The “citizens” of the Province of Malagentia — the local chapter of a national group of historical hobbyists and reenactors — hold regular meetups to fence and explore all facets of life in the Middle Ages. For many, the draw is more than the period-accurate garb or the thrill of beating their enemies in battle. “I like the sword fighting, but it’s the friends you meet along the way — it really is. It’s a really good community,” said a Waterboro-based participant who goes by the name Camille Des Jardins. “We didn’t fit in other places, and we fit here.” Greg Tremblay, of Boston, agreed. “(It’s) community — 100%,” said Tremblay, who plays under the name Gavin Kent. Malagentia is the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA, a group founded in 1966 with a focus on learning about and recreating the Middle Ages and Renaissance eras in the modern age. Most members have their own niche interests in the group, from traditional fencing practices to the Dutch masters of art. “Our goal is to educate people and encourage the exploration of things within that life. How did people cook? How did they dress? How did they make their swords?” said Collette d’Avingnon (her SCA name), of Biddeford. In addition to fencing and weaponry, players can take up activities like medieval dance, painting, cooking, woodworking, calligraphy and more. Des Jardins has the role of fencing instructor in the group. An SCA member for about 25 years, she dons a purple Elizabethan period-inspired outfit and armor. “I started fencing in college, and fencing is kind of the gateway for a lot of people,” Des Jardins said. “For years, I did nothing but fence, then I realized there’s other things. For Schmaling, SCA is a family affair. “My daughter has been doing this since she was 2 days old,” said Schmaling, who has been role-playing for about 25 years. Eli Parsons, of Portland, is a newcomer in the group. Parsons said he was hooked as soon as someone handed him a sword. “After COVID, I was looking for some kind of social club, something to get out and go do something,” Parsons said. “I happened to hear there was a sword fighting practice going on every Tuesday and I was like, ‘Let me check it out.’” Whether you’ve been in the organization for two decades or two days, SCA aims to be welcoming to all. “One thing that we really pride ourselves in is being accepting of people, so this is a place where anybody, it doesn’t matter where you come from, what you do ... we want you to come here and play and explore and feel safe doing so,” D’Avingnon said. With a focus on human rights, US policy toward Latin America under Jimmy Carter briefly tempered a long tradition of interventionism in a key sphere of American influence, analysts say. Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100, defied the furor of US conservatives to negotiate the handover of the Panama Canal to Panamanian control, suspended aid to multiple authoritarian governments in the region, and even attempted to normalize relations with Cuba. Carter’s resolve to chart a course toward democracy and diplomacy, however, was severely tested in Central America and Cuba, where he was forced to balance his human rights priorities with pressure from adversaries to combat the spread of communism amid the Cold War standoff with the Soviet Union. “Latin America was fundamental and his global policy was oriented toward human rights, democratic values and multilateral cooperation,” political analyst Michael Shifter of the Inter-American Dialogue, a think tank in Washington, told AFP. During his 1977-1981 administration, which was sandwiched between the Republican presidencies of Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, the Democrat sought to take a step back from US alignment with right-wing dictatorships in Latin America. – Panama Canal – An important symbol of Carter’s approach was the signing of two treaties in 1977 to officially turn over the Panama Canal in 1999. “Jimmy Carter understood that if he did not return the canal to Panama, the relationship between the United States and Panama could lead to a new crisis in a country where Washington could not afford the luxury of instability,” said Luis Guillermo Solis, a political scientist and former president of Costa Rica. Carter called the decision, which was wildly unpopular back home, “the most difficult political challenge I ever had,” as he accepted Panama’s highest honor in 2016. He also hailed the move as “a notable achievement of moving toward democracy and freedom.” During his term, Carter opted not to support Nicaraguan strongman Anastasio Somoza, who was subsequently overthrown by the leftist Sandinista Front in 1979. But in El Salvador, the American president had to “make a very uncomfortable pact with the government,” said Shifter. To prevent communists from taking power, Carter resumed US military assistance for a junta which then became more radical, engaging in civilian massacres and plunging El Salvador into a long civil war. Carter took a critical approach to South American dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, suspending arms deliveries and imposing sanctions in some cases. But his efforts “did not achieve any progress in terms of democratization,” said Argentine political scientist Rosendo Fraga. – ‘Let’s go to the ball game’ – The American president also tried to normalize relations with Cuba 15 years after the missile crisis. He relaxed sanctions that had been in force since 1962, supported secret talks and enabled limited diplomatic representation in both countries. “With him, for the first time, the possibility of dialogue rather than confrontation as a framework for political relations opened up,” Jesus Arboleya, a former Cuban diplomat, told AFP. But in 1980, a mass exodus of 125,000 Cubans to the United States, with Fidel Castro’s blessing, created an unexpected crisis. It “hurt Carter politically with the swarm of unexpected immigrants,” said Jennifer McCoy, a professor of political science at Georgia State University. Castro continued to support Soviet-backed African governments and even deployed troops against Washington’s wishes, finally putting an end to the normalization process. However, more than 20 years later, Carter made a historic visit to Havana as ex-president, at the time becoming the highest-profile American politician to set foot on Cuban soil since 1959. During the 2002 visit, “he made a bold call for the US to lift its embargo, but he also called on Castro to embrace democratic opening,” said McCoy, who was part of the US delegation for the trip, during which Castro encouraged Carter to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Cuban All-Star baseball game. “Castro was sitting in the front row and we were afraid he would rise to give a long rebuttal to Carter’s speech. But he didn’t. He just said, ‘Let’s go to the ball game.'” In the years following Carter’s presidency, Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) would go on to resume a full-frontal confrontation with Cuba. Decades later, Barack Obama (2009-2017) opened a new phase of measured normalization, which Donald Trump (2017-2021) brought to an end. The Italian explained: “We can only talk about a ‘clanger’ if you get off your line and miss the ball or when you let a long-ranger squeeze through your hands and when you drop an easy shot. “But his are positional mistakes. For the corner, he should have stood a bit further forward. “He may have underestimated the trajectory of the ball because it’s unlikely to put the ball where Cunha has from that position. “And for Gibbs-White, he saw that he was getting his shot away and therefore anticipated the movement and when he saw the ball it was too late. “This normally would not have been picked on if he had played ten to 15 great games. But given he’s under heavy scrutiny, mistakes like this are magnified.” Onana, 28, often alternates worldie saves with his bloopers. Taibi warned: “Pulling off a miraculous save is easier than making a routine one as it’s you who makes it look easy when you collect the ball. "But for miraculous ones, if you succeed you’re a genius and if you don’t it’s not your fault anyway. “Keepers sometimes underestimate the so-called ‘easy’ ones. So they felt comfortable parting ways with their head coach knowing they had personnel moves to make. And apparently, Thursday's loss to the Detroit Pistons was the final straw. The “citizens” of the Province of Malagentia — the local chapter of a national group of historical hobbyists and reenactors — hold regular meetups to fence and explore all facets of life in the Middle Ages. For many, the draw is more than the period-accurate garb or the thrill of beating their enemies in battle. “I like the sword fighting, but it’s the friends you meet along the way — it really is. It’s a really good community,” said a Waterboro-based participant who goes by the name Camille Des Jardins. “We didn’t fit in other places, and we fit here.” Greg Tremblay, of Boston, agreed. “(It’s) community — 100%,” said Tremblay, who plays under the name Gavin Kent. Malagentia is the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA, a group founded in 1966 with a focus on learning about and recreating the Middle Ages and Renaissance eras in the modern age. Most members have their own niche interests in the group, from traditional fencing practices to the Dutch masters of art. “Our goal is to educate people and encourage the exploration of things within that life. How did people cook? How did they dress? How did they make their swords?” said Collette d’Avingnon (her SCA name), of Biddeford. While recounting his final days at The New York Times – he resigned amid controversy in 2020 over an op-ed by Republican Senator Tom Cotton – he also discussed what economists call demand- and supply-side factors behind the rise of media bias. Demand-driven bias happens when newspapers offer slanted news to appeal to readers. Supply-driven bias stems from the ideological leanings of owners or employees. Bennet indicated that both had influenced decision-making at The New York Times. To be fair, not everyone agreed with Bennet’s diagnosis – not least the current leadership at The New York Times. But people across the political spectrum tend to agree that media bias is a problem, and not just at the Times. I wanted to understand which cause of bias mattered more: supply or demand. So I did an experiment. Why I ‘read’ 100,000 articles As an economist who specializes in the economics of digitization, I’ve long been captivated by how new technology empowers editors with unprecedented control. For example, in the old days, it was nearly impossible for newspapers to update their “front pages” after they had been laid out; if you wanted to make a change, you needed to literally stop the presses. But the rise of digital platforms lets editors make updates on a minute-by-minute basis. That helps certain stories remain in the spotlight, subtly guiding public discourse. So, together with my colleague Koleman Strumpf at Wake Forest University, I looked at how this plays out in two of America’s leading newspapers: The New York Times, which people commonly believe leans left, and The Wall Street Journal, which is often viewed as leaning right. We analyzed more than 100,000 articles from both newspapers, as well as 22 million tweets linking to them, to tease out the factors that influence how long articles remain on digital homepages. By controlling for demand-side preferences – as measured by the number of times each story was shared on Twitter, which we used as a proxy for reader interest – we found that supply-side biases were a big factor behind articles being kept on a homepage. In other words, newspapers kept stories prominently placed based on their own political preferences rather than because people were reading it. Two examples from The New York Times Using a machine learning approach, we assigned political scores to each article, with the most Republican-leaning articles scored as “zero” and the most Democratic leaning as “one.” We found that both tweet counts and a publication’s ideological leanings affect how long a given article is kept on the homepage. To illustrate, consider two stories from The New York Times. The first, “For Many Who Marched, Jan. 6 Was Only the Beginning,” published on Jan. 23, 2022, had a clear liberal-leaning tone, describing the event as the “worst attack on American democracy,” garnering it a “pro-Democrat” score of 0.93. The article was published at 3 a.m., featured on the homepage by 6 a.m., garnered around 200 tweet shares by noon, and stayed on the homepage for more than two days. Contrast this with the second article, “At Least 46 Migrants Found Dead in Tractor-Trailer in San Antonio,” published on June 27, 2022. This piece had a more conservative-leaning tone, highlighting Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s criticisms of President Joe Biden. The story, which got a “pro-Democrat” score of just 0.22, was published at 9 p.m., immediately featured on the homepage, and received more than 600 tweet shares within two hours. However, despite its strong engagement, it was removed from the homepage within the next hour. Media bias as a larger phenomenon Of course, unrelated issues like competition from breaking news could have affected how those two articles were placed. But they weren’t isolated cases. We found that on the whole, articles aligning with the political leanings of their respective newspapers – liberal for The New York Times and conservative for The Wall Street Journal – tend to remain on the homepage longer, even after accounting for their popularity. This is clear evidence of supply-driven media bias. Editorial choices aren’t just a response to reader demand; they reflect a publication’s ideological leanings. This influences which stories get highlighted, and which narratives dominate public discourse. (The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal did not respond to requests for comment as of publication time.) Determining whether media bias is caused by supply or demand issues isn’t just an academic game. It has profound real-world implications. Most important, it can help the public understand how competition in the media industry affects bias. If bias is mostly about publications responding to demand, more competition could actually make the problem worse, as outlets vie to cater to the specific preferences of their audiences. On the other hand, if bias is largely supply-driven, competition could be a corrective. That’s because in a competitive market, media outlets have incentives to appeal to the broadest possible audience, which means bias is bad for business. The recent waves of consolidation in the media industry, coupled with the noticeable rise in perceptions of media bias over the past decade, seems to support the supply-side argument. As fewer companies control more of the media landscape, outlets have less of an incentive to maintain a broad, unbiased approach.
