FRISCO, Texas (AP) — A rare win as a double-digit underdog came just in time to let the Dallas Cowboys believe their playoff hopes aren’t completely gone in 2024. Cooper Rush probably will need three more victories in a row filling in for the injured Dak Prescott for any postseason talk to be realistic. The thing is, the Cowboys (4-7) could be favored in two of those games, and already are by four points as an annual Thanksgiving Day host against the New York Giants (2-9) on Thursday, according to BetMGM. Not to mention the losing record at the moment for each of the next four opponents for the defending NFC East champions, playoff qualifiers each of the past three seasons. The Cowboys have a chance to make something of the improbable and chaotic 34-26 win at Washington that ended a five-game losing streak. “Behind the eight ball,” Micah Parsons said, the star pass rusher acknowledging the reality that Dallas hadn’t done much yet. “Let’s see how we can handle adversity and see if we can make a playoff run. But we got a long way to go.” It was a start, though, powered in part by the best 55 minutes from the Dallas defense since the opener, when the Cowboys dismantled Cleveland and looked the part of a Super Bowl contender. The last five minutes for the Dallas defense against the Commanders looked a lot like most of the nine games after that 33-17 victory over the Browns. Which is to say not very good. Jayden Daniels easily drove Washington 69 yards to a touchdown before throwing an 86-yard scoring pass in the final seconds to Terry McLaurin, who weaved through five defenders when a tackle might have ended the game. The Cowboys kept a 27-26 lead thanks to Austin Seibert’s second missed extra point, and withstood another blunder when Juanyeh Thomas returned an onside kick recovery for a TD rather than slide and leave one kneel-down from Rush to end the game. Dallas will have to remember it did hold a dynamic rookie quarterback’s offense to 251 yards before the madness of the ending in the Cowboys’ biggest upset victory since 2010 at the New York Giants. That one was too late to save the season. This one might not be. “We needed it,” embattled coach Mike McCarthy said. “It’s been frustrating, no doubt. We’ve acknowledged that. We’ve got another one right around the corner here, so we have to get some wins and get some momentum.” What’s working Rush ended a personal three-game losing streak with his best showing since the previous time he won as the replacement for Prescott, who is out for the season after surgery for a torn hamstring. The 117.6 passer rating was Rush’s best as a starter, and the NFL’s second-worst rushing attack played a solid complementary role with Rico Dowdle gaining 86 yards on 19 carries. What needs help KaVontae Turpin’s electrifying 99-yard kickoff return did more than lift the Cowboys when it appeared an 11-point lead might get away in the final five minutes. It eased the worst day of special teams for Dallas since John Fassel took over that phase four years ago. Suddenly struggling kicker Brandon Aubrey had one field-goal attempt blocked and missed another. Bryan Anger had a punt blocked. For the second time in five games, Aubrey’s attempt to bounce a kickoff in front of the return man backfired. The ball bounced outside the landing zone, putting the Commanders at the 40-yard line to start the second half and setting up the drive to the game’s first touchdown. Stock up CB Josh Butler, whose NFL debut earlier this season came five years after the end of his college career, had 12 tackles, a sack and three pass breakups. The pass breakups were the most by an undrafted Dallas player since 1994. Stock down Rookie LT Tyler Guyton, who has had an up-and-down season with injuries and performance issues, was benched immediately after getting called for a false start in the fourth quarter. His replacement, Asim Richards, could be sidelined with a high ankle sprain that executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones revealed on his radio show Monday. Veteran Chuma Edoga, who was the projected starter at Guyton’s position before a preseason toe injury, was active but didn’t play against the Commanders. He’s awaiting his season debut. Injuries The status of perennial All-Pro RG Zack Martin (ankle/shoulder) and LG Tyler Smith (ankle/knee) will be a question on the short week after both sat against Washington. Stephen Jones indicated Smith could be available and said the same of WR Brandin Cooks, who hasn’t played since Week 4 because of a knee issue. TE Jake Ferguson may miss at least a second week with a concussion. The short week might make it tough for CB Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) to return. Key number Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 75% — Rush’s completion rate, his best with at least 10 passes. He was 24 of 32 for 247 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. His other game with multiple TDs and no picks was a 25-10 victory over Washington two years ago, when he went 4-1 with Prescott sidelined by a broken thumb. Next steps There’s some extra rest after the short week, with Cincinnati making a “Monday Night Football” visit on Dec. 9. The next road game is at Carolina on Dec. 15. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement Advertisement
A judge on Monday granted a request by prosecutors to dismiss the election subversion case against Donald Trump because of a Justice Department policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. Judge Tanya Chutkan agreed to the request by Special Counsel Jack Smith to dismiss the case against the president-elect "without prejudice," meaning it could potentially be revived after Trump leaves the White House four years from now. "Dismissal without prejudice is appropriate here," Chutkan said, adding in the ruling that "the immunity afforded to a sitting President is temporary, expiring when they leave office." Trump, 78, was accused of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden and removing large quantities of top secret documents after leaving the White House, but the cases never came to trial. Smith also moved on Monday to drop his appeal of the dismissal of the documents case filed against the former president in Florida. That case was tossed out earlier this year by a Trump-appointed judge on the grounds that Smith was unlawfully appointed. The special counsel paused the election interference case and the documents case this month after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. Smith cited the long-standing Justice Department policy of not indicting or prosecuting a sitting president in his motions to have the cases dismissed. "The Government's position on the merits of the defendant's prosecution has not changed," Smith said in the filing with Chutkan. "But the circumstances have." "It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President," Smith said. "As a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated." In a separate filing, Smith said he was withdrawing his appeal of the dismissal of the classified documents case against Trump but pursuing the case against his two co-defendants, Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said the cases were "empty and lawless, and should never have been brought." "Over $100 Million Dollars of Taxpayer Dollars has been wasted in the Democrat Party's fight against their Political Opponent, ME," he said. "Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before." Trump was accused of conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding -- the session of Congress called to certify Biden's win, which was violently attacked on January 6, 2021 by a mob of the then-president's supporters. Trump was also accused of seeking to disenfranchise US voters with his false claims that he won the 2020 election. The former and incoming president also faces two state cases -- in New York and Georgia. He was convicted in New York in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election to stop her from revealing an alleged 2006 sexual encounter. However, Judge Juan Merchan has postponed sentencing while he considers a request from Trump's lawyers that the conviction be thrown out in light of the Supreme Court ruling in July that an ex-president has broad immunity from prosecution. In Georgia, Trump faces racketeering charges over his efforts to subvert the 2020 election results in the southern state, but that case will likely be frozen while he is in office. cl/smsTrump Nominates Pam Bondi For Attorney General After Matt Gaetz Withdraws

The newly crowned Miss Universe is facing backlash for a viral video showing her saying a racial slur. Victoria Kjær Theilvig, who won the Miss Universe pageant on Nov. 16, posted a video lip-syncing the lyrics of “Empire State of Mind” by Jay Z, which includes the N-word. She shot the video on top of the Empire State Building in New York. TikTok users subsequently called Theilvig out for lip-syncing the racial slur. Theilvig, who represented Denmark in the pageant, was praised by conservatives for her win. “Biological & objectively attractive women are allowed to win beauty pageants again,” Donald Trump Jr., the son of President-elect Donald Trump, wrote in a post on X . “WE ARE SO BACK!!!” ADVERTISEMENT As then-owner of Miss Universe, Don Jr.‘s father, Donald, Trump was responsible for allowing transgender women to compete in the pageant in 2012. Under new ownership in 2023, the requirements relaxed again. The age limit was eschewed and married women and mothers were allowed to compete in the pageant. A transgender woman, Marina Machete of Portugal, also placed in the top 20 for the first time. Miss Universe co-owner Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, a trans woman, said in a leaked video of a boardroom meeting last year that the pageant’s increased diversity was just a “communication strategy” and the women weren’t actually going to win. “The trans women, the women with husbands, divorced women... This is a communication strategy, because, you understand... they can compete but they cannot win,” Jakrajutatip said. “We just put the policy out there. Social inclusion, as people would say.” Jakrajutatip echoed a similar sentiment in a joint interview with Theilvig after her win. “Evolution? We have blond and blue eyes, so we’re coming to the ultimate evolution already,” she said. “We don’t need any more evolution here. We already got the best here.” Theilvig did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Initial Roll-Out Provides Benefits for CanPay and NuggMD Customers in Pennsylvania LITTLETON, Colo. , Dec. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Two leading cannabis technology companies announced a partnership that will make it easier for consumers to renew their medical cannabis recommendations in existing state-legal markets. The partnership is between CanPay , the largest legitimate payment network for cannabis retailers and consumers, and NuggMD, the largest telehealth platform for cannabis. Under the partnership, CanPay's consumer users who live in Pennsylvania will receive a 50% discount on medical cannabis recommendations when they renew using NuggMD's platform. The companies intend to soon apply it or a similar discount to patients in other states. This discount is the first offering in the CanPay Member Benefits program, which provides unique, exclusive discounts to CanPay users. In addition to the Member Benefits program, the payment network launched a rewards program in 2023 that allows users to win CanPay Points, which can be used to discount future purchases. To date, consumers have received more than $700,000 in CanPay Points. CanPay's easy-to-use app allows consumers to pay cannabis retailers with a simple debit from their checking account using the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. Merchants with a compliant bank account at a CanPay-approved financial institution may join the CanPay network quickly and easily. CanPay's payment solution is built for traditional retailers as well as emerging markets and businesses in highly regulated industries. "The CanPay network is both large enough and diverse enough that other leading companies are finding significant value in providing exclusive discounts to our customers. We're kicking off our Members Benefit program with NuggMD, which provides valuable services to medical marijuana patients across the U.S.," said Dustin Eide, CEO of CanPay. "We plan to continue to offer new and exciting benefits to our customers through unique partnerships with companies that they know and love." Through this partnership, CanPay consumers in Pennsylvania will receive a code via the CanPay app to enjoy a 50% discount when renewing their medical cards through NuggMD. The exclusive benefit is expected to run through the end of January 2025. "We are committed to making medical cannabis recommendations easy and simple to secure because we believe that most cannabis use is rooted in wellness. Our partnership with CanPay reflects that commitment," said Bobby Brock, vice president of marketing at NuggMD. CanPay is accepted by 10 of the top 13 public company, multi-state operators (MSOs). The app's proprietary Purchase Power tool creates custom spending limits, with a maximum daily customer spending limit of $5,000. That's the highest advertised spending limit in the cannabis industry—and significantly higher than the amount of cash that a customer can withdraw from an ATM at one time. About CanPay CanPay, founded in 2016, is the largest multi-retail and ecommerce pay-by-bank payments network, seamlessly facilitating transactions between consumers' bank accounts and retail businesses. CanPay's easy-to-use payment solution is geared for traditional retailers as well as emerging markets and businesses in highly regulated industries. The CanPay team, with over 30 years of payments industry experience, set out to develop the most stable, reliable payment solution across retail sectors – one that saves both consumers and retailers money compared to traditional payment options, which rely on credit card networks that charge significant fees. CanPay's Purchase Power algorithm minimizes fraud, protecting retailers and consumers. The company continues to build its proprietary network of financial institutions, specialized technology providers, consumers and retailers – with the aim of making payments everywhere safe, simple, low-cost, transparent and even more rewarding.
