DETROIT LAKES — James Lawrence TeJohn, 39, of rural Cass Lake, Minnesota, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony third-degree burglary, felony theft and misdemeanor fourth-degree damage to property. According to court records, on Aug. 18, 2024, TeJohn allegedly drove a blue golf cart through a man’s yard on Long Lake Drive and then down his driveway and then through a wire fence. A short time later, police found the blue golf cart parked on Long Lake Road near Highway 6. ADVERTISEMENT Police then spoke to the owner of the golf cart, who told them that she had been home watching TV with the garage door open and the golf cart inside. The value of the golf cart was approximately $4,500. Police later found TeJohn walking along Highway 59 near County Highway 22. He fit the description of the man driving the golf cart, based on trail camera footage. In a second case against him, TeJohn was charged with felony third-degree burglary, felony theft, felony second-degree burglary, misdemeanor DWI and misdemeanor theft. According to court records, on Aug. 18, 2024, Tejohn is accused of entering a woman’s home on Munson Lane in Lakeview Township, saying that he was there to check on her. She had no idea who he was. TeJohn then went into her garage and went through her car. He brought a bike down from the attic and left, being last seen walking north on Munson Lane. The woman noted that there was a bottle of alcohol in her garage that was not hers. An officer saw a bottle of Copper Still jalapeno-flavored vodka on a step going into the attic area. TeJohn was found walking north on Highway 59 from the Highway 22 roundabout. An officer noticed an ATV in the east ditch of Highway 59, approximately 40 yards from TeJohn. And how will social sites verify people's ages, anyway? Can't kids just get around such technicalities, as they so often do? Does the ban limit kids' free expression and — especially for those in vulnerable groups — isolate them and curtail their opportunity to connect with members of their community? And how will social sites verify people's ages, anyway? Can't kids just get around such technicalities, as they so often do? This is, after all, the 21st century — an era when social media is the primary communications tool for most of those born in the past 25 years who, in a fragmented world, seek the common cultures of trends, music and memes. What happens when big swaths of that fall away? Is Australia's initiative a good, long-time-coming development that will protect the vulnerable, or could it become a well-meaning experiment with unintended consequences? The law will make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent children younger than 16 from holding accounts. “It’s clear that social media companies have to be held accountable, which is what Australia is trying to do,” said Jim Steyer, president and CEO of the nonprofit Common Sense Media. Leaders and parents in countries around the world are watching Australia’s policy closely as many seek to protect young kids from the internet's dangerous corners — and, not incidentally, from each other. Most nations have taken different routes, from parental consent requirements to minimum age limits. Many child safety experts, parents and even teens who have waited to get on social media consider Australia's move a positive step. They say there’s ample reason to ensure that children wait. “What’s most important for kids, just like adults, is real human connection. Less time alone on the screen means more time to connect, not less," said Julie Scelfo, the founder of Mothers Against Media Addiction, or MAMA, a grassroots group of parents aimed at combatting the harms of social media to children. “I’m confident we can support our kids in interacting in any number of ways aside from sharing the latest meme.” The harms to children from social media have been well documented in the two decades since Facebook’s launch ushered in a new era in how the world communicates. Kids who spend more time on social media, especially as tweens or young teenagers, are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, according to multiple studies — though it is not yet clear if there is a causal relationship. What's more, many are exposed to content that is not appropriate for their age, including pornography and violence, as well as social pressures about body image and makeup . They also face bullying, sexual harassment and unwanted advances from their peers as well as adult strangers. Because their brains are not fully developed, teenagers, especially younger ones the law is focused on, are also more affected by social comparisons than adults, so even happy posts from friends can send them into a negative spiral. Many major initiatives, particularly those aimed at social engineering, can produce side effects — often unintended. Could that happen here? What, if anything, do kids stand to lose by separating kids and the networks in which they participate? Paul Taske, associate director of litigation at the tech lobbying group NetChoice, says he considers the ban “one of the most extreme violations of free speech on the world stage today" even as he expressed relief that the First Amendment prevents such law in the United States "These restrictions would create a massive cultural shift,” Taske said. “Not only is the Australian government preventing young people from engaging with issues they’re passionate about, but they’re also doing so even if their parents are ok with them using digital services," he said. "Parents know their children and their needs the best, and they should be making these decisions for their families — not big government. That kind of forcible control over families inevitably will have downstream cultural impacts.” David Inserra, a fellow for Free Expression and Technology, Cato Institute, called the bill “about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike” in a recent blog post . While Australia's law doesn't require “hard verification” such as an uploaded ID, he said, it calls for effective “age assurance.” He said no verification system can ensure accuracy while also protecting privacy and not impacting adults in the process. Privacy advocates have also raised concerns about the law's effect on online anonymity, a cornerstone of online communications — and something that can protect teens on social platforms. “Whether it be religious minorities and dissidents, LGBTQ youth, those in abusive situations, whistleblowers, or countless other speakers in tricky situations, anonymous speech is a critical tool to safely challenge authority and express controversial opinions,” Inserra said. A spot check of kids at one mall in the Australian city of Brisbane on Wednesday didn't turn up a great deal of worry, though. “Social media is still important because you get to talk to people, but I think it’s still good that they’re like limiting it,” said Swan Son, a 13-year-old student at Brisbane State High School. She said she has had limited exposure to social media and wouldn’t really miss it for a couple of years. Her parents already enforce a daily one-hour limit. Parents in Britain and across Europe earlier this year organized on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram to promise not to buy smartphones for children younger than 12 or 13. This approach costs almost no money and requires no government enforcement. In the United States, some parents are keeping kids off social media either informally or as part of an organized campaign such as Wait Until 8th, a group that helps parents delay kids' access to social media and phones. This fall, Norway announced plans to ban kids under 15 from using social media, while France is testing a smartphone ban for kids under 15 in a limited number of schools — a policy that could be rolled out nationwide if successful. Still, the last federal law aimed at protecting children online was enacted in 1998, six years before Facebook’s founding. In July, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation designed to protect children from dangerous online content , pushing forward with what would be the first major effort by Congress in decades to hold tech companies more accountable. But the Kids Online Safety Act has since stalled in the House. While several states have passed laws requiring age verification, those are stuck in court. Utah became the first state to pass laws regulating children’s social media use in 2023. In September, a judge issued the preliminary injunction against the law, which would have required social media companies to verify the ages of users, apply privacy settings and limit some features. NetChoice has also obtained injunctions temporarily halting similar laws in several other states. And last May, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said there is insufficient evidence to show social media is safe for kids. With limited budgets and accountability pressures, time and resources for arts education continue to get squeezed out to make more space for the “basics,” subjects such as math, literacy and science, that predominately show up on standardized tests. But the arts are the basics. And what if parents demanded that they be treated as such? The arts are basic to human needs for expression, connection and understanding. They are so basic, in fact, that policymakers, school leadership, teachers and parents prioritized the arts in response to the mental health crisis during the pandemic. States used federal emergency funds to boost arts education programming. This funding is drying up, despite benefits to social-emotional and academic learning. The implication is that we can again deprioritize mental health and basic human development needs and get back to the learning that fits neatly into the framework of standardized tests. As a professor of international education, I focus on the benefits of arts education globally, not solely for mental health but also how the arts might contribute to more peaceful societies. When I was in Afghanistan in 2015 researching an arts education program run by Bond Street Theatre, I saw firsthand that arts activities could create moments of connection, joy and play among teenagers who were deeply divided across ethnic, religious and tribal lines, even in one of the most challenging settings in the world. The arts connect us to our own humanity and to the humanity of others, providing opportunities to complicate notions of “us” versus “them.” They build skills and behaviors that can equip our kids to challenge the status quo, draw attention to injustice, and imagine a better future in the face of increasing global conflicts, crises and polarization. In times of crisis, conflict or instability, human beings turn to the arts to process experiences that language and logic fail to capture. The arts are a first-line approach to providing protective learning environments for children who have experienced traumatic events and adversity. The World Health Organization recommends using the arts to improve health and well-being, pointing to evidence that artistic media support communication across divides. Research shows that children who receive quality early learning opportunities, which tend to draw heavily on arts activities, do better in the long run. We know that kids who participate in arts education in high school are more engaged in school and more likely to earn a four-year college degree. A recent impact evaluation focusing on kids in elementary and middle school showed that arts education improved writing achievement, reduced disciplinary infractions, and increased empathy and compassion. Understandably, parents want their children to have access to well-paying, stable jobs and push their kids to focus on subjects that they will be tested on for advancement. Literacy, numeracy, and STEM subjects — science, technology, engineering and math — provide vital skills, yet they are not the only skills that matter. Arts education is uniquely adept at building skills that are relevant and needed in response to artificial intelligence, increasing automation and a rapidly changing future. Indeed, the Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, arguably the most influential international set of standardized assessments, recently put a spotlight on the importance of teaching and assessing creativity. Now more than ever, employers are seeking out-of-the box creative and critical thinkers. If arts education is good for children’s mental health, well-being, engagement at school, empathy and innovation, why is it perpetually on the chopping block? Public education is constantly struggling for adequate funding, and with a mentality of the arts as a “nice-to-have” among politicians and decision-makers, it is easy to see how arts education gets pushed to the fringes. But parents have a say in the education their children receive. They can put pressure on decision-makers to prioritize arts education through their votes, reaching out to members of Congress and local representatives, getting involved with local school boards and sitting on district committees. Parents can advocate within PTAs for schools to partner with arts organizations that provide unique learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. They can advocate for school plays, dance recitals or art walks, events that generate social connections and celebration, even in divided communities. They can organize art supply donations and distribute them to schools. Parents can also encourage their kids to stay engaged in the arts. As a parent, I want my child to have those experiences that are unique to the arts classroom — to explore ideas outside the box, to put herself in someone else’s shoes, to share her voice in ways that aren’t confined by language or logic. If parents demand that the arts be treated as “basic” to what public education should provide, we can shift the narrative. Aurora’s special census will be in March 2025, although the process actually will start a week earlier in February. City officials got those dates recently from the U.S. Census Bureau in response to the city entering into an agreement with the bureau last summer for the special census. Aldermen heard about the dates at last Tuesday’s City Council Committee of the Whole meeting. “We’re happy to see this move forward,” said Ald. Michael Saville, 6th Ward, acting as mayor pro-tem for the meeting. The city is paying the Census Bureau about $1 million to try to get a count closer to what city officials think is reality than the 180,000 population figure from the 2020 decennial census. Officials have said getting closer to what they consider the real count, as much as 197,000 and possibly 200,000, would stem the tide of lost tax revenue the city has experienced since 2020. Officials have said the new count would need to find only a little more than 1,000 more residents to pay for the special census. They have said it is worth it because the city is losing revenue – they have estimated it could be as much as $17 million by the time the special census is done – due to the perceived undercount. The lost revenue comes because the city gets things like income tax distribution, local use taxes, motor fuel tax funds, transportation license renewal money and marijuana dispensary money based on population. The city loses about $4.3 million a year due to the perceived undercount, which would mean $43 million for the full 10 years between 2020 and 2030, officials have said. The special census would take place in all or part of eight of the city’s 10 wards. It would encompass parts of 35 census tracts in the city, seven of them entire tracts. The count will focus on areas on the East Side where officials believe the Census Bureau missed people, or missed new construction. The results of the 2020 decennial census showed Aurora with a population of about 180,000 people, down from 197,000 in 2010. From the moment the numbers were announced, Aurora officials said there was no way the city lost 17,000 residents, or about one ward’s worth of people. Officials have said the fact the census was conducted in the midst of the pandemic shutdown, the fact a new federal administration was coming in at the time, and that it turned out the Census Bureau was using untested new technology all contributed to the low count. The decennial census was a combination of local effort and work by the federal government. A concerted local effort to get people to reply online garnered a higher initial count than in 2010. It was after that, when the Census Bureau took over the actual door-to-door count of people who did not respond, that things went sideways, city officials said. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by an opposition war monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including two provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. As they have advanced, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands rushed the Syria border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those that remained open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some shops were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reach the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. Assad's status Amid the developments, Syria’s state media denied rumors flooding social media that Assad has left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. Assad's chief international backer, Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine, and Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up his forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran, meanwhile, has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. Pedersen said a date for the talks in Geneva on the implementation of U.N. Resolution 2254 would be announced later. The resolution, adopted in 2015, called for a Syrian-led political process, starting with the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were also marching from eastern Syria toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. The company forecasts shoppers will purchase $18.5 billion worth of goods using the third-party services for the period Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, with $993 million worth of purchases on Cyber Monday alone. Buy now, pay later can be particularly appealing to consumers who have low credit scores or no credit history, such as younger shoppers, because most of the companies providing the service run only soft credit checks and don’t report the loans and payment histories to the credit bureaus, unlike credit card companies. This holiday season, buy now, pay later users can also feel more confident if a transaction goes awry. In May, the CFPB said buy now, pay later company must adhere to other regulations that govern traditional credit, such as providing ways to demand refunds and dispute transactions. To use a buy now, pay later plan, consumers typically sign up with bank account information or a debit or credit card, and agree to pay for purchases in monthly installments, typically over eight weeks or more. The loans are marketed as requiring no or low interest, or only conditional fees, such as for late payment. Klarna, Afterpay and Affirm are three of the biggest buy now, pay later companies. But consumer advocates warn that shoppers who sign up for the payment plans using a credit card can be hit with more interest and fees. That's because individuals open themselves up to interest on the credit card payment, if it's carried month to month, on top of any late fees, interest, or penalties from the buy now, pay later loan itself. Experts advise against using a credit card to pay for these plans for this reason. Consumer watchdogs also say the plans lead consumers to overextend themselves because, for example, not paying full price up front leaves, in the shopper’s mind at least, more money for smaller purchases . They also caution consumers to keep careful track of using multiple buy now, pay later services, as the automatic payments can add up, and there is no central reporting, such as with a credit card statement. “Buy now, pay later can be an innovative tool for purchases you’re going to make anyway,” said Mark Elliott, chief customer officer at financial services company LendingClub. “The challenge is that it does fuel overspending.” For merchants, that’s part of the appeal. Retailers have found that customers are more likely to have bigger cart sizes or to convert from browsing to checking out when buy now, pay later is offered. One report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York cited research that found customers spend 20% more when buy now, pay later is available. “The reality is that the increased cost-of-living and inflation have put more people in a situation where they’re already relying on revolving credit,” Elliott said. “The psychographics of ‘buy now, pay later’ may be different — people don’t think of it as debt — but it is.” If a consumer misses a payment, they can face fees, interest, or the possibility of being locked out of using the services in the future. If so, then Senator Lidia Thorpe, the Green-turned-independent whose disruptions of parliament have become commonplace, could teach a masterclass in it. Under Thorpe’s model, the more performative the offence-taking, the better the protest. On Wednesday, the Victorian senator caused another parliamentary ruckus. It began when One Nation senator Pauline Hanson questioned the eligibility of Senator Fatima Payman to sit in parliament. Payman – who defected from Labor to the crossbench in July – was born in Kabul, but her family fled the Taliban, and she came to Australia as a child in 2003. Nonetheless, the legal advice is that Payman is eligible for parliament, having taken “all reasonable steps” to renounce her other citizenship. In the Senate, Payman said Hanson was “vindictive, mean, nasty” and that she “[brought] disgrace to the human race”. I am sympathetic to Payman’s anger . Hanson attempted to table documents relating to the matter, but Thorpe seized the papers and ripped them up. She appeared to throw them at the One Nation senator. Thorpe was subsequently ejected from the chamber, and as she departed, she raised her middle finger in an act of defiance you might call adolescent, except it’s insulting to adolescents. The teens I know would never do anything so rude. Afterwards, Thorpe barged into the Senate press gallery, upsetting the scholarly calm within, and used the elevated position to shout a pro-Palestine statement down at the senators she had just been separated from. Speaking afterwards, Thorpe said there is “one rule for white people who get away with racism, and there’s one rule for us when we call this out. Credit: AAP Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie said what many people were surely thinking when she responded to this: “Calling people racist actually is just a way, I think, that this senator is trying to excuse her own very, very bad behaviour”. The Second Wave feminists of the 1960s used to say that the personal is political, a slogan that was adopted, rightly, by other civil rights movements. Why? Because it’s true. But the slogan was never meant to be twisted to cover the use of political issues as vehicles for personal grievances. Racism is undoubtedly a problem in Australia – a truism so banal it is barely worth writing it, except that it is always worth reminding ourselves of how persistent and misery-making racism is. That’s particularly the case for people (like me) who have never personally experienced it. This week, after publishing a comprehensive national plan to eliminate racism , Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman said there had been “alarming rises in racism during recent times”, and that “interpersonal racism is one symptom of the disease of systemic racism”. I have no doubt that Thorpe has copped a lot of racism in her life, as, I’m sure, has Fatima Payman. In October, Thorpe interrupted a reception for King Charles and Queen Camilla in Parliament’s Great Hall with cries of “you are not my king!” and accusations of genocide. She was later censured. I quite admired her audacity – I have enough imagination to conceive that the head of the British monarchy, presiding over Australia like some sort of ... king, might be enraging to Aboriginal people. The tension between passion and pragmatism, between purity and practicality, has long been a fault line in progressive politics. When should an activist movement work with the status quo to change it, and when should it reject the status quo entirely? When to shout, and when to negotiate? The conflict is old, but its urgency is fresh. Following the pummelling of the Democrats in the US presidential election, much commentary has been spilled about the party’s mistakes. Many have blamed the censoriousness of the hard-left, and the righteous pleasure with which some of its members seem to take offence. It was interesting to read, this week, a story in The New York Times (and reprinted in Nine newspapers) about trans rights activists who are questioning the confrontational approach of the movement. The argument was that the rhetorical violence of some trans activists has alienated ordinary people. These are people who overwhelmingly believe in the substance of trans rights, but don’t like having their language policed, or their belief in biological sex dismissed as bigotry. Loading A change in tactics is badly needed because trans rights are in grave danger. President-elect Donald Trump, and members of his cabinet, have made their hostility to trans people known. MAGA Republicans, heady with their newly won power, have spent much of the past couple of weeks campaigning for a “congressional bathroom ban”, barring trans people in Congress from using the bathroom that aligns with their gender. It is a nasty crusade clearly targeted at Representative-elect Sarah McBride, a Democrat from Delaware who is the only openly trans person in Congress. Meanwhile, a video this week made public by failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris was full of milquetoast Oprah-isms that did not match the level of threat faced by the left. The Vice President urged supporters to “not let anybody ... take your power from you”. The video was a timely example of how progressive rhetoric collapses when it doesn’t have a firm basis in concrete policy. Such rhetoric doesn’t win hearts or minds. But neither does the performative umbrage-taking of some of the left’s more self-indulgent activists. There will always be a place for protest. But people will listen best to those who invite their respect. And I still can’t think of a better way to do that besides using the now-quaint tools of reason and forceful argument. Jubilation. Joy. Relief. Wonder. Pick your word for it — emotions, each and all of them felt by the masses, came pouring out as the clock struck zero inside Memorial Stadium. The Nebraska football program’s long eight-year bowl drought finally came to an end on a 50-degree November afternoon in downtown Lincoln. That achievement is worth celebrating on its own, but the way Nebraska got it done — dominating, rather than eking over the line against an opponent it knows well — made the accomplishment that much sweeter. Nebraska never trailed in a 44-25 win over Wisconsin on Saturday, securing the program’s first bowl game since the 2016 season. The victory also snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Badgers, and the four-game losing skid which NU entered the day with. For a Nebraska (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten) senior class which had never made the postseason before, their level of play on the field matched the seriousness of the opportunity in front of them. Particularly on the offensive side of the ball, improvements from last week’s loss to USC were evident. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, calling his second game as a member of the Nebraska coaching staff, dialed up a blistering six-play, 55-yard touchdown drive to start the game. A 45-yard kickoff return from freshman Jacory Barney Jr. set Nebraska up on the drive, with junior Heinrich Haarberg scoring the 5-yard run to secure NU’s early 7-0 lead. Having parted ways with its offensive coordinator during the week, Wisconsin, (5-6, 3-5) showed no ill effects from that shakeup as it immediately responded with a scoring drive of its own. Helped by a key missed tackle near midfield, Wisconsin found the end zone on a 4-yard passing score from Braedyn Locke to Bryson Green. After the initial scoring drive, Wisconsin took three of its next four possessions into Nebraska territory but came away with just three points from those chances. A Janiran Bonner fumble deep inside Nebraska territory set up Wisconsin with a prime scoring opportunity, but a three-and-out and delay of game penalty contributed to a 34-yard field goal sailing wide. The Badgers pushed across a 33-yard kick later in the half but also missed a second field goal from 41 yards out, a miss which resulted in a 10-play drive netting zero points. Not all of Nebraska’s first-half drives were perfect — the Huskers punted twice and fumbled once — but when things clicked, Wisconsin could do little to slow down the surging Nebraska offense. Nebraska utilized its quick passing game during its second touchdown drive, with a 27-yard gain from Emmett Johnson on a screen pass quickly being followed by a 21-yard Barney gain on a touch pass in the backfield. Running back Dante Dowdell capped off the eight-play, 80-yard touchdown drive with a 12-yard rushing score in which Jahmal Banks and Nate Boerkircher sealed the edge with a pair of punishing blocks. Nebraska also took advantage of Wisconsin’s field goal miscues by scoring touchdowns immediately following both misses. An efficient drive just prior to the halftime break ended with a toe-tap catch from Banks in the back of the end zone, a 5-yard passing score from Dylan Raiola which extended Nebraska’s lead to 21-10. Taking the ball with just 17 seconds left in the half, Wisconsin could’ve kneeled out the clock but instead opted to give running back Tawee Walker a first down carry. NU’s Nash Hutmacher made Wisconsin regret that decision by jarring the ball loose for a Bager turnover. One completion later and Nebraska brought kicker John Hohl onto the field for a 37-yard try, one he dispatched to give the Huskers a 14-point halftime lead. The 24 first-half points scored by Nebraska marked the team’s second-most all season, and the most since NU’s win over Colorado in September. The Huskers came out firing after the halftime break, too, forcing a Wisconsin three-and-out prior to putting together a scoring drive of its own. While the Nebraska drive stalled out prior to the end zone, a 45-yard Hohl field goal gave the Huskers a three-score advantage, 27-10 in their favor. Unable to trust its kicker in a similar situation, Wisconsin instead opted to keep its offense on the field for a fourth down outside the NU red zone. Walker’s carry up the middle was stuffed by the Blackshirts, resulting in a turnover on downs midway through the third quarter. When Nebraska turned that opportunity into a touchdown of its own, the game just about escaped Wisconsin’s reach. Another well-executed scoring drive, this time a seven-play march down the field which took three-plus minutes, ended in a Dowdell 3-yard touchdown run. As Nebraska’s lead reached 34-10, it marked the most points NU has scored against a Big Ten foe under head coach Matt Rhule. Wisconsin did fire back with a touchdown drive late in the third quarter and another midway through the fourth quarter. A third made field from Hohl helped keep Nebraska’s lead safe to the end, though. Nebraska can take away many positives from its win over Wisconsin, with the all-around performance of Johnson at running back and its much-improved offense taking center stage. Most important of all was the fact that Saturday’s win meant six on the season, a mark Nebraska fans hadn’t celebrated since the 2016 season. That major season milestone now secured, Nebraska’s regular season will come to a close during a Black Friday matchup against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

While preparing a meal, we would chat into the night on some common areas of interest, mainly civil rights and social justice, or the cultural preservation and identity of the minorities. The lack of anti-war or anti-discrimination efforts by the state became one of our primary areas of conversation. Latino social justice movements on intersectional feminism and identity politics gave us an insight into the wide impact of such research. Through these exchanges, I developed a profound interest in the intricate dynamics between dissent, democratic values, and the challenges posed by authoritarian narratives, a subject I went on to link to my research on dissident politics in the U.S. Our kitchen became a hub for cultural exchange and intellectual discussions, a cornerstone of postgraduate life. Beyond intellectual discussions, I discovered the culinary heritage and the rich flavours of Chicano cuisine. Over cerveza and lively conversations, my friend and I would collaboratively cook traditional dishes such as chiles rellenos (stuffed peppers) and enchiladas rojas (red sauce-covered tortillas with meat). On some days, I would roast drumsticks or whip up Madhur Jaffrey’s iconic Chettinad pepper chicken learned from her classic BBC cookbook published decades ago. The subtle, tantalising aromas wafting through the rooms would entice neighbours to drop by for a bite. Our culinary adventures transcended mere cooking, evolving into a gastro-intellectual experience. We savoured not only the flavours but also the stories and traditions behind each dish, weaving together food, culture, and camaraderie. It so happened that before I left Oxford, I left my crockery and some utensils neatly stored in a corner of the sideboard. Four years later, I returned to Oxford and revisited my college digs where I had spent a meaningful part of my academic life. Astonishingly, on peeping into the kitchen, I discovered my utensils exactly where I had left them. No one — not even the caretaker or cleaning staff — had disturbed them. This small gesture spoke volumes about the university’s culture of trust and respect. I remember our kitchen’s sole refrigerator was shared by two of us, yet we effortlessly managed our individual space without prior demarcation. Each of us claimed a shelf, storing sandwiches, eggs, bacon, fish, beer, and wine. Remarkably, not a single item went missing. This unwritten understanding reinforced the spirit of fellowship that defined our living arrangement. The refrigerator, a shared space, transcended its practical purpose to represent our collective values, a testament to our harmonious interaction, where trust and mutual respect reigned. Many, many years have gone by, and as I savour a meal of butter chicken which I often cooked back in Oxford, memories flooded in. I recalled the college library, where students could borrow books without supervision. The honour system encouraged community involvement, integrity and self-regulation, inculcating in students the practice of borrowing books without supervision, and thereby fostering a sense of responsibility and uprightness. We would simply sign out books with our names, titles, and ID numbers, and return them by dropping them into a designated box. Year-end stock checks rarely revealed more than two or three missing books. One particular instance absorbed me. Two texts on economics went missing, and suspicion subtly fell on an Asian couple researching economics within the college. Invited to dinner at their residence, I spotted the missing books on a lower shelf. We later jokingly remarked, “Only a South Asian could think of such a theft!” Having experienced similar incidents during my M.Phil. days, I was not surprised. Back then, some classmates would tear out chapters or steal entire books, leaving the library vandalised. We knew the culprit — the eldest in our batch, who ironically posed as a fatherly figure to us aspiring teachers. His actions went unchecked, but the memory lingered. Oxford’s library, however, stood in stark contrast. Its trust-based system and minimal losses demonstrated the power of shared accountability and academic integrity. The shared kitchens and resources at Oxford created a nurturing environment for postgraduate students and visiting fellows, encouraging a spirit of closeness and intellectual curiosity. NEW YORK — The man charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was not a client of the medical insurer and may have targeted it because of its size and influence, a senior police official said Thursday. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told NBC New York in an interview Thursday that investigators have uncovered evidence that Luigi Mangione had prior knowledge UnitedHealthcare was holding its annual investor conference in New York City. Mangione also mentioned the company in a note found in his possession when he was detained by police in Pennsylvania. Suspect Luigi Mangione is taken into the Blair County Courthouse on Tuesday in Hollidaysburg, Pa. "We have no indication that he was ever a client of United Healthcare, but he does make mention that it is the fifth largest corporation in America, which would make it the largest healthcare organization in America. So that's possibly why he targeted that company," Kenny said. UnitedHealthcare is in the top 20 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization but is not the fifth largest. It is the largest U.S. health insurer. Mangione remains jailed without bail in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested Monday after being spotted at a McDonald's in the city of Altoona, about 230 miles west of New York City. His lawyer there, Thomas Dickey, said Mangione intends to plead not guilty. Dickey also said he had yet to see evidence decisively linking his client to the crime. Mangione's arrest came five days after the caught-on-camera killing of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. Mangione faces multiple charges, including murder, firearm possession, and forgery, in New York and Pennsylvania. Mangione is an Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family. In posts on social media, Mangione wrote about experiencing severe chronic back pain before undergoing a spinal fusion surgery in 2023. Afterward, he posted that the operation was a success and that his pain improved and mobility returned. He urged others to consider the same type of surgery. On Wednesday, police said investigators are looking at his writings about his health problems and his criticism of corporate America and the U.S. health care system. Mohamed asked the stations to suspend BBC's programs “with immediate effect.” The BBC said it had no comment on the suspension. Popular BBC programs, including those in Hausa — the most-spoken language in Niger — are broadcast in the Central African country through local radio partners to reach a large audience across the region. The British broadcaster had reported on its website in Hausa on Wednesday that gunmen had killed more than 90 Nigerien soldiers and more than 40 civilians in two villages near the border with Burkina Faso. The French broadcaster Radio France International, also known as RFI, also reported on the attack, calling it a jihadi attack and citing the same death toll. Niger's authorities denied that an attack happened in the area in a statement read on state television and said it would file a complain against RFI for “incitement to genocide.” Niger, along with its neighbors Burkina Faso and Mali, has for over a decade battled an insurgency fought by jihadi groups, including some allied with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group. Following military coups in all three nations in recent years, the ruling juntas have expelled French forces and turned to Russia’s mercenary units for security assistance. But the security situation in the Sahel has worsened since the juntas took power, analysts say, with a record number of attacks and civilians killed both by Islamic militants and government forces. Meanwhile, the ruling juntas have cracked down on political dissent and journalists . Burkina Faso suspended the BBC and Voice of America radio stations for their coverage of a mass killing of civilians carried out by the country’s armed forces. MANILA, Philippines — Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte said Saturday she has contracted an assassin to kill the president, his wife and the House of Representatives speaker if she herself is killed, in a brazen public threat that she warned was not a joke. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin referred the “active threat” against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to an elite presidential guards force “for immediate proper action.” It was not immediately clear what actions would be taken against the vice president. The Presidential Security Command immediately boosted Marcos' security and said it considered the vice president's threat, which was “made so brazenly in public,” a national security issue. The security force said it was “coordinating with law enforcement agencies to detect, deter, and defend against any and all threats to the president and the first family.” Marcos ran with Duterte as his vice-presidential running mate in the May 2022 elections and both won with landslide victories on a campaign call of national unity. The two leaders and their camps, however, rapidly had a bitter falling-out over key differences, including in their approaches to China’s aggressive actions in the disputed South China Sea. Duterte resigned from the Marcos Cabinet in June as education secretary and head of an anti-insurgency body. Like her equally outspoken father, former President Rodrigo Duterte , the vice president became a vocal critic of Marcos, his wife Liza Araneta-Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, the president’s ally and cousin, accusing them of corruption, incompetence and politically persecuting the Duterte family and its close supporters. Her latest tirade was set off by the decision by House members allied with Romualdez and Marcos to detain her chief of staff, Zuleika Lopez, who was accused of hampering a congressional inquiry into the possible misuse of her budget as vice president and education secretary. Lopez was later transferred to a hospital after falling ill and wept when she heard of a plan to temporarily lock her up in a women’s prison. OTTAWA - After initially fighting the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, Meta has complied with an order from the regulator to publicly disclose information about its news-blocking measures. The CRTC asked Meta what measures it’s taking to comply with the Online News Act, and if news is being made available on its platforms — which would require the company to compensate media outlets for displaying their content. Meta blocked news from Facebook and Instagram in response to that legislation. But users have found workarounds to continue to share news on Meta’s platforms, and the Liberal government maintains the company could still fall under the legislation. After Meta refused to follow CRTC directions to either publicly release its Oct. 17 response, or explain in detail why it should remain confidential, the regulator gave Meta until Wednesday to make the document public. In that brief Oct. 17 letter, Meta says it blocks content from domains, pages, or accounts it has identified as news outlets, but the letter does not address workarounds such as users sharing screenshots of news articles and copying the text of articles in their posts. “The measures we undertake to identify potential news outlets include reviewing potential publishers based on Facebook and Instagram account activity, and industry information available through public, licensed and government sources,” the company said.
