The list of compromised VCE exams has been released more than a week after it was revealed some questions for half the tests were leaked in practice material. Education Minister Ben Carroll had previously revealed that 56 VCE exams – nearly half of the total 116 exams – had been affected by a breach in which exam questions were inadvertently published online in advance by the VCE authority in a “hidden” section of sample assessments. I would like to again apologise to every single student, parent, carer that have been affected by this publication,” Carroll said. Carroll said the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s processes had improved over the years but the government had been let down because of a “publishing error”. “I’ve still got questions that I want answers to and that that is why I have ordered a full root and branch review on how did this occur,” he said. But the relationship was marred by violence and turbulence. "When I was pregnant he started the violence again and he wanted me to have an abortion," she told AAP. She recounted how her ex-husband kicked her out of the house and she bounced around staying at her parents who were pressuring to get back with him, couch surfing with friends and even some nights sleeping in her car. "It was so hard, out of control, I didn't have any support, my relationship with my parents broke down. I was alone in this world." are a Shi'a minority in Afghanistan and have been long persecuted for their ethnicity and religion, which became even more extreme under the hardline Taliban who swept back into power in 2021 unseating the weak US-backed government after the 2001 invasion. Mariam, who is providing a name she uses on social media in order not to be publicly identified for her safety, recently remarried with her husband visiting from Pakistan to be with her when she gave birth to a baby girl last month. With the help of the Melbourne-based charity Avalon Centre she was able to secure a two bedroom unit weeks ago in Dandenong, which has the highest number of homeless people of over 2300 in Victoria according to official figures. Deborah Holmes who heads the volunteer-run organisation says the grassroots provides stable furnished homes for vulnerable members of the community with ongoing casework support. "We've got a mission statement to help where we can, when we can, and in whatever way we can," she told AAP. "We're offering a hand up not a handout." The community organisation owns about 15 properties and relies entirely on donations from the public to pay off the loans. Ms Holmes said every dollar counts towards getting people off the streets and into new homes at a time when around the holidays. She and a team of volunteers worked around the clock to get the place ready for Mariam to move in with her baby earlier this month. RMIT Senior Lecturer Rojan Afrouz, who has conducted extensive research into , explains they contend with cultural barriers such as not being fluent in English as well as regressive community attitudes. "The main point that Afghan women raised was community pressure and shame and blame, and also that cultural and gender norms were stronger here (in Australia) than back in their own countries sometimes," she said. Dr Afrouz said even though domestic violence as a social phenomenon affects women of all backgrounds in Australia, it is doubly hard for refugees who carry multiple levels of trauma. "Afghan women face a lot of stigma and shame when they want to get a religious or civil divorce... sometimes it is more important than access to mainstream services. "This is because the main action that you need to do is making the decision whether you want to leave or not and the social consequences of that," the social work academic explained. She advocated for a woman-centred approach that is consultative in policymaking that ensures their agency is the prime objective. "We have to make sure that we put women's self determination experiences, not community self determination, at the forefront because sometimes minority women's voices are lost." This was Mariam's experience where she felt shunned from the tight-knit community by wanting to flee an abusive relationship. "My mental health was so bad... it was stressful and painful... everyone was blaming no matter what I said." She feels comfortable and safe in her new home with the ongoing support of her social worker and the Avalon Centre vowing to get back on her feet one day at a time. "Alhamdulillah (Thank God) everything is different now. I shut the door and feel safer than before," said Mariam. "My safety and my baby's safety is more important than anything... They suddenly have renewed optimism this week after an uplifting victory over the San Francisco 49ers that snapped a six-game losing streak against their arch-rival that dated to 2021. Seattle will play the first-place Arizona Cardinals (6-4) on Sunday for a share of the NFC West lead. How quickly things change in the NFL. “We’ve earned the opportunity to be fighting for the lead in the division going into the home stretch,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. “So that’s the way we’re treating it. It’s very much like a playoff mindset for us at this point.” The win over the 49ers, which was capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by quarterback Geno Smith with 18 seconds left, put the Seahawks in a much better place mentally than they’d been in over the previous six weeks. They're hoping it's just the start of something even bigger. “It can just spark something that you’ve been looking for this whole year,” wide receiver DK Metcalf said. “I know we started off very hot with the first three games, but, you know, when adversity hit, it’s all about how you respond. I think we responded the right way, and it’s going to carry us throughout the rest of the season.” While the Seahawks are feeling better this week, the Cardinals have plenty of reason to feel optimistic, too. MONACO — Canadians Alex Tessier, Sophie de Goede and Laetitia Royer have been named to World Rugby's Women’s 15s Dream Team of the Year. Canada sevens captain Olivia Apps, meanwhile, was selected to World Rugby's Women’s Sevens Dream Team. The women's 15s world all-star squad also featured six players from top-ranked England and three from No. 2 New Zealand. The other three came from the U.S., Ireland and France. Tessier was also a finalist for the World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year award won by England fullback Ellie Kildunne. France's Pauline Bourdon Sansus and England's Alex Matthews were the other finalists. Tessier won her 50th cap in 2024 and, playing at inside centre alongside fly half Claire Gallagher, led the Canada women to a historic first-ever victory over New Zealand to win the 2024 Pacific Four Series in May. Almost everyone who has taken a flight has experienced or witnessed a seat-swapping situation. Between airline companies overbooking their flights and customers finding it challenging to confirm seats online, it sometimes feels like it's become increasingly common to be privy to this uncomfortable request. Enter Reddit user u/Safe_Ad_9314 , who recently posted on the r/AITAH subreddit, "Am I the a**hole for not giving up my window seat on a plane to a kid just because she threw a tantrum?" Here's what happened : "At this point, the dad leaned over and asked, 'Would you mind switching seats with her? She’s just a kid.'" "I politely explained that I had booked the window seat in advance because I really wanted to enjoy the view. The dad insisted, saying it would be 'nice of me' and that 'it wouldn’t hurt' to switch. I reiterated that I understood his frustration but didn’t think his daughter’s tantrum was a valid reason for me to give up a seat I specifically reserved. He sighed and tried to push further, but I stood my ground." "The girl cried for about 10 more minutes before her mom managed to calm her down with a tablet. However, the tension lingered. Throughout the flight, I could feel the parents throwing me judgmental looks, and when we landed, I overheard the mom muttering something like, 'Some people just have no heart.'" MONACO — Canadians Alex Tessier, Sophie de Goede and Laetitia Royer have been named to World Rugby's Women’s 15s Dream Team of the Year. Canada sevens captain Olivia Apps, meanwhile, was selected to World Rugby's Women’s Sevens Dream Team. The women's 15s world all-star squad also featured six players from top-ranked England and three from No. 2 New Zealand. The other three came from the U.S., Ireland and France. Tessier was also a finalist for the World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year award won by England fullback Ellie Kildunne. France's Pauline Bourdon Sansus and England's Alex Matthews were the other finalists. Tessier won her 50th cap in 2024 and, playing at inside centre alongside fly half Claire Gallagher, led the Canada women to a historic first-ever victory over New Zealand to win the 2024 Pacific Four Series in May. The 22-19 comeback victory lifted Canada into second place in the women’s world rankings, its highest position since November 2016. Tessier's strong kicking game was also key for Canada. The 31-year-old from Sainte-Clotilde-de-Horton, Que., scored 27 points in starting all six matches for Canada in 2024 to up her career total to 48 points (including five tries) in 54 appearances. Tessier plays professionally in England for the Exeter Chiefs. De Goede made the all-star team despite tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in training in June. A finalist for the Women's Player of the Year award in 2022, the Victoria back-rower plays in England for Saracens. NoneMatt Gaetz was Donald Trump ’s nominee for attorney general for eight days. The former Florida congressman’s historically short stint as a presidential pick came to an end on Thursday when he bowed out of consideration, claiming he no longer wanted the frenzy over the sexual misconduct allegations against him to distract from “the critical work of the Trump/Vance administration.” Gaetz has long been under scrutiny for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old girl at a party in 2017. The Justice Department investigated him over that and sex-trafficking allegations, but ultimately declined to bring charges. The House Ethics Committee also investigated Gaetz over the allegations, and was poised to release its findings before Gaetz resigned from Congress last week. The committee’s report was reportedly damning, and there’s plenty to suggest that what is publicly known about Gaetz’s alleged indiscretions is only the tip of the iceberg. CNN reported on Thursday that Gaetz gave up his bid for attorney general less than an hour after the network informed him they were releasing a report about how he allegedly had multiple sexual encounters with the then-minor. Trump’s allies seemed well aware there could be more to Gaetz than meets the public’s eye, and were worried it could have become a problem if Gaetz took the reins of America’s justice system. The recent drip-drip-drip of new revelations about Gaetz’s alleged sexual activities in 2017 — along with the promise of whatever bombshells lay within the ethics committee’s still-unreleased report — inspired an undercurrent throughout Washington, D.C., of chatter, opposition research, and firsthand accounts from members of Congress. The rumblings, according to Republican and Democratic sources, led to concern within the career halls of the Justice Department — as well as among some GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill and even in certain corners of Trump’s orbit — that there was just too much secret, non-public personal baggage to Gaetz’s name that could be used against him. The president-elect lauded him publicly after he withdrew his name from consideration on Thursday, and two sources within Trump’s orbit tell Rolling Stone that they are pushing internally for Gaetz to get a cushy White House job in the incoming Trump administration that would not require Senate confirmation. There is some chance Gaetz could return to the U.S. Capitol — he only resigned from the Congress currently in session, and in November was elected to represent Florida’s 1st District in the session that will convene in January. But Gaetz indicated in his resignation letter that he did not intend to take the oath of office for the next Congress. He might not want to, anyway, given that it would mean he would once again be open to congressional scrutiny over his alleged sexual misconduct, drug use, and other indiscretions. Leaving the Hill to join the Trump administration might make more sense. Gaetz is somehow only one of several Trump administration picks to be connected to sexual misconduct. The media’s attention — as well as that of Senate Republicans — is now likely to shift to Pete Hegseth, the Fox News host who Trump wants to run the Pentagon. Hegseth was on Capitol Hill on Thursday working to calm nerves over his near-total lack of qualifications to serve as Secretary of Defense, as well as a sexual assault allegation leveled against him by a woman who told police he raped her at a Monterey, California, hotel in 2017. Hegseth has denied the account, claiming the encounter was consensual.
