality is (unfortunately) a bit more complicated. Five-year returns Five years ago, Legal & General was trading with a 6.6% dividend yield. Things were different back then, but this was still an eye-catching return. Since then, the company has grown its shareholder distributions each year. The average annual increase has been only around 3%, but it’s been impressively consistent. The trouble is, this hasn’t translated into a great result for shareholders. While it has paid out a total of 94.37p per share, this has mostly been offset by the stock falling 82.44p in that time. As a result, investors who bought the stock in December 2020 are 3.9% in total on their investment. That’s lower than the FTSE 100, well below inflation, and even worse than the return available on cash. Is the dividend safe? A 9.3% dividend offers a lot more protection from a falling share price than a 6.6% one. And the yield hasn’t been at this level at any point in the last 10 years. Management is forecasting a 2% annual increase in the dividend with additional cash to be distributed through share buybacks. But investors might initially wonder how Legal & General is going to fund this. The firm currently pays out more to shareholders than it brings in as net income. But while this might look like a source of concern, it’s probably less of a risk than it initially appears. At the end of 2023, Legal & General has more than £9bn of excess capital after meeting its Solvency Capital Requirement. This should mean the company is able to meet its ongoing dividend commitments. Outlook In terms of future growth, Legal & General’s main engine is its Pensions Risk Transfer business. It takes on future guaranteed pension obligations from other companies – in exchange for a fee. Management is optimistic about the pipeline for new deals over the next few years. But investors need to be clear that the quality is there as well as the quantity. Getting cash up front before paying out costs later is a nice structure. But the deals have an asymmetric risk structure – the amount Legal & General can make is fixed while the potential liabilities are not. Even including the returns the firm can generate by investing the premiums, it will be a long time until the profitability of the contracts becomes clear. And this is where the risk comes from for investors. A no-brainer? As an investment, Legal & General shares are anything but a no-brainer. The nature of the firm’s potential liabilities means there’s a lot of uncertainty about the future, especially over the long term. That’s why the dividend yield is so high – investors need something to give them a margin of safety against the ongoing risks. While 9.3% might be enough for some, I’m looking elsewhere.US President-elect Donald Trump has sided with key supporter and billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk in a public dispute over the use of the H-1B visa, saying he fully backs the program for foreign tech workers opposed by some of his supporters. or signup to continue reading Trump's remarks followed a series of social media posts from Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who vowed to go to "war" to defend the visa program for foreign tech workers. Trump, who moved to limit the visas' use during his first presidency, told The New York Post on Saturday he was likewise in favour of the visa program. "I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I've been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It's a great program," he was quoted as saying. Musk, a naturalised US citizen born in South Africa, has held an H-1B visa, and his electric-car company Tesla obtained 724 of the visas this year. H-1B visas are typically for three-year periods, though holders can extend them or apply for green cards. The altercation was set off earlier this week by far-right activists who criticised Trump's selection of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian American venture capitalist, to be an adviser on artificial intelligence, saying he would have influence on the Trump administration's immigration policies. Musk's tweet was directed at Trump's supporters and immigration hard-liners who have increasingly pushed for the H-1B visa program to be scrapped amid a heated debate over immigration and the place of skilled immigrants and foreign workers brought into the country on work visas. On Friday, Steve Bannon, a longtime Trump confidante, critiqued "big tech oligarchs" for supporting the H-1B program and cast immigration as a threat to Western civilisation. In response, Musk and many other tech billionaires drew a line between what they view as legal immigration and illegal immigration. Trump has promised to deport all immigrants who are in the US illegally, deploy tariffs to help create more jobs for American citizens and severely restrict immigration. The visa issue highlights how tech leaders like Musk -- who has taken an important role in the presidential transition, advising on key personnel and policy areas -- are now drawing scrutiny from his base. The US tech industry relies on the government's H-1B visa program to hire foreign skilled workers to help run its companies, a labour force that critics say undercuts wages for American citizens. Musk has spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars helping Trump get elected in November. He has posted regularly this week about the lack of homegrown talent to fill all the needed positions within American tech companies. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. Why Trump's Tariffs Underwhelmed The Market, And Why Was Vietnam ExcludedAn online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump’s political coalitionH aving pursued higher studies in Japan, I was deeply inspired by their development, culture, and attitudes. The Japanese transport system, in particular, stands as a symbol of efficiency, professionalism, and meticulous planning. This article explores into the invaluable lessons from Japan’s approach to public transport and infrastructure, offering insights for Sri Lanka to embrace a holistic and progressive vision. Japan’s transport system integrates convenience, punctuality, and user-centric design. Buses, trams, trains, and taxis operate seamlessly, reflecting a deep respect for public service. Short-distance travel is primarily facilitated by buses and trams. Most of the trams run on electricity, making them environmentally friendly. These systems demonstrate Japan’s commitment to serving all stakeholders, including the elderly, differently-abled individuals, and families. A System Rooted in Discipline and Professionalism One defining feature of Japan’s transport system is the “one-man operation” model for short distance operations, where the driver manages both the operation of the vehicle and passenger transactions. Despite the dual responsibilities, services remain highly punctual and organised. Passengers are encouraged to pay fares accurately, facilitated by onboard machines that allow for cash adjustments. The trust placed in passengers to pay their due amount reflects the integrity of Japanese society. Punctuality is another hallmark of the system. Buses and trams arrive at each stop precisely as scheduled, with deviations measured in seconds. Drivers, irrespective of the vehicle type, significantly shape the image of Japan’s transport system. Known for their politeness, punctuality, and attentiveness, drivers often bow to greet passengers, reflecting respect and professionalism. Rigorous training programmes equip them with technical skills and soft skills, ensuring they manage time efficiently, prioritise safety, and handle challenges calmly. Drivers’ formal attire—white shirt and a cap complete with ties and gloves—reinforces their professional image and inspires trust among passengers. This commitment to service excellence ensures that every journey reflects the nation’s dedication to public welfare. Accessibility and Inclusivity for All Japanese transport infrastructure is designed to cater to all members of society. Drop-down curbs and ramps at the junction of side walks and pedestrian crossings as well as bus stops and tram stations facilitate wheelchair users, parents with strollers, and travelers with luggage. Tactile tiles on sidewalks guide visually impaired pedestrians, while sound systems at pedestrian crossings ensure safe and independent mobility. These thoughtful features underline the inclusivity ingrained in Japanese transport planning. Platforms for trams and trains are designed to minimise gaps, ensuring that boarding and alighting are safe and convenient for everyone. The bus doors are equipped with mechanisms to lower the vehicle’s height at stops, making it easier for passengers to step in. These inclusive practices not only enhance usability but also reflect the nation’s commitment to equitable access. Integrating Technology for Efficiency Japanese transport systems are a testament to the seamless integration of technology. Bus halts and tram stations provide detailed information, including route numbers, timetables, and live updates. Passengers can track the arrival of the next bus or tram via online platforms, enabling precise journey planning. Ticket vending machines and automated gates at train stations simplify transactions, reducing wait times and ensuring a smooth flow of passengers.Train platforms are marked with compartment numbers, allowing passengers to wait exactly where their designated car will stop, stream lining the boarding process. The Marvel of the Shinkansen Japan’s Shinkansen, often referred to as the “bullet train,” operates at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour and is a global model of speed, reliability, and punctuality. According to Japan Railways, the average delay of a Shinkansen train in 2021 was just 24 seconds, demonstrating the precision of its operations. Beyond speed, the Shinkansen offers a travel experience that prioritises comfort, with spacious seating, clean carriages, and onboard amenities such as Wi-Fi and catering services. Integrated with Japan’s extensive network of local and metro trains, it creates a seamless transport ecosystem that connects urban hubs with rural areas. As former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe aptly stated, “Infrastructure is not just about moving goods or people; it’s about connecting hearts and creating new opportunities.” Stations themselves are well-equipped, offering shops, dining options, waiting areas, and hygienic restrooms. This focus on passenger convenience extends to long-distance buses, which operate with similar accuracy and comfort. Such comprehensive facilities ensure that public transport is not just a means of travel but an enjoyable experience. A Culture of Respect and Order The discipline and orderliness of Japanese society are mirrored in their transport systems. Public transport is free from disruptions such as unauthorized vendors, beggars, or parked vehicles obstructing access. Passengers maintain decorum by avoiding loud conversations or disruptive behavior, ensuring a peaceful journey for everyone. Safety is a cornerstone of the system. Regular announcements remind passengers to hold on tightly during travel, hold their belongings not to interrupt or disturb fellow passengers, and be courteous to fellow commuters. These practices foster a sense of community and shared responsibility, making public transport a reliable and respectful space. Inspiring Stories of Public Commitment A touching example of Japan’s dedication to public convenience is the story of Ky-Shirataki Station in Hokkaido. This station was kept operational to serve a single high school student, ensuring her access to education until her graduation. Shortly after she completed her studies, the station was closed. This act demonstrates the Japanese government’s recognition that long-term societal benefits often outweigh immediate economic returns. Such a commitment to individual needs highlights the value placed on public service. Lessons for Sri Lanka Sri Lanka’s transport system can benefit immensely from adopting Japan’s best practices. Key lessons include: Punctuality and Discipline: Implementing stringent schedules and fostering a culture of timeliness among operators and passengers. Inclusivity: Designing infrastructure to accommodate differently-abled individuals and other vulnerable groups. Integration of Technology: Introducing live tracking systems, cashless payments, and automated ticketing to enhance efficiency. Professionalism: Encouraging high standards of service, with well-dressed and courteous staff. Cleanliness and Safety: Maintaining hygienic and secure facilities across all transport modes. Comprehensive Planning: Viewing transport as an enabler of broader societal goals, including education, healthcare, and economic growth. By adopting these principles, Sri Lanka can create a transport system that not only meets immediate needs but also fosters long-term development and societal progress. A Holistic Approach to Development Japan’s transport success is part of a broader, integrated development strategy. The interconnectedness of sectors such as education, healthcare, tourism, and agriculture is well-recognised. Transportation enables access to schools, hospitals, markets, and tourist destinations, underscoring its central role in national development. To match this holistic approach, Sri Lanka must consider the ripple effects of transport investments across various sectors. Policymakers should prioritise projects that enhance connectivity, reduce inequalities, and improve quality of life. A cohesive strategy will ensure that investments in transport yield benefits far beyond the immediate scope. A Call to Transform Sri Lanka’s Transport System An effective transport system mirrors a nation’s progress and values. Japan’s example illustrates how discipline, technology, and collective commitment can create a seamless network that benefits all. Sri Lanka must prioritise long-term investments, align policies, and adopt Japan’s best practices to build a transport system that fosters national pride. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” By investing in an inclusive and efficient transport system, Sri Lanka can ensure equitable access to mobility while driving economic growth. “A developed country is not where the poor own cars, but where the rich use public transport.” Let this be our vision for Sri Lanka—a nation connected not only by roads and railways but by a shared commitment to progress and unity.Trying to fit in routines around work can be tricky, especially for women. New research from Vitality’s ‘Active women, healthy lives’ report finds that eight in 10 women under 50 say their demanding work schedules are holding them back from being active. As a result, a quarter of women exercise less than once a week (25%), and over half of women exercise less than they used to (52%). Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, in partnership with Vitality, is launching Walk Out to Work Out, a new initiative encouraging women to reclaim time during their busy working days to stay active. Jessica Ennis-Hill has shared a few tips to help women fit in exercise around their working day (Image: Vitality) Additionally, she has shared some top tips on how to fit some exercise in during the working day. The full ‘Active women, healthy lives’ report can be found on the website here . 1. Incorporate Exercise ‘Snacks’ Jessica shared: "As a busy mum and business owner, I know how challenging it can be to fit in long workouts. That’s why I swear by short bursts of activity—what I call "exercise snacks." "Whether it’s a 5-minute stretch between meetings or a quick walk to clear your mind, these small moments can really add up and keep you feeling active without disrupting your day. 2. Walk and Talk Jessica explained: "When I need to take calls or brainstorm ideas, I often head out for a walk with my dog while doing it – ticking off two things I have to do. I find it not only helps me stay active but also boosts my creativity and focus. "Turn phone calls or virtual meetings into walking meetings where possible. It’s a simple way to add movement while staying productive." (function (d, s, n) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; js = d.createElement(s); js.className = n; js.src = "//player.ex.co/player/ac4343e7-234e-4d6a-927a-1a778f69ccc8"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); js.setAttribute('programmatic', 'true'); js.onload = function () { const playerApi233613 = ExCoPlayer.connect('ac4343e7-234e-4d6a-927a-1a778f69ccc8'); playerApi233613.init({ "autoPlay": false, "mute": true, "showAds": true, "playbackMode": "play-in-view", "content": { "playFirst": [ { "title": "How much water should you drink daily?", "src": "https://large-cdn.ex.co/transformations/production/41f11a67-8a1f-4249-8ae7-12b95862b6e3/720p.mp4" } ] }, "sticky": { "mode": "persistent", "closeButton": true, "pauseOnClose": true, "desktop": { "enabled": false, "position": "bottom-right" }, "mobile": { "enabled": false, "position": "upper-small" } }}); }; }(document, 'script', 'exco-player')); 3. Reclaim Your Lunch Break "As someone who’s juggled intense schedules, I’ve learned the importance of protecting my lunch break," Jessica said. "I use part of it for physical activity, whether it’s a quick workout, a jog, or a calming walk. "If you feel like your lunch break has disappeared into your workday, speak to your employer about how you can reclaim that time — it’s yours to use for your well-being. I suggest putting it in the diary as a meeting – this will ring-fence the time for you." 4. Advocate for Active Policies Jessica explained: "I have worked with a lot of different sponsors and their teams and I’ve seen the difference it makes when workplaces support physical activity. "If you’re struggling to stay active, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts with your employer. Suggest ideas like walking meetings, group exercise activities, or even flexible working hours to make staying active more achievable. "Remember, these changes benefit everyone, from employees to the company itself. Recommended reading: 5. Set Active Reminders Jessica said: "I rely on technology to keep me on track. Fitness trackers or simple alarms can remind you to stand, stretch, or take a short walk every hour. "Even small movements like this can make a huge difference to your energy levels and focus throughout the day."

Freedom is the ability to make choices without encroaching on another person’s rights. It also relates to the power to earn and to live in any way you choose. Individuals who feel free and empowered have more control over their lives, resulting in higher levels of productivity. The advantages of freedom are massive and can lead to a greater sense of wellbeing, a higher GDP per capita and a happier society. Freedoms can be categorized in various ways: the most obvious are freedom of speech, freedom to join political parties, trade unions or clubs and the right to protest. These are essential to society and allow individuals to express their opinions, ideas, values and beliefs freely. Another form of freedom involves the personal freedom to live where you want to, work in any job you choose and pursue any hobby or passion that you desire. This personal freedom can help build self-esteem, allowing individuals to grow and become who they want to be. It can also result in higher levels of personal wealth and a happier and healthier lifestyle. One of the most significant benefits of freedom is that it allows individuals to express themselves and create new ideas that can address societal issues. Freedom of expression can help with scientific and technological breakthroughs, and it can also help to reduce poverty and inequality within a society. The concept of freedom also relates to the ability to live in a country that respects human rights and does not violate the dignity of its citizens. This can include a range of activities, from being able to vote in elections to traveling freely around the world. The right to travel can also provide people with the opportunity to experience different cultures and learn about other countries. There are many different images of freedom, but perhaps the most powerful is that of a freed slave or prisoner. It is this image that has been used most often to illustrate the value of freedom and it is this which we will use as our main illustration. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump’s political coalitionNoneWalmart has became the latest major corporation to ditch its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. That comes as welcome news for Americans who are sick and tired of woke nonsense. The move came after conservative activist Robby Starbuck threatened to call a pre-Black Friday boycott to highlight the world’s largest retailer’s “woke” policies. Starbuck, who has over 700,000 followers on social media platform X alone, has made it his mission to get companies to end . He recounted in a Monday post that Walmart representatives actually reached out to him when they learned he was investigating the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company. “We were able to have frank conversations with Walmart, and as I’ve said for a long time I don’t ask companies to take on my political views. I am simply advocating for corporate neutrality,” Starbuck said. “I am not OK with left-wing policies being forced on me and people like me via things like DEI.” His goal is to “change corporate America and get them back to a policy of sanity and neutrality,” he explained. MASSIVE news: Walmart is ending their woke policies. I can now exclusively tell you what’s changing and how it happened. Last week I told execs at that I was doing a story on wokeness there. Instead we had productive conversations to find solutions. Below are the... — Robby Starbuck (@robbystarbuck) Bloomberg noted Starbuck’s apparent role in Monday’s announcement by . Walmart has decided to no longer participate in the pro-LGBTQ Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. The retailer said it will not carry inappropriate sexual and transgender products marketed toward children. Walmart will discontinue its racial equity training and stop funding its Racial Equity Center, which it established in 2020 in response to the George Floyd protests. Further, the corporation will no longer evaluate its suppliers based on certain demographic criteria. Bloomberg reported that Walmart has an ethnically diverse workforce, with people of color making up over half of its 1.6 million employees in the U.S. Starbuck said that other companies that have pulled back on DEI include: Tractor Supply, , Polaris, Indian Motorcycle, Lowe’s, , Coors, Stanley Black & Decker, Jack Daniels, DeWalt tools, Craftsman, Caterpillar, Boeing, and Toyota. Walmart told its decision to reverse course on DEI policies had been in the works for months, but perhaps attention from Starbuck nudged it along. The news outlet pointed out that corporations have been looking at the U.S. Supreme Court decision in June 2023 finding affirmative action in college admissions is unconstitutional and realizing they may be next to face similar legal challenges to their DEI policies. reported, “A Walmart spokesperson said some of its policy changes have been in progress for a while. For example, it has been moving away from using the word DEI in job titles and communications and started to use the word ‘belonging.'” The demise of wokeness cannot come soon enough. It’s reassuring that companies like Walmart are seeing the light, too. We are committed to truth and accuracy in all of our journalism. Teen actor Hudson Meek, who appeared in ‘Baby Driver,’ dies after falling from moving vehicle

Oprah Winfrey’s hypocrisy and Robert De Niro’s suggestion that he might to leave the United States are reminders that, at the end of the day, celebrities are just people — with no greater understanding of the political landscape than anyone else. Their declarations of doom and gloom have become background noise in a country that is tired of being talked down to. For years, celebrities have wielded their platforms like megaphones, hoping to sway voters and shape public opinion. Yet, despite their drama and declarations, their political star power appears to be waning. Take Oprah Winfrey, for example, who found herself embroiled in controversy after it was revealed her organization accepted a significant amount of money to conduct a townhall with Vice President Kamala Harris. But now, critics are left asking: Did Oprah’s endorsement even move the needle for voters? Was there anyone genuinely on the fence about Harris who decided, “You know what, if Oprah’s on board, I’m in”? The fallout from this has only further eroded trust in celebrity endorsements. Then there are the celebrity escape plans. Robert De Niro, for example, suggested in 2016 he might leave the United States if Trump won. But what is truly laughable is the hypocrisy of the countless celebrities who back in 2016 shouted: “If Trump wins, I’m out of here!” Cher and others were loud and proud about their disdain for a Trump presidency. Yet, when the moment came, they stayed put — clinging to their mansions in the United States rather than booking flights to Canada. It begs the question: Why the double standard? If America under Trump is as terrible as they claim, why not leave? Or is it that, deep down, they know there is no better place to live than the United States? Celebrities threatening to leave the country have become as predictable as award-show standing ovations. These threats serve less as genuine convictions and more as performative gestures meant to energize their social media followings. Yet, the average American sees right through it. For most working-class voters, celebrity complaints ring hollow when they come from people who enjoy wealth and freedom. The idea that Robert De Niro, who became famous portraying gritty, tough-as-nails characters, feels so aggrieved by election outcomes that he might move abroad is almost comical. Moreover, the notion that these stars believe their opinions hold more weight than the average American’s is a glaring example of Hollywood’s elitism. Their proclamations of moral superiority may resonate in the echo chambers of coastal cities, but for the rest of the country, it is just noise. And here is the kicker: President-elect Donald Trump now has more followers on X than Taylor Swift, one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. The fact that Trump has outpaced the ultimate celebrity in social media influence shows that America is not as enamored with Hollywood elites as it once was. A larger question looms: Do celebrity endorsements even matter in politics anymore? Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign surely thought so when it brought in Oprah, but the results suggest otherwise. Harris’ historic unpopularity has not been bolstered by celebrity star power. In fact, it could be argued that Hollywood endorsements hurt more than they help. Many Americans see them as out of touch, self-serving or even condescending. After all, why should a multimillionaire actor or singer have any more influence over an election than a small business owner in Ohio or a teacher in Texas? As Trump’s return to the White House sends shockwaves through the liberal establishment, perhaps it is time for Hollywood to take a hard look in the mirror. Their star power no longer carries the political weight it once did. Americans are increasingly skeptical of those who claim to speak for the “common man” while living in gated communities and vacationing in the South of France. The truth is, America is not perfect, but it is far from the dystopian nightmare Hollywood claims it will become under conservative leadership. And maybe, just maybe, it is time for these celebrities to stick to what they do best — entertaining — and leave the politics to the people. Yoon Seok-yeol, a former prosecutor general who led high-profile investigations into corruption scandals involving high-ranking officials, has now found himself at the center of a criminal probe. The National Assembly's request for his immediate arrest comes amidst allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of justice during his time as a prosecutor. The decision to pursue his arrest has sparked a heated debate within the political sphere, with supporters of Yoon arguing that he is being unfairly targeted for his anti-corruption efforts, while his critics point to a potential abuse of power during his tenure as prosecutor general.

Don McHenry scores 7 of his 29 points in OT to rally Western Kentucky past Murray State 81-76CARSON, Calif. — Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored in the first half, and the LA Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final with goals from their star forwards, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing decade, even finishing 26th in the 29-team league last year. But the Galaxy turned everything around this season with a high-scoring new lineup that finished second in the Western Conference and then streaked through the playoffs with a whopping 18 goals in five games to win another crown. Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable charge through the playoffs ended one win shy of its first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win MLS' playoff tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons. He was the MVP of the 2022 MLS Cup Final for the Galaxy's crosstown rival, Los Angeles FC. The Galaxy won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the Western Conference final. Puig watched the game in a suit, but his teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their fans during the celebration. Paintsil put the Galaxy ahead in the ninth minute when he ran onto that sublime pass from Brugman and pounded home his 14th MLS goal — including four in the playoffs — in the Ghanaian forward's outstanding first season. Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy's striker. Nealis got New York on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when he volleyed home a ball that got loose in LA's penalty area after a corner. The Galaxy's usually shaky defense gave up another handful of good chances before reaching halftime with a tenuous lead. The second half was lively, but scoreless. Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Gabriel Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose again in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. The Galaxy bench rushed onto the field and prematurely celebrated a victory in the seventh minute of injury time, only to be herded back off for another 30 seconds of play. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of traveling Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough on MLS' biggest stage. The Galaxy's Greg Vanney became the fourth coach to win an MLS title with two clubs. The former Galaxy player also won it all with Toronto in 2017. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández rebuilt itself this season with lesser-known young talents from around the world. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and the Ghanaian Paintsil out of Belgium, and the duo combined with incumbent Serbian striker Joveljic to form a potent attack that could outscore almost any MLS opponent. But the Galaxy also relied heavily on Puig, their Catalan catalyst and one of MLS' best players. Puig stayed in last week's game after injuring his knee, and he even delivered the decisive pass to Joveljic for the game's only goal.

A hypersonic underwater tunnel connecting the UK to the United States could see trains travelling at speeds of 3,000mph. But the dream of a trans-Atlantic train connecting London and New York would come at a price - almost £16billion ($20tn). The idea of a "Transatlantic Tunnel" has existed for a while. But developments in technology mean it may one day be possible. The world's richest man, Elon Musk, is one of those who has championed vacuum tube technology. He once proposed sending capsules through a vacuum environment to reduce air resistance. Currently a flight between the two cities takes around eight hours. Trains powered by conventional technology running underneath the ocean would not be able to make the journey fast enough to justify the cost of construction. The distance between the two global cities is more than 3,000 miles, and it would take years to build. The cost could be anything up to £15.5tn. But Musk and others say vacuum tube technology could hold the key and make the concept viable. The multi-billionaire introduced the concept in a white paper in 2013, and has also been a proponent of the field, organising student competitions and founding The Boring Company, focused on tunnelling technology. It would work by creating a vacuum within the tunnel and using pressurised vehicles. Trains would not face any air resistance within the tunnel. In theory, they could reach far higher speeds than conventional trains. Capsules darting along the structure could theoretically reach speeds of more than 3,000 mph. If that was to happen then a journey between the two great cities would barely take a hour. This design is sometimes called a "hyperloop". It might seem like the stuff of fantasy sci-fi but the age of hyperloop technology might be closer than we think, reports Newsweek . Trials of the technology are underway in India and China , with plans to integrate it into their high-speed rail systems nationwide. A Transatlantic Tunnel would be much more efficient and environmentally friendly than flying. Proposals for a tunnel are still unclear. While some have suggested a route underneath the ocean floor, others have favoured stilts or a floating tube, held in place by cables attached to the ocean floor. And judging by how long it took to build the Channel Tunnel linking France to the UK it won't be something we see in our lifetime. The link between Britain and France took more then six years to build. If the trans-Atlantic tunnel were built at the same speed, it would take 782 years.

Speed is hardly paramount for naval vessels — it's not always going to be the feature that wins a battle or even a war — but it doesn't hurt. Depending on the type of ship, speed can be the difference between life and death for the sailors aboard. Speeds on the ocean feel different than ones on land. Gerald R. Ford-class carriers can travel at roughly 30 knots (34.5 mph), which might not seem fast if you drive faster than 60 mph in your car. But when you take into account that they're 100,000-ton vessels that have to rip through choppy waves to reach those speeds, it should put things in perspective. So when vessels can go faster than 30 knots, they're worth noting. Other naval vessels have exceeded the speeds of the following ones, but for this story we were looking for vessels still serving in the military one way or another. Even if that means it's exclusively used for training, we wanted to include it. But vessels that aren't still used had to be left out. For instance, because every Cold War-era A-90 Orlyonok Ekranolplan , which exceeded 216 knots for the Soviet Union, was retired by 1993, it didn't fit what we were looking for. Instead, here are some of the fastest naval ships still in operation somewhere in the world. The Turkish Navy isn't one the public hears too much about, but it owns some of the fastest ships on the water. That would be Turkey's Kılıç I/II class of fast attack ships. The first of its kind, the Kılıç, was commissioned in 1998. It and the following two (the Kalkan and the Mizrak) comprise the Kılıç I class, while the latter six make up the Kılıç II variant. Their electronic equipment, specifically the fire control tracking system, is what separates these two variants from each other., along with the main gun's housing. When weather permits and the water conditions are ideal, the Kılıç-class can reach speeds of 40 knots (46 mph). Even when the waters are extemely turbulent, the ships are capable of more than 24 knots (27 mph). This small 552-ton vessel has four MTU-brand main engines that power four propellors with two rudders. These diesel engines are capable of producing 22,000 horsepower. Not only is the Kılıç I/II class fast, these ships have a small radar cross-section, making them harder to detect than some rival ships. Most details about the Navy SEALs — or special forces in general — are redacted for national security. That's especially true for the awesome vehicles SEAL teams use in the field. But we do know some things about the specialized watercraft they've used over the decades. In 2015, the Navy replaced the Mark V Special Operations Craft with the new Combatant Craft Assault high-speed boat, which can rapidly insert and extract SEALs behind enemy lines. Despite military secrecy, it's possible to infer some details about the CCA if we look at similar boats. For starters, it can exceed 40 knots (46 mph) and might even be able to race closer to 55 knots (63 mph). United States Marine Inc., which builds the 41-foot CCA, also makes a similar vessel that's 2 feet longer and can go over 55 knots in calm seas. The CCA uses a surface-drive system of surface-piercing propellers known for its speed. These propellers are designed to work partly out of the water, significantly reducing drag. Because of the position of the propellors, there's no blade-tip clearance from the hull, letting operators use a variety of propellor sizes. This is especially helpful for special forces, as the CCA can easily soar through the shallows. This high-speed boat isn't restricted to being launched from a dock or larger ship, either, as it's light enough for a C-17 to carry and drop it into the ocean from midair. In the early 2000s, General Dynamics devised an idea for a small, agile warship that could operate with ease near the shore, in the "littorals." Lockheed Martin was working with Marinette Marine already to build such a vessel, but the Navy accepted General Dynamics' proposal, contracting with the firm to build two warships before awarding a larger deal to either firm. Partnering with Austal USA, the result was the Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship. The Independence variant is deceptively fast with its wide stern, accommodating the largest flight deck on current surface combatant vessels, and trimaran hull design that increases its total surface area. Despite all that, it can still exceed 44 knots (50 mph). It's built with a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system that uses two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines, two MTU Friedrichshafen 20V8000 series diesel engine, and four Wärtsilä waterjets. In 2010, Navy leaders asked for Congress to approve 10 Independence-class vessels. They got their wish, and more. There have been 18 Independence ships built, with a 19th currently under construction. Alongside the construction of the Independence class, a Lockheed Martin-led team designed and built the Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship. No other vessel exudes "America" more than a class of ships named Freedom, and not simply because of its name. American culture is seeped in the mentality that everything manufactured there needs to be bigger, stronger, and faster than everywhere else. Like the Independence class, the U.S. Navy commissioned the Freedom class to combat dangers in the littorals, such as mines, diesel submarines, and other fast attack craft. When it comes to other speedy vessels, the USS Fort Worth, Detroit, or any of the other 13 Freedom-class ships won't have much of an issue closing the distance. In collaboration with Marinette Marine, Lockheed Martin's final design produced a vessel capable of 47 knots (54 mph). Again like the Independence class, the Freedom class is built with a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system, but it uses two Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines, two Colt-Pielstick 16PA6B diesel engines, and four Rolls-Royce Kamewa 153SII waterjets, two of which are maneuverable. As fast as this class is, it hasn't been without its headaches, specifically related to its propulsion system. A damaged clutch between the gas and diesel turbines caused the Milwaukee to be without any propulsion in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, requiring a tow. A year later, the same thing happened to the Fort Worth in the Pacific. The Royal Norwegian Navy has the honor of utilizing one of the fastest naval vessels to hit the open seas. If weather conditions are ideal and the water is calm, the Skjold class has been known to reach 60 knots (69 mph). The Royal Norwegian Navy commissioned the first of this class of corvette, the Skjold, in 1999 and in 2002, it ordered five more. The Skjold visited the United States for 13 months, giving the U.S. Navy a look at its design and capabilities. It returned to Norway in 2002 and then in 2003 the Navy decommissioned it in order to upgrade its propulsion system. The Norwegian Navy recommissioned it in 2008 when it was redesignated as a trials platform. The five corvettes to follow the namesake vessel (Storm, Skudd, Steil, Glimt, and Gnist) were built with a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system using four Pratt & Whitney gas turbines that drive two Kamewa water jets. Its speed is greatly assisted by its air-cushioned catamaran hull, providing less surface area to get wet, thus reducing resistance from the water it rides on. Moreover, this design makes it ideal for special operations, since it can sail through shallower water than conventional craft. It's not merely the speed that's impressive, either. The Skjold class comes with two maneuvering engines that let it zig and zag with relative ease.Nebraska Women in Agriculture conference registration opens Jan. 1
