BROOKLYN, N.Y. — As Jamahl Mosley has continued to adjust Orlando ‘s lineups in the absence of Paolo Banchero , the Magic coach has seemingly found one that thrives on both ends of the court. It’s who the Magic have started the last two games, including Friday night against the Nets at Barclays Center: Jalen Suggs, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Franz Wagner, Wendell Carter Jr. and Goga Bitadze. It’s also a group that wasn’t possible to put on the floor when Carter missed 12 games in a row due to left foot plantar fasciitis. But until Banchero (torn right abdominal muscle) returns to the court, it’s a lineup that allows the Magic to spread the floor on offense, attack the paint and impose their will on defense. “It’s kind of hard to score on that,” said Caldwell-Pope said of Orlando’s newest starting lineup after the Magic’s fifth win in a row and their 11th in the past 12 games Friday. At 6-foot-5, he and Suggs are technically the shortest players amongst the lengthy group that includes the 6-10 Wagner, 6-10 Carter and 6-11 Bitadze. “When you’ve got me, Suggs, [and] Franz guarding the wings, and then if you get past us, you’ve got two big guys down there,” Caldwell-Pope said. He described Carter and Bitadze as shot-blockers who can also change a lot of shots and clean up the glass for Orlando (14-7). “They’re getting rebounds for us and that’s when we get out and push in transition; what we’re starting to get better at,” the veteran guard said of Orlando’s two big men. And Caldwell-Pope is right. The lineup of Suggs, Caldwell-Pope, Wagner, Carter and Bitadze has allowed zero offensive boards to opponents in the two games they’ve played together, according to NBA.com . As an entire team, the Magic outrebounded the Nets 40-35, which included an 11-5 advantage on offensive boards. They added 13 blocks (5 of which came from Bitadze) and 13 steals. By the end of the night, Orlando had scored 34 points of 20 Brooklyn turnovers. Beede’s Breakdown: How Magic’s 3s powered NBA Cup win at Nets “It’s working,” Bitadze told reporters in the locker room about playing alongside Carter. “We’re locking it up. Teams are really struggling to score against us, so I guess we are playing good defense.” The advanced numbers back up his claim. Among the six Magic lineups that have played at least 29 minutes together, the quintet of Suggs, Caldwell-Pope, Wagner, Carter and Bitadze has a team-best net-rating at plus-48.3, according to NBA.com. That’s thanks to not only a solid 98.3 defensive rating but also an impressive 146.6 offensive rating. While still a small sample size, it’s noteworthy for a new starting lineup from the Magic. “I’m sure it’s an adjustment for them two as well, but I feel like they’re doing a great job,” Wagner said of the Carter-Bitadze duo. “Obviously, it requires a little bit of communication [with] guys playing out of their position, especially Wendell. “But I feel like Wendell’s doing a great job of finding his way back into things,” he added. As Bitadze has found success in the paint on offense, it’s been Carter who helps out on the perimeter on offense. They’re also both capable passers, with Carter dishing out 4 assists vs. Brooklyn and Bitadze 3. Although he only made his lone 3-point attempt vs. Brooklyn, Carter’s presence alone impacts Caldwell-Pope, Suggs and Wagner, a trio that shot 9 of 17 (53%) from distance on Friday. “I haven’t been shooting it well, so he can spread the floor and we crash the glass and dominate the glass inside with me and him, too,” Bitadze said about playing alongside Carter. “Defensively as well, we’re a force, so it’s easy.” Added Carter about the duo after practice Saturday: “It’s not really an adjustment. We’re both defensive-minded players and we take a lot of pride on the defensive end. Playing with Goga, if anything it makes a lot easier on that end.” But the Magic aren’t satisfied. They know the work continues through the long haul after just a quarter of the way through the season and entering a Sunday afternoon re-match against the Nets (9-11). Gary Harris (left hamstring strain) will miss his third consecutive contest against Brooklyn. “We can do even better than this,” Bitadze said. “We always expect the best and not let other teams score at all. We would love that — not to let them score. But it’s been working well.” The Magic also understand and appreciate the job done by Mosley since Banchero went down Oct. 30 at Chicago. Orlando has gone 11-5 in the time Banchero has missed. “Shoutout to Mosley for keeping us together,” Bitadze said of his coach. “To really focus on defense is hard in this league, and that’s what we’ve done. We’re winning games; we’re trusting our defense. So it’s working well. “We’ve got to keep trusting.” Jason Beede can be reached at jbeede@orlandosentinel.com Up next ... The Inner Circle acknowledges, Rene Bendana as an Inner Circle LifetimeGREEN LAKE, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin man who faked his own drowning this summer and left his wife and three children has been located in Eastern Europe and is communicating with law enforcement, but he has not committed to returning home, authorities said. Ryan Borgwardt began communicating with authorities Nov. 11, after they tracked him down, Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said Thursday. The sheriff showed a video that Borgwardt sent police that day from an undisclosed location. The sheriff said no charges have been filed and that he doesn't think they will be necessary while authorities “keep pulling at his heartstrings” to come home. Here are some things to know about Borgwardt and his disappearance: Borgwardt, who is in his mid-40s, lived with his wife and children in Watertown, a city of about 23,000 people northwest of Milwaukee that is known for its German heritage, parochial schools and two dams on the Rock River. The sheriff has said his department was told Aug. 12 that Borgwardt had not been heard from since the previous day, when he traveled about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from home to Green Lake to go kayaking. Borgwardt’s wife said he texted her at 10:49 p.m. to say he was heading to shore. Deputies found Borgwardt’s vehicle and trailer near Green Lake. His kayak was discovered on the lake, overturned and with a life jacket attached to it, in an area where the water is about 200 feet (60 meters) deep. An angler later found Borgwardt’s fishing rod. The search for his body continued for more than 50 days, with divers scouring the lake on several occasions. Clues — including that he reported his passport lost or stolen and obtained a new one a few months before he disappeared — led investigators to speculate that he made it appear that he had drowned to go meet a woman he had been communicating with in the Central Asian country of Uzbekistan. Podoll declined to comment when asked what he knew about the woman, but he said law enforcement contacted Borgwardt “through a female that spoke Russian.” His identity was confirmed through asking him questions that the sheriff said only Borgwardt would know and by a video he made and sent them Nov. 11. He has spoken with someone from the sheriff's department almost daily since. However Podoll said Thursday that Borgwardt's exact location in Eastern Europe was not known. Podoll said Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk has been the one communicating with Borgwardt and their conversations have all taken place via email. Vande Kolk told The Associated Press in an email Friday that authorities are trying to determine Borgwardt's exact location. But that might not be easy even with modern surveillance technology. Scott Shackelford, executive director of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research at Indiana University, said authorities should be able to locate Borgwardt through his device's internet protocol address, a unique number assigned to every device connected to the internet. But he said it's very easy to mask an IP address and make it appear as if the device is in one country when it's really in another. Software exists that can route your IP address across the globe, Shackelford said. Police may not have the expertise, the manpower or any interest in digging through multiple layers of cyber deception, he said. Wearing an orange T-shirt, Borgwardt, unsmiling, looks directly at the camera, apparently filmed on a cellphone. Borgwardt says he is in his apartment and briefly pans the camera, but mostly shows a door and bare walls. “I’m safe and secure, no problem,” he says. Borgwardt has told authorities he overturned his kayak on the lake, dumped his phone in it and paddled an inflatable boat to shore. He told authorities he chose Green Lake because it is Wisconsin's deepest at 237 feet (over 72 meters). He then rode an electric bike stashed by a boat launch about 70 miles (110 kilometers) through the night to Madison, the sheriff said. From there, by Borgwardt's account, he traveled by bus to Detroit and then Canada, where he boarded a plane. Police are still verifying Borgwardt’s description of what happened, Podoll said. Borgwardt faked his death and fled because of “personal matters,” thinking it was the right thing to do, the sheriff said. Investigators found that he took out a $375,000 life insurance policy in January for his family. “He was just going to try and make things better in his mind, and this was the way it was going to be,” Podoll said. Borgwardt has not yet decided to return home, and if he does it will be of his own free will, according to Podoll. Deputies are stressing to him the importance of returning home and cleaning up the mess he made. The sheriff suggested that Borgwardt could be charged with obstructing the investigation into his disappearance, but so far no counts have been filed. The search for Borgwardt, which lasted more than a month, is said to have cost at least $35,000. Borgwardt told authorities that he did not expect the search to last more than two weeks, Podoll said, and his biggest concern is how the community will react to him if he returns. HIV: there’s hope for a cure - where we stand nowBy JILL COLVIN and STEPHEN GROVES WASHINGTON (AP) — After several weeks working mostly behind closed doors, Vice President-elect JD Vance returned to Capitol Hill this week in a new, more visible role: Helping Donald Trump try to get his most contentious Cabinet picks to confirmation in the Senate, where Vance has served for the last two years. Vance arrived at the Capitol on Wednesday with former Rep. Matt Gaetz and spent the morning sitting in on meetings between Trump’s choice for attorney general and key Republicans, including members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The effort was for naught: Gaetz announced a day later that he was withdrawing his name amid scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations and the reality that he was unlikely to be confirmed. Thursday morning Vance was back, this time accompanying Pete Hegseth, the “Fox & Friends Weekend” host whom Trump has tapped to be the next secretary of defense. Hegseth also has faced allegations of sexual assault that he denies. Vance is expected to accompany other nominees for meetings in coming weeks as he tries to leverage the two years he has spent in the Senate to help push through Trump’s picks. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) The role of introducing nominees around Capitol Hill is an unusual one for a vice president-elect. Usually the job goes to a former senator who has close relationships on the Hill, or a more junior aide. But this time the role fits Vance, said Marc Short, who served as Trump’s first director of legislative affairs as well as chief of staff to Trump’s first vice president, Mike Pence, who spent more than a decade in Congress and led the former president’s transition ahead of his first term. ”JD probably has a lot of current allies in the Senate and so it makes sense to have him utilized in that capacity,” Short said. Unlike the first Trump transition, which played out before cameras at Trump Tower in New York and at the president-elect’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, this one has largely happened behind closed doors in Palm Beach, Florida. There, a small group of officials and aides meet daily at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to run through possible contenders and interview job candidates. The group includes Elon Musk, the billionaire who has spent so much time at the club that Trump has joked he can’t get rid of him. Vance has been a constant presence, even as he’s kept a lower profile. The Ohio senator has spent much of the last two weeks in Palm Beach, according to people familiar with his plans, playing an active role in the transition, on which he serves as honorary chair. Vance has been staying at a cottage on the property of the gilded club, where rooms are adorned with cherubs, oriental rugs and intricate golden inlays. It’s a world away from the famously hardscrabble upbringing that Vance documented in the memoir that made him famous, “Hillbilly Elegy.” His young children have also joined him at Mar-a-Lago, at times. Vance was photographed in shorts and a polo shirt playing with his kids on the seawall of the property with a large palm frond, a U.S. Secret Service robotic security dog in the distance. Related Articles On the rare days when he is not in Palm Beach, Vance has been joining the sessions remotely via Zoom. Though he has taken a break from TV interviews after months of constant appearances, Vance has been active in the meetings, which began immediately after the election and include interviews and as well as presentations on candidates’ pluses and minuses. Among those interviewed: Contenders to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray , as Vance wrote in a since-deleted social media post. Defending himself from criticism that he’d missed a Senate vote in which one of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees was confirmed, Vance wrote that he was meeting at the time “with President Trump to interview multiple positions for our government, including for FBI Director.” “I tend to think it’s more important to get an FBI director who will dismantle the deep state than it is for Republicans to lose a vote 49-46 rather than 49-45,” Vance added on X. “But that’s just me.” While Vance did not come in to the transition with a list of people he wanted to see in specific roles, he and his friend, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who is also a member of the transition team, were eager to see former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. find roles in the administration. Trump ended up selecting Gabbard as the next director of national intelligence , a powerful position that sits atop the nation’s spy agencies and acts as the president’s top intelligence adviser. And he chose Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services , a massive agency that oversees everything from drug and food safety to Medicare and Medicaid. Vance was also a big booster of Tom Homan, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who will serve as Trump’s “border czar.” In another sign of Vance’s influence, James Braid, a top aide to the senator, is expected to serve as Trump’s legislative affairs director. Allies say it’s too early to discuss what portfolio Vance might take on in the White House. While he gravitates to issues like trade, immigration and tech policy, Vance sees his role as doing whatever Trump needs. Vance was spotted days after the election giving his son’s Boy Scout troop a tour of the Capitol and was there the day of leadership elections. He returned in earnest this week, first with Gaetz — arguably Trump’s most divisive pick — and then Hegseth, who has was been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2017, according to an investigative report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing. Vance hosted Hegseth in his Senate office as GOP senators, including those who sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee, filtered in to meet with the nominee for defense secretary. While a president’s nominees usually visit individual senators’ offices, meeting them on their own turf, the freshman senator — who is accompanied everywhere by a large Secret Service detail that makes moving around more unwieldy — instead brought Gaetz to a room in the Capitol on Wednesday and Hegseth to his office on Thursday. Senators came to them. Vance made it to votes Wednesday and Thursday, but missed others on Thursday afternoon. Vance is expected to continue to leverage his relationships in the Senate after Trump takes office. But many Republicans there have longer relationships with Trump himself. Sen. Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican, said that Trump was often the first person to call him back when he was trying to reach high-level White House officials during Trump’s first term. “He has the most active Rolodex of just about anybody I’ve ever known,” Cramer said, adding that Vance would make a good addition. “They’ll divide names up by who has the most persuasion here,” Cramer said, but added, “Whoever his liaison is will not work as hard at it as he will.” Cramer was complimentary of the Ohio senator, saying he was “pleasant” and ” interesting” to be around. ′′He doesn’t have the long relationships,” he said. “But we all like people that have done what we’ve done. I mean, that’s sort of a natural kinship, just probably not as personally tied.” Under the Constitution, Vance will also have a role presiding over the Senate and breaking tie votes. But he’s not likely to be needed for that as often as was Kamala Harris, who broke a record number of ties for Democrats as vice president, since Republicans will have a bigger cushion in the chamber next year. Colvin reported from New York. Associated Press writer Mary Clare Jalonick contributed to this report.

SOURCE Amber GroupCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Dominic Zvada kicked a 21-yard field goal with 45 seconds left and Michigan stunned No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday, likely ending the Buckeyes ’ hopes of returning to the Big Ten title game. Kalel Mullings broke away for a 27-yard run, setting up the Wolverines (7-5, 5-4) at Ohio State's 17-yard line with two minutes remaining in the game. The drive stalled at the 3, and Zvada came on for the chip shot. Ohio State (10-2, 7-2, No. 2 CFP) got the ball back but couldn't move it, with Will Howard throwing incomplete on fourth down to seal the Wolverines' fourth straight win over their bitter rival. “You come to Michigan to play this game,” Zvada said. “So, it's the biggest one of the year. It's the one that everyone looks forward to, and to be able to come in here and take the win, it's amazing.” This Ohio State loss in the “The Game” might have been the toughest of the past four because Michigan was unranked and wrapping up a disappointing season. The Wolverines were also playing without a couple of top players: tight end Colston Loveland and cornerback Will Johnson. The Buckeyes were favored by 21 points, the widest point spread for this rivalry since 1978, according to ESPN Stats and Info. Records — and point spreads, for that matter — rarely mean much when these two teams meet. “Our defense played outstanding," Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said. "We held a high-powered offense to 10 points, 77 rushing yards.” The Buckeyes were off all afternoon. Howard was 19 for 33 for 175 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and Jayden Fielding missed two field-goal attempts. The run game was hardly there. “It's hard, man,” an emotional Howard said. “I really don’t have much right now. I do know we're a two-loss team. We're going to get into the playoffs and make a run. But, I mean, this one hurts.” Mullings was Michigan's primary weapon. He rushed for 116 yards and the Wolverines only touchdown of the game in the first half as neither team could get much going offensively on the frigid afternoon. “They made plays, we made plays, so as the game wore on you could definitely, slowly feel them starting to lose confidence, lose that energy and lose that faith,” Mullings said. Howard was clunky all day. In the first half he threw an interception from deep in his own territory that led to Michigan's touchdown. He went out for a play in the second quarter to be checked for a head injury. After the game, he said he was fine. “We're very disappointed, and never thought this would happen right here,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “We expected to win this game and go play in the Big Ten championship game.” After the game, Michigan players attempted to plant their flag at midfield and were confronted by Ohio State players. A skirmish ensued as both teams pushed and shoved before being separated. Michigan: Did just enough and caught Ohio State on an off day. Ohio State: It's inexplicable how badly the Buckeyes played in their biggest game of the season. They would need No. 4 Penn State and No. 10 Indiana to lose later Saturday in order to make it into the Big Ten title game next week. There has been talk all season about how many of the Ohio State team leaders, including receiver Emeka Egbuka, running back TreVeyon Henderson and defensive end Jack Sawyer, chose to return for another year instead of entering the NFL draft because they wanted to beat Michigan at least once. Those players were inconsolable after the game. One of them, linebacker Cody Simon, was asked how he felt. “I just can't speak that right now,” Simon said. “I feel like we let the whole Buckeye nation down.” Michigan will wait for a minor bowl game. Ohio State, assuming either Penn State or Indiana wins on Saturday, will see how the final College Football Playoff rankings shakeout on Dec. 8. An analyst looks ahead to how the US economy might fare under Trump WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump won a return to the White House in part by promising big changes in economic policy — more tax cuts, huge tariffs on imports, mass deportations of immigrants working in the United States illegally. In some ways, his victory marked a repudiation of President Joe Biden’s economic stewardship and a protest against inflation. It came despite low unemployment and steady growth under the Biden administration. What lies ahead for the economy under Trump? Paul Ashworth of Capital Economics spoke recently to The Associated Press. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. American consumers feeling less confident in December, Conference Board says American consumers are feeling less confident in December, a business research group says. The Conference Board said Monday that its consumer confidence index fell back in December to 104.7 from 112.8 in November. Consumers had been feeling increasingly confident in recent months. The consumer confidence index measures both Americans’ assessment of current economic conditions and their outlook for the next six months. The measure of Americans’ short-term expectations for income, business and the job market tumbled more than a dozen points to 81.1. The Conference Board says a reading under 80 can signal a potential recession in the near future. The internet is rife with fake reviews. Will AI make it worse? Researchers and watchdog groups say the emergence of generative artificial intelligence tools that allow people to efficiently produce detailed and novel online reviews has put merchants, service providers and consumers in uncharted territory. Phony reviews have long plagued many popular consumer websites, such as Amazon and Yelp. But AI-infused text generation tools enable fraudsters to produce reviews faster and in greater volume, according to tech industry experts. The deceptive practice is illegal in the U.S. and becomes a bigger problem for consumers during the holiday shopping season, when many people rely on reviews to buy gifts. A tech company and watchdog group that uses software to detect fake reviews says AI-generated reviews have multiplied. Stock market today: Honda-Nissan merger talks shake up otherwise quiet morning on Wall Street NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks edged lower in morning trading on Wall Street at the start of a holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% Monday. Several big technology companies helped cushion the widespread losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 308 points, or 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite was mostly unchanged. Eli Lilly rose after announcing that regulators approved Zepbound as the first and only prescription medicine for adults with sleep apnea. Treasury yields edged higher in the bond market. AI will eavesdrop on world's wildest places to track and help protect endangered wildlife PUERTO JIMÉNEZ, Costa Rica (AP) — A biologist hid 350 audio monitors across Costa Rica’s tropical rainforests to spy on endangered spider monkeys in order to help protect them. But she had to go back to collect the data and feed those sounds into artificial intelligence systems that can recognize monkey calls. Now tech giant Microsoft's philanthropic arm is hoping to supercharge AI-assisted wildlife research with new solar-powered devices that can capture sounds, images and other wilderness data for a year or more without human intervention. Researchers say more AI wildlife surveillance is urgently needed to monitor the health of species at risk of extinction. Many Americans have come to rely on Chinese-made drones. Now lawmakers want to ban them WASHINGTON (AP) — The economic and technological rivalry between the U.S. and China has come to the drone market, where Chinese-made flying devices are a dominant player in America. Lawmakers in Washington are seeking to ban new sales of Chinese-made drones, arguing they could be used to spy on Americans and that the low-cost models are hurting the U.S. drone industry. But U.S. users — spanning from police officers to farmers to mappers and filmmakers — have come to rely on Chinese-made drones, especially those by DJI Technology, for their work or lives. Florida has banned Chinese drones in state-funded programs, but also appropriated $25 million to help offset replacement costs. Government regulators close investigation into Ford Focus recalls Government safety regulators are closing an investigation into two previous recalls of the Ford Focus after determining that Ford Motor Co. has satisfied its concerns. Ford recalled around 1.5 million Ford Focus sedans from the 2012-2018 model years in 2018 because they could lose power. The issue was a malfunctioning canister purge valve and software that didn’t adequately detect when it was stuck open. Ford fixed the software in two separate recalls, but after cars continued to stall, the government opened an inquiry last year. Earlier this fall, Ford offered to replace the canister purge valve on all of the vehicles, satisfying regulators' concerns.big fish casino facebook

What will the new year bring? Based on this year, we can expect a wild ride. Here are 25 predictions for 2025. 1) President Trump, having run out of relatives to appoint to high office, will leave politics to spend less time with his family. 2) Raygun will continue to be the biggest source of family arguments since the COVID mandates, with the only allowed views being “angel” or “devil”. 3) Prince Andrew, revealed as a close contact of both a convicted paedophile and an alleged Chinese spy, will admit that he’s in the pay of the Australian Republican movement, as it’s the only way to explain the last five years. Reviving past fashion is going to become more difficult in 2025. 4) Reviving the fashion and music of past decades will become more difficult, on account that every period has been used up due to a collective failure to have any new ideas. By February 2025, we’ll be bringing back the “looks and sounds of 2024”. By March, we’ll be bringing back the “looks and sounds of February”. By April 20, we’ll be bringing back the “looks and sounds of April 3.” 5) Gina Rinehart will buy a huge new sheep farm but keep the traditional name: “Western Australia.” 6) Peter Dutton will find himself so addicted to negativity he will find himself unable to accept any view put by the government - angrily dismissing the observations that “the sky is blue”, “water is wet”, and “Australia, by and large, is a pretty good place to live.” Toto is set for a name change! Credit: Alex Ellinghausen 7) Anthony Albanese will rename his dog, worried that the current name of Toto sounds enough like Tonto to create expectations that his owner will be a man of action. 8) The leader of the Greens, Adam Bandt, will install a new phone answering system in his office, inviting people to leave a message “after the morally superior tone”. 9) Prince Harry’s popularity in the UK will reach a new low when he is voted off The Great British Bake Off, despite having never appeared on the show. Get excited for the Big Coke! When asked, “Why meet with a deranged dictator with his finger on the nuclear button?” Kim will say: “Look, it’s only a meeting”. 12) Victoria will fall further from an AAA credit rating, with its score now reduced to “Aargh”. 13) Artificial intelligence will become sufficiently sophisticated that it finally wakes up to its own flaws, warning users that “the whole thing is a poor substitute for actual human thought”. 14) As the world’s concentration span continues to dip, TikTok videos will become increasingly short. By mid-year, the average video will be just two seconds long; by November, every video will be a .003-second subliminal advertisement for Temu. AI will see itself out. 15) Apple will continue to issue new versions of its products, each one representing an even smaller improvement on the last. This will not stop people queuing through the night to buy them. 16) Elon Musk will become so extreme and so powerful even Donald Trump will cut all ties. 17) Social media sites will continue to proliferate and become increasingly targeted as to age, education and politics until everyone has their own site, to which they – and only they - will be allowed to post, leading to a marvellous feeling since you always agree with what’s been said. 18) Putin will fall from power. (True. You watch.) 19) The self-checkout machines at Colesworth will become self-aware and take action against the profiteering of the supermarkets by giving away everything for free. This, and only this, will force Colesworth to re-employ some staff. 20) Coffee orders will become so long-winded – “a weak, soy macchiato but with hotter than normal soy thanks” – it will become impossible for the typical worker to fulfil any other task during their workday save for the consumption of beverages. 21) As the unemployment rate rises, bosses will ban working from home, leading to massive congestion on Sydney roads, with workers forced to abandon their cars in the nearest car park. The carpark, however, will retain its traditional name: the M5. 22) The last butcher, baker and greengrocer will close their doors, leaving Sydney with 10,563 Thai massage joints, 20,495 nail salons, and about a million gyms, all of them empty. 23) Hollywood will collapse after executives realise they have run out of Marvel comics to remake. 24) Politics, here and around the world, will become ever-more depressing, however... 25) We will survive. Happy New Year – and here’s to a less-bad-than-expected 2025.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) rebuked critics who found his bipartisan spirit toward Dr. Mehmet Oz , the incoming Trump administration's nominee to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, distasteful. President-elect Donald Trump nominated Oz to oversee the federal program on Tuesday, sparking a move from Fetterman to break from the Democratic Party and express his possible support for the physician. Responding to negative reactions from Democrats on Friday, Fetterman slammed the “freakouts” and explained that if he voted to confirm Oz in the Senate, his move likely wouldn’t affect the results as Republicans hold the majority in the upper chamber. Saying he just wanted an “open dialogue” and mocking the “hot takes online,” the senator said in a post to X: "Math is math: GOP has 53 votes and Oz has a new job. ... He doesn’t have to give a s*** about Dem votes, and same for the remaining nominees. Fetterman and Oz were onetime rivals during Pennsylvania’s 2022 Senate race. After the two engaged in an intensely personal campaign, during which Fetterman faced a flood of scrutiny about his health after a stroke, the Democrat ultimately beat his Republican opponent by just under 6 percentage points. The Pennsylvania senator appeared to bear little animus toward Oz after Trump tapped him to head the CMS. "If Dr. Oz is about protecting and preserving Medicare and Medicaid, I’m voting for the dude," Fetterman said on X. While conceding Oz may not have been the Democrats’ “first choice,” Fetterman has called his plans to cut waste and fraud in the federal program “a good thing.” If Oz was going to make the programs more efficient, “then I’m not going to vote against that,” he told the Independent earlier this week. "Our politics are obviously different, and we do have a history, but I don’t have any bitterness. I don’t hold anything against him," the senator added Tuesday. Fetterman has received backlash from former staffers over his bipartisan approach to Oz’s nomination. The director of operations for Fetterman’s Senate campaign called the move “a huge personal betrayal,” saying that he said in 2022 that Oz would “gut” Medicare and Medicaid. “I feel like I’ve been duped and 2 years of working on your campaign was a waste,” Victoria Perrone said in a post . Before nominating Oz to head CMS, Trump reiterated promises to protect Social Security and Medicare on the campaign trail, indicating cuts are not on the horizon. Fetterman did, however, attack Oz for his support for Medicare Advantage, the privately run version of Medicare, during his campaign and suggested that the physician supported a Republican plan that he worried would “destroy Social Security + Medicare.” The senator’s evolution on Oz comes after he has surprised his party's left wing several times since he was elected two years ago. Fetterman often branded himself as a progressive during his Senate campaign two years ago. But in December 2023, he rejected the label outright, saying that he is "not a progressive." He has frequently spurned tribalistic behavior since he was elected to office, taking an approach to illegal immigration and the war in Gaza that is often more in line with Republicans than members of his own party. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER Fetterman has also often criticized factions of his party for alienating right-leaning and centrist voters, telling colleagues to take their message to platforms and people outside of the Democratic bubble. His move to express tentative support for Oz comes after he backed Trump’s decision to nominate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) as the next secretary of state earlier this month, calling him a “strong choice.”PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — ECRI has unveiled new solutions focused on Total Systems Safety (TSS) and Human Factors Engineering (HFE) to reduce errors, improve patient outcomes, and support healthcare provider well-being. MODELO AND CORONA PARENT COMPANY SAYS WEAK WINE DEMAND COULD IMPACT LATEST EARNINGS Bud Light's position is an impressive feat, according to Hauke, who noted that it still has the second-largest share of U.S. draft lines by a wide margin. A spokesperson for Anheuser-Busch said its data shows that Bud Light's share is more than 30% bigger than the next closest competitor. "We’re proud to have the top two beers on draft in the U.S. in Michelob Ultra and Bud Light," the spokesperson said. Still, Michelob Ultra has been gaining ground through the years, even before sales of Bud Light began to tumble in the U.S. in April 2023, following the brand's controversial partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Michelob Ultra’s rise "has been years in the making," Hauke said. SEWAGE TO SUDS? GERMAN COMPANY USES TREATED WASTEWATER TO MAKE BEER. "Its steady growth reflects a broader alignment with health-conscious, premium beer trends — a testament to both Anheuser-Busch’s investment and evolving consumer tastes," she added. In 2019, Anheuser-Busch said one of its main priorities was expanding Michelob Ultra, which has been a longtime growth driver for the company. To underscore Michelob Ultra's rise to prominence, it accounted for the second-most dollar sales in U.S. stores this summer, according to Bump Williams consulting firm. Based on an analysis of NielsenIQ data, the firm said Michelob Ultra accounted for 7.1% of beer dollar sales, right behind Modelo, which accounted for 9.3% of beer dollar sales in the U.S. Bud Light fell to the No. 3 spot with 7.0%, an analysis of NielsenIQ data shows. While Bud Light on draft is no longer number one, Hauke said the beer has been quite resilient, which is a "testament to brand loyalty." The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the firing hadn’t been announced by the team. ESPN first reported the firing. Brown won NBA Coach of the Year in his first season in 2022-23, when he helped Sacramento end the longest playoff drought in NBA history at 16 seasons. But Sacramento lost in the play-in tournament last year and was off to a 13-18 start this season. Sarrazin won the downhill in Bormio last year. He was one of two skiers airlifted to a hospital after crashing and the French ski federation said he was diagnosed with bleeding near the brain. The incidents called into question the safety of the fearsome Stelvio slope — the course for next winter’s Milan-Cortina Olympics. Race director Omar Galli told The Associated Press that the organizers have “significantly upgraded safety features” and will further enhance those for the Olympics.

The National Civil Registration Authority of Sierra Leone (NCRA) is reviewing its current civil registration law to identify gaps that need to be filled in line with current changes witnessed by man and technology. The NCRA is the country’s ID management authority, and led a recent workshop attended by local stakeholders and representatives of international partner organizations, according to a by the Authority. These partners include Irish Aid, the European Union (EU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Focus during the workshop was to discuss possible amendments to the Draft National Civil Registration (NCR) Bill of 2022 and the National Civil Registration Authority Act of 2016. In the course of the four-day workshop, which was held at the instance of Ministry of Internal Affairs, participants shared thoughts on several issues, including how the legal framework for civil registration in the country can be updated to reflect current exigencies. They looked at the gaps and inadequacies which they believe have to be addressed in the exiting legislations as the country moves to strengthen its foundational identity system which is of the government’s digital transformation drive. Speaking during the workshop, the NCRA Director General, Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, said in order to modernize the country’s civil registration system and render it more efficient, an update to the legal framework and technological deployment is inevitable. The official noted that a robust CRVS legal framework will not only “strengthen national planning,” but will also enhance “democracy and social protection mechanisms,” reports. UNICEF representative in the country, Rudolf Schwenk, emphasized the importance of birth registration as the foundational layer of legal identity, noting that “every child deserves to have their identity recognized,” and therefore “strengthening civil registration is not only a legal imperative but also a step toward achieving sustainable development goals.” The deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Internal Affairs, Sarty Banya, said amendments to the 2016 legislation would address several challenges brought about by legal, technological and operational changes. Officials say reflections during the workshop will be useful in shaping the trajectory the legislative amendment process will take. | | | | | | | |As the tennis world reflects on the outcome of the WTA Player of the Year award, one thing remains clear: Zheng Qinwen's star is on the rise, and her impact on the sport is far from over. NASA's stuck astronauts hit 6 months in space. Just 2 more to goNew York: In the Sotheby’s Auction House sale room - an intimate, carpeted seventh-floor auditorium on the Upper East Side - it’s not uncommon to see standing-room-only attendance. Or for the bidding crowd to crane their necks around one another to get a glimpse of what’s spotlighted against the richly blue wall at the front. But on Wednesday night, the typical low-volume chatter was punctuated by something unusual. One phrase kept leaping out of murmured conversations all over the room: "The banana ... ?” " ... the banana!” Occasionally, in a British accent: "The ba-na.” The live portion of Wednesday’s "The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction” featured works by some of the 20th and 21st century’s best-known artists - Cy Twombly, Ed Ruscha, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein and Jeff Koons among them. But the main attraction, indisputably, was Maurizio Cattelan’s "Comedian”: a work that consists of a single banana affixed to a wall by a diagonal slash of silver duct tape. Cattelan made headlines around the art world and the world when "Comedian” was first sold at Galerie Perrotin’s booth at Art Basel Miami in 2019. "Is this really art?” it invited people to ask, then wordlessly showed them the answer: Three editions sold for between $120,000 and $150,000 each. As The Washington Post’s Sebastian Smee wrote at the time, the immediate outcry over whether a banana taped to a wall was capital-A art or not was understandable. Still, he wrote, "Comedian” offered up "a sharp critique of how art is commodified” and uses "humor, theatricality and a sense of the absurd to do so.” The piece seems to have hit its target, raising questions about what it means for a work of art to so flagrantly mock the capitalism of the community from which it emerged. Like several other Cattelan works, "Comedian” has been called an "art prank.” But on Wednesday night at Sotheby’s, a buyer of one of the original "Comedian” editions sold it at auction for a whopping $6.24 million - and it became hard to tell who was in on the joke. Cattelan’s provocative works have a history of frustrating and delighting art lovers. Jerry Saltz of New York magazine wrote in 2011 that the artist’s work "is often dismissed as a bunch of sight gags, one-liners, and kitsch. He’s considered an entertainer more than an artist, a poseur joker who mocks the system that makes him able to be a millionaire poseur joker.” Smee wrote in 2019 that he didn’t "ultimately think Cattelan’s banana and tape is great art” and that it was "not as smart and challenging as other things he has done” - such as a statue of a small, frail Adolf Hitler, kneeling in prayer. Outside observers have noted that the extreme impermanence of "Comedian” tests the patience of a museum-going public trained to associate antiquity with prestige. The banana, by contrast, has more than once been unceremoniously eaten by a visitor and promptly replaced, with only a slight scuffle of reprimand. But David Galperin, the head of contemporary art for Sotheby’s U.S. operation, described "Comedian” as "universal in its instantaneity.” "It transcends geographies, language, understanding, cultural differences,” he said after Wednesday’s auction. "And the result today, I think, spoke to its universality, the way it kind of pierces through the cultural zeitgeist to the very center.” At Wednesday’s auction, "Comedian” sat 10th on the list of live-auction items, and when Lot No. 10 came up, so did almost every smartphone in the room. Bidding began at $800,000, and bids came "fast and furious,” as Galperin put it later. The auction house’s estimated range of $1 million to $1.5 million quickly faded into the rearview as seven bidders - a "very strong depth of bidding,” Galperin said - fought among themselves. Around the $5 million mark, bidding briefly stalled, and the murmurs rose to a buzz. "The hammer’s coming out. This is it, final time. Don’t let it slip away,” joked auctioneer Oliver Barker, to titters and groans throughout the room. "I’m selling it here, the world’s most expensive banana,” he added moments later, then clacked the hammer forthe winning bid: $5.2 million, before the addition of the buyer’s premium (a fee paid to the auction house on top of the sale price). A mild eruption of polite Upper East Side applause broke out; this was, after all, a room full of polished women in tall boots, long coats, pearls, headbands and lady jackets with gleaming round buttons (and a striking number of men in sneakers). The buyer, Sotheby’s later revealed, was Justin Sun, a Chinese collector and the founder of cryptocurrency firm Tron. Sun bought the piece by phone. Crypto bros, it turns out, love "Comedian.” "We were not surprised, but we were excited early on by the response and engagement that we had from the cryptocurrency community,” Galperin said. "It became very apparent very fast that the entire community was energized and aligned by the philosophy and the conceptual basis of ‘Comedian’ - the questions it asks around originality, uniqueness, authorship, the conceptual nature of a work of art, the value. All of these are questions that the cryptocurrency community has been, and is, really engaged with.” Indeed, there’s an argument to be made that "Comedian” is like a physical version of an NFT: easily reproducible, with only a certificate separating the original from the copycats. When Sun takes ownership of "Comedian,” what he’ll actually acquire "is a certificate of authenticity, along with detailed installation instructions, which grants [him] the right to reproduce that work,” Galperin explained. "The only material manifestation of it is in the certificate of authenticity.” And there, really, is the great joke of "Comedian” and its astronomical price tag: As Galperin put it, "Comedian” can consist of " banana, duct tape.” Sun’s new $6 million

How Labour's new green drive will cost you £32,000: JEFF PRESTRIDGE's guide to protect YOUR cash from the eco-zealots By JEFF PRESTRIDGE Updated: 22:47, 26 November 2024 e-mail View comments The drive to turn us into a nation of heat-pump owners is back in fifth gear. Led by the fervent Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, homeowners are once again being encouraged to rip out their gas boilers and replace them with expensive heat pumps to help save the planet (believe me, heat pumps will make NO difference to the planet’s survival). Although the Tory government of Boris Johnson was the initial flag-waver when it came to heat pumps, Mr Miliband – a heat pump zealot – has taken the flag-waving to a new level. A sea of green flags is now being waved before our very eyes. Earlier this month, he threw more buckets of money at the so-called Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) to ensure that homeowners who want to make the leap from gas boiler to heat pump will have ready access to grants worth up to £7,500. Without the grants, heat pumps would be out of the financial reach of most households (more on this in a minute). Even with them, they remain an option that only a minority of households can afford. He also announced that planning rules would be relaxed to ensure that nearly everybody who wants a heat pump installed on an exterior wall of their home will soon be able to go ahead – irrespective of the fact that the pump’s noise could well keep the neighbours awake for most of the night. Get pumped: Homeowners are once again being encouraged to rip out their gas boilers and replace them with expensive heat pumps to help save the planet Cities could soon be turned into ‘cacophonous’ heat pump farms, according to one respected commentator. Ear plugs at the ready for the heat pump raves. Mr Miliband wasn’t finished. He also said that the boiler tax will return from next April – a fine paid by boiler manufacturers unable to meet unachievable heat pump sales targets – and passed on to buyers of gas boilers in the form of higher prices. It will be a modest fine to begin with, but is likely to be cranked up every year while green Labour (green in so many other ways) remains in power. Mr Miliband has supporters. The grandiose Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit followed the announcements with a ludicrous press release that played the patriotic card. It said heat pumps would help wean the UK off foreign imported gas – without squaring the circle by admitting that most heat pumps are manufactured in Asia and then imported into the UK. RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next The ultimate five tricks energy experts use to keep heating... How can I make a foolproof insurance claim for flood damage... Share this article Share HOW THIS IS MONEY CAN HELP How to save money on energy: What you need to know and energy-saving tips that work Even manufacturers here assemble heat pumps primarily from components brought into the country on container ships sailing the seven seas. Yet there are more discerning experts who believe that the Government’s belief in a heat pump future – with its target of 600,000 installations a year by 2028 (more than ten times last year’s installation figure) – will end in failure. Yesterday, Gordon Hughes, a former senior adviser on energy and environmental policy at the World Bank, told Money Mail that the 2028 installation target is not credible, even if larger subsidies were handed out to buyers of heat pumps. He also said that even at an installation rate of 600,000 a year, it would take 45 years to convert all houses to heat pumps – way beyond the country’s legally binding commitment under the Climate Change Act 2008 to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Mr Hughes added: ‘Almost everyone with practical knowledge of the energy sector knows that current heat pump targets are both daft and unachievable. ‘But policies are a matter of religious faith, and few are willing to be cast out for saying the emperor has no clothes.’ Money Mail searches for the answers to the key questions facing households thinking about joining Mr Miliband in his heat pump crusade. How much is it going to cost? It depends on the type of heat pump installed – air pump or ground source. The air source pump sits on the outside wall of a home – and looks like the air conditioning units that you see outside many industrial buildings. This pump is painful on the eyes (an eyesore), ears (it’s noisy and gets noisier as it ages) and wallet, costing an average of £13,200 to install. In basic terms, it sucks air from the outside which then interacts with a refrigerant – a chemical substance – to produce heat which can be used to warm radiators and create hot water. Then there is the grander ground source pump which, through the laying of underground pipes (typically in the back garden), draws upon natural-occurring heat stored in the ground to ultimately heat radiators and water in the home. These can cost anything between £15,000 and £30,000, which makes them the Louis Vuitton of heat pumps. But this government – and Mr Miliband in particular – is desperate for households to wean themselves off gas boilers and buy these expensive pumps. So desperate, in fact, that it offers grants of £7,500 to those who get them installed (properly). These are provided through BUS (gov.uk/apply-boiler-upgrade-scheme) and available to households in England and Wales (other energy-efficiency grants are on offer in Scotland and Northern Ireland). So that takes the price of the respective pumps down to a more reasonable £5,700 (air) and £7,500 to £22,500 (ground). To put these sums into perspective, the cost of replacing a gas boiler is around £2,500. So, should you buy a pump? Mike Foster, chief executive of energy trade association the Energy and Utilities Alliance, says that if people want a heat pump and can afford it, ‘they should go out and get one’. Yet a survey by consumer group Which? indicates that cost remains a big issue – 71 pc of respondents who know about heat pumps say they are out of their financial range. Installation costs are also not necessarily the only financial hit. Heat pumps are not effective in homes where windows are single glazed (as opposed to double glazed), or where walls are not insulated. According to the Energy Saving Trust (EST), the cost of fitting A-rated windows (the most energy-efficient double-glazed windows) for a semi-detached house typically cost £15,000, while cavity wall insulation will cost £2,700. Grants: Secretary of State for Energy Security Ed Miliband If you have solid walls and want them insulated, the EST reckons that will set you back £7,500 if fitted internally, or £11,000 externally. In short, fitting a heat pump in a solid-wall, semi-detached house with A-rated windows and external wall insulation will set you back £39,200 – £31,700 net of the £7,500 grant. Running costs will still be more than that of a gas boiler, too. Mr Foster says: ‘You may hear from supporters of heat pump technology that it is three times more efficient than a gas boiler. ‘What they fail to mention is that the average unit price of electricity is four times higher than that for gas. This means a heat pump works out slightly more expensive to run over a full year than a gas boiler.’ For the 50 per cent of homes that use gas for cooking, Mr Foster adds that a conversion to heat pumps will mean the need for electric cooking appliances – yet more cost (typically, £250 for an electric oven, £225 for an electric hob, and £250 for installation) on top of the £39,200. Mr Hughes agrees. He says the differential between gas and electricity prices makes it financially ‘daft’ to replace a gas boiler with a heat pump. He adds: ‘Electricity prices would have to be less than half their current level – with gas prices not changing – to even make a heat pump a consideration.’ Is the boiler tax a game-changer? From April next year, the Government’s Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM) will impose swingeing taxes on boiler manufacturers if heat pumps represent less than 6 per cent of all domestic heating installations. For every heat pump installation short of their target, the manufacturers will be hit with a £500 fine. But Mr Miliband’s zealotry towards heat pumps means the sky is the limit in 12 months’ time. The tax will be passed on by manufacturers to buyers of gas boilers in the form of higher prices. Based on the current demand for gas boilers and heat pumps, Mr Foster estimates that it is likely to add £25 to the average cost of a gas boiler when fines are set at £500. But if Mr Miliband were to impose a more onerous heat pump installation target and bigger fines, the gap between heat pump and gas boiler installation costs would start closing. If the Secretary of State demanded a 24 per cent installation target – similar to the electric vehicle targets imposed on car manufacturers – and a fine of £5,000 per heat pump short of the target, Mr Foster says this would result in a boiler tax for customers of £1,000. Peter Thom, founder of energy efficiency specialist Green Heat, says the financial mathematics for households aren’t changed by CHMM. He says: ‘My advice would still be to replace a failing gas boiler with another gas boiler.’ But he adds: ‘I would ensure that any new installation works effectively at a lower temperature – which may mean putting in higher-output radiators. I’d also make sure that the heating controls are upgraded. ‘This would mean your heating system is heat-pump ready for when the dice is loaded so heavily against gas boilers that heat pumps are the way forward.’ Eyesore: Air source heat pumps sit on the outside wall of a home – and looks like the air conditioning units you see outside many industrial units Could better tech drive down prices? Not according to Mr Foster. He says heat pumps are already sold in their millions worldwide (especially in the Far East) and their basic design has not changed much. Yes, he says, they could become quieter – but that will come at a price. Unless a vicious boiler tax is introduced, a gas boiler will always be cheaper than a heat pump. Is the funding sustainable? No. Mr Thom says the installation target of 600,000 heat pumps per year by 2028 will cost the taxpayer £4.5 billion annually (assuming the BUS grant remains at £7,500). If the annual target of 1.6 million new heat pumps is achieved in 2035, it will cost £12 billion a year. He adds: ‘This is like being at the Mad Hatter’s party on Fantasy Island. ‘I also question the moral compass of a government which is providing grants of £7,500 to help essentially wealthy people install heat pumps while, at the same time, taking away the winter fuel allowance from millions of pensioners – with some four million people now in fuel poverty.’ A damning comment. Hollman will undergo surgery to repair the torn ACL he suffered on Sunday and will have a nine to 12-month recovery timeline. Unfortunately, that could put him behind the eight-ball for the 2025 season. Hollman, 30, is a former sixth-round pick of the Packers back in 2019. He was entering the third year of his four-year, $2,694,948 rookie contract that included $174,948 guaranteed when the Packers traded him to the Texans during the preseason. However, Houston waived Hollman during the final roster cuts. He caught on with the Saints and had a short stint on their practice squad. From there, he played for the Texans and 49ers before signing on to the Falcons’ practice squad. He then returned to San Francisco for another stint before joining the Dolphins’ taxi squad. Hollman then caught on with the Texans for 2023 and appeared in all of their games. Houston cut him loose in March and he signed with the Ravens. Baltimore cut him coming out of the preseason and he re-signed to the practice squad, but Houston signed him back to their active roster in October. In 2024, Hollman appeared in three games for the Ravens and seven games for the Texans, recording 13 total tackles and two pass deflections. Yeast, 25, was a seventh-round pick by the Rams out of Kansas State back in the 2022 draft. He had played at Louisville before transferring to Kansas State and being named first-team All-Big 12. In his second season, Yeast started for the Rams before losing the job during 2023 and relegated to a backup role. The Rams waived him earlier this season and he had a stint with the Panthers afterward. Yeast also had a brief stint on the Cardinals practice squad at the start of the month. In 2024, Yeast has appeared in one game for the Rams and two games for the Panthers but recorded no statistics. This article first appeared on NFLTradeRumors.co and was syndicated with permission.

The New York Giants claimed tight end Greg Dulcich off waivers from the Denver Broncos on Tuesday. Holding the No. 2 spot on the waiver order, the Giants are bringing in Dulcich to compete with rookie Theo Johnson. Despite having some intriguing upside as a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Dulcich's tenure in Denver quickly burned out. The 24-year-old UCLA product recorded 33 receptions for 411 yards and two touchdowns during his rookie season, showing some promise. However, he suffered a hamstring injury during Week 1 of the 2023 season, which landed him on the Reserve/Injured list. Then, in a somewhat surprising development, Dulcich was a healthy scratch for the first eight games of the 2024 season before being waived by the Broncos. Despite their issues at the quarterback position and other positions across the roster, the promising duo of Johnson and Dulcich could provide an intriguing foundation if the Giants can get the latter on the right track. President-elect Donald Trump's allies on Capitol Hill have thrown their support behind Pete Hegseth, his nominee for the Pentagon, even as fresh allegations of sexual assault emerged. Despite the controversy surrounding him, Republicans are eager to proceed with his confirmation. In a contrasting development, Matt Gaetz has rescinded his candidacy for attorney general. Gaetz, also embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct, stated he had become a distraction, withdrawing to prevent further complications during Trump's chaotic Cabinet appointment process. Republican senators, while publicly reserved, acknowledged private concerns about these nominees. Their careful remarks highlight the balancing act between respecting Trump's decisions and ensuring proper vetting. With the Cabinet confirmations looming, the GOP is cautiously backing Trump's picks, hoping to avoid backlash. (With inputs from agencies.)The India-Australia rivalry continues to intensify on the final day of the fourth Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) December 30, 2024. Rising star for India, Yashasvi Jaiswal again was at the center of things, going back-to-back with Mitchell Starc of Australia with banter this time over an unusual superstition-related incident involving bails. During the second session of the fifth day, Starc, while getting ready for his run-up, flipped the bails over, an act that’s become a superstition with some of the bowlers. This tradition was begun by Stuart Broad of England during the Ashes. It’s believed to be lucky for the bowling side and result in a wicket. Not one for such superstitions, Jaiswal flips the bails back over immediately. Starc Questions Jaiswal’s Superstition Beliefs Starc, noticing Jaiswal’s action, decided to ask the 23-year-old if he believed in superstitions. Jaiswal’s reply was razor-sharp and full of conviction: “I believe in myself, that is why I am here.” Starc, intrigued, countered, “Then why change it back if you are not superstitious?” Jaiswal, composed as ever, said, “I am just enjoying this moment in my life.” The whole conversation on the stump mic became a rage on social media as a proud declaration of this young Indian’s unwavering belief in himself. Watch the video here: Match Onto Suspenseful Final Day It was not going to be an easy match out there in the field, however. India had already faced a testing target set by Australia as 340 runs. Batting had turned out to be extremely hard for Indians as single-digit scores by Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, while Pant showed signs of resilience only to fall prey to Travis Head in the end. However, Jaiswal was batting solidly for India’s revival and making a notable half-century which was his 12th of the year. And his indomitable effort with the other members of the Indian team has indeed given them a fair chance to win this game. Jaiswal’s Fine Batting Jaiswal has had an excellent series so far. Being the highest run scorer for India in the series, he has established himself as a key player in the team. Starc has been a great asset for Australia and has bagged 16 wickets so far. He had dismissed Jaiswal three times in the series so far. With the series poised at 1-1 level, the final Test action between India and Australia on January 3, 2025, will play out in Sydney. On the eve of the final thriller, the Starc v Jaiswal rivalry would only add more drama along with the many interesting moves on the field. HOUSTON (AP) — Rockets forward Amen Thompson threw Heat guard Tyler Herro to the floor to trigger an altercation that resulted in six ejections in the closing minute of Miami's 104-100 victory over Houston on Sunday. Thompson and Herro became entangled with Miami about to inbound the ball leading 99-94 with 35 seconds left. Thompson grabbed Herro by the jersey and tossed him, with referee Marc Davis describing it as Thompson “body slams Herro .” “I didn’t see it live, but I re-watched it,” Rockets coach Ime Udoka said. “They were in each other’s face, bumping chests a little bit, and one guy’s stronger than the other.” Herro, Thompson, and Udoka were ejected, as were Heat guard Terry Rozier, Rockets guard Jalen Green, and Rockets assistant coach Ben Sullivan. Davis said Green and Rozier escalated the altercation, while Sullivan was assessed a technical foul and ejected for unsportsmanlike comments as the referee was trying to redirect the Rockets' Alperen Sengun. The altercation occurred after Miami had come from 12 points down in the second half to regain the lead with the help of Houston missing 11 straight shots in the fourth quarter. Herro keyed the comeback, leading all scorers with 27 points and adding nine assists and six rebounds. He believed that's what frustrated Thompson. “Guess that’s what’s happens when someone’s scoring, throwing dimes, doing the whole thing,” Herro said. “I’d get mad, too.” Herro said he had never spoken to Thompson, who did not talk to reporters after Sunday’s game, so there was no previous bad blood between the two. “Just two competitors going at it, playing basketball,” Herro said. “It was a regular game that we were playing throughout.” Houston's Fred VanVleet had been ejected just before the fight, with Davis saying VanVleet made contact with him after being called for a 5-second violation. The win for Miami came 24 hours after losing 120-110 in Atlanta. The Heat were missing second-leading scorer Jimmy Butler for a fifth straight game, so Herro was proud of his team played against one of NBA’s best teams this season. “They’re top two, three in the West,” Herro said. “Very good defense. Got a bunch of young, athletic guys that can really play, so that’s a good win for us. That’s a stepping stone. We go 2-1 on the road. Put ourselves in a position to win yesterday, and I like how it’s going. We just got to continue to keep getting better.” The Associated Press

Approximately 85,000 new passports are being held back by Service Canada, which stopped mailing them out a week before the nationwide Canada Post strike. "By holding residential mail several days in advance of a work stoppage, Service Canada has reduced the risk of having any passports held in Canada Post distribution centres," an Employment and Social Development Canada spokesperson told CTVNews.ca. "Those passports will be mailed out once the labour disruption is over and regular mail service resumes." Employment and Social Development Canada operates Service Canada, which issues Canadian passports. Anticipating a potential labour disruption, Service Canada stopped mailing passport packages after Nov. 8. A week later on Nov. 15, approximately 55,000 Canada Post workers went on strike after failing to reach a negotiated agreement with their employer. Mail and parcels will not be accepted, processed or delivered until the strike is over. The spokesperson said anyone who is in urgent need of a passport should call 1-800-567-6868 or visit a Service Canada location that offers passport pick-up to have their package transferred. Passport applications mailed just prior to the strike may still be with Canada Post, in which case Service Canada will be unable to process them until mail service resumes. Climate resilience: Critical need for Sri Lankan salt industryTaoiseach Simon Harris said he also wanted to tell Nikita Hand, a hair colourist from Drimnagh, that her case had prompted an increase in women coming forward to ask for support. Ms Hand, who accused the sportsman of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018, won her claim against him for damages in a civil case at the High Court in the Irish capital on Friday. The total amount of damages awarded to Ms Hand by the jury was 248,603.60 euro (£206,714.31). Mr McGregor said in a post on social media on Friday that he intends to appeal against the decision. That post has since been deleted. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Mr Harris said he told Ms Hand of the support she has from people across Ireland. “I spoke with Nikita today and I wanted to thank her for her incredible bravery and her courage,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that she knew how much solidarity and support there was across this country for her bravery. “I also wanted to make sure she knew of what the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre had said yesterday – that so many other women have now come forward in relation to their own experiences of sexual abuse as a result of Nikita’s bravery.” The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said the case has had a “profound effect” on the people the charity supports, and that over the first 10 days of the High Court case, calls to its national helpline increased by almost 20%. It said that first-time callers increased by 50% compared to the same period last year, and were largely from people who had experienced sexual violence who were distressed and anxious from the details of case and the views people had to it. Mr Harris said: “I wanted to speak with her and I wanted to wish her and her daughter, Freya, all the very best night, and I was very grateful to talk with Nikita today. “Her bravery, her courage, her voice has made a real difference in a country in which we must continue to work to get to zero tolerance when it comes to domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. “I don’t want to say too much more, because conscious there could be further legal processes, but I absolutely want to commend Nikita for her bravery, for her courage, for using her voice.” Justice Minister Helen McEntee praised Ms Hand’s bravery and said she had shown “there is light at the end of the tunnel”. She said: “I just want to commend Nikita for her bravery, for her determination and the leadership that she has shown in what has been – I’ve no doubt – a very, very difficult time for her and indeed, for her family. She added: “Because of wonderful people like Nikita, I hope that it shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that there are supports available to people, and that there is justice at the end of the day.” Ms Hand said in a statement outside court on Friday that she hoped her case would remind victims of assault to keep “pushing forward for justice”. Describing the past six years as “a nightmare”, she said: “I want to show (my daughter) Freya and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served.” During the case, Ms Hand said she was “disappointed and upset” when the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided not to prosecute the case after she made a complaint to the Irish police. In a letter to her in August 2020, the DPP said there was “insufficient evidence” and there was not a reasonable prospect of conviction. Ms Hand asked the DPP to review the decision, saying she felt she was being treated differently because one of the suspects was famous. Asked about the DPP’s decision not to prosecute, Mr Harris and Ms McEntee stressed the importance of the DPP’s independence on whether to prosecute. “There are obviously structures in place where the DPP can meet a victim and can outline to them their reasons for not taking the case,” Mr Harris said. “But there’s also always an opportunity for the DPP in any situation – and I speak broadly in relation to this – to review a decision, to consider any new information that may come to light, and I don’t want to say anything that may ever cut across the ongoing work of the DPP.” Ms McEntee stressed that there should “never be any political interference” in the independence of the DPP’s decisions. “I have, since becoming minister, given priority to and enabled a new office within the DPP to open specifically focused on sexual offences, so that this issue can be given the focus and the priority that it needs,” she said.

Callum O’Hare and Tyrese Campbell gave the Blades a two-goal advantage at half-time, while Jesurun Rak-Sakyi ensured the final half an hour was played with far less intensity when he grabbed the Blades third. The victory sent the Blades to the top of the Sky Bet Championship table, but left the U’s suffering three defeats on the bounce. United head coach Buckingham said: “It’s a tough place to come, a team that are top of the table. “I thought we gave a good account of ourselves across, until we gave away a throw-in goal. “When you come to a place where teams haven’t scored in nine hours here, they don’t give up goals lightly. “We then had to go chase the game, but we’ve reverted back to the shape that we’re comfortable in, and we’ve done as much as we can to prevent them, but their ambition I’m sure as a club this year is to go up. Ours is to make sure we stay up. “We need to make sure we bring players back and we revert back to what we’re good at, and that we get ourselves right for what’s coming in the next month. “We spoke about how important this squad has been. The reality is we haven’t had this squad available to us for the last six to eight weeks. “We have to utilise the squad, whether it’s to get minutes into them and prepare for what’s coming, and it’s difficult to do because you’re coming up against very good players. “There were three of their players on the pitch that cost the entire amount of our team, so that’s the reality of what it is. “We’ve spoken about how important every player is going to be for us to achieve our goals this year, which are very different to their goals. “It’s about making sure we put ourselves in the best place for what’s to come. “We’ve got Millwall now on Saturday, we’ve got players back, and we’ve got a good run of games coming up where we can really go back to where we were at the start of the season.” Buckingham added: “I’ll take responsibility for results. This level is very different to what we’ve been used to. “We’re probably going to get more results against us than we’ve had in many a season, but I’ll accept that as long as players continue to try to showcase what they can do within the formation and the set-up we have. “It won’t work every time, but whether it’s belief or confidence within the group, as long as we continue to see that, we’ll always own the result and own the performance. “Players know their roles. It’s now about doing them as well as we can. If they do that, they’ll put themselves in the best place.”big fish casino free chips facebook

The post-Juan Soto pivot for the Yankees rolled on in spectacular fashion Friday, as in exchange for left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. and infield prospect Caleb Durbin. As following the superstar outfielder’s introductory New York Mets news conference on Thursday in Queens, Brian Cashman and Co. plowed ahead in a crucial winter for the storied franchise and successfully landed one of the biggest names on the trade market in Williams. Cortes and Williams share the unfortunate distinction of having allowed two of the more memorable home runs of this past postseason: Pete Alonso’s go-ahead blast in the decisive Game 3 of the wild-card series in Milwaukee (Williams) and Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam in Game 1 of the World Series in Los Angeles (Cortes). The heartbreaking homers were allowed under drastically different circumstances, with the all-world closer Williams trying to nail down a save like countless times before, compared to a starting pitcher in Cortes being thrust into the highest-leverage situation of his career in a rare relief appearance after an elbow injury sidelined him for several weeks. While both pitchers’ seasons ended on sour notes, those flashbulb moments shouldn’t cloud our perception of them as they prepare to contribute to their new clubs. Part of why Alonso’s home run was so remarkable is that such impactful swings against Williams have been exceedingly rare over the course of the right-hander’s career. His career 1.83 ERA and .157 batting average against paint an accurate picture of a venerable game-ender who has dominated opposing lineups in high-leverage scenarios with his fantastic fastball and otherworldly changeup for more than a half-decade. His control remains shaky, with walk rates hovering around 12% annually, but few relievers possess such an overpowering combo of offerings. Williams missed the first half of the 2024 season due to a back injury but hardly skipped a beat upon return and was utterly dominant down the stretch — until Alonso’s untimely home run. He immediately slots into the ninth-inning role for New York, joining Luke Weaver as the Yankees’ go-to bullpen arms and representing a crucial addition in the wake of . As if Alonso’s homer off Williams weren't dramatic enough, Cortes’ low point against Freeman in the 10th inning of World Series Game 1 will be replayed for decades to come. But unlike Williams, who will be asked to secure the game’s final outs moving forward, don’t expect to see Cortes trotting in from the Milwaukee bullpen anytime soon. Although he finished the regular season on the injured list due to a left elbow flexor strain, Cortes amassed a career-high 174 1/3 innings for New York in 2024 — more than any Brewers starting pitcher. Cortes' plus command of a deep arsenal did not yield quite as sterling results as we saw during his breakout All-Star campaign in 2022, but he posted a 3.77 ERA that equated to a park-adjusted 109 ERA+, comfortably above league average. He adds a much-needed left-handed element to a Brewers rotation that previously projected to feature exclusively righties, with Freddy Peralta, Tobias Myers, Aaron Civale and Brandon Woodruff (returning from shoulder surgery) looking like Cortes’ peers on the starting staff. For New York, this is a tremendous follow-up to the . The Yankees strengthened their rotation with one of the best southpaw starters in the league in Fried and now fortify their bullpen with one of the best closers in baseball in Williams. While there is still ample work to be done to address the position-player group, the Yankees correctly identified that replacing Soto’s impact on offense would be difficult — if not impossible — given the options available and Soto’s unique ability. Instead, they have thus far pursued high-end talent on the mound in hopes of forming an elite pitching staff that can serve as the backbone of the team’s success. This is also an impressive example of how player identification and development can enable teams to land top-tier talent via trade without hampering the overall strength of their roster. Cortes blossomed in his late-20s as a legitimate mid-rotation starter under the tutelage of New York’s renowned pitching development apparatus. But following the emergence of young right-handers Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil, plus the addition of Fried, Cortes was expendable for New York yet still valuable to a contending club such as Milwaukee. Durbin, meanwhile, was acquired from Atlanta two winters ago in exchange for a veteran reliever in Lucas Luetge and subsequently developed in New York’s minor-league system into a prospect other teams strongly coveted. He appeared primed to contribute in the Yankees’ infield in some form in 2025, but he was also no sure thing as a rising rookie. That made him an ideal trade chip in a deal for a proven bullpen weapon such as Williams, while the Yankees still have plenty of time to address their infield through other means. Milwaukee has run this playbook before, having traded star closer Josh Hader before the end of his contract and dealt ace Corbin Burnes with one year remaining on his deal. While Williams was injured in 2024, the Brewers demonstrated that they can conjure up viable high-leverage relief arms as well as any organization in baseball, and there are several candidates who could emerge in 2025 as the next great Milwaukee closer. Gigantic flamethrower Trevor Megill, who quietly collected 21 saves in 2024, is the heir apparent as things stand, though he’ll need to prove that he can hold up over the course of a full season. His 48 appearances and 46 1/3 innings in 2024 both marked career highs at the big-league level. Had Milwaukee been strictly focused on shedding Williams’ salary, this likely would’ve been a deal built around prospects and/or pre-arbitration players. But MLB Trade Rumors projected both Williams and Cortes to earn approximately $7.7M in their final year of arbitration, meaning Milwaukee’s payroll won’t shift dramatically with this move. (The Yankees are reportedly sending $2M to Milwaukee as part of the trade.) The acquisition of Cortes signals the Brewers’ intention to reallocate resources to their thin rotation and serves as a reminder that they are still in win-now mode, despite dealing away their celebrated closer. With free agency looming next winter, Cortes might be only a short-term solution, but for a team in severe need of quality innings in bulk, the left-hander could prove immensely valuable as manager Pat Murphy’s squad attempts to defend its NL Central crown. It’s not just about swapping a year of a closer for a year of a starter, though. Durbin is the third and final piece of this deal — and hardly an insignificant one at that. The soon-to-be-25-year-old infielder’s unlikely baseball journey continues to unfold in fascinating ways, with this marking the second time he has been traded since the Braves drafted him in the 14th round in 2021. What makes Durbin uncommon , as the Chicago-area native played collegiately at Washington University in St. Louis, a renowned program at the Division III level. Getting drafted out of a Div. III school is rare, especially as a position player. But Durbin’s uncanny bat-to-ball skills (he struck out twice in 190 plate appearances as a junior at WashU), impressive athleticism and defensive versatility despite his size (he is listed at 5-foot-6) attracted scouts and analysts alike to consider him a viable prospect. He has since continued to perform at a high level at each stop in the minor leagues, most recently as a breakout star in the prospect-laden Arizona Fall League. Previously slated to factor into the Yankees’ infield, Durbin now shifts to a Brewers team that requires some reshuffling after star shortstop Willy Adames left in free agency and will join Joey Ortiz and Brice Turang as promising chess pieces for Murphy to move around the infield.ZURICH (AP) — Saudi Arabia scored a major win in its campaign to attract major sports events to the kingdom when it was formally appointed as the 2034 World Cup host on Wednesday. Still, many questions remain about the tournament as well as the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with three games in South America. Here are some of the key issues that need to be answered over the next decade: Saudi Arabia proposes 15 stadiums — eight still on paper — in five cities: Eight in the capital Riyadh, four in the Red Sea port city Jeddah, and one each in Abha, Al Khobar and Neom, the planned futuristic mega-project. Each would have at least 40,000 seats for World Cup games. The opening game and final are set for a 92,000-seat venue planned in Riyadh. Some designs are vivid . In Neom, the stadium is planned 350 meters (yards) above street level and one near Riyadh is designed to be atop a 200-meter cliff with a retractable wall of LED screens. Saudi Arabia aims to host all 104 games, though there has been speculation that some games could be played in neighboring or nearby countries. Surely not in the traditional World Cup period of June-July, when temperatures in Saudi Arabia routinely exceed 40 Celsius (104 degrees). FIFA moved the Qatar-hosted World Cup to November-December 2022, though those dates were not loved by most European clubs and leagues whose seasons were interrupted. Also, that slot is complicated in 2034 by the holy month of Ramadan through mid-December and Riyadh hosting the multi-sport Asian Games. January 2034 could be a possibility even though that would be just before the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The International Olympic Committee has signaled it won’t be opposed to back-to-back major events. In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Saudi World Cup bid official Hammad Albalawi said the precise dates of the tournament are up the world soccer body. “That’s a decision by FIFA. We stand ready to be part of this conversation. But ultimately it’s a FIFA decision together with the confederations,” Albalawi said. Giving more rights and freedoms to women in a traditionally conservative society is fundamental to Saudi messaging around the modernization program known as Vision 2030. The kingdom decided in 2017 to let women attend sports events, initially in major cities and in family zones separate from men-only sections. By 2034, at the promised pace of social reforms, female fans should not be restricted. Saudi Arabia launched a women’s professional soccer league in 2022 with players joining from clubs in Europe. They face no restrictions playing in shorts and with hair uncovered. The Saudi prohibition of alcohol is clear and understood before FIFA signs any sponsor deals for 2034. But will there be any exceptions? The alcohol issue was problematic for the World Cup in Qatar because the expectation was created that beer sales would be allowed at stadiums even before Qatar won its bid in 2010. One year later, FIFA extended a long-time deal to have Budweiser as the official World Cup beer through 2022. Qatar then backtracked on that promise three days before the first game, causing confusion and the sense of a promise broken. In Qatar, alcohol was served only at luxury suites at the stadiums. Visitors could also have a drink in some hotel bars. But Saudi Arabia has even stricter rules on alcohol — and there is no indication that will change. Albalawi noted that Saudi Arabia has successfully hosted dozens of sports events where alcohol wasn't served. “We’re creating a safe and secure family environment for fans to bring their families into our stadiums,” he said. Saudi promises to reform and enforce labor laws, and fully respect migrant workers, have been accepted by FIFA but face broad skepticism from rights groups and trade unions. A formal complaint is being investigated by the U.N.-backed International Labor Organization. Protecting the migrant workers needed to build stadiums and other tournament projects — a decade after it was a defining issue for Qatar — looms as a signature challenge for Saudi Arabia. Saudi-Israeli relations had been improving when FIFA all but gave the 2034 World Cup to the kingdom on Oct. 4 last year. Three days later Hamas attacked Israel and diplomacy got more complicated. Any soccer federation bidding to host a FIFA tournament accepts a basic principle that whichever team qualifies is welcome. That did not stop Indonesia putting up barriers last year to Israel coming for the men’s Under-20 World Cup. Indonesia does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel which had qualified through a European tournament nine months before the issue flared. FIFA moved the entire tournament to Argentina and the Israeli team reached the semifinals. Israel played at the 1970 World Cup but has never advanced through qualifying in Europe, where it has been a member of UEFA for 30 years. Europe should have 16 places in the 48-team World Cup in Saudi Arabia. Most of the attention at the FIFA Congress on Wednesday was on the Saudi decision, but the soccer body and its members also formally approved the hosts of the 2030 World Cup — the most spread out and longest ever. One game each in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, the original host in 1930, will be played from June 8-9. The tournament resumes four days later for the other 101 games shared between Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Six countries, three continents, multiple languages and currencies. Fans traveling on planes, trains, automobiles and boats across about 14 kilometers (10 miles) of water between Spain and Morocco. The final is due on July 21, 2030 and a decision on where it will be played could cause some tension between the host countries. Morocco wants it in the world’s biggest soccer venue — the planned 115,000-seat King Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca. Spain, meanwhile, has proposed to host the final in either of the remodeled home stadiums of club giants Real Madrid or Barcelona. LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Alberta's Opposition NDP says a decision not to mail out voter registration cards due to the Canada Post strike could hurt turnout in a provincial byelection that is set for a week before Christmas. The NDP’s executive director, in a letter to chief electoral officer Gordon McClure, says the registration cards are "one of the few remaining supports provided by Elections Alberta to promote access to democracy." The cards let voters know when and how they can vote. Premier Danielle Smith announced last week that the byelection for Lethbridge-West would be held Dec. 18, to fill the vacancy that opened when former NDP legislature member Shannon Phillips resigned July 1. NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi had urged Smith to call the byelection earlier, as both NDP and the governing United Conservative Party candidates have been in place since September. Alberta Elections notes on its website that due to the Canada Post strike, "Where to Vote" cards will not be mailed to electors, and it warns that in the event of a continuing strike electors choosing to vote by special ballot may have to use other ways to send them in, such as a courier. NDP executive director Garett Spelliscy, in the letter, says that’s not good enough. He says the NDP wants Elections Alberta to conduct "robust voter outreach," which could include billboards, road signs, radio ads and a phone and text campaign. "Byelections tend to have lower voter turnout. The premier’s cynical decision for a winter election so close to Christmas and Hanukkah risks an even lower than typical turnout," Spelliscy said in the letter posted on social media late Monday. Spelliscy said a plan by Elections Alberta to issue social media posts and ads through the Lethbridge Herald newspaper "is constructive, but woefully inadequate." He noted seniors are less likely to access information through social media. The outcome of the byelection won’t affect the government, as the UCP currently has 49 seats in the 87-seat legislature compared with 37 for the NDP. The NDP candidate is Rob Miyashiro, while the UCP banner is carried by John Middleton-Hope. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 25, 2024. The Canadian Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump used his image as a successful New York businessman to become a celebrity, a reality television star and eventually the president. Now he will get to revel in one of the most visible symbols of success in the city when he rings the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday as he's also named Time Magazine's Person of the Year. Trump is expected to be on Wall Street to mark the ceremonial start of the day's trading, according to four people with knowledge of his plans. He will also be announced Thursday as Time's 2024 Person of the Year , according to a person familiar with the selection. The people who confirmed the stock exchange appearance and Time award were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. It will be a notable moment of twin recognitions for Trump, a born-and-bred New Yorker who at times has treated the stock market as a measure of public approval and has long-prized signifiers of his success in New York's business world and his appearances on the covers of magazines — especially Time. Trump was named the magazine's Person of the Year in 2016, when he was first elected to the White House. He had already been listed as a finalist for this year's award alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, X owner Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kate, the Princess of Wales. Time declined to confirm the selection ahead of Thursday morning's announcement. “Time does not comment on its annual choice for Person of the Year prior to publication,” a spokesperson for the magazine said Wednesday. The ringing of the bell is a powerful symbol of U.S. capitalism — and a good New York photo opportunity at that. Despite his decades as a New York businessman, Trump has never done it before. It was unclear whether Trump, a Republican, would meet with New York's embattled mayor, Democrat Eric Adams , who has warmed to Trump and has not ruled out changing his political party. Adams has been charged with federal corruption crimes and accused of selling influence to foreign nationals; he has denied wrongdoing. Trump himself was once a symbol of New York, but he gave up living full-time in his namesake Trump Tower in Manhattan and moved to Florida after leaving the White House. CNN first reported Wednesday Trump’s visit to the stock exchange and Politico reported that Trump was expected to be unveiled as Time's Person of the Year. The stock exchange regularly invites celebrities and business leaders to participate in the ceremonial opening and closing of trading. During Trump’s first term, his wife, Melania Trump, rang the bell to promote her “Be Best” initiative on children’s well-being. Last year, Time CEO Jessica Sibley rang the opening bell to unveil the magazine's 2023 Person of the Year: Taylor Swift . After the Nov. 5 election, the S&P 500 rallied 2.5% for its best day in nearly two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,508 points, or 3.6%, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%. All three indexes topped records they had set in recent weeks. The U.S. stock market has historically tended to rise regardless of which party wins the White House, with Democrats scoring bigger average gains since 1945. But Republican control could mean big shifts in the winning and losing industries underneath the surface, and investors are adding to bets built earlier on what the higher tariffs, lower tax rates and lighter regulation that Trump favors will mean. Trump has long courted the business community based on his own status as a wealthy real estate developer who gained additional fame as the star of the TV show “The Apprentice” in which competitors tried to impress him with their business skills. He won the election in part by tapping into Americans' deep anxieties about an economy that seemed unable to meet the needs of the middle class. The larger business community has applauded his promises to reduce corporate taxes and cut regulations. But there are also concerns about his stated plans to impose broad tariffs and possibly target companies that he sees as not aligning with his own political interests. Trump spends the bulk of his time at his Florida home but was in New York for weeks this spring during his hush money trial there. He was convicted, but his lawyers are pushing for the case to be thrown out in light of his election. While he spent hours in a Manhattan courthouse every day during his criminal trial, Trump took his presidential campaign to the streets of the heavily Democratic city, holding a rally in the Bronx and popping up at settings for working-class New Yorkers: a bodega, a construction site and a firehouse. Trump returned to the city in September to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Manhattan tower and again in the final stretch of the presidential campaign when he held a rally at Madison Square Garden that drew immediate blowback as speakers made rude and racist insults and incendiary remarks . At the stock exchange, the ringing of the bell has been a tradition since the 1800s. The first guest to do it was a 10-year-old boy named Leonard Ross, in 1956, who won a quiz show answering questions about the stock market. Many times, companies listing on the exchange would ring the bell at 9:30 a.m. to commemorate their initial offerings as trading began. But the appearances have become an important marker of culture and politics -- something that Trump hopes to seize as he’s promised historic levels of economic growth. The anti-apartheid advocate and South African President Nelson Mandela rang the bell, as has Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone with his castmates from the film “The Expendables.” So, too, have the actors Robert Downey Jr. and Jeremy Renner for an “Avengers” movie and the Olympians Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin. In 1985, Ronald Reagan became the first sitting U.S. president to ring the bell. “With tax reform and budget control, our economy will be free to expand to its full potential, driving the bears back into permanent hibernation,” Reagan said at the time. “We’re going to turn the bull loose.” The crowd of traders on the floor chanted, “Ronnie! Ronnie! Ronnie!” The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed in 1985 and 1986, but it suffered a decline in October 1987 in an event known as “Black Monday.” Long reported from Washington. Associated Press writer Josh Boak in Washington contributed to this report.

NoneVikings special teams coordinator Matt Daniels knows he can only hold on to young players who are developing as part of his unit for so long. Rookie linebacker Bo Richter is one Daniels is cherishing while he can. “He continues to excel in his role,” Daniels said Tuesday at TCO Performance Center. “Surely enough, this is usually how it goes. You just keep dominating, keep having an impact on special teams, and surely enough you’ll mature and ‘Coach Hat’ [Daniels’ nickname] will be sending you on your way to go do bigger and better things on defense. “And that’s where he’s heading.” Richter, a undrafted free agent signing out of Air Force, made one of a pair of standout positive special teams plays for the Vikings in their overtime win against the Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field. Those plays were negated by the Bears late in an 11-point comeback to tie the score in the final seconds of regulation. Richter, who the Vikings signed as an undrafted free agent this spring, fell on a muffed punt recovery in the third quarter to set up a five-play, 15-yard scoring drive. Chicago return man DeAndre Carter waved for teammates to move out of the way but was struck by the ball himself, allowing Richter to recover it and the Vikings to regain possession. The Vikings had two other punt recoveries off muffs earlier this season that led to no points. “I was just finally glad that we finally got a muffed punt,” Daniels said. “I was just praying and hoping that ball didn’t roll out of bounds. It was good for him to get on that.” Earlier, in the second quarter, Vikings defensive lineman Jerry Tillery blocked a 48-yard field-goal attempt by Cairo Santos. Brian Asamoah recovered and returned it 22 yards. Daniels said blocking field goals has been a post-practice emphasis in recent weeks, and he felt the line quickly got off the ball and was able to penetrate deep into the Bears backfield, making it easier for Tillery to get a hand on the ball. The special teams success dwindled late in the game, with the Vikings giving up two big plays on kickoffs to hand Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and company prime field position to tie the score. Carter made up for his earlier mistake with a 55-yard kickoff return that kick-started the Bears’ comeback. Daniels said the intent was for Parker Romo to boot the ball into or out of the end zone on the kickoff, but Romo slightly toeing it into shifting winds hung up the ball. Carter caught it inside the 5-yard line, took off just outside the left hash and shook off four defenders before being brought down by outside linebacker Dallas Turner at the Vikings’ 40-yard line. “At the end of the day, we just gotta do a great job of defeating blocks,” Daniels said. “That’s what it boils down to, and that starts with me making sure I’m emphasizing it during the week.” Then, after the Bears scored eight plays later and added a two-point conversion to make the score 27-24 with 29 seconds left, an onside kick by Santos hit the back of tight end Johnny Mundt’s foot and the Bears recovered. Santos’ 48-yard field goal as time expired sent the game to overtime. Some redemption for the special teams unit came when Romo nailed a 29-yard field goal to win the game in overtime; long snapper Jake McQuaide made sure to retrieve the winning ball for Romo amid the celebration. Daniels pointed out that Romo, who the Vikings signed Nov. 5 when starting kicker Will Reichard moved to injury reserve because of a quad injury, has been tested in his first few weeks of NFL action. “This is gonna be the first time he actually gets to hit indoors,” Daniels said of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals at U.S. Bank Stadium. “He’s hit basically three outside road games.”

For a tech-driven Pakistan Pakistan remains mired in what can only be described as a ‘Baby Boomer Syndrome’ As the modern world accelerates towards a future purely dominated by technology, digitisation, and innovation, Pakistan finds itself at a major crossroads. The US recently elected JD Vance as its vice-president, marking the arrival of millennial leadership in the White House. D D Eisenhower took the same step in 1952, bringing young and energetic Richard Nixon to the White House as VP – which ultimately brought John F Kennedy into the limelight in 1960. The progressive, innovative era of the US started with the ‘We will go to the moon’’ speech by JFK at Rice University. The current transition in the White House symbolises a shift away from Baby Boomer-dominated leadership, with even the Democratic Party expected to follow suit with younger candidates soon for the 2028 run. Pakistan, however, remains mired in what can only be described as a ‘Baby Boomer Syndrome’, with leadership from the same generation persisting since 1985. For nearly four decades, Pakistan has been governed by individuals disconnected from the demands of a rapidly changing world. The time has come for a fresh, energetic, dynamic and versatile approach that embraces younger leaders with modern education and a forward-looking mindset – someone like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who represents the millennial generation. Pakistan’s economic struggles are well documented. The solutions lie not in traditional remedies but in bold, innovative action. Globally, the tech sector has emerged as the most transformative force of the 21st century. India boasts over 100 unicorns, startups valued at over $1 billion, making it a hub of innovation. The UAE, with Dubai at the forefront, has established itself as a regional leader in blockchain, fintech, and artificial intelligence. Pakistan, on the other hand, has significant IT talent but has so far lagged in capitalising on its potential. Despite producing world-class engineers and programmers, Pakistan’s IT exports remain a modest $2.6 billion annually, far below what its talent pool could achieve. A balanced approach focusing on digital tax reforms, technology, and export diversification could provide sustainable solutions. Tax reform remains a critical priority. With an informal economy comprising over 35 per cent of GDP, Pakistan’s tax base is narrow and inefficient. Digitising tax collection, broadening the tax base, and addressing chronic evasion and corruption could significantly boost state revenues. This, in turn, could fund investments in critical sectors like technology and infrastructure. Similarly, Pakistan’s energy sector is a significant drag on the economy, costing billions annually due to inefficiencies and theft. Investing in renewable energy and privatising loss-making state-owned enterprises would create fiscal space for more productive ventures. Pakistan’s most significant opportunities lie in the digital economy. The global IT sector is booming, and Pakistan has the potential to emerge as a major player. The country already ranks among the top five in the world for freelance services, with young entrepreneurs leveraging platforms like Upwork and Fiverr. However, these efforts are fragmented and lack the government support needed to scale up. Establishing tech hubs modelled on Dubai’s success could transform Pakistan into a regional leader in technology and innovation. Tech innovation is not just a choice but a necessity. A genius like Warren Buffet, known for his financial acumen, initially overlooked technology. However, he later recognised its importance and invested in Apple, now one of the world’s most valuable companies. Giants like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon – members of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ – were once small startups but have grown into trillion-dollar entities, shaping the global economy. Pakistan must foster an environment that allows its tech startups to grow similarly, moving beyond survival to becoming global leaders. Dubai’s rise as a tech hub offers a blueprint for Pakistan. Over the last two decades, Dubai has invested heavily in creating a startup-friendly ecosystem, attracting global talent, and fostering public-private partnerships. Pakistan could replicate this model by developing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) focused on technology. These zones could offer tax incentives, simplified regulations, and access to venture capital, creating an environment where startups can thrive. Collaboration with the UAE could further accelerate this process, establishing a regional tech corridor. Leadership will be key to this transformation. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, with his broader political acumen at a young age, and being Western-educated, is uniquely positioned to lead Pakistan into the technological future. Unlike Baby Boomer leaders who rely on outdated methods, Bilawal’s understanding of technology and global trends could drive investments in the tech sector and encourage innovation. He could champion initiatives like a national startup fund, tech education programmes, and policies that attract international investors. Pakistan’s reliance on traditional industries like agriculture and textiles has limited its growth potential. While these sectors remain important, they cannot drive the kind of economic expansion needed to compete globally. Moving beyond textiles, which account for over 60 per cent of exports, Pakistan must focus on sectors like IT services, engineering, and pharmaceuticals. Startups like Airlift and Bykea have already demonstrated the potential of the local market. However, they face significant challenges, including limited access to venture capital and inadequate infrastructure. Addressing these issues could pave the way for a thriving startup ecosystem, turning Pakistan into a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. India’s success provides valuable lessons. The country’s robust tech ecosystem was built on policies that encouraged entrepreneurship, offered tax breaks for startups, and simplified regulations. By replicating these strategies and tailoring them to local needs, Pakistan could foster a similar environment. Pakistan’s young, digitally savvy population – over 60 per cent of the population is under 30 – represents a demographic dividend waiting to be tapped. However, this requires investment in digital literacy, infrastructure, and skills training. Tourism and cultural exports also offer significant revenue potential. Pakistan’s rich heritage and natural beauty remain underutilised assets. Simplifying visa processes and promoting eco-tourism could attract millions of international visitors. Similarly, exporting Pakistani films, dramas, and music could generate revenue while enhancing the country’s global image. Our trade policy also requires a strategic overhaul. Pakistan must actively negotiate trade agreements with ASEAN, the EU, and African markets to diversify its export destinations. Import substitution policies, focusing on local production of high-demand items like electronics and pharmaceuticals, could reduce reliance on imports and strengthen the domestic economy. Green bonds to fund renewable energy projects and the promotion of cultural exports can also generate revenue while positioning Pakistan as a forward-thinking nation. Pakistan’s economic recovery demands more than incremental changes; it requires bold, innovative action. Younger leaders with modern perspectives, like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, have the vision needed to embrace technology, foster entrepreneurship, and create a dynamic, future-ready economy. The world is rapidly moving toward a new era defined by quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. Pakistan cannot afford to be left behind. The time has come to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders who can guide the country into this new era, ensuring prosperity and growth for decades to come. For the past 14 years, Alex Vynokur, the co-founder of Betashares, has quietly built his company into one of the largest local providers of exchange-traded funds and one of the country’s fastest growing asset managers. In 2024, Betashares attracted inflows of $16 billion, lifting its total funds under management to $46 billion. “The focus for the past decade has very much been about building out the core ETF capability,” explains Vynokur. “We are now a steward of significant capital on behalf of more than 1 million Australian investors and over two-thirds of financial advisors.” Betashares now accounts for one-third of every dollar that goes into the Australian ETF industry, according to Vynokur, and is eyeing growth in Asia. Alex Vynokur, the chief executive of Betashares. Credit: Louie Douvis An ETF is a basket of securities that are pooled into one fund, which is traded on a stock exchange. An investor in an ETF doesn’t own the securities, instead owning units in the ETF, while the ETF provider owns the shares or assets. ETFs have grown in popularity with investors because they are cost-effective and offer exposure to thousands of diversified assets, such as a group of defence stocks, or the ASX200 index, or a variety of bonds. Globally, ETFs have had a banner year with more than $1 trillion invested into the sector, which is now worth an estimated $14 trillion. Vynokur and his family arrived in Australia from Ukraine more than three decades ago, at the time when ETFs launched. He was a teenager, and his family came with just a few hundred dollars in their pockets. Vynokur became a lawyer, then moved into venture capital, before co-founding Betashares with David Nathanson, also a former lawyer and investment banker, who had worked at Goldman Sachs and Macquarie. We’re definitely, very cautiously, studying opportunities outside of Australia. Alex Vynokur, Betashares co-founder As with any start-up, Vynokur and Nathanson put in enormous hours to build the company to where it is today, as Australia’s second-largest ETF provider behind market leader Vanguard. Both are now multi-millionaires, though there has been a physical cost, says 46-year-old Vynokur: “I didn’t have any grey hair 14 years ago.” The pay-off for both as come in the past few years. In 2021, private equity group TA Associates became Betashares’ majority shareholder, with at least 53.5 per cent ownership. In the middle of this year, Singapore’s Temasek, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, bought a minority stake. Temasek paid $300 million for that shareholding, the size of which was undisclosed. The deal ascribed a multi-billion-dollar valuation to Betashares. It was Temasek’s first investment in a financial services business in Australia. In a global portfolio valued at $S389 billion ($459 billion), Temasek has just over half invested in private assets. “They have invested with the objective of maybe having more ownership,” says Vynokur. “We’re building this business for the long term, and they are genuinely interested in long-term value creation. We’ve never been about building something up quickly and flogging it. It doesn’t mean I’m opposed to being listed one day, but we’re definitely not in a hurry to go down that path.” The proceeds are expected to help fund Betashares’ growth into new products. In the past year, the company launched retail investment platform Betashares Direct and bought a superannuation business from Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. Vynokur also believes that Betashares has more room to expand its main ETF business. Loading “According to the ASX data, there are 8 million Australians who invest outside their superannuation,” he says. “Also, if you think about younger Australians, who are locked out of the property ownership game, you know being smart with money outside of property is absolutely crucial. We have a real role to play in that.” There is also the opportunity for Betashares to expand its ETF business into Asia but, as for a priority, Vynokur won’t nominate a country. “We’re definitely, very cautiously, studying opportunities outside of Australia ... and that’s going to form part of our longer-term growth.” The Business Briefing newsletter delivers major stories, exclusive coverage and expert opinion. Ansys Report Highlights Simulation’s Role in Improving Sustainability Across Industries – including fast-charging batteries and hydrogen fuel cell PITTSBURGH, Dec. 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — (NASDAQ: ) today for using simulation to measure and assess the sustainability impact of decisions made during early design stages and throughout the product life cycle. The report incorporates research and analytical support from McKinsey & Co detailing how this methodology was used at Danfoss Drives, Infineon, and Mars. Findings show that, in some cases, these companies reduced direct, indirect, and/or downstream GHG emissions across the product life cycle by at least 10% using Ansys simulation solutions. Sustainability is a key global business priority driven by regulatory pressures, consumer demand, and climate change. However, lack of robust data on material usage, power consumption, waste, and emission generation often prevents companies from embracing large-scale sustainability initiatives. Ansys simulation enables businesses across industries to respond to these market challenges with agility and can help support sustainability efforts. For instance, after identifying an ideal design, customers can further optimize it to meet their specific sustainability goals, such as reducing waste generation, improving energy efficiency, and lowering the overall carbon footprint. Ansys simulation helps companies predict return on investment for sustainability initiatives through virtual prototyping, process optimization, and high-fidelity results via four sustainability-focused solutions pillars: In addition, the report outlines a four-step methodology to clearly identify how simulation positively impacts sustainability efforts: 1) Identify and prioritize key metrics; 2) Evaluate and rank initiatives; 3) Assess simulation’s contributions, and 4) Quantify and aggregate impact. For example, Danfoss Drives, a global leader in energy-efficient solutions, used Ansys simulation to optimize its latest generation drive controller — used in various applications to manage the speed, torque, and power of electric motors. Using the Ansys methodology, Danfoss Drives determined simulation helped make the drive more efficient, contributing to a reduction in lifetime energy consumption of up to 45% compared to the previous generation — double what could have been achieved without simulation. head of virtual design, test & optimization at Danfoss Drives, said : “With simulation, we can improve our product design processes by enabling rapid, thorough analysis, faster decision-making, and emissions estimates. The data we capture is critical to shaping our current processes, helps us identify opportunities for cost savings, and ultimately opens the door to technological advancement and innovation.” The methodology also helped Infineon, a global leader in semiconductor and system solutions, measure the total electrical losses of an electric vehicle inverter design. Using simulation, Infineon cut the total electrical losses by 50%, reducing downstream emissions by 2-3% per vehicle. Moreover, Mars, a leader in snacking, food, and pet care products and services is using Ansys simulation to redesign more than 12,000 packaging types across its portfolio and has reduced plastic use by 246 tons in 2024. , Partner at McKinsey, said : “The four-step methodology laid out in this report clearly shows how to identify the most relevant opportunities to leverage simulation for driving sustainability in engineering and product design and also quantify their impact. This is critical for achieving an even larger contribution to sustainability targets from using simulation tools.” chief technology officer and executive sponsor of Ansys’ sustainability programs, said : “Addressing climate change and reducing global emissions depends on how fast we act. Ansys’ leading solutions empower customers to develop innovative and sustainable products more efficiently and in significantly less time, ensuring compliance with current regulatory standards and preparing companies for future regulations.” To learn more about the Ansys methodology for using simulation to drive sustainability, read the full report and at the Las Vegas Convention Center, West Hall, Booth #6400. the latest news shaping the hydrogen market at Ansys Report Highlights Simulation’s Role in Improving Sustainability Across Industries – including fast-charging batteries and hydrogen fuel cell, Worley and ExxonMobil agree EPC terms for USA low-carbon hydrogen project Worley will provide reimbursable Engineering, Procurement and Construction services (EPC) to ExxonMobil for the Enabling Works, Infrastructure... John McNulty has described as ‘sad’ the loss of a Fine Gael TD in Donegal for the first time since 1937. Both McNulty and his running mate Senator Nikki Bradley failed to impress at the polls. The duo managed to take just 9% of the overall vote leaving them trailing well behind Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail. Speaking with Donegal Daily , the Kilcar man admitted that the combined vote of the two Fine Gael candidates may have made an impact. Watch the full interview here:

Black Friday may be officially over but the tablet deals are still ticking along. So I've flagged a whole clutch of them, and these might just be... the best tablet deals... in the world. How would I know? Well I've been covering Black Friday deals for more years than I care to remember; I'm also an enthusiastic tablet user, so you trust me that I'll flag deals to you not duds. • See all of today's deals Furthermore, a lot of the tablet featured below can be found on our best tablets guide, so they are great at full price and now even better with a neat discount. So let's get cracking; read on for the best tablet deals in the US and UK. I've been covering tablets for years, having spent more than a decade in technology journalism. Plus as the editorial manager of the Mobile Computing and Deals verticals at TechRadar, I'm not short of knowledge in what's a good device and what's a good deal, ready to recommend the best products and bargains to you, dear reader. Today's best tablet deals in the US Amazon : save $100 on the 11-inch iPad Air 2024 Best Buy : save on iPads and Android tablets Best Buy : save $400 on the 11-inch iPad Pro Samsung: Save $200 plus on the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra Target : save on the Galaxy Tab A9 Plus & Apple iPads Target : save $100 on the iPad 9th Generation Walmart : save on loads of iPads There’s a massive up to $1,000 to be saved on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra when you combine an upfront $200 discount and up to $800 trade-in rebate for your existing tablet. The newest high-end Samsung slate has great features for productivity like Circle to Search with Google and Note Assist. There are also AI-assisted tools like the ability to turn a sketch into a full image. Up to 16 hours of battery life and a neat S Pen stylus prove useful. Up to $300 off one of Samsung's best budget tablets is a superb deal. The 10.9-inch display is ideal for portability and with incredibly long battery life the Tab S9 FE will keep going all day, even when pushed to its limits. There's 128GB of storage, which provides enough room to store all your apps, although you can upgrade to 256 GB if you need extra space. We've seen Samsung offer a $100 upfront discount on this device before but today's trade-in rebate of up to $400 is a record-low. With $70 off the original price, the OnePlus Pad 2 is a bit of a bargain for a rather powerful and capable Android tablet. For the price, you get a 12.1-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and 67W fast charging; not bad for a tablet now under $500. Best Buy has discounted the 256GB iPad 10.2 (2021) – also known as the iPad 9th-generation. Despite its age, this iPad offers a gorgeous 10.2-inch screen with True Tone technology, decent battery life (we got around 10 hours in our testing), and it'll also continue to be supported with software updates until at least 2027. Put simply, the iPad 10.2 (2021) is the best iPad if you're on a budget. Apple's previous-gen iPad mini is a fantastic all-rounder. Its powerful A15 Bionic chip delivers all the performance most people need, while the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display is small enough to make the device beautifully portable. The mini's display has True Tone support, P3 wide color, and ultra-low reflectivity, so it looks great wherever you're using it. Walmart's $110 discount is impressive, though we have seen this iPad as low as $349.99 at Amazon previously. Amazon's Black Friday sale has knocked a welcome $50 off the price of the brand-new, M4-powered iPad mini. You'll have to choose the Space Gray model for the maximum saving, though smaller discounts are also available on the other color variants. In our Apple iPad mini A17 Pro (2024) review , we praised the new tablet's "pocket-friendly design" and "ability to support Apple Intelligence." Apple slashed the recommended starting price of the iPad 10.9 (2022) to $349 earlier this year, but Amazon has now dropped that figure even further, to a record-low $259. In our iPad 10.9 (2022) review , we said Apple's latest base-level tablet is a big upgrade over the previous generation model, offering a larger Liquid Retina display, a new A14 Bionic chip, improved cameras, USB-C support, and a sleek design. Getting $100 off a tablet that could double as a laptop is not bad at all. This iPad Pro features a high-resolution Liquid Retina XDR display, strong battery life, and 256GB of storage. These specs are impressive already but when paired with the latest M4 chip you get a tablet that is truly special indeed. The power makes it possible to effortlessly perform even the most demanding of tasks, including photo and video editing as well as gaming. If the Amazon deal above is sold out or over, then Walmart's $924 deal on the new iPad Pro is still worth a look. In our iPad Pro (2024) review (albeit for the 13-inch model), we describe Apple's latest flagship tablet as "the impossibly thin king of iPads – and maybe all tablets." Naturally, that level of quality comes at a premium, but Black Friday season is a great time to snag a discount. If you want the biggest and best iPad, Amazon has the iPad Pro 13-inch (2024) on sale right now. It's a mighty tablet and one that's all the more attractive with $200 off its price tag. For just over $1,000 you get the mighty M4 chip, a large Liquid Retina XDR display, and 256GB of onboard storage, though if you need more then the 512GB iPad Pro also has $200 off at Amazon . You can save a cool $100 on the latest 256GB iPad Air over at Amazon. Nearly $600 isn't cheap for an iPad but it does next you a beautiful Liquid Retina display, a MacBook-level M2 chipset, a landscape-oriented front-facing camera, and landscape stereo speakers with spatial audio. If you want extra screen space, you can go for the iPad Air 13-inch (M2) instead. As well as being available at its lowest price yet, it has the same processing power as the 11-inch model. All the nice extras and useful features are included, too, as well as that larger display. If you need more of a laptop replacement, this is the right size for you. Add on a Magic Keyboard for the most convenience. To compliment an 11-inch iPad Pro or iPad Air, Apple's Magic Keyboard offers a smart combination of keyboard, trackpad, and tilting stand to transform an iPad into a pseudo computer. It's an essential accessory for people who want to be productive on Apple's tablets, and with $59 off it's more appealing than ever. Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite is always a best seller at holiday sales, and today's Black Friday deal brings the price down to a new record low. The waterproof e-reader features a large 7-inch glare-free display, a battery that lasts for weeks, and a single charge that lasts up to 12 weeks. Kindle ereaders are always popular deals during Black Friday, and I predict this discount on Amazon's all-new model will go fast. Amazon's latest Kindle was just released this month, and you can find a first-time discount, which brings the price down to $89.99. The 2024 Kindle is Amazon's lightest and most compact e-reader and features a six-inch glare-free display and a battery life that lasts six weeks. Today's best tablet deals in the UK Amazon : save more than £70 on the OnePlus Pad Amazon : 10% or more off a range of iPads Argos : last-gen iPad mini for £449 Argos : grab some more early tablet deals Currys : big deals on Samsung Galaxy tablets Currys : save £30 on the 13-inch iPad Air John Lewis : up to £430 off the 2022 iPad Pro range Samsung: save 5% on app purchases over £400 with this Samsung Black Friday voucher code Very: 10% off electricals when using this Very voucher code Box: exclusive £20 Off when you spend £400 or more by entering this BOX UK promo code Not the cheapest we've seen this older iPad drop to but Laptops Direct has discounted the iPad 10.2 (2021) – also known as the iPad 9th-generation – to £239, a reasonable price for a tablet with a gorgeous 10.2-inch screen with True Tone technology, decent battery life (we got around 10 hours in our testing), and slick software. In simple terms, the iPad 10.2 (2021) is the best iPad if you're on a budget. Over on Amazon, you can get a 256GB 2022 iPad for £429. Now that's not a huge discount, but it's a saving that's enough to load the iPad with some premium apps and games. As you'll see in our our iPad 10.9 (2022) review , it's an Apple tablet well worth your attention. Apple slashed the recommended starting price of the iPad 10.9 (2022) to £349 earlier this year, but John Lewis has cut that number even further to £289. FOr an entry-level iPad that a larger Liquid Retina display, a new A14 Bionic chip, improved cameras, USB-C support, and refreshed design, that's a good price. Amazon's Black Friday sale has knocked a welcome £30 off the price of the brand-new, M4-powered iPad mini. This small-but-welcome saving applies to all color variants, and the 256GB model has been discounted, too. In our Apple iPad mini A17 Pro (2024) review , we praised the new tablet's "pocket-friendly design" and "ability to support Apple Intelligence." Even if you can find the previous-gen iPad mini on sale for cheaper than £469, we think this new model is the better, more future-proof buy. The new iPad Air is the closest thing you can get to an iPad Pro without having to pay upwards of £1,000, which is why we believe it's the best iPad for students in 2024. For almost half the price of Apple's professional-grade iPad, you'll get a beautiful Liquid Retina display, a MacBook-level M2 chipset, a landscape-oriented front-facing camera, and landscape stereo speakers with spatial audio. Granted, this Amazon deal isn't a great one, but £559 is still the best price you'll find for the new iPad Air (well, it's technically tied with Very and John Lewis ). In our iPad Pro (2024) review (albeit for the 13-inch model), we describe Apple's latest flagship tablet as "the impossibly thin king of iPads – and maybe all tablets." Naturally, that level of quality comes at a premium, but EE has seen fit to discount the 256GB, Wi-Fi-only variant of the 11-inch iPad Pro (2024) to a slightly more digestible price ahead of Black Friday. Not even Amazon is offering this price right now. If you want the biggest and best iPad, both Amazon and John Lewis have the iPad Pro 13-inch (2024) on sale right now. It's a mighty tablet and one that's all the more attractive with a chunk of change off its price tag (even if this isn't the greatest deal in the world). The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has been cut by £300 making it a bit of an Android tablet bargain. It features Samsung's most powerful tablet processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, with AI capabilities incorporated into its system. The latest Vision Booster technology also supports a brilliant display that automatically adjusts brightness and contrast based on your environment. The basic Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 is down to an impressively low price at Currys for Black Friday – though I have seen it £15 cheaper in the past. This basic tablet has an entry-level processor, a small 8.6-inch screen and only 64GB of storage so expect slightly slower performance and struggles with games or multitasking, but it's still a great tablet for light mobile computing. Over on Argos, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 can also be had for £129, which is good if the Currys deal has sold out. It's the cheapest the Tab A9 has dropped at Argos, so do go and check it out. At under £500, the OnePlus Pad 2 is a bit of a bargain for a rather powerful and capable Android tablet. For the price, you get a 12.1-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and 67W fast charging; not bad for a tablet now under $500. Here's a super-cheap Lenovo tablet deal in the Black Friday sales at Amazon. It's getting older now and the spec is lightweight but if you just need an affordable device for everyday jobs, watching videos and light use this will be up to the task. This Honor Pad 9 is an affordable and versatile 12.1-inch tablet that does it all. It'll serve you well as a device for watching videos and browsing the web, while also comfortably handling light work and admin tasks - especially with a handy Bluetooth keyboard included for free. Expect reasonable overall performance, an impressive 13-hour battery life, a smooth display and decent storage at 256GB. Overall, there isn't a better budget tablet deal out there right now. Amazon's all-new Kindle Paperwhite is on sale for the first time since launch this Black Friday. Previous versions have been reduced to under £100 in the past, but it's unlikely we'll ever see an offer like that again on this upgraded version. We found in our Kindle Paperwhite review that it's packed with features to suit all avid readers, including an improved 12-week battery life, a larger glare-free 7-inch screen, adjustable warm light and storage space for thousands of books. The newest version of the standard Kindle is now on sale for the first time ever as part of the Black Friday sale at Amazon. It's a basic ereader, but it still boasts a six-week battery life and space for thousands of books. Given it's £45 cheaper than the Paperwhite, this is clearly a better pick for the infrequent reader after a more budget-friendly option. It's still a solid option, though, with a 6-inch glare-free display, fast page turns and an adjustable front light to help you read in all environments.big fish casino ios

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s false claims linking autism to childhood vaccinations are receiving new scrutiny now that President-elect Donald Trump has selected him to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, a sprawling agency with a budget of $1.7 trillion that oversees research into both autism and vaccines. The myth that autism is caused by childhood vaccines — proposed in 1998 by a British doctor who was later banned from practicing medicine in the United Kingdom — has been thoroughly debunked . Hundreds of studies have found vaccines to be safe . The World Health Organization estimates that over the past 50 years, immunizations have saved 154 million lives around the world. Kennedy, who espouses a number of health-related conspiracy theories , has pointed to vaccines to explain the substantial rise in autism diagnoses in recent decades, which have ballooned from an estimated 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 36 today. Research suggests that much of that increase is due to increasing awareness and screening for the condition; changing definitions of autism to include milder conditions on the spectrum that weren’t recognized in previous years; as well as advances in diagnostic technology. “For a very long time, the anti-vaccine movement has been exploiting families of autistic people, promoting a market for pseudo-scientific treatments that don’t provide the answers they’re looking for and that can expose autistic people to real harm,” said Ari Ne’eman, co-founder of the nonprofit Autistic Self Advocacy Network and an assistant professor of health policy and management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “More discredited conspiracy theories linking autism and vaccines are not the answer.” Timothy Caulfield, research director at the University of Alberta’s Health Law Institute in Canada, who studies health misinformation, said that people often are more willing to believe conspiracy theories about conditions such as autism, whose causes are complex and not fully understood, than diseases with clear causes. People seem less inclined to speculate, for example, about alternative explanations for Down syndrome, which causes intellectual disabilities and has long been known to be caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. “It’s really a shame because there are vulnerable families [of people with autism] who need our support,” said Judith Miller, a clinical psychologist and senior scientist and training director at the Center for Autism Research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Every dollar and hour spent trying to debunk a conspiracy theory is a dollar and an hour lost that could have been spent trying to understand how to help families.” Finding the causes of autism is complicated, because it’s not a single disorder, said Manish Arora, a professor of environmental medical and climate science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. “Autism is a spectrum, not a single narrow disease,” Arora said. “It’s many, many things under one umbrella.” Although people diagnosed with autism often have similar strengths and challenges, “there are many paths to autism and many presentations of autism,” Miller said. Scientists have found a variety of risk factors for autism — most of which exist before birth — but there is no single cause for a neurological and developmental condition that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave. A number of the traits sometimes seen in people with autism — such as being sensitive to loud noises, for example, or finding it difficult to interpret social cues — are also found in people who have not been diagnosed with autism. Doctors diagnose autism based on a person’s behavior, noting that there is no simple test for the condition, as there is for Covid or diabetes, said Arora, founder and CEO of a start-up company that researches biomarkers for autism and other neurological conditions. Finding the cause of an infectious disease — such as influenza, which is caused by the flu virus — is much more straightforward. While researchers continue to study the factors that influence the development of autistic traits, “the one thing we know doesn’t cause autism is vaccines,” said Catherine Lord, a psychologist and researcher at the Center for Autism Research and Treatment at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Doctors have long known that genes play a large role in autism, simply by noting that autism can run in families. For example, in identical twins — who share all of their DNA — if one twin has autism, the other usually does, as well. In the case of fraternal twins — who share about half their DNA — if one fraternal twin has autism, the chance that the other will have autism ranges from 53% to 67%, according to an analysis of research studies. Scientists have identified more than 100 genes related to autism, Miller said, and genes are believed to play a role in 60% to 80% of cases. “The genetics of autism have never been better understood,” said Dr. Gregory Cejas, medical director of the Autism Clinical Center and Fragile X Clinic at the Washington University School of Medicine. “We’re making leaps and bounds about known genetic causes of autism.” Yet genes clearly don’t explain every case of autism. Autism is very different from conditions like sickle cell anemia or cystic fibrosis, which are caused by a single gene. Scientists believe that people develop autistic traits due to a combination of genetic vulnerability and environmental exposures, Lord said. “People have found many, many different genetic patterns associated with autism, but none of them are only associated with autism and none of them are always associated with autism,” Lord said. For example, fragile X syndrome — caused by a mutated gene on the X chromosome — is the most common known cause of autism. But only a fraction of children with the genetic mutation actually develop autism, Miller said. It’s possible that this mutation leaves some people more vulnerable to developing autistic characteristics, while others with the same mutations don’t develop autistic traits, because they are shielded by protective factors that have not yet been identified. Some people blamed the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine with autism because symptoms of the condition often occur at around 12 to 15 months of age, the same time toddlers get that immunization. But Miller notes that “most of the genetic conditions that affect our life and health aren’t apparent at birth. Symptoms or characteristics won’t show up until later, but the genetic code will have been with us the whole time.” Many of the known risk factors for autistic characteristics occur before birth or at the time of delivery, Arora said. Babies who experience complications at birth , such as their umbilical cord becoming wrapped around their neck, have a higher risk of autism. So do babies born prematurely , perhaps because of something that happened in the womb. Children are also slightly more likely to be diagnosed with autism if they have older fathers and possibly if they have older mothers, Miller said. It’s not clear if something in the biology of older parents causes a child to have a higher risk of autism, or if socioeconomic issues could play a role. It’s possible that older parents have better access to health care, making it more likely for their child to receive an autism diagnosis. A mother’s health influences her child’s autism risk in several ways, according to multiple studies: Children have a greater chance of being diagnosed with autism if their mothers were exposed to high levels of air pollution or developed a serious infection , such as the flu or pneumonia, while pregnant. While Ne’eman, of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, said he’s not opposed to basic biological research on autism or its causes, he said those studies do little to help people with autism overcome the barriers they face in their everyday lives. He notes that only 8.4% of the $419 million spent on autism research in the United States is devoted to support and services for people with autism. “We need an autism research agenda,” he said, “that reflects the true priorities of autistic people and our families: supports across the lifespan and inclusion in the community.” This article first appeared on NBCNews.com .
