In August 2018, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe (PSP) began its long journey to study the Sun’s outer corona. After several gravity-assist maneuvers with Venus, the probe broke Helios 2 ‘s distance record and became the closest object to the Sun on October 29th, 2018 . Since then, the Parker probe’s highly elliptical orbit has allowed it to pass through the Sun’s corona several times (“touch the Sun”). On December 24th, 2024 , NASA confirmed that their probe made its closest approach to the Sun, passing just 6 million km (3.8 million mi) above the surface – roughly 0.04 times the distance between the Sun and Earth (0.04 AU). In addition to breaking its previous distance record , the PSP passed through the solar atmosphere at a velocity of about 692,000 km/h (430,000 mph). This is equivalent to about 0.064% the speed of light, making the Parker Solar Probe the fastest human-made object ever. After the spacecraft made its latest pass, it sent a beacon tone to confirm that it made it through safely and was operating normally – which was received on December 26th. These close passes allow the PSP to conduct science operations that will expand our knowledge of the origin and evolution of solar wind. Every flyby the probe made with Venus in the past six years brought it closer to the Sun in its elliptical orbit. As of November 6th, 2024 , the spacecraft reached an optimal orbit that brings it close enough to study the Sun and the processes that influence space weather but not so close that the Sun’s heat and radiation will damage it. To ensure the spacecraft can withstand temperatures in the corona, the Parker probe relies on a carbon foam shield that can withstand temperatures between 980 and 1425 ° C (1,800 and 2,600 degrees ° F). This shield also keeps the spacecraft instruments shaded and at room temperature to ensure they can operate in the solar atmosphere. Said Associate Administrator Nicky Fox, who leads the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) at NASA Headquarters in Washington, in a recent NASA press release : “Flying this close to the Sun is a historic moment in humanity’s first mission to a star. By studying the Sun up close, we can better understand its impacts throughout our solar system, including on the technology we use daily on Earth and in space, as well as learn about the workings of stars across the universe to aid in our search for habitable worlds beyond our home planet.” Nour Rawafi, the project scientist for the Parker Solar Probe at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL), is part of the team that designed, built, and operates the spacecraft. “[The] Parker Solar Probe is braving one of the most extreme environments in space and exceeding all expectations,” he said . “This mission is ushering a new golden era of space exploration, bringing us closer than ever to unlocking the Sun’s deepest and most enduring mysteries.” The Parker Solar Probe was first proposed in a 1958 report by the National Academy of Sciences’ Space Science Board , which recommended “a solar probe to pass inside the orbit of Mercury to study the particles and fields in the vicinity of the Sun.” While the concept was proposed again in the 1970s and 1980s, it would take several more decades for the technology and a cost-effective mission to be realized. The Parker Solar Probe also made several interesting and unexpected finds during previous close passes. During its first pass into the solar atmosphere in 2021 , the spacecraft discovered that the outer boundary of the corona is characterized by spikes and valleys, contrary to expectations. It also discovered the origin of switchbacks (zig-zag structures) in the solar wind within the photosphere. Since then, the spacecraft has spent more time in the corona, closely examining most of the Sun’s critical processes. The probe’s discoveries are not limited to the Sun either. As noted, one of the PSP’s primary objectives is to study how solar activity influences “space weather,” referring to the interaction of solar wind with the planets of the Solar System. For instance, the probe has captured multiple images of Venus during its many gravity assists, documented the planet’s radio emissions, and the first complete image of Venus’ orbital dust ring. The probe has also been repeatedly blasted by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that swept up dust as they passed through the Solar System. “We now understand the solar wind and its acceleration away from the Sun,” said Adam Szabo, the Parker Solar Probe mission scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “This close approach will give us more data to understand how it’s accelerated closer in.” The probe even offered a new perspective on the comet NEOWISE by capturing images from its unique vantage point. Now that the mission team knows the probe is safe, they are waiting for it to reach a location where it can transmit the data collected from its latest solar pass. “The data that will come down from the spacecraft will be fresh information about a place that we, as humanity, have never been,” said Joe Westlake, the director of the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters. “It’s an amazing accomplishment.” The spacecraft’s next solar passes are planned for March 22nd, 2025, and June 19th, 2025. Further Reading: NASANEW YORK — No ex-president had a more prolific and diverse publishing career than Jimmy Carter . His more than two dozen books included nonfiction, poetry, fiction, religious meditations and a children’s story. His memoir “An Hour Before Daylight” was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2002, while his 2006 best-seller “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” stirred a fierce debate by likening Israel’s policies in the West Bank to the brutal South African system of racial segregation. And just before his 100th birthday, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation honored him with a lifetime achievement award for how he wielded "the power of the written word to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding.” In one recent work, “A Full Life,” Carter observed that he “enjoyed writing” and that his books “provided a much-needed source of income.” But some projects were easier than others. “Everything to Gain,” a 1987 collaboration with his wife, Rosalynn, turned into the “worst threat we ever experienced in our marriage,” an intractable standoff for the facilitator of the Camp David accords and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. According to Carter, Rosalynn was a meticulous author who considered “the resulting sentences as though they have come down from Mount Sinai, carved into stone.” Their memories differed on various events and they fell into “constant arguments.” They were ready to abandon the book and return the advance, until their editor persuaded them to simply divide any disputed passages between them. “In the book, each of these paragraphs is identified by a ‘J’ or an ‘R,’ and our marriage survived,” he wrote. Here is a partial list of books by Carter: “Keeping Faith: Memoirs of a President” “The Blood of Abraham: Insights into the Middle East” (With Rosalynn Carter) “Everything to Gain: Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life” “An Outdoor Journal: Adventures and Reflections” “Turning Point: A Candidate, a State, and a Nation Come of Age” “Always a Reckoning, and Other Poems” (With daughter Amy Carter) “The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer” “Living Faith” “The Virtues of Aging” “An Hour Before Daylight: Memories of a Rural Boyhood” “Christmas in Plains: Memories” “The Hornet’s Nest: A Novel of the Revolutionary War” “Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis” “Faith & Freedom: The Christian Challenge for the World” “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” “A Remarkable Mother” “Beyond the White House” “We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land: A Plan That Will Work” “White House Diary” “NIV Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter” “A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power” “A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety”
Bare-knuckle politics For a long time, local elections had been trivialised and dismissed as an insignificant gauge of public opinion. However, stiffening competition between parties in national politics has been the reason many are now seeing local polls in a completely different light. In fact, the Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) chairman elections, which elect people to the highest positions on local administrative bodies, are being viewed as a prequel to the general election less than three years from now. It is no wonder then that PAO chairman elections in strategic provinces have attracted prominent figures from major parties to campaign rallies as the stakes are high. A source said PAO races are barometers of a political party's popularity even though voters' behaviour in local and general elections are worlds apart. For instance, PAO polls choose public office holders who deal strictly with local issues, with the scope of their work being limited to the boundaries of their respective provinces. That said, the size of the electorate is not that great so certain conveniences such as advance voting or outside-constituency voting are non-existent in local polls. All PAO chairman polls are supposed to take place on the same day in February next year, as the chairmen's terms expire at the same time. However, some, including those closely linked to major parties, have employed a tactic to boost their chances of re-election. They have resorted to quitting their posts early while still popular and seeking re-election. Also, waiting until February would only allow competitors to build strength. All eyes were fixed on the main opposition People's Party and the ruling Pheu Thai Party, the two biggest parties, respectively, who were set on a collision course in some PAO elections. The most-watched contest was in Udon Thani, where any amicable ties remaining between the two parties were close to being torn to shreds. Now, on opposing sides, the two parties were once close allies during the Prayut Chan-o-cha administration. They were both opposition parties and belonged to the pro-democracy group. But after the departure of the Prayut administration and the failed attempt to form a new government together, Pheu Thai and the then Move Forward Party (MFP) -- the PP's predecessor -- parted company. Nonetheless, the MFP, as the leading opposition party, was criticised for being soft on Pheu Thai. It came across as being half-hearted in scrutinising the government's performance, and its leaders appeared to hold their tongues when they had the chance to go on the offensive against Pheu Thai in and outside of parliament. So it raised quite a few eyebrows when the PP, which was formed when the MFP was ordered dissolved by the Constitutional Court for attempting to subvert the constitutional monarchy, fired a broadside at Pheu Thai in the recent PAO chairman poll in Udon Thani. On one of the rally stages, Chaithawat Tulathon, a former MFP leader and now a member of the Progressive Movement and a People's Party campaign assistant, slammed former premier Thaksin Shinawatra for suggesting the PP was bent on passing too many laws, saying the government has failed to grasp the concept of constructive legislative duty. Mr Chaithawat also criticised government MPs for being lame ducks in their legislative work. He also rebuked Thaksin, who is deeply respected by Pheu Thai, for having claimed during the Udon Thani PAO campaign that the government was dismantling monopolies in the energy sector to make the cost of living more affordable. "[So] why is the energy concession still in the hands of a single company?" he said. The source said: "The gloves are off." The PP might have figured that being too friendly with Pheu Thai would have a negative impact, the source said. With the next general election not too far off, it was high time the PP presented itself as a strong and dependable alternative in the national polls. Also, the more Pheu Thai is beset by threats to government stability the PP will have more opportunities to make inroads among undecided voters by positioning itself as an untainted and non-controversial party. Issues threatening government stability include the Thai-Cambodian memorandum of understanding (MoU) on joint development in the Gulf of Thailand and the reported move to nominate former finance minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong as chairman of the Bank of Thailand board. This comes amid allegations he will be Pheu Thai's proxy to bend the country's financial policies to the party's will. Aside from the growing rivalry between Pheu Thai and PP, the Democrat Party was given a rude awakening when it was defeated in the PAO chairman contest in Nakhon Si Thammarat on Nov 24. Some analysts said it was the first sign of the Democrat Party being emasculated after traditionally putting up a strong showing in most constituencies across the South. However, the party's eagerness to join the coalition government led by Pheu Thai, its arch-rival, may have been the last straw prompting many Democrats to switch sides and vote for Warin Chinawong, a former provincial chamber of commerce chairwoman. The Democrats voting for Ms Warin was punishment for Kanokporn Detdecho, who was defeated. Ms Kanokporn, who belongs to the Detdecho political dynasty in the province and is a former Nakhon Si Thammarat PAO chairwoman, received 294,559 votes whereas Ms Warin won the PAO election with 328,603 votes. The Detdecho family is led by Chaichana Detdecho, a Nakhon Si Thammarat MP and deputy leader of the Democrat Party. A bill proposed by Pheu Thai list MP Prayuth Siripanich aimed at preventing military coups has divided opinion into two camps. Prayuth: 'Coup bill' splits opinions Yet, both sides share the same doubt about its effectiveness, according to observers. Under the bill seeking to revise the Defence Ministry Administration Act, the cabinet would have the authority to endorse the appointment of generals proposed by a committee consisting of the defence minister and the chiefs of the armed forces. The bill also proposes amending Section 35 by prohibiting the use of military force or military personnel to seize or control the government's administrative power. It calls for harsher penalties against military officers who violate or are suspected of planning to violate Section 35. These officers can be suspended by order of the prime minister to allow for an investigation. While both sides doubt whether the bill can do what it is intended to do, one argues against it as they believe it could give politicians undue influence over Defence Ministry affairs. Moreover, military figures may feel threatened and create conflict between the government and the armed forces as the bill could see their control reduced. The other camp speaks in favour of the bill, believing it is still worth "experimenting" with. At the very least, the country would have a layer of legal protection against future coup attempts and raise awareness that coups should not be tolerated. Jade Donavanik, a scholar and president of the College of Asian Scholars' Faculty of Law, said the contentious bill is an attempt to limit military power, and some "deep state" players believe it could undermine the institution of the monarchy. He said the bill has ventured into areas where even democratic countries like the US hesitate to get involved. In those countries, there are mechanisms in place to limit political involvement in military appointments and the selection of high-ranking officials to ensure professional independence, according to the analyst. However, Mr Prayuth's bill allows the prime minister and the defence minister to interfere in the allocation of military roles and responsibilities while curbing powers related to declaring martial law, he said. Currently, military officers can declare it within their jurisdictions, but to lift it requires royal approval. Mr Jade believes that coalition parties are unlikely to support the proposal. "It will be extremely hard for the bill to sail through parliament," he said. At least two coalition parties -- Bhumjaithai and United Thai Nation (UTN) -- and the opposition Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) have openly criticised the bill and vowed not to support it if it is tabled in parliament. Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul was quoted as saying that there are only a few conditions that provide a precursor for coups, and such conditions stem mostly from politicians. "I've witnessed several coups in the past since the Chatichai Choohavan administration was ousted by one in 1991. Coups can be avoided if certain conditions do not occur," Mr Anutin said. The PPRP described the bill as a move to weaken the military and said it could be turned into a tool for political gain, with PPRP spokesman Piya Tavichai saying that the party, under the direction of PPRP leader Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, would do all it can to block the bill. According to Mr Jade, coups are best prevented through clean and fair politics along with the implementation of policies that promote education, healthcare, job security, and economic development, all of which contribute to stability in the country. When the military stages a coup without a justifiable pretext, it is like smashing a raw egg against a rock -- the egg [coup] breaks and becomes useless. "But if politicians do their job right, any coup attempt would fail, like a raw egg breaking against a rock. A coup is made possible by the misconduct of politicians," he said. Prime Minister and Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, plus party heavyweights such as Phumtham Wechayachai, have distanced the party from the proposed amendment, saying it has not sponsored it. Mr Prayuth's bill is open for public opinions until Jan 1 on parliament's website. It is one of three bills seeking to amend the Defence Ministry Administration Act. The two others are sponsored by the main opposition People's Party and former defence minister Sutin Klungsang.
The intra-family differences in the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) unfolded in a dramatic fashion at the general council meeting on December 28 after the party’s founder S. Ramadoss announced the appointment of yet another family member as the head of PMK’s youth wing. A war of words erupted at the meeting in Puducherry between the party patriarch and his son Anbumani soon after Ramadoss announced the decision to appoint Parasuraman Mukundan, the son of his eldest daughter Gandhimathi, as the president of the youth wing. Mukundan joined the party four months ago. Soon after the announcement, Anbumani—a Rajya Sabha MP who led the party in the recent parliamentary election and who shared the stage—retorted: “He has just joined. What experience does he have?” The crowd agreed with him, jeering at the selection loudly. A visibly agitated Ramadoss shot back: “I created this party. I will make the decisions here. If anyone does not want to obey my decision, he can leave the party.” Anbumani persisted. “You can appoint anyone...[but] appoint someone with experience. We need good workers in the field. We need those with good qualities.” He also wondered: “How can someone who is just coming in be appointed as the youth wing in-charge?” Irked over the dissent, Ramadoss shouted back: “You all must listen to me.” “You do what you want,” responded Anbumani. Not willing to let go, Ramdoss continued: “The one who doesn’t listen to me does not have a place in this party.” “ Adhu seri [That’s right.],” said Anbumani, who at this point seem to be going through an emotional roller-coaster. Ramadoss, who was clearly in a combative mood, twisted the knife. “ Seri na seri. Po appo [Then, you can leave],” he said. Also Read | PMK’s alliance with the BJP in Tamil Nadu defies logic Anbumani stopped responding at this point but Ramadoss continued. “I am telling you again. Mukundan is being appointed as the youth wing president,” he declared to a stunned audience. “Clap your hands now,” he ordered, and the crowd obliged. It appeared that Anbumani did not expect the cadre to clap when Ramadoss ordered them to. He was heard over the din: “Give more [positions] to the family.” Anbumani’s stance might have appeared principled if not for the fact his wife Sowmiya was PMK’s Dharmapuri candidate in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Sowmiya was not known to be an active PMK officer-bearer though she ran a non-governmental organisation. A PhD in sociology and biodiversity, Sowmiya has yet to comment on the spat between her husband and father-in-law. After the meeting was over, supporters of Anbumani blocked Ramadoss’ car as he was leaving the venue and raised slogans hailing Anbumani. Ramdoss smiled at the cadre with folded hands. Having made their displeasure clear, the crowd made way for the car. A new base Anbumani used the stage to tell the cadre that he had opened a new office for himself at Panayur, just outside Chennai, and that they could come there to meet him. Ramadoss operates out of Thailapuram, about 150 km south west of Chennai. Several national and State political leaders have travelled to this nondescript town in Viluppuram district to cut deals with the PMK ahead of elections. Though Ramadoss appeared to have won the battle of the day, judging by the cadres’ overall reaction, Anbumani seems to have the upper hand within the party. But some of the old school office-bearers, including the 72-year-old G.K. Mani, who has been the party president for over a quarter of a century (and now honorary president), is unlikely to act against Ramadoss. The father-son tussle stems from the fact that the PMK has not been anywhere close to the corridors of power since 2014. In 2016, it went alone in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election, with the theme “Change, Progress, Anbumani” [” Maatram, Munnetram, Anbumani ”] which was a rip-off from the former US President Barack Obama’s election campaign in the 2008 presidential election. The PMK lost all the seats it had contested. In the 2019 parliamentary election, the PMK contested seven seats in the AIADMK-BJP alliance and lost all. The party was again in the wrong camp in the 2021 Assembly election, as it contested 23 seats as part of the AIADMK alliance and won a mere five. It remained with the BJP and contested the 2024 parliamentary election and lost all seats. At the meeting, Anbumani, under whose leadership the party suffered several reverses in these elections, contended that all losses were a lesson. He asserted that in 2026, the PMK will be a part of the coalition that forms the government in Tamil Nadu. Also Read | How fake news, propaganda, and big money power BJP’s Tamil Nadu strategy But that is a tall claim and Ramadoss is seeking to chart a new path for the party he founded with the help of some seniors who desire to see a change in direction. A few party seniors believe that the 2026 State Assembly election will be “a make-or-break event” for the PMK. Some do not want to be seen courting the BJP, which is seen as a baggage in the State Assembly election. However, Anbumani is said to be opposed to ditching the BJP. This could probably be due to the potential for a backlash in the form of new trouble over old cases stirred up by Central investigative agencies. With a few senior party members already trying to douse the fire, the latest spat between the father and the son may soon fizzle out. However, unless the equations within the PMK’s first family are set right, the party could face rough times, especially with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam already making inroads into the PMK’s stronghold in north and north-western Tamil Nadu. A Dallas man who tried to fly overseas to join the Russian military and fight against Ukraine was sentenced on Friday to six months in prison for violating the terms of his probation for storming the U.S. Capitol four years ago. Kevin Loftus, a 56-year-old veteran of the U.S. Army, was stopped from boarding an Oct. 28 flight from Dallas to Tbilisi, Georgia, by way of Istanbul, Turkey, when Turkish Airlines identified a “security flag” associated with him, according to federal prosecutors. Loftus didn't have the court's permission to travel internationally or to drive from Texas to Iowa , where the FBI arrested him three days after his flight plans fell apart, prosecutors said. Loftus told the FBI that he had hoped to secure a 90-day visa to travel to Russia, where he intended to apply for temporary residency. Loftus said he had used the Telegram messaging platform to communicate with a man who would connect him with the Russian Territorial Defense Unit, a volunteer military corps. “Loftus said he had already sent the man approximately $1200 to purchase equipment for Russian soldiers,” prosecutors wrote. “Loftus said his intent was to fight for Russia and against Ukraine.” Loftus declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich sentenced him for the probation violation. The judge said Loftus has repeatedly violated court orders. “He doesn't think these rules should apply to him,” Friedrich said. “He wants to be above the law.” Defense attorney Benjamin Schiffelbein said Loftus wanted to enlist in the Russian military because he “felt bad” for Russian soldiers and wanted to help them. “He had no idea whether they could make use of him," the lawyer said. Loftus, a six-year Army veteran, intended to permanently relocate to another country, according to prosecutors. “And his planned travel was for the express purpose of joining a foreign army to take up arms against one of this country’s allies and in opposition to this country’s foreign policy,” they wrote. In January 2021, Loftus traveled from Wisconsin to Washington , D.C., to attend then-President Donald Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House. After joining the mob of Trump supporters at the Capitol, he entered the building and took photographs. He spent approximately five minutes inside the Capitol. Loftus was arrested at his Wisconsin home several days after the riot. He pleaded guilty in October 2021 to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building. After his arrest, Loftus posted comments about his case on social media, referring to himself as “famous” and a “hero” for taking part in the Jan. 6 attack. “Loftus also stated that he gained that fame by ‘standing up for all Americans’ because he ‘broke the law,’ and he would file lawsuits against unidentified persons after the criminal case was over,” prosecutors wrote. Prosecutors recommended 30 days of imprisonment for Loftus, but Friedrich initially sentenced him to three years of probation. For his probation violation, prosecutors requested a six-month prison sentence. They noted that Loftus, while on probation, also was arrested in December 2023 and charged with driving while intoxicated in Richardson, Texas. Loftus was required to attend a substance abuse program, but he avoided jail time for that violation. Over 1,500 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related crimes. More than 1,000 of them have been convicted and sentenced, with roughly two-thirds receiving a term of imprisonment ranging from a few days to 22 years. Trump has repeatedly vowed to pardon Capitol rioters, but the district court judges in Washington, D.C., typically have refused to postpone sentencings, plea hearings and trials until after the president-elect returns to the White House.

When I learned to read, I made friends with our school librarian. It was then that I started my love affair with books. I read constantly. Books were my constant companion and where I got my knowledge of the world around me. I did not have books at home. Today I am an advocate, and I am very concerned about Iowa’s book ban’s impact. The librarian and teachers would always help me pick appropriate books and make sure although my reading level was high that I was mature enough to understand the books. They were educated professionals and knew about child development and literacy. I have children of my own now and I expect the professionals who are trained to help my children pick books on library day. Unfortunately, our legislature does not. The board of education is having a session for public comments on Dec. 11 to help them formulate the rules on how our schools must follow the vague legislation which passed. The email to send a comment is Thomas.mayes@iowa.gov , and I hope you will send a note to tell them that we should not ban books and propose suggestions on the new rules being developed so our children can get a quality education that includes reading the books other children do to prepare them for the future. People are also reading... As a silent rebellion, I personally will be stocking little libraries in our area with banned books I know changed my life. I encourage you to do the same. AAP also made a reference of the growing law and order decline in the Union Territory and threw light on the Delhi Police inability to curb it. It should be noted that being a Union Territory, the Delhi Police is governed by the Union Home Ministry and not the Delhi government. Last time they got eight seats, this time Delhi people will give zero seats to BJP,” her X post read. पिछली बार 8 सीटें आयीं थी, इस बार दिल्ली वाले भाजपा को ज़ीरो सीट देंगे pic.twitter.com/LgJGN1aQ0T Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged the attacker wanted to set Kejriwal afire after throwing spirit on him. Kejriwal and the security personnel accompanying him were later seen wiping their faces. “A man threw spirit on him (Kejriwal). We could smell it. And there was an attempt to burn him (Kejriwal) alive. “The man was carrying spirit in one hand and a matchbox in the other hand.
