Since cutting ties with OpenAI, Musk founded xAI. The company has been growing rapidly, including plans to to 1 million GPUs. In its latest round of funding, the startup $6 billion from a host of investment companies. xAI’s progress is accelerating rapidly. We have closed our Series C funding round of $6 billion with participation from key investors including A16Z, Blackrock, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Kingdom Holdings, Lightspeed, MGX, Morgan Stanley, OIA, QIA, Sequoia Capital, Valor Equity Partners and Vy Capital, amongst others. Strategic investors NVIDIA and AMD also participated and continue to support xAI in rapidly scaling our infrastructure. The company took the opportunity to tout the progress it has been making on its AI models. xAI’s most powerful model yet, Grok 3, is currently training and we are now focused on launching innovative new consumer and enterprise products that will leverage the power of Grok, Colossus, and X to transform the way we live, work, and play. The funds from this financing round will be used to further accelerate our advanced infrastructure, ship groundbreaking products that will be used by billions of people, and accelerate the research and development of future technologies enabling the company’s mission to understand the true nature of the universe. xAI is primarily focused on the development of advanced AI systems that are truthful, competent, and maximally beneficial for all of humanity. Musk has positioned Grok as a less politically correct AI model, one willing to tackle topics ChatGPT, Gemini, and others won’t touch. The round of investment is a significant vote of confidence in xAI, and should go a long way toward helping further xAI’s ability to challenge the industry leaders.Stock market today: Tech stocks and AI pull Wall Street to more records

The Washington men’s basketball team gets one more chance to fix its flaws before starting an 18-game trek through the Big Ten next week. Following a disappointing 79-70 loss to crosstown rival Seattle U on Monday, the Huskies were anything but festive during a short two-day holiday break. “I’m not flushing nothing,” coach Danny Sprinkle said following the loss. “We’ll see them on Thursday night after they get back from Christmas.” Washington has had three days to prepare for Sunday’s noon tuneup against New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), which returns to Alaska Airlines Arena for the first time since 2007. At first glance, this appears to be a one-sided matchup that favors the Huskies (8-4, 0-2) who desperately need a feel-good moment before hosting Thursday’s pivotal matchup against Maryland. The Highlanders (2-11) are ranked No. 352 among 364 Division I teams in the NET. NJIT also has a 13-game road losing streak that began last February and includes eight defeats this season. However, there’s no certainties when it comes to the Huskies, who are 118 th in the NET and 103 in the KenPom rankings. Washington appeared formidable while trouncing former Pac-12 rival Washington State 89-73, and UW was regrettable frightful five days later in its next outing while falling behind by 22 points in the second half before a last-minute comeback fell short and resulted in the first loss to Seattle U since 1978. The disappointing setback drew comparisons to an 85-61 defeat against USC in December when the Huskies didn’t put up much of a fight in their first Big Ten home conference game. “We got to have guys step up and it pisses me off because we have better players than we show,” Sprinkle said Monday. “But our competitiveness that’s what pisses me off. Guys better start competing.” After 12 games, it’s become apparent that Washington isn’t going to win many shootouts with an offense that averages 72.8 points and ranks 17 th in the Big Ten in scoring. Considering UW ranks near the bottom of the league in field-goal shooting percentage (44.0% — 16 th ), three-point field goal shooting (32.8% — 14 th ) and free-throw shooting (62.4% — 18 th ), Sprinkle is putting an emphasis on a relatively resilient defense that's been imposing at times and allows just 69.8 points per game. “We have to become better when we’re not making shots,” Sprinkle said. “We can’t be front-runners. ... If we’re not making shots, we still have to lock in on defense and be a tough, physical team and get stops to hold us in the game until we do start making shots.” Star forward Great Osobor has drawn the ire of disgruntled UW fans after receiving a reported $2 million NIL deal and so far falling short of last season’s breakout performance when he won the Mountain West Player of the Year award while carrying Utah State to a 28-7 record and the NCAA tournament. However, Osobor leads Washington in scoring (14.4 points per game), rebounds (8.9), assists (3.7) and minutes (32.3) despite drawing double coverage from opponents. “It’s hard when you got five guys guarding you,” Sprinkle said. “Every time he dribbles he’s got three guys around him. We got to have guys step up, to be honest. I hold Great to a high standard. I thought he could have played better. ... But we got to play better both offensively and defensively.” Due to injuries to forwards Franck Kepnang (knee) and Wilhelm Breidenbach (concussion) and the search for consistent production, the Huskies have used seven different starting lineups. When asked if a leader is emerging on a team that includes 11 newcomers and three holdovers, Sprinkle was unsure. “I don’t know. You hope so.” he said. “You hope the older guys take ownership. I think Great has done a pretty good job from the summer. Obviously, he’s the most comfortable because he knows what I expect. “But there’s been times, even though he’s a freshman, Zoom (Diallo) has a really good voice. He’s got good energy and guys respect him because he’s talking a lot. But we need some of these other guys.”Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoys winning start with LeicesterMONUMENT – With the stroke of his pen, Court Towns secured his college football future, continued a pipeline from Palmer Ridge to Air Force and saved his mother the concern of updating the main colors in her wardrobe. “It’s a great color, blue, isn’t it?” Towns said Wednesday at a signing ceremony in his high school’s auditorium, located two exits to the north on I-25 where the 6-foot-4, 300-pound center will play for a Falcons athletic department with which his mother, Jen Block, is a leading figure. Block, a 1992 graduate and volleyball standout at Air Force who retired as a Col., is now the executive director of athletic programs at the academy. She is the senior government official in the athletic department. Her husband, Denny Towns, is a retired Lt. Col. in the Air Force. “My husband and I are so grateful, so proud of him,” Block said. “He had a lot of options, but he chose to go to Air Force, to play at Air Force, to serve our country.” Block had a brief peak at what an alternative might look like last month when daughter Olivia faced Air Force as a member of UCCS’s women’s basketball team. Block joked that she tried to wear neutral colors for that contest. No such conflict will arise in football after Court opted for Air Force over offers that included Navy. “I don’t have to buy any new colors,” Block said. “It’s going to be so easy to cheer for him.” Towns will enter the academy via the prep school, leaving just one year where he will overlap with another Palmer Ridge graduate on the offensive line – Alec Falk, who broke into the starting lineup this past year at left guard. Former Air Force quarterback Isaiah Sanders also came through Palmer Ridge’s program, which is where longtime Falcons coach Troy Calhoun’s son, Tyler, played. “I think he translates very well,” said Palmer Ridge coach Zach Carlton, who has served as head coach for the past two years but has been with the program since 2015. “He fits the mold for what they’re looking for at the academy — super hard-working kid, disciplined kid, obviously the grades are there. “He’s a super-high football IQ kid, so whatever they throw at him he’s going to figure out, too.” Palmer Ridge runs a ground-based offense, which Towns believes will help prepare him for an Air Force attack that generally ranks among the nation’s top-five rushing offenses. Towns said he understood the circumstances — inexperience and injuries — that led Air Force to a 1-7 start this season, but he was also energized by the team’s four-game winning streak to close the year while averaging more than 300 rushing yards per game during the finishing flurry. “That’s Diesel football,” Towns said, referring to the collective nickname for the Falcons’ offensive line. “That’s Air Force football. That was fun to watch.” With inside information as to what to expect from all angles at the academy, Towns said his lone cause for concern is living up to a standard those around him will expect. “The only thing I’d be nervous about is I’d let down my teammates,” said Towns, who helped the Bears to a 45-6 record over the past four years. “So I just have to keep on pushing myself and make sure that I give my everything so I don’t disappoint my coaches or my teammates.” This attitude is why his mother, who is constantly in close contact with cadet-athletes in her role in addition to once being one herself, sees this as a mutually beneficial match. “I don’t know if it’s because he’s an O-linemen or just who he is, but he’s never concerned about getting the credit or wanting to be in the limelight,” Block said. “He just wants to be a team player and get the job done. That’s Air Force football, so I think he’s going to fit in perfectly with the culture.”
The French Parliament on Dec 4 backed a vote of no-confidence in Prime Minister Michel Barnier, ousting him and his Cabinet. PARIS – As France prepared for deepening political turmoil after a parliamentary vote on Dec 4 that toppled the government, one thing was clear: The paralysis risked unleashing a fresh wave of distress across one of Europe’s biggest economies. Business leaders, who had been grappling with uncertainty for months, say they are bracing for a hit to growth. Unions warn of widening layoffs. Thousands of civil servants, including teachers, hospital staff, airport employees and workers in the gas and electricity sectors, are planning street protests across the country for Dec 5. France’s economy was already in a rough patch when a deeply divided Parliament backed a vote of no-confidence in Prime Minister Michel Barnier, ousting him and his Cabinet and leaving the country without a functioning government or a budget for 2025 to rein in France’s troubled finances. Mr Barnier is likely to remain as a caretaker until President Emmanuel Macron appoints a new prime minister, and France will use the 2024 budget until a new one can be assembled. In the meantime, the government’s collapse “will make everything more serious and more difficult” for France, Mr Barnier said in a speech to Parliament before the vote. “At a time when economic growth in France is slowing markedly, this is bad news,” said Ms Charlotte de Montpellier, chief economist for France at ING bank. High energy costs and interest rates, a downturn in domestic industry, falling consumer confidence and a slowdown in business investment have left growth largely flat in France for the past two years. Political instability since Macron dissolved parliament in the summer and held snap elections that led to a more deeply fractured legislature caused businesses to further pause investment and hiring. The schism on Dec 4 risks ushering in “a new period of instability”, said the Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises, which represents the bulk of French businesses that make up the backbone of activity. “A France without a budget would open the door to a debt crisis, the consequences of which would hit economic players hard,” the group said. The turmoil heralds a sombre chapter for France, a cornerstone of Europe’s euro currency union. France has long been an engine of growth alongside Germany, but both countries have been steadily weakened since 2021 by Europe’s energy crisis and high interest rates, turning them from leaders of the bloc into laggards. But in recent months, fiscal troubles have piled on France’s problems. The country has been grappling with a ballooning debt and deficit, the result of unbridled government spending by Mr Macron since Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. That has fuelled concerns about the country’s creditworthiness by investors who have pushed France’s borrowing costs above those of crisis-scarred Greece. The problems have started to nudge up unemployment, ending a brief but intense spree of job creation that was largely supported by public spending. The jobless rate, which fell to a 15-year low of 7.1 per cent in 2024, rose to 7.4 per cent in the autumn. France’s industry minister, Mr Marc Ferracci, said thousands of additional job cuts are likely in the coming months. The challenges have only grown as the state of France’s overstretched finances has become apparent. With a deficit that has jumped to 6.1 per cent of economic output, from 5.5 per cent in 2024, the country is now in worse fiscal straits than Greece, Spain and Italy. The country’s debt has exploded to more than €3.2 trillion (S$4.52 trillion), or more than 112 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product. The deficit had already started to widen during Macron’s first presidential term, after the yellow vest popular uprising in 2018 over a proposed gasoline tax increase set off nationwide protests by people struggling to make ends meet. Macron unleashed billions in subsidies and stimulus to quell the social maelstrom. Two years later, Covid-19 hit. Mr Macron, vowing to do “whatever it takes” to support the French economy, deployed hundreds of billions in spending to help companies furlough workers at 80 per cent of their pay, effectively nationalising a portion of private payrolls to prevent mass unemployment. The government also provided billions in cheap state-backed loans for companies. Just as the economy appeared to be recovering, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 sent energy prices soaring. Mr Macron authorised another round of major government spending to shield households and businesses. “Growth was financed through public spending,” Ms de Montpellier said. But the sustainability of the relief was not addressed, she added. “People knew that it was not going to last forever; now it’s actually the case.” NYTIMES Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reviewed the snow clearance operations in a video conference meeting with all deputy commissioners. Moderate to heavy snowfall was recorded across Kashmir from Friday, including the season's first snowfall in Srinagar city and other plain areas. In South Kashmir, heavy to very heavy snowfall was recorded in the plains, while central Kashmir’s plains received moderate snowfall. The plains of North Kashmir received light to moderate snowfall, officials said. The upper areas of the South Kashmir district received over two feet of snow, they added. Though the snowfall was welcomed by locals and tourists, it threw daily life out of gear. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) was closed for traffic due to snow, according to Traffic Department officials. They added that clearance work was hampered due to heavy snowfall at the Navyug Tunnel. Men and machinery are on the job, and commuters are advised to avoid travel until the weather improves and the road is cleared, the officials said. Train services on the Banihal-Baramulla section were suspended due to heavy snow accumulation on the tracks, railway officials said. Efforts to clear the track are underway, they added. Air traffic to and from Srinagar was also affected, with flight operations suspended, according to airport officials. "Due to bad weather conditions, all flights at Srinagar Airport have been cancelled. No flight operations have taken place at the airport since the morning due to inclement weather," officials said. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for updates. Flight operations have been affected since Friday evening. The authorities launched snow clearance operations at district headquarters and while most of the main roads and roads to hospitals were cleared by morning itself, interior roads were cleared by noon, the officials said. Abdullah directed the deputy commissioners to personally supervise snow clearance operations, emphasizing the need to obtain photographic evidence of cleared areas to ensure thorough removal and prevent roads from freezing as temperatures drop. District administrations were instructed to provide two-hourly updates to the CM's office and the chief secretary’s office. The Chief Engineer of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department informed the meeting that 90 per cent of the water supply across the valley had been restored, with efforts underway to address the remaining 10 per cent, officials said. The Divisional Commissioner of Jammu reported that power and water supplies in Jammu districts remained unaffected, while the chief secretary confirmed steady progress in restoring electricity feeders and assured that district hospitals were functioning smoothly. The chief minister stressed the importance of ensuring 100 per cent attendance of doctors and paramedical staff at all district and sub-district hospitals to effectively manage emergencies. Special instructions were issued to the deputy commissioner of Budgam to coordinate with airport authorities to assist stranded tourists and provide transportation if required, officials said. The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir assured that sufficient stocks of essential commodities, including food and other civil supplies, were available in all districts. Taking to X, Abdullah said most of the dysfunctional power feeders in the valley had been restored. "Out of forty-one 33KV feeders dysfunctional in Kashmir due to heavy snowfall, thirty-seven have been restored and charged. Similarly, out of 739 dysfunctional 11KV feeders, 639 have been restored and recharged, bringing major relief to the valley," Abdullah said. He said the majority of the remaining feeders were expected to be restored by the evening. Abdullah also toured several areas of Srinagar city and visited his assembly constituency, Ganderbal, to take stock of the situation, officials said. He made an unannounced visit to District Hospital Ganderbal and assessed the services available to patients during the inclement weather and reviewed the availability of essential medicines, staff on duty, and the functionality of the central heating system. Abdullah interacted with the hospital staff, as well as patients and their attendants. Speaking to media in Ganderbal, Abdullah said he wanted to visit his constituency to ensure that people did not face too many hardships due to the snow. "I wanted to see that the snow clearance operations on roads are sped up, take stock of hospital and essential services, and the restoration of electricity wherever the lines were snapped," he said. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures went up by several notches across the valley, the MeT Department said. Gulmarg, a town known for skiing activities in North Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 5 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam, the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra in South Kashmir, registered a minimum temperature of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius. Kashmir is currently under the grip of the 40-day 'Chillai-Kalan'- considered the harshest period of winter- which began on December 21.

Germany is to vote in an early election on Feb. 23 after Chancellor Olaf Schol z's three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalize the country's stagnant economy. Musk's guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag —a sister publication of POLITICO owned by the Axel Springer Group — published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month he supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. "The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country," Musk wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say the far-right party "can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality." The Tesla Motors CEO also wrote that his investment in Germany gave him the right to comment on the country's condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel, has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. An ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the technology billionaire challenged in his opinion piece the party's public image. "The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party's leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!" Musk's commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper's own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Musk's social media platform, X. "I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print," Eva Marie Kogel wrote. A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Musk's opinion piece. "Musk's diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong," Burgard wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Burgard — who is due to take over on Jan. 1 — said in a joint statement that the discussion over Musk's piece was "very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression." "This will continue to determine the compass of the "world" in the future. We will develop "Die Welt" even more decisively as a forum for such debates," they wrote to dpa.

A faceless system will streamline procedures allowing MSMEs to focus on growth and innovation," said Pankaj Chadha , chairman, of EEPC India. EEPC India in its pre-budget recommendation has also proposed that Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) related liabilities should be eligible for the Amnesty scheme . Some RCM issues, such as foreign bank charges and foreign business services, pose challenges for exporters who may be unaware of the charges or services provided. Since these issues are not fraudulent, they should fall under Section 73, which addresses genuine compliance concerns . "Exporters should be granted relief under the amnesty scheme, even if Show Cause Notices (SCNs) are issued under Section 74," Chadha said. Many of the EEPC India members have informed that they have received Show Cause Notices related to RCM; hence, an amnesty scheme is urgently needed for such issues. This cross-country train adventure game mimics the concept of traveling around the world in 80 days. Collect train cars and claim railways across the country. Each game takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes to complete, and every adventure is different. 5 Second Rule Ages 10+ This quick-paced game gives each player five seconds to name items on a certain topic. Although the topics are objectively easy —“Name 3 Mountains,” “Name 3 Types of Hats” or “Name 3 Super Heroes,” the pressure of the time crunch is likely to put you on edge. Race the clock and remain composed to win this game. You can even make up your own topics if you prefer. Half the fun is just hearing what other people blurt out, whether it’s relevant to the topic or not. Prices listed reflect time and date of publication and are subject to change.
