Undoubtedly, high demand for better deals of everyday goods combined with an impressive merchandising strategy and expansion have helped the Canadian retail top dog continue to surge above and beyond the expectations of many . If the Canadian economy runs into a bit of trouble in the new year and consumers start budgeting more aggressively again, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dollarama sales were to stay upbeat. Indeed, an inflationary economy to a recessionary one (perhaps Trump tariffs could cause flat-to-negative GDP growth, though I have no idea if they’ll actually be as high as 25%). With a higher multiple, though, investors should be asking themselves if the defensive growth juggernaut has become a tad too expensive. Sure, Dollarama is a model for how dollar stores and discount retailers should be run. And while the company’s growth profile seems secure, even in the face of inflation or a potential stock market selloff, I still think that paying an above-average price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple is seldom a good idea, especially if expectations ahead of earnings are a tad on the high side. Dollarama stock is getting a tad pricey Though I would not ever recommend betting against Dollarama stock, I think there are better market deals right now, as the name is going for more than $145 and change per share and around 37.7 times trailing price to earnings (P/E). Indeed, that’s a really high price to pay, even for one of the most predictable and stabler growth companies in the consumer scene. As the firm rolls into its latest round of quarterly earnings, I’d argue there’s some chance of a post-earnings pullback should the numbers come up short of investor hopes. While it’s hard to find a cheaper high-growth retailer like Dollarama on the cheap, I think the following retail stocks are worth consideration as they progress with their growth plans. Alimentation Couche-Tard ( ) is another well-run retail firm that has a plan to keep growing its earnings at a steady pace over the next couple of years. Indeed, the main headline is that Couche-Tard is still doing its best to win over the right to acquire rival convenience retailer 7-Eleven in a deal that would be historic for the industry. At this juncture, Couche-Tard investors don’t seem quite sure which pathway the firm will ultimately take. In any case, I’m pretty confident Couche-Tard can get the deal done in the new year. With mostly negativity baked into the stock since the proposed deal hit the headlines, I think there may actually be some meaningful upside should a deal finally become official. Why? I believe that investors will gain more clarity into what the 7-Eleven deal could do to the earnings growth profile. Indeed, perhaps Couche-Tard can extract more than we give it credit for. Either way, the initial sticker shock on the proposed deal seems to be fading as investors pile back into ATD shares at modest multiples. Despite the recent relief rally, I still view ATD stock as a growth gem as a pretty sizeable discount. But in a "very unusual" move, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark only announced their visitor on Monday evening despite state visits usually taking months of planning and preparation. Today's events will be the first state visit Catherine has taken part in since her cancer diagnosis as she continues her gradual return to public duties. On Friday, the Princess will host her Together at Christmas concert inside Westminster Abbey alongside the rest of the royal family. There are two types of state visits: outward and incoming and they play an integral role in strengthening the host nation's relationships with other countries. The Prince and Princess of Wales will welcome the Qatari royals at their residence, on behalf of the King, on Tuesday morning, UK time (early evening in Australia). There, the royals will attend a lunch and visit a Picture Gallery exhibition. Palace aides said Camilla will join the Emir and his wife for the lunch and hopes to be able to attend the gallery display. The Queen will attend the glittering state banquet in the evening and will pose for a group photo as it begins. But Camilla is expected to take a short break before dinner while guests are being met in a receiving line. The Princess of Wales will not be in attendance at the banquet, but Prince William will be there. The Qatari state visit is the last to be hosted at Buckingham Palace until the end of 2027, due to a $700 million refurbishment of the residence. Future state visits will take place at Windsor Castle. Since Charles III came to the throne, he has hosted incoming state visits by the President of South Africa , the Korean President and the Emperor of Japan . US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to demand control of the Panama Canal be returned to Washington, complaining of "unfair" treatment of American ships and hinting at China's growing influence. Here are five things to know about the waterway connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The 80-kilometer (50-mile) interoceanic waterway is operated by the Panama Canal Authority, an autonomous public entity. The Central American nation's constitution describes the canal as an "inalienable heritage of the Panamanian nation" that is open to vessels "of all nations." The United States is its main user, accounting for 74 percent of cargo, followed by China with 21 percent. Panama's government sets the price of tolls based on canal needs and international demand. Rates depends on a vessel's cargo capacity. "The canal has no direct or indirect control from China, nor the European Union, nor the United States or any other power," Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino said Sunday as he dismissed Trump's threat. All vessels, including warships and submarines, are given a Panama Canal pilot. Panama's independence from Colombia in 1903 is linked to the canal. Following the failure of French count Ferdinand de Lesseps to open a channel through the isthmus, the United States promoted the separation of the province of Panama and signed a treaty with the nascent country that ceded land and water in perpetuity to build it. After 10 years of construction and an investment of $380 million, the canal was inaugurated on August 15, 1914 with the transit of the steamer Ancon. Some 25,000 deaths from disease and accidents were recorded during its construction. The canal "is part of our history" and "an irreversible achievement," Mulino said. Washington's establishment of a "Canal Zone" -- an enclave with its own military bases, police and justice system -- gave rise to decades of demands by Panamanians to reunify the country and take control of the waterway. In 1977, Panamanian nationalist leader Omar Torrijos and US president Jimmy Carter signed treaties that allowed the canal to be transferred to Panama on December 31, 1999. "Any attempt to reverse this historic achievement not only dishonors our struggle, but is also an insult to the memory of those who made it possible," former president Martin Torrijos, the general's son, wrote on social media. Under the treaties, supported by more than 40 countries, the canal is deemed neutral and any ship can pass through. The only conditions are that ships must comply with safety regulations and military vessels from countries at war must not pass through at the same time. Unlike Egypt's Suez Canal, the Panama Canal operates using freshwater stored in two reservoirs. A drought led to a reduction in the number of transits in 2023, but the situation has since normalized. The canal, which has a system of locks to raise and lower vessels, transformed global shipping. Crafts can travel between the two oceans in about eight hours without having to sail all the way around Cape Horn, the southern tip of the Americas. The canal allows a ship to shave 20,300 kilometers off a journey from New York to San Francisco. Five percent of world maritime trade passes through the canal, which connects more than 1,900 ports in 170 countries. By the early 21st century, it had become too small, so it was expanded between 2009 and 2016. Today, the canal can accommodate ships up to 366 meters long and 49 meters wide (1,200 feet by 161 feet) -- equivalent to almost four football pitches. It generates six percent of Panama's national economic output and since 2000 has pumped more than $28 billion into state coffers.
