President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers urge judge to toss his hush money convictionAll you have to do to become a South Dakota resident is spend one night. Stay in a campground or hotel and then stop by one of the businesses that specialize in helping people become South Dakotans, and they’ll help you do the paperwork to gain residency in a state with no income tax and relatively cheap vehicle registration. The system brings in extra government revenue through vehicle fees and offers refuge to full-time travelers who wouldn’t otherwise have a permanent address or a place to vote. And that’s the problem. State leaders are at a stalemate between those who say people who don’t really live in South Dakota shouldn’t be allowed to vote in local elections and those who say efforts to impose a longer residency requirement for voting violate the principle that everyone gets to vote. And at least one state has gotten wind that its residents might be avoiding high income taxes with easy South Dakota residency and is investigating. Easy South Dakota residency for nomads has become an enterprising opportunity for businesses such as RV parks and mail forwarders. “That’s the primary concept here, is the people that have given up their sticks and bricks and now are on wheel estate, we call it, and they’re full-time traveling,” said Dane Goetz, owner of the Spearfish-based South Dakota Residency Center, which caters to full-time travelers. “They need a place to call home, and we provide that address for them to do that, and they are just perpetually on the move.” Goetz estimated more than 30,000 people are full-time traveler residents of South Dakota, but the actual number is unclear. The state Department of Public Safety, which handles driver licensing, says it doesn't track the number of full-time traveler applications. Officials of the South Dakota Secretary of State's Office did not respond to emailed questions or a phone message seeking the state's tally of full-time travelers registered to vote. The office is not responsible for enforcing residency requirements, Division of Elections Director Rachel Soulek said. Victor Robledo, his wife and their five kids hit the road a decade ago in a 28-foot (8.5-meter) motorhome to seek adventure and ease their high cost of living in Southern California. They found South Dakota to be an opportunity to save money, receive mail and “take a residency in a state that really nurtures us,” he said. They filed for residency in 2020. “It was as simple as coming into the state, staying one night in one of the campgrounds, and once we do that, we bring in a receipt to the office, fill out some paperwork, change our licenses. I mean, really, you can blow through there — gosh, 48 hours,” Robledo said. Residency becomes thorny around voting. Some opponents don’t want people who don’t physically live in South Dakota to vote in its elections. “I don’t want to deny somebody their right to vote, but to think that they can vote in a school board election or a legislative election or a county election when they’re not part of the community, I’m troubled by that,” said Democratic Rep. Linda Duba, who cited 10,000 people or roughly 40% of her Sioux Falls constituents being essentially mailbox residents. She likes to knock on doors and meet people but said she is unable to do “relationship politics” with travelers. The law the Republican-controlled Legislature passed in 2023 added requirements for voter registration, including 30 days of residency — which don't have to be consecutive — and having “an actual fixed permanent dwelling, establishment, or any other abode to which the person returns after a period of absence.” The bill's prime sponsor, Republican Sen. Randy Deibert, told a Senate panel that citizens expressed concerns about “people coming to the state, being a resident overnight and voting (by) absentee ballot or another way the next day and then leaving the state.” Those registered to vote before the new law took effect remain registered, but some who tried to register since its passage had trouble. Dozens of people recently denied voter registration contacted the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota, according to the chapter’s advocacy manager, Samantha Chapman. Durational residency requirements for voting are, in general, unconstitutional because such restrictions interfere with the interstate right to travel, said David Schultz, a Hamline University professor of political science and a professor of law at the University of St. Thomas. “It’s kind of this parochialism, this idea of saying that only people who are really in our neighborhood, who really live in our city have a sufficient stake in it, and the courts have generally been unsympathetic to those types of arguments because, more often than not, they’re used for discriminatory purposes,” he said. Earlier this year, the Legislature considered a bill to roll back the 2023 law. It passed the Senate but stalled in the House. During a House hearing on that bill, Republican Rep. Jon Hansen asked one full-time traveler when he was last in South Dakota and when he intends to return. The man said he was in the state a year earlier but planned to return in coming months. Another man who moved from Iowa to work overseas said he had not lived “for any period of time, physically” in South Dakota. “I don’t think we should allow people who have never lived in this state to vote in our state,” Hansen said. Republican Sen. David Wheeler, an attorney in Huron, said he expects litigation would be what forces a change. It's unlikely a change to the 30-day requirement would pass the Legislature now, he said. “It is a complicated topic that involves federal and state law and federal and state voting rights, and it is difficult to bring everybody together on how to appropriately address that,” Wheeler said. More than 1,600 miles (2,500 kilometers) east, Connecticut State Comptroller Sean Scanlon has asked prosecutors to look into whether some state employees who live in Connecticut may have skirted their tax obligations by claiming to be residents of South Dakota. Connecticut has a graduated income tax rate of 3.0% to 6.99%. Connecticut cities and towns also impose a property tax on vehicles. South Dakota has none. Scanlon and his office, which administers state employee retiree benefits, learned from a Hartford Courant columnist in September that some state retirees might be using South Dakota’s mail-forwarding services for nefarious reasons. Asked if there are concerns about other Connecticut taxpayers who are not state retirees possibly misusing South Dakota’s lenient residency laws, the Department of Revenue Services would only say the agency is “aware of the situation and we’re working with our partners to resolve it.” A South Dakota legislative panel broached the residency issue as recently as August, a meeting in which one lawmaker called the topic “the Gordian knot of politics.” “It seems like it’s almost impossible to come to some clear and definitive statement as to what constitutes a residency with such a mobile population with people with multiple homes and addresses and political boundaries that are easy to see on a map but there’s so much cross-transportation across them,” Republican Sen. Jim Bolin said. Dura reported from Bismarck, North Dakota. Associated Press Writer Susan Haigh in Hartford, Connecticut, contributed to this report.

E Ink tablets are great for those who like to jot, scribble or doodle, and don't want to waste reams of paper. But even modern e-notes can be more sustainable. Supernote's 10-inch Manta model is modular, and can be upgraded or repaired as needed. The A5X2 Manta is the latest evolution of Supernote's E Ink devices, which appear to have started with the Linux-based A5 in 2018 – though the company is a good deal older than that, having began as a developer of point-of-sale card terminals and payment systems about 15 years ago. Like the 7.8-inch Nomad before it, the Manta embodies the company's commitment to reducing electronic waste by allowing users to upgrade components. The back can be popped off (using a fingernail or pry tool) to allow access to the internals. From there, the motherboard and battery can be replaced with fresh ones if needed, and storage expanded. Supernote also offers free (subscription-free) software updates. The Manta sports a 10.7-inch E Ink display at 1,920 x 2,560 pixels. However, this is not color E Ink like are sporting, but is reported to be with 16 levels of gray. It's topped by a contoured soft film for a more natural paper-like writing experience. And like the e-note, Supernote's new model doesn't feature a front light – so you'll need to limit your scribbling to natural daylight or well-lit rooms. Aiming to "to create a device that users love to hold and move with as their hearts desire," Supernote managed to slim down the edges to just 3.6 mm (0.14 in) while also making the e-note a relatively easy carry at 375 g (13.2 oz). There's a USB-C port on one of the upper edge's two bumps, which are inspired by the cephalic fins of a Manta Ray (the other is home to the power button). To the right is a nifty elastic pen loop that hosts a pen input, and this can also be replaced if damaged. Touch-enabled side bars make for easy page scrolling. Placing two fingers on the display allows a user to draw a line around an object, which is erased when the fingers are removed. There's also a gesture-based undo/redo function. The e-note runs a special flavor of Android 11 called Chauvet, which is designed for "those who write" and supports numerous file formats, including ePub, PDF and Word docs. The device also supports handwriting-to-text conversion. The stock motherboard features a quad-core Rockchip processor supported by 4 GB of RAM and a somewhat paltry 32 GB of internal storage – though there is support for up to 2 TB of microSD card expansion. Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi are included, and the device can sync to cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Outlook Calendar and more. The Manta itself is priced at US$459, but you'll need to shell out an extra $59 for a standard pen input (with durable ceramic nib) if you don't already have one. A half folio will add another $59 to the pot. The device launched earlier this month, but stocks sold out quickly so it's currently shown as up for pre-order while the company catches up with orders. The US reboot of Laid is a vivacious farce with a few new kinksDALLAS — Currently, in the state of Texas, survivors of child sexual abuse have 30 years from their 18th birthday to sue their perpetrators in civil court. State Representative Ann Johnson, D-Houston, wants to eliminate that restrictive timeline and bring it in line with the criminal side, where there is no statute of limitations. Rep. Johnson said it seemed like an easy fix, but it’s been anything but. And she hopes H.B. 179 will at least get a hearing during the 89th legislative session that starts in January. “This is now the third session in a row where we have offered this legislation. And I hope, for the first time, that we will get a hearing so that other Texans can hear from the victims who have suffered abuse at the hands of individuals, oftentimes that were being shielded by organizations or institutions that have avoided civil responsibility,” the Democrat told us on Inside Texas Politics. Rep. Johnson was the chief prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney’s Human Trafficking Section. Now in private practice, she works as an attorney for victims of sexual exploitation, often helping people who cannot afford a lawyer. Since her legislation has never received a hearing, the Democrat said the public, and lawmakers, deserve to learn who is actively campaigning against it behind the scenes. When discussing her legislation, Johnson specifically mentioned Cindy Clemishire, a north Texas woman who accused Gateway Church senior pastor Robert Morris of first molesting her when she was only 12 years old. Morris, the megachurch's founder, resigned within days of the accusation going public. Johnson also highlighted the sex abuse scandals at Irving-based Boy Scouts of America and the Southern Baptist Convention as examples of organizations protecting sexual predators. She argues that opening up the civil courthouse doors will allow the public to learn more about such organizations. “If you opened up the hearing room, if you opened up the courthouse doors and you heard from these victims, then every Texan would learn about what’s a good organization and what’s not. Who’s protecting kids and who’s not,” said the lawmaker. “I do not understand why the state of Texas continues to shield sexual predators and the organizations that have protected them.”

Lions head into NFC title game rematch vs. 49ers seeking top seed more than revengeSANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Dan Campbell stood at the podium after Detroit blew a 17-point lead to San Francisco in last season's NFC title game and talked about how that might have been the Lions' only shot at reaching the Super Bowl. The coach knew how difficult it would be to maintain that high level of play through injuries, attrition and with a target on their back as a top contender in the NFC. Eleven months later as Campbell and the Lions prepare to return to Levi's Stadium for the first time since that loss , that has proved to be prophetic — for San Francisco instead of Detroit. The Lions (13-2) head into the rematch Monday night with the inside track at the top seed in the NFC playoffs, while the 49ers (6-9) have already been eliminated from postseason contention . The element of revenge for last season's 34-31 loss is secondary for Detroit, considering what's on the line the last two weeks of the season. The Lions can clinch the top seed in the NFC by winning their final two games or with a win against the Niners if Minnesota loses to Green Bay on Sunday. “Anytime we lose, the thought of losing is going to motivate you to not want to lose again, particularly with where you were at,” Campbell said. “So, that’s always going to bring its own level of motivation to it. But this is where we’re at in the season, we know that we need another win, we understand where we’re at in the division and the NFC, so I think it’s all encompassing.” While the Lions have no need to search for motivation, that's not the case for the 49ers, who are playing out the string of a lost season after making losing back-to-back NFC title games in 2021-22 and the Super Bowl last season. A run of injuries to key players like Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa and Brandon Aiyuk, combined with inconsistent play all season have led to the 49ers having nothing to play for in the final two games. “It’s obviously not where you want to be this time of year,” Bosa said. "It’s different, especially watching where we’re at last year against this team. Just that feeling of December, January football is a feeling that I’ve gotten used to being really competitive and being in the mix. I think we’re doing a good job of staying engaged and obviously this is our job, so we’re going to finish it strong. Detroit’s faith in Jameson Williams is paying off, taking advantage of his game-breaking abilities with big plays. Jared Goff heaved an 82-yard touchdown pass over Williams’ shoulders and into his hands in last week’s win at Chicago. Earlier this season, Goff threw 70-, 64- and 52-yard passes for scores to the third-year receiver. “We work on it a ton, him and I do, and it’s a testament to him,” Goff said. “He’s asking for it. He wants that work, and I’m more than happy to give it to him during the week. It’s good. Our connection continues to grow. He’s obviously one of the best deep threats in our league, even when it’s not perfect.” The 49ers head into the game scrambling to put together an offensive line. Williams has been out for more than a month with an ankle injury and his backup at left tackle, Jaylon Moore, is now sidelined by a quadriceps injury. Left guard Aaron Banks injured his knee last week, while his backup Ben Bartch is already out with an ankle injury. That will leave the Niners with two third-stringers protecting Brock Purdy. But Shanahan said he isn’t thinking of sitting Purdy to protect him. “People deal with that throughout the year on other weeks, too,” he said. “I mean, we’ve got a football team. We’ve got to go out and we’ve got two games here and we’ve got to see what guys we can put out there and whatever we do we’re going to put a game plan together to, as best as we can to give us a chance to win.” Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who may have a chance for the second straight offseason to be an NFL head coach, routinely pulls off trick plays and his latest was a doozy. Goff intentionally stumbled after taking a snap and Jahmyr Gibbs went to the ground as their teammates yelled, “fumble,” to fool the Bears on a 21-yard touchdown pass to Sam LaPorta. “Those make you feel good because everybody is invested in it,” Campbell said. “It’s fun. It’s different. It’s sound. “I know it sounds crazy, but it’s sound.” San Francisco kicker Jake Moody is having a rough second season after being drafted in the third round a year ago. Moody has missed seven field goals this season, including a 41-yarder last week at Miami. Moody is just 10 for 16 since coming back from a high ankle sprain in his kicking foot, but Shanahan said he still has confidence in him. “I still feel the same about him, that I believe he’ll be our guy,” Shanahan said. "I mean everyone’s got to perform and do things like that. I think he has had a tough year. Before his high ankle sprain, he missed one. ... I think he was 12 of 13 before that, so I thought he was doing really well." AP Sports Writer Larry Lage contributed to this report. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Cowboys win wild one vs. Commanders to halt five-game slideHyderabad (Telangana) [India], December 24 (ANI): Film producer and Chairman of the Telangana Film Development Corporation, Dil Raju, has shared that Sri Tej, the victim of the Sandhya Theatre tragedy and the son of Revathi, who lost her life in the incident, is responding well to treatment and has been taken off the ventilator two days ago. Dil Raju visited KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, to meet Sri Tej's family. Speaking to ANI, he revealed that he had earlier met Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to discuss providing support to Sri Tej's family, ensuring that both the film industry and government would extend all necessary assistance. Earlier, the producers of Pushpa 2, Naveen Yerneni and Ravi Shankar, handed over a Rs 50 lakh cheque to the victim's family at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad, in the presence of Telangana Minister for Roads & Buildings and Cinematography, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. The cheque was received by Revathi's husband, the father of Sri Tej, who is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. The tragic incident occurred on December 4, when Allu Arjun attended the premiere of Pushpa 2: The Rule. A large crowd gathered to see him, and the situation escalated when he waved to fans from the sunroof of his car. Revathi lost her life, and her son, Sri Tej, was injured. Following the incident, Allu Arjun was arrested and later released on bail after posting a Rs 50,000 bond. The case took another turn when the Pushpa actor was served a notice to appear for questioning in connection with the Sandhya Theatre tragedy. "The case is under investigation, and your presence is essential before the undersigned officer to elicit answers about the incident and, if necessary, to visit the scene of the offence to ascertain the true facts," read the notice issued by the Telangana Police. Actor Allu Arjun has since returned to his residence after appearing at the Chikkadpally police station in Hyderabad in connection with the incident. On December 22, a group of protestors demanding justice for Revathi attacked Allu Arjun's residence. According to DCP West Zone, Hyderabad, the group arrived holding placards and shouting slogans. One individual climbed the compound wall and began throwing stones, prompting security to intervene. During the altercation, the protestors damaged flower pots and manhandled security personnel. Six individuals, claiming to be members of the Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU-JAC), were taken into custody and later granted bail. The incident has also sparked political controversy. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy blamed Allu Arjun for the tragedy, stating in the Assembly that police had denied permission for any event at Sandhya Theatre due to safety concerns. The actor, however, dismissed the allegations, calling them an attempt at "character assassination." Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba having breakout sophomore seasonAs a kid, I loved to read. My parents subscribed to Newsweek, I was addicted to TV Guide, and when I made a little spending money, I got a subscription to the Sporting News. But the magazine that shaped me the most was MAD. The satirical monthly made fun of political leaders and parodied the top TV shows and movies. That irreverent style influenced my sense of humor, and my family has had to live with that ever since. One of my favorite MAD features was “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions.” Basically, the writers said in print what most of us wanted to say out loud. For example, one cartoon showed a woman looking up at a drip from the ceiling, asking a plumber, “Is that from a leaking pipe?” The plumber, with a deadpan expression, replied, “No, somebody upstairs is watering their lawn.” Another showed a wrecked car wrapped around a tree. An onlooker asked, “Have an accident?” The driver replied, “No thanks! Already had one.” You may not be laughing now, but when I was 10, I was rolling on the floor. Of course, people are still asking stupid questions today. My wife, the dear angel, leads a church ministry that provides snacks for elementary students. Every week she fills a shopping cart with juice boxes, chips, crackers and fruit. She cannot make it to the checkout counter without bystanders offering their unsolicited commentary and questions. She accepts it all with a smile, but I know what she’s thinking deep down inside. “Well, someone’s throwing a big party tonight!” (“Why, yes we are! It’s at the county jail. I’m surprised you’re not on the guest list.”) And, “Do you think you have enough snacks in that buggy?” (“You know, it's hard to tell. Could you help me get this stuff in my van, and then meet me at the school to unload? Only then will we know for sure.”) Oh, the things we’d like to say, but in polite society, we just can’t. Wait, who am I kidding? Manners are no longer in fashion. So the next time I’m on the receiving end of a stupid question, I’ll be ready with my snappy comeback. For instance, when the tech repair guy on the phone asks me “So your computer won’t even power up?” I answer in the affirmative. He says, “Have you gone to our website for the step-by-step instructions?” From now on I will reply “What a great idea. Oh wait: My computer is still dead!” Those of us who have suffered an injury get some real doozies. While I'm hobbling along on a cane, someone will blurt out “Have you gone to see a doctor?” I'll reply, “A doctor? Why would I go to a doctor? I'm actually looking for a top hat so I can take dance lessons.” Just wait until you are on crutches. An old friend will look you up and down, and ask “So, do you have to use crutches?” I'll wait a second for the question to sink in and reply, “Are you kidding me? No, I don't have to use crutches. I just do this to get attention, and obviously my plan is working.” Meanwhile, back at the grocery store, I want to purchase a butternut squash. The teen cashier is puzzled. He holds it up, shakes it, and turns it upside down. He yells to one of his co-workers. “Brittany! What is this?” Brittany shrugs her shoulders. I say “It’s a butternut squash.” He says “Nope, that ain't no squash. It looks like some kinda pumpkin.” I reply, “No, this is not in the pumpkin family.” “Wait, they have a family?” he asks. Eventually the mystery is solved, and he studies the next mystery item. “It’s a pomegranate,” I say. “Hang on,” he says. “I'm gonna find a manager.” Finally he rings up my last item. He then asks the question I've been waiting for all of my life. “Is this everything you need?” I said, “Oh believe me, I need so much more. Let's start with affordable healthcare.” He just stared at me. I should buy him a MAD magazine. Minnesota Vikings Sign 25-Year-Old Cornerback to Practice Squad

It was quite the celebration Saturday at Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem after Lehigh beat rival Lafayette 38-14 in the 160th edition of college football’s most-played rivalry. The win completed a remarkable turnaround for Lehigh, which finished the season 8-3 to capture the Patriot League championship, just one season after going 2-9. So it was no surprise that students and fans would want to mark the occasion the way students and fans tend to when the football team vanquishes its chief rival: storming the field and tearing down the goalposts. It took some time and effort, but the sea of fans was eventually able to get one of the goalposts to the ground. If the best time to strengthen is from a position of strength, then Vitor Pereira has helped put Wolverhampton Wanderers in the right spot. Certainly compared with the bedraggled outfit he inherited three games ago, Wolves’ new head coach has inspired a new-found fight and togetherness that has put the club in a much better position than they could have dreamed they would be in heading into 2025. Advertisement A battling point in north London, featuring a dramatic late equaliser — and a final flourish that gave Tottenham Hotspur a serious scare about losing — completed a fine start to his time in charge. But if he and the club needed any reminders of the issues that must be addressed when the January transfer window opens, they got it during an eventful afternoon. When Pereira arrived at Molineux in the wake of Gary O’Neil’s sacking, he took on a squad in need of at least one central defender. Ten days and three games later, despite clean sheets against Leicester City and Manchester United , nothing has changed in terms of what the squad needs. The game against Tottenham underlined this, despite the fixture ending on a huge high for Pereira and his players. With Toti ruled out through injury, Pereira started the game with a three-man central defence featuring just two fit central defenders. Matt Doherty has acquitted himself superbly since moving into the back three but remains a makeshift option. By the end, with Craig Dawson withdrawn as part of Wolves’ desperate chase for an equaliser, Pereira had a back three comprising two players — Doherty and Nelson Semedo — who perform best as wing-backs and a defender in Santiago Bueno who has yet to fully prove his Premier League credentials. In Pereira’s short reign, the first half at Spurs was the weakest 45 minutes so far. The deficiencies at the heart of defence were exposed on a number of occasions, most notably with the concession of another soft goal from a corner. Ten of the 42 goals Wolves have conceded this season have come from corners — the highest figure in the Premier League, one clear of Manchester United and Southampton and five more than anyone else. The 22 goals conceded overall from set pieces, including five from non-direct free kicks, one from a throw-in and five more from penalties, is comfortably worse than Southampton (nine) and Manchester United (10). While defending set pieces takes more than commanding central defenders, they certainly help. As if to underline the point, the data from Opta also shows the 10 headed goals conceded by Wolves is the worst in the league, two ahead of United and Leicester and at least four worse than everyone else. Just a few minutes after Rodrigo Bentancur had nipped away from all of Wolves’ defenders to plant home a free header and cancel out Hwang Hee-chan’s opener, Radu Dragusin was given an equally free ride at another corner and gave Wolves a reprieve by heading just wide. Advertisement Both statistically and with the naked eye, the issue is clear and Pereira reiterated in his post-match press conference that he wants a centre-back next month, especially with Toti’s hamstring injury ruling him out for three to four weeks. “With time, we can have more solutions because we have two young players, two young centre-backs on the bench,” he told his post-match press conference, referring to Bastien Ndemeni, 18, signed in the summer from Nantes, and Alfie Pond , 20, who was on loan at Stockport in League Two last season. While Pereira said he is happy to use full-backs in the outer positions in his back three, he stressed that Wolves are still looking to add an experienced central defender to their ranks. “We are a bit (short of options). It’s a position that we need to bring someone in with some expertise.” There are plenty of positives, though, with Wolves two points clear of the bottom three ahead of what looks like a testing run of fixtures early in the new year. While the display at Spurs was tactically and technically the weakest of the three under Pereira, a team that looked mentally shot in the final weeks of the O’Neil era discovered levels of spirit and resilience rarely seen this season to rescue a point through Jorgen Strand Larsen ’s seventh goal of his debut Premier League season. “I think it’s a good result for us,” said Pereira. “It was a difficult week because we lost Toti before the game, we lost (Matheus) Cunha at half-time, and this is not a big squad. “We knew we must find solutions and the spirit that I saw in the second half (pleased me). “The team tries to play more with the ball, the team tries to create situations to score, and because of this spirit, the personality, I’m very happy and I’m proud of the work.” In less than a fortnight, the mood around Wolves has changed beyond belief thanks to a new voice in the dugout and an injection of simplicity into a team that had begun to look muddled. But the issues that put them in trouble have not gone away. If they want to climb away from it, those issues still need addressing. LONDON — Apple and Google aren’t giving consumers a genuine choice of mobile web browsers, a British watchdog said Friday in a report that recommends they face an investigation under new UK digital rules taking effect next year. The Competition and Markets Authority took aim at Apple, saying the iPhone maker’s tactics hold back innovation by stopping rivals from giving users new features like faster webpage loading. Apple does this by restricting progressive web apps, which don’t need to be downloaded from an app store and aren’t subject to app store commissions, the report said. “This technology is not able to fully take off on iOS devices,” the watchdog said in a provisional report on its investigation into mobile browsers that it opened after an initial study concluded that Apple and Google effectively have a chokehold on “mobile ecosystems.” The CMA’s report also found that Apple and Google manipulate the choices given to mobile phone users to make their own browsers “the clearest or easiest option.” And it said that the a revenue-sharing deal between the two US Big Tech companies “significantly reduces their financial incentives” to compete in mobile browsers on Apple’s iOS operating system for iPhones. Both companies said they will “engage constructively” with the CMA. Apple said it disagreed with the findings and said it was concerned that the recommendations would undermine user privacy and security. Google said the openness of its Android mobile operating system “has helped to expand choice, reduce prices and democratize access to smartphones and apps” and that it’s “committed to open platforms that empower consumers.” It’s the latest move by regulators on both sides of the Atlantic to crack down on the dominance of Big Tech companies. US federal prosecutors this week unveiled their proposals to force Google to sell off its Chrome browser as they target its monopoly in online search. The CMA’s final report is due by March. The watchdog indicated it would recommend using the UK’s new digital competition rulebook set to take effect next year, which includes new powers to rein in tech companies, to prioritize further investigation into Apple’s and Google’s “activities in mobile ecosystems.”Mahesh Sawant MUMBAI: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray's son Amit, only the second Thackeray to contest an election after his MLA cousin Aaditya, lost the Mahim assembly seat by over 17,000 votes in his electoral debut. Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Mahesh Sawant won the Mahim constituency by raking in 50,213 votes. Incumbent Shiv Sena MLA Sada Sarvankar received 48,897 votes and Amit came third with 33,062 votes. Celebrations erupted for Sawant at Shivaji Park, the heart of the undivided Shiv Sena and home to Sena Bhavan - now Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT)'s headquarters. A short distance away, at the party head office, Sena (UBT) leaders were facing uncertainty about the future. Defending the impact of the results on the Thackeray family's political legacy, incumbent South Central MP Anil Desai told TOI, "There were multiple factors deciding this election statewide. This includes the drawback of our alliance partners and Ladki Bahin scheme. Sawant was facing two strong opponents in Mahim assembly constituency and won." Speaking about neighbouring Worli where Aaditya Thackeray won with a low margin, he said, "Aaditya was a star campaigner who had to take care of not only his campaign but also that of other candidates, which impacted the results there." MNS workers were taken aback that their party chief's son lost to a new entrant in the state polls. BJP, which had initially backed Amit, later put all the weight behind Sarvankar when he refused to back down. MNS leader Yashwant Killedar, who was closely involved in Amit's campaigns, said, "This defeat is the result of Muslim votes for Sena (UBT) and freebies by Sarvankar before elections and the Ladki Bahin scheme. We also suspect EVM tampering. On our part, we reached the doorsteps of our voters." When asked what the loss means for Amit's political future, Killedar said, "This is not the end. He remains a popular leader. As a party, we will decide the further course of action." Sanjay Bhagat, Sena (UBT)'s Mahim shakha pramukh, said, "What worked for Sawant was his common man image. The son of a mill worker fought against the son of a party chief. About Sarvankar, people had long-standing issues around redevelopment that were unresolved, and Sawant had strong local connections in the assembly for voters to trust him to resolve them." The next challenge, Bhagat said, now for those like him is to hold the party together at the shakha levels as chances of cadres shifting pose a significant threat moving forward.

MCG set a new record with over 350,000 fans attending the 2024 Boxing Day Test between India and Australia. Indian fans dominated, creating a vibrant atmosphere. IND vs AUS: The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) witnessed an unprecedented gathering of over 350,000 cricket fans for the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Cricket Australia confirmed on day five of the thrilling contest. This aggregate attendance shattered the 87-year-old record for the most fans attending a single Test match in the country. Historic Milestone The previous record was held by the MCG itself, with 350,534 fans attending the iconic Ashes Test in January 1937 over six days. The match, centered around Sir Donald Bradman’s legendary exploits, was a landmark moment in Australian cricket history. However, the 2024 Boxing Day Test, spanning just five days, has now surpassed that figure, reflecting the enduring allure of the traditional fixture. Indian Fans Paint the MCG in Blue A significant proportion of the crowd comprised Indian fans, adding a vibrant and electrifying atmosphere to the MCG. Nitish Kumar Reddy’s century was met with deafening cheers, making it feel like a home game for the Indian team. The stadium was packed with over 80,000 spectators on each of the first three days, culminating in a total of 87,000 fans on Boxing Day alone. Although day four saw a dip in attendance to around 40,000, Cricket Australia noted a remarkable surge on day five, with more than 50,000 fans entering the gates during the first session alone. To ensure the match remained accessible, Cricket Australia offered day five tickets at just AUD 10 (roughly INR 530), with free entry for children under 15. This initiative helped drive a projected turnout of over 70,000 fans on the final day, boosting the total attendance beyond the historic 350,000 mark. A Record-Breaking Contest While this match now ranks as the second-highest attended in cricket history, it falls short of the staggering 465,000 fans who attended the India vs Pakistan Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in 1999. Nonetheless, the MCG’s feat underscores its status as a premier cricket venue, particularly during the festive Boxing Day Test. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy Delivers Drama As fans eagerly awaited a decisive fifth day, the MCG once again proved to be a theater of dreams, hosting a gripping contest that lived up to its billing. This remarkable turnout highlights the unifying power of cricket and the enduring passion of fans for the longest format of the game. With such overwhelming support from fans, the Boxing Day Test has reaffirmed its status as one of the marquee events on the cricketing calendar. Dylan Hernández: MLS deal with Apple TV could be hurting league's efforts to grow its fan baseDance music can often really complex — with all the styles of music that fall under the umbrella term and the countless sounds, artists, fans, parties, opinions and cities that make up the global culture and community we usually just refer to as “the scene.” It’s also quite simple, when one considers that what’s ultimately fueling this world is the deeply primal, very human desire to get together and dance. In 2024, returning master Jamie xx distilled this point on his comeback album In Waves , with call to arms lyrics that encouraged that “All you children gather round, we will dance and we will whirl. All you children gather round, we will dance — together.” Whether that sense of togetherness was one you felt when pushed up against the rail while seeing your favorite artist alongside your best friends and the news pals you just met in the pit, or the old acquaintances you were delighted to run into on the dancefloor, or just that most special relationship between a person and their headphones, in 2024 dance music brilliantly accomplished what it has a special capacity to do — make us feel connected. This is not a small thing in an increasingly online and isolated world. While we were all out there going for it, or just at home enjoying living room listening, there were a select few tracks that raised spirits a bit higher, made heads bob a touch harder, got the blood pumping faster and generally just defined the year in dance music. These are the 50 best dance tracks of 2024, presented alphabetically by artist. A.G. Cook is one of the producers on Charli XCX’s Brat, and pop’s top club girl returns the favor on the title track to his expansive, three-disc 2024 album. Charli sings three words (yes, two of them are “brit” and “pop”) here, with Cook clipping and looping them over skittery synths that ping-pong around like agitated atoms under a flame. Buoyant, crisp and energetic, “Britpop” is a bright invitation to dancefloor liberation from one of the most influential dance producers of the last decade. — JOE LYNCH Keinemusik had a crossover moment in 2022 when two of its members, &Me and Rampa, produced a track on Drake’s dance album, Honestly, Nevermind . The German collective’s third member, Adam Port, followed them this year with his buzzing single, “Move” with Pakistani American producer Stryv and vocalist Malachiii. Clips of Port rinsing it in his DJ sets to ecstatic fanfare flooded social media months before its June release, and interest didn’t stall afterwards, either. To date, it’s collected over 420 million streams on Spotify and YouTube combined and has spent, as of publishing date, 26 weeks on the Afrobeats Songs chart, where it peaked at No. 1. And to make a big hit even bigger, pop star Camila Cabello later hopped on the October remix. — KRYSTAL RODRIGUEZ Released in May, the collaborative track from Aussie favorite Anna Lunoe and U.K. wizard Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs finds both artists flexing their considerable powers, with the pair together creating a house production at once tough and lush. The song, which arrived 10 years after the duo’s first collaboration, builds then breaks into a euphoric chorus made of a looped vocal sample, with this bright heater setting the tone for the album from which it came — the first studio LP of Lunoe’s long career, released this past October. — KATIE BAIN The Dutch duo Anotr show their grasp of steamy disco-pop on “How You Feel,” with its searingly bright guitar, lithe, live-sounding bass line, and coquettish couplets: “If that’s how you feel, bring that body close to me/ Time to make it real, can’t keep this a fantasy.” It’s a slick update of the formula that buoyed golden oldies like Cerrone’s “Give Me Love” and Gino Soccio’s “Hold Tight,” floor-fillers that never forgot the importance of flirtation. — ELIAS LEIGHT After years of public scrutiny, Grande started 2024 with a clear message to her haters: she hears them, and she’s not listening. “Yes, And?” kicked off her (literal) blockbuster year with the self-assured, house-forward anthem, which called listeners to leave their cares behind and free their spirits on the dancefloor. The refreshing release kicked off her Eternal Sunshine era, earned the multi-hyphenate her sixth Hot 100 No. 1 debut and even attracted a rare remix feature from Mariah Carey . — MEGHAN MAHAR All the fat and extraneous detail has been cut away from “Chroma 002 L.A.V.A.”, Bicep and Benjamin Damage’s most effective collaboration, released in March. What’s left is cadaverously lean and relentlessly mean: Three words repeat over and over as a breathless beat and wriggling bass rush forward at a breakneck pace. It’s exhilaratingly simple, a testament to the power of brute force and blistering speed. — E. L. There’s no greater energy than the anticipation and potential you feel while driving around aimlessly with your friends on a Friday night. Anything is possible and adventure — or at least a couple of laughs is around the corner. Barry Can’t Swim’s “Still Riding” captures that spirit with a sample of Kali Uchis ‘ “Ridin Round,” matched with an upbeat house groove and swaying synths just off-kilter enough to feel a little bit dangerous. The driving layers unfold like the lights of the city coming to life, daring you to see what’s just around the corner, with the September track altogether serving as an exclamation point on the Scottish producer’s breakout year. — KAT BEIN Few producers can fuse dance music and pastoral flute, and Bonobo is one of these select few. “Expander” was the producer’s only new release of 2024, and it’s a statement. On it, the England-born, Los Angeles-based low-key icon weaves said flute and a folksy female vocal sample with increasingly thick and crispy electronic production, until the whole thing indeed expands into the kind of cerebral but blood-pumping IDM that’s long been the Bonobo signature. — K. Bain Few artists fuse dance with R&B and jazz so effectively (and seemingly effortlessly) as Cakes da Killa. The New York artist again demonstrated that ability on his third studio album Black Sheep (out on Tokimonsta’s Young Art Records) and its positively simmering February single “Do Dat Baby.” A collaboration with the reliably excellent Dawn Richard, the track balances smooth production with Cakes’ elastic and unmistakable flow, where here celebrates his sex appeal while talking about “pics on the gram, got these boys try to ravage.” — K. Bain After scoring a U.K. No. 1 hit last year with “Miracle,” Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding reunited once again for its sequel, “Free,” a vibrant anthem that brings the magic of their ongoing collaborations to new heights. Another revisit of the ‘00s club sounds that remained very en vogue this year, this time they venture into euphoric piano house with cascading breaks and glowing synths. It’s a perfect storm of energy and emotion, as Goulding’s gossamer timbre soars alongside Harris’ melodies, capturing the liberating feeling of joy and loving whole-heartedly. — K.R. Between his laidback, West Coast-inspired production and cool-as-a-cucumber vocals, Channel Tres has effectively made swagger a cornerstone of his music. Somehow, he takes it up a notch on the retro-funky “Cactus Water.” The Compton-repping artist channels (no pun intended) the sexually charged energy of Rick James as he describes an intimate connection that’s metaphorically (and perhaps also literally) psychedelic — and of which he’s thirsty for more. The second single from his debut album Head Rush , “Cactus Water” bridges Channel’s previous work and his more sonically exploratory full-length . — K.R. When Charli sings “it’s okay to just admit that you’re jealous of me” at the top of “Von Dutch,” she doesn’t even come across as braggadocious: she knows how good Brat’ s lead single is, and she’s merely stating facts. A heady mix of modulated vocals, slurred synths and a thumping electroclash beat from producer Finn Keane, “Von Dutch” is the sound of the party rolling up to your door – and in 2024, Charli XCX was the party. — J. Lynch Released in April, the collaborative track by U.K. stars Chris Lake and Sammy Virji (with vocalist Nathan Nicholson), forecasted the season ahead with a moody track that fits its name. Lake and Virji pull off all kinds of cool moments on this one, with the track leveling up around the one minute mark with a galloping garage production and then introducing a gospel choir sample that hits like a welcome ray of sunlight on a cloudy summer day, before a track-closing chord change. “Summertime Blues” helped establish U.K. garage’s huge presence and profound influence on the scene this year. — K. Bain Diplo, Sharam from Deep Dish and Canadian rapper Pony got together for the March loosie deep house single, “Anthem.” The magic of this one lies in its restraint, with the guys keeping the ravey production to a low simmer and letting Pony’s coolly purring flow on the versus (“young wild and free, extremely handsome,” he declares of himself) do the heavy lifting, with the simply undeniable melody of the chorus elevating this one to the status designated by its own title. — K. Bain Some songs are just dripping in summer anthem glow, and Disclosure’s mighty “She’s Gone, Dance On” felt like an instant classic. Released singularly — and heralding no new album or sonic shift of greater weight — the track dropped in late May like a lightning bolt from the heavens and seemed to say, “Hey, it’s getting warm out. Why don’t you unplug from your doom-scrolling machines, go out and have a good time.” It’s basically one good sample of Ennio Morricone ‘s 1978 “Dance On” on a glorious loop — and some six months later, we’re still not ready for it to end. — K. Bein Dom Dolla, an expert purveyor of dancefloor bangers, and Swedish alt-pop queen Tove Lo linked for October’s collaborative track “Cave,” with the song marking the Aussie producer’s first foray into drum and bass. And yes, it slaps. The moody track opens with Lo’s unmistakable asking, “I got this hunger/ Are you alone?” and then 45 seconds in, a sultry, skittering D’n’B breakdown goes off and places the tune in a hazy late-night clubland, filled with darkly twinkling synths and questionable decisions. — ANA MONROY YGLESIAS Welsh DJ/producer Elkka is a sorceress at creating dreamy, euphoric queer love songs for the dancefloor, and “Your Skin,” along with much of her sonically layered 2024 debut album Prism of Pleasure , is a perfect example of this signature. Loops of sampled, distorted vocals create an indiscernible and otherworldly chorus that dances amongst layered drums, Elkka’s sultry lyrics, and a thick, resonate bassline that hits just right. — A.M.Y. After generating hype in the New York scene last year, 2024 saw the trio push the hard-launch button as Fcukers, sign to Ninja Tune’s Technicolor imprint and hit the road internationally. Discourse followed about the group’s authenticity, but there was little opposition to its hooky dance-pop and its Baggy$$ EP. That mini-set opened with “Bon Bon” and paired shades of Basement Jaxx-era big beat with vocalist Shannon Wise’s coolly spoken vocals. — THOMAS SMITH While filming The Crow in Prague in the summer of 2022, FKA twigs immersed herself in the city’s techno scene. The experience inspired her forthcoming third album, Eusexua , a probable portmanteau of “sexual” and “euphoria” she created to describe, as she says in the song’s video , “the pinnacle of human experience.” Like The Crow ’s dark fantasy of love beyond death, the LP’s title track seeks a connection that transcends realms. An oneiric blend of glitches, whirring synths and her whisper-to-wail vocals, “Eusexua” feels personal yet expansive, euphoric yet haunting. As twigs’ first solo music in three years, it reaffirms that she’s still as surprising and innovative as ever. — K.R. Earlier this year, Robert Hood described Floorplan’s music as “a soup, where the stock is house music and the seasoning is a little bit of minimal, a little bit of techno and a little bit of disco.” In practice, that often means looping throwbacks from potent vocalists — Ann Nesby’s “Lovin’ Is Really My Game” in “Tell You No Lie,” Aretha Franklin’s “Never Grow Old” in the duo’s own “Never Grow Old” — and imbuing them with enough pounding propulsion to shake walls and bust bunkers. On “What You Need,” the stabbing three-note horn line echoes Earth, Wind & Fire’s “On Your Face,” while the vocal sample evokes Franklin’s “Respect.” When the ingredients are of that quality, all Floorplan need to do is add a thunking beat and turn up the temperature. — E.L. The mysterious and often masked French producer declared his dark intentions for the year with March’s “Hard Dreams,” which found the producer in Depeche Mode mode — and previewed his third studio album Gamma , released that same month. Industrial synths and an undeniable (and very baritone) vocal performance from Yan Wagner make this one pulse with desire, with the song also among the original productions Gesaffelstein played on the road this year, his stunning live show schooling audiences from Coachella to Brooklyn Mirage on the harder, sharper edges of electronic music. — K. Bain British artist Hayla has helped create the blueprint for dance music over the last two years, with her power-lunged vocals and darkly emotive spirit featured on the 2023 Kx5 hit “Escape” and the John Summit’s 2024 smashes “Shiver” and “Where You Are.” In November, the artist released her own debut album Dusk , with the influence she had on her work with others in full effect across the ten tracks. The star across the album, and its especially stirring melodic house track “Fall Again,” is her rich and singular voice, which was easily one of the defining elements of dance music in 2024. — K. Bain Ghettotech is defined by raw expression, unfiltered lyrics and propulsive rhythms, something that Detroit trio HiTech has in spades, honoring the pioneers that defined the genre in the late ‘80s and ‘90s while bringing a fresh spin to it. “Spank!” moves recklessly with a 153bpm tempo, infectious vocals and a slick piano line — and if the track is anything to go by, the trio’s impending Honeypaqq Vol.1 project and Coachella 2025 set will be unmissable. — T.S. “I just need some exercise,” Horsegiirl states matter-of-factly in the pre-chorus to this sweat-soaked two-minute workout of a house-pop banger. Good news for the mysterious equine-masked producer and any listeners in similar want of physical exertion: Whether you’re getting it on the dancefloor or in the bedroom, “Take It Off” is the perfect soundtrack for getting in some real cardio, with its thumping bass, moaning synths and squeaking bedsprings invariably getting you in the mood for either loving or clubbing (or both). — ANDREW UNTERBERGER Prior to its July release, “I Adore You,” the collaboration between French producer Hugel, German artist Topic, Iranian-Swedish producer Arash and South African singer Daecolm, had already become a summer hit when clips of the song began circulating online. Its rhythm is smooth and sensual; combined with the serenading vocals, it transports you to the dance floor of an open-air beach club, where you’re trying to convince the person you’ve been dancing with all night that neither of you has to go home alone. The song’s reach extended further with a genre-crossing remix featuring Ellie Goulding and J Balvin that dropped in November. — K.R. For the lead single from his first album in nine years, the acclaimed producer turned to another legend, Honey Dijon – and the euphoric result is dancefloor gold. Long one of dance’s most thrilling DJs, Jamie brings the kinetic energy of his crate-digging sets to “Baddy On The Floor,” which, like 2022’s “Let’s Do It Again” (one of the handful of non-album loosies he released between 2015’s In Colour and this year’s In Waves ) takes place under the disco ball in a way some of his earlier signature tracks, much less his work with The xx, never quite did. The style suits him. — ERIC RENNER BROWN With a seemingly endless stream of releases, remixes, collaborations and sold-out shows, Summit’s career soared in 2024 — and while this packed schedule would be daunting to some, with the release of his debut album in July, the musician assured listeners that he finds “Comfort in Chaos.” The title track finds Summit at his most experimental and serves as a grand introduction to his debut, immersing listeners in a progressive production that feels large enough for Summit’s recent stages, yet delicate enough to match the vulnerably of the tracks — including the hits “Shimmer” and “Resonate” — that follow. — M.M. Of all the underground tracks to transcend club circles, Joy Orbison’s “flight fm” seems like an unexpected candidate. A nod to pirate radio stations, “flight fm” turns the dials across staticky textures and skipping U.K.-garage drums, overpowered by nose-diving bass that can both disorient a dancefloor and set it aflame. A must-play in many DJs’ sets (Four Tet, Caribou and Bicep among them), it found new life when Fred again.. reworked it in August with Playboi Carti , Future and Lil Yachty , and again when it soundtracked Chelsea FC’s video promo for their latest uniform. — K.R. Justice made their comeback back in January with a double A-side, the Tame Impala -starring “One Night/All Night” and “Generator,” a monstrous rager that’s already a staple in the French duo’s head-spinning live sets. Inspired by gabber and ‘90s hardcore techno, the latter is a welcome jolt of chaos in an otherwise pop-leaning LP, pairing unexpected piano stabs and well-earned drops. It ensured that Hyperdrama lived up to its billing. — T.S. As the first track on Hyperdrama, “Neverender” introduces the world to French electronic duo Justice’s sharpest and smoothest studio album to date. Ushering you in with glittering disco grooves and deep-space moods — on top of which sits the instantly recognizable voice of Tame Impala ’s Kevin Parker, itself is a Justice upset, given the group has traditionally steered away from marquee vocal collabs. This song wasn’t tapped as the album’s lead single (that was the other Tame Impala-assisted track, “One Night/All Night”), but with all the dramatic heft and sonic precision that has become Justice’s signature, “Neverender” was immediately welcomed by fans as a catalog classic. It also serves as the big finale in the duo’s live show, layered with other iconic catalog singles and bringing the whole “Neverender” vibe to delightful and thematic fruition. — K. Bein Kaytranada and Channel Tres are a match made in heaven. Their collaboration, released ahead of the full Kaytranada album Timeless in June , teed up a steamy summer on the dancefloor. Tres’ mesmerizing vocals melt over Kaytranada’s dark beat, brightened with reverberating horns for a hypnotic journey that you can’t help but groove to. Fans got to experience the artists’ synergy in person, as Kaytranada brought the Timeless experience to life on tour, with Tres as his special guest across all dates. — M.M. Opening the second half of LP Giobbi’s October album Dotr , “Love Come Through” makes for some of the most straightforward dancefloor fare on the album, with gentle and layered percussion and soft vocals from singer and producer Panama building to a lush climax that Giobbi dials up the emotion on with a gorgeously layered violin. This track also sets the stage for the two that follow, with the “Love Come Through,” “Succession,” “Really Good” hat trick marking some of the best and most experimental moments of the 17-track project. — K. Bain With its waterfall of blinking synth stabs, floating atmospheric background, punching beat and nostalgic lyrics, “Ripples in the Timeline” sucks you in like a raging undertow right out the gate. It’s frenetic and fast-moving, and somehow still languid, like a raver on the dance floor whose body moves to the beat while their mind is somewhere else entirely, exploring inner space. Australian producer Mall Grab was ecstatic to work with the U.K.’s Real Lies on the song, naming the group one of his “favorite bands of all time.” That passion certainly comes through here. — K. Bein With over four million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, Mau P is certainly not underground — but on “Beats for the Underground,” he recognizes the widespread appetite for a darker, tech house vibe. The highly anticipated release was first teased in 2022 and incorporated into his sets throughout 2023 – and the wait was worthwhile, as the final release is a stellar testament to the Dutch producer’s ability to mesmerize a crowd. Despite the long runway to its release, this January drop endured throughout the rest of 2024. — M.M. Brazilian wunderkid Mochakk kept his devoted global fanbase waiting after dropping the Loletta Holloway-sampling, dancefloor activating “Jealous,” but its follow up “Locomotiva Ibiza 2099” (both tracks dropped on Circoloco Records; he’s a regular at their parties) was well worth the 11-month wait. The six-and-a-half-minute heater, featuring a heavy dose of sass from techno-pop maven Vtss, takes you for a ride from the moment it begins, complete with a driving bassline, wiggly synths and thundering train sounds. Thankfully, the hot tune was part of a two-part, six-track EP, featuring three other big tunes and two remixes, a taste of the dynamism and eclecticism of Mochakk’s energetic DJ sets. — A.M.Y. Earlier this summer, British DJ and producer Mura Masa – real name Alex Crossan – slipped out his fourth LP, one that somewhat flew under the radar. Curve 1 was a back-to-basics club record, eschewing A-List guests for a handful of trusted vocalists to elevate its harder cuts. Singapore-born, London-based alt-pop artist Yeule was one of them, and they bring joyful abandon to “We Are Making Out”, an ode to snogging on the London Underground’s various tube lines. Mind the closing doors! — T.S. London producer nimino came seemingly out of nowhere this year with his August viral track “I Only Smoke When I Drink.” An ode to drinking, then smoking, in order to avoid thinking about a seemingly tormented romance, the song is a light and punchy duet with a stuttering beat that’s spent 15 weeks on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and also clocked more than 20 million engagements on TikTok. A one to watch for 2025, indeed. — K. Bain There’s the EDM we know and love, and then there’s Girl EDM : a multifaceted celebration of femininity through dance, signature to Ninajirachi, and also the name of her September album. Across the project the glitchy, pitched sounds of hyperpop are punctuated by rave-ready beats that make every song hit even harder: especially on album opener “Angel Music,” a swirling, frantic collaboration with New York City duo MGNA Crrrta. On it the artists channel “Bangarang”-era Skrillex while making clear, as the vocals go, that this is “girl music” — with shimmery but hard-edged fourishes, and the occasional tongue-in-cheek (“weird!” one announces) vocal drops. — M.M. Welch electronic duo (and brothers) Overmono lay a spare, spacious production made of a skittering percussion and passing clouds of synth, then get the hell out of the way of the vocals by South London singer/songwriter Ruthven. His plaintive minor key delivering is full of longing and melancholy, which can be a tough mood to nail on a song ostensibly meant for the club. But overall, July’s “Gem Lingo (ovr now)” is the kind of set-closer fare that finds people just singing along with their eyes closed, and maybe a few tears leaking out. — K. Bain In the middle of the track list of Peggy Gou’s 2024 album I Hear You , “(It Goes Like) Nanana,” last year’s crossover smash that helped the South Korean producer level up her crowds, is placed next to “Lobster Telephone,” a spiritual follow-up that recaptures a lot of its predecessor’s slinkiness. Gou excels when juxtaposing airy, uncluttered production with a relentlessly thumping beat, and “Lobster Telephone” doubles down on her strengths — with a great breakdown to boot. — JASON LIPSHUTZ Spun from a melody that came to one of its members in a dream, Rüfüs du Sol ’s “Break My Love” is more than a promise of enduring love. There’s a determination, even defiance, in its refusal to let go in a push-and-pull relationship when the other side keeps pulling away. But the standout track from the Aussie trio’s latest album Inhale / Exhale captures you before a single word is uttered. Its slow, hypnotizing rhythm is led by what drummer James Hunt describes as a “weird... psychedelic stutter,” which deepens its grip on your gut with each loop – a perfect companion to the lyrics’ steely resolve. — K.R. When Sammy Virji and Interplanetary Criminal come together, chaos erupts in the best way. The rising U.K. garage stars teamed up on “Damager,” a speed-garage track that’s bursting with untamable energy: a brisk bassline, sampled vocals (from 2000’s “Just Begun,” by rapper Apathy) sped up like someone on their fourth cold brew and drums that wallop like whack-a-mole. Virji premiered the track during his Boiler Room Denver set, and in every video clip of it since, the crowd’s whooping and jumping with their hands in the air – all in one heaving mass – pretty much sums it up. — K.R. SG Lewis and Tove Lo are basically partners in crime, having worked on each other’s albums before teaming with Nelly Furtado for May’s sultry “Love Bites.” They officially cemented their partnership with June’s Heat EP, a tribute to the vibrancy of queer nightlife. The set’s title track pulses with acid house and trance influences, as Lo’s teasing refrain – “I already know you can’t take the heat” – invites listeners into a sweat-flinging whirlwind of desire. Like its racy music video, “Heat” embodies the carefree ecstasy of dancing with (and kissing strangers) on the dance floor. — K.R. U.K. dance producer Silk’s stellar Regret the Morning EP hits an early high — somewhat literally — with its intoxicating title track. Over spectral synth flares and a frisky bass line, singer-songwriter Mali-Koa sings in acrostic form about a destructive relationship, before spelling out in call-and-response form on the immediately addictive chorus: “D-R-U-G-S please/ ( Yes please! )” It’s a narrative blur of sex, drugs and dance — set during already-discombobulating golden hours — where the regret seems to be just as much about what she can’t do any more as what she knows she probably shouldn’t. — A.U . Shygirl set the scene for her breakout year with February’s Club Shy EP, a no-skips project from the British producer that featured this standout alongside German mainstay Boys Noize. Together, the pair maintain the effervescent vibe that marks Shygirls signature, while also giving this one some muscle in a ravey production that creates the foundation for the singer’s breathy delivery. Seven months after the EP’s release, she hit the road with Charli XCX and Troye Sivan as the support on their Sweat tour, bringing the Club Shy vibe to grateful fans across the country. — K. Bain The mega-collaboration “Push” joined an exclusive club this past October when it aired in an Apple commercial, a feat that’s previously elevated artists like Feist and Sofi Tukker . Skrillex is already a household name, but the wobbling bass track propelled the U.K. dubstep revivalist Hamdi, Argentinian rapper Taichu, U.K. producer Offaiah and Turkish act contra all to a new level of visibility. “Push” had plenty of momentum before its May release, getting rinsed ‘round the world on numerous festival stages (including Skrillex’ Coachella headline set as part of PHM). Supposedly a preview of the producer born Sonny Moore’s upcoming album, it leaves fans eagerly anticipating what’s next in 2025. — K.R. The Blessed Madonna caught Kylie Minogue at the right moment for her first proper album, Godspeed : revitalized as a commercial force thanks to surprise smash “Padam Padam” and her pair of top-notch Tension full-lengths, the pop icon is booking arenas, getting her flowers and game to lead strutting dance singles like “Edge of Saturday Night.” The collaboration works thanks to the urgency that both artists bring — the production crunches and Minogue pants, achieving nu-disco bliss by way of unyielding dedication. — J. Lipshutz The first song (after a spoken word intro) on TSHA’s sophomore album Sad Girl is a deliciously euphoric going-out-with-your-besties anthem inspired by the ’00 electro she listened to while coming of age in a small U.K. town. It features warm, confident vocals from London dance pop artist Rose Gray, who sings of the freedom found on the dancefloor. “Rose was perfect for it because she’s kind of camp and a lot of fun,” TSHA said of the track. “We wanted to make a sort of Cyndi Lauper ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ vibes as a positive start to the album. I didn’t want the album to be doom and gloom.” This buoyant track is very far from that. — A.M.Y. On “booboo,” left-field electronic maven Yaeji came out swinging with a joyful, buoyant club banger, one of two singles she released in 2024. The infectious three-and-a-half-minute track features a prominent bouncing bassline along with a playful sample of (and lyrical reference to) her 2017 breakout hit “Raingurl.” (“You know that I wasn’t really ready at the time; you know how the growing pains just don’t stop, yeah?” the producer acknowledges in her spoken word delivery.) It’s also a celebration of the joy found on the dancefloor with friends — and, for Yaeji, of a decade of raving with her fellow creatives in New York’s underground. — A.M.Y. Turns out John Mayer is the perfect guest vocalist for smooth, lightly tropical and ’80s-derived dance-pop — who would’ve guessed? The answer, of course, is “everyone.” But still, no one actually put a plan in action to make it happen until Zedd enlisted Mayer to step his way the dancefloor on “Automatic Yes,” from his rock-solid 2024 LP Telos . Getting the King of Minivan Rock to play the boyfriend you shouldn’t keep coming back to (but usually do) over plinking electric piano — and provide a ripping guitar riff on the outro? I mean... it certainly ain’t an automatic no. — A.U.

Awards season has arrived in the form of the Golden Globes nominations. The awards, which honor both movies and television programs, is often viewed as a preview of the upcoming Oscars. In this week's episode, co-hosts Bruce Miller and Terry Lipshetz go over the list, focusing largely on the movies, which tend to shine brightest at the ceremony. But they also take time to review a few of the TV shows, including the great, but rarely funny "The Bear," which is again in the comedy or musical category. We also have an interview with "Nickel Boys" director RaMell Ross, who spoke with Miller prior to the film receiving a nomination for best drama. Miller also talked with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who starred in the film. “Wicked”; “Anora”; “Emilia Perez”; “Challengers”; “A Real Pain”; “The Substance” “The Brutalist”; “A Complete Unknown,”; “Conclave”; “Dune: Part Two”; “Nickel Boys;” “September 5” Jesse Eisenberg, “A Real Pain”; Hugh Grant, “Heretic”; Gabriel LaBelle, “Saturday Night; Jesse Plemons, “Kinds of Kindness”’ Glen Powell, “Hitman”; Sebastian Stan, “A Different Man” Amy Adams, “Nightbitch”; Cynthia Erivo, “Wicked”; Karla Sofia Gascón, “Emilia Pérez”; Mikey Madison “Anora”; Demi Moore, “The Substance”; Zendaya, “Challengers” Pamela Anderson, “The Last Showgirl′′; Angelina Jolie, ”Maria”; Nicole Kidman, “Babygirl”; Tilda Swinton, “The Room Next Door”; Fernanda Torres, “I’m Still Here”; Kate Winslet, “Lee” Adrien Brody, “The Brutalist”; Timothée Chalamet, “A Complete Unknown’; Colman Domingo, “Sing Sing”; Ralph Fiennes, “Conclave”; Sebastian Stan, “The Apprentice’’ “Alien: Romulus”; Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”; Deadpool & Wolverine”; “Gladiator II”; “Inside Out 2”; “Twisters”; “Wicked”; “The Wild Robot” “All We Imagine As Light′′; ”Emilia Pérez”; “The Girl With the Needle”; “I’m Still Here”; “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”; “Vermiglio” “Flow”; “Inside Out 2”; “Memoir of a Snail”; “Moana 2”; “Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”; “The Wild Robot” Selena Gomez, ”Emilia Pérez”; Ariana Grande, “Wicked”; Felicity Jones, “The Brutalist”; Margaret Qualley, “The Substance”; Isabella Rossellini, “Conclave”; Zoe Saldaña, ”Emilia Pérez” Yura Borisov, “Anora”; Kieran Culkin, “A Real Pain”; Edward Norton, “A Complete Unknown”; Guy Pearce, “The Brutalist”; Jeremy Strong, ”The Apprentice”; Denzel Washington, “Gladiator II” Jacques Audiard, “Emilia Pérez”; Sean Baker, ”Anora”; Edward Berger, “Conclave”; Brady Corbet, “The Brutalist”; Coralie Fargeat, “The Substance”; Payal Kapadia, “All We Imagine As Light” Jacques Audiard, “Emilia Pérez”; Sean Baker, ”Anora”; Brady Corbet, Mona Fastvold, “The Brutalist”; Jesse Eisenberg, “A Real Pain”; Coralie Fargeat, “The Substance”; Peter Straughan, “Conclave” Volker Bertelmann, “Conclave”; Daniel Blumberg, “The Brutalist”; Kris Bowers, “The Wild Robot”; Clement Ducol, Camille “Emilia Pérez”; Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, “Challengers”; Hans Zimmer, “Dune: Part Two” “Beautiful That Way” from “The Last Showgirl” (music/lyrics by Andrew Wyatt, Miley Cyrus, Lykke Zachrisson); “Compress/Repress” from “Challengers’ (music/lyrics by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Luca Guadagnino; “El Mal” from EL MAL” from “Emilia Pérez” (music/lyrics by Clément Ducol, Camille, Jacques Audiard; “Forbidden Road” from ”Better Man′′ (music/lyrics by Robbie Williams, Freddy Wexler, Sacha Skarbek); “Kiss the Sky” from “The Wild Robot′′ (music/lyrics by Delacey, Jordan K. Iowa cornerback Jermari Harris has opted out of the remainder of the 2024 season in order to prepare for the NFL draft, according to a report by 247Sports.com . The 6-foot-1 sixth-year senior from Chicago has recorded 27 tackles, three interceptions and a team-high seven pass breakups in 10 games for the Hawkeyes this season. That includes a pick-6 in a 38-21 win over Troy earlier this season. Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) plays at Maryland on Saturday before closing out its regular season at home against Nebraska on Nov. 29. The Hawkeyes are already bowl eligible, so Harris is likely opting out of three games in total. After missing the entire 2022 season due to an ankle injury, Harris was suspended for two games of the following season for his involvement in the gambling investigation into Iowa athletics. He later emerged as the Hawkeyes' top cornerback, earning the team's comeback player of the year award after compiling 42 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups. Harris will finish his college career with 105 tackles and eight interceptions. --Field Level Media

Fortnite's New FPS Mode Is Good, But A Bit JankyThe latter dream came true, at least in a sense. Bissonette has one of the about 650 homes Mankato, Minnesota-based Earth Sheltered Technology has built since it began in 1981. The company, which has houses in the Twin Cities and Wisconsin as well as in California and Alaska, specializes in partly underground structures, basically man-made caves. Underground homes, also known as earth-sheltered homes, have been around for nearly as long as humans have, though the modern incarnation seemed to gain traction in the 1970s after the 1973 oil embargo and ensuing energy crisis, according to an article in magazine Mother Earth News. At the time, people were looking to reduce energy usage, especially when it came to heating and cooling their homes. Underground homes have other benefits, too, including durability — particularly in the face of natural disasters like tornadoes — and low-maintenance needs (no need to paint when dirt and grass cover the whole house). Perhaps that’s why Earth Sheltered Technology has produced the bulk of its homes, about 450, in the past 17 years, said owner Jeff Hickok. Besides achieving his childhood dream, Bissonette’s other inspiration for building his underground home was the book “Earth Sheltered Housing Design,” published in the late 1970s by the University of Minnesota’s Underground Space Center. John Carmody, one of the leaders of the underground-home movement at the time as a systems designer and environmentalist, oversaw the center and the book, which sold 250,000 copies, according the to university’s website. “I loved every bit of building it,” Bissonette said of his house. “I’m glad I made the decision to build it. I have no intention of ever selling it and made it wheelchair accessible so I can get around in case I need one.” Weathering any storm Bissonette said he has long worried about tornadoes. An underground home, he thought, would protect against that. Underground homes are known for their durability, Hickok said. He said at least two tornadoes have gone over his Mankato underground home. It’s a reason his company has been building so many underground houses in Oklahoma and Texas. Texas averages about 140 tornadoes each year, the most of any state, while Oklahoma ranks in the top five, per CNN. Other clients have reported the structures being able to withstand earthquakes, Hickok said. The U.S. Department of Energy’s website said earth-sheltered homes can cost less to insure, as they naturally can withstand high winds, hailstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes. The Australian Broadcasting Co. even published a story last year about such homes gaining popularity because of their ability to withstand high temperatures and bush fires. “The earth is a very good protector for tornadoes,” Hickok said. “A tornado can’t damage a home unless it can completely surround it, and with most underground homes, they only have south-facing windows.” In addition to saving money on a homeowner’s insurance policy, an underground home could also save on claims. Hail, for example, does minimal damage to the roof, with only some of the piping up top suffering damage. Earth Sheltered Technology was a retirement job for Jeff Hickok’s father, Jerry Hickok. Jeff Hickok said his dad had a fascination with living in a cellar as a child and created the company after finishing at his corporate job. As a kid, Hickok dreaded going to home shows with his father and didn’t pursue the business until later in his life, taking it on around 2007. “I didn’t realize how forward-thinking dad really was with energy-saving and safety of these things,” he said. “I’m so proud to be running the company that my father pioneered.” Energy efficiency Another big selling point: An underground home uses about 80% less energy than a traditional home of its size. That’s because the ground insulates it to keep it at a stable 50- to 60-degree internal temperature. South-facing windows warm it during the day, Hickok said. Dick and Jeanne Newport of Berlin, Wisconsin, remember the ’70s energy crisis and how people wanted to be energy independent. They visited a friend’s underground home back then and left inspired to have their own one day, which eventually happened in 2016. About 980,000 pounds of solid concrete surrounds their two-bedroom, two-bathroom underground home, and most winters, only a single wood-burning stove heats the 2,000-square-foot property, Dick Newport said. On the roof, the two have planted native grasses. “People thought our house was a septic mound because they didn’t know what it was,” Jeanne Newport said. “Until you get to the front, you can’t tell it’s a house. There’s tall prairie grass all around it, and it’s really hard to see the whole rounded shape.” They estimate they pay about $115 in utilities for their highest-usage month. The average Minnesotan pays more than $151 a month for electric and gas utilities, according to Kris Lindahl Real Estate. The Newports estimated it cost about $350,000 to build their house including all the interior design, electrical and plumbing. When adjusting for inflation, that comes out to $465,799 in 2024. Earth Sheltered Technology builds several concrete dome structures with steel beams as support, insulating and waterproofing them for the price of about $150 per square foot, according to Hickok. But the rest is up to the homeowners to DIY or hire contractors. Having to do extra work didn’t bug the Newports, and the lower energy bills every month make up for the cost of building the home. “There’s not a lot of maintenance because most of the house is covered in dirt, and it’s quiet if the windows are closed,” Dick Newport said. “We have peace of mind living here.” Unique vibe This past summer, a “hobbit house” in Pine Lake Township, Minnesota, listed for about $180,000, drawing attention for its unique underground design. Being different is yet another perk of having an earth-sheltered home for Bissonette, who is working on an art piece made of 5,000 empty wine bottles. Outside of his two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 4,000-square-foot home, there’s a large labyrinth in his yard filled with statues from Bali, including one that can identify evil, Bissonette said. There are also tall native grasses growing on the roof among a smattering of solar tubes and ventilation pipes. His home blends into the surrounding vegetation and looks like several hills with trees and shrubs growing on them. It’s not until visitors turn a corner that they’re able to see two garage doors poking out, alongside a front door, wide driveway and windows. When he built his house in 2001, many of his neighbors thought it looked like a military base because of how hidden it was from the main road. But the rooftop patio makes it perfect for hosting, Bissonette said of the views of rolling farmland and acres of wildlife. Bissonette taught himself and installed much of the electrical work, also repurposing salvaged wood for the interior walls, making it uniquely his own. “What surprises people the most is how light it is in the house,” he said. “They expect it to be dark because it is underground, but the curved interior surface of the domes reflect light throughout the space, bouncing it across the inner surfaces, making it bright and light-filled.”Dylan Hernández: MLS deal with Apple TV could be hurting league's efforts to grow its fan base

Here’s my 3-step plan to target a £2,400+ second income in 2025!

Wake Forest keeps trying new things early in the season, even if not all of the adjustments are by design. The Demon Deacons will try to stick to the script when Detroit Mercy visits for Saturday's game in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Demon Deacons (5-1) will be at home for the final time prior to three consecutive road games. Detroit Mercy (3-2) already has two more victories than all of last season. After a couple of narrow wins and a loss at Xavier, Wake Forest had a smoother time earlier this week in defeating visiting Western Carolina 82-69 on Tuesday night. Yet these are games when teams have to figure where contributions are going to come from in certain situations. The experimenting took a turn for Wake Forest in the Western Carolina game. Center Efton Reid III had limited minutes because of migraines, so there was a shift in responsibilities. Normal backcourt players Cameron Hildreth and Juke Harris logged time at the power forward slot. "That's just part of it," coach Steve Forbes said. "They did a good job adjusting. We ran a lot of stuff and there are several guys learning different positions. ... I give credit to those guys for doing the best job that they could do on the fly and adjusting to the play calls that we ran and the stuff that we changed." Wake Forest could excel if both Parker Friedrichsen and Davin Cosby can be consistent 3-point threats. Friedrichsen slumped with shooting in the first few games of the season and was replaced in the starting lineup by Cosby. In Tuesday's game, Friedrichsen drained four 3-pointers, while Cosby hit two. "It was really good to see Parker and Davin both make shots together," Forbes said. Not everything was solved for the Demon Deacons. Western Carolina collected 12 offensive rebounds, and that took some of the shine off Wake Forest's defensive efforts. "We can't be a good defensive team, or a really good defensive team, unless we rebound the ball," Forbes said. "It's demoralizing to your defense to get stops and then not get the ball." In Detroit Mercy's 70-59 win at Ball State on Wednesday, Orlando Lovejoy tallied 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. "We got the ball to the shooters and playmakers," first-year Titans coach Mark Montgomery said. "You could tell by the guys' body language that we were going to get a road win. It had been a long time coming." On Saturday, the Titans will look for their second road victory since February 2023. The outcome at Ball State seemed significant to Montgomery. "We had to get over the hump," he said. "Our guys grinded it out." --Field Level MediaPrince scores four as Radnor Valley pull away from drop zone

The question sounds so basic and friendly. But it’s actually loaded, as many mothers can attest. “Do you just love getting to be home with him all the time?” asks the younger, more put-together woman in the supermarket. “Must be so wonderful.” Wonderful, of course — and sometimes brain-numbing and soul-draining too, some exhausted fulltime moms might reply. Especially if, like Amy Adams’ character in Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch,” they’d left their prized art gallery job to this other woman. And so Adams responds, twice, showing in this very opening scene exactly why her typically brave, brutally frank performance lifts this movie from an oddly uneven script to something unequivocally worth seeing. First we get the honest answer, the one no one really gives until later in the shower: she feels “stuck inside of a prison of my own creation,” where she torments herself and ends up binge-eating Fig Newtons to keep from crying. She is angry all the time. Oh and, she has gotten dumber. Then we rewind and director-writer Heller has Adams give her real answer: “I do, I love it! I love being a Mom.” There we are, two minutes and 13 seconds into “Nightbitch” and you may already find yourself wowed by Adams. If not, just wait until her Mother is sitting at a chic restaurant with a bunch of colleagues from the art world, and her fangs come out. And we don’t mean figuratively. We mean literally. Let’s go back to the beginning, shall we? “Nightbitch” is based on the 2021 novel by Rachel Yoder, a feminist fable that the author has said came from her own malaise when pausing work for child-rearing. She sets her tale in an unidentified suburb of an unidentified city. Mother (characters all have generic names), formerly an admired installation artist, spends her weekdays alone with her adorable, blond 2-year old Son. Husband has a job that seems to bring him home only on weekends. The early scenes depicting Mother’s life are tight and impactful, a contrast to the confused havoc that will come toward the end of the film. Life revolves around the playground and the home, with occasional trips to storytime at the library where she notes, in narration, that she has no interest in the company of other moms — why should they be friends just because they’re moms? In fact, Mother lives in solitude, and director Heller does a nice job illustrating how that feels you can almost feel the weight of the afternoon coming around, at this comfortable but hardly ostentatious home, when it’s too early for dinner and you’ve done all the activities already and you wonder if you can make it through the day. Then things start to get weird. In the bathroom mirror, Mother starts noticing things. Her teeth are getting sharper. There’s something weird coming out of an apparent cyst at the bottom of her spine. She finds extra nipples. And that’s before she starts eating rare meat. (Also, if you love cats, you may want to close your eyes at one point.) Somewhow Adams, who also produces here, makes these things seem, if not quite natural, then logical. What’s happening is that Mother’s frustration is becoming ferocious. Dangerously ferocious. But also — empowering. At night, or so she thinks, she is a wild dog. Aspects of the film work wonderfully. Mother’s relationship with Son (twins Arleigh and Emmett Snowden) is lovely, largely due to a decision to let the young boys talk freely, with the adult actors reacting to their words. It lends a grounding realism to a film that quickly veers surreal. Less successful is the relationship between Mother and Husband (Scoot McNairy), which takes on too much importance as the film goes on, in a baffling way, rather than Mother’s transformation. (Also, just asking, has anyone in this movie ever heard of a babysitter?) More importantly, a story that posits itself on such a tantalizing idea — that by transforming into a dog, Mother discovers her true nature and power —resorts late in the game to a safer story about a marriage that never seemed appealing enough for us to care about anyway. It doesn’t help that it’s hard to grasp the distracting subplot about Mother’s own mother. None of this takes away from the strength of Adams’ performance. You believe her love for her child as much as you believe her resentment for what he is taking away from her. And Adams can make almost any line work, including one about a walnut. But we digress. It’s an irony that for reasons of storytelling, characters have generic names — because Adams is such a singular and particular, talent. The journey she embarks upon is bizarre indeed, but you won’t regret taking it with her. “Nightbitch,” a Searchlight Pictures release, has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association “for language and some sexuality. “ Running time: 98 minutes. Two stars out of four. We’ll try to refrain from bad baseball puns like “It’s a home run for animals!” and “Take a swing at adoption!” – but we’re weak and won’t really apologize. If you’re within eyeball range of the Angels’ Big A along the 57 freeway this month, you may notice a trio of adorable beasties staring back at you. “Adopt me!” it says over their furry little heads, and the A is ringed with the Angels’ distinctive halo. We’ll tell you how the Angels came to join forces with Social Compassion in Legislation animal activist Judie Mancuso to create the AdoptOC.com website aiming to boost shelter adoptions – it started with a Nextdoor request for cat traps, believe it or not – but first, let’s talk about why it’s important. Some 8 million animals land in American shelters each year, and as many as 1 million a year have been euthanized, according to national data kept by Animal Shelters Count . Deaths plunged during the pandemic, but they’re climbing again, hitting about 690,000 last year. The picture at Orange County’s biggest shelter, OC Animal Care, illustrates the trend on the local front. Things are far better than they were 15 years ago, when thousands of animals were euthanized each year, but hundreds are still put down every year, nonetheless. • Between January and September, 1,780 animals were euthanized at OC Animal Care, the vast majority of them young kittens (1,253). • In 2023, 2,084 animals were euthanized, the vast majority of them young kittens. • That was up quite a bit from 2022, when 1,563 animals were euthanized, the vast majority of them young kittens. Young kittens , people! The AdoptOC.com address leads to a page hosted by Mancuso’s Social Compassion website, linking to a multitude of area shelters and rescue organizations – OC Animal Care , PUP Laguna Beach , Promise 4 Paws , and shelters in Mission Viejo , Irvine , Newport Beach , San Clemente and Long Beach – as well as Petfinder and Adopt A Pet sites. Mancuso is ecstatic about what this can do for shelter animals. After all, there are 81 regular-season home games a year. “If we can do something at each game to promote pet adoption – all those people, all those eyeballs – it’s a coup,” Mancuso said. Mancuso crossed paths with Elizabeth Carpino, who’s married to Angels president John Carpino, on Nextdoor some years back. Carpino was looking for cat traps, which folks use to catch strays so they can be spayed/neutered/rehomed. Mancuso had some – but how could she be sure the captured cats wouldn’t be used for coyote food or somesuch? Carpino responded with a photograph of her Pet Lover license plate, which raises money for low-cost spay and neuter surgeries. The plate was a pet project of Mancuso’s Social Compassion in Legislation. A friendship was born. Recently, they got to brainstorming about how to help more animals. That big screen – maybe it could feature a pet of the week? They scrambled to get the website domain and put together content on responsible adoption and link to the shelters and rescues. This month, everything went live and the “Adopt OC” ad appeared on screen on the Big A. It’s expected to make 2 million impressions in December alone. In the 2000s, things were bleak. At OC Animal Care, the county’s largest shelter, some 13,000 animals were euthanized in a single year . That makes the 2,000 or so we’re seeing these days seem paltry. Thank things like California’s ban on pet store sales from commercial breeders, and more emphasis on chipping and spaying and neutering. So while almost half of shelter intakes were euthanized during the darkest days back then, nearly 95% of dogs and 79.5% of cats had live releases so far this year, according to OC statistics from January through September . That’s better than 2023 , when 94.1% of dogs and 71% of cats made it out alive, and bests 2022, when 94.8% of dogs and 77% of cats made it out alive. Michael Mavrovouniotis, animal lover, volunteer number-cruncher and close watcher of O.C. Animal Care, is heartened by the partnership with the Angels. It can only help. Mavrovouniotis pushed hard to convince the shelter to open its kennels to would-be adopters more often, rather than asking them to go online to schedule appointments with animals they only see in pictures. His research paper, published in the Journal of Shelter Medicine and Community Animal Health , found that visitors strolling through kennels and meeting more dogs face-to-face resulted in more adoptions. “The statistics show that the save rate held up well in the first half of the year with kennel viewing hours helping adoptions. But it’s slipping a little in the 3rd Quarter,” he said by email. “The smart move for the shelter would be to expand viewing hours on weekends. That’s when most adopters want to visit.” OC’s shelter hosts fewer hours of open kennel viewing than many local shelters, he said: 21 hours a week in O.C. compared to 28 in Mission Viejo, 29.5 in Long Beach, 30 in Irvine, 36 in Los Angeles County and 48 in L.A. city. More hours would help, and campaigns like the one on the Big A will help. “Our local shelters have many wonderful adoptable animals,” he said. “Go visit and bring home a new loyal friend!” It could be a grand slam. Caterpillar director Johnson acquires $39,857 in stockWith the end of the calendar year in sight, many older investors will soon be making significant withdrawals from their traditional individual retirement accounts (IRAs), 401(k)s, etc. -- in particular, those who may have been putting off beginning those withdrawals for as long as they could. See, while you don't have to take your very first required minimum distribution -- or RMD -- from most tax-deferred accounts until April 1 of the year after you turn 72, for every year beyond that first one, these withdrawals must be made by Dec. 31. So if you do postpone that first distribution into the year that you turn 73, you'll need to take two distributions that year. The starting RMD for a 73-year-old is roughly 3.7% of the account's value as of the end of the previous year, for the record. But this percentage grows a little bit every year. These distribution requirements raise an important question for many senior investors, though: If you aren't taking these disbursements anyway to cover your living expenses and other bills, what should you do with the money you're being compelled to take out of your retirement accounts? Here are five solid options to consider. 1. If you're eligible, make an IRA contribution It may sound crazy given that you're being forced to withdraw money from your retirement accounts. But presuming that you're eligible, you can simultaneously use that RMD money to help fund IRA contributions for the tax year in which you withdrew it. The chief factor in determining that eligibility, of course, will be whether or not you have earned income -- via a job that generates work-based wages. This year, anyone 50 or older can contribute the lesser of $8,000 or 100% of their workplace earnings into either a traditional IRA or (if you aren't earning too much) a Roth IRA. However, the IRS doesn't really care where the money comes from. Hitting the age when you must start taking required minimum distributions also doesn't negate your eligibility to participate in an employer-sponsored plan like a 401(k) -- assuming you're still working somewhere that offers one. Just bear in mind that depositing new money into any non-Roth IRA will cause your future RMDs to be higher than they otherwise would be. Also remember that while contributions to IRAs can be tax-deductible, required minimum distributions are also taxable income. Whatever the case, if you'd still like to keep as much money as possible in a tax-deferred account, this option would work. 2. Help cover the tax bill of a Roth conversion If you don't want to worry about any of this RMD stuff with your IRA ever again, you could make it all go away. Just convert your traditional IRA into a Roth IRA -- Roths aren't subject to required minimum distributions. This move is almost always a 100%-taxable event, however. That is to say, the entire balance you convert will be treated as taxable income in the year you perform the maneuver. While you can use some of the converted funds to cover that tax bill, that would take a sizable bite out of your balance. The conversion also doesn't negate the RMDs for any year prior to the year it is completed. With a bit of careful timing, however, you can satisfy your prior year's required minimum distribution and offset at least some of the tax cost of converting your IRA to a Roth. Something else to think about: It's better to implement Roth conversions when the stock market's down since this will minimize your tax bill. 3. Put it in a money market fund If neither of these options works for you, there are other things you can do with your RMDs that are simpler in terms of taxes. Chief among these alternatives is just taking the money and parking it somewhere safe as well as productive. A high-yield money market account will do nicely. Let's be clear. The sort of rates offered by most checking and savings accounts remain unimpressive. You'll specifically want to deposit this money into a true money market mutual fund, most of which are paying in the ballpark of 4% to 5% right now. Some of these money market funds have minimum holding periods, and in most cases, you'll need to instruct your bank or broker to sell shares of them in order to access your money. It could take a day to settle such trades. However, considering how much stronger the returns are from such accounts, they're an attractive option. 4. Invest it as your portfolio's goals dictate If you have the financial flexibility to do so, you could -- and arguably should -- reinvest your RMD money in a way that helps your overall portfolio achieve your bigger-picture goals. This could mean putting it into dividend stocks, or it could mean buying growth stocks . Or maybe both. Whatever your goal, just remember that this money is no longer in a tax-deferred account, while a sizable remainder of your retirement savings may still be in an IRA. If you're buying dividend stocks specifically to live on the income they generate, you may as well do it in a taxable brokerage account. You'll be paying taxes on that dividend income either way. 5. Give it away (tax efficiently) Finally, if you're taking required minimum distributions that you don't need now and feel confident that you'll never need in the future, you can give the money away. Of course, that's the case with any funds you might have. If you're making charitable gifts, however, you may as well make them in as tax efficient a manner as possible. Designating an RMD as a qualified charitable distribution does that job nicely. These are simply direct transfers of cash or assets to legitimate charitable organizations before they ever reach your hands or are put in your name outside of a retirement account. At first blush, this direct-gifting process seems unnecessary. After all, although required minimum distributions are taxed as income, donations are tax deductible. There is a difference, however. You have to itemize to claim regular donations as charitable deductions, but a QCD effectively acts as a deduction without itemizing by reducing what otherwise would have been taxable income. Also, for most individual filers, there are relatively low annual limits to tax deductions stemming from charitable gifts of cash or assets held in your name. That's in contrast with qualified charitable distributions, which can be used to satisfy the IRS's required minimum distribution rules, but are never put in your name to begin with and therefore don't raise your taxable income in any given year. This year's qualified charitable distribution cap is $105,000 per person, or a total of $210,000 for joint filers.

Alex Ovechkin has a broken left fibula and is expected to be out four to six weeks, an injury that pauses the Washington Capitals superstar captain’s pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record. The Capitals updated Ovechkin’s status Thursday after he was evaluated by team doctors upon returning from a three-game trip. The 39-year-old broke the leg in a shin-on-shin collision Monday night with Utah's Jack McBain, and some of his closest teammates knew it was not good news even before Ovechkin was listed as week to week and placed on injured reserve. The Australian government's support for a UN resolution calling for an end to Israel's occupation of Gaza is to blame for a widely condemned arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue, the Jewish state's prime minister says. or signup to continue reading It is impossible to separate the reprehensible arson attack from the federal government's "extreme anti-Israeli position," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted on social media early on Saturday. "Including the scandalous decision to support the UN resolution calling on Israel 'to bring an end to its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as rapidly as possible', and preventing a former Israeli minister from entering the country," he wrote on X. "The burning of the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne is an abhorrent act of antisemitism," he said. The Adass Israel synagogue at Rippon Lea in Melbourne's southeast had two of its three buildings gutted after suspected masked intruders allegedly broke into the building and set it alight in the early hours of Friday. Two congregants preparing for morning prayers, were inside. They were evacuated, with one sustaining minor injuries. Police have not ruled out terrorism as a motive, believing the attack was targeted. The suspects had poured accelerant on the floor inside the synagogue and set it on fire before fleeing when they were disturbed by a congregant, police said. Israel President Isaac Herzog said he firmly condemned the horrific arson amid an intolerable wave of attacks on Jewish communities when he spoke to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday night. "I noted to the prime minister that this rise and the increasingly serious antisemitic attacks on the Jewish community required firm and strong action, and that this was a message that must be heard clearly from Australia's leaders," he said. "I thanked him for his ongoing efforts to combat antisemitism, and expressed my trust that the local law enforcement would do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to justice." Political and religious leaders have widely condemned the attack on the synagogue, built by Holocaust survivors. Mr Albanese said he had no tolerance for antisemitism. "This deliberate, unlawful attack goes against everything we are as Australians and everything we have worked so hard to build as a nation," he said in a statement. Australian Federal Police will provide all requested resources to Victorian authorities, he said. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said police patrols would be increased, and pledged $100,000 to rebuilding the synagogue. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. Carrefour's cold shoulder for South American beef sparks a backlash from Brazil

BATON ROUGE, La. — Mikaylah Williams scored a season-high 32 points, including a game-tying jumper with 4.3 seconds left that sent the game to overtime, and No. 5 LSU remained unbeaten with a 94-88 comeback win over Stanford on Thursday night. Williams also scored six of the Tigers’ 14 overtime points, including a shot-clock-beating 3-pointer with 38 seconds that was the dagger. Reserve guard Kailyn Gilbert had 25 points (five in overtime) for LSU (10-0), and Flau’Jae Johnson contributed 21 points before fouling out with 1:05 left in overtime. Stanford (7-2), which led for almost 381⁄2 minutes, was led by Nunu Agara, who had 29 points and 13 rebounds. Brooke Demetre added 19 points, Elena Bosgana 16 and Jzaniya Harriel 15. Takeaways Stanford: The Cardinal stayed in a 2-3 defensive zone, hoping LSU’s impatience would lead to quick outside shots from a team with just two legit 3-point shooters. The Tigers managed to stay within striking distance by scoring off turnovers, including one that allowed Williams hit the tying jumper with 4.3 seconds left. LSU: The Tigers hadn’t played a team this season as big, strong, disciplined and fundamentally sound as Stanford and it showed. LSU didn’t have the speed to contain Stanford’s starting front line, which combined for 64 points and 21 rebounds. Key moment The Tigers were clinging to an 88-86 lead in overtime with the shot clock winding down when Williams hit a deep 3-pointer with 38 seconds left. Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney provided his honest opinion on Philadelphia Eagles fans before his team travels to Philly this weekend. "I know they love their fans, but I'm sure teams don't love their fans. We can't stand their fans," Clowney said. "But Philly fans, they love their team. That's all I can tell you about Philly fans. They love their team. They throw stuff at you. They do everything. They talk the most junk out of any fans I've ever dealt with throughout my career." The Athletic's Joseph Person then asked if this game is one where you leave the family behind. "Oh yeah, for sure," Clowney said. "It's cold up there, so I'm sure they ain't trying to go." For further context, the good-natured Clowney smiled as he provided his assessment of Philadelphia fans. He didn't seem as though he was looking to slam and criticize them from a soapbox so much as he was providing an honest answer to a question about the fans he's about to encounter Sunday. On the professional sports side, Philadelphia fandom is arguably as close as one can get in the United States to international football followings. Their passion and love (and sometimes hate) for their teams and players is as extreme as one can find. Eagles fans are out in full force of late, especially with the team riding an eight-game win streak to a 10-2 record. They notably took over AT&T Stadium as the Eagles crushed the Dallas Cowboys 34-6 in November. On one hand, their attachment and pride can be seen as admirable. On the other hand, Philadelphia sports fans have certainly had their share of bad moments over the years, perhaps none more infamous and discussed than the booing and then pelting of Santa Claus with snowballs in 1968 . They show off the good and bad extremes quite a bit. A Time Magazine headline on an October 2023 Sean Gregory piece notably reads: "Philly Sports Fans Are the Worst. They're Also the Best." In sum, Philadelphia sports fans are among the best (or the best) if you root or play for their teams. Of note, their remarkable support of shortstop Trea Turner to in effect help push him out of a monstrous 2023 slump will be remembered for quite some time. If you hate their teams or play against Philadelphia, though, then one might not have the most respect for their followers. At the very least, it's understandably not a fun place to play for Clowney and other visiting NFL players. However, that's what Carolina is tasked with doing for a 1 p.m. ET matchup on Sunday on Lincoln Financial Field.

First, left tackle Andrew Thomas went down, suffering a season-ending foot injury against the Cincinnati Bengals. The offensive line immediately ceased to operate with any semblance of the quality it had early in the year, sealing the offense’s fate as a cellar-dwelling unit. UK study: Older adults less likely to experience cybercrime than younger adults—but it's more financially devastatingHonda, Nissan move to deepen ties, sources say, including possible merger Nissan Motor CEO Makoto Uchida and Honda Motor CEO Toshihiro Mibe attend press conference in Tokyo. — Reuters/File TOKYO: Honda and Nissan are in talks to deepen ties, two people said on Wednesday, including a possible merger, the clearest sign yet of how Japan’s once seemingly unbeatable auto industry is being reshaped by challenges from Tesla and Chinese rivals. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700472799616-0'); }); A combined Honda and Nissan would create a $54 billion company with annual output of 7.4 million vehicles, making it the world’s third-largest auto group by vehicle sales after Toyota and Volkswagen. The two firms already forged a strategic partnership in March to cooperate in electric vehicle development, but Nissan’s deepening financial and strategic trouble in recent months has added more urgency for closer cooperation with larger rival Honda. Nissan announced a $2.6 billion cost savings plan last month that includes cutting 9,000 jobs and 20 per cent of its global production capacity, as slumping sales in China and the United States led to an 85 per cent plunge in second-quarter profit. “This deal appears to be more about bailing out Nissan, but Honda itself is not resting on its laurels,” said Sanshiro Fukao, executive fellow at Itochu Research Institute. “Honda’s cash flow is set to deteriorate next year and its EVs haven’t been going so well.” Shares of Nissan closed nearly 24 per cent higher in Tokyo trade on Wednesday, while shares of Honda, whose market value of $43 billion is more than four times bigger than that of Nissan, declined 3.0 per cent. Shares of Mitsubishi Motors, in which Nissan is the top shareholder with a 24 per cent stake, gained nearly 20 per cent. The automakers have been grappling with challenges from EV makers, particularly in China, where BYD and others have surged ahead. The talks between Honda and Nissan, first reported by the Nikkei newspaper, could allow the companies to cooperate more on technology and help them create a more formidable domestic rival to Toyota. The discussions are focused on finding ways to bolster collaboration and include the possibility of setting up a holding company, said the people, who declined to be identified because the information has not been made public. The companies are also discussing the possibility of a full merger, according to one of the people, as well as looking at ways to cooperate with Mitsubishi.Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi said no deal had been announced by any of the companies, though Nissan and Mitsubishi noted the three automakers had said previously they were considering opportunities for future collaboration. French automaker Renault, Nissan’s largest shareholder, is open in principle to a deal and would examine all the implications of a tie-up, two people familiar with the matter said.A Renault spokesperson declined to comment.Renault shares were up 6.1 per cent at 1217 GMT.The three Japanese automakers are expected to hold a joint news conference in Tokyo on Monday, according to a source familiar with the matter. Taiwan’s Foxconn, which manufactures Apple’s iPhones and has been seeking to expand its nascent EV contract manufacturing business, approached Nissan about a bid but it was rejected by the Japanese firm, two separate sources familiar with the matter said. Bloomberg News reported earlier on Wednesday that Foxconn had approached Nissan to take a controlling stake.Foxconn did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while a Nissan spokesperson declined to comment on Foxconn. CHANGING LANDSCAPE Over the past year, an EV price war launched by Tesla and BYD has intensified pressure on any automakers losing money on the next-generation vehicles. That has pushed companies like Honda and Nissan to seek ways to cut costs and speed vehicle development, and mergers are a major step in that direction. “In the mid- to long-term, this is good for the Japanese car industry as it creates a second axis against Toyota,” said Seiji Sugiura, a senior analyst at Tokai Tokyo Intelligence Laboratory. “Constructive rivalry with Toyota is a positive for the rather stagnating Japanese car industry when it must compete with Chinese automakers, Tesla and others.”S&P Global Ratings said it would take time for the synergies from a potential merger to boost the firms’ creditworthiness. Differences in corporate culture and strategies may mean a merger that does not give one side control is unlikely to have meaningful results.“In our view, there have been few instances where mergers and alliances between major automakers have led to significant benefits,” it said in a note.

Imran insists on demands to put off civil disobedienceWASHINGTON (AP) — A person accused of accosting U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace in a Capitol Office building pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to a misdemeanor assault charge. Witnesses told police that James McIntyre, 33, of Chicago, shook Mace’s hand in an “exaggerated, aggressive” manner after approaching the South Carolina Republican in the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday evening, according to a police affidavit. Mace, who is identified only by her initials in a court filing, posted a string of social media messages about the incident. She said she was “physically accosted” at the Capitol, and she thanked President-elect Donald Trump for calling her Wednesday morning to check on her condition. “I’m going to be fine just as soon as the pain and soreness subside,” Mace wrote. Mace declined to be treated by a paramedic after her encounter with McIntyre, who was arrested Tuesday by the Capitol Police, the affidavit says. Mace told police that McIntyre said, “Trans youth serve advocacy,” while shaking her hand. Last month, Mace proposed a resolution that would prohibit any lawmakers and House employees from “using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex.” Mace said the bill is aimed specifically at Delaware Democrat Sarah McBride — the first transgender person to be elected to Congress. A magistrate judge ordered McIntyre’s release after an arraignment in Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Efforts to reach an attorney for McIntyre weren’t immediately successful.

Baba Sadiq, the defeated National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Okaikwei Central constituency, has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating that they should be scared of what will happen in Parliament. Speaking at a party rally, Baba Sadiq declared, “We are not cowards in this country. We were not born to be cowards. The blood that runs through our veins in NDC is the blood of revolution.” Baba Sadiq’s comments come on the heels of his defeat in the Okaikwei Central constituency, where he lost to Patrick Boamah of the NPP after a re-collation exercise. Boamah secured 21,099 votes, while Baba Sadiq garnered 19,368 votes. This defeat is a significant blow to the NDC, which had hoped to win the seat. However, Baba Sadiq remains undeterred, and his warning to the NPP is a clear indication that the NDC is not ready to concede defeat. He continued, “Nana Akufo-Addo is going. He’s an out-gone president of the country. Bawumia has lost. The IGP doesn’t have any locus. Jean Mensa cannot choose for Ghanaians who they want to be their MPs.” Baba Sadiq also emphasized that the NDC worked hard to be voted for and that every single seat they won would be sworn into Parliament. He warned, “If the EC has elected them three days ago, they should be scared for what we’ll do on the 5th of January.” This statement is a clear threat to the NPP, and it suggests that the NDC is planning to take drastic action to challenge the election results. Baba Sadiq stated, “We won the elections credibly. On behalf of myself, on behalf of Dome Kwabenya, on behalf of Ablekuma North, on behalf of Tema Central on behalf of Obuasi East, this is a strong warning to them.” He continued, “To Afenyo-Markin, if this is what you wanted to achieve, to be retained as a minority leader, you failed. You will not be retained”. Background Baba Sadiq lost the Okaikwei Central seat to Patrick Boamah after a re-collation exercise. The Electoral Commission (EC) under duress had initially declared Baba Sadiq the winner, but a court order led to a re-collation, which resulted in Patrick Boamah being declared the winner. -BY Daniel BampoeNEW YORK (AP) — The man accused of burning a woman to death inside a New York City subway train used a shirt to fan the flames, a prosecutor said Tuesday at his arraignment on murder charges. Sebastian Zapeta, 33, who federal immigration officials said is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally, was not required to enter a plea and did not speak at the hearing in Brooklyn criminal court. Zapeta, wearing a white jumpsuit over a weathered black hooded sweatshirt, will remain jailed at the city's Rikers Island complex and is due back in court on Friday. His lawyer did not ask for bail. Zapeta is charged with two counts of murder, accusing him of intentionally killing the woman and killing her while committing arson. He is also charged with one count of arson. The top charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the attack a “gruesome and senseless act of violence” and said it would be “met with the most serious consequences.” The apparently random attack occurred Sunday morning on an F train that was stopped at the Coney Island station. The victim's identification is still pending. Authorities say Zapeta approached the woman, who may have been sleeping in the train, and set her clothing on fire with a lighter. Zapeta then fanned the flames with a shirt, engulfing her in fire, Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg said in court Tuesday. Zapeta then sat on a bench on the subway platform and watched, Rottenberg said. According to Rottenberg, Zapeta told detectives that he didn’t know what happened but identified himself in images of the attack. Zapeta's lawyer, public defender Andrew Friedman, did not speak to reporters after the arraignment. A message seeking comment was left for him. Video on social media appears to show some people looking on from the platform and at least one police officer walking by while the woman is on fire inside the train. NYPD Transit Chief Joseph Gulotta said Sunday that several officers responded to the fire and one stayed to keep the crime scene “the way it’s supposed to be" while the others went to get fire extinguishers and transit workers. “Officers who were on patrol on an upper level of that station smelled and saw smoke and went to investigate. What they saw was a person standing inside the train car fully engulfed in flames,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. They eventually put the fire out, but “unfortunately, it was too late,” Tisch said, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Zapeta was taken into custody Sunday afternoon while riding a train on the same subway line after teenagers recognized him from images circulated by the police. A Brooklyn address for Zapeta released by police matches a shelter that provides housing and substance abuse support. The shelter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Federal immigration officials said Zapeta was deported in 2018 but later reentered the U.S. illegally. The crime deepened a growing sense of unease among some New Yorkers about the safety of the subway system, amplified by graphic video of the attack that ricocheted across social media. Overall, crime is down in the transit system compared to last year. Major felonies declined 6% between January and November compared to the same time period last year, according to data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. But murders are up, with nine killings this year through November compared to five during the same period last year. There have also been several high-profile incidents, including one in September where police inadvertently shot two bystanders and a fellow officer when they opened fire on a man holding a knife in front of a train. Earlier this month, a Manhattan jury acquitted former Marine Daniel Penny in the chokehold death last year of an agitated subway rider. The case became a flashpoint in debates over safety, homelessness and mental illness on the system. Policing the subway is difficult, given the vast network of trains moving between 472 stations. Each stop contains multiple entry points and, in many stations, multiple floors and platforms. This story has been corrected to show that the name of Zapeta's lawyer is Andrew Friedman, not Ed Friedman.

Colorado would not disclose the amount of insurance coverage each received, citing privacy laws. Coach Deion Sanders and athletic director Rick George both said it was the largest in college football history. “We happen to have two players that are probably going to be the first two picks of the NFL draft,” Sanders said Monday. “We all know who those two are and they have received, I think, the highest number of coverage that has ever been covered in college football. It far exceeds anyone that has ever played this game of college football.” While college programs maintain insurance policies for their athletes in case of injury, Colorado increased disability coverage for its entire roster in the Alamo Bowl. Sanders, the coach of the No. 20 Buffaloes, ensured his QB son and two-way star Hunter received larger policies since both are expected to be among the top 10 selections in the upcoming NFL draft. “It was his idea we should get disability insurance for our athletes for this game to ensure that they played and if there was some kind of injury that they would be well taken care of,” George said. “So, we worked together on that. We’re excited about it. We think it’s great that all our players are playing in the game. That’s what all bowl games should be like.” RELATED COVERAGE Boise State’s legacy includes winning coaches and championship moments Hajj-Malik Williams throws 2 TDs passes to help No. 24 UNLV beat Cal 24-13 in the LA Bowl Mike Shula is back in the SEC at South Carolina after nearly two decades since Alabama fired him Colorado (9-3, No. 23 CFP) will face the 17th-ranked BYU Cougars (10-2, No. 17 CFP) in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday. While most teams are scrambling with starters opting out of bowl games this year to enter the transfer portal or NFL draft, the Buffaloes did not lose any player on their two-deep roster. “It’s more than what I got (when he played at Kansas State),” Colorado linebackers coach Andre’ Hart said. “They gave us a helmet and said pop this on your leg and get out there and play. For them to get that (increased insurance coverage), I just think it’s beneficial. To talk about where the game is, where it’s going and how leadership is taking care of the players, I thought that’s excellent.” Shedeur Sanders completed 337 of 454 passes for 3,926 yards and 35 touchdowns this season. Many scouting services have Sanders rated as the top quarterback in this year’s draft. Hunter received the Heisman Trophy as a two-way standout at cornerback and wide receiver. He had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns and as a cornerback had four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and limited the opposition to 22 receptions on 688 defensive snaps. “They’ve taken care of us, everybody,” Colorado running back Micah Welch said. “It really means a lot to have every teammate up here. Former Deputy National Security Adviser KT McFarland on rebels overthrowing the Assad regime in Syria and the role the U.S. should play in the conflict. Islamist leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani, who led a lightning offensive through Syria, has a long history of extremism despite a recent appeal to moderate policies. "Golani is a specially designated global terrorist," Bill Roggio, managing editor of Long War Journal, told Fox News Digital. "He was a member of al Qaeda... the U.S. keeps him on the list for a reason." Roggio’s comments come after Islamist rebels led by Golani’s organization, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led an offensive throughout Syria that resulted in the capture of the country’s capital, Demascus, and the overthrow of the regime of Bashar Assad, who fled the country Saturday as rebels closed in on the city. (Omar Haj Kadour/AFP via Getty Images) Golani was first drawn to jihadi thinking following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S., according to a report from the Guardian. He left Syria and joined al Qaeda in Iraq , only to return to his home country in 2011 during a revolt against Assad’s regime, eventually joining the side of al Qaeda’s Ayman al-Zawahiri in 2013. Golani would cut ties with al Qaeda in 2016 and lead a merger between HTS and other Islamist groups in northwest Syria in 2017, bringing him control of territory that had fallen out of government hands during the country’s long civil war. The U.S. Department of State designated Geolani as a specially designated global terrorist in May 2013, citing his leadership in multiple terrorist attacks throughout Syria that often targeted civilians. "No one has the right to erase another group. These sects have coexisted in this region for hundreds of years, and no one has the right to eliminate them," Golani said in regard to Syria’s religious minority groups in an interview with CNN Friday. But Roggio said there is little evidence that moderate tone would continue as rebels take charge of Syria, arguing Geloni plays a good political game. "He plays the moderate game very well, but he’s a global jihadist. He’s an expert at manipulating," Roggio said. Between April 2018 and March 2019, adults 55 and older in England and Wales lost more than €4 million to cybercrime, internet-based fraud including hacking and (i.e., tricking vulnerable victims into transferring money or sharing sensitive information). Cybercrime is a threat to older adults who spend time online; potential psychological and financial consequences range from anxiety and depression to disrupted emergency funds and dissipated life savings. The researchers analyzed 35,069 responses to the 2019–2020 Crime Survey for England and Wales, a survey administered via face-to-face interviews to randomly selected English and Welsh adults 16 and older. Participants self-reported whether they experienced cybercrime once or more in the last 12 months and indicated if it led to financial loss. The researchers tracked participants' sensory, physical, cognitive and as well as sociodemographic variables like age, gender, ethnicity and occupation. Results indicate that respondents aged 75 and older were least likely to report experiencing cybercrime, while those aged 16-24 were most likely—an expected outcome based on younger people's increased internet use. However, the older age group reported more instances of repeat victimization and resulting financial loss. Demographically, men and those who identified as Black or of mixed/multiple ethnicities reported more victimization than women and White respondents. Those in managerial occupations reported more cybercrime, as did individuals in worse health. Because older adults reported less frequent, yet more severe, cybercrime cases, the authors suggest that shame, embarrassment or the fear of blame or disbelief may foster under-reporting. The researchers encourage efforts to equip older adults to proactively identify and freely report cyber fraud. Future studies may account for the impact of social isolation and increased technology usage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cast members Vanessa Williams, who plays Miranda Priestly, and Matt Henry, who stars as art director Nigel, were among those posing on the red carpet ahead of the performance which showcases an original score by Sir Elton. The variety show will also see debuts from British singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor with her hit track Murder On The Dancefloor while Eurovision winner Nemo is also featured on the bill. Also posing on the carpet were US magicians and comedy duo Penn and Teller, whose performance marks their 50th anniversary. Comedy will come from Ted Lasso star Ellie Taylor, writer and comic Scott Bennett, Scottish comedian Larry Dean and political comic Matt Forde – who posed on the red carpet with a crutch after undergoing surgery for cancer on his spine. Among the arrivals was TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, who will make an appearance in this year’s show with her Change And Check Choir led by Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow. The choir, made up of women from across the UK who detected their breast cancer through Kelly’s campaign, will perform Love Is All Around, which is being re-released to raise awareness of breast cancer early detection. It comes hours after Camilla insisted the “show must go on” after pulling out of attending the performance on Friday evening as doctors advised that she should prioritise rest. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms, as a result of which doctors have advised that, after a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritise sufficient rest. “With great regret, she has therefore withdrawn from attendance at tonight’s Royal Variety Performance. His Majesty will attend as planned.” A royal source said the Queen was “naturally disappointed to miss the evening’s entertainments and sends her sincere apologies to all those involved, but is a great believer that ‘the show must go on'”. “She hopes to be back to full strength and regular public duties very soon,” the source added. The Royal Variety Performance will air on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player in December. Money raised from the show will go to help people from the world of entertainment in need of care and assistance, with the Royal Variety Charity launching an initiative to help those with mental health issues this year.T oday in America, 60% of our people live paycheck to paycheck, 85 million people are uninsured or underinsured and 21.5 million households are paying more than 50% of their income on housing. We have one of the highest rates of childhood poverty of almost any developed country on Earth, and 25% of older adults are trying to survive on $15,000 a year or less. In other words, the United States has fallen far behind other major countries in protecting the most vulnerable, and our government has failed millions of working families. But while so many Americans are struggling to get by, the United States is spending record-breaking amounts of money on the military. In the coming days, with relatively little debate, Congress will overwhelmingly pass the National Defense Authorization Act, approving close to $900bn for the Department of Defense (DoD). When spending on nuclear weapons and “emergency” defense spending is included, the total will approach $1tn. We now spend more than the next nine countries combined. I don’t often agree with Elon Musk, but he is right when he says the Pentagon “has little idea how its annual budget of more than $800bn is spent.” The Department of Defense is the only government agency that has been unable to pass an independent audit. It recently failed its seventh attempt in a row and could not fully account for huge portions of its $4.126tn in assets. Very few people who have researched the military-industrial complex doubt that there is massive fraud, waste and cost over-runs in the system. Defense contractors routinely overcharge the Pentagon by 40% – and sometimes more than 4,000%. For example, in October, RTX (formerly Raytheon) was fined $950m for inflating bills to the DoD, lying about labor and material costs, and paying bribes to secure foreign business. In June, Lockheed Martin was fined $70m for overcharging the navy for aircraft parts, the latest in a long line of similar abuses. The F-35, the most expensive weapon system in history, has run up hundreds of billions in cost overruns. Today, as a result of massive consolidation in the industry, a large portion of the Pentagon budget now goes to a handful of huge defense contractors like Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman. That consolidation has been extremely profitable for the industry: since 2022, these four contractors have brought in $609bn in revenues, including $353bn in US taxpayer funds, and recorded $57bn in profits. During that same period, they have spent $61bn on dividends and stock buybacks to make their wealthy stockholders even richer. These defense contractors also provide their CEOs with exorbitant compensation packages. In the last three years for which information is available, these companies paid their CEOs more than $257m combined – with annual salaries that are about 100 times more than the secretary of defense and 500 times more than the average newly enlisted service member. How does this happen? How do we keep handing huge amounts of money to companies that routinely overcharge the American taxpayer and often engage in fraud? The answer is not complicated. These companies – like the drug companies, insurance companies, Wall Street and the fossil fuel industry – spend millions on campaign contributions and lobbying. In the recent election cycle, defense contractors spent nearly $251m on lobbying and contributed almost $37m to political candidates. Surprise, surprise! Most members of Congress vote for greatly inflated military budgets with few questions asked. The lack of accountability at the Department of Defense is not just costing American taxpayer dollars. It’s costing lives. The United States is providing many billions of dollars to help defend Ukraine from Putin’s invasion. When defense contractors said they couldn’t ramp up production without more taxpayer support, Congress repeatedly appropriated emergency funding, with roughly $78.5bn going to buy equipment and services from the major defense contractors. How did those “patriotic” companies respond? They jacked up prices. RTX increased prices for Stinger missiles from $25,000 in the 1990s to $400,000 in 2023. Lockheed Martin and RTX raised the price of the Javelin missile system from about $263,000 per unit just before the war to $350,700 this year. Similar price hikes took place for Patriot missiles and other weapons. And make no mistake: every time a contractor pads its profit margins, fewer weapons reach the frontlines. The greed of these defense contractors is not just costing American taxpayers; it’s killing Ukrainians. The United States needs a strong military, but we do not need a defense system that is designed to make huge profits for a handful of giant defense contractors. We do not need to spend almost a trillion dollars on the military, while half a million Americans are homeless and children go hungry. In this moment in history, it would be wise for us to remember what Dwight D Eisenhower, a former five-star general, said in his farewell address in 1961: “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” What Eisenhower said was true in 1961. It is even more true today. I will be voting against the military budget.

The nuclear energy patch is heating up and one of the names garnering attention is ( ). With a big spike in institutional ownership, Oklo stock seems like an under-the-radar stock that's worth watching. As it consolidates in a somewhat overheated space, one could reasonably expect it to hold within a range, albeit a large range. In consideration of its price-to-book ratio, if the chart drops to $15, it could be a potential addition to a portfolio. Whenever I'm thinking of things holding in a range, I lean on the trusty iron condor. As gyrations are likely to occur before the next potential rise we'll use a twist on the iron condor that will allow for wider ranges and more bullish potential. When we position with short iron condors, we attempt to collect time decay while a chart bases or settles into a new direction. As always, we assume that we don't know the direction but are able to estimate the magnitude of the move using the ATR (average true range, measured on the weekly chart). We also lean on the implied moves that market makers price in over the months ahead. , Oklo stock holds a 68 , a 7 , and a 99 for . Granted, the ratings aren't stellar but the chart and story are compelling. Let's look at a trade structure we can use for Oklo. A short iron condor consists of two spreads: a short call spread and a short put spread. Together they define a range of motion that we estimate the price action will not exceed. We'll use that same basic structure with a little twist. I'll use twice as many put spreads in this case: Why double up on the put spread? Two reasons: At this writing the credit received is $2.50 per share. This represents the maximum profit we can collect on the trade. With this kind of position, we collect a premium and as this premium erodes, we secure that revenue from the position. Risk Calculation In the current case, we are looking at a probability that the short iron condor delivers gains is more than seven times as likely. So, we make the trade on the side of probabilities, rather than the possibility of outsize gains. Because of my bullish bent, doubling up on the put spread gives me an extra $1 in premium. Yes, the risk is doubled too, but the odds are still favorable. Stock hunting using fundamental and price strength is where I firmly plant myself under the backdrop of the current economic backdrop. I use to find ideal buying opportunities in conjunction with the tools for strength seen on IBD. Now, let's identify key chart levels.

NCAA President Charlie Baker is pushing Congress to limit the types of bets gamblers can make on college athletes as the industry continues to expand, with more states legalizing sports betting in a multibillion-dollar industry that lawmakers are considering setting up minimum national standards to regulate. Thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia have legalized the practice in the six-plus years since the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, paving the way for sports betting to become the major industry it has quickly developed into. Tens of billions of dollars are wagered annually in the U.S. on American and foreign sports leagues, including college athletics. Nineteen states allow for prop bets on player performances in college athletics, like the number of points a basketball player will score or passing yards for a college quarterback. Baker said many athletes are pressured into performing in certain ways, such as a basketball player intentionally missing free throws, and subject to threats online and in person when their performance keeps a bettor from winning a wager. “There’s no doubt that the rise of sports betting has impacted the NCAA and student-athletes in a significant way, but none of the consequences are as challenging as the harassment and coercion student-athletes are experiencing,” Baker said. “Many have received death threats from bettors, and they also receive other in-person threats and accusations directed at them while leaving or coming onto the field of play.” Threats have been so pervasive at times that the NCAA had to provide one team 24/7 police security during one of its championships due to threats made by a bettor, Baker said. Johnson Bademosi, a former NFL cornerback, said sports betting being legalized has put additional pressure on athletes to perform that has negatively impacted athletes’ mental health. “Social media has enabled athletes to take control of their brands and market themselves in ways not possible for previous generations. However, it has also opened an extremely accessible avenue for threats and harassment directed toward athletes and their families alike,” Bademosi said. “Now, players are targeted by gamblers who seek insider information or pressure them to perform, not for the benefit of the team, but because the gambler is financially invested in a specific performance element of individual athletes.” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said the consequences of legalizing sports betting have already been on display, referencing the lifetime ban of former NBA player Jontay Porter for disclosing confidential information to bettors and wagering on games, including his own team to lose. Advertisements for sports betting are highly visible during sports broadcasts, displayed surrounding the field of play and through direct partnerships with professional leagues that once adamantly opposed legalizing gambling due to concerns about integrity of competition. “It is virtually impossible to watch a sporting event today without being barraged by ads encouraging you to bet or hearing from a celebrity endorser about the latest parlay you should try, and from the industry perspective, it’s a very profitable development,” Durbin said. “But at what cost to the bettor? At what cost to the sport, at what cost to the school or the athlete?” Baker’s testimony came in a broader hearing about the problems posed by the legalization of sports betting. The federal government has not instituted any guardrails for the industry, leaving states to implement their own regulations on wagering. Each state requires approved sportsbooks to provide information about problem gambling and resources to help with gambling addictions, but there is no universal federal framework for them to work under. “Maybe we need to start thinking about rules of the road,” said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. “On the gambling angle, to get this right, or it’s going to get worse and the bad actors are going to exploit more. We’re going to destroy a game that I’m fanatic over. We’re going to destroy this game because of all the other pressures that are coming in and influencing the product.” A bill introduced by Democratic Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the SAFE Bet Act, aims to address some of the issues that have come with legalized gambling. The legislation would ban sportsbooks from advertising during live events, limit the number of deposits a person can make in a limited time period, and prohibit the use of artificial intelligence to spur people to place more bets. It would also ban prop bets on student-athletes and require the surgeon general to issue a report on the public health challenges to sports betting. Other suggestions offered during the hearing included eliminating or limiting “micro-bets,” or wagers that can be placed during a game on what might happen next, such as whether an NFL team will get a first down on its next offensive possession or whether a batter will strike out in baseball. “With the use of technology and AI, the industry and its sports and media partners have turned every micro-moment in each game or event into more and more gambling action,” said Dr. Harry Levant, director of gambling policy at Northeastern University’s Public Health Advocacy Institute. “Sports have become the equivalent of a nonstop slot machine.” With only days left before the current session of Congress ends and several major bills to pass, legislation surrounding federal gambling standards will have to wait until at least next year to be considered. It’s unclear what kind of political will there is among lawmakers for implementing any national standards. Baker was also frequently put on defense for the NCAA’s policies toward transgender athletes competing in women’s athletics by Republican senators. GOP lawmakers have frequently elevated the issue after Penn swimmer Lia Thomas’ dominance of events. Earlier this year, the GOP-led House approved a bill banning transgender athletes from competing in girls’ or women’s sports in federally supported schools and colleges.WASHINGTON (AP) — A person accused of accosting U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace in a Capitol Office building pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to a misdemeanor assault charge. Witnesses told police that James McIntyre, 33, of Chicago, shook Mace's hand in an “exaggerated, aggressive” manner after approaching the South Carolina Republican in the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday evening, according to a police affidavit. Efforts to reach an attorney for McIntyre weren't immediately successful.

The Argentina forward curled in the free kick shot in the 15th minute for the first of his two goals in the team’s 6-0 rout of Brest in the Champions League on Tuesday — the team’s biggest ever away win in European competitions. “We'll keep rotating who takes the free kicks,” said Álvarez, who also found the net in the 59th. The 24-year-old had a slow start to his first season with Atletico, scoring twice in 10 matches. “It was a matter of time before we started connecting well with each other,” said Álvarez, who joined Atletico after two seasons at Manchester City. “We have to stay on this path to keep improving.” Ángel Correa also scored two goals for Atletico, with Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann adding one each. “We know that in this format of the competition we need to keep adding the three points and scoring goals," Álvarez said. "It's important to get the points and the goals.” Atletico was sitting in 13th place in the 36-team league standings. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Investor and Media Contact: Scott Young Vice President, Investor Relations and Corporate Communications [email protected]It's extraordinary how quiet nearly 50,000 people can be. Ibrox, a place of unending noise all night, fell silent five minutes from the end when Cyriel Dessers turned inside Archie Gray and looked to all the world like he was going to win it for Rangers. In that split-second, the stadium held its breath. Suddenly, it was about as boisterous as a mouse tip-toeing around a library full of an order of silent monks. Dessers did brilliantly, but not brilliantly enough. This city knows all about the goalkeeping excellence of Fraser Forster. His years at Celtic were full of stellar saves from some of the greats of Europe. The Rangers striker is hardly one of those, but the save was valuable all the same. Fair to say that a point, rather than the three they would have expected, didn't do a whole lot to put smiles on Spurs' faces, but the alternative would have been ghastly for the visitors, who probably got more than they deserved in the end. You have to imagine that Ange Postecoglou was in the ears of his Tottenham players all week, telling them of the dangers of Ibrox, warning them that there was a battle ahead. For all his dominance as Celtic manager, Postecoglou won only one of four times in this place. He knew. His players? Not a clue. They arrived like tourists lost in a hostile city. They gave the impression of a team that expected Rangers to swoon at the feet of a monied Premier League side. Languid, lethargic, lazy in possession. And ransacked, constantly. The terrific Nicolas Raskin mugged Rodrigo Bentancur early on and you took a note. Nice moment that got the crowd going, but could Rangers keep up that work rate and physicality? For how long could they impose their intensity? Then Pedro Porro was done by Jefte and Raskin, again, brushed off Yves Bissouma. Spurs were nowhere near the pitch of it. They looked weak. Soft. Unprepared. Rangers looked ready. Whatever Spurs thought Rangers were going to throw at them, aggression was guaranteed. Quality could be not be banked on - they had plenty of it as it turned out - but passion and heart absolutely could. On the touchline, Postecoglou was going potty, somehow managing to gesticulate wildly in six different directions at the same time in the kind of fluid movement that was utterly beyond the players he was berating. Ibrox rocked as the visitors toiled. Radu Dragusin passed one into touch. Timo Werner gave the ball away with a staggering consistency. Brennan Johnson was easily dispossessed, then started blowing as if already tired. Barely half an hour had gone. Tottenham were in trouble. Little moments had the home fans in raptures. James Maddison tried an outside of the right foot cross-field ball to Werner, but Vaclav Cerny intercepted with ease. Paraphrasing and removing the expletives, the general reaction from Rangers people was: 'Save the showboating for down south, son'. Raskin and his band of marauders kept snapping, kept living in the face of their counterparts. Werner was here in body but not in heart. He became a mistake machine in the face of Rangers pressure. Johnson, the same. Got it, got hustled off it, then got taken off, as did Werner. Kulusevski was the break-class–in-case-of-emergency replacement at the break and he delivered. But before he did, Rangers made them suffer a little more. Two minutes into the new half, James Tavernier, the captain emerging from a grim patch of form, did outstandingly to run away from Johnson and curl one into the path of Igamane. The striker, wholly unconvincing until recently, finished with aplomb. It was deserved. Rangers had the better of it on all fronts to that point and now they had the lead to show for it. Maybe Spurs couldn't believe what they were seeing. And maybe they weren't alone. Rangers have been improving of late, but theirs has been a soft recovery. The characters who were calling for the head of their manager, Philippe Clement, only a matter of weeks ago had been silenced, but it was an uneasy truce, always liable to flare up again when things go wrong. This Rangers had not been seen for a while. Belligerent, but also good on the ball. Pacy, threatening, solid enough at the back even after they suffered the huge loss of their best defender, John Souttar, after little more than half an hour. And this Ibrox was a force, too. Loud, deliriously happy, thunderously angry - an unsettling wall of noise. All the while, Postecoglou waved and flapped and turned away in fury when one of his players - many of his players - went backwards. What he had was a cavalry to call on. Kuluseveski was a game-changer. Dominic Solanke was a big presence, too, in the salvage job. They were both involved in the equaliser, Kulusevski finishing. Postecoglou barely moved. Maybe his heart was singing. Maybe not. It was frenetic and fractious in the 15 minutes that followed. Solanke came close, but Tavernier came up with a big defensive moment to deny him. The Dessers chance was it. That was the moment, or could have been. Forster got them out of jail, but Postecoglou's trial goes on. One win in eight is an uncomfortable case for the defence. For Rangers, a League Cup final to come at the weekend against Postecoglou's old and firing team. A few weeks back, that final looked like a bit of a formality for Celtic. Now? If Rangers can build on the best of this they'll have something to say, for sure.

Greenland is an island located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans and is a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump’s post says. While Trump hasn’t elaborated on his motivation to purchase Greenland, the territory has access to valuable natural resources and houses a large U.S. military base . Its location also provides access to the Arctic Ocean from the Atlantic. Trump first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, during his first administration. Denmark’s prime minister called purchase discussions “absurd,” prompting Trump to cancel a planned trip to the country. Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton penned an op-ed in 2019 saying that acquiring the territory would provide a safeguard against foreign threats like what the U.S. faced during World War II and the Cold War. After Trump expressed renewed interest in Greenland on Dec. 22, Google search data shows there’s been a spike in searches about Trump’s statement and Greenland, including whether the territory is for sale. THE QUESTION Is Greenland for sale? THE SOURCES THE ANSWER No, Greenland is not for sale. WHAT WE FOUND Greenland is not for sale, Múte Egede, the territory’s prime minister, said on Facebook . “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our years-long fight for freedom,” Egede wrote in Danish, translated into English via Google Translate. “However, we must continue to be open to cooperation and trade with the whole world, especially with our neighbours. Since all cooperation and trade cannot go through Denmark. All cooperation with us must be based on our values. Because at all times we must not squabble about our country,” Egede wrote. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, according to the Danish national government website . It has its own government, managing most domestic affairs, while Denmark oversees foreign policy, defense and monetary matters. In 2009, Greenland's residents voted for increased autonomy , which gave the island its own parliament and independent leadership, but it is still in part controlled by Denmark. According to Greenland’s Self-Government Act in 2009 , Greenland has the option to declare full independence if it chooses to in the future. First, in order to do that, the decision regarding Greenland’s independence must be brought before the people. Greenland has a population of roughly 56,000. If Greenland’s population decides to move forward, negotiations begin between Danish and Greenland governing bodies. An agreement has to be made between the two, and if reached, Greenland’s parliament has to approve and then draft a resolution for independence. The agreement for independence ends with Denmark’s parliament approving the independence. Greenland would then become an independent nation. In response to Trump’s Dec. 22 Truth Social post, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told ABC News the “Danish Government is looking forward to welcoming the new American ambassador. And the Government is looking forward to working with the new administration.” “In a complex security political situation as the one we currently experience, transatlantic cooperation is crucial. As far as statements about Greenland, the Prime Minister's Office has no comments other than reference to what was stated by the Premier of Greenland about Greenland not being for sale, but open for cooperation.” VERIFY reached out to the Danish prime minister’s office for comment, but did not hear back at the time of publication. Danish parliament member Rasmus Jarlov rejected Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland in a post on X. “Greenland is Danish. It has been since 1380 and it will continue to be. This is undisputed, signed in rock in treaties and not open for negotiation. At all. Dictators threaten to take control over other countries' territory. Free democratic countries do not,” Jarlov said. The U.S’s interest in Greenland did not begin with Trump. In 1946, the U.S. considered proposals to pay Denmark $100 million in gold bars for Greenland or trade oil-rich land in Alaska for some of Greenland’s territory, according to the Associated Press . Even though the sale did not go through, the United States ended up with the military bases it wanted anyway. The U.S. Air Force currently maintains two bases in Greenland, Thule and Sondestrom. Construction of the Thule base in 1952 was made possible by a defense treaty signed by the U.S. and Denmark in 1951 . Originally designed as a refueling base for long-range bombing missions, it has been a ballistic missile early warning site and satellite telemetry station since 1961. Sondestrom’s mission is in support of the base at Thule. The Associated Press contributed to this report. OTTAWA—The Liberal government’s latest gun-control plans have elicited a mixed reaction from advocacy groups as Canada’s political leaders marked the 35th anniversary of the Montreal massacre that left 14 women dead. Justin Trudeau’s Liberals on Thursday that would see 324 additional makes and models of “assault-style” weapons, and their variants, added to its list of prohibited firearms. In 2020, the Liberals announced a ban on more than 1,500 makes and models of firearms, a number that has now surpassed 2,000 due to the identification of new variants. An amnesty period will be in place until Oct. 30, 2025 to protect businesses and owners who have acquired prohibited firearms lawfully. Among other measures, Ottawa also said that the pilot program of the first stage of the government’s delayed buyback program is underway, and that it will open up to all businesses, though not yet individuals, in the coming days. The Trudeau government announced the 2020 ban less than two weeks after the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history, in which 22 people in rural Nova Scotia lost their lives over the course of the rampage. But it was Montreal’s massacre on Dec. 6, 1989 — when an antifeminist gunman killed 14 women and injured 13 others — that forever altered the gun-control debate in Canada. On Friday, the leaders of all of the country’s major federal parties marked the 35th anniversary of the shooting and Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Trudeau said those gunned down in Montreal were “talented students, beloved daughters and sisters, and Canada’s future.” But he also used his statement to tout his government’s gun-control initiatives — including this week’s measures. The prime minister also said each victim lost their lives “simply because they were women,” a phrase Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also used in a statement of his own. “As we remember the victims of this tragedy and honour the resilient survivors, Conservatives vow to always defend our country’s promise against the forces that threaten it,” Poilievre’s statement read. The NDP’s Jagmeet Singh — whose party has yet to weigh in publicly on the Liberals’ latest steps — also put a political spin on his remarks, calling the tragedy “a heinous act” while listing his party’s efforts to address intimate partner and gender-based violence. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, meanwhile, wrote in French that politicians have a duty to ensure violence such as that seen decades ago is never again repeated. On Thursday, the federal Conservatives were among the harshest critics of the Liberals’ measures, with public safety critic Raquel Dancho accusing Trudeau of ushering in a “crime wave” in Canada and unfairly targeting “lawful and vetted hunters, sport shooters, and Indigenous Peoples who safely and legally use firearms as they have done for generations.” The National Firearms Association said the expanded list is “nothing more than a last-ditch attempt to stoke fear and rally ideological support after months of languishing in the polls.” The National Association of Women and the Law, on the other hand, applauded the move. The organization, whose director of legal affairs, Suzanne Zaccour, joined the Liberals during the government’s announcement, on Friday called on all federal party leaders “to work together to ensure the permanent and full implementation of these measures to preserve the safety of women and children today and for generations to come.”
