In addition to downgrades to its full-year sales and operating outlooks, it set out to save $3 billion by drastically reducing its Mitsubishi share and cutting 9,000 from its global headcount of over 133,000 employees. 😲 Don’t Miss this amazing Black Friday Move! Our current plan is to reduce the operational maximum capacity of these 25 lines by 20 percent,” Sakamoto said. “One specific method for this is to change the line speed and shift patterns, thereby increasing the efficiency of operational personnel.” RICHARD A. BROOKS/Getty Images Nissan execs ring alarm bells According to a new report by the Financial Times , unnamed senior officials near Nissan note that the automaker is beginning to exist on borrowed time as it seeks an anchor investor to get it through the year. “We have 12 or 14 months to survive,” the senior official told FT. "This is going to be tough. And in the end, we need Japan and the US to be generating cash." Related: Nissan CEO delivers tough-luck news to workers This crisis comes as Renault is selling its significant stake in Nissan. Previously, the French automaker owned up to 46% of Nissan, but its share has dwindled to under 36%. The sources who spoke with the FT noted that the company is looking for a new long-term investor, such as a bank or large insurance group, to replace some of Renault's equity holdings. Earlier this month, Nissan's CEO's drastic moves attracted the Singapore-based activist investment group Effissimo Capital Management and the Hong Kong-based Oasis Management Group to take their own stakes in Nissan. These firms are touted as secretive players known for shaking up major Japanese corporations. Previously, Oasis led a push at Nintendo to make mobile games, which led to the success of the popular app Pokémon Go — from which it raked in tens of millions as a result, as per the Wall Street Journal. The former, Effisimo, made close to $768 million after its very proactive investment in Toshiba led to a buyout in 2023. More Automotive: A Honda takeover of Nissan? However, the sources also note that the company hasn't ruled out the possibility of longtime rival Honda taking a majority stake in Nissan, noting that "all options" are being considered. Renault notes that a more prominent Honda-Nissan partnership would "only be positive" for the French automaker. Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi are currently in a joint venture to share EV technology to accelerate the development of EVs. Before Mitusbishi joined, Nissan and Honda agreed to "mutual vehicle complementation," which allows them to share models and complete each other's lineups of EVs and gas-powered cars. "Collaboration with partners is essential in today's automotive industry, which is undergoing rapid changes due to technological innovations such as electrification and intelligence," Mitsubishi Motors CEO Takao Kato said in a statement. "We believe that we can discover new possibilities in various fields through collaboration among the three companies." Former Nissan CEO thinks alliance is a hidden sinister plot Nissan's former CEO makes bold speculation The mention of Honda stands out, as a few months ago, former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn alleged that there is more to the story of the Honda-Nissan-Mitsubishi joint partnership. More Automotive: In an interview with Automotive News, the former Nissan CEO alleged that Honda was plotting a "disguised takeover" of Nissan and Mitsubishi, noting that Honda was the biggest of the three Japanese automakers. "I can't imagine for one moment how it's going to work between Honda and Nissan unless it's a takeover, unless it's a disguised takeover by Honda of Nissan and Mitsubishi with Honda in the driver's seat," Ghosn said. Nissan's money-crunching situation is still real No matter who or where Nissan shares and/or ownership go, the automaker still has a dire situation on its hands. A recent report from Automotive News reports that Nissan told its suppliers that it expects to cut production in its US facilities by 17% during its 2024 fiscal year, which ends on March 31. The reduced production reflects a 20% global production cut. In a planning document sent to suppliers that AutoNews saw, Nissan said it now expects to build just 503,202 vehicles at its Canton, Mississippi, and Smyrna, Tennessee factories, a large cut from the 605,435 cars it built within the last fiscal year. These cuts will affect the production of some of Nissan's top sellers, including the Frontier midsize pickup and the Rogue crossover SUV. The cuts also call for reduced output of the Pathfinder SUV and the QX60 SUV from its luxury Infiniti wing. Related: Veteran fund manager sees world of pain coming for stocks

Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) coach Greg Schiano then called for a timeout right before Moczulski’s attempt was wide left and about 15 yards short. After the missed field goal was waved off by the timeout, Illinois coach Bret Bielema sent his offense back on the field. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks drifted to a mixed close, as gains for tech stocks nudged the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq to more records. The S&P 500 eked out a gain of under 0.1% Tuesday, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.2%. Treasury yields held relatively steady after a report showed U.S. employers were advertising slightly more job openings at the end of October than a month earlier. The value of the South Korean won sank against the dollar after its president declared martial law and then later said he’ll lift it. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are drifting around their records on Tuesday as Wall Street's white-hot rally lets off the accelerator. The S&P 500 was virtually flat in afternoon trading, a day after rising tech stocks helped it set an all-time high for the 54th time this year. It's climbed in nine of the last 10 days and is on track for one of its best years since the turn of the millennium. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 56 points, or 0.1%, with 45 minutes remaining in trading, while the Nasdaq composite added 0.2% to its own record set a day earlier. AT&T rose 3.9% after it boosted its profit forecast for the year. It also announced a $10 billion plan to send cash to its investors by buying back its own stock, while saying it expects to authorize another $10 billion of repurchases in 2027. On the losing end of Wall Street was U.S. Steel, which fell 7.9%. President-elect Donald Trump reiterated on social media that he would not let Japan’s Nippon Steel take over the iconic Pennsylvania steelmaker. Nippon Steel announced plans last December to buy the Pittsburgh-based steel producer for $14.1 billion in cash, raising concerns about what the transaction could mean for unionized workers, supply chains and U.S. national security. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden also came out against the acquisition. Tesla s sank 2.1% after a judge in Delaware reaffirmed a previous ruling that the electric car maker must revoke Elon Musk’s multibillion-dollar pay package. The judge denied a request by attorneys for Musk and Tesla’s corporate directors to vacate her ruling earlier this year requiring the company to rescind the unprecedented pay package. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady after a report showed U.S. employers were advertising slightly more job openings at the end of October than a month earlier. Continued strength there would raise optimism that the economy could keep avoiding a recession that many investors had earlier thought was inevitable. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.22 from 4.20% from late Monday. Yields have seesawed since Election Day amid worries that Trump's preferences for lower tax rates and bigger tariffs could spur higher inflation along with economic growth. But traders are still confident the Federal Reserve will cut its main interest rate again at its next meeting in two weeks. They’re betting on a nearly three-in-four chance of that, according to data from CME Group. Lower rates can help give the economy more juice, but they can also give inflation more fuel. The key report this week that could guide the Fed’s next move will arrive on Friday. It’s the monthly jobs report , which will show how many workers U.S. employers hired and fired during November. It could be difficult to parse given how much storms and strikes distorted figures in October. Based on trading in the options market, Friday's jobs report appears to be the biggest potential market mover until the Fed announces its next decision on interest rates Dec. 18, according to strategists at Barclays Capital. Since his victory, Trump has broadcasted his plans for tariffs , including for goods coming from China . Trade relations between the U.S. and China took another step backward after China said it is banning exports to the U.S. of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications. The counterpunch came swiftly after the U.S. Commerce Department expanded the list of Chinese technology companies subject to export controls to include many that make equipment used to make computer chips, chipmaking tools and software. The 140 companies newly included in the so-called “entity list” are nearly all based in China. In financial markets abroad, the value of South Korea's currency fell 0.9% against the U.S. dollar following a frenetic night where President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law and then later said he'd lift it after lawmakers voted to reject military rule. Stocks of Korean companies that trade in the United States also fell, including a 1.3% drop for SK Telecom. Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 1.9% to help lead global markets. Some analysts think Japanese stocks could end up benefiting from Trump’s threats to raise tariffs on China and other countries. Indexes rose 1% in Hong Kong and 0.4% in Shanghai amid unconfirmed reports that Chinese leaders would meet next week to discuss planning for the coming year. Investors are hoping it may bring fresh stimulus to help spur growth in the world’s second-largest economy. In France, the CAC 40 rose 0.3% amid continued worries about politics in Paris , where the government is battling over the budget. ___ AP Business Writers Yuri Kageyama and Matt Ott contributed. Stan Choe, The Associated PressLINCOLN — Before Tuesday night came to an end, Nebraska’s defense took another roster hit with defensive lineman James Williams planning to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports. Williams, a Sophomore, played two seasons for the Huskers after transferring from Iowa Central Community College. He recorded 18 tackles and seven sacks over his career in Lincoln. He finished with 14 tackles and five sacks this past regular season, which ended with Friday’s 13-10 loss at Iowa. Williams played in all 12 of Nebraska’s regular season games in a reserve role. Williams became the third Nebraska player to announce their intentions to enter the portal on Tuesday, and ninth overall since Monday. Princewill Umanmielen, a sophomore linebacker, and true freshman quarterback Daniel Kaelin also made their announcements on Tuesday. Umanmielen spent two years with Nebraska. He tallied 35 tackles, one pass deflection and 1 1/2 sacks during his two seasons. He finished with 13 tackles and 1/2 sack this year. Umanmielen appeared in all 12 games for the Huskers this season in a reserve role. He logged just two snaps in Friday’s 13-10 loss at Iowa to end the regular season. Kaelin, from Bellevue West, did not appear in any games for Nebraska this season. Kaelin was three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 28 quarterback in the 2024 class. He was originally committed to Missouri before ultimately deciding to stay home and attend Nebraska. Other Nebraska players to announce their transfer portal intentions include: linebackers Stefon Thompson and Mikai Gbayor, defensive lineman Jimari Butler and Vincent Jackson, wideout Malachi Coleman and running back Gabe Ervin. NU hires WR coach Nebraska also had some coaching news on Tuesday, expecting to hire Kentucky’s Daikiel Shorts to be the Huskers’ new wide receivers coach, according to multiple reports. Shorts spent one season at Kentucky, where his wideouts accounted for 1,754 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Shorts is replacing Garret McGuire as the Huskers’ wideout coach, who will reportedly remain on staff in a different role. McGuire just finished his second season coaching Nebraska’s wide receivers. Shorts and Holgorsen have a previous connection, when he was Holgorsen’s wideouts coach for three seasons at Houston. He also spent two years as director of player development for the Cougars. Shorts had a role in developing Tank Dell, now a NFL wideout for the Houston Texans, who finished in the top-15 in catches (90), receiving yards (1,329) and touchdowns (12) during the 2021 season. In 2022, under Shorts’ watch, Houston true freshman wideout Matthew Golden set the program record with seven touchdowns. Shorts played his college career at West Virginia, where he caught 177 passes for 2,263 yards and 14 touchdowns over four seasons from 2013-16, under Holgorsen. With Shorts' expected hiring, Nebraska still has two coaching vacancies to fill, after defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton departed Monday to take the same positions at Florida State.
The recently retired Andy Murray is going to team up with longtime rival Novak Djokovic as his coach, they both announced Saturday, with plans to prepare for — and work together through — the Australian Open in January. It was a stunning bit of news as tennis moves toward its offseason , a pairing of two of the most successful and popular players in the sport, both of whom are sometimes referred to as members of a so-called Big Four that also included Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal . Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam champion who has spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other player in tennis history. Murray won three major trophies and two Olympic singles gold medals and finished 2016 atop the ATP rankings. He ended his playing career after the Paris Summer Games in August. Both men are 37 and were born a week apart in May 1987. They started facing each other as juniors and wound up meeting 36 times as professionals, with Djokovic holding a 25-11 advantage. “We played each other since we were boys — 25 years of being rivals, of pushing each other beyond our limits. We had some of the most epic battles in our sport. They called us game-changers, risk-takers, history-makers,” Djokovic posted on social media over photos and videos from some of their matches. “I thought our story may be over. Turns out, it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner. Welcome on board, Coach — Andy Murray.” Djokovic's 2024 season is over, and it was not up to his usual, high standards. He didn't win a Grand Slam trophy ; his only title, though, was meaningful to him: a gold medal for Serbia in singles at the Summer Games. Djokovic has been without a full-time coach since splitting in March from Goran Ivanisevic. “I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the offseason, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open," Murray said in a statement released by his management team. "I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals.” Their head-to-head series on tour includes an 11-8 lead for Djokovic in finals, and 8-2 at Grand Slam tournaments. Djokovic beat Murray four times in the Australian Open final alone — in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Two of the most important victories of Murray's career came with Djokovic on the other side of the net. One was in the 2012 U.S. Open final , when Murray claimed his first Grand Slam title. The other was in the 2013 Wimbledon final , when Murray became the first British man in 77 years to win the singles championship at the All England Club. Next year's Australian Open starts on Jan. 12. ___ AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennisFacebook Messenger Twitter Whatsapp Email The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, has unveiled a new platform aimed at enhancing medical imaging by leveraging artificial intelligence tools and technology. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agency said Monday it is seeking proposals for the ImagiNg Data EXchange, or INDEX, program. The objective of the funding opportunity is to develop the exchange platform and foster connection between medical imaging data providers, users and services. This is expected to boost the development of AI-enhanced tools for radiology, pathology and surgical imaging. What Is the ImagiNg Data EXchange? The INDEX program is an initiative meant to address the gaps in the development of medical AI tools, particularly the lack of high-quality medical imaging data. Medical imaging is essential for diagnosis and treatment but there is a lack of trained professionals, particularly radiologists and pathologists, that can interpret imaging exams. The use of AI and machine learning can potentially address this issue. Through the INDEX platform, medical software developers can access large volumes of imaging data for training, testing and validating AI/ML applications. Developers can leverage digital pathology, surgical videos, radiological scans and other medical imaging data to enhance these applications. Should the initiative succeed, healthcare providers will be able to process more medical images faster and provide more accurate diagnoses. ARPA-H Director Renee Wegrzyn , remarked, “For AI-enabled medical diagnostic tools to become commonplace in medical settings, we must work to enable consistent performance, which requires large volumes of diverse and representative data for training, testing and validation.” Register now and join Potomac Officers Club as they present the 2024 Healthcare Summit . An accidental chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) on Sunday celebrated the centenary year of another accidental chief minister S Janaki, who took the post in 1987 following the death of her husband and AIADMK’s founder MGR’s (MG Ramachandran’s) death, to become Tamil Nadu’s first woman chief minister but could hold on to the position only for 24 days. Janaki lost out on support to J Jayalalithaa who began to head the AIADMK from 1989. Following Jayalalithaa’s death in office in 2016, EPS who was nowhere close to the race was handpicked to become chief minister and who is now the leader of opposition and AIADMK’s general secretary on Sunday planned a mega event in Chennai. It comes at a time when the AIADMK is at its lowest with the party losing every election since Jayalaalithaa’s death. And while it has splintered into factions with EPS refusing to take back the trio he expelled – VK Sasikala who made him the chief minister, her nephew TTV Dhinakaran and O Panneerselvam with whom he jointly led the AIADMK and the state for five years until 2022. EPS said: “It is normal for a change in government but AIADMK will emerge victorious in the 2026 assembly elections. We are a family party of cadres. We are not like the DMK which is a party of (late) M Karunanidhi’s family.” “Only those in his family can become leaders of the party and govern the state. But, in AIADMK anyone who works hard and is loyal can become the general secretary of the party and even become chief minister,” he said, while referring to the trio he expelled for going against the party’s principles and targeting the elevation of Karunanidhi’s grandson and chief minister MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi as deputy chief minister in September. EPS went on to further compare the AIADMK and the ruling DMK. “We have ruled Tamil Nadu much longer than the DMK. We have ruled for 31 years,” EPS said. “And we gave good governance. Tamil Nadu is in the forefront now because of the schemes laid out by the AIADMK.” At the event, there was an AI generated video of MGR addressing the cadre and praising EPS for following the footsteps of him and Jayalalithaa. Actor Rajinikanth, who couldn’t attend the event, released a video message praising Janaki for handing over the party to Jayalalithaa which led to the factions of the two women to unite under the AIADMK after MGR’s death. Though Rajinikanth is a non-starter in politics, his comments back in the 90s swayed Tamil Nadu’s vote bank. Jayalalithaa lost the 1996 assembly election which has historically been linked to Rajinikanth saying that “even God can’t save Tamil Nadu” if she is voted back to power. “The ‘Two Leaves’ symbol is the Brahmastra of the AIADMK, and madam Janaki played a key role in its retrieval after it was frozen,” said Rajinikanth after the iconic symbol was frozen following MGR’s death and the split. “It was a great sacrifice, and I congratulate the AIADMK for celebrating her centenary.” Janaki had lost the vote of confidence in the assembly before renouncing the reins of the AIADMK. Meanwhile, deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin criticised EPS of leading the AIADMK in a poor way that nobody wants to join their alliance. After the EPS led AIADMK broke of its alliance with the BJP last September, most of the allies except the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) stayed with the national party. “AIADMK’s treasurer Dindigul Srinivasan is himself saying at a party meeting that certain parties were demanding ₹ 100 crore to join their alliance,” Udhayanidhi said. “This shows the state of the AIADMK alliance. But, our DMK-led secular progressive alliance is united and has proven to be a winning coalition.” Responding to EPS who questioned his elevation, sports minister Udhayanidhi said that he was not like EPS who fell on Sasikala’s feet to get the post to head the AIADMK and become chief minister. “My rise from youth wing secretary to MLA, minister, and now deputy chief minister is built on hard work and the people’s trust,” Udhayanidhi said.
Shane Lenon says O and M recruits from the RFL should be four-pointersLocal educators and the ADL are pushing for an apology from MassCUE after the group’s recent “jarring” conference when speakers reportedly spewed “hateful” anti-Israel and Holocaust rhetoric. MassCUE’s fall education tech conference — held in partnership with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents at Gillette Stadium — apparently went off the rails during a panel on equity in education. That’s when the discussion reportedly delved into the current Middle East conflict in Israel and Gaza. “Speakers leaned very heavily into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a very one-sided, dangerous rhetoric,” Uxbridge High School Principal Michael Rubin told the Herald. That included references to “Israeli genocide” and “Israeli apartheid.” A panelist also suggested that the teaching of the Holocaust has been one-sided, and “two perspectives needed to be taught,” recalled Rubin, whose grandparents survived the Holocaust, during which the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. “It was jarring, unexpected, and unprofessional,” added Rubin, who’s also the president of his synagogue. Following complaints from several shocked conference attendees, the Anti-Defamation League’s New England chapter recently wrote a letter to MassCUE, as the ADL pushes for a public apology. “It is difficult to understand why an organization dedicated to education and technology would allow a panel discussion ostensibly focused on school equity to instead veer into a complex and controversial foreign conflict,” ADL New England’s deputy director Sara Colb wrote to MassCUE’s leaders. “It is all the more concerning that once the conversation veered in that direction it was not stopped or redirected to the advertised topic,” Colb added. “Allowing a presentation purporting to be about equity and inclusion in the classroom to include a one-sided narrative of a foreign conflict, replete with hateful, biased rhetoric, does a disservice to attendees by leaving them with a biased and misinformed account of the conflict.” MassCUE (Massachusetts Computer Using Educators) is the Bay State affiliate of the International Society for Technology in Education. More than two months after the fall conference, the organization has not addressed the Israeli-Palestinian discussion. “At MassCUE we take feedback very seriously and work hard to ensure we take any and all necessary steps to address concerns that are brought to our attention,” said MassCUE Board President Casey Daigle. “This process takes time. Please know we are working through our procedures internally.” The silence from MassCUE’s leaders has been “really concerning,” Rubin emphasized. “How comments like these about the Holocaust don’t warrant an immediate response is really, really, really confusing to me,” added Rubin, who was given the 2024 MassCUE Administrator Award two days before this panel. “If a student was targeted by a racial slur in our buildings, we would be involving local authorities, contacting families, sending a letter to the community, but MassCUE is working through their internal procedures. It doesn’t add up,” he said. The executive director of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents said M.A.S.S. was “troubled to hear that any of the speakers at the conference may have made statements that are inconsistent with the anti-racist values of our organization.” “We are working with MassCUE to learn more about the content in question,” added Executive Director Mary Bourque. Other than ADL’s push for a public apology from MassCUE, the ADL is calling for the organization to: “At a time when incidents of antisemitic hate, including in our K-12 schools, are at record highs, it is deeply wrong and dangerous to provide a platform for such hateful rhetoric or to allow a platform to be hijacked for such purposes,” the ADL deputy director wrote. “It is surprising to have to make this point to educators who purport to be concerned with equitable and inclusive classrooms for all students.”
