Atletico Madrid conceded three goals in a Spanish league game for the first time this season but still managed to beat Sevilla 4-3, with Antoine Griezmann's double helping make it nine wins in a row for Diego Simeone's in-form side. Third-placed Madrid restored their three-point lead over fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao, who beat Villarreal earlier on Sunday (Monday AEDT). Rodrigo De Paul gave Atletico the perfect start when he lashed home a stunning opener in the 10th minute. However, goals from Dodi Lukebakio, Isaac Romero and Juanlu Sanchez put Sevilla 3-1 up early in the second half and Atletico, without the vocal support of some home fans in a dispute over tickets, seemed lost in an unusually quiet Metropolitano Stadium. Simeone's side, though, is known for its resilience and it was not long before the fightback began. Griezmann reduced the deficit in the 62nd minute, and 17 minutes later, after Simeone made five substitutions in a quarter of an hour, Samuel Lino got the equaliser with a low shot from 30 yards. Griezmann got the winner in stoppage time to consolidate Atletico's third place. The Madrid club now has 35 points, one behind city rivals Real and three behind league leaders Barcelona. "We struggled to get into the game," Griezmann said. "We missed the support of the fans behind the goal, but in the end we managed to come back." Athletic Bilbao consolidated fourth place with a comfortable 2-0 win over Villarreal, the team immediately below them in the table and one of their closest rivals for a Champions League spot. Aitor Paredes put Athletic ahead when he glanced home a corner kick in 14 minutes, and Inaki Williams made it 2-0 midway through the second half. It was the fourth consecutive league win for Athletic, but the victory was marred by a silent protest from an organised fan group. The group refused to sing or chant in response to a rift between it and the club president, who reported threats to police last week. Several Athletic players expressed solidarity with the president, and the team did not salute the fans behind the goal after the match. "It's a very sad win and a time for everyone to pull together," club captain Oscar De Marcos said in comments reported by newspaper Marca. "The silence was notable during the game but we need to keep doing our job." Earlier on Sunday, Real Sociedad won for the fourth time in a row, beating Leganes 3-0 at the Butarque stadium near Madrid. Three days after his extra-time goal gave Sociedad a 1-0 win at fourth-tier Conquense in the Copa del Rey, Brais Mendez scored again to give the visitors an early lead. Substitute Ander Barrenetxea's first goal of the league season doubled their lead 10 minutes from time, then Mikel Oyarzabal added a third in stoppage time. It was only the fourth time in 16 matches that Sociedad have scored twice in a league game, and the win lifted them into sixth, above Osasuna, who drew 2-2 with Alaves. It only took 37 seconds for Kike Garcia to put Alaves ahead with a diving header. However, Ante Budimir and Ruben Garcia scored early in the second half to put Osasuna in front, before Kike Garcia got his second to tie the scores at 2-2. The point was the first for new Alaves coach Eduardo Coudet, but leaves the side in 15th place without a win in five games.Stay tuned for more updates and breaking news from the world of entertainment in the next edition of the Times Herald.Autonomous Underwater Gliders Market Growth: From US$ 1.7 Billion in 2023 to US$ 4.7 Billion by 2034 | TMR

Futuristic Form Meets Function: Mechtron Leads the Pack in Men’s Lifestyle Innovation

In congruence with Monday’s news that defenseman Artem Zub will miss time with a fractured foot, it’s no surprise that the Ottawa Senators are looking to trade for a defenseman. TSN’s Bruce Garrioch reports that general manager Steve Staios is aggressively pursuing the trade market for more defensive depth. Garrioch didn’t mention in his report what handedness the Senators are hoping for but it’ll likely be a right-handed shot. Ottawa already has a solid 1-2 punch on the left side of the defensive core, as shown by Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot . It stands to reason the Senators may have already been looking for an upgrade on the right side with Zub and Nick Jensen being the only serviceable top-four options on the right side. Ottawa has had difficulty keeping the puck out of their net this season but the entire blame can’t be put on the defense. They’ve only allowed 539 shots against in 20 games this season which is good for sixth in the league but 24th in goals against per game with a 3.25 mark. Former Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Linus Ullmark has only managed a .881 save percentage over 12 starts which is a far cry away from his .918 SV% career average before the move to Canada. Still, the team could certainly use an upgrade on defense if they hope to compete for a spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs in a sturdy Atlantic Division. The Senators own an 8-11-1 record on the year and have 62 games left to build momentum. Ottawa may have a trade partner in the Columbus Blue Jackets whom Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reported Sunday were listening to offers on right-handed shot defenseman, David Jiříček . The Blue Jackets are reasonably looking for another recent first-round pick on their entry-level contract making the Senators a compatible trade partner. Ottawa may be unwilling to part with a first-round pick for Jiříček but could build a package around forward Ridly Greig . He’s in the last year of his entry-level contract and was drafted two years before Jiříček with the 28th overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft. He scored a career-high in points last year with 13 goals and 26 points in 72 games and could provide more for Columbus if he’s bumped into the top six. Other options for Ottawa include Cody Ceci from the San Jose Sharks, Jacob Trouba from the New York Rangers or David Savard from the Montreal Canadiens outside of Jiříček. It appears the Senators will land a right-handed shot defenseman sooner rather than later with how aggressive Staios has been in the market since the beginning of the season. Conway, who scored just 21 runs over four innings as the Black Caps suffered heavy losses in the first two tests, will be replaced in the squad by uncapped all-rounder Mark Chapman. "Family comes first in this environment and we're all really excited for Dev and his wife Kim to welcome their first child," said coach Gary Stead. "Mark was with the test squad in India recently and returned to the Plunket Shield by scoring an impressive 276 - so it's a good time for him to be joining us." The absence of Conway might also give the ultra-loyal Stead the opportunity to bring Will Young into the batting line-up for the final test of the series, which starts at Seddon Park on Saturday. Young scored 244 runs and was named Player of the Series when New Zealand stunned the cricketing world by sweeping India 3-0 in late October and early November but was dropped for Kane Williamson for the England series. Conway's wife Kim went public on social media after suffering a miscarriage at the start of the year, saying she did not want to feel ashamed or embarrassed about it. "We will have our miracle one day and we will love them with everything," she wrote in a post on Instagram.Mumbai: After losing four of the six seats in north Maharashtra to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance proved that it was just a blip in a region that has been its bastion since 2014. In the assembly elections, the Mahayuti bagged XX of the 47 seats spread across five districts–Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Jalgaon, Dhule and Nandurbar. The result was especially devastating for the Congress, which lost many strongholds, such as Sangamner and Akkalkuwa. The grand old party’s sitting MLAs in these two constituencies, Balasaheb Thorat and KC Padavi, had been in power since 1985 and 1990, respectively. In another important battle, state cabinet minister and senior OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal of the Nationalist Congress Party managed to retain the Yevla constituency despite appeals from Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil and NCP founder Sharad Pawar to defeat him. To be sure, Bhujbal’s winning margin was more than halved from the 2019 assembly polls to 26,400. In the 2019 polls, the BJP and the undivided Shiv Sena had won 22 of the 47 seats in north Maharashtra, while the Congress and NCP bagged 20. As campaigning for the 2024 polls began, the MVA focused on issues such as the unrest among tribal communities over reservation, unemployment, anti-incumbency, and the low prices for crops like soybean, cotton and maize. The opposition alliance was expected to put up a good fight, especially given the Lok Sabha results. It wasn’t to be. In Nandurbar district, the BJP maintained its tally of two, while chief minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena snatched the Akkalkuwa seat from the Congress. In Dhule, the Mahayuti won all five seats, including a significant victory in the Dhule Rural constituency, where the BJP dealt a major blow to the Patil dynasty scion, Kunal Patil, of the Congress. In Jalgaon district, the Mahayuti swept all 11 seats. In Nashik, too, the ruling alliance did not allow any MVA candidate to win, with Ajit Pawar’s NCP bagging seven out of the 14 seats won by the Mahayuti. To counter the MVA’s challenge, the ruling Mahayuti resorted to hardline Hindutva and the mobilisation of its traditional vote bank, the OBCs, apart from banking on the success of the Ladki Bahin welfare scheme. It was no coincidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off his Maharashtra election campaign from Dhule and Nashik earlier this month, in which he first raised the “Ek hain toh safe hain” (We’re safe if we’re united) slogan. During the last week of campaigning, social media was flooded with messages underlining the need for Hindus to be united. Whatever the Mahayuti did, it clearly worked.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu caught a break Monday when the absence of a Republican lawmaker who blocked her plan to hike commercial tax rates on two occasions last week allowed the bill to pass the House and advance to the Senate. The bill cleared the House quickly, representing a stark contrast to the drama seen last Thursday and Friday, when, doubting the presence of a quorum, state Rep. David DeCoste used a procedural tactic to end legislative business on both days, while citing concerns with how the plan would impact the economy. State Rep. Rob Consalvo, noting that he’s been hearing from constituents who are “waiting anxiously” for the bill to become law, said he spoke with DeCoste after his second objection last Friday , describing it as a “very cordial conversation.” “I was grateful that he took my call and now I’m just thrilled that we’re able to move forward,” Consalvo, who sponsored the House bill, told the Herald. “This is a good example of a good compromise. The committee had reservations and their reservations were reflected in the compromise. The business community had reservations. “I think the mayor made it a much better bill by the changes she made,” he added, “and I’m grateful that we were all able to work together to get it done.” DeCoste told the Herald, however, that had he been present, he would have deployed the same procedural tactic to block the bill again. He said he had a death in the family and was attending services. The bill, designed to fend off a 28% quarterly property tax spike for homeowners in January by allowing the city to shift more of its tax burden onto businesses, now moves onto the Senate. “It is the Senate president’s intention to bring this legislation to the floor on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, giving Senate members and the Wu administration a week to continue conversations,” a spokesperson for Senate President Karen Spilka said in a statement. Mayor Wu expressed gratitude to the House for advancing the legislation, while looking to further action in the Senate, where a prior version of her tax plan stalled. “We look forward to continuing our work and conversations with the Senate to advance this consensus measure as soon as possible to protect Boston residents from a potential devastating tax spike,” Wu said in a statement. Wu has stated that the Legislature needs to act by the end of this month to allow the city to set tax rates and send bills out in December. The mayor’s plan is responsive to changing post-pandemic work patterns that have resulted in falling commercial property values and vacant office space that has shifted more of the city’s tax burden onto the residential sector and put a strain on a city budget that derives more than 70% of its revenue from property taxes. Wu’s office has provided data that show homeowners would be hit with a 28% quarterly tax spike and 14% annual increase without the legislation, which would lower those respective tax hikes to roughly 18% and 9%. The plan, despite featuring a compromise from four business leaders and fiscal watchdogs who had long objected to a tax shift they felt would be harmful to the economy, still continues to draw concerns. Critics have pointed to the mayor’s rejection of calls to cut a $4.6 billion city budget that grew by 8% this fiscal year, while also arguing that the plan would cause further harm to an already struggling commercial sector. All eyes now turn to the Senate, a chamber that’s been more skeptical of the plan. Republican Sen. Ryan Fattman did not explicitly say Monday whether Republicans in that branch also planned to further delay the bill. “We’ll see,” Fattman told reporters. “I’ve heard a lot of concerns. A lot of people have reached out. Actually, surprisingly, some of my constituents who have business interests in Boston. You know, Boston’s a little unique in that it’s not your typical home rule petition. It affects a lot of people.” Fattman added that he would be doing research over the next few days, citing plans to “eat some turkey and stew on it.” Those concerns were evident soon after the bill cleared the House. The Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance and Small Property Owners Association quickly released statements slamming the legislative action. A petition had also been circulating beforehand with signatures from business representatives calling for the Legislature to reject the bill. “This vote represents a betrayal of taxpayers, businesses, and anyone who values a vibrant and competitive economy in Boston,” Mass Fiscal spokesman Paul Craney said in a statement. “Instead of standing up for the hard-working entrepreneurs and small business owners who are the backbone of our capital city, House leadership allowed this reckless bill to sail through. “This is not leadership; it’s complicity in a tax-and-spend agenda that threatens our economy,” Craney added. “House Minority Leader Brad Jones was at this morning’s session and had the power to stop this tax hike bill but declined to act. His decision not to take a stand for a fiscally responsible solution that would include spending cuts instead of putting taxpayers on the hook for a spending problem is tantamount to an endorsement of the policy.” Jones’ office said he was only briefly in the House chamber Monday morning, not present when the Boston bill was taken up, and therefore not in a position to comment on it. Amir Shahsavari, vice president of the Small Property Owners Association, said SPOA was “sorry to see the House pass this bill and hope the Senate will resist it, as it harms small businesses and commercial owners” from the Hub and surrounding cities. “It’s like throwing ice water on the city’s economy,” Shahsavari said in a statement. “We do not support Mayor Wu’s bill as any tax should not be considered without budget cuts.”
