Colombia shares higher at close of trade; COLCAP up 0.14%PARIS, Dec 24 — Beloved British animated couple Wallace and Gromit are returning to screens in their first feature-length film in 20 years for a typically mad-cap adventure that spotlights the dangers of technology in the wrong hands. Vengeance Most Fowl will air on the BBC on Christmas Day for the first time before being made available on the Netflix platform from January 3 worldwide. Inventor and director Nick Park has returned to the technology theme that he explored in his 1993 Oscar-winning hit The Wrong Trousers , but updated to take into account the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). The tale centres on tea and cheese-loving Wallace’s latest invention: an “intelligent” robotic gnome called Norbot, which helps around the house and garden, threatening to replace the ever-loyal Gromit, who takes pride in the daily tasks of life. “Wallace is completely deluded and obsessed, whereas Gromit represents the human touch,” Park told AFP in a pre-release interview. “He likes doing his gardening. It’s not about just seeing an end result, it’s the act of doing that is enjoyable. “I love the fact that we have technology. We have to just sometimes ask: is it always enhancing our lives and our relationships, or is it somehow diminishing them in some way?” ‘Real humans’ Park has shown loyalty to the idea of “doing” throughout his four-decade career and still insists on real-world modelling to create Wallace and Gromit instead of resorting to computerised imagery. At his Aardman Animations studio — makers of other hits including Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep — films are shot frame-by-frame, with clay models slowly moved and altered in a technique known as “stop motion” that dates back to the dawn of cinema. At their fastest rate, the 200-person production team for Vengeance Most Fowl produced two minutes of film per week. “Everything’s made by real human beings and that hopefully shines off the screen,” Park said. The limitations actually spur creativity, he insists, and are a core part of the franchise’s appeal. “With CGI (computer-generated imagery) I guess you are tempted to just use it to the full. You’ve got everything at your disposal,” he said. “Whereas I think if you don’t have that, you tend to be more creative with what little you’ve got.” The film sees the return of the villainous penguin Feathers McGraw from The Wrong Trousers , which won an Oscar for best short animated film. Feathers McGraw is blank-faced throughout, but his on-screen menace is always obvious — often to comical effect — while a full range of emotions are expressed, as ever, through the legendary eyebrows of Gromit. “Very small nuanced movements can say a lot,” Park said. One small change to listen out for in the new film is Wallace’s new voice after the death of English actor Peter Sallis, who had played him since his debut in 1989. Sallis has been replaced by Ben Whitehead, an English voice artist and actor who collaborated with Park on the last full-length Wallace and Gromit film, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit , released in 2005. — AFPThe Pima County Board of Supervisors on Thursday formally approved the results of the general election. The board also approved having the Pima County Elections Department take the necessary steps for a recount in the race between Sheriff Chris Nanos and Republican challenger Heather Lappin. There were 487,225 votes counted in the race to be Pima County’s top cop. Incumbent Democrat Nanos beat Lappin by 495 votes — a margin of 0.2%. State law requires a recount when the margin of victory in a race is 0.5% or less. A recount in the race between Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and his challenger Heather Lappin could take up to two weeks, county officials say. The recount could take up to 14 days because of this year’s long ballot, which covered two full pages, Constance Hargrove, the county’s elections director, told the Star. “When we program the equipment for the recount, it will exclude every other office and only count the sheriff’s race,” she said. “But because ballots are not segregated that way, we have to run them all through the tabulation equipment again.” The recount won’t start immediately, Hargrove said. The County Attorney’s Office will first petition Superior Court to approve the recount, followed by a judge issuing an order that will include a deadline for it to be completed. Still, she said, the recount could start as early as Friday. Lappin, a jail commander, had been gaining on Nanos since he started election night with a lead of over 25,000 votes when unofficial results were first released about an hour after the polls closed. By the Sunday after the election, his lead dropped to 6,456 votes. About a week into counting , Nanos’ lead over Lappin dipped below 200 votes before ending in his victory by fewer than 500 votes. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts remained in the NFL's concussion protocol on Monday, limiting his ability to practice this week for the Philadelphia Eagles and casting doubt on his availability for Sunday's game against Dallas. If Hurts can't play, the Eagles would turn to backup Kenny Pickett — who suffered a rib injury and couldn't protect a big lead in a 36-33 loss to Washington — with third-stringer Tanner McKee on deck. The Eagles (12-3) need to win one more game over the final two to clinch an NFC East title and one of the conference's top two seeds. Coach Nick Sirianni gave no additional health update on Hurts but did say the QB who led the Eagles to 10 straight wins before he was forced out with the head injury wouldn't need much time this week to get ready against the Cowboys, if he was cleared. “Jalen knows how to prepare,” Sirianni said. “He knows how to get himself ready. He's a true pro." The Eagles are 9 1/2-point favorites over the division rival Cowboys (7-8), per BetMGM Sportsbook. Sirianni said the Eagles would lean on the medical staff on a daily basis to know where Hurts — who threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first meeting against Dallas in November — was in his recovery from the head injury. Hurts was ruled out early at Washington after his head slammed against the ground on one run and he was hit in the helmet by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of another. “He's always done a good job of protecting himself both as a passer and a runner,” Sirianni said. “Any time you lose one of your best players, you wish they'd do something else or not take that hit." Hurts shook off a sluggish start over the first four games and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just five interceptions to turn the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders. “Every time there's a player out,” Sirianni said, “there's an adjustment to be made.” Saquon Barkley and the running game. Barkley was held to 41 yards after the first quarter but 150 yards is 150 yards and he still has a shot at NFL history. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,838 yards rushing and is 268 yards away from passing Eric Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984 for the season mark. Barkley is 162 yards shy of becoming the ninth player in NFL history with 2,000 yards rushing in a season. Backup QB. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards in relief, throwing a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and an interception. Pickett played his first meaningful football in a year. The Eagles use McKee as the emergency QB, but the sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft could be in the mix if Hurts sat out against Dallas. Pickett is from New Jersey and said when he was acquired from Pittsburgh that he had “great memories” of going to games at Lincoln Financial Field with his dad and grandfather since he was 5. The chance to run out of the home team tunnel — which he could get Sunday if he's the starting QB — left him absolutely delighted. Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers. “I was impressed by Pickett, honestly," Washington coach Dan Quinn said Monday. "I thought he threw the ball with good accuracy to the right spots. He’s a nice athlete (who can) move, so I can see why they would want him in that system. I thought he got outside and had good scramble ability. Wasn’t surprised they didn’t run the sneaks to go through that.” Zack Baun. The linebacker barely caused a ripple on the transactions wire in March but has been arguably the MVP of the defense. He forced a fumble in the third quarter that set up a score, one of five turnovers for the Eagles. He also had two tackles for losses. The No. 1 seed. The Eagles all but cost themselves a shot at the top spot in the NFC and a bye with the late-game collapse in Washington. The Eagles will clinch the division with a victory over the Cowboys or Giants and most likely will finish with the No. 2 seed. They are one game behind both the Detroit Lions (13-2) and the Minnesota Vikings (13-2) in the NFC standings. Eagles fans can still chant, “We're No. 1!” but it's a long shot. To clinch the No. 1 seed, the Eagles need to beat Dallas and the Giants. And the Lions need to lose their last two games against San Francisco (6-9) and Minnesota. And the Vikings needs to lose to Green Bay (10-4) and beat the Lions in Week 18. Should the status quo remain, the Eagles would host Washington in a playoff game. Beyond Hurts, edge rusher Josh Sweat left with an ankle injury and defensive tackle Jordan Davis limped off in the second quarter. ... Pickett said he had his ribs X-rayed and would undergo further testing. Sirianni had no update Monday on Pickett's condition. 1,000 — Brown became the first Eagles receiver to top 1,000 yards in three straight seasons since Mike Quick from 1983-85. The Eagles can clinch the division and a home playoff game with two lightweights left on the schedule, both at home. The Eagles play Dallas on Sunday in a game bumped to a 1 p.m. kickoff and end the season against the New York Giants. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflAMGEN ANNOUNCES 2025 FIRST QUARTER DIVIDEND

A federal judge temporarily halts the proposed supermarket merger of Kroger and Albertsons A federal judge has temporarily halted a proposed merger between supermarket giants Kroger and Albertsons, an action that could scuttle the deal. U.S. District Court Judge Adrienne Nelson issued the ruling Tuesday after holding a three-week hearing in Portland, Oregon. Kroger and Albertsons in 2022 proposed what would be the largest grocery store merger in U.S. history. But the Federal Trade Commission sued earlier this year, asking Nelson to block the $24.6 billion deal until an in-house administrative judge at the FTC could consider the merger’s implications. Former chairman of state-owned bank China Everbright Group jailed for 12 years for corruption BEIJING (AP) — Chinese official broadcaster CCTV says a former chairman of the state-owned bank China Everbright Group has been jailed 12 years for embezzlement and bribery. Tang Shuangning, who had also held senior posts at the People’s Bank of China and the China Banking Regulatory Commission, was arrested in January, part of a wider wave of prosecutions of senior officials accused of financial crimes. A court in the city of Tangshan, about 100 miles east of Beijing, found him guilty of taking advantage of his position at the state-owned bank in “seeking convenience for others” in jobs and loans, in exchange for illegal payments. The court said he had accepted illegal property with a total value of more than $1.5 million. US defense secretary in Japan to support alliance as Osprey aircraft safety causes concern TOKYO (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has met with officials in Japan to reaffirm the importance of their alliance and Washington's commitment to regional security as threats rise from China and North Korea. Austin’s visit on Tuesday also came amid growing concerns over the safety of Ospreys. The military aircraft have been grounded in the United States following a near crash at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico last month. The incident was caused by weakened metal components. It was similar to a fatal crash off southwestern Japan last year. The U.S. measure prompted the suspension of Ospreys operated by Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force. Trustee over Infowars auction asks court to approve The Onion's winning bid A trustee who oversaw the bankruptcy auction of Alex Jones’ Infowars is asking a judge to approve The Onion’s winning bid for the conspiracy-filled platform. Trustee Christopher Murray took the stand Tuesday in the second day of testimony at a hearing where a judge is scrutinizing the satirical news outlet’s winning offer. He told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston that he was there asking a court to approve the sale of Infowars’ parent company to The Onion’s parent company. It is not clear how quickly Lopez will rule. The Onion wants to turn Infowars’ website and social media accounts into parodies. Small businesses plan events, start marketing earlier to deal with shorter holiday shopping season The holiday shopping season is underway, and this year small businesses have less time to capitalize on the busy shopping period. Only 27 days separate Thanksgiving and Christmas — five fewer than last year. But there are still ways to make the most of a shorter season. One key strategy is for owners to promote deals to customers wherever they can, from social media to physical ads. The National Retail Federation predicts that retail sales will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. Online shopping is expected to grow too. Adobe Digital Insights predicts an 8.4% increase online for the full season. 10 notable books of 2024, from Sarah J. BARRY McGuigan broke down in tears over his father's death and family trauma on tonight's I'm A Celebrity: Unpacked. Former boxer Barry, 63, became visibly emotional after being shown a video of his late father Patrick performing at the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest. Under the stage name Pat McGeegan, Patrick placed fourth in the competition with the song Chance of a Lifetime. Hosts Joel Dommett, Sam Thompson , and Kemi Rodgers surprised the recently eliminated campmate with the heartfelt footage, leaving Barry deeply moved. Struggling to contain his emotions, he shared: "He died at 52, the poor fella, cancer." Joel praised Barry for his openness about grief, calling him an "inspiration". Earlier in the series, Barry had candidly shared with his fellow campmates the devastating loss of his daughter Danika , along with other family hardships. Speaking on tonight’s show, Barry reflected on the painful experiences. He said: "Losing my dad, then my brother to suicide, and then my girl... it just destroyed me. "I only had one daughter, so it’s hard to bounce back from that. My brother was 34, my dad was 52. "But losing your child... her whole career was ahead of her. She was a fantastic young actress. Her film Wildfire was winning awards all over the world, and she was just about to break through. "Then she was given five weeks to live." Barry admitted he sometimes feels judged for expressing his grief, claiming, "People say, 'Why doesn’t he stop weeping?'" But the hosts - along with newly-departed Maura Higgins and last year's winner Jill Scott - were quick to offer comfort, reminding him of the strength in sharing his story. Just today, Good Morning Britain viewers accused the show of ‘setting a trap’ for Barry as he broke down in tears over Danika live on-air. The sporting legend was initially in high spirits as he spoke to Rob Rinder and Kate Garraway from the luxurious JW Marriott Hotel in Surfers Paradise. But Barry grew emotional later in the conversation. When asked about Danika, who died from bowel cancer five years ago aged 33, he tearfully said: "It’s the single most devastating thing that’s happened to me. "Losing my daughter was dreadful. I never recovered from it. "It’s important I do chat about it. I know she’s there somewhere. "Her life was so sad, the most important time in her life when things were looking great, she got cancer and died. "In time, we learn how to deal with it. Danny had similar issues in his life." Fans were furious that the show had asked him such questions about his daughter. One wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "You set Barry up there." "Poor Barry," another chimed in. A third tweeted: "Oh Barry sending love to you and your wife and family, losing a child is the worst thing anyone can go through." i'm A Celebrity is back for its 24th series, with a batch of famous faces living in the Aussie jungle. NoneRelief, defiance, anger: Families and advocates react to Biden's death row commutationsThe record will show that tight end Trey McBride had a great season, Marvin Harrison Jr. has a promising future, the Cardinals’ defense played over its head for much of the year and Arizona was almost a good football team in 2024. Key word — almost. A frustrating stretch continued on Saturday when the Cardinals (7-9) lost 13-9 to the host Los Angeles Rams . Arizona was pushing for a go-ahead touchdown in the final minute, but Kyler Murray’s pass took an unlucky bounce off McBride’s helmet and LA’s Ahkello Witherspoon made a spectacular grab for the interception, snagging the ball just before it hit the turf. “I think we can compete with anybody, but again, that doesn’t count,” second-year coach Jonathan Gannon said. “It’s about winning and losing, you what I mean? I just got to do a better job, but I know they’re doing the right things.” The Cardinals did a lot of things right against the Rams. Despite being eliminated from the postseason, Arizona competed hard. Murray completed 33 of 48 passes for 321 yards and a touchdown — but also had two interceptions. McBride caught 12 passes for 123 yards, including his first TD catch of the year. Harrison had one of his best games with six catches for 96 yards. “I’m going to choose to be positive about it,” Murray said. “I see a light at the end of that tunnel. I think we’re a couple plays away, a couple of plays away from being a 10-win team or right where we want to be, going to the playoffs or winning the division.” The Cardinals’ defense played well for most of the game, limiting the Rams to 257 yards. But in the end, it was another loss. The Cardinals have dropped five of six after starting 6-4. “I know we’re close, man, and I know it’s hard to see that,” Gannon said. “For me, that’s hard to take on the chin but we’ll get better from it. We’ll get better.” What’s working The Murray-to-Harrison connection was much better on Saturday, producing several big plays. Gannon challenged Harrison to be more physical against opposing defensive backs last week, and the receiver responded, looking much more like the player the Cardinals expected when they selected him with the No. 4 overall pick. “I think the physicality of it, coming from college to the league, guys don’t realize how physical you can be when you get to the league,” Murray said. “He’s going to be big time.” What needs help After doing a great job of taking care of the ball over the first 11 games, Murray has thrown seven interceptions over the past five. A few of those came in late-game situations when he had to take a chance and force a pass, but it’s still not a good trend. Stock up McBride had his third 100-yard game of the season, showing sure hands and fighting through contact for extra yards. The third-year player has 1,081 yards receiving this season, becoming just the second tight end in franchise history to exceed 1,000 yards. The other was Hall of Famer Jackie Smith, who had 1,205 yards in 1967. He has 104 catches and is just the 10th tight end in NFL history to top 100 in a season. Stock down Arizona’s special teams have been very good for most of the year, but Los Angeles’ block of an extra point attempt by Chad Ryland in the third quarter proved costly. If the Cardinals had trailed by three points on the final drive instead of four, they would have had the option of kicking a tying field goal in the final minute. Injuries RB James Conner tried to battle through a knee injury against the Rams, but gained just 4 yards on the ground. His status for the season’s final game is uncertain. LB Joey Blount (ribs) and CB Elijah Jones (ankle) were inactive. Key number 822 — Harrison’s receiving yards on the season. That ranks third for a rookie in franchise history behind Anquan Boldin (1,377 in 2003) and Frank Sanders (883 in 1995). Next steps Arizona’s final game will be at home on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, who are also eliminated from the playoff race. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

AURORA, Colo. -- An apartment building that was the scene of a viral video that led former President Donald Trump to claim a Denver suburb had been taken over by a Venezuelan gang will likely close early next year, an official said Friday. The city of Aurora is seeking to close all but one building at a six-building complex where armed men were seen entering an apartment in August shortly before a fatal shooting outside, claiming the property has seen too much violent crime in addition to poor living conditions, Aurora City Attorney Pete Schulte said. While the property's owners, CBZ Management, have said they were unable to provide maintenance because a notorious Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua , took over the buildings, the city says the company essentially abandoned maintaining and running them, creating a vacuum that allowed crime to flourish. “They created an environment where the criminal element could move in and be unchecked,” said Schulte, who said gangs were responsible for some of the crime but that a lot of it was not gang-related. Schulte declined to say how much of the crime was specifically due to Tren de Aragua. He said that gang is known to “travel light and move often" and believes its members have likely moved on. Telephone messages seeking comment left for CBZ Management and its lawyer in the case were not immediately returned. During a court hearing on the criminal-nuisance action brought by the city Thursday, the owners said they agreed the buildings should be closed, Schulte said. Given that, he expects a judge to issue an order to close the buildings at the next court hearing in the case on Jan. 13. After a final decision, the city would give residents 30 days notice that they need to move, he said. During the hearing, the owners did not respond to the allegations that the property became a crime hub, Schulte said. Given that, there is potentially a chance they could ask for a trial instead, delaying any closure. Three of the six men shown in the video have since been arrested, according to Aurora police. Two of them were taken into custody in New York City under a federal arrest warrant last week. A statement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement said both were members of Tren de Aragua. According to Colorado court documents, the same rifle seen in the video was used in the fatal shooting about 10 minutes later outside the apartment complex. It was found disassembled in an oven in one of the apartments, according to an arrest warrant. One of the six buildings at the complex will not be closed because it is owned by a different branch of CBZ. It is being managed by an official appointed by the court at the request of the mortgage lender who is making improvements to the building, Schulte said.

The Democratic Party has a problem, both at the national and state levels: they have lost ground with traditionally Democrat voting blocs like Blacks and Hispanics. Big time. Susan Valdes switches registration to Republican, saying her previous party "ignore[d] the needs of [her] community" She said Speaker @Daniel_PerezFL 's vision for the coming session inspired her to want to be part of the GOP caucus... pic.twitter.com/WI6ZJPhPH3 Here's more from Florida's Voice: State Rep. Susan Valdes announced Monday she is switching her party registration from Democratic to Republican. In her statement, she pointed to new House Speaker Daniel Perez’s 'vision for the House that focuses on empowering House members to work on real problems facing our communities.' 'I have spent my adult life fighting to give a voice to the people of my West Tampa home. I have done so as a Democrat partly out of habit – I come from a family of Democrats – and partly because I believed the Democrats were the party most concerned with the working families I represent,' Valdes said. 'In the House, I have long known that no one has a monopoly on good ideas,' she said. 'I will not waste my final two years in the Florida Legislature being ignored in a caucus whose leadership expects me to ignore the needs of my community.' Welcome to the party. From Tulsi Gabbard, to mayor of Dallas and perhaps soon the mayor of NYC, there have been a great many politicians switching from Democrat to Republican often with a stop at independent in between the last several years. Politicians are seeing the Democratic Party went far left. So far Left they're pushing everyone else to the Right. I'd like some of the big podcasters reaching out to interview these flippers. I'd like to hear actual conversations and real, thoughtful reasoning as to why they switched. I think it's great that they do. But, I want to hear the thought process. That would be interesting to listen to. @JohnFetterman At this point you have entirely too much common sense to keep hanging out with the political left. He's not wrong. This is fine. Welcome to the club. Just understand many of the principles the current Democratic Party are not compatible with the populous Republican movement. It'll be interesting to see how she votes going forward. Welcome to the GOP, Rep. Valdes! Congrats to Speaker @Daniel_PerezFL on the biggest Republican majority in the history of the Florida House! https://t.co/vf1oif6cBy What a great state Florida has become under DeSantis' leadership. This is a big deal. With Rep. Valdes joining the GOP, Florida's House now has the biggest Republican majority ever. Florida has turned from a swing state to a red state under Governor @RonDeSantis ' leadership, and Speaker @Daniel_PerezFL is helping to make it even redder! 🎉 https://t.co/ASKuBh5xNq Absolutely amazing. Welcome to the Republican Party, @SusanLValdesFL ! Your decision is a testament to the shared values of freedom, opportunity, and responsibility. Looking forward to seeing the impact you'll make with your voice and leadership! https://t.co/WjxHcBOG29 There's more that unites us than divides us.

Anticipation is building in Massachusetts for a special mission Tuesday, Dec. 24, and it has nothing to do with a jolly man in a sleigh hauled by reindeer. NASA’s unmanned Parker Solar Probe will fly within 3.8 million miles of the surface of the sun, which is much closer than it sounds. "If you were to put the sun and the Earth on a football field, Parker Solar Probe will be on the 4-yard line, between the sun and the Earth," Dr. Joe Westlake, director of NASA's Science Mission Directorate's Heliophysics Division, said. At the Museum of Science, Educator Locke Patton is excited for what will be learned from the historic mission. "This is — of all things humanity has ever made — the closest to the sun we’ve ever gotten," Patton said. Despite the extreme heat, the mission is scientifically possible through cutting-edge heat shield technology. "That heat shield that sits out front was such a technological leap for us — to bring it to where the front of the heat shield is 2,500 degrees and the back of it is 85 degrees," Westlake said. As part of the Parker Probe’s multi-year mission, it is actually orbiting the sun about two dozen times. What’s significant about Tuesday's orbit is this is the closest the probe is coming so far, actually touching the sun’s corona. The probe will be flying by at 430,000 mph, which NASA said is the equivalent of traveling between Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia in just 1 second. While 430,000 mph is fast by earthly standards, it is 'slow' enough to explore the real Hub of the Universe — the massive star that gives earthlings light and heat, phenomena like the total eclipse in April, and intense solar storms that produced the northern lights as far south as Florida earlier this year. Locke Patton said the Parker Probe will be transmitting everything it experiences so NASA researchers can learn more about the forces that impact Earth. "All of that data is constantly going to come back to Earth, and we’re getting a sense of-- figuring out how solar winds are made. We’re figuring out why our magnetic field from the sun is going back and forth and switching up on us," Patton said. Westlake goes a little deeper into "solar speak," explaining, "the stream of particles that come off of the sun — that create the solar wind — is what affects...our infrastructure, GPS satellites, and other things with space radiation."Joe Rogan Claims Democrats Are 'Scrambling' To Imitate His Podcast
