US coach Emma Hayes admits to anthem uncertainty ahead of England stalemateBOZEMAN — Hunter harvest rates in southwestern Montana were mixed during the general deer and elk hunting season, according to data gathered by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks biologists. Mild weather during much of the general season made it challenging for hunters to find game at some lower elevations. The general season was held over five weeks and six weekends from Oct. 26 through Dec. 1. During that time, FWP staff operated game check stations at various times and locations in southwest Montana, including stations in Alder, Cameron, Canyon Ferry, Divide, Gallatin Canyon, Silver City and Toston. Collectively, they met with 6,966 hunters who harvested 48 white-tailed deer, 168 mule deer and 406 elk. Biologists use check stations to collect data on hunter participation and success, as well as the species, sex and age class of the animals harvested. Check station data captures a portion of hunting activity on weekends in specific areas. Hunter numbers and harvest rates can be influenced by weather, changes in hunting regulations from one season to another, and other factors. Biologists also rely on information collected through hunter harvest phone surveys each year. The Alder check station was open on the first, third and sixth weekends of the general season. Over those three weekends wildlife staff met with 812 hunters who collectively harvested 16 white-tailed deer, 35 mule deer and 88 elk. The hunter harvest rate for the final weekend was average at 21%, an increase from the 9.7% harvest rate over opening weekend. Biologists operated a check station at Canyon Ferry on the first and final weekends of the general season. They met with 338 hunters who harvested six white-tailed deer, 11 mule deer and 16 elk. Hunter harvest was 3.9% on opening weekend and 8.3% on the final weekend. The Cameron check station was open each weekend during the general season. Wildlife staff there met with 2,935 hunters who harvested 14 white-tailed deer, 60 mule deer and 192 elk over the six weekends. Hunter harvest rates ranged from 6.5% on Nov. 2-3 to 10.6% on Nov. 23-24. Overall harvest numbers were average for elk, above average for mule deer and below average for white-tailed deer. Snow levels were high enough to make high-country travel difficult for hunters, but not enough to concentrate elk on winter ranges. This, combined with above-average numbers of hunters, meant that individual hunter harvest rates in this area were below average. The Divide check station was also open each weekend during the general season. Biologists there met with 1,406 hunters who harvested six white-tailed deer, 43 mule deer and 63 elk over the six weekends. Hunter harvest rates ranged from 6.4% on Nov. 16-17 to 13.4% over the previous weekend. This area also saw relatively mild temperatures and snowfall, with minimal elk movement during the general season. The overall hunter harvest rate at this station was 8.7% this year, up from 7.8% in 2023 but still below the 10-year average of 9.3%. The Gallatin check station operated during the first, second and sixth weekends of the general season. Wildlife staff there met with 500 hunters who harvested one white-tailed deer, five mule deer and 20 elk. Hunter harvest rates ranged from 4.4% over opening weekend to 6.5% the following weekend. Overall, this season had average numbers of hunters and mule deer harvested and below-average numbers of elk harvested. The Silver City check station operated on opening and closing weekends of the general season, with hunter harvest rates of 4.4 and 3%, respectively. Staff met with 902 hunters who harvested one white-tailed deer, eight mule deer and 27 elk over the two weekends. The Toston check station was open on Nov. 9, which brought 73 hunters and a harvest rate of 8.3%. Those hunters harvested six mule deer.

Tasmania’s $1 billion salmon industry will supply thousands of Australian households this Christmas, its fresh and smoked fish fillets a relatively cheap alternative to many seafood options. But what is the environmental cost? Salmon farming in Tasmania. Credit: Adam Gibson Tasmania’s big three salmon producers – foreign-owned companies Huon, Tassal and Petuna – promote the industry as sustainable, with low environmental impacts. But the industry’s critics warn it is poorly regulated, environmentally harmful and expanding at an unsustainable pace. Seafood shoppers face a difficult task in deciding who to trust, especially with political leaders gearing up for an election stoush over the future of the industry. Fishy issues Salmon farms have been blamed for environmental degradation around the Tasmanian coastline, antibiotics leaking into the food chain, algal blooms, dead seals and introduction of hundreds of thousands of escapee fish into the environment. However, Salmon Tasmania chief executive Luke Martin, who heads the peak body for the industry, said the farms were a good fit for the Tasmanian environment. “We know millions of Australians will have salmon on the menu this Christmas lunch, and by doing so, they are supporting the livelihoods of 5000 Australians living across regional Tasmanian communities,” Martin said. “Salmon is also a responsibly sourced seafood farmed under the highest environmental regulatory conditions of any farmed protein in Australia. “Aquaculture also eases demand pressure on our wild fishing stocks.” A salmon farm in Tasmania. Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto Salmon Tasmania’s website states the regulations strike a balance between growing a vital protein source, which is produced with minimal environmental impacts due to careful management. The industry states its physical footprint on the water is 4000 hectares, compared to 426 million for agriculture on land. “Tasmanian waterways are not, and never can be, overrun by salmon pens,” it said. Green gripes However, environmental groups paint a different picture. “The industry puts into the sea more pollutants than all of Tasmania’s sewage outfalls combined,” said Australian Marine Conservation Society sustainable seafood program manager Adrian Meder. The organisation’s GoodFish sustainable seafood guide told shoppers to reject Tasmanian farmed salmon this Christmas, warning that the huge expansion of the industry’s footprint “could lead to high environmental impacts”. Wild fish kilometres from salmon farms have been found with antibiotic residue in their flesh. There are strict health guidelines around food containing antibiotics, due to the potential for uncontrolled use to lead to the creation of so-called superbugs in the human population. Farmed salmon are sometimes treated with antibiotics to prevent infections that can kill fish or hurt production levels. The Salmon Tasmania website said only its veterinarians can prescribe antibiotics. Meder said nutrient-rich salmon waste is churned out from salmon pens, disrupting the marine ecosystem. It has been linked to algal blooms that have, in some instances, clogged inshore reefs in several locations near farms. A Tasmanian parliamentary inquiry completed in 2022 warned that the industry’s rapid growth had been facilitated by the state government, which is “an enthusiastic promoter and supporter of the industry”. It included several scientific expert submissions that warned about algal outbreaks and issued a recommendation for “ceasing operations in sensitive, sheltered and biodiverse areas” – a call Meder said had been ignored. Salmon Tasmania rejected these claims. “We do not know who the Australian Marine Conservation Society is, what their agenda is, or who funds them, but we are very confident in the sustainability of our operations across Tasmania,” Martin said. Harbouring doubts Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s west coast is not the main source of salmon supply, producing around 13 per cent of annual production. But it is where the most controversial leases are, because it is the only home for the incredibly rare and ancient relic, the Maugean skate, of which there are only 40 to 120 adults left in the wild. Salmon farming began there in the late 1980s, and all three of Tasmania’s salmon companies, Tassal, Huon and Petuna, operate in the waterway. They have recently scaled back the size of their operations as concerns about the industry’s impact on the critically endangered fish grew. The federal government’s threatened species committee said in August the best way to save the endangered fish was to eliminate, or at least dramatically cut back on, salmon farming in its habitat. The committee said there was a “significant correlation” between low oxygen levels and an increase in salmon farming. Farmed fish suck up a lot of the oxygen in the water, while fish food and faeces that enter the water via the salmon pens feed oxygen-consuming bacteria. Salmon farmers are trialling mechanical systems that push micro bubbles of oxygen to the bottom of the harbour. “No fish farming should ever pose an extinction threat to an endangered species, and no other fish farming industry in Australia does,” Meder said. “It’s actually really easy to do fish farming better than this.” Salmon Tasmania has warned that scaling back the industry could cut the 260 local jobs that it generates and claimed that multiple factors affected water quality, not just farming, including climate change and disruption from hydroelectric dams to river flows into Macquarie Harbour. Political fallout Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has on her desk a request from environment groups to revoke licences for farming in Macquarie Harbour, but a decision is not expected before an election due by May. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has accused the government of seeking to shut down the salmon industry. “The government’s prepared to hang the local community out to dry,” he said this month. Macquarie Harbour is in the Braddon electorate, which the Liberal Party won from Labor at the 2019 election. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has hopes to win Braddon back. He visited on December 14 and declared he would not pre-empt Plibersek’s legal responsibilities as environment minister, but nevertheless guaranteed the industry would continue under his leadership. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visits salmon farms in Macquarie Harbour, on Tasmania’s west coast. “As long as I’m prime minister, there will be support for jobs here in Tasmania because I understand how important it is for the Tasmanian economy,” Albanese declared. Plibersek was absent from his visit. However, Plibersek said on December 19 that she welcomed the prime minister’s presence in Tasmania and echoed his support for the industry. But it was far harder to interpret her position on the future of the industry, which she said must be weighed against environmental concerns. “We know that the salmon industry is important for local jobs in Tasmania, but we also know that Tasmanians really value their natural environment ... Ponzi and Pyramid Scheme s These scams promise ridiculously high returns with little effort. You’re encouraged to “invest” in a project and recruit others to do the same. The money paid to early participants usually comes from new investors, not actual profits. Once recruitment slows, the scheme collapses, and the scammers vanish with your money. If you hear words like “guaranteed returns” or “recruit your friends,” run the other way. 4. Fake Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) Scammers often create flashy websites and whitepapers to hype up fake crypto projects, luring investors with the promise of a “groundbreaking” cryptocurrency. People invest, and once enough funds are collected, the scammers disappear without a trace. Poor-country politicians performatively staged a “walk-out,” while rich nations ended up promising a climate slush fund of $300 billion a year. This extravagant pay-off is unlikely to happen, just like previous pledges made over three decades of climate summits. While virtually every summit has promised to cut emissions, they’ve increased almost every year, and 2024 reached a new high. In 2021, the world promised to phase down coal. Since then, global coal consumption has only gone up. Carbon emissions continue to grow because cheap, reliable power, mostly from fossil fuels, drives economic growth. Wealthy countries like the United States and European Union members have started to cut emissions, but the rest of the world remains focused on eradicating poverty. The rich world has tried to bribe the poor to agree to emission cuts, mainly by rebranding existing development aid. Unsurprisingly, rich countries paying lip service to the pay-offs has led to poor countries paying lip service to the climate pageantry, while actually driving economic growth with even more fossil fuels. Green campaigners insist that the global transition away from fossil fuels is unstoppable, yet over the past decade, fossil fuel energy has increased twice as much as green energy. Meanwhile, green politicians insist solar and wind are cheaper than fossil fuels, but this is only true when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. In reality, such renewables need massive subsidies and redistributive taxes, which has driven up electricity costs in the EU by 50 percent since 2000. The reality is that most countries don’t want to emulate virtue-signaling nations like Germany, which has hiked energy prices, sacrificed industry, and given up on economic growth for the sake of green energy. Despite economic hardships like its first two-year recession, on current trends it will take Germany half a millennium to entirely stop using fossil fuels. Recent years have seen politicians promising feverishly to cut even more carbon—but the election of Donald Trump, who campaigned on pulling out of the Paris Agreement and scrapping renewable energy projects, means this bubble is bursting. And these troubles began even before Trump’s election. Despite an exuberant stock market in recent years, clean energy shares have lost half their value. After the US election, they immediately tumbled further, based on the expectation that subsidy spigots will be turned off in the US. The “net zero” green agenda, based on massive subsidies and expensive legislation, will likely cost $27 trillion per year across the century, making it utterly unattractive to most nations. Trump will dump these policies. Without huge transfers of wealth, China, India, and many other growing, developing countries will in effect disavow these policies, too. This leaves a ragtag group mostly from the EU, which can scarcely afford their own policies but have no ability to pay off everyone else. Fortunately, there is a much better and cheaper way to tackle climate change. Climate economists have long shown that investment in green energy research and development is the most efficient approach. For just a tiny fraction of current, inefficient green spending, we could quintuple global green innovation to drive down the price of new technologies like better batteries and fourth-generation nuclear. Innovating the price of green energy below fossil fuels is the only way to get everyone to switch. This approach can even help convince policymakers who are skeptical about climate change because they see the vast potential in cheaper energy. A dose of realism could also end the elites’ singular preoccupation with climate. The rich world faces many challenges: rapid aging, an urgent need for pension reform, growing healthcare costs, flatlining education results, and more military threats. The trillions wasted on current climate policies could be better spent. For the world’s poorer half, problems of poverty, hunger, curable infectious diseases, and corruption need more attention. Instead of the immense, and mostly poorly spent, climate bribes, this money could boost development across the global south. Climate campaigners can spend the next four years doubling down on policies that have failed for the past three decades and protesting the Trump Administration for its policy shift. Over the course of this case, 12 new jails and additional barracks were constructed, alongside substantial improvements in facilities and prisoner rehabilitation programmes. According to a press release issued by the Punjab Prisons Department, the court's directives prompted the Punjab Prisons Department to implement key measures, including rehabilitation programmes for drug addicts, improved healthcare services, the introduction of family rooms in four prisons for conjugal rights of long-term inmates, and vocational training initiatives to develop marketable skills among prisoners. A detailed report on these efforts was submitted to the court. In light of international standards and constitutional protections, the court issued several recommendations to further reform the prison system: The court emphasised the urgent need for dedicated women’s prisons in Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi to ensure that female prisoners’ rights are adequately protected. It recommended the establishment of open prisons with minimum security to assist long-term prisoners in reintegrating into society during the final year of their sentence. Implementation of an Electronic Prisoner File Management System was proposed to improve transparency and operational efficiency in prison management, as aligned with Rule 6 of the UN standards. The court stressed the digitisation and integration of court, prison, and prosecution records to streamline processes and reduce delays. Additionally, it suggested using video link technology for trials to address logistical challenges. Recognising the challenges faced by prison staff, the court called for specialised training to handle dangerous, mentally disturbed, or self-harming inmates. It also advocated for raising prison staff salaries and grades to match those of other criminal justice departments, such as the police. Mental Health Facilities: To address the needs of mentally ill prisoners, the court recommended establishing psychiatric wards or independent mental health facilities in Rawalpindi and Multan, as per the Supreme Court’s guidelines in the Safia Bano case (PLD 2021 SC 488). The court’s observations have set a strong precedent for aligning Punjab’s prison system with international human rights standards. These reforms aim to enhance efficiency, transparency, and the humane treatment of prisoners, ensuring their rights under the Constitution are upheld. “Barbenheimer” was a phenomenon impossible to manufacture. But, more than a year later, that hasn’t stopped people from trying to make “Glicked” — or even “Babyratu” — happen. The counterprogramming of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in July 2023 hit a nerve culturally and had the receipts to back it up. Unlike so many things that begin as memes, it transcended its online beginnings. Instead of an either-or, the two movies ultimately complemented and boosted one another at the box office. And ever since, moviegoers, marketers and meme makers have been trying to recreate that moment, searching the movie release schedule for odd mashups and sending candidates off into the social media void. This weekend is perhaps the closest approximation yet as the Broadway musical adaptation “Wicked” opens Friday against the chest-thumping sword-and-sandals epic “Gladiator II.” Two big studio releases (Universal and Paramount), with one-name titles, opposite tones and aesthetics and big blockbuster energy — it was already halfway there before the name game began: “Wickiator,” “Wadiator,” “Gladwick” and even the eyebrow raising “Gladicked” have all been suggested. “'Glicked' rolls off the tongue a little bit more,” actor Fred Hechinger said at the New York screening of “Gladiator II” this week. “I think we should all band around ‘Glicked.’ It gets too confusing if you have four or five different names for it.” As with “Barbenheimer," as reductive as it might seem, “Glicked” also has the male/female divide that make the fan art extra silly. One is pink and bright and awash in sparkles, tulle, Broadway bangers and brand tie-ins; The other is all sweat and sand, blood and bulging muscles. Both films topped Fandango’s most anticipated holiday movie survey, where 65% of respondents said that they were interested in the “Glicked” double feature. As the massive tour inches toward its final three shows in Vancouver early next month, feeding Swifties’ insatiable appetite has become a nightly tradition for a handful of live stream hosts based all over the world. They act as ringleaders for tens of thousands of viewers witnessing Swift’s constantly evolving show through unofficial channels. “I never saw it being as big as it is,” said Tess Bohne, one of the personalities credited as a pioneer of the Swift live streams. “There is a big idea of community (and) being present without being there.” Broadcasting unauthorized concert live streams on social platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook isn’t an entirely new phenomenon, but it’s one that’s been amplified with Swift’s tour. As their popularity grows, the streams are sparking conversations about copyright law and the delicate balance between protecting intellectual property and allowing listeners to embrace their fandom. “We’ve gone beyond art being a one-way conversation from the artist to the audience,” said Jay Kerr-Wilson, an IP lawyer and co-leader of Fasken’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications Group in Ottawa. “Copyright owners, generally speaking, are being more flexible and they’re not necessarily (thinking) black-and-white.” Representatives for the singer did not respond to requests for comment. For fans, the lines are already blurred. Bohne got wrapped up in the Swift live-streaming phenomenon nearly two years ago after she attended the second night of the Eras Tour, in Glendale, Ariz., and found herself consumed by the experience for days afterward. “(Often) you go to a concert and you’re like, ‘That was great, let’s move on with my life,’” the 33-year-old explained in a video call from Salt Lake City. “But there was something different. It was like, ‘No, that wasn’t enough. I’m not done.’” Eager to relive the high she felt, Bohne chased down the TikTok profiles of fellow Swifties streaming other stops on the tour. With little technical experience, she began rebroadcasting their videos, with credit, on her own TikTok profile. She would place an iPad playing their feed in front of her phone’s camera, and then swap it out with her other iPad when she found a user with a better angle of the concert. The crude setup initially drew a few thousand viewers, she said, and with more effort put into the productionher audience has grown to 100,000 to 200,000 during peak moments. Since her initial broadcast, Bohne estimates she’s streamed more than 110 of Swift’s concerts in a split-screen format, streaming the concert in one corner and munching on snacks in the other while discussing all things Swift with a chat room of strangers. Some fans donate cash, and her social media status has helped attract influencer partnerships. But the stay-at-home mom of three children said this is primarily a labour of love. Bohne is credited by many of her contemporaries as the one who inspired them to take a shot at hosting their own Eras Tour with live commentary. “A lot of people say it’s like religion for them,” explained Lucas Chalub, a Twitch streamer and longtime Swiftie. Chalub first experimented with hosting streams in August 2023. Rumours swirled that the singer might announce the release date for one of her re-recorded albums on stage in Los Angeles, so many Swifties sought out live feeds, which included his impromptu setup that night. “A lot of people joined,” remembered the 27-year-old sports journalist from Argentina. “That’s the first night that I said, ‘Why not do this every night?’” Chalub said he usually draws on streams from 10 to 15 concertgoers who are often aware their recordings might get picked up by the streaming hosts. Many bring power banks to recharge their devices and sometimes a backup phone. “We are not the heroes that people think we are,” Chalub added of his fellow streamers, crediting fans on the ground who do their work pro bono. “The real heroes are the people in the venue spending — or wasting — their time trying to live stream for us instead of enjoying the show.” The legality around live streaming Swift’s concerts is murky. In the simplest terms, the rebroadcasting of copyrighted music without a licence isn’t allowed, and platforms such as YouTube and TikTok have sometimes shut down live feeds mid-stream at the behest of record labels. It happened to Ammir Shar, a 25-year-old streamer from Blackpool, U.K., who saw his YouTube feed for the fourth Toronto concert yanked down while the show was in progress. Hosts say they worry about racking up too many takedown notices, which can risk permanently shutting down their channels. Usually after a live stream ends, they delete the footage from platforms like YouTube. However, they say attempts to silence them won’t amount to much. When one streamer falls, sometimes two others turn up. Copyright owners are still grappling with that perspective, especially when unsanctioned live streams can impact other financial stakes, said Kerr-Wilson. In Swift’s case, she sold the streaming rights to her “The Eras Tour” film to Disney Plus for US$75 million. Arguably, the lawyer suggested, a company might take issue with similar options on the market, such as a live stream. But even that seems to be an evolving conversation. “People have realized that social media and user-generated content isn’t the enemy, and, in fact, can be a powerful way to engage with fans and to be part of the conversation,” he said. “I think the trend is going to continue.” While Swift hasn’t publicly said much about the streams, several streamers believe she is aware of them. They also argue the vast majority of people tuning into their feeds already have an investment in Swift’s success. Last November, a group of technologically savvy Swifties launched Swift Alert, a phone app that sends out alerts for the highlights of each Eras Tour show. Inside the app, the creators also launched a game called Mastermind — named after a Swift song, of course — where fans can win prizes by guessing which of Swift’s rotating selection of outfits she’ll wear for each “era” of her performance. Using Swift Alert in tandem with the live streams, many fans tune in for the standout moments of the three-hour concert. “A lot of people compare it to fantasy football,” Shah said. “This kind of stuff brings us closer together.” With the Eras Tour set to end in Vancouver on Dec. 8, many live streamers say they’re uncertain how the future looks. Recently, Bohne experimented with a live stream from pop singer Meghan Trainor’s concert to see if there’s similar interest. While it was enjoyable, she said the experience wasn’t quite the same. Others have started streaming Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Tour. They say her shows are closest to Swift’s because Carpenter is a natural at witty banter, performs nightly surprise songs and changes up her outfits. “I’ve considered doing a few other (musicians, but they) are more like normal concerts — the artist on the stage with a microphone in one outfit, just singing their songs,” said Shah. “It’s not something that people at home will be like, ‘What outfit is she going to wear?’” Some wonder how live streaming will look without the intrigue of Swift’s tour. Michael Chandler has insisted that he didn’t break any rules during his controversial defeat to Charles Oliveira earlier this month. The lightweight stars rematched at Madison Square Garden in the co-main event of UFC 309 , with Oliveira coming out on top after a five round battle. There was no issue with the decision, but Chandler’s late onslaught saw him throw a number of elbows that were believed to be illegal. At one point the former Bellator champion managed to drop Oliveira towards the end of the fight, and it was widely believed that the shots he threw after the fact were not allowed. I have worked as a professor for almost 30 years at two Ivy League institutions -- the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University. Ivy League institutions epitomize the Ivory Tower. We imagine that professors and students discuss rarefied subjects while being disconnected to the reality on the ground. However, I wholeheartedly reject this version of academia. Two weeks ago, I had the immense pleasure of organizing a K-pop conference at Yale University titled "K-pop Production and Consumption: Conversations among Industry Professionals, Social Scientists, and Humanists." My co-organizer was Yale postdoctoral fellow Dr. Lee Won-seok, who happens to be a former drummer in the K-pop industry who worked with acts like Shinhwa and Lee Hyo-ri. The conference was sponsored by multiple units at Yale -- the Council on East Asian Studies to the Institution for Social and Policy Studies, Kempf Fund at the MacMillan Center, and the Yale’s Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration. This is a sign of the relevance of K-pop to numerous academic centers at Yale. My vision was to introduce academics who study K-pop to people that actually work in the industry. For the panelists, we welcomed RBW’s Kim Hyung-kyu, who helped to produce Beast, Mamamoo, Pentagon, G(I)-dle, Oneus, Onewe, Young Posse, and so forth. Next, we had Kim Su-bin, a former idol of the group Say Yes and current songwriter, producer, topliner and CEO of Aiming Music. He has produced almost 400 songs for groups such as Twice, EXO, Super Junior, SF9 and Astro. We also welcomed Dahae Choi, creative director at Hitfire Productions AB in Sweden, and who has an extensive career in music publishing and forming some of the first song camps. Finally, we welcomed Jay Kim, a former employee in PR at a major K-pop entertainment company and currently a K-pop journalist. We invited them to participate along with academics in Sociology, Ethnomusicology, East Asian Studies, Korean Studies, Theatre Arts, English and Classics. We gathered at Yale University for two wonderful days, and everyone had a great time. What was so special was that everyone there was serious about K-pop -- we are all fans, producers and/or consumers of it. Also, we didn’t have to defend its importance to anyone at the conference. We all felt pure joy and happiness throughout the conference -- I don’t know if it was because we all loved music or if we just liked each other. There were so many unique moments. First, we enjoyed welcome messages from five idols/groups including Say My Name, Purple Kiss, Young Posse, Jae-Joong of JYJ and Yonghoon of Onewe. These have been posted on YouTube if you’re interested. Faculty and students learned what it was like to be an idol and the rigorous testing and training that trainees endure. Who knew that trainees at one company had to write monthly book reports? We also learned about various methods for computing the allocation of song royalties. Industry professionals seemed fascinated that professors and Ph.D. students were spending time studying K-pop. In the session, “Fandoms,” we heard about Korean versus international fandoms from professor Mathieu Berbiguier of Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Stephanie Choi of Suny Buffalo talked about how the activities of female fans are a direct response to gender inequities in Korea. We learned about performing materialization and affective labor from Professor Areum Jeong of Arizona State University. She also talked about fan meetings with Taeyong of NCT Dream. In the session titled, “Sounds,” I talked about the link between K-pop and 1980s New Wave Music. Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Michigan Sunhong Kim, previously a professional "gugak" (traditional Korean music) musician, presented her paper on how Suga of BTS uses traditional Korean instrumentation and imagery in "Daechwita" as a commentary on military history during Park Chung-hee’s regime and beyond. We heard about the use of autotune and vocoders in Ateez songs from Professor Donna Kwon, an Ethnomusicology professor at the University of Kentucky. The panel on “Past and Future” featured Dr. Yanxiao He of Tsinghua University whose work ties Classics to K-pop more broadly, and specifically to BTS’s “Dionysus.” We learned about how computational social scientists analyze data on social media platform X to examine the sway BTS carries in shaping the online conversation about discrimination against Asian Americans from Dr. AJ Alvero of Cornell University. Next, we heard fascinating papers by professor Hye Won Kim of Kennesaw State University about the production of K-pop. She is unique in that she was a pop singer and now a professor. Ph.D. candidate Lee So-yoon from The University of Chicago talked about the proliferation of hagwons that offer credentialing to adults who want to work in the K-pop industry -- not as idols, but in production and support roles. Finally, we learned about K-pop markets. Professor Kim Sung-min of Hokkaido University described the reception of K-pop in Japan and how it reflects Japan-Korea relations. Professor Youjeong Oh of the University of Texas, Austin, described how tourism based on BTS has brought fans to Korea. One of the most memorable highlights was during our last reception, where we all participated in a sing-a-long. Hye Won Kim (professionally known as Hey) performed her hit song, “Je T’aime” with Kim Hyung-kyu; Kim Su-bin and Kim Hyung-kyu performed a “freestyle” song -- meaning that they made it up on the spot. Finally, the Korean participants sang “Forever with You” by Lee Moon-sae. Hye Won Kim recorded it and sent it to Lee (apparently they are friends!) on the spot. Shockingly, he responded to her and expressed his happiness at seeing it. I tried to explain to my American friends this was as if we sang “Candle in the Wind” at a party and then someone at the party who is a friend of Elton John’s texts the video to him, and then he immediately responds. This was truly surreal and magical. If we think of all the groups who were mentioned during the conference or played during our lunch breaks, I think we covered all the generations from Seo Taiji, H.O.T., S.E.S., 2NE1, Girls Generation, Beast, TVXQ, Super Junior, Big Bang, EXO, BTS, GOT7, Twice, iKON, Seventeen, Pentagon, Brave Girls, NCT 127, Ateez, Stray Kids, G(I)-dle, TXT, Enhyphen, NewJeans, Zerobaseone, and Young Posse. Still, how memorable is it that we ended with a song by Lee Moon-sae, who debuted in 1978. Not bad for a two-day conference in Connecticut, right? Seahawks safety Coby Bryant said earlier this week he had his “fingers crossed" that he might avoid punishment from the NFL for his celebration following a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown last Sunday that keyed Seattle’s 16-6 win over Arizona. It wasn’t to be as the NFL revealed Saturday that Bryant was indeed fined $6,594 for what was termed unsportsmanlike conduct for “obscene gestures” for his backward dive into the end zone accompanied by a little, uh, extracurricular activity that paid homage to former Seahawk Marshawn Lynch’s trademark move. There were no other fines levied from the game. In getting fined Bryant also found paid a small tribute to Lynch — Lynch was fined $11,050 following his dive-and-grab celebrating his “Beast Quake II’’ run against Arizona in 2014. Bryant also got better news from the league earlier in the week when he was named as the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week. Bryant joked after the game that maybe Lynch would help him pay his fine. Ultimately, the Seahawks will likely consider it a small price to pay for what a play that may turn out to be as pivotal of the season. The play came on a fourth down with Arizona threatening to cut into Seattle’s 7-3 lead midway through the third quarter. The TD made it 13-3 and gave the Seahawks the breathing room they needed to win the game and move into a tie for first place with the Cardinals. Fine amounts are determined via a formula agreed to jointly by the NFL and the NFLPA and affirmed in the bargaining agreement between the two. Fines for games the previous week are revealed every Saturday. The NFL explains the fines as necessary to enforce “the league’s and the union’s expectations for players to conduct themselves in a way that honors the sport and respects the game, themselves, their fellow players, the fans and the league. The rules are intended to protect the players from unnecessary risk, promote player safety and emphasize sportsmanship and respect of teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans.’’ As explained on the league’s website, “fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.’’ Hall, Okada elevated from practice squad The Seahawks elevated quarterback Jaren Hall and safety Ty Okada from the practice squad ahead of Sunday's game against the New York Jets. Okada, who has been elevated two other times this season, will provide depth with safety AJ Finley listed as questionable for the game. Hall was elevated for the first time since being signed to the practice squad in September. He was a fifth-round pick by Minnesota in 2023 and started two games for this Vikings during his rookie season.The Detroit Lions have arguably been the best team in football this season, as Dan Campbell's squad is 11-1 and have won ten consecutive games after a 1-1 start. Detroit picked up a scrappy 23-20 victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 13 and will host the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field in Week 14 on Thursday Night Football. Though the Lions' defense has been dominant in 2024, Detroit's offense is one of the most dynamic units in the league and has flourished under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. The 38-year-old took over as the franchise's offensive coordinator in 2022, and the Lions have finished in the top five in scoring every year Johnson has been the coordinator, including a league-leading 31.9 points per game through 12 games in 2024. Due to the Lions' excellence on offense, Johnson has become one of the premier head coaching candidates in the 2025 head coaching cycle. The former tight ends coach could have easily landed a head coaching gig last offseason but wants to be "very careful" in where he chooses to go, if he leaves Detroit at all, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. If Johnson decides to take a head coaching job this offseason, NFL Spin Zone's Lou Scataglia predicts the savvy offensive coordinator will be hired by the Bears to be the franchise's next head coach. We just saw a former coordinator leave his team to be a head coach on another team in the same division, so Ben Johnson leaving Detroit to be the head coach of the Chicago Bears is not all that unlikely. Former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn left to be the head coach of the Washington Commanders this past cycle. Johnson is probably waiting for that 'just right' opening since he's been such a coveted name these last two cycles. Being able to coach Caleb Williams and the Bears could be the right fit for him. Though the Bears have been plagued with dysfunction over the last decade, hiring Johnson would be a massive step toward reviving the franchise. Schefter reported on Dec.1 that the Lions' star coordinator could have some interest in taking the Bears' job. "Everybody's gonna have their eyes on Ben Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator, and I think he might have some interest in that job (Bears head coaching vacancy)," Schefter said. "We'll see if they can convince him to come to Chicago." Landing Johnson as head coach would be a fantastic hire by Chicago, as the long-time offensive coach would be a seamless fit with young signal caller Caleb Williams and would take the Bears' underwhelming offense to the next level. ORLANDO, Fla. — UCF coach Gus Malzahn is resigning after four seasons with the school. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the move, which will see Malzahn to leave to take the offensive coordinator job at Florida State. Malzahn previously worked with FSU coach Mike Norvell during their time at Tulsa under then-coach Todd Graham from 2007-08. The Knights ended a disappointing 4-8 season in which they lost eight of their last nine games, the longest losing streak since 2015. Malzahn, 59, was in the fourth year of a contract through 2028. His buyout, it is reported, would have been $13.75 million. He finished 27-25 at UCF but lost 16 of his last 22 games and was a dismal 4-14 in two seasons in the Big 12. After back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2021-22, the Knights went 6-7 in 2023 and 4-8 in 2024. This season started with high expectations as Malzahn made sweeping changes to the program. He retooled the strength and conditioning department and hired Ted Roof and Tim Harris Jr. as defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. He also added nearly 50 new players to the roster, leaning heavily on the transfer market. UCF started by winning its first three games against New Hampshire, Sam Houston and a thrilling comeback at TCU, but offensive struggles saw the Knights tumble through a TBD-game losing streak to finish the season. Terry Mohajir hired Malzahn on Feb. 15, 2021, six days after he was hired to replace Danny White. The move came eight weeks after Malzahn had been fired at Auburn after eight seasons of coaching the Tigers. The two briefly worked together at Arkansas State in 2012 before Malzahn left for the Auburn job. “When he [Mohajir] offered the job, I was like, ‘I’m in.’ There wasn’t thinking about or talking about ...,” Malzahn said during his introductory press conference. “This will be one of the best programs in college football in a short time. Malzahn struck transfer portal gold in the offseason when he signed former Ole Miss quarterback John Rhys Plumlee. Plumlee, a two-sport star with the Rebels, helped guide UCF to the American Athletic Conference Championship in its final season. However, Plumlee’s injury forced the Knights to go with Keene and freshman Thomas Castellanos. The team finished with losses to Tulane in the conference championship and Duke in the Military Bowl. Plumlee would return in 2023 as UCF transitioned to the Big 12 but would go down with a knee injury in the final minute of the Knights’ 18-16 win at Boise State on Sept. 9. He would miss the next four games as backup Timmy McClain took over the team. Even on his return, Plumlee couldn’t help UCF, on a five-game losing streak to open conference play. The Knights got their first Big 12 win at Cincinnati on Nov. 4 and upset No. 15 Oklahoma State the following week, but the team still needed a win over Houston in the regular-season finale to secure a bowl bid for the eighth straight season. Gurugram, Dec 22 (IANS): A cyber crime team of the Gurugram Police has arrested a Malaysian national who allegedly duped a man of Rs 2.81 crore on the pretext of investing in the stock market, police said. Police said on Sunday that they received a complaint regarding cheating of about Rs 2.81 crore for investing in the stock market. On the complaint, a case was registered under the relevant sections in Police Station Cyber ??West, Gurugram. During the investigation, a cyber crime police team led by Priyanshu Diwan, ACP (cybercrime) nabbed the accused from Tamil Nadu on Friday. The accused was identified as Mohammad Jameel bin Mohammad Iqbal, a resident of Malaysia. "During the probe, the investigation team found that the mother of the accused is from Tamil Nadu and he is also married in Tamil Nadu, due to which he knew the Tamil language. The above accused had come to India with another Malaysian partner, and he had taken the Indian SIM card used in committing the fraud from another accused, Devkaran. Some other SIM cards provided by the accused have also been used in the fraud cases," Priyanshu Diwan, ACP (cybercrime), said. Police then circulated a lookout notice against the accused, and the accused had come to Tamil Nadu to attend a wedding ceremony, after which the accused was arrested by Gurugram Police. Four accused have already been arrested in this case, he said. The investigation team has recovered a Malaysia passport, an international driving licence, a Malaysia identity card, a health card, a debit card, a Malaysia driving licence, a mobile phone, a SIM card, a ring and foreign and Indian currency from the possession of the accused. Further action will be taken in the case as per the rules. The case is under investigation, he added. Diwan said the Gurugram Police cyber crime teams are constantly taking necessary action against cyber criminals. It may be noted that the Gurugram Police have recovered Rs 83.41 crore from 1,658 cyber fraudsters, including 22 bank officials from different banks, in just 11 months from January to November 30 this year. The ACP said that the Gurugram Police are closely working with other agencies and organisations to counter these frauds.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it is mandated by law to use custody as a last resort and to release charged persons on the least onerous conditions possible prior to their court date. In Manitoba, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced a plan earlier this year meant to encourage Crown attorneys to more stringently approach bail, though some prosecutors privately panned the policy. The WPS argues its hands are tied by recent Criminal Code amendments in how supervising officers determine who to release and who to detain, with news releases frequently including a line that says the release of suspects on undertakings or appearance notices are “mandated” by the law. But current Manitoba prosecutors and a University of Manitoba law professor who recently spoke to the say that’s a misinterpretation. Police can decide to release an individual on an undertaking or appearance notice at their discretion, which both require attendance in court, or recommend to Crown prosecutors they be detained. If they’re detained, the accused will then be granted a hearing, where the courts will determine whether to grant bail pending further proceedings. WPS Sgt. Grant Lindgren, who worked in the city police central processing unit for a long time, said Criminal Code amendments that followed two 2017 Supreme Court decisions have fundamentally changed how police make decisions regarding detention and release. “Detention is absolute, 100 per cent, last resort.... We’re obligated, bound by law, to release people as early as possible on the least onerous conditions,” said Lindgren. “Most importantly, our grounds for detaining somebody have to be on objective, reasonable grounds to believe that they pose a continued risk.” He said, as a supervisor, when one of his officers makes an arrest, he must take into account what the person’s record of criminal convictions for related offences is, whether they’re reasonably likely to attend court and if they’re a reasonable and objective risk to public safety or for reoffending, among other considerations. Lindgren added that now, following the law amendments, police are able to impose certain release conditions, such as curfews, that they were unable to prior. “There are a lot of what-ifs — but we can’t base an objective decision on a what-if scenario,” said Lindgren. “What-ifs are always concerning, because human nature is such that we (develop) an idea based on what might happen, but the principles of justice are such that your Charter rights are based on what is, not what if; it’s just that simple.” One Crown attorney told the it was “crap” that police “keep blaming it on the code” when they release an accused person alleged to have committed a crime of violence. “The code allows for us to detain people when there is violence,” the prosecutor said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “There are definitely times they release people and say it is because of the code, and that is not accurate.” U of M law professor Brandon Trask, who used to work as a Crown attorney in the Maritimes, said he finds the police use of the term “mandated” concerning. “It’s concerning that the public is being left with the impression that our law mandates release. Our law, generally speaking, does not mandate release — that’s a judgment call,” said Trask. “In a lot of cases, that’s simply not accurate, and I’m puzzled as to why the police keep saying an individual’s release was mandated. There are pathways in our Criminal Code... to take a person into custody.” Police have “ultimate discretion” to release an accused on an undertaking as they see fit, a second Crown attorney said. “They can release them on an undertaking without referring to us at all,” the prosecutor said. However, according to Rosenberg, the extreme valuations may actually be warranted if AI can unleash a wave of productivity upon the economy. This idea was echoed by BlackRock in its 2025 outlook, which argued that comparing today's market valuations to those of the past is "apples to oranges" given the profound shift in America's tech-led economy. Perhaps more importantly, the promise of AI is ultimately leading investors to extend their time horizons beyond the traditional one-year outlook. "Investors are clearly looking out beyond one year across an entire gamut of indicators and developments, so the classic way we look at valuations may not be appropriate today," Rosenberg said. Rosenberg added that even if the stock market is in a bubble, it may not be apparent for years to come, similar to the internet bubble that began to form in the mid-1990s before ultimately popping in 2000. With profits booming for technology companies like Nvidia, the exuberance gripping investors doesn't appear to be extreme or unsustainable. "A bear market only ensues if and when these expectations prove to have been excessive. That day may well come, but Mr. Market has been saying for some time: 'not quite yet,'" Rosenberg said. A shift in the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy could also send markets lower, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards in the near term. "I don't think this is a vestige of the Golden Age of Hollywood," he told CNN over the phone. "I think (the most recent ones) capture something that we believe in the 21st century... That biology isn't destiny." To Cashmore, our current society is defined by the idea that "you can potentially do anything and be anything you want to be." "What (the audience) is looking at is a transition in process," he said. "They know this isn't really Harry Styles on stage, but if someone who looks so much like him, could even be him, you're giving someone an indication of just how malleable and changeable we are as human beings. Humanity isn't fixed." There's a chance to build a real community, too, he says. "These lookalike contests provide us with an opportunity to relate and form new relationships with people we might hitherto not know and would never cross paths with and wouldn't even say hello to them in a gym, in a club, in a bar, in a supermarket or anywhere," Cashmore added. "But the fact is, they share a common interest, and that is celebrity." Australia's proposal to ban under-16s from social media platforms is "rushed", social media companies claimed Tuesday, expressing "serious concerns" about potential unintended consequences. The landmark legislation would force social media firms to prevent young teens from accessing their platforms or face fines of up to Aus$50 million (US$32.5 million). Platforms such as X, Snapchat, TikTok, and Meta have criticised the 24-hour time frame given for stakeholder comments, claiming a lack of consultation and inadequate details about how the legislation would work. X said in its submission that it had "serious concerns" the ban would have "a negative impact" on children, adding it breached their "rights to freedom of expression and access to information". The company added that the proposed law was "vague" and "highly problematic" and that there was "no evidence" that it would work. Australia is among the vanguard of nations trying to clean up social media, and the proposed age limit would be among the world's strictest measures aimed at children. The proposed laws, which were presented to parliament last week, would also include robust privacy provisions that require tech platforms to delete any age-verification information collected. The government is trying to approve the law this week, before parliament breaks for the rest of the year. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said in its submission the ban would "fail" in its current form because there was not enough consultation with stakeholders. "More time should be taken to get this bill right," it said. TikTok raised concerns over the privacy provisions -- including that they overlapped and contradicted other legislation -- and the limited time to consult stakeholders. "Its rushed passage poses a serious risk of further unintended consequences," the company's submission said. Key details about how social media companies are expected to enforce the ban remain unclear. Some companies will be granted exemptions from the ban, such as YouTube, which teenagers may need to use for school work or other reasons. Once celebrated as a means of staying connected and informed, social media platforms have been tarnished by cyberbullying, the spread of illegal content, and election-meddling claims. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese insisted Tuesday that "social media is causing social harm". (Reuters) -U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday that on his first day in office he would impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, citing concerns over illegal immigration and the trade of illicit drugs. "On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border illegally. On China, the president-elect accused Beijing of not taking strong enough action to stop the flow of illicit drugs crossing the border into the U.S. from Mexico. "Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America," Trump said. Trump has previously pledged to end China's most-favored-nation trading status and slap tariffs on Chinese imports in excess of 60% - much higher than those imposed during his first term. The Chinese economy is in a much more vulnerable position given the country's prolonged property downturn, debt risks and weak domestic demand.
