A man who died after falling off the top of a car in Napier on Friday is being remembered as a loving father and beloved teammate. Police reported that the man was travelling on a mattress on the roof of a station wagon from the Marewa shops, when he fell onto the road at Nuffield Avenue. Family posting on social media have named the man as Reif Cotter, and a Givealittle page has been set up for his three young children and their mother. A post by the children's mother Holly Te Ngahue said he was "the most loving" Dad, brother, son and moko. "Your contagious smile, your willingness to give, your sily antics, the absolute life of any party. We all love you so much Reif," she wrote on Facebook. The Givealittle page , set up by family friends, said Cotters' death was "unexpected" and "tragic". People are asked to donate to "help Holly and her children adjust to a new life, to be able to enjoy and stay in their home and to do all the nice things like kids' sports and hobbies, now sadly without the support of Reif", the page reads. Cotter played for the Eskview and Districts Ruby Football Club, and has been remembered as a "beloved teammate". "A talented winger, Reif brought not only skill to the field but also a contagious cheeky smile that could light up any room," a post on the Clubs' Facebook page reads. Posts by Te Ngahue on Facebook say the family were expecting Cotters body to be released on Tuesday afternoon, and a service will proceed at the Eskview Rugby Clubrooms on Friday.JOHN MACLEOD: When it comes to modern art, I'm with Miss Jean Brodie: 'For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like' Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport By JOHN MACLEOD FOR THE SCOTTISH DAILY MAIL Published: 21:24 GMT, 4 December 2024 | Updated: 21:36 GMT, 4 December 2024 e-mail View comments Jasleen Kaur, a 38 year-old Glaswegian, is this year’s winner of the Turner Prize, Britain’s foremost – and absurdly hyped – prize for modern art. It’s difficult to do justice to Kaur’s creation, drawing on her Sikh heritage – and on account of which she has just trousered £25,000 - because it is not so much something you look at, or even an ‘installation,’ as a space you step into. Most press images centre on the red, Mk II Ford Escort draped in a vast doily, but there is far more to Alter Altar than that. ‘The display,’ pants one London paper, ‘features a series of installations exploring religious identities, politics and history, makes heavy use of different sounds, embedded into the exhibition by way of bells, Sufi Islamic music, Indian harmonium, and pop music.’ And the Escort and doily are ‘reference to her father’s first car in the UK and the Indian population who migrated to this country to work in textile factories.’ On Tuesday night, too, there was much posturing mention of Palestine . Not for the first time, one wonders why this sort of luvvie-land competition never seems to be won by anyone who might conceivably have voted for Margaret Thatcher . This is not the cue for a modern-art-trash-the-lot-of-it diatribe. There is good modern art and bad modern art. As a small boy on his first outing to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, I was instantly enchanted by Salvador Dali’s Christ of St John of the Cross. Much of its power rests in that the face of Jesus is not actually seen. And it is often forgotten that the Corporation’s purchase of the painting, in 1952 and for £8,200, was highly controversial. Jasleen Kaur won the Turner Prize with her doily-covered Ford Escort Critics slammed so traditional a painting by a notorious Surrealist as a ‘stunt,’ students at Glasgow School of Art got up a petition against its acquisition, there were assorted howls of ‘no Popery’ and in 1961 the painting was physically attacked by a stone-wielding nutter. Yet, in 2006, Christ of St John of the Cross topped a Glasgow newspaper poll as the most popular painting in Scotland. The late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was, unexpectedly, a keen collector of modern art – another Glasgow lass, Alison Watt, was but 24 when commissioned for a notable 1989 portrait of the grand old lady – and in 1952, newly widowed, unveiled what is still arguably Scotland’s best-loved sculpture, Scott Sutherland’s compelling Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge. It broke with the bland, hung-headed conventions of this monumental genre: these are robust and rugged men of striking modernity, eying the great Highland hills about them as their officer clutches his binoculars. The Turner Prize is best viewed with a wry cynicism. Too often it has been presented as a sort of Lifetime Achievement award – the late Lucian Freud was nominated twice – while the odd national treasure, like David Hockney, has been conspicuously overlooked. And, now and again, it has felt like one great public leg-pull. Contrary to generally held myth, Tracy Emin did not win the Turner Prize in 1999 for her faintly disgusting unmade bed – she was merely the runner-up that year – but Damien Hirst did lift it in 1995 for Mother and Child Divided – a very dead, bisected cow and calf in different vitrines. ‘It’s amazing what you can do with an E in A-level art, a twisted imagination and a chainsaw,’ crowed the cheeky-faced 30 year-old, best noted for assorted animal carcasses pickled in formaldehyde and pretentiously titled. The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living was bestowed on an unhappy-looking tiger shark; though even that is topped by the name of his ooh-look-at-me 1997 book, I want to Spend the Rest of my Life Everywhere, with Everyone, One-to-one, Always, Forever, Now. Glasgow artist Jasleen Kaur In fact, Hirst spent years of it with the vastly rich Charles Saatchi – until, in 2003, the pair fell out. ‘But after a while,’ as Hirst has mockingly put it, ‘you can get away with things.’ It is difficult not to wonder if, in recent years, art in its broadest sense in Britain has grown decadent. Not in the sense of dribbling depravity: just in the sense of being tired and naff. There has been some stunning modern architecture, like Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall (1990) but also some major fails, like the National Museum of Scotland (1998) or the grotesque and dehumanising Scottish Parliament (2004.) It took the French but half a decade to restore Notre Dame after the dreadful 2019 fire ; Glasgow School of Art – whose overlords managed to burn it down not just once, but twice – is still a burnt-out shell. Not that a single head has rolled over this cultural and civic disaster. And the likes of J K Rowling or Alexander McCall Smith have made a mint out of lightweight fiction which, once perused, you never want to open again. Indeed, as the literary careers of Dan Brown or Peter May attest, you can run all the way to the bank even when writing very badly indeed. By contrast, you can visit and revisit great fiction – Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited comes at once to mind; Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is another – time and again over the decades, and find something new at every reading. It is not all gloom or pretension. We still have figures of serious achievement. Scotland’s greatest living composer, many would argue, is Judith Weir, commissioned time and again for new Christmas works for the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge. We have a pretty impressive canon, from Norman McCaig through Iain Crichton Smith and Edwin Morgan, of post-war poetry; Jackie Kay is arguably our greatest living master of verse. Douglas Gordon – who lifted the Turner Prize in 1996 – is a highly respected Scottish artist whose work, centred on memory and repetition, always makes you think and, earlier this year in Stornoway, we enjoyed an exhibition or works by Ken Currie, whose Three Oncologists – on display at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery – is one of our most consequential modern paintings. Not that it is for me to mock Jasleen Kaur’s achievement. 'For those who like that sort of thing,' said Miss Brodie in her best Edinburgh voice, 'That is the sort of thing they like...'. Sustainability: This word has gained profound significance in the 21st century. Over the last 100 years, the world’s population has quadrupled, bringing challenges such as water shortages, climate change and deforestation. Moreover, we are consuming more food and natural resources and producing more carbon emissions than ever. We call the rainforests of South America the lungs of our planet and advocate for their preservation. Yet, wood is also an integral part of our daily lives. It is the raw material for our chairs and tables, covers our floors, frames our doors, keeps us warm and supports our beds. Even the paper we write on is made from wood. The examples are endless. We need wood – there’s no doubt about it. South America is a continent where we have yet to realize our full potential for collaboration. While the region's countries grappled with democracy and crime issues during the last century, many have built stable economies with sustainable growth in recent decades. With a population of 700 million and rising per capita income, these nations are becoming increasingly attractive consumer markets. The forestry industry is a cornerstone of South American economies, particularly Argentina and Paraguay. Argentina boasts over 1.5 million hectares of forest plantations, projected to rise to 3.5 million in the coming years. Similarly, Paraguay has identified 20 million hectares of land suitable for forestry, offering low taxes and financial incentives to encourage investment. Over the past 20 years, both countries have implemented deforestation laws to manage their natural resources sustainably. Their unique ecosystems make wood production more efficient than in many other parts of the world. The favorable climate and vast pampas of South America yield high-quality wood certified for international markets. In Argentina’s Corrientes and Misiones provinces, oak and pine trees that take 30-40 years to mature in Eastern Europe are harvest-ready in just nine-12 years. Similarly, industrial eucalyptus in Paraguay is 30%-35% more efficient than in Indonesia, a global leader in eucalyptus production. While South America’s forestry industry holds immense potential, it often lacks advanced production techniques, large-scale investments and cutting-edge technology. Countries like Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay possess a capable labor force but require more educated and experienced professionals to optimize their operations. Although the industry has a history, many local companies have not established the international connections necessary for global integration. In contrast, Türkiye has extensive expertise in the forestry sector. Thanks to our geopolitical advantages and robust trade relationships with the European Union and the Middle Eastern and Asian countries, Turkish forestry companies have forged long-lasting ties worldwide. Turkish wood and forestry firms have become international players, exporting products to over 100 countries and employing tens of thousands globally. These companies have made significant contributions from wooden flooring and doors to furniture and paper. However, Latin America remains an untapped region. With increasing global demand for sustainable wood and stringent deforestation regulations in Argentina and Paraguay, now is the time for Turkish companies to explore collaboration opportunities. Leveraging the ecosystems we’ve built in leading sectors like technology, machinery, logistics and construction, Türkiye now boasts two of the world’s top forestry companies. The governments of Argentina and Paraguay have enacted “Zero Deforestation Laws” to regulate land use and protect forests. These laws also present social opportunities, such as training indigenous communities in forestry management. Partnerships in this area can create jobs and stimulate local economies. With their global expertise, Turkish companies can contribute significantly to sustainable forestry, fostering a win-win scenario and boosting local employment while expanding Türkiye's international footprint in the industry. With a population of 700 million, Latin America is resource-rich and a vast consumer market. Decades of political stabilization and economic growth have made the continent attractive for investments and partnerships. Moreover, governments and industry leaders in Argentina and Paraguay are eager to collaborate and share their knowledge, land and resources. Turkish forestry companies are ideally positioned to expand their influence in this market. Working together can shape a future where sustainable forestry meets growing global demand. The benefits extend beyond resource extraction to include technological exchange, job creation and innovations in sustainability. Collaboration between Turkish and South American companies will bring mutual benefits regarding raw material quality, cost sharing, knowledge transfer, technology exchange and market expansion. It’s time to uncover the world’s hidden treasures and embrace future opportunities.US-China 'uncertainty' could be higher under Trump than Biden: ExpertAlbo's having a 'baby'! and Prince Harry is coming into his own: Psychic shares her 2025 predictions

This week is set to be a busy one in the world of spaceflight, with 10 orbital launches planned throughout the week. China is expected to continue its launch cadence from last week with three more launches this week. SpaceX plans to launch five Falcon 9 missions in five days with the launches of four Starlink missions and one customer payload. India’s PSLV-XL launch vehicle will loft a pair of European spacecraft into orbit to study the Sun, and the much-delayed European radar satellite Sentinel-1C is expected to finally launch atop a Vega C from French Guiana. Lastly, Russia is expected to launch a delayed military satellite aboard a Soyuz rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia. Outside of the launch manifest for the week, SpaceX’s CRS-31 Cargo Dragon is expected to depart from the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, Dec. 5, and return to Earth via a splashdown. Following splashdown, Cargo Dragon will be recovered and refurbished for use on future cargo resupply missions to the ISS. CASC CZ-3B | Unknown Payload Little is known about the first Chinese launch of the week. Launch is expected to occur on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 05:55 UTC from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China. The rocket set to be used for this mission is believed to be a Chang Zheng (Long March) 3B, which features three stages and stands 56.3 m tall. The payload for this mission is unknown. The rocket will follow a southeasterly trajectory following launch. A Soyuz 2.1b rocket launches Cosmos 2576 from Site 43/4 at Plesetsk in May 2024. (Credit: Russian Ministry of Defence) Soyuz 2.1b | Cosmos 2580 (Unknown Payload) A Soyuz 2.1b rocket was initially expected to launch the Cosmos 2580 mission, featuring another Lotos-S satellite, into orbit last week, but has since been rescheduled to Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 16:00 UTC. The Soyuz 2.1b is expected to launch from an unconfirmed pad at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia during a three-hour launch window, carrying the payload to an orbit inclined by 67 degrees. Additional launch opportunities extend through early December. The Lotos reconnaissance satellites form part of a wider, classified, orbital electronic intelligence system known as Liana. This Electronic Signals Intelligence, or ELINT, system intercepts radar and electromagnetic radiation signals for the location and characterization of sites, ships, and aircraft of military interest. Four were procured by the Russian Ministry of Defense back in 2017, one of which has yet to be launched and could, therefore, be this payload. A further batch was subsequently ordered in August 2022 and is assumed to still be in production. Previous Lotos launches have been accompanied by a secondary payload, which has been deployed shortly after the primary satellite is released. SpaceX Falcon 9 | Starlink Group 9-14 The first of at least three Starlink launches this week will liftoff on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 4:29 PM PST (Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 00:29 UTC). Starlink Group 9-14 will launch from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The booster for this flight has not yet been announced. Following launch and separation, the booster will land on SpaceX’s west coast droneship Of Course I Still Love You , which will be stationed approximately 600 km southeast of Vandenberg. Falcon 9’s first stage booster is powered by nine Merlin 1D engines, while the second utilizes a single vacuum-optimized Merlin engine. Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy are the first and only reusable orbital rockets in service today, with some Falcon boosters having flown over twenty flights. The two payload fairings are also recovered and reused. Starlink Group 9-14 will be the 120th Falcon 9 mission of 2024. CASC Kuaizhou 1A | Unknown Payload The second Chinese launch of the week is planned for Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 04:50 UTC. Any information currently known about this launch is known from published hazard warnings, and more detail may be made known as launch time approaches. The mission will launch from a Mobile Launcher Pad at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China. Flight characteristics found in warning notices point to the launch vehicle being a Kuaizhou 1A vehicle, a quick-reaction vehicle with three solid-fuelled stages. The vehicle is capable of lifting 400 kg into low-Earth orbit (LEO). SpaceX Falcon 9 | Starlink Group 6-70 On Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 3:29 AM EST (08:29 UTC), a SpaceX Falcon 9 will launch the Starlink Group 6-70 mission to LEO. This batch of 24 Starlink satellites will be launched from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Falcon 9 is set to follow a southeasterly trajectory out of Florida following launch. The booster for this mission is not yet known, but is expected to land ~600 km downrange on one of SpaceX’s two east coast droneships, A Shortfall of Gravitas. ✨ Just 3 days to go! The trusted PSLV is ready to shine with the PSLV-C59/PROBA-3, a mission by NSIL enabled by ISRO, in collaboration with ESA. 🚀 This mission will place ESA’s PROBA-3 satellites (~550kg) into a unique highly elliptical orbit, reinforcing PSLV’s reliability for... pic.twitter.com/qOYdtT10bo — ISRO (@isro) December 1, 2024 ISRO PSLV XL | PROBA 3 The first of two European Space Agency (ESA) payloads being launched this week is PROBA-3, which will launch atop India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 10:38 UTC from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in India. The two 340 kg PROBA 3 spacecraft will be deployed by PSLV in a highly elliptical high-Earth orbit of 600 km by 60530 km with an orbital period of 19.7 hours. After a short preparatory period, the two satellites will be separated and injected into a safe relative tandem orbit. The PROBA-3 mission uses two satellites to create artificial solar eclipses to study the Sun’s corona. The two spacecraft will maneuver precisely in Earth orbit so that, when flying in formation, one casts a shadow onto the other. This allows the other spacecraft to observe the Sun’s corona without being blinded by sunlight “It’s an experiment in space to demonstrate a new concept, a new technology,” said Damien Galano, the PROBA project manager at ESA. “It’s very challenging because we need to control very well the flight path of the two spacecraft.” In the XL configuration being used for this mission, India’s PSLV rocket stands 44 m tall. Six strap-on solid rocket motors assist the rocket’s four stages and power the vehicle into orbit. Arianespace Vega C | Sentinel-1C The second ESA mission of the week is the long-delayed Sentinel-1C mission. Launch is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 21:20 UTC from pad ELV-1 at the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana atop a Vega C booster. Copernicus Sentinel-1C is the third Sentinel-1 satellite, following Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B, which were launched in April 2014 and April 2016, respectively. The three satellites are identical, each carrying an advanced radar instrument to provide an all-weather, day-and-night supply of imagery of Earth’s surface. The mission has been used to monitor the movement of icebergs, ice sheets, glaciers, ground deformation from subsidence and earthquakes, floods after severe storms, and much more. Sentinel-1C has been ready to launch since early 2023. ESA intended to launch as soon as possible, particularly as the Sentinel-1B satellite had developed a terminal fault while in orbit in December 2021. However, Sentinel-1C’s launch was significantly delayed following the December 2022 failure of a Vega C vehicle during launch and an anomaly during a test fire of the redesigned nozzle that was intended to fix the original failure. Vega C is a four stage rocket standing 35 m in height. The first three stages are solid rocket motors, while the fourth stage, known as AVUM, uses a liquid-propelled motor. AVUM compensates for the performance scattering of the first three solid propulsion stages, circularizes the orbit, and executes the final deorbiting maneuvers of the stage following payload deployment. Launch is planned for Thursday, Dec. 5, at 1:10 AM EST (16:10 UTC), and Falcon 9 will deploy SXM-9 into a geostationary transfer orbit after flying a due east trajectory out of the Cape. Operated by SiriusXM, SXM-9 is the first in a series of almost identical third-generation satellites that will update the fleet. The satellite is the 10th high-powered, digital, audio radio satellite built by Maxar (SSL) for SiriusXM. Subsequent missions are planned to launch once per year up to SXM-12 in 2027. Built on Maxar’s 1300-class platform and massing around 7,000 kg, SXM-9 will support both Sirius and XM services’ broadcasting of sports, music, news, and entertainment content via satellite radio. The satellite includes a large mesh reflector, which measures almost 10 m in length when unfurled and has an expected 15-year lifespan. SpaceX Falcon 9 | Starlink Group 11-2 SpaceX plans to launch the Starlink Group 11-2 mission from SLC-4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1:24 PM PST (21:24 UTC). The currently unknown booster will attempt to land on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You around eight minutes after launch. SpaceX Falcon 9 | Starlink Group 12-5 The fifth and final Falcon 9 launch of the week will be the launch of the Starlink Group 12-5 mission from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 12:10 AM EST (05:10 UTC). The booster will attempt to land on one of two east coast droneships SpaceX utilizes for Falcon missions . CASC CZ-6A | Unknown Payload The final Chinese launch of the week will launch from pad LC-9A at Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in China. Launch was expected to occur on Monday, Dec. 2, at 05:53 UTC, but a scrub seems to have occurred and a new date is not yet known. Launch notices point to a Chang Zheng (Long March) 6A (CZ-6A) rocket being used for this mission. CZ-6A consists of two stages with four additional strap-on engines. A 4.2 m diameter, 5.7 m tall fairing is fitted atop the second stage, giving the vehicle a height of 50 m. The payload being launched on this mission is not known. No one wants to see any player take a vicious hit like the one that knocked Trevor Lawrence out of the game. It’s easy to agree on that point. Eliminating violent shots is the hard part. The NFL has instituted several rules to protect quarterbacks but football is a physical sport and players have to react instantly and make split-second decisions going at high speeds so injuries keep occurring. Lawrence was carted off the field in the first half of Jacksonville’s 23-20 loss to Houston on Sunday after Azeez Al-Shaair leveled the defenseless quarterback with a forearm to the facemask. The late hit put Lawrence in the fencing position — both fists clenched — and he stayed on the ground for several minutes, while a brawl ensued. Lawrence didn’t require hospitalization for his concussion but it’s unknown when he’ll return. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out/been praying for me,” Lawrence wrote on X. “I’m home and feeling better. Means a lot, thank you all.” Al-Shaair was ejected from the game and faces a fine and potential suspension after his latest unsportsmanlike penalty. The Texans' linebacker was flagged and later fined $11,255 for a late hit out of bounds on Titans running back Tony Pollard last week. He was fined earlier this year after he punched Bears running back Roschon Johnson on the sideline in Week 2. That occurred during a scuffle that started after his hard shot on quarterback Caleb Williams near the sideline that wasn’t flagged. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence slides in front of Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair during the first half of a game on Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla. Lawrence was injured on the play. Al-Shaair once got away with grabbing Tom Brady by the throat on a pass rush in a game between the 49ers and Buccaneers. Outraged Jaguars players called Al-Shaair’s hit “dirty” and Texans coach DeMeco Ryans made it known he didn’t condone it. “It’s not what we’re coaching,” Ryans said. “Want to be smart in everything we do and not hurt the team, get a penalty there. Have to be smarter when the quarterback is going down. Unfortunate play. Not representative of who Azeez is. He’s a smart player, really great leader for us. We felt his presence not being there. His loss really affected us on the defensive side. Just not what we’re coaching. Didn’t want to see the melee and all the aftermath. That’s not what we’re about. Not representative of us. I’ll talk to Azeez, address him personally, and we’ll move forward from it.” Fox Sports color analyst Daryl Johnston, a former fullback for the Dallas Cowboys, didn’t hold back his criticism, calling it a “cheap shot.” “It’s everything you’re not supposed to do,” Johnston said. “Everything. You’ll see this in slow motion and Azeez Al-Shaair does everything you’re trying to prevent in this situation. It’s reckless. It’s disrespectful. There’s an honor that you give to your opponent on the football field and you respect him. And there’s opportunities to be physical and give big hits and play this game in that manner. And there’s other times when there’s a respect that you grant to your opponent.” Some former NFL quarterbacks blasted Al-Shaair on social media. “There is no place in the game of football for dirty hits like this one,” Robert Griffin III wrote on X. Chase Daniel called it “one of the dirtiest hits” he’s ever seen on a quarterback. Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram, right, jumps on Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair after his late hit on quarterback Trevor Lawrence, bottom, during the first half of a game on Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla. Even defensive players struggled to defend Al-Shaair. “That was uncalled for,” Hall of Fame defensive lineman Michael Strahan said on Fox’s studio show while fellow Hall of Famer Howie Long agreed. But the play also sparked debate about the quarterback slide. Lawrence slid feet first, which signals that he’s giving himself up on the play. The NFL rulebook states: “A defender must pull up when a runner begins a feet-first slide.” But defensive players aren’t automatically penalized if they make contact with a sliding quarterback if they already committed and the contact is unavoidable. The rules state it’s a foul when “the defender makes forcible contact into the head or neck area of the runner with the helmet, shoulder, or forearm, or commits some other act that is unnecessary roughness.” Al-Shaair did that so he was penalized and will face other repercussions. Still, given the hard-hitting nature of the sport, it won’t be the last time this happens. When Caleb Williams took the field for the Chicago Bears' first regular season game against the Tennessee Titans, the anticipation for the rookie's debut game—possibly the most ever—was on full display. Despite a tough debut for the quarterback, the Bears secured a 24-17 win, a notable feat for the rookie. The victory made Williams the first #1 overall pick with a Week 1 win in over 20 years. Going forward this season, Williams is expected to eclipse C.J. Stroud's record-breaking 2023 rookie campaign with the Houston Texans. However, Stroud's success is an anomaly. Drafting a successful quarterback, especially one who is effective right away, is difficult. When teams have a high first-round draft pick, and they're coming off an unsuccessful few seasons, it's assumed that they will use their first pick on a quarterback . That player will assume the title of "the face of the franchise" and will get the central attention, win or lose. To see which quarterbacks have faced that challenge and triumphed, ATS.io compiled a ranking of the 10 best rookie quarterbacks since 1960 using data from StatHead . Rookies were defined as players who are in their first season of professional football and have not been on the roster of another professional team. Quarterbacks were ranked according to adjusted net yards per pass attempt, which quantifies efficient passing skill. Ties were broken using passer rating. Only rookie quarterbacks with at least 10 games played and 200 total passing attempts were considered. Since 1967, 130 quarterbacks have been drafted in the first round. Of those drafted, only 61 have won a playoff game as a starter, according to The Athletic, which used data from NFL Research . The biggest reason this success rate is not guaranteed is because there are differences between college and pro offensive systems. In the collegiate game, the ball is snapped at different points on the field, passing windows are wider, and defenders and linemen are not as quick, making the adjustment to the pro level more difficult. NFL scouts and general managers are gambling on what skills can be transferable and how long those adjustments might take, which is why some teams prefer redshirt quarterbacks to ease the transition. However, just because a team may not want to use their first-round pick on a quarterback, doesn't mean they can't find a diamond in the rough later in the draft. Think about Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, and Dak Prescott, all of which were not first-round picks, but have gone on to make a name for themselves in the NFL. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 6.44 - Passer rating: 91.2 - Season stats: 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns, 6 interceptions Coming out of college, Gardner Minshew was not a highly sought-after quarterback for NFL teams. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 draft—a draft that was headlined by Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, and Daniel Jones. Nonetheless, Minshew's rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars was filled with many accomplishments. He won Rookie of the Week seven times despite not winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Minshew also had the highest passer rating of any rookie quarterback that started in 2019. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 6.77 - Passer rating: 93.7 - Season stats: 3,725 yards, 27 touchdowns, 14 interceptions Pressure was high for Baker Mayfield as the first overall pick in the 2018 draft. When he joined the Cleveland Browns, there was an expectation that once the team figured out the quarterback position, it could be playoff-ready. After trading for Jarvis Landry, a young wide receiver from the Miami Dolphins, in the offseason, the Browns were on their way. Mayfield's rookie season was filled with many firsts, and the Landry-Mayfield connection filled the stat sheet. Mayfield set the record for most passing touchdowns by a rookie quarterback in 2019 with 27 surpassing prior marks from Payton Manning and Russell Wilson. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 6.84 - Passer rating: 98.3 - Season stats: 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns, 10 interceptions Justin Herbert was the third quarterback selected in the 2020 NFL draft behind Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. As the No. 6 overall pick, expectations were high, but there was also an assumption that it would be a few years before Herbert's development would take shape. Then, Chargers starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor was accidentally punctured in the lung by a team doctor administering a painkiller before the second game of the season, and it wasn't clear what Taylor's status would be moving forward. When Herbert was given the nod to start minutes before the game, fans didn't know what to expect. Herbert shocked viewers when he threw for over 300 yards and only one interception in that game. He continued his strong rookie showing throughout the season and went on to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 6.93 - Passer rating: 98.1 - Season stats: 2,621 yards, 17 touchdowns, 11 interceptions Ben Roethlisberger was the third quarterback selected in his draft class behind the likes of Eli Manning and Philip Rivers—though fans wouldn't have been able to tell. From the moment Roethlisberger was called up by the Pittsburgh Steelers to play in his first game—Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens—it was clear he had a special arm, gaining the nickname "Golden Arm." While the next several games were bumpy for Steelers fans, it was clear that Roethlisberger was the future of the franchise. The Steelers had a solid running game and its receiving core, led by Hines Ward, was one of the best in the league . Once Roethlisberger gained his footing a few games in, he was unstoppable. He led Pittsburgh to its best record ever: 15-1. He also started the season on an eight-game winning streak, becoming the first rookie to do so. Additionally, Roethlisberger became the first quarterback to win AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 7.01 - Passer rating: 87.7 - Season stats: 3,440 yards, 16 touchdowns, 11 interceptions As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, there were high expectations on Matt Ryan's shoulders heading to the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons were coming off back-to-back losing seasons and off-the-field legal troubles with its starting quarterback Michael Vick overshadowing the team's play. Ryan was expected to pick up the pieces. He did that immediately, leading the Falcons to an 11-5 record in his rookie season and becoming the clear favorite for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year halfway through the season, which he went on to win. The tag team of Ryan and running back Michael Turner was one of the best offensive forces in the sport that season. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 7.01 - Passer rating: 100 - Season stats: 3,118 yards, 26 touchdowns, 10 interceptions Russell Wilson was drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Considering Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck headlined the NFL Draft that year, it was not believed that Wilson would be a starter come Week 1, but that quickly changed. Going into the 2012 NFL Draft, Tarvaris Jackson was the Seattle Seahawks' starting quarterback, and the team signed NFL veteran quarterback Matt Flynn as an insurance policy on the injury-prone Jackson . It was assumed in the short term that either Jackson or Flynn would lead the franchise. Once training camp arrived, however, the Seahawks' quarterback position was uncertain. Jackson was traded to the Buffalo Bills, and Flynn was underwhelming at camp, forcing Head Coach Pete Carroll to take a gamble on his rookie quarterback, Wilson, in Week 1. Carroll, nor Wilson, ever looked back. Wilson was one of the best passing quarterbacks that season. He led the Seahawks to an 11-5 record and went on to win NFL Rookie of the Year. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 7.39 - Passer rating: 96 - Season stats: 2,210 yards, 20 touchdowns, 6 interceptions When Dan Marino was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1983, the NFL looked very different. Running the ball was the name of the game. The quarterback would either run the football himself at the line of scrimmage or hand it off to the running back, and the offensive linemen would claw and push the pile forward as the runner powered his legs. It was not a pretty sight. However, Marino took a different approach, throwing the ball with a unique quick release for that era. He led the Dolphins to a 9-1 record after replacing David Woodley midway through his rookie season, ending with a 12-4 record. He went on to win Rookie of the Year and was the first rookie to start a Pro Bowl. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 7.47 - Passer rating: 100.8 - Season stats: 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, 5 interceptions When C.J. Stroud was drafted No. 2 by the Houston Texans last year, there were a lot of questions, not about his ability, but about the organization that he would be playing for. The Texans were coming off of a 3-13-1 season in 2022, finishing with the worst record in the league, and a lot of volatility in its front office. The team fired its head coach and a top executive before the draft. Weeks later, the team hired former Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans as its next head coach. While Ryans is a defensive-minded coach, Stroud was seen as a key ingredient to the team's success since Ryans hired his coaching staff around the quarterback. Stroud led the NFL in yards and TD-to-interception ratio during his rookie season, which is an efficiency statistic considering he didn't get his first interception until his sixth regular-season game against the New Orleans Saints. While Stroud was a part of the league MVP conversation for most of the season, he didn't ultimately win the title. However, he was named 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and his rookie season is seen as one of the best in NFL history. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 7.47 - Passer rating: 102.4 - Season stats: 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, 5 interceptions Leading into the 2012 draft, it wasn't a matter of whether Washington would pick a quarterback, it was a matter of who. After several seasons of mediocre quarterback play and losing seasons from the likes of Jason Campbell, Donovan McNabb, and Rex Grossman, it was time for a new face to lead the offense. At No. 2, Washington selected Robert Griffin III making him the second quarterback selected in the 2012 NFL draft behind Andrew Luck. Griffin started his rookie year campaign with one of the best performances football fans have ever seen. He completed 19 of his 26 pass attempts for 320 yards and 2 touchdowns, beating the New Orleans Saints. That game earned him the highest passer rating by a rookie ever, 158.3. He now shares that record with Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota. Griffin III went on to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012. - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 7.86 - Passer rating: 104.9 - Season stats: 3,667 yards, 23 touchdowns, 4 interceptions Dak Prescott is statistically the best rookie quarterback ever, racking up the best passer rating as a rookie. After losing his first game, he led the Cowboys on an 11-game winning streak. That season, he led the team to its fourth-best season ever with a 13-3 record. Prescott was the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and became the first NFL quarterback to be drafted in the fourth round or later to start all 16 regular season games. EDITOR'S NOTE: On Football analyzes the biggest topics in the NFL from week to week. Hazlewood was one of the few bright lights in an Australian side that promised a lot but delivered very little in the first Test defeat to India in Perth. And on Saturday the Aussies were dealt a fresh blow ahead of the second Test, with Hazlewood ruled out of the match in Adelaide, while . Hazlewood was Australia's best bowler in Perth, troubling the visitors with the swinging ball on day one. The Aussie quick finished the first innings with 4-29 and the second with 1-28. His absence in Adelaide is a huge loss for the hosts. But Gavaskar believes there is more to it than the side strain being reported, hypothesising it could also have to do with an interview the Aussie quick gave, which sparked fears of a potential divide in the Australian team after seemingly laying the blame for the first Test defeat on the batsmen. “The panic in the Australian ranks is palpable, what with former players calling for heads to be chopped off and even some hinting at cracks in the Australian team after Josh Hazlewood's media interview where he suggested it was up to the batters to now do something," Gavaskar wrote in a column in the 'Indian Sportstar'. "Now, a few days later, Hazlewood is out of the second Test and possibly the series with a supposed side strain. Strange that, since nobody had noticed anything wrong with Hazlewood at that media conference. Mystery, mystery ... the likes of which used to be common in Indian cricket. Now it’s the Aussies and, like old (Australian coach Andrew) McDonald, I’m loving it.’" The Aussie batting line-up has been under immense pressure heading into the day-night Test in Adelaide having failed to score enough runs in Perth. are the two most out of form and calls are mounting for both to be dropped. While McDonald is unlikely to make changes to the batting line-up after the first Test his hand will be forced to change the bowling order. After Cricket Australia announced the news that Hazlewood was out of the second Test, Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett were both brought into the squad. But despite the duo being brought into the side, Scott Boland is the most likely replacement for Hazlewood. The Aussie quick has always delivered when handed the baggy green and the 35-year-old will enjoy the movement with the pink ball. Hazlewood is not the only injury concern for the Aussies, with Marsh also in doubt after being called upon to bowl 17 overs in the first Test in Perth. Marsh has not been a regular with the ball since his return to the Test fold, but due to the absence of Cameron Green, he was called on to help out the veteran bowling attack. And he reportedly pulled up very sore following the first Test. claimed the all-rounder was in doubt for the day-night Test due to his fitness. “We knew that Mitch was slightly underdone coming in but I thought the performance in the first innings was satisfactory,” McDonald said when leaving Perth. Marsh has since declared he will be fit to play in Adelaide, but there are reports he might be used as a batter only. If he can't bowl in Adelaide, selectors might opt to bring in Beau Webster, either to replace Marsh or even Hazlewood, considering his all-round abilities, which would lengthen Australia's struggling batting order. Last month, Webster was one of the few standouts in the Australia A game against India having scored 33 and 61 not out in the first win. He then backed it up with figures of 3-49 in the second hit-out having also scored 46 not out in the second innings. And in the Sheffield Shield last week, Webster has starred for Tasmania against NSW. The all-rounder finished the first innings with 61 runs off 81 balls and then took 3-81.
