Homer’s Epic Poem ‘The Odyssey’ To Be Christopher Nolan’s Next MovieExcelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 23: The State Investigation Agency (SIA) today took a significant stride in the fight against cyber-terrorism by filing a charge sheet against key operatives behind the notorious “Kashmir Fight”, a social media handle. The platform, operated by The Resistance Front (TRF)-a proscribed terrorist organization-was used to issue chilling online threats to migrant Kashmiri Pandit employees with a view to spread fear and unrest among them. The charge sheet was filed before the 3rd Additional Sessions Judge, Jammu, today. In February 2024, a series of threatening posts were published on social media by the terror outfit’s social media handle, following which an investigation was initiated by the SIA Jammu. During the course of investigations, the SIA apprehended Farhaan Muzaffar Mattoo, a resident of Srinagar, for his alleged role in gathering and sharing sensitive information about targeted employees. Investigations further revealed that Mattoo acted as a conduit, using encrypted communication platforms to pass critical data about migrant employees to handlers based in Pakistan, who then issued threats through the “Kashmir Fight” platform. The charge sheet has also named Sheikh Sajjad Ahmad, alias Sajjad Gul, a Srinagar resident now operating from Pakistan, as the mastermind of this plot. Sajad is accused of coordinating the campaign to intimidate migrant employees and disrupt communal harmony in the UT. “The exposing of terror plans to disrupt peace underscores the determination of Jammu and Kashmir Police to protect its citizenry and provide a peaceful environment to them,” an official statement issued here this evening said. There have been reports that the terrorists and Over Ground Workers (OGWS) were using Social Media to lure the youth into terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Some of the Social Media accounts are operating from across the border including Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK).

In December 1978, Jimmy Carter – who has died aged 100 – outlined his belief that American strategic decisions abroad should be shaped by an adherence to human rights. “ Human rights is the soul of our foreign policy ... because human rights is the soul of our sense of nationhood.” In the sphere of foreign affairs, Jimmy Carter’s one term as US president (1977-1981) had some notable achievements. The most significant was the 1978 Camp David accords . Carter, Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, and Egyptian president Anwar Sadat signed an agreement that saw Begin agree to relinquish the entire Sinai Peninsula, captured by Israel in the 1967 six-day war, in exchange for peace and full diplomatic relations with Egypt. This exemplified Carter’s belief in the power of American diplomacy and why US presidents should courageously assume the difficult task of peace-making . Twenty-five years later, and against the backdrop of the build-up to the second Gulf war, Carter was recognised for his role in the accords and awarded the 2002 Nobel peace prize. The Nobel committee said that while President George W. Bush was planning an invasion of Iraq: “former President Jimmy Carter was awarded the Peace Prize for undertaking peace negotiations, campaigning for human rights, and working for social welfare”. They added that the prize was in recognition of “his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development”. On leaving office in January 1981, Carter sought to use his status as a former president to engage in the issues and causes that mattered to him most. He established the Carter Center to pursue his own course of personal diplomacy. Starting in 1982, the centre has monitored more than 110 elections in 39 countries. Ahead of the 2020 US presidential election and as then president Donald Trump on refused to commit to a peaceful transition should he lose, the Carter Center took the extraordinary step of designating the US as a “backsliding” democracy . Devout diplomacy Carter, a devout Christian, maximised his personal relationships with former world leaders to promote democracy and human rights, support scientific work on eliminating diseases, and to mediate where possible to prevent conflict. His activism was not always appreciated by some of his White House successors, both Republican and Democrat. Randall Balmer , professor of religion at Dartmouth College, said that the former president’s personal brand of diplomacy could often complicate and even contradict contemporary US diplomatic initiatives. Carter was a member of The Elders , an independent group of global leaders working on peace promotion, social justice, climate change and global human rights. During his years of active membership Carter dedicated significant energy to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict , visiting the region on a number of occasions to support the Elders’ work. In the early 1990s the former president became involved in mediation work between the US State Department and several rogue states including North Korea and Libya. In 1994, Carter supported the US government’s diplomatic efforts to resolve an increasingly tense nuclear weapons’ situation with North Korean leader Kim Il Sung. Carter met with Kim in June 1994, becoming the first former US president to visit the country. The trip laid the groundwork for an eventual bilateral deal between North Korea and the US. The agreement saw North Korea pledge to freeze its plutonium weapons programme, while the US agreed to offer aid. Continued work in his 90s Carter continued to weigh-in on contemporary geopolitical events well into his 90s. He was openly critical when Trump announced in May 2018 that he was withdrawing the US from the Iran nuclear agreement , which had been negotiated by the Obama administration in 2015. He called Trump’s move a “serious mistake” . Carter felt that an international agreement made by an American president needed to be binding on all their successors and that by walking away from the Iran deal the US was signalling a “message to North Korea that if the United States signs an agreement, it may or may not be honored”. One of Carter’s major accomplishments since leaving office was his centre’s work in health care, and specifically the eradication of Guinea-worm disease. This is a parasitic infection caused by drinking contaminated water. The consequences of the illness , while not fatal, can incapacitate the sufferer and lead to permanent disability. The Carter Center committed to training over 100,000 village-based health care workers, invested in education programmes and provided water filters to protect people from swallowing the parasite. The results have been highly successful. According to the centre: “incidences of Guinea-worm disease have been reduced from an estimated 3.5 million in 1986 to 13 in 2023 , with the disease being eliminated in 17 countries”. Jimmy Carter’s commitment to human rights never went away and his concept of a human-rights focused foreign policy has become permanently encoded in the global conversation . The former president’s work brought him international acclaim, and illustrated why the nation’s leaders should reject short-sighted calculations that risk the US being complicit in human rights violations . Calin Georgescu, who ran independently, led the polls with around 22% of the vote, while Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party, or PSD, trailed at 20.6%. Elena Lasconi of the Save Romania Union party, or USR, stood at about 17.4%, and George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, or AUR, took 14.3%. After polls closed at 9 p.m. local time (1900GMT), 9.4 million people — about 52.4% of eligible voters — had cast ballots, according to the Central Election Bureau. Thirteen candidates ran for the presidency in the European Union and NATO member country, and will go to a second round on Dec. 8. The president serves a five-year term and has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security, foreign policy and judicial appointments. Georgescu, 62, ran independently and was not widely known. He outperformed most local surveys, sending shockwaves through Romania's political establishment. After casting his ballot on Sunday, Georgescu said in a post on Facebook that he voted “For the unjust, for the humiliated, for those who feel they do not matter and actually matter the most ... the vote is a prayer for the nation.” Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, told The Associated Press that Georgescu’s unexpected poll performance appears to be a “large protest or revolt against the establishment.” “The mainstream political parties have lost the connection with regular Romanians,” he said. “You don’t have strong candidates or strong leaders ... there are weak candidates, weak leaders, and the parties in general are pretty much disconnected.” Georgescu lacks an agenda, Andrei added, and has a vague and populist manifesto with positions that are “beyond the normal discourse." His stances include supporting Romanian farmers, reducing dependency on imports, and ramping up energy and food production. He also has a rapidly growing on the social media platform, TikTok. Ahead of Sunday's vote, many expected to see Simion, a vocal supporter of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, face Ciolacu in the second round. He campaigned for reunification with Moldova, which this year renewed a five-year ban on him entering the country over security concerns, and he is banned for the same reason from neighboring Ukraine. Ecaterina Nawadia, a 20-year-old architecture student, said she voted for the first time in a national election on Sunday and hopes young people turn out in high numbers. “Since the (1989) revolution, we didn’t have a really good president,” she said. “I hope most of the people my age went to vote ... because the leading candidate is not the best option.” Romania will also hold parliamentary elections on Dec. 1 that will determine the country’s next government and prime minister. Andrei, the political consultant, said Romania's large budget deficit, high inflation, and an economic slowdown could push more mainstream candidates to shift toward populist stances amid widespread dissatisfaction. Ciolacu told the AP before the first-round vote that one of his biggest goals was “to convince Romanians that it is worth staying at home or returning” to Romania, which has a massive diaspora spread throughout EU countries. Other candidates included former NATO deputy general secretary Mircea Geoana , who ran independently and obtained about 6%; and Nicolae Ciuca, a former army general and head of the center-right National Liberal Party, which is currently in a tense coalition with the PSD — who stood at 9.3%. Geoana, a former foreign minister and ambassador to the United States, told the AP before Sunday's vote that he believed his international experience would qualify him above the other candidates. Lasconi, a former journalist and the leader of the USR, said she sees corruption as one of the biggest problems Romania faces and that she supports increased defense spending and continued aid to Ukraine.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Myles Garrett was in no mood to celebrate his birthday or making history. Garrett recorded two sacks to become the first NFL player with 14 sacks in four straight seasons, but the Cleveland Browns couldn't do anything on offense during a 20-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Garrett turned 29 and turned in another stellar performance in this dreadful season for the Browns (3-13), who had hoped to take another step after making the playoffs a year ago. But nothing has gone right in Cleveland, and now the team is facing another offseason of change. Garrett has 14 sacks this season and 102 1/2 in his eight-year career. He's making the case for a second consecutive NFL defensive player of the year honor. But there isn't any award that will ease the pain of his fourth double-digit loss season. “At the end of the day, we play for wins,” Garrett said. “The individual stuff is great. It's nice, you want to be remembered for all of the above. But cities remember you for wins and bringing championships back home. “That's always been my intention. So, I want to get back on track, want to get back to winning, whether it's the last one or whatever's in store next season.” Garrett recently made it clear that he does not want to be part of another rebuild in Cleveland, saying he wanted to see the team's plans to improve the roster. His comments opened the possibility that he could ask for a trade if he isn't satisfied with the Browns' outlook. After the Browns dropped their fifth in a row to finish 2-6 at home, Garrett said he never considered that it might be his last game in Cleveland. “I don't think about that kind of stuff,” he said. “My mission is to go out there and try to help this team win as a leader, as a brother, as a teammate. That's what I solely focus on. I'm not looking into the future. Next thing on my mind is recovery, looking at film, how can we improve going to the Ravens and try to play spoiler for them.” Garrett hasn't given up. For the second week in a row, he displayed extraordinary effort while chasing a scrambling quarterback without getting a sack. He won't quit. “He's the best pass rusher in the game,” Browns guard Joel Bitonio said. “You could ask all the players, all the coaches. He's probably the guy they fear going up against the most. He's dynamic. He's a special player. He's doing his thing. I hope we can get some stuff around him so he can win some games around here.” Garrett twice went into the medical tent during the game. He slowly walked to his locker to get dressed before turning on some music that brought a little life into an otherwise somber Cleveland locker room. Garrett laughed when asked if he's pushing himself to the end. “I'm just old,” he said. “I'm 29. I'm not going to be dragging myself through the finish line. I'll be fine by Friday, Saturday and be ready to go. I always am." ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Tom Withers, The Associated Press

'Murderous' Kentucky sheriff is hit with new charge after executing judge in his court house By MELISSA KOENIG FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 23:51 GMT, 25 November 2024 | Updated: 23:54 GMT, 25 November 2024 e-mail View comments A former Kentucky sheriff accused of fatally shooting a judge inside his chambers was arraigned Monday on a new criminal charge. Shawn 'Mickey' Stines, 43, did not speak or show any emotion during the hearing at the Letcher County Courthouse - the same one where he is accused of gunning down Kentucky District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, in his chambers on September 19, CNN reports. Instead, his attorney entered a not guilty plea on behalf of his shackled client to a new charge of murder of a public official. Stines had also previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges, for which a grand jury indicted him last week and a special judge appointed to preside over the case said he could face the death penalty. But on Monday, defense attorney Jeremy Bartley claimed Stines has a 'compelling defense' for the shooting, which he has previously called a crime of passion carried out while Stines was experiencing an 'extreme emotional disturbance.' He claimed that a deposition his client gave just days prior to the shooting 'is part of that defense,' according to the Louisville Courier-Journal. The former sheriff, who stepped down from his role following his arrest, was one of several parties sued in federal court in 2022 over allegations that Ben Fields, then a Letcher County deputy sheriff, exchanged favorable treatment to a woman on home incarceration for sexual favors inside Mullins' private courthouse office. Stines is not accused of taking part in the exchange, for which Fields spent several months in jail, but plaintiffs have argued he failed to property train and supervise the deputy. Shawn 'Mickey' Stines, 43, did not speak or show any emotion during Monday's hearing at the Letcher County Courthouse, as his attorney entered a not guilty plea to a new charge of murder or a public official Stines is accused of shooting dead Kentucky District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, in his chambers on September 19 He was scheduled to give a deposition on September 16 - just four days before he allegedly waltzed into Mullins' chambers in Whitesburg, spoke with the judge and opened fire eight times. Bartley noted that the timing of the deposition is 'certainly something that's going to be crucial in this case. 'I do believe that that is a piece,' he said. 'This is a large story. It's a story that, in some ways, is difficult to tell. 'We look forward to sharing a more complete version of that as we go through this judicial process.' Police have said Stines walked into the judge's outer office, told court employees he needed to speak to Mullins alone, then proceeded to shoot him once they entered the inner office. Video of the incident, played in court at Stines' previous hearing in October, showed a man identified by police as Stines pulling out a gun and shooting the judge as he sat at his desk. The man walked around the desk, pointed the gun at the judge - who had fallen to the floor - and fired again. A detective who testified at the hearing also claimed that Stines tried calling his daughter - whose number have been saved on Mullins ́ phone - just before the fatal shooting. Stines had been the Letcher County sheriff at the time of the shooting, and was apparently good friends with the judge Footage of the shooting showed a man, identified by police as Stines, pulling out a gun and shooting the judge as he sat at his desk Mullins, who had held the judgeship for 15 years, died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, and Stines surrendered without incident. He was later seen walking out of the courthouse with his hands raised and surrendering to officers, who placed him in handcuffs. Stines is said to have told the cops to 'treat me fair' as he was arrested. He also allegedly told police, 'They're trying to kidnap my wife and kid,' the detective testified. Investigators found no weapon on Mullins or in his chambers, the detective said. Stines will remain behind bars in Leslie County after a judge denied him bond on Monday A motive for the shooting remains unclear, especially as DailyMail.com revealed Stines and Mullins were once good friends. They even shared an outside table at the popular Streetside Grill & Bar on Main Street for lunch only a few hundred yards from the courthouse, just hours before the shooting. The pair were lunchtime regulars together at the sports bar and on that fateful Thursday ordered their usual – both having the $13.99 wings with salad. Stines will now remain behind bars in Leslie County ahead of a potential trial, after a judge denied him bond on Monday - citing concerns with security, community safety and the severity of the charges against him. With the help of the massive inventory retained by dbBooks, Korea’s oldest independent book dealer, the Korea JoongAng Daily sought out hidden gems on their shelves. In this interview series, we find them for you and talk to the creatives behind them. Author Bae Myung-hoon speaks to the Korea JoongAng Daily for an interview at Tongbang Books' office in Seongdong District, eastern Seoul. [PARK SANG-MOON] Writing was originally a hobby for author Bae Myung-hoon. He began in politics, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in political science from Seoul National University in the early 2000s. He wasn't interested in popular science fiction, a genre in which Korean characters were few and far between at the time. Related Article Truth in tales: How illustrator Hanna Cha's dragons symbolize her Korean American experience Not just for kids: Author Lee Suzy touts benefits of picture books for all readers It wasn't until he won a university fiction contest with a short story titled “Terrorist” (2004), followed by a science fiction competition hosted by the Korea Foundation for Science and Creativity at the Dong-A Ilbo, that he realized he might have a knack for the activity — and, more importantly, that the traditionally western genre could have a place in Korean society. “In the beginning, I had no prior knowledge of the genre,” Bae told the Korea JoongAng Daily. “I just wrote about things that I knew.” The 46-year-old, now the author of more than 20 books and short stories, is considered a pioneer of Korea's modern science fiction market. His writing is known to blur the line between genre and literary fiction, touching on universal themes such as nationalism, war and resilience. Many of his works are set in Korea and feature Korean characters, a trend that was less common before he entered the scene. Still, when writing “The Proposal,” his newly translated book, Bae wasn't exactly sure how it, or he, would fit into the writing world. The book was published 11 years ago to a reaction the author describes as “lukewarm." “People, including myself, weren’t very aware of the sci-fi genre, and some even considered it a kind of low-rate,” the author said. Related Article Han Kang 'shocked' by martial law, calls it a 'return to the age of control and suppression' 'Truths will be spoken': Nobel winner Han Kang on the necessity of literature Han Kang says 1979 martial law in hometown of Gwangju still affects her Based in space ahead of an imminent war, “The Proposal” is a series of letters from a space-born protagonist to his lover in Seoul. The work reflects “on the distances that separate us—both physically and emotionally—and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit, ever striving to overcome these divides,” according to Honford Star. The space-born protagonist questions, often wittingly, humanity's tendencies, like its inherent nationalism, that draw lines in the face of a lesser-understood existence. “The most primal ethic that makes humans humans is not the taboos against cannibalism or incest but the ability to tell up from down," Bae writes in the book. Such themes tap into Korean experiences, Bae believes, in a way that sci-fi historically hasn't. “SF books require a bit of nationalistic confidence,” he said, “and Korean writers in the past didn’t have that. For example, if someone were to go to the moon, it would be odd to make that character a Korean. It would make more sense for the protagonist to be an American.” Cover of ′′The Proposal′′ by Bae Myung-hoon [HONFORD STAR] Much of sci-fi, consequently, used to be narrated by American characters, which Bae says “didn’t quite click with the readers." “It would seem obvious today that a Korean author would write in a Korean voice, but that wasn’t the case in science fiction 20 years ago.” Bae was one of the authors who paved the path for sci-fi stories with Korean protagonists, best known for “Tower” (2009) and “Launch Something!” (2022), both of which have been translated into English. “The Proposal,” translated by Stella Kim and released this fall by Honford Star, was the third of his books to be published in the language. One thing those works have in common, Bae says, is that their characters identify conflict not within themselves but rather with their surroundings. Solutions, if they exist, are also found in the environment. “There isn’t a big internal realization that happens and then changes the protagonist,” he said. “It is about how the characters interact with the world around them.” For instance, in "The Proposal," the protagonist's main dilemma with his army's corruption is a completely external problem. As he works through his conflicts, no significant mind shift or growth ensues that he comes out at the end of the novel a changed person. His love for space - his home - is left unchanged and because of that, and his sense of loyalty to his job, he is unable to travel back to his lover on Earth. They also, as is the case with some sci-fi works, don't bog readers with scientific facts and measurements. He makes heavy use of the phenomenon sci-fi critics refer to as “cognizant estrangement,” whereby a fictional setting helps the reader to better understand their empirical reality. “I’m not so interested in science and technology but how a society functions,” Bae said. “Sci-fi is how I understand the world.” He hopes that such genre-bending stories like “The Proposal” will continue to resonate in Korea's market, where he feels that, despite decades of progress, sci-fi is still considered inferior to more “traditional” works. It's a genre, after all, that chose him. “There wasn’t a specific moment that I told myself, ‘I want to be a science fiction writer,’” said Bae. “What I liked writing, it turned out, was science fiction. It was very organic in coming.” He's spent a considerable amount of time thinking about space and studying it, but it isn't a place where he would rather be. “Space is a great place for my mind to travel to limitlessly, but I like Earth,” he said, and more jokingly added, “I wouldn't be able to handle space's zero-gravity.” BY LEE JIAN [ [email protected] ]

Dec 3 (Reuters) - After a Delaware judge last January struck down CEO Elon Musk’s $56 billion pay package, Tesla’s board of directors faced a choice. The board could have reopened the complex process of negotiating a compensation deal with Musk, this time with guardrails in place to assure the plan would be deemed fair to all of Tesla’s shareholders despite Musk’s sway over the company. That option, as the electric vehicle maker eventually told shareholders in a proxy filing , opens new tab last April, had distinct disadvantages. It would have been time-consuming and potentially very expensive: Tesla told shareholders that it believed the company would have faced an accounting charge of more than $25 billion if it had adopted a new compensation package that granted Musk the stock options he had been promised in the pay plan rescinded by Delaware Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick. A newly negotiated plan, Tesla (TSLA.O) , opens new tab said in the proxy filing, might also have adverse tax consequences for both Musk and the company. The board's other choice was simply to ask shareholders to vote again on the pay package they had previously approved in 2018, but this time with beefed up disclosures, including the full text of McCormick’s opinion concluding that directors had breached their duties when they approved the deal for Musk. A new vote, Tesla said in the April proxy filing, would “cure” the court’s criticism and would “extinguish claims for a breach of fiduciary duty.” This so-called “ratification” of the previous shareholder vote had obvious advantages for the company, as Tesla told shareholders in the proxy statement. It was quick, which meant Musk would soon have a new pay package after working for six years without compensation. It also gave shareholders a voice. And it could save Tesla from shelling out billions of dollars in fees to the plaintiffs' lawyers who had challenged Musk’s pay, the company told shareholders, because those lawyers could no longer argue that they had saved Tesla billions of dollars by blocking the transfer of valuable options to Musk. Tesla acknowledged in its proxy filing that its ratification theory was “novel” and that Delaware courts might not agree with the company’s assessment of the theory’s viability and its impact on the case. But Tesla’s board told shareholders that its one-woman special independent committee had concluded — without even bringing in a compensation consultant — that ratification was the better course. The board told shareholders in the April proxy materials that it agreed. So, apparently, did shareholders, who voted resoundingly in favor of reconfirming Musk’s 2018 pay package at Tesla’s annual meeting in June. Tesla subsequently pointed to the second vote in filings asking McCormick to revise her original opinion because shareholders had once again approved Musk’s pay deal, this time in a fully informed vote. Tesla also said shareholder lawyers were entitled to no more than $54.5 million for their efforts. Tesla, in essence, wagered that it would rather test its novel ratification theory in Delaware courts than restart the process of setting Musk’s compensation. It lost that bet on Monday, when McCormick denied , opens new tab Tesla’s request for modification of her original opinion in light of the shareholder vote in June. McCormick concluded that Tesla’s theory — that a do-over vote by shareholders can effectively undo a judge’s post-trial court ruling — has no basis in common law, Delaware procedural rules, Delaware case law or even Delaware policy. The judge also said that even if Tesla’s board was right about the ratifying effect of shareholders’ second vote approving Musk’s pay package, that re-vote was tainted by the proxy statement’s overly confident depiction of the impact of the vote. Tesla said in a post on X that it plans to appeal McCormick’s new and original rulings to the Delaware Supreme Court, as my Reuters colleagues Tom Hals and Jon Stempel reported on Monday. So there is still a chance that Tesla’s ratification theory will ultimately prevail. There's also still a chance that Delaware's justices will overturn McCormick’s original holding that the board breached its duty in negotiating the 2018 compensation plan with Musk. (I received no response to my email query to Tesla and defense counsel from Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.) Nonetheless, after reading McCormick’s decision, I wondered whether Tesla and its CEO would have been better off if Tesla’s board had opted for renegotiation rather than pushing for McCormick to endorse its novel ratification theory. Remember, Tesla's directors did not need much convincing to reject that course based on accounting and tax considerations. But four law professors told me on Tuesday that if Tesla had reopened negotiations, it would probably have been able to formulate a new Musk compensation plan that could withstand court scrutiny. The professors — Stephen Bainbridge of the University of California at Los Angeles, Eric Talley of Columbia University, Ann Lipton of Tulane University and retired professor Charles Elson of the University of Delaware — said Tesla’s board would have needed to abide by standard corporate procedures, including the creation of a genuinely independent committee to negotiate with Musk. If the board had set up those guardrails, Talley said by email, it could have justified even a retroactive package that rewarded Musk for working without pay since 2018. “Keeping Elon happy (and not vengeful) at Tesla could easily provide a rational basis for making a retrospective award,” Talley said. He and Bainbridge noted an additional wrinkle: If Tesla’s board had waited until the company’s reincorporation in Texas to reset Musk’s compensation, the company might not have had to worry about all of Delaware’s rules for transactions involving a controlling shareholder. It’s not even clear, Bainbridge said, that Texas courts would deem Musk, who does not own a majority of Tesla’s shares, to be a controlling shareholder. “It would have been much cleaner to simply wait to do this after the move to Texas,” Bainbridge said. “It would have been better to start from scratch.” Read more: Delaware judge rejects Musk's $56 billion Tesla pay - again What is next for Musk after judge rules against him in Tesla pay case? For the first time in 15 years, Hanukkah and Christmas coincide in 2024: The Jewish holiday begins with the first candle lighting at sundown on Christmas Day. These holidays are an important affirmation of our religious heritage. America was established on a biblical worldview, and it can’t survive without it. President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “Our form of government makes no sense unless it is founded in a deeply felt religious faith, and I don’t care what it is.” Ike was not saying that religious differences are unimportant, but that faith itself is what matters. George Washington — another soldier turned statesman — cautioned in his Farewell Address that “religion and morality are indispensable supports” of political prosperity. His successor, John Adams, said: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” President Ronald Reagan warned, “If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.” Today, we are a nation adrift in a sea of doubt. According to a March Gallup survey, only 30% of Americans now attend religious services regularly, while 56% seldom or never do so. Those who don’t identify with any religion (the “nones”) rose from 13% in 2010 to 21% today. Is it so surprising then that in an Emerson College poll, 41% of adults under 30 said the cold-blooded killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was “acceptable”? This is what comes from not teaching religion to the young but instead allowing them to absorb the values of the secular culture. All of our most intractable problems — including crime, drug abuse and depression — are related to a weakening of faith. In its 12-step program, Alcoholics Anonymous explains: “Accepting a higher power helps you to see life from a different perspective and creates a sense of accountability.” Religious people are happier, healthier and more involved with their family and community. The left, which has an instinctive aversion to religion — Karl Marx called it the “opium of the masses”— keeps casting about for a substitute. The French Revolution created a Cult of Reason to replace Christianity and set up an altar to it in Notre Dame Cathedral. In 2024, the Democratic Party tried to turn democracy (a word found nowhere in America’s founding documents) into a religion. In his 2022 speech at Independence Hall , President Biden indicted his predecessor as a threat to democracy. Mr. Biden used Independence Hall as a prop without any understanding of its real significance. The Declaration of Independence, which was signed there, speaks of unalienable rights endowed by the Creator. If such a document were produced today, progressives would be screaming that the authors had violated the mythical wall separating church and state. Democrats saw the Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol not as trespass and vandalism but as heresy — the pagans committing acts of sacrilege in the temple of democracy. The failure of their attempts to deify democracy may be seen in the results of the 2024 election: President-elect Donald Trump became the first Republican in 20 years to receive a majority of the popular vote . As supreme allied commander in Europe during World War II, Eisenhower was as responsible as anyone for our victory. When our forces began liberating the death camps, the future president was so moved by the horrors uncovered that he was determined to document them. On April 12, 1945, Eisenhower visited Dachau in the company of Gens. George Patton and Omar Bradley. He wrote to Winston Churchill that the English language didn’t have words to describe what he saw. What he saw was a monument to depravity — to a government based on ideology, in this case, the master race theory — the only alternative to one based on religious values. Modernity has witnessed so many horrific examples of state power driven by ideology — the Reign of Terror, communism, the Holocaust, Islamism (a cult masquerading as a religion) and the soft totalitarianism of diversity, equity and inclusion. During the Revolutionary War, Valley Forge was the low point of the American cause. A famous painting by a contemporary artist shows Washington kneeling in the snow and praying outside the Continental Army’s encampment. Such faith has sustained us in every war and national crisis. The fight to maintain our religious heritage is far more important than tariffs or tax cuts. Adapted from The Washington Times .The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved a controversial proposal to allow the use of phosphogypsum, a radioactive byproduct from the phosphate industry, in a pilot road construction project in Florida. This decision has sparked a backlash from environmental groups concerned about its risks to public health and water quality. The EPA’s approval is specifically for a project proposed by Mosaic Fertilizer, a subsidiary of The Mosaic Company. The pilot program will take place on company property in Polk County. Mosaic plans to build four test road sections utilizing various mixtures of phosphogypsum in the road base material. Traditionally, phosphogypsum is stored in large stacks, which has raised environmental concerns. Radioactive waste In its notice, set to be published in the Federal Register, the EPA clarified that this approval is limited to the pilot project and does not extend to broader applications of phosphogypsum in road construction. While acknowledging the significant opposition expressed during the public comment period, the agency concluded that the pilot project poses a low risk to human health and the environment. The EPA stated, “Results from multiple modeling efforts indicate that risks due to the proposed pilot project are low.” It emphasized that the evaluation focused on potential risks to site workers and residents rather than extensive environmental impacts. The agency further asserted that no new concerns were raised during the public comments that had not already been considered in their assessment. Carcinogen However, environmental advocates have voiced strong concerns about the EPA’s decision. Ragan Whitlock, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, criticized the approval as “mind-boggling.” She emphasized the potential dangers to road workers and the risk of phosphogypsum contaminants affecting nearby water sources. Whitlock cautioned that this pilot project could pave the way for a wider acceptance of phosphogypsum in public infrastructure nationwide. “The well-documented harm to public health and the environment from this kind of waste leaking out of radioactive phosphogypsum storage stacks should lead to better oversight of Florida’s biggest polluters,” Whitlock stated. “Instead, the EPA appears to have succumbed to political pressures from the phosphate industry, allowing this hazardous waste to be used on roads nationwide. We will do everything possible to shield Florida’s residents and its precious natural resources from this reckless initiative.” The backdrop of this decision includes recent developments in Florida’s legislative landscape. In 2023, state lawmakers, along with Governor Ron DeSantis, passed a bill that empowered the Florida Department of Transportation to study the use of phosphogypsum in road construction. The bill states, “Upon a determination of suitability by the department, phosphogypsum from phosphate production may be used as a construction aggregate material in accordance with the conditions of the United States Environmental Protection Agency approval for the use.” This regulatory shift reflects an increasing interest among industry stakeholders in finding new applications for phosphogypsum despite the environmental risks involved. As Mosaic and the EPA embark on this pilot project, debates surrounding the safety and implications of using radioactive materials in public infrastructure will likely intensify. Environmental groups are expected to closely monitor the outcomes, advocating for stringent oversight to protect public health and Florida’s unique ecosystems.Christmas: Olukoyede Affirms Greater Prospects For Nigeria

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former Temple basketball standout Hysier Miller sat for a long interview with the NCAA as it looked into concerns about unusual gambling activity, his lawyer said Friday amid reports a federal probe is now under way. “Hysier Miller fully cooperated with the NCAA’s investigation. He sat for a five-hour interview and answered every question the NCAA asked. He also produced every document the NCAA requested,” lawyer Jason Bologna said in a statement. “Hysier did these things because he wanted to play basketball this season, and he is devastated that he cannot.” Miller, a three-year starter from South Philadelphia, transferred to Virginia Tech this spring. However, the Hokies released him last month due to what the program called “circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech.” Bologna declined to confirm that a federal investigation had been opened, as did spokespeople for both the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported Thursday that authorities were investigating whether Miller bet on games he played in at Temple, and whether he adjusted his performance accordingly. “Hysier Miller has overcome more adversity in his 22 years than most people face in their lifetime. He will meet and overcome whatever obstacles lay ahead," Bologna said. Miller scored eight points — about half his season average of 15.9 — in a 100-72 loss to UAB on March 7 that was later flagged for unusual betting activity. Temple said it has been aware of those allegations since they became public in March, and has been cooperative. “We have been fully responsive and cooperative with the NCAA since the moment we learned of the investigation,” Temple President John Fry said in a letter Thursday to the school community. However, Fry said Temple had not received any requests for information from state or federal law enforcement agencies. He vowed to cooperate fully if they did. “Coaches, student-athletes and staff members receive mandatory training on NCAA rules and regulations, including prohibitions on involvement in sports wagering," Fry said in the letter. The same week the Temple-UAB game raised concerns, Loyola (Maryland) said it had removed a person from its basketball program after it became aware of a gambling violation. Temple played UAB again on March 17, losing 85-69 in the finals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. League spokesman Tom Fenstermaker also declined comment on Friday. In the post “ Not Like Us ” summer, Kendrick Lamar emerged victorious against his feud with Drake and left fans on the edge of their seats for his next body of work. Some felt it would likely arrive before the Super Bowl, but no one expected it to drop so soon. “wacced out murals,” the album’s intro, sets the tone while Kendrick gets a few things off his chest. He takes a shot or two at Drake, namedrops Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg , and airs out his grievances surrounding white comedians who make disparaging remarks towards Black women. “ Don't let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that's law, ” Kendrick raps on the song. The one line in particular caused a storm online and eventually, earned a response from Schulz, who assumed that bar was targeting him. Below, we’ll be breaking down the controversy at large and the escalating feud between Kendrick Lamar and Andrew Schulz. Read More: Kendrick Lamar “wacced out murals” Lyric Breakdown U.K.-based podcast hosts James Duncan and Fuhad Dawodu of Shxtsngigs appeared on Andrew Schulz’s Flagrant podcast in the fall when they engaged in a discussion surrounding the “Black girlfriend effect.” Duncan and Dawodu argued that Black women “glow up the other culture” in mixed relationships. “All of a sudden, they have a line-up, clean shape up. He glows up, bro,” Duncan said. However, Schulz said that it was actually a “protective instinct.” “They shave their hair because they start losing it, because he's so stressed to be around this Black girl complaining about sh*t all the f*cking time. That’s why they shave their head,” Schulz said. “They grow a beard because there’s more cushion when they get slapped the f*ck out of.” The comments earned some widespread backlash from both Schulz and the Shxtsngigs podcast hosts who eventually offered an apology. However, Schulz doubled down on the “edgy” humor without offering an apology to those offended by the misogynoir commentary. In the third verse of the GNX intro, Kendrick Lamar seemingly references the situation, though without mentioning names, it’s really an “if the shoe fits” type of situation, especially since Gary Owen responded to the song . In “wacced out murals,” Kendrick raps, “Don't let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that's law/ I know propaganda work for them, and fuck whoever that's close to them/ The n***as that’s coon, the n***as that being goons, slide on both of them.” Many assumed Kendrick Lamar targeted Andrew Schulz since the ShxtsNGigs controversy happened a few months prior. And while Kendrick Lamar’s bar could definitely apply to Andrew Schulz, the subsequent bars indicate that the issue is figures like Duncan and Dawodu who let the joke slide unchecked. Shortly after the album dropped, social media dissected every angle of the album. However, Akademiks eventually highlighted this particular bar in a live-stream, revealing that he contacted Schulz who felt as though Kendrick was speaking about him. "Is this guy too woke to understand a joke?" Schulz allegedly told Akademiks who relayed the message to his audience. Read More: Kendrick Lamar Announces 2025 "Grand National" Tour With SZA: Tickets, Dates & More During the latest episode, Schulz o ffered an official response where he deemed Kendrick Lamar hypocritical and a clout-chaser for dissing comedians. “Nobody has respected women more through art than rappers,” he said sarcastically. “So I completely understand how a rapper could look at a comedian telling a joke and be like, ‘Yo, y’all need to switch that sh*t up. How dare y’all keep saying your wives are annoying. Be more like us and... b*tches ain’t nothing but hoes and tricks. I beat my b*tch with a stick, what?’” Schulz continued to group all rappers together, claiming that hip-hop’s long history of misogyny makes Kendrick look like a hypocrite. Moreover, he brought up Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming comedy movie with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park, who themselves have a history of creating edgy and offensive material. Afterward, Andrew Schulz’s co-host, Akaash Singh, brought up the number of accused abusers that Kendrick has collaborated with over the years, including Kodak Black and Dr. Dre . He also cited the Spotify controversy a few years ago when Kendrick Lamar threatened to remove his music from the streaming platform in response to the Hate Content & Hateful Conduct Policy that removed XXXTENTACION and R. Kelly ’s music from editorial and algorithmic playlists. In the same episode, Schulz told his co-hosts that he would “make love to him and the only thing he could do is decide if it’s consensual or not.” “I would make love to him and there's nothing he could do about it. Just Kendrick Lamar. I would make love to him and the only thing he could do is decide if it's consensual or not," Schulz began. "That's the only thing he could do. If it's me and Kendrick, it's about physics," he continued. "I don't even know if I'll get hard. But, if we're in a cell, and we're bored and we're done tattooing each other–whatever you do in a cell, and we ran out of board games and we did all the other things, and we cleaned everything, and I'm like, 'Man, I might as well f*ck you.' There's nothing he can physically do to stop that. I'd put his legs in the air and choose a position." While Kendrick Lamar hasn’t responded to Andrew Schulz yet, the comedian has felt the wrath of the hip-hop community at large, though the internet at large has been divided. Schulz has faced plenty of condemnation from people like TDE Punch, Meek Mill (who he later responded to), Peter Rosenberg, and many others. However, DJ Akademiks pointed out the contradiction in the public's response , citing the viral moment when Saucy Santana threatened to rape him following a volley of insults between the two. Some agreed with Ak, and others felt it wasn’t similar at all.Tony Stewart Takes Bold Stance On Michael Jordan And Denny Hamlin's NASCAR Legal Battle

Global demand for food could outpace supply as the planet heats up if major food-producing countries like Canada don’t step up adoption of new production technologies, agriculture experts warned this week. “Environmental factors, supply chain disruptions, limited resources and economic viability are all threatening our food systems,” University of Guelph plant-agriculture Prof. Rene Van Acker said in a university news release on Wednesday. “It’s not a question of replacing the great things we do, but rather adding new technologies and new processes to build extra sustainability and resilience, and economic opportunity,” Van Acker added. New food-production methods in need of expansion include growing fruit and vegetables year-round, and the development of meat products directly from animal cells — known as cultured meat — rather than by raising farm animals. Change in food-production approaches may not come easily. A few years ago, a British scientist was vilified when he suggested that half of his country’s farmlands needed to be converted back to natural woodlands to help fight climate change and reduce flooding. Some British livestock farmers were outraged over the prospect of significant reductions in cattle and sheep herds. Meanwhile, experimentation with alternative crops that may thrive in the Thunder Bay farming belt continues. “Winter wheat and winter rye have potential in Northwestern Ontario,” said Tarlok Singh Sahota, director of Lakehead University’s agricultural research facility just west of Thunder Bay.

How Open Web Innovation Will Change The Way We ShopMotorsport legend Tony Stewart has taken a side in the ongoing legal battle between NASCAR and 23XI Racing, co-owned by driver Denny Hamlin and NBA icon Michael Jordan , and Front Row Motorsports. Stewart made the decision earlier in the year to close down Stewart-Haas Racing's NASCAR endeavors, along with his partner Gene Haas. Despite leaving the world of NASCAR from a team point of view, Stewart still remains as an important voice in the sport. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports announced that they had launched a lawsuit against NASCAR and its chairman Jim France in October, accusing the sport of using monopolistic practices. The teams shared at the time, as previously reported by Newsweek Sports : "We share a passion for racing, the thrill of competition, and winning. Off the racetrack, we share a belief that change is necessary for the sport we love. Together, we brought this antitrust case so that racing can thrive and become a more competitive and fair sport in ways that will benefit teams, drivers, sponsors, and, most importantly, fans." Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing, also commented at the time: "It's actually pretty simple in my opinion. When I look around, I see that the best and most competitive sports in the world understand that when teams thrive, fans benefit, and that everyone who invests in making the sport a success should share fairly in that success. With the right changes, we can certainly make that a reality in racing." The legal process is still ongoing. Now, Stewart has given his verdict on the charter agreements which he brands "a joke". During an appearance on Cars and Culture with Jason Stein (below), Stewart explained: "The charter agreements are a joke. "And if people aren't smart enough to read between the lines – when someone like Rick Hendrick says, 'I just got tired of arguing with them,' do you think Rick Hendrick runs his business and negotiations and just says, 'I'm going to just sign this agreement because I'm tired of arguing with you.' Rick Hendrick's never done that a day in his life. "So, if people aren't smart enough to read between the lines and figuring out what that means, then you're all missing the whole big picture all by itself. So, it's just an area I don't want to be a part of anymore. I'm a purist, I'm an old-school guy when it comes to racing."

Tech Giants Stumble! Tesla, Nvidia, and Microsoft Hit Hard. The Off-Broadway production of “ The Merchant of Venice ” opened Off-Broadway on November 25th at the Classic Stage Company in Manhattan. The cast features Richard Topol, Alexandra Silber, Gus Birney, José Espinosa, Tess Goldwyn, Stephen Ochsner, T.R. Knight, Delilah Napier, Noah Pacht, and Elan Zafir. It is based on the Shakespearean play of the same name, which has always been known as one William Shakespeare’s most problematic plays. The synopsis is: This adaptation of “The Merchant of Venice” was directed by Ukrainian-born, Jewish theater artist Igor Golyak. It starts off as a while ride, which takes a startling and tragic turn, leaving the audience shocked and unable to stop the inevitable and unbearable consequences. Richard Topol and T.R. Knight deliver commanding lead, dialogue-heavy performances as Shylock and Antonio respectively. José Espinosa is charming and steals every scene he is in as Bassanio, where the viewer can recall Philip Bruenn in “Studio City” meets Kyle Fragnoli . Alexandra Silber is bubbly and stunning as Portia. The puppetry, bubble machines, Batman masks, props, and contemporary songs are an additional treat to the show. This concept deals with superheroes and their adversaries battling it out to protect good in the face of evil. The question is whether or not justice and love will prevail. The actors and the audience will try to find answers to these intriguing questions. Several of the anti-Semitic undertones might anger some viewers, but it intriguing to watch Igor Golyak distinct re-imagined interpretation of this play. The show runs at the Classic Stage Company in New York City until December 22nd. Overall, “The Merchant of Venice” is dark, odd, quirky, sometimes outrageous and bizarre, but entertaining nonetheless. The actors do a fine job with the material that they are given, although several parts could have been developed more, while other parts could have eliminated entirely and they wouldn’t have made any difference. This upbeat show is recommended for fans of Shakespeare, especially those that are fond of “The Merchant of Venice.” This reimagined version garners a B- rating. Germany probing possible security lapses after Christmas market attackLOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani is keeping elite company. The Japanese superstar caps 2024 by winning The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the third time, tying him with basketball great Michael Jordan. He trails only four-time winners Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods and LeBron James. “I’m very honored,” Ohtani said through translator Matt Hidaka in an exclusive interview with the AP. ”Obviously all the hard work has paid off. Maybe next year, I’ll get the award again.” In balloting by 74 sports journalists from the AP and its members, Ohtani received 48 votes. He previously won the award in 2023 and 2021 , when he was with the Angels. “Growing up in Japan, I did follow Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods,” he said. “I would see their accolades and how they were successful in the United States.” The AP honor has been given out since 1931. Golfer Babe Didrikson won six times, the most by a man or woman. Swimmer Léon Marchand of France, who won four gold medals at the Paris Olympics, was second with 10 votes in balloting announced Monday. Golfer Scottie Scheffler, whose victories this year included the Masters and an Olympic gold medal, was third with nine. The AP Female Athlete of the Year will be announced Tuesday. Moving from the beleaguered Los Angeles Angels to the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers, Ohtani won his third Most Valuable Player award and first in the National League, led his new team to its eighth World Series championship and created Major League Baseball’s 50/50 club by hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases. Ohtani signed a then-record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers in December 2023. Already a two-way superstar, he embellished his reputation even further despite not pitching all season while he rehabilitated from a second major right elbow surgery he had in September 2023. Ohtani went wild on offense, making every at-bat a must-see moment. The 6-foot-4 designated hitter batted a career-high .310 while easily surpassing his previous career highs in home runs and stolen bases. In September, he reached the previously unheard of 50/50 mark in a performance for the ages . Against the Miami Marlins in Florida, Ohtani went 6 for 6 with three homers, 10 RBIs, two stolen bases and 17 total bases. "It wouldn’t shock me if he went 60/60 and 20 wins a year from now,” Brad Ausmus, who managed the Angels in 2019 during Ohtani’s second season in Anaheim, said recently. “This guy is the greatest athlete to ever play the sport of baseball and there’s not a close second.” Ohtani said he knew the Dodgers' franchise record for most homers in a season was 49. His previous best was 46, set in 2021. "I kind of wanted to get over that bar,” he said. “I was pleasantly surprised I was able to pass that record.” Ohtani carried the Dodgers offensively during the regular season, and he stayed healthy until Game 2 of the World Series. He injured his left shoulder trying to steal second base against the New York Yankees and finished the Series playing hurt. He underwent surgery a few days after the Dodgers celebrated their championship in early November. "I don’t have full range of motion yet, but it feels a lot better,” he told the AP. “There’s no pain. There’s obviously still a little bit of tightness, but slowly but surely it’s getting better.” Ohtani recently received an updated rehab schedule, and he’s focused on the near-term. “It’s the small steps that I think are very important to get me to the ultimate goal, which is to just get back healthy,” he said. Ohtani is also throwing in the 70 mph range, which is typical for pitchers early in the offseason. "I’m going to continue to ramp up slowly,” he said. The Dodgers’ rotation for next season is in flux, and Ohtani is waiting to see how it shakes out. "We may go with a five-man rotation with a bullpen (game), which is what we did a lot during this season or we may have a six-man rotation,” he said. “But it’s all about balancing out when we can get rest and recuperate. We’ll see where that takes us along the playoff chase. I’ve got to obviously pace myself, but again that situation will guide us to how we get there.” The Dodgers open the 2025 season in Japan, where Ohtani is even more closely watched . "My personal goal is to be fully healthy by the time the opening games do start,” he said. “To be able to pitch and hit would be great, but the situation will kind of guide itself.” Each time Ohtani comes to the plate or steps on the mound, there’s great pressure and expectation for him to perform spectacular feats. "I just go out there and try to stay within myself,” he said. “I can only control what I can control and that’s where you trust your teammates. The guys behind me, you trust they’re going to make the plays for you. I don’t really try to overthink it.” Ohtani generated big bucks for the Dodgers off the field, too. Fans traveled from Japan in droves to see him play around the U.S. At Dodger Stadium, they paid extra for tours of baseball’s third-oldest venue narrated by Japanese-speaking guides and to be on the field during pre-game batting practice. A majority of the fans bought Ohtani-branded merchandise, especially his No. 17 jersey. Ohtani’s presence also helped the Dodgers land a bevy of new Japanese sponsors. Because Ohtani prefers to speak Japanese and use an interpreter with the media, he is shrouded in a bit of mystique. Asked before his first postgame series if he was nervous, he dropped a one-word answer in English: “Nope,” which drew laughter. Japanese-born Dodgers manager Dave Roberts observed Ohtani’s behind-the-scenes interactions with his teammates, coaches and staff, and came away impressed. "I really do believe that as good of a ballplayer as he is, he’s a much better person. He’s very kind, considerate, he cares,” Roberts told the AP. “I’m just proud of any fame or glory or award that he receives because he just does it in such a respectful and humble way.” Ohtani relishes his privacy and rarely shares details about himself off the field. That’s why his February announcement via Instagram that he had wed Mamiko Tanaka , a former basketball player, stunned his new teammates and the rest of the world. The following month, after the Dodgers arrived in South Korea to open the season, he was enveloped in scandal when his longtime interpreter and friend , Ippei Mizuhara, was fired by the Dodgers after being accused of using millions of dollars of Ohtani’s money to place bets with an illegal bookmaker. His new teammates rallied around Ohtani, who was found to have no part in the wrongdoing, and publicly it didn’t seem to affect him even if he was privately distressed by it. By June, the uproar had subsided. Mizuhara pleaded guilty to federal bank and tax fraud charges and admitted to stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani. The public got a glimpse of Ohtani’s softer side in August, when his dog Decoy delivered a first pitch to his owner on their shared bobblehead night. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje exchanged an endearing high-five with Ohtani at the plate. As a result, Decoy became a celebrity in his own right, with his breed (pronounced COY-ker-HUND-che) making the list of the most mispronounced words of 2024. He and Ohtani were mentioned during the telecast of last month’s National Dog Show, where the small Spaniel-type breed was among the competitors. "The number of the breed has kind of dwindled, so by him gaining a little bit of popularity hopefully that brings up the number of his breed,” Ohtani said. “I do feel like we were able to, in a small way, contribute to the popularity of the dog and I’m sure Decoy himself would be happy about that.” Ohtani will be looking to top himself next year while eyeing a repeat World Series title. "It’s almost like right now you can lock in the Most Valuable Player in the National League award because no one has that ability or talent,” Roberts said. "I’m just excited to see what ’25 has for Shohei Ohtani.” AP MLB: https://apnews.com/mlb

Got Money Goals for the New Year? Stay on Track With These TipsNEW DELHI: If anyone can stake claim to putting India on four wheels and producing the people's car Maruti 800 , it is Osamu Suzuki , known for his hard-nosed business acumen as much as his no-nonsense attitude and frugal mindset. Suzuki (senior advisor, Suzuki Motor Corporation and former chairman, Suzuki Motor corp), who died on Dec 25 was born in 1930 as Osamu Matsuda and took up the Suzuki family name after marrying the granddaughter of the patriarch of Suzuki Motor Corp. He had the vision and the risk-appetite to bet on India when none of his bigger rivals believed in the market's potential. After all, the market size was under 40,000 units (against 41 lakh units now) and one in 14,000 people owned a car (against 35 per 1,000 now). As govt scouted for partners for state-owned Maruti (set up in 1971 by Sanjay Gandhi to produce affordable car) with a team comprising technocrats R C Bhargava (who at 90 remains Maruti Suzuki 's non-executive chairman) and V Krishnamurthy - the tie-up with Suzuki was almost a non-starter. Suzuki was itself a small and somewhat struggling Japanese carmaker and had nearly passed off the opportunity to come to India. Destiny had other plans and a newspaper report, talking about Daihatsu's interest in the partnering Maruti, got the company moving in quickly after a director informed Suzuki (referred to as 'OS' within the company) about the brewing deal. Suzuki immediately expressed his interest and invited Indian executives to his headquarters at Hamamatsu in Japan, going to the extent of betting his company's full year earnings on the deal. Although Suzuki got a 26% stake in the joint venture with govt, he outsmarted Daihatsu and others, such as Renault, Fiat SpA, Fuji Heavy Industries and Volkswagen. The joint venture agreement was signed in Oct 1982, and in a record time, the Maruti 800, which went on to define refinement, affordability, fuel efficiency and dependability in the Indian car market, was produced from a near-makeshift facility in Gurgaon in Dec 1983. Such was the excitement around the venture that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi handed over the keys of the first car to Harpal Singh, an Indian Airlines employee. Suzuki and his Indian bet never looked back. A hands-on professional, he ran and scaled up Maruti at lightning speed with a hawk's eye on controlling costs, understanding the trends, while inculcating quality manufacturing techniques and famed Japanese processes. "Without his vision and foresight, his willingness to take a risk that no one else was willing to take, his deep and abiding love for India and his immense capabilities as a teacher, I believe the Indian automobile industry could not have become the powerhouse that it has become," Bhargava said in a statement, adding that Suzuki taught him "how best to grow a company and make it competitive". N K Singh, chairman of the 15th finance commission, who was minister (economic) in the Indian embassy in Japan in the early eighties when the partnership was negotiated, recollects how there were discussions with Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Toyota, but Japanese govt indicated that Suzuki may be a better bet, especially because the company had a presence in Pakistan. "Suzuki had great empathy for India and was a big supporter of India arriving on the automobile revolution, which it had missed. He was forward thinking and focused on indigenisation and creating ancillaries with India. He was a harbinger of India's modern auto industry, a crucial sector," Singh said. Suzuki and his project with govt - called Maruti Udyog before the Centre divested its stake in the venture - not only led to modernisation of India's industrialisation engine, but also helped create a robust supplier ecosystem, which also benefited Gurgaon and made it one of the foremost industrial belts in the country (Chennai in Tamil Nadu and Pune in Maharashtra came up later for cars). Suzuki brought in a culture of equality in the way the company was run - there were open-plan offices (no cabins for the senior teams), uniforms were mandated for executives and assembly-line workers, and a single canteen for everyone's needs. Even the cars boasted about value for money, and Suzuki himself embodied the theory with many reports that he travelled economy class when in old age. Suzuki's aggressive posturing and bigger bets on India have seen Maruti, which still has the lion's share of around 40% in India, grow manifold from its small factory in Gurgaon, then expand further to Manesar, and thereafter to Gujarat, as it works its way to double its production capacity from the current two-million units to a four million by 2030. For his work on industrialising India and modernising the car industry, Suzuki was conferred Padma Bhushan in 2007 by govt. Ready to Master Stock Valuation? Toronto police revealed on Thursday that the popstar's sold-out performances, including her motorcade, cost them about $1.9 million. Toronto Police Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue equated the cost per concert to what it takes to police a Toronto Raptors playoff game. For a few days in mid-November, downtown Toronto shimmered with throngs of Swifties in bejeweled outfits to watch the singer-songwriter perform. Met with some skepticism, the "All Too Well" singer was escorted by a police motorcade along the Gardiner Expressway as she made her way to the Rogers Centre. Officers would patrol the decorated arena, handing friendship bracelets to fans in the downtown core, and set up a command centre to manage crowds as well as respond to service calls during the performances. "Our police presence was highly visible and vigilant surrounding the Rogers Centre and the surrounding area, and we received many compliments on social media about the professionalism and positivity of our officers," Pogue said. Pogue told the board the "primary focus" of the service's security planning was to protect the 282,000 concertgoers, and the thousands others who visited the city to celebrate the Eras Tour. "In policing, crowds like these represent a massive 'soft target' and our deployment strategy contained sufficient personnel and measures to mitigate the risk," Pogue said. Months before her Toronto concerts, the three concerts slated in Vienna were cancelled due to a foiled terror plot. The deputy chief noted the incredible energy that pulsed throughout the city then, saying it was "really inspiring to engage directly with so many women and girls." Pogue concluded it would be an opportunity for recruitment, particularly for women. "With this goal in mind, I invited 25 women members to engage with Swift fans and talk about career opportunities for women at the Toronto Police Service," Pogue said.

The Utah Jazz will be back in action on Friday night in Salt Lake City when they host the Phoenix Suns, but good luck guessing what will happen on the Delta Center court. If NBA games were capable of causing whiplash, a lot of Jazz fans would be in neck braces after watching what their team did on the road last week. Utah followed a 27-point loss at Oklahoma City last Tuesday with a jaw-dropping 141-99 blowout victory at Portland on Friday. But the pendulum then swung dramatically back the other direction on Sunday in Sacramento, when the Jazz allowed the Kings to score 141 points while they only put up 97. "Yeah," Jazz coach Will Hardy said after the setback in Sacramento, "we got our butts kicked." Utah makes a quick, one-game pitstop at home against the Suns having lost six of seven and 10 of 12. The Jazz then head out for a five-game holiday trek that has them traveling from Los Angeles to face the Clippers to Detroit, Brooklyn, Cleveland and back to Portland from Dec. 16-26. The Jazz will have to do much better on both ends than they did against the Kings to be competitive in this rough stretch. Sacramento shot 22 of 44 from 3-point range, while Utah made only 38.8 percent of its shots overall. The result wasn't pretty. "That's the way the NBA can feel now," Hardy said. "Games can feel crazy when teams get hot shooting the ball from kind of everywhere." Though neither made significant contributions in the blowout loss, Lauri Markkanen and Kyle Filipowski did return for the Jazz, so their presence could make a difference during this upcoming trek. Keyonte George had a strong game against the Kings, scoring 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting with six assists and four steals. Johnny Juzang scored a season-high 22 in the win at Portland. "We are in this space of guys being in and out, and it's tough for young players to find continuity," Hardy said. "I think for any team to find a level and sustain we do need to have continuity." The Suns wrap up a cross-country, four-game road trip with their second visit to Utah this season. They won 120-112 on Nov. 12. Phoenix has struggled on its trip, falling at New Orleans, Miami and Orlando, and finds itself closer to the bottom of the Western Conference standings than the top. Getting Kevin Durant back from a left ankle injury, which could happen as soon as Friday, would provide a big lift. They are 8-2 this season when Durant teams up with fellow stars Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but 1-9 when Durant is sidelined. Durant, who has missed the last three games and 12 overall this season, is Phoenix's leading scorer (25.8 points per game), followed by Booker (24.9) and Beal (17.8). "You try to put importance on every segment of the season," Suns center Mason Plumlee said. "Just being fully healthy, having everybody, it'd be nice to get rolling and string some wins together. Those stretches can be meaningful. It does bring out a sense of identity if you're able to put some wins together." Gonzaga appeared to confirm the transfer by reposting the news on social media. Warley, who has 96 college games (58 starts) under his belt, will use a redshirt this year and spend 2025-26 in Spokane, Wash. Warley played three seasons at Florida State before transferring to Virginia before the 2024-25 season. He was allowed to enter the transfer portal again following the surprise retirement of coach Tony Bennett just three weeks before the season. With the Seminoles, Warley averaged 6.0 points, 2.9 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. His junior year was his best, as he put up 7.5 points, 2.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game over 33 appearances (32 starts). --Field Level MediaKYTX Investors Have Opportunity to Lead Kyverna Therapeutics, Inc. While taking a luxury break in Dubai with his wife Sue, Noel couldn't hide his dismay at the posh eatery's subpar roast, especially when compared to the hearty and budget-friendly British classic back home. Sharing their culinary misadventure with their fans, the Radford duo, who gained fame appearing on 15 Kids and Counting (now boasting 22) and chronicling their bustling household on YouTube, expected more from their anniversary meal as they prepare for daughter Millie's wedding. During their stay at an upscale resort in the United Arab Emirates, Noel expressed his grievances in a vlog on their channel, showcasing the disappointing dishes and labeling the meal "the worst one we ever had". Morecambe-based baker Noel vented, "I hate complaining, never complain about anything but we went out for a meal today, for a Sunday roast, and it's the worst one we ever had." He slammed the dish as "awful" and vastly inferior to a Toby Carvery, while Sue diplomatically remarked on the overly thin and bacon-like beef. Cautious not to disclose the establishment's name, Noel was baffled by its celebrity endorsements, bemoaning the fatty cuts of meat and the gravy that didn't tickle his taste buds. LOST IN NEW YORK ON THE SUBWAY — And what that means is, you’re on an E train because you stood on the wrong platform for C train you wanted, and there it goes, goodbye, and here you are, boarding the E train — vaguely aware of it — for the sake of doing something other than just waiting 12 minutes for the train you want. We can get into tangles that way. We can also end up in a better spot than we’d planned. During Nebraska’s 2024 season, it seemed like, more than once, NU sought more trouble than it had already caused by waiting for Matt Rhule’s initial staff to win big. Offensive gaffes cost the Huskers in 2023, while special teams blew up in Nebraska’s face in 2024. The offensive issues lingered, too; backs and receivers didn’t execute with purpose or precision. Rhule moved briskly to address the first issue by hiring, midseason, a new offensive coordinator. Dana Holgorsen was a good risk — given his Air Raid background, an odd pairing for the Big Ten — who paid off. NU went 2-2 in his four games calling plays, quarterback Dylan Raiola played more crisply, and when the Huskers absolutely needed the offense to come through, it did, triggering on-field confetti and postgame cigars. “I was fired up for our offense,” Rhule said. “It was the first time the offense took the ball and said enough is enough and went down the field.” The coach was full of rhetorical gems Saturday, and it’s credit to him that he could treat the Pinstripe Bowl win as something more than barely escaping defeat. Rhule has a gift for making three hours on a football field larger than the final score, and his tribute to Rahmir Johnson — who won MVP honors and rushed for 60 yards — gave a glimpse into why Rhule recruits transfers and high school players well. “I hope he wears his pads home on the subway and goes to his apartment, takes that MVP trophy and takes it out tonight somewhere,” Rhule said. Couldn’t have written it better. Rhule’s a football romantic in an age of social media-fueled, hard-bitten realists. He lives the journey of each season, which, at roller coaster Nebraska, can take a toll of his own. NU notched its first winning season since 2016 — what everyone wanted — and now, almost naturally, fans want to know how Rhule will rectify copious special teams debacles. He promises an “overhaul.” Sounds good. That unit needs one as Rhule and the Huskers aim to make a big jump in 2025. The plotting for that, as Rhule knows, begins now. Don’t count on the rest of the Big Ten standing still. Someone is going to be 2025’s version of 2024 Indiana. The expectation among many fans, fair or not, is that Rhule, in Year 3 of his tenure and Year 2 of Dylan Raiola’s career, will develop a team capable of 10 or 11 wins. The Leap Year is now upon us. Nebraska’s outgoing seniors, with some help from Raiola, Jacory Barney and a few others, produced a competitive 12-13 record over Rhule’s first two seasons, even if NU, with its 3-10 record in one-score games, still seems to be “Chasing 3” headed into the offseason. But Ty Robinson, Isaac Gifford, Bryce Benhart, Rahmir Johnson, John Bullock, Javin Wright, Ben Scott and Co. are gone now. So are four of the coaches off Rhule’s first staff — it could be more by the end of January. NU will need new player leadership and a renewed assistant-coach-player dynamic, all in a revenue-sharing era where it’s going to be fairly obvious — because it’s coming from the school itself — who’s getting paid more. Raiola will rightly get financial priority. So will the line of scrimmage, if you listen to what Rhule likes to emphasize. “We believe that the game is won primarily at the line of scrimmage,” Rhule said. “You have to be able to run the ball, stop the run. You have to be able to protect and affect the passer.” Rhule, now coach and de facto general manager, will be tasked with molding a tough team that’s also, despite all the changes, together. He already has Raiola in the fold and will need him as a locker room culture guy; Raiola has to take captain-level ownership of the whole team, pronto. No. 15 seems up for the task, too. Defensively, Rhule will have to meld an innovative mind — new coordinator John Butler — with old hand Phil Snow, coordinator-level defensive backs coach Addison Williams and two defensive line coaches coming from vastly different ends of the sport, as Phil Simpson spent years in the prep ranks while Terry Bradden has been coaching for the Kansas City Chiefs. These are compelling parts, particularly Butler, who folks around the program see as brilliant. Can they make a great staff? And will Rhule take more of the special teams load? Rhule wants that unit to be a playmaking group, and sometimes a big play is made, like the fake punt pass from Brian Buschini to Gifford. Sometimes the other team makes the play. I’ve long been lukewarm on criticism of special teams coaches — the HC sets the tone there. When Bo Pelini wanted to fix his punt return unit after a rough 2013 season, he took the job himself, taught the schemes, and got results. Likewise, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz watched Nebraska punk the Hawkeyes’ punt unit in the 2014 game and over time developed the nation’s best special teams unit. He coaches to it, as well. In 2022, Scott Frost had a special teams coordinator, Bill Busch. Who took the hit for the onside kick in Ireland? Frost did. As he should’ve. Rhule can hire and fire whoever he pleases there. The successes and failures are his. Rhule will get a bit of time to reflect on 2024, but not much. So many variables crop up during a season that nine months are spent planning for every contingency — including waiting for the wrong train, or even getting on it. Nebraska ended this season the way it began: With its promise and its flaws in a 12-round fight. By that mucky afternoon in Yankee Stadium, potential won out by a bit. In 2025, Rhule, his coaches, players and NU fans expect that potential to win by a lot. NU’s moved into its new football palace. Its quarterback has a base of knowledge and year’s worth of tape from which to learn. The defense seems to have more four-star generals — including Rhule — than any time in Husker history. If Nebraska can fix special teams — if — well... Rhule and those seniors built the bridge to 2025. Now, the Leap Year is upon us. On with the Rewind. Defensive tackle Ty Robinson: A beast in his final game, with a sack, two tackles for loss, four hurries and a couple devastating blocks on key Husker running plays. He’ll be hard to replace, even if there’s a guy who has the physical tools to do it, Missouri transfer Williams Nwaneri. Running back Rahmir Johnson: A smaller back who always ran with the heart and the style of a big one, Johnson played the game fearlessly at Nebraska. He’s a poet, too, and, one day, he should have one heck of a poem about this season, and Saturday afternoon. Linebacker Vincent Shavers: Five tackles — two for loss — and the feeling that he was literally everywhere on the field, all at once. Pencil him in as a starting middle linebacker. Who plays next to him? John Bullock and Javin Wright, both of whom had strong games, just finished their Nebraska careers. Tight ends Thomas Fidone and Luke Lindenmeyer: Key pieces of the game, with Fidone grabbing five catches in 31 snaps and Lindenmeyer playing 49 snaps. Holgorsen’s made clear that, if you’re playing tight end in this offense, you’re blocking, a lot. Even if Fidone were to go to the NFL — he could, and potentially be a third day NFL Draft pick — Nebraska is in decent shape at the position. Edge rusher MJ Sherman: Starting with the Ohio State game — and perhaps excluding the UCLA game — the Georgia transfer really cranked up his level of play on the edge. He made the fourth down stop late in the second quarter against BC and six total pressures against the Eagles, according to Pro Football Focus. Receiver Jahmal Banks: Four catches, 89 yards, good blocking, and tough grabs in miserable playing conditions. He finished the season with 44 catches for 587 yards and three touchdowns. If you’re ranking NU transfer receivers, he’s behind Trey Palmer and Samori Toure, but ahead of the others. Quarterback Dylan Raiola: College football social media has become too much of a joyless dirge. Online criticism for Raiola’s celebration around Yankee Stadium seemed off-base. Do we not want to see people happy? He’s poised for a big Year 2 if he keeps working on his footwork — cut down on the fadeaway throws — and runs a little more. Cornerback Donovan Jones: Hello, Omaha North! The former Viking played exceedingly well in NU’s defensive backfield, given he was tasked with doing it for the first time. It was stunning to see Jones, who redshirted and played three snaps against UTEP, suddenly leaping the depth chart over Blye Hill, Jeremiah Charles and more. His work in practice clearly caught Butler’s eye. Left tackle Gunnar Gottula: The future’s bright for him after a strong game against Boston College’s pass rush. Nebraska needs one or two tackles out of the portal and some good injury news on either Turner Corcoran or Teddy Prochazka. Boston College quarterback Grayson James: Earned praised from Rhule for his play against a tough Nebraska pass rush. James threw several third down darts and scrambled for a few first downs, too. Without the benefit of a run game, he kept BC competitive. Yankee Stadium — with one exception: This stadium, wedged into the hard-edged Bronx cityscape, is a stunner. First class, fortress-like design, authoritative-but-helpful stadium workers, good food (for the media and the masses). It’s an exceedingly impressive venue — that did not have turf suited for a December football game in the rain. The grass didn’t kick up in tufts, like I once saw at Notre Dame, but sat below the thinnest film of water that turned the playing surface into a Slip ‘N Slide. People watching on TV could compare what they saw in the Pinstripe Bowl with a much more lush-seeming grass at Fenway Park, and note the difference. 226.3: Passing yards per game for Dylan Raiola in four games under Holgorsen’s leadership. That’s nine more yards per game than he averaged for the entire season, and 12 more yards per game than he averaged under former offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield. Raiola completed 71.4% of his passes with Holgorsen, 67.2% for the whole season and 64.9% with Satterfield. The numbers, to some degree, speak for themselves. 18: Catches by the tight ends over the last four games of the season. That’s six by Thomas Fidone, five by the now-transferred Nate Boerkircher, four from Luke Lindenmeyer, two from Carter Nelson and one from Heinrich Haarberg, who has now moved to the position. The backs had 28 catches over those final four games under Holgorsen. NU’s staff feels like it’ll have more and better receiver options in 2025 — coaches are particularly excited for Kentucky transfer Dane Key — but the tight end and back numbers show Holgorsen’s interest in a high completion rate getting yards after the catch. 30: Sacks for the season, which is down two from 2024, when the Huskers appeared better at rushing from depth (Luke Reimer was still on the team) and former defensive coordinator Tony White was a tad more aggressive. We saw that aggression from new defensive coordinator John Butler Saturday, and it paid off with three sacks and John Bullock’s forced fumble, which set up NU’s last touchdown. Because of transfer portal departures, Nebraska lacked its usual edge rushing prowess, but coaches hope portal additions Dasan McCullough and Jaylen George help clear that up. 40.7: Opponents’ fourth down conversion rate. That currently ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 15th nationally, and NU’s fourth down defense played the largest role in wins over Rutgers (2 of 6 on fourth down) and Boston College (0 of 4). Colorado, which turned out to be Nebraska’s best win of the year, only converted 1 of 3 in the Huskers 28-10 victory back in September. 4-10: Nebraska’s record, under Rhule, when it loses the in-game battle in turnover margin. NU finished 3-7 in 2023 — with wins over Illinois, Northwestern and Purdue — and 1-3 this season, with losses to Indiana, UCLA and Iowa and the win, at season’s end, over Boston College. For the season, Nebraska finished -2 in turnover margin, its best figure since 2019, when the Huskers finished at 0. Raiola threw 12 interceptions — down four from 2023 — and, more importantly, Nebraska lost just seven fumbles, down from 15 in 2023. Under Rhule, the Huskers are 6-1 when they win the turnover battle, 2-2 when they break even and 4-10 when they lose it. After each game, I ask fans for their feedback on NU’s play. Selected and edited responses follow. Fred Wedemeyer: “Defense was outstanding, offense was pretty good other than a few mistakes, but wow, is there any other program in the country with worse special teams?” Jay Hoffman: “A cathartic Husker bowl win for a team that has been through a lot. I was in the stands and saw several fans noticeably emotional and immensely appreciative watching Johnson win the MVP. We can worry about special teams next week. Time to pop the bubbly and celebrate.” Michael Messerly: “Moving forward bowl games need to stop being played at baseball stadiums. The playing surface at Yankee stadium is atrocious.” Travis Hawkinson: “Loved what I saw from younger players. Wish we had one more year of (Jahmal) Banks. That would truly give us some great WRs. He really looked way better under Holgorsen than he did under(Marcus) Satterfield.” Cincinnati football — Nebraska’s first opponent in 2025 — is a program still making the leap from Group of Five conference power to a Big 12 team. Since joining its new league, UC Is 8-16 overall and 4-14 in league games. This includes a five-game losing streak to end the 2024 season and put coach Scott Satterfield, finishing his second year with the Bearcats, on a seat just as hot as the one Luke Fickell, Cincinnati’s former coach, sits on at Wisconsin. Defense is the issue; UC allowed 6.67 yards per play last season and 6.07 yards per play in 2024. On offense, Cincinnati returns quarterback Brendan Sorsby — previously at Indiana — after he threw 18 touchdown passes in 2024. He’s a keeper, as is tight end Joe Royer, who spent three years as a Ohio State backup before coming to Cincy and breaking Travis Kelce’s single-season tight ends reception record with 50 grabs for 521 yards and three scores. The Bearcats will open a new football practice facility this summer, and obviously didn’t want to turn down the financial opportunity afforded to them by playing in Arrowhead Stadium, where Nebraska will have 50,000 fans — at least. A satisfied Husker fan base settles in for a winter of Fred Hoiberg’s basketball team — Brice Williams is a sneaky possible Big Ten player of the year candidate — and portal watchin’ for that needed offensive lineman. NU football returns to offseason workouts in late January with genuine momentum. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

The automotive sector is one of the largest and oldest industries. Due to its importance in our society and the overall economy, investors might be looking at this market to find potential businesses to own for the long haul. Perhaps Ford Motor Company ( F 0.27% ) , which has been around for over a century, has caught your attention. Is this auto stock a smart buying opportunity right now? Here are three factors interested investors should think about to help guide their decision-making process. Growth potential Businesses posting surging revenue get a lot of love from investors. Ford doesn't fall into this category. In fact, its growth prospects aren't anything to write home about. In the last 10 years, between Q3 2014 and Q3 2024 (ended Sept. 30), this company saw its sales rise at a compound annual rate of just 2.8%. And based on Wall Street estimates, Ford's projected revenue in 2026 will be less than 1% higher than the expected total for 2024. That's not an encouraging outlook. It partly comes down to the industry, which is very mature. The number of passenger vehicles on the road in the U.S. has increased by only 13.9% between 2012 and 2022, according to the Auto Care Association. There clearly isn't any growth spurt that will occur, even with the wave of electric vehicles (EV) being pushed to consumers. I believe it's reasonable to assume car unit growth to trend as it has in the past. This does not give Ford a robust backdrop to boost its sales over the long term in any significant way. Ford's profitability Another area that investors should analyze is profitability. Companies generating positive earnings are generally preferable to those that post ongoing losses, as it indicates a financially viable business model. To be clear, Ford is consistently profitable. But not by much. It generated $880 million in operating income in the third quarter on $46.2 billion in total revenue, translating to an operating margin of 1.9%. In the past decade, it's been the same story, as the operating margin has averaged an extremely disappointing 2%. I'll also call out Ford's return on invested capital (ROIC) of 1.8%. This is substantially lower than the 10% average of the S&P 500 . A weak ROIC figure indicates the lack of an economic moat, which is a trait all investors should look for in the businesses they might own, in my opinion. Maybe it's just the nature of the auto industry that doesn't lend itself to having many businesses that are thriving financially. Expenses are high, particularly for research and development, labor, and manufacturing. And competition is fierce, from both domestic and international rivals. This unfavorable setup makes it difficult for Ford to stand out and produce outsize profits, something that should discourage potential investors. Investor returns If you're considering making an investment in Ford, it's important to also think about the possibility of earning an adequate return on your initial capital outlay. Historically, buying the stock has been a poor use of capital, as Ford has generated a total return of 20% in the last 10 years, trailing the S&P 500's 246% return by an incredibly wide margin. The company's 5.27% dividend yield can be a draw for income-seeking investors. But this sizable payout is masked by the stock price's poor performance. The current valuation also doesn't help. As of this writing, shares trade at a price-to-earnings ratio of 13. That multiple is double that of General Motors and more than 4 times as expensive as Stellantis . The potential for disappointing shareholders returns, supported by weak growth prospects and subpar profitability metrics, means that Ford stock isn't a smart investment to make right now.Rice 35, South Florida 28

Published 21:55 IST, November 30th 2024 The Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani spoke out on recent allegations levelled against him after being linked to an alleged bribery case in the US. Jaipur: The Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani on Saturday spoke out on the recent allegations faced by him and other executives after being linked to an alleged bribery case in the US, saying that every attack has made the group stronger, and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group. Speaking at the 51st India Gem and Jewellery Awards in Jaipur, the Adani Group Chairman said, "Less than two weeks back, we faced a set of allegations from the US about compliance practices at Adani Green Energy. This is not the first time we have faced such challenges. What I can tell you is that every attack makes us stronger, and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group." "The fact is that despite a lot of the vested reporting, no one from the Adani side has been charged with any violation of the FCPA or any conspiracy to obstruct justice," the Adani Group Chairman added. The Adani Group Chairman also reflected on the consistent allegations made against his companies, including the attempt made by US short seller Hindenburg. "January last year, just as we were getting ready to launch our Follow-on Public Offering. We faced a short-selling attack initiated from abroad. This was not a typical financial strike; it was a double hit--targeting our financial stability and pulling us into a political controversy," he said. "But even in the face of such adversity, our commitment to our principles remained strong. After successfully raising 20,000 crore rupees from India's largest-ever FPO, we made the extraordinary decision to return the proceeds. We then further demonstrated our resilience by raising capital from several international sources and proactively reducing our Debt to EBITDA ratio to below 2.5 times, an unmatched metric in the global infrastructure space," he added. Gautam Adani stated that the company's all-time record financial results in the same year showcased its commitment to operational excellence. "Our all-time record financial results in the same year showcased our commitment to operational excellence. Not a single Indian or foreign credit rating agency downgraded us. Finally, the Supreme Court of India's affirmation of our actions validated our approach," he said. Gautam Adani also mentioned the 2010 controversy when the company made a move to invest in a coal mine in Australia. "The resistance from NGOs was huge and lasted almost a decade. In fact, it was so intense that we ended up funding the entire project of 10 billion dollars with our own equity. While we now have a world-class operating mine in Australia and it could be seen as a great sign of our resilience, the fact is that 100% equity funding took away over 30 billion dollars of debt financing from our green energy projects," he recollected. Gautam Adani further added that he had come to accept that the roadblocks were the price of pioneering. "I have come to accept that the roadblocks we face are the price of pioneering. The more bold your dreams, the more the world will scrutinize you. But it is precisely in that scrutiny that you must find the courage to rise, to challenge the status quo, and to build a path where none exists. To pioneer is to embrace the unknown, to break limits, and to believe in your vision even when the world cannot yet see it," he asserted. In his speech, the Adani Group chairman gave the audience three guiding thoughts: "First, embrace technology and sustainability as the twin pillars of progress... Second, empower and uplift the skilled workforce at the heart of our transformation... And finally, the future belongs to our youth. The younger generation brings fresh ideas, unshakeable energy, and a willingness to disrupt the old ways of thinking. We must nurture them." "Let us create an India where the wisdom of tradition and the promise of innovation come together to challenge the status quo. And let us move forward with confidence to create a future where India's gems illuminate the world with their brilliance," Gautam Adani concluded. The 26 Best Black Friday Deals From Best Buy (2024)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs against a bloc of nine nations if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. His threat was directed at countries in the so-called BRIC alliance, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have applied to become members and several other countries have expressed interest in joining. While the U.S. dollar is by far the most-used currency in global business and has survived past challenges to its preeminence, members of the alliance and other developing nations say they are fed up with America’s dominance of the global financial system . The dollar represents roughly 58% of the world’s foreign exchange reserves, according to the IMF and major commodities like oil are still primarily bought and sold using dollars. The dollar's dominance is threatened, however, with BRICS' growing share of GDP and the alliance's intent to trade in non-dollar currencies — a process known as de-dollarization. Trump, in a Truth Social post, said: “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy." At a summit of BRIC nations in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of “weaponizing” the dollar and described it as a “big mistake.” “It’s not us who refuse to use the dollar,” Putin said at the time. “But if they don’t let us work, what can we do? We are forced to search for alternatives.” Russia has specifically pushed for the creation of a new payment system that would offer an alternative to the global bank messaging network, SWIFT, and allow Moscow to dodge Western sanctions and trade with partners. Trump said there is "no chance" BRIC will replace the U.S. dollar in global trade and any country that tries to make that happen "should wave goodbye to America.” Research shows that the U.S. dollar's role as the primary global reserve currency is not threatened in the near future. An Atlantic Council model that assesses the dollar’s place as the primary global reserve currency states the dollar is “secure in the near and medium term” and continues to dominate other currencies. Trump's latest tariff threat comes after he threatened to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tax on goods from China, as a way to force the countries to do more to halt the flow of illegal immigration and drugs into the U.S. He has since held a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said Thursday she is confident that a tariff war with the United States can be averted. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned home Saturday after meeting Trump, without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on Canada.

Ross Barkley’s 85th-minute goal gave them victory in Germany after goals from John McGinn and Jhon Duran early in each half were cancelled out by Lois Openda and Christoph Baumgartner. That sent them up to third in the new league phase of the competition ahead of Wednesday’s games and with matches against Monaco and Celtic to come, Villa have an excellent chance of finishing in the top eight. Job done... in the end 😅 #RBLAVL #UCL pic.twitter.com/PRD1Hi1Q3A — Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) December 10, 2024 That would mean they would avoid a play-off round to make it through to the last 16 and Emery says that is the target. “Today was key. Juventus at home, we were thinking more to win but in the end we accepted the draw because it was important for a point to be more or less in the top 24,” he told Amazon Prime. “Today was a match we were thinking at the beginning was key to be a contender to be in the top eight with the last two matches to be played. “It is going to be difficult and we have to get some more points but we now have the possibility to achieve this option. “We are going to enjoy and try to get top eight but we have to be happy because we are in the top 24 and maybe even the top 16. “We weren’t contenders in the beginning to get there but now we have to accept it.” Leipzig, who are flying high near the top of the Bundesliga, are out after losing all six matches. They did pose a threat to Villa, who inflicted some of their own problems on themselves, notably a rare gaffe from goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for Openda’s equaliser. But Emery was happy with his side’s performance. “I try to enjoy and always we want to improve and sometimes it is hard but today the team were performing well, playing seriously and I was enjoying it,” he added. “We tried to overcome the mistakes we made and we did. More or less we were playing consistently. Matsoukas stopped 36 shots, but it was enough as the Huskies held on for a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Garnet Chargers to complete the two-game weekend series. The teams played to a 2-2 tie Friday, a game in which Union took a 2-0 lead into the third period. The Garnet Chargers won a nine-round shootout 2-1. St. Cloud State (10-5-3 overall) carried the momentum of Friday’s comeback into Saturday’s first period, firing 21 shots on Matsoukas, who didn’t play Friday. She stopped 20 of them. The only one that got by her was a Sofianna Sunderlin goal midway through the period. “We've gotten good goaltending all year, so we expected that [from Matsoukas],” Union head coach Tony Maci said on the ESPN+ postgame interview. “We've got to learn from this one and put it behind us and get back to ECAC [play]. Union (7-10-1) caught a break when an apparent Avery Farrell goal 2:23 into the second period was waved off after a video review challenge by Union that showed an offsides by St. Cloud State. But the Huskies scored with 7:06 left in the second when Avery Myers poked the puck off of defenseman Kendal Davidson’s stick in front of the Union net and went past Matsoukas. Meanwhile, Union’s offense was non-existent for most of the game. It had two shots on goal through two periods, and both came in the first period. The Garnet Chargers finished with a season-low nine shots on goal. “I thought we left our legs at home for probably a good 55 minutes there,” Maci said. “It’s a good thing Soph played well today, but we’ve got to find ways to come out with more legs on Saturday. “I think we ended up doing what we did last night, kind of the way that they finished. We allowed them to push the pace a little bit. We weren't moving our feet. We were doing too much watching, and that kind of carried over into the second.” With Matosukas out for an extra attacker, Union got a late power play and capitalized on it when Maddie Suitor put a pass from Maddie Leaney past goalie Sanni Ahola with 51.5 seconds left. Unfortunately for Union, it didn’t get another good scoring chance the rest of the way. Union will close out the 2024 portion of its schedule next weekend when it returns to ECAC Hockey play hosting Yale at 6 p.m. Friday and Brown at 3 p.m. Saturday. The game is the first for the Mustangs' basketball team as a member of one of the nation's perennial powerhouse leagues, but don't expect SMU (7-2) to wilt in the spotlight. The Mustangs lambasted Alabama State 101-72 on Tuesday in their most recent outing. Their two losses came against Butler on the road by 11 points and against Mississippi State at home by five. Kario Oquendo poured in a season-high 20 points to lead seven SMU scorers in double figures in the win over Alabama State. Matt Cross added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs while Samet Yigitoglu and Chuck Harris scored 12 points apiece. Yohan Traore and B.J. Edwards each had 11 and Jerrell Colbert hit for 10. "I think it's finally getting to the point where we are starting to figure out how to play as a team," Oquendo said. "You can see it from game to game. We're getting better, and every practice, we're getting better. I believe the more games we play together, the more the things start coming together." SMU is second in scoring per game in the ACC (averaging 88.3 points) and assists per game (16.4). The Mustangs lead the ACC in rebound margin (plus-10.9), total rebound average (43.3 per game) and offensive rebounds (15.2 a game) -- all in all, an impressive start to their campaign. Boopie Miller is the SMU leader in scoring average (15.6 points per game) and assists (5.8), with Cross the top rebounder (7.5 per game). The Cavaliers (5-3) head to Dallas after an 87-69 loss at No. 13 Florida on Wednesday in the SEC/ACC Challenge. Elijah Saunders scored 19 points for Virginia while Isaac McKneely added 12 points -- all on 3-pointers. The Cavaliers, however, had no answer for the Florida defense, committing 15 turnovers that led to 20 points for the Gators. Virginia led 18-9 early but were down by four at halftime. They got to within a point after a deep basket by Saunders in the opening minute of the second half, but that was as close as the Cavaliers would come. "Overall, I was very, very pleased with the first half," Virginia interim coach Ron Sanchez said. "I think that we handled adversity well. This group is on its way of becoming who they're going to be. It's painful growth, but you grow nonetheless." McKneely leads the Cavaliers with 13.1 points per game, followed by Saunders at 10.3. Jacob Cofie is the top rebounder at 6.4 per game, while Andrew Rohde has a team-best average of three assists. The teams have met just once before, with the Cavaliers outlasting SMU 76-73 in the semifinals of the Corpus Christi Challenge on Nov. 29, 2013. --Field Level Media

CHARLESTON, S.C. — AJ Hoggard had 18 points and seven assists, Jason Edwards added 16 points and Vanderbilt held off Nevada 73-71 on Thursday night on the opening day of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic. Kobe Sanders and Tyler Rolison scored 13 points each and Brandon Love added 11 while Nick Davidson had nine points and nine rebounds for Nevada, which shot 54% to Vanderbilt's 47%. Vanderbilt led by 12 points midway through the second half when Nevada rallied to get within a point, 67-66, with two minutes to go. It was 72-71 when McGlockton missed the second of a one-and-one with four seconds remaining before a final Nevada shot from the arc was late and off-target. An 8-0 run early in the second half gave Nevada a lead but the Commodores turned it around quickly with a 12-0 run for the game's first double-digit lead at 53-43 with 13 minutes to go. Vanderbilt led 37-35 at halftime.McDonald’s ( MCD ) is switching gears during a time when an alarming consumer trend is hurting its pockets. An increasing number of consumers, convinced inflation at fast-food restaurants is out of control, are opting instead to cook cheaper meals at home. 💰💸 Don’t miss the move: SIGN UP for TheStreet’s FREE Daily newsletter 💰💸 According to a recent survey from LendingTree, roughly 78% of consumers view fast-food as a luxury. Another 62% of Americans said they eat less fast food due to high prices, and 56% said they choose to make food at home when they want an easy and cheap meal. Related: McDonald’s makes a desperate move to win back fleeing customers To be sure, the cost of eating out has jumped. It was up 7.5% in 2022, and it was still up 4.8% year-over-year, according to the October Consumer Price Index report. And that's even as inflation overall has fallen below 3%. Consumer resistance has contributed to McDonald’s facing declines in its sales and revenue all year, and it has been on a shaky road to recovery. During the third quarter of 2024, McDonald’s revealed that its U.S. comparable sales increased by a measly 0.3% year-over-year, while its net income only shrunk by 3%. To make matters worse, the company faced an E.coli outbreak last month, which sickened more than 100 people, hospitalized 34, and even killed one person. As a result, McDonald’s sales and visits took an extra tumble. McDonald's makes a major menu adjustment Now, McDonald’s is making a bold move designed to attract consumers back into its restaurants, and it appears to be a response to recent complaints about high prices. picture alliance/Getty Images The company just unveiled its new “McValue” menu, which is set to go into effect on Jan. 7, 2025. It contains the fast-food chain’s current $5 Meal Deal, which offers a meal that consists of a McChicken sandwich, four-piece chicken nuggets or a McDouble, along with fries and a drink for $5. The meal deal was expected to expire sometime during the late summer, but it was recently extended after analysts claimed that the deal was struggling to significantly boost traffic in restaurants shortly after it debuted. The new McValue menu also includes a brand-new deal called “Buy One, Add One for $1,” where customers can buy a “full-priced” menu item from the McValue menu and add one more item of their choice for $1, according to a new press release. More Food + Dining: The McValue menu contains breakfast, lunch and dinner items such as hash browns, 6-pc. Chicken McNuggets, Sausage McMuffin, a double cheeseburger, etc. "When it comes to value, we know there's no one-size-fits-all. We've worked closely with our franchisees to create a new platform that will let our customers define value on their own terms," said McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger in the press release. McDonald's responds to complaints about price increases The move from McDonald’s comes after Erlinger said in an open letter in May that the average price of a McDonald’s menu item has increased by roughly 40% since 2019, hitting back at consumers who alleged that prices have been hiked up by over 100% during that time period. “Recently, we have seen viral social posts and poorly sourced reports that McDonald’s has raised prices significantly beyond inflationary rates,” said Erlinger in the letter. “This is inaccurate.” Related: McDonald’s pulls beloved menu items due to major issue According to a recent report from the Roosevelt Institute, the fast-food industry is notorious for charging prices that are higher than their marginal costs (an additional cost incurred to produce a good/service). The institute found that in 2023, McDonald’s raised its prices 85% above its marginal costs. Amid the recent criticism, it appears that McDonald’s is letting consumers know it hears them loud and clear. During an earnings call last month, McDonald’s Chief Financial Officer Ian Borden said that the company will be heavily focusing on “value and affordability” going forward. “I think certainly lower-income consumers and families are consumers that are under more acute kind of pressures,” said Borden. “I think on disposable income, obviously, two really important parts of our consumer base. I think for all of those reasons, that's why obviously we have such a heightened focus on value and affordability and making sure we get that right for the context we're in each and every one of our markets.” Related: Veteran fund manager sees world of pain coming for stocks
