While the nation mourned former president Jimmy Carter after his death on Sunday, many had spent time reflecting on his legacy over the months since he entered hospice care in February 2023. In Central Illinois and beyond, the 100-year-old former peanut farmer was remembered as much for his personal likability and humanitarian work as for his tumultuous single term as the 39th president. Here's how some say he will be remembered. Work with Habitat for Humanity Carter first became involved in Habitat for Humanity in 1984, when he and wife Rosalynn worked with their local Habitat organization in Americus, Georgia, according to information from the national Habitat organization. The couple traveled across the globe working on habitat projects, working alongside more than 100,000 volunteers on 4,390 homes in 14 countries. “We may be able to count the number of Carter work projects and the number of families served by those builds, but we cannot truly quantify the immense impact the Carters have had on Habitat homeowners, staff, volunteers and donors. We will continue to honor President Carter’s legacy through our service to our community,” said Tyler Wiggs, Habitat McLean County’s office manager, in a press release. Carter's legacy will live on, in part through the work done by Habitat organizations across the country, said Jolene Aldus, now executive director for Habitat for Humanity of McLean County. "There's no doubt that President Carter was well liked and loved by many Americans," said Aldus, who was the organization's director of development at the time of the interview in 2023. Carter's influence also helps local Habitat organizations gain a foothold in smaller communities, she said. Popularity increased post-presidency Carter is often known as a more popular former president than he was a president, two Illinois State University political science professors said. "He more or less invented the modern sense of the post-presidency," said Professor Lane Crothers . That includes Carter's work in the 1990s with the Carter Center in monitoring elections during a period of new democracies emerging during decolonization. Since the 1990s, a lot of the public focus on Carter has shifted to his personal journey as the longest-lived former president, Crothers said. Carter's presidency was difficult for situations outside of his control, Crothers said. Carter inherited a period of high inflation and unemployment and his presidency saw foreign events like the Iranian Revolution and energy crisis. The Democratic Party was also splitting, with Carter being the last Democrat to sweep the Southern states. Any president, even a perfect one, would have found that those situations challenging, Crothers said. Yet Carter was also seen as indecisive and uncomfortable with the "wheeling and dealing" of politics. Still, Carter left behind some strong legacies from his presidency, said Associate Professor Kerri Milita . She pointed to examples like the beginning of the handover of the Panama Canal and the Camp David Accords. These help return the U.S. to a role as a international diplomatic broker. "He really impacted the international role of the U.S. going forward," Milita said. Carter was also the first president to be elected using public funding under the model created in 1974. His campaign reflected who he was as a person, Milita said, something that carried through his presidency. "Carter was one and the same, the president was the man," she said. His campaign as a whole was unlike a lot of others in that Carter did not shy away from making his positions known, Milita said. Ambiguity can be an asset ahead of elections because it makes the candidate's positions harder to attack. "Carter went against the grain on that, and a lot his rhetoric was very clear," she said. While he lost his reelection bid in a landslide to Illinois-born, Eureka College graduate Ronald Reagan, Carter's post presidency has put him in the good graces of many in the state and beyond. German security and intelligence chiefs are due on Monday to face questioning about the car-ramming attack that killed five people and wounded more than 200 at a Christmas market 10 days ago. They will be quizzed about possible missed clues and security failures before the December 20 attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg, where police arrested the 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen at the scene. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, Saxony-Anhalt state officials, and the heads of Germany’s domestic and foreign intelligence services are expected to face a closed-door committee hearing in parliament from 1200 GMT. Abdulmohsen is the only suspect in the attack in which a rented BMW sport utility vehicle ploughed through the crowd of revellers at high speed, leaving a trail of bloody carnage. Investigators have yet to declare a suspected motive in the assault that used a motor vehicle as a weapon, which recalled past jihadist attacks, including in Berlin and in the French city of Nice in 2016. Abdulmohsen, by contrast, has voiced strongly anti-Islam views, sympathies with the far right, and anger at Germany for allowing in too many Muslim war refugees and other asylum-seekers. According to unconfirmed media reports citing unnamed German security sources, he has in the past been treated for mental illness and tested positive for drug use on the night of his arrest. The Saudi suspect has been remanded in custody in a top-security facility on five counts of murder and 205 counts of attempted murder, prosecutors said, but not so far on terrorism-related charges. We got in touch with Dr Swapnil Kapote, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Jupiter Hospital, Thane, who explains the challenges cancer survivors face that may help you understand their situation better. 1. Physical Side Effects Cancer treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, can leave physical effects that may vary from person to person. - Fatigue: “One of the most common complaints I hear from survivors is fatigue,” says Dr Kapote. “It’s not just about feeling tired; it’s a pervasive exhaustion that can last months or even years after treatment.” He recommends a combination of gentle exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate rest to help combat this issue. - Pain: Chronic pain, often stemming from surgery, nerve damage, or radiation, can be debilitating. Dr Kapote stresses the importance of pain management programs, which may include medications, physical therapy, or alternative therapies like acupuncture. - Lymphedema: Swelling, particularly in the arms or legs, may occur following lymph node removal. “Patients should work closely with their care team to manage this condition through compression garments, exercises, or specialized therapy,” he advises. - Hormonal Changes: Treatments affecting the endocrine system can cause weight fluctuations, hot flashes, or sexual dysfunction. “These changes can impact quality of life significantly, and addressing them often requires a multidisciplinary approach,” Dr Kapote adds. - Organ Function: Heart, lung, kidney, or liver function can be affected by cancer therapies. Survivors require ongoing monitoring to identify and manage any complications early. 2. Psychological and Emotional Challenges The emotional impact of surviving cancer is profound. - Anxiety and "Scanxiety": Survivors often experience anxiety during follow-ups or scans, fearing a recurrence. “Psychological counselling and mindfulness practices can help mitigate these fears,” says Dr Kapote. - Depression: Adapting to life post-treatment can lead to depression, particularly if survivors grapple with physical changes or the emotional toll of their journey. Seeking professional mental health support is crucial. - Cognitive Issues: Many survivors report “chemo brain,” a term describing difficulties with memory, focus, and mental clarity. Dr Kapote shares cognitive rehabilitation programs as effective tools for recovery. 3. Social and Relationship Dynamics Cancer often redefines personal and professional relationships. - Survivors may feel isolated as loved ones struggle to understand their post-treatment challenges. “Open communication with family and friends is key,” says Dr Kapote. - Changes in family roles can create stress, especially for those who were primary caregivers or breadwinners. - Returning to work can be tough due to fatigue or cognitive difficulties. “Employers must provide support and accommodations to ease this transition,” he said. 4. Financial Stress Cancer’s financial toll persists long after treatment. - Ongoing medical expenses for follow-ups, medications, and side effect management can strain budgets. - Lost income during treatment exacerbates financial stress. “Survivors should explore financial assistance programs and consult with insurance advisors for support,” Dr Kapote suggests. 5. Long-Term Health Monitoring Regular follow-ups are critical to detect recurrences or secondary cancers early. - Survivors are also at increased risk for long-term health conditions like cardiovascular disease or osteoporosis due to treatment side effects. - Dr Kapote recommends creating a survivorship care plan that includes routine screenings, lifestyle changes, and access to supportive resources. 6. Adapting to a New Normal The post-treatment phase is about redefining life’s priorities and embracing new routines. - “Rehabilitation programs, counselling, and support groups can help survivors navigate this transition,” Dr Kapote explains. - Holistic practices like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness can also promote mental and physical well-being. Expert Advice for Survivors Dr Kapote encourages survivors to prioritize their health and seek support whenever needed. “Survivorship is a journey that demands patience and perseverance.
