Raila Odinga, whose bid to become Kenya’s president failed five times, may soon have a better alternative and finally bestride the whole of Africa. If he’s lucky this time around and everything goes according to plan, he will this coming February walk in the light of the grandiose halls of the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa as the new chairman of the continent. Such a win, which is at this point a possibility, not a certainty, would be Raila’s redeeming victory and could serve as the capstone to his long career. Raila’s leadership will also be a win for Kenya and for President William Ruto, whose government has rallied behind his candidacy in the stiff contest over the continent’s top seat. President William Ruto has officially endorsed Raila ‘as the most suitable person’ to become African Union’s chairman. He said he is ‘confident that he (Raila) will give his utmost and do all it takes to make Africa proud and powerful’. He called him the ‘most capable steward’. Ruto lauded Raila as a ‘visionary Pan-African, a bold and wise leader, a professional and technocrat, as well as a towering statesman and veteran mobiliser for positive change’. He said his government ‘unreservedly’ lines up behind Raila, whom he said ‘posses the requisite credentials’ and was committed to supporting his candidacy, vision and his leadership ‘wholeheartedly’. Raila’s good chance Other government officials were also effusive in their praise for Raila’s capacity to shepherd the continent. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi who doubles up as the Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary, described Raila a ‘peacemaker’ and ‘one of our most celebrated sons’. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Singoei said there was no better name (in Kenya) to present to Africa than Raila. Despite the prevailing national self-flagellation and the unstinting critique by some online users about Raila’s AU candidacy, the team running the campaign for the opposition leader, who is also the East African region’s candidate, is optimistic. At least 20 countries are already considered as ‘very likely’ to vote for him and efforts to win over another 20 are in high gear, said Ambassador Elkanah Odembo, who co-chairs the campaign secretariat with Singoei. “Our goal is to secure the two-thirds majority (required to win the seat) in the first round of the voting,” he told The Standard . A candidate has to get 34 votes to win. Odembo said he couldn’t name the countries that are sympathetic to Raila because the February vote would be cast in a secret ballot by the continent’s heads of state. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter But, there’s are early good signs, although it’s too early to draw conclusions and many things can change in the last minute. President William Ruto said the island nation of Mauritius, which initially fielded its own candidate, had ‘confirmed’ its support for Kenya’s candidate, Raila. Port Louis has since written to the AU’s Office of Legal Council in Addis to say that it no longer supports its candidate, but there was no confirmed information whether it had in fact withdrawn its candidate, Odembo said. Mauritius’s support came after President Ruto held a telephone conversation with the newly elected Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. What happens in coming weeks, however, will be crucial. Fawzia Yusuf Adam, former Foreign Affairs minister of Somalia, who quit the race for AU Commission chair and declared her support for Raila Odinga, pledged to use her networks to ensure the former Prime Minister wins the contest on first round of voting. [File, Standard] Public debate On Friday, December 13, Raila is expected to take part in a public debate that the AU is hosting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The remaining candidates for the chairperson position, Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato, were invited to the debate, which will be moderated by African journalists and broadcast live on public TV stations in all the 54 member states of the African Union. The debate will be translated into six languages spoken in the continent. The Kenyan campaign team “is upbeat, but it’s leaving nothing to chance,” said Odembo, admitting that one of the challenges facing Raila is reaching voters, who are in this case the heads of state. “It is all very labor intensive and requires a lot of travels,” he said. Raila has recently visited six countries in West Africa to seek their support. The foreign trip was a part of a grueling schedule he has been keeping since he officially announced his desire to vie for the AU’s chairmanship earlier this year. According to Odembo, Raila spends between two to six hours at his AU campaign office getting updates, making calls to various influencers around the continent and conferring with members of his 16-member advisory council. In a departure from Kenya’s 2017 AU campaign that was faulted for its poor strategy and little knowledge of the continent’s complexities, Raila’s team is tapping into the expertise of local and foreign experts, including Mahboub Maalim, former executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), former AU chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Kenya’s former Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and former candidate for the AU chairperson, Amina Mohamed, Somalia’s former Foreign Minister Fauzia Yusuf Haji Aden, a one time Raila’s rival for the AU position, and Frederic Ngoga, AU’s senior adviser on international partnerships. “We take this assignment very seriously and have entrusted it to our most capable steward,” Ruto said during the unveiling of Raila Odinga’s candidacy at State House on August 27. Ruto said Raila embodied ‘extensive experience and deep understanding of both African affairs and global dynamics, which are crucial for leading the African Union further into the centre of the global affairs and closer to the hearts of the African people’. “Our East African region, which is home to more than 500 million people rightly considers this moment to be its turn to offer leadership on the basis of the principle of inter-regional rotation,” said President Ruto. Raila’s campaign secretariat is made up of officials drawn from the office of the president, foreign affairs ministry and his own advisers. Ruto said this ‘pan-African moment’ must define the member states’ collective capacity to solve Africa’s various crises and turn its potential into ‘engines of sustainable growth and inclusive prosperity for present and future generations’. Ruto has a personal reason to root for Raila. A Raila chairmanship will be a windfall for him, as it will take the opposition supremo out of contention for the 2027 elections, which Ruto is certain to vie for. Raila could also bequeath his supporters to Ruto, although the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has recently said it would field its own candidates in all elective positions. Any new AU chairman will have the daunting task of tackling Africa’s multifarious ills: Poverty, debilitating debt, insecurity, poor education and lack of access to electricity and proper health, among others. According to World Bank figures, the number of people living in extreme poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa has increased by almost 200 million, rising from 282 million in 1990 to 464 million in 2024, with Burundi and Malawi, for instance, suffering extreme poverty levels that are above 60 per cent. The bank says 40 per cent or more of the population is deprived of access to electricity and sanitation. For its part, the African Development Bank said in its 2024 report that around 85 per cent of the continent’s 1.4 billion people either live in or share land borders with a conflict-affected country, and key drivers of fragility—abject poverty, youth unemployment, and adverse climate change effects are increasing across the continent. To fix Africa’s problems, the continental body came up with Agenda 2063, whose aim is to transform Africa into a global powerhouse through inclusive social and sustainable economic development, continental integration, democratic governance and peace and security, among other issues. Ruto has a personal reason to root for Raila. A Raila chairmanship will be a windfall for him, as it will take the opposition supremo out of contention for the 2027 elections, which Ruto is certain to vie for. New dynamics in Africa Raila’s candidacy is facing its biggest threat from the Djiboutian candidate who has the backing of Muslim and Arab countries in the continent. He is likely to benefit from the new dynamics in Africa, where pan-Africanism is increasing and attempts to shed the legacies of the past, which has so far toppled several governments in West Africa, a stark contrast to a time when Europeans, especially the UK and France, deeply influenced internal and external affairs of African states. “In the honorable Raila, we have a compact and complete leadership package that is founded on teamwork, boldness in decision making, pan-Africanism and responsiveness to the collective and unique aspirations of each member state of the African Union,” Mudavadi told AU’s permanent representatives and international partners at a luncheon held in Addis Ababa. Raila’s vision for Africa In a speech during the launch of his manifesto in Addis Ababa, the seat of the AU, Raila talked of unity, open skies, reliable infrastructure, agricultural transformation, empowering youth and women, and making free trade in the continent a reality. He also promised to implement decisions made by African leaders during their summits, which is currently a bureaucratic talking shop where resolutions are hardly acted upon. “I can tell you without fear of contradiction that 93 per cent of these resolutions, which are passed here are never implemented,” Raila told diplomats and other dignitaries, vowing that he would make sure that they are ‘properly implemented’. Raila said he would push for the removal of aerial barriers in Africa, where each country has its own air control and travel through the continent is more expensive than it’s in Europe. “In Africa, you have to wait days to be given a clearance,” he said, recounting two instances when he was held up in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, for hours to get a clearance from several countries before he could fly to his destinations. “These are self-imposed restrictions on our continent,” he said, adding that removing the intra-Africa air restrictions is a ‘lower hanging fruit’ that could be harvested ‘without a problem’. He said these barriers in Africa ‘make us look stupid’. “Europe has become a village. Why can’t we do that in Africa?” he posed, pledging to introduce an Africa-wide visa, like the Schengen visa in Europe. He termed Africa’s youth the ‘biggest asset’ in the continent, where about 70 per cent of its population is below the age of 25. “This can be an asset or can be a challenge,” he sai, adding, “Because if the youth are not empowered, they can become a drag on the economy. They become drug addicts.” Raila said he would put the youth at the center of his policies and make them the force driving change and innovation. “It’s a big shame that we’re losing young, energetic people because of poverty in our continent,” said Raila,79. The solution lies in creating proper economic opportunities inside the continent, so that the youth could stay in their countries, he said. “I envision a continent whose progress is driven by its own people,” Raila said, urging Africans to ‘imagine Africa as a continent bursting with potential and brimming with possibilities’. The chairperson is the AU’s CEO, who’s also the body’s legal representative and the Commission’s chief accounting officer, is elected by the Assembly for a four-year term, renewable once. He has the power to appoint and manage the Commission’s staff and acts as the depository for all AU and OAU treaties and legal instruments. “Africa’s unity is sacred to me. We must return unity to the top of our priorities, as Tanzania’s Julius Mwalimu Nyerere, and Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah did,” Raila said. “Without unity in a fast-consolidating and changing world, Africa will continue to be marginalised, exploited and irrelevant,” he continued. He said Africa is ‘the richest continent on Earth in terms of strategic materials, but the paradox is that the richest in terms of resources is the poorest in terms of living conditions of its people’. “This is what we need to change so that the African people can be rich people,” he said. An economically transformed continent should be ‘thriving on the richness of its resources’ to become a powerhouse of global trade, he said. Raila said he is an Afro-optimist and believes that Africa can’t be developed by foreigners, who usually come to invest to make money. The energy and brains of African people can only develop Africa, he said. “Africa has the knowledge and ability to turn all this wealth into prosperity and to leverage its people and make them rich and powerful and claim the 21st century as the Africa century,” he said. If elected for the position of the chairmanship of the African Union Commission, Raila said, he’s committed to turning this vision into a reality.

Pisces Daily Horoscope Today, December 07, 2024 predicts opportunities abroadThe ultra-portable projector race heated up this year, and the LG Cinebem Q is the LG’s top contender. The tiny new projector has ultra-sharp 4K picture quality and a compact form factor, but that small size does mean it has underpowered speakers and needs a fairly noisy fan to keep it cool. The screen only peaks at 500 ANSI lumens, so compared to some other projectors, it won’t hold up that well in semi-lit rooms. This minuscule projector is geared toward being put away, pulled out and taken on the go, but during my testing, I’ve been using it full-time in my living room. The vivid colour impressed me, but I needed to tweak the settings heavily to get a picture quality I was happy with. Once I set it up, it was a treat to use, but an extra 500 ANSI lumens and a little more space for better fans and more ports would have made this machine perfect. I had to use the foot to tile the projector forward to make it hit my screen. I placed my unit on a shelf behind and to the left of my couch, and the CineBeam’s software did a good job of automatically adjusting the picture’s angle and the autofocus. The focus is what surprised me the most and was pin-sharp every time I moved it. The angle of the screen usually needs a little software keystone adjustment, but it was always very close to square. This adjustment is easy to do, but it’s a bit weird that LG’s projector-specific settings are labelled as ‘installation wizard’ instead of something more self-explanatory, like ‘projector settings.’ I also love the look of this projector and the integrated handle, which flips around to be the foot of the unit. It allows you to adjust its height in a really appealing way. That said, its small form factor limits it in a few ways, and I’m not sure it’s worth it. It gets hot and noisy and can’t fit in very great speakers, which doesn’t make it the perfect all-in-one projector it promises to be. Out of the box, the picture looked okay but rather dull, especially at full brightness. While I usually have my displays on the standard settings with a few tweaks to colour accuracy, I ended up using LG’s Vivid mode, which looked okay but that made it hard to dial in skin tones. On top of that, due to the limited brightness, HDR content did have a few moments where it looked more blown out than I would have liked. I also had to keep the brightness below 75 percent to retain a good contrast ratio. This means while the projector is rated for 500 lumens, you’ll actually be getting less since the picture’s contrast degrades a lot when you have it at 100 percent. LG’s motion-smoothing technology (TruMotion) is turned on by default and each app acts as its own input. This means you need to turn it off and then make sure to choose the option to ‘apply this to all inputs’ to make sure it’s off for every app. This also applies your colour settings across the board. Once you do this, motion smoothing also remains off, even when you plug and unplug the projector which is great since it’s meant to be portable and moved around. One of the main drawbacks I had with the system is that it’s pretty targeted at movies and TV shows. Since there is only one HDMI eARC port on the back, you can only plug in one thing at a time, which for me was usually my sound system. This meant when I wanted to play Xbox or Switch, I needed to unplug the sound and use the underwhelming speakers integrated into the projector. You can connect Bluetooth speakers or modern soundbars wirelessly to the CineBeam Q, but it would have been a lot more straightforward to simply install a second HDMI or even an AUX on the back. Especially since the speakers inside are barely passable. They’re 3-watt drivers, and they struggle to fill my living room even when maxed out at 100 percent. No matter what, you can still hear the gentle hum of the cooling fan while watching content when using the built-in speakers too. There is a USB-C port on the back that you can use for a USB-C to C display or to power the projector with a portable battery . I tried using a USB-C adapter and an HDMI-to-USB-C cable to use the port with HDMI devices like my Xbox, but neither worked. While I like the ability to power the projector over USB-C, the device still comes with an older-style barrel connector for plugging it into the wall. I think it would have made more sense to just use USB-C for wall and portable power, and then add two HDMI ports instead of the current port selection. Like many TVs’ built-in software, the CineBeam Q menus have more lag than you’d like. While it’s usually easy to say that you can skip this with something like an Apple TV box , you probably won’t want to on the CineBeam Q since it only has one HDMI port. Beyond the menu’s slowness, the projector only has an IR receiver for the remote on the back, so if you have the projector behind you as I do, the remote is even laggier since you need to point it directly at the projector for it to work. With my other projectors , the remotes connect through Bluetooth, and they’re much more seamless than the IR implementation. If you have the projector on a table in front of you, it’s better, but I don’t recommend this since you have to have a very stable table for your projector not to shake as you walk by it or use the table to hold snacks and drinks. The initial setup was also fairly annoying. When I tried to create an LG account on the projector so I could download apps, it kept failing. Then, I needed to go to the LG website on my computer to create one, then go back to the projector, and log in. I was able to get it working at the end of the day, but it was a lot more of a hassle than it should have been and not a great first impression. Finally, this last gripe is one that I have with all LG TVs and projectors except for the OLED lineup. With all projectors and NanoCell TVs, the screen savers you get with the TV are five pretty average stock images. They’re not terrible photos, but it’s really annoying that you can’t change them unless you have an OLED TV. On top of that, I find that there’s a lot of bloat in the WebOS software. It’s usable, but not as clean as Google TV, or Roku. While it hasn’t launched in Canada yet, it seems likely that LG will pump in more advertisements to its software over the next few years as well. This 48,000 mAh battery dropped down to 37 percent after one two hour movie. At the end of the day, this projector gets the job done, and from looking around, it appears that it’s often on sale for between $1,000 and $1,300, which is a pretty solid price for this picture quality. That being said, it’s not necessarily cheap, and buyers should be aware of the limitations a single HDMI port will offer if they plan to use a high-quality sound system and an external device like an Xbox or Apple TV. That said, being able to run it off USB-C power makes it really easy to take on the go if you want a projector to use when camping. The fact that the Bluetooth speakers worked without any noticeable sound lag was also reassuring. I would have also loved for LG to add a quarter-twenty screw jack on the bottom to make this easily mountable on a tripod to make it even more portable given its small size. Overall, if you can get this device for $1,000, you’ll be more than happy with it, and its small size makes it easy to store. Plus, it looks pretty solid. However, as I wrote above, be warned that the fans are louder than you’d want if you’re using it indoors and on a table in front of you. It’s also not very bright, and if I was given a choice, I’d buy a brighter 1080p projector at this price. The 4K sharpness is nice, but compared to my (more expensive) but brighter JMGO projector , you lose a lot of details in the shadows simply because the brightness and contrast on the CineBeam Q are quite lacklustre. The CineBeam Q is $1,274 on Amazon , but only $999 at Visions and if you can get it for an even $1,000 I think its fairly solid for that price."Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. PGA Tour Highlights: The RSM Classic 2024, Final Round

Abono party list president gunned down in PangasinanTwo sides looking to escape the shackles of relegation in the Turkish Super Lig will face off on Sunday when Kayserispor welcome Alanyaspor to Kadir Has Stadium. The hosts are the first team in the relegation zone, but the visitors are only one spot and two points ahead, making this a relegation six-pointer. © Imago Kayserispor are finding it difficult to rediscover the form that helped them go on a five-match unbeaten streak in the Super Lig between October 5 and November 8. The Anatolian Star have lost their last two matches by a combined 9-2 scoreline, losing 6-2 to Fenerbahce before a 3-0 defeat against Caykur Rizespor in their last league game. The loss to Rizespor was a sore one for Kayserispor who had two men sent off, with manager Sinan Kaloglu getting a red card in the first half, before Stephane Bahoken received a second yellow card in the 75th minute. The Kayseri-based side must now win the relegation six-pointer against Alanyaspor, as victory on Sunday will take them directly above the opposition and out of the relegation zone. However, the Anatolian Star have failed to win any of their six home matches in this campaign, picking up three wins and three draws each. © Imago Meanwhile, Alanyaspor ended a five-game winless run in the Super Lig with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Trabzonspor last Saturday, playing over 20 minutes with a man down. The victory seemed to have opened the floodgates for Fatih Tekke 's side, who followed up that game with a 4-1 win over third division side Fethiyespor on Wednesday. Alanyaspor climbed out of the relegation zone following last weekend's win, and a win on Sunday could further steer them away from the zone, possibly opening up a five-point gap if other results are favourable to them. In a worst-case scenario, the Alanya-based side will hope to avoid defeat, which would still leave them above the relegation zone, and securing draws in their last two away games will leave them confident of the possibility of achieving this. © Imago Kayserispor will have to make do without 32-year-old forward Bahoken, who will miss this clash through suspension after his dismissal last time out. Centre-back Majid Hosseini also continues to struggle with a knee injury and is not expected back on the pitch until the middle of this month. Alanyaspor will remain without defender Furkan Bayir , who has an ankle injury and is expected to be sidelined until the latter part of this month. Yusuf Ozdemir was sent off in the win over Trabzonspor and is suspended for this clash, a similar scenario with Nuno Lima who has accumulated an unhealthy number of yellow cards. Kayserispor possible starting lineup: Piri; Attamhah, Kolovetsios, Carole; Kaldirim, Karimi, Bourabia, Yilmaz, Sazdagi; Boa Morte, Cardoso Alanyaspor possible starting lineup: Taskiran; Balkovec, Aliti, Aksoy, Hadergjonaj; Richard, Makouta; Augusto, Janvier, Karaca; Cordova Kayserispor are struggling at the moment and are on a downward spiral, while they have especially struggled on home soil. With Alanyaspor's recent resurgence, we believe that the visitors have enough at the moment to take something from this game, which is why we are predicting a stalemate. James Politi in Washington Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world Donald Trump has vowed to speed up regulatory approvals for investors spending $1bn or more in the US, a signal that he will address one of developers’ thorniest complaints when he takes office next month. The president-elect made the offer on Truth Social on Tuesday, reflecting his plan to spur more domestic investments through deregulation rather than the tax credits and subsidies that have been the preferred approach under President Joe Biden. “Any person or company investing ONE BILLION DOLLARS, OR MORE, in the US of America, will receive fully expedited approvals and permits, including, but in no way limited to, all Environmental approvals. GET READY TO ROCK!!!,” Trump wrote on his social media platform. Trump did not provide any details on which regulatory approvals would be granted or how the $1bn investment threshold would be applied. But the proposal comes on top of his vow during the campaign to reduce the corporate tax rate from 21 per cent to 15 per cent for companies that invest in the country — another big pitch to boost domestic manufacturing. “This is awesome,” Elon Musk, the billionaire technology executive and one of Trump’s top cheerleaders and business allies, wrote on X in reaction to the $1bn permitting proposal. Trump has tasked Musk with slashing federal spending. Permitting reform enjoys widespread support on both sides of the political arena in the US. It is also backed by advocates of clean energy — who see it as critical to rolling out the big projects needed to accelerate a transition from polluting fossil fuels — and oil and gas developers , who say permitting rules have slowed construction of pipelines and other infrastructure. Trump has also vowed to slash regulations designed to curb emissions from the oil sector, in an attempt to promote more drilling. Conservationists argue permitting and other environmental rules are essential to preserve the landscape and maintain clean air and water. The $1bn floor for permitting relief could be controversial because it excludes investments under that threshold, meaning small and medium size projects would not benefit. Trump’s post came as he has pledged to implement other policies — such as across-the-board tariffs of up to 20 per cent on all imports, and a rollback of clean energy tax credits — that threaten to damage investment in US manufacturing and reignite inflation in the world’s largest economy. Throughout Biden’s presidency, some US officials and lawmakers have been worried that regulatory hurdles were holding back the implementation of his industrial policy, including infrastructure, clean energy and semiconductor manufacturing projects. Developers of cross-state transmission lines — considered critical to efforts to electrify the energy sector and support more battery-powered cars — have also complained permitting rules stunted construction. A legislative compromise between Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, and John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, to speed up permitting, failed to pass Congress. The Biden administration took some steps by executive action to try to hasten some regulatory approvals earlier this year — but what developers consider onerous environmental assessments, as well as a patchwork of rules set by state and federal agencies, remain in place.Orchard has appointed Anne Ngo to the newly created role of head of customer growth and martech. Starting out as an analyst for venture capital, Judd's now over 150 episodes deep on Talk Ya Book, a video podcast tapping the knowledge of Australia and beyond's most notable fundies and business thinkers, and closing in on 18 months managing the Cerutty Macro Fund. A long-only equities portfolio targeting 15-40 stocks named after the free-thinking Percy Cerutty – iconoclastic and eccentric coach of Aussie track legend and later business leader Herb Elliott – its raison d'etre is to find micro and small-cap Aussie equities and larger global names with upside based on the fund's analysis of the macroeconomic picture. Since its inception, Cerutty has delivered solid performance – adding 19.23% on an annualised basis since its launch and 29.17% over the year to October 31, despite a dip in the final month of that period. That compares to 12.03% and 26.65% for its benchmark, the ASX small ords accumulation index. But the US election and the looming return of Donald Trump to the White House with an all Republican-controlled legislature are the game changers at front of mind for Judd. And the early days post-election have given Judd and the Cerutty team reason to see his coming second term in a different light, seeing ongoing strength in the US dollar as a result. "We initially thought the US dollar would drop more under Trump because we thought his deficits were going to be bigger," Judd told Stockhead. "But for a number of reasons we've altered that view and we think the US is going to suck in a lot of capital now as they get rid of deregulation and reduce tax rates. "And we think internally in the US, you could see a real boom. "The US dollar has already been strong for a long time, so plenty of people are calling for it to roll over, but we've adjusted that view." Fundies like Chris Judd are trying to cut through the confusion around the market impact of Donald Trump's election. Pic: Getty Images Tariffs and taxes The two key Trump policies Judd is watching closely are income tax cuts, which economists think will spur a ramp up in consumer spending over 2026 and 2027, as well as radical tariffs placed not just on products out of China, but also friendly nations like Canada and Mexico. "The tax cuts are probably the most important thing and we think it will pass in the first 100 days," Judd said. "We think they have a big impact on the consumer, particularly a lot of those tax cuts are around people that don't have a huge amount of income, removing tax on tips (for example). "These types of people generally spend a larger portion of what they earn, as opposed to high income earners ... who are already consuming the vast majority of what they need." Judd thinks that could be positive for payment and gambling stocks exposed to the US market like gaming company Light & Wonder (ASX:LNW) , Afterpay owner Block Inc (ASX:SQ2) , which Cerutty doesn't hold, and Paypal (NASDAQ:PYPL) , which it does. The tariffs, on the other hand, could be "more bark than bite" compared to the tax cuts. Judd says Trump could be wielding them as a stick in negotiations with trading partners. "We think the tariffs will be implemented gradually and used as a tool for behavioural change that Trump wants to see with other countries," he said. That means they won't necessarily be the inflationary fuel from the moment of Trump's inauguration, as some commentators fear. "We'll wait and see, but we think they're more a bargaining tool for him to see a response from different governments around the world." The fallout for commodities Trump's return to the Oval Office will also bring with it a pro-development mindset, with deregulation and a thinning of the Capitol Hill bureaucracy high on the agenda. Judd thinks that could be less bullish for commodity prices, which thrive when metals and energy fuels are in short supply. "One of the reasons we were bullish commodity prices was because of all the red tape surrounding commodity producers as they tried to pull stuff out of the ground, as well as the ESG movement which had gone from being seemingly about the environment and it just kept scaling up until it took on more of a religious fervour," he said. "We think that's going to be really reduced." Cerutty's team also sees a high likelihood of an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia are both major mining, energy and agricultural producers. But outside of the US, a right-wing wave is on the horizon across major South American copper, lithium and iron ore producing countries following the success last year of free-market firebrand Javier Milei in Argentina. "There's a couple of right-wing leaders in those countries that are very much pro-business, pro the economy and anti-regulation, much like Milei has been, much like Trump's promising to be in his second term," Judd said. "And so that's great for the supply of commodities, but we think it's potentially a headwind to the price of commodities, copper and lithium producers in particular." The other side of the equation for commodities is Chinese demand. There could be issues there for bulks. "We think that China will stimulate their economy, but we think that stimulus will be pushed towards increasing internal consumption in China," Judd said. "We don't think it's going to be built around building more apartment blocks and they're already producing so many manufactured goods to be exported. "We're not sure if that's where the attention is going to go, either. We think the main thing China needs is to start increasing consumption domestically. "We think that's where the stimulus will be pushed towards, which is certainly less commodity intensive, particularly around bulks." Stocks to watch One of Cerutty's top picks is AML3D (ASX:AL3) , which recently raised $30 million to expand its operations in the United States, where it produces and supplies the Arcemy system, a 3D metal printing process, to US Navy contractors. $12m of that will be used to double the scale of its technology centre in Ohio, where it produces Arcemy manufacturing systems as well as undertakes contract manufacturing, alloy testing and prototyping contracts. It stands to benefit from the Trump administration's motivation to build up domestic manufacturing capacity. "AL3 is an additive manufacturing business that's already got a chunk of contracts with the US Navy and Department of Defense and there are some huge navy contracts coming up," Judd said. "They're well funded and may be a beneficiary of the US wanting to build out its manufacturing capacity." And the automated nature of its manufacturing processes means it is less likely to be negatively impacted by the potential removal of low cost labour implied by the proposed deportation of 11 million undocumented migrants. "The productivity from these additive manufacturing machines is significant," Judd said. "We could see a world where the US, using more innovation, can build out that manufacturing capacity whilst not flooding their country with new available low-cost labour." Looking to Australia's own defence industry spending, Judd says contractor Civmec (ASX:CVL) is positioning itself to benefit. "It is looking at completing a JV with Austal (ASX:ASB) and some of the navy contracts and shipbuilding contracts available in Australia for the submarine program are going to be really significant," he said. "We think some of those companies could play into that thematic of increased defence spending, which we think is going to continue to be really strong even though we don't think the war between Russia and Ukraine can continue for an extended period. "We still think defence spending in the US, particularly in Europe, but (also) other countries around the world is going continue to be heightened." Josh Hubbard scored 25 points and Claudell Harris Jr. scored 21 on 6-of-9 shooting as Mississippi State escaped with a 91-84 win against Prairie View A&M on Sunday in Starkville, Miss. Prairie View A&M took a 65-64 lead with 10:38 remaining, but Hubbard and Harris Jr. each scored seven points to power the ensuing 14-1 run that put Mississippi State up for good. Hubbard punctuated the rally with a 3-pointer that made it 78-66 with 5:51 to play. The Bulldogs (8-1) stretched their lead to as many as 13 points in the closing minutes to notch their second straight win. Shawn Jones Jr. added 11 points for Mississippi State, while Michael Nwoko added 10 points and 10 rebounds. RJ Melendez also netted 10 points. The Panthers (1-8) were led by the trio of Nick Anderson (21 points) Tanahj Pettway (20) and Marcel Bryant (19). Pettway drilled 4 of 5 3-pointers and Bryant grabbed seven rebounds. Prairie View A&M got off to a hot start, opening up a 27-12 lead with 10:42 left in the first half. It was a surprising haymaker from the visitors, who entered the game winless in Division I play and faced a Bulldogs team that was ranked last week. Mississippi State eventually found its stride offensively, turning things around with a 32-17 run to tie the game at 44 entering halftime. The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the field overall in the first half, but only made six of their 17 attempts from 3-point range (35.3 percent). Their defense remained an issue throughout the half, with the Panthers hitting 16 of their 27 shots (59.3 percent) and canning 5 of 8 3-pointers. Neither team led by more than five early in the second half until Mississippi State pulled away. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 55.6 percent from the floor (30-of-54) and drilled 11 of 26 attempts (42.3 percent) from long range. They outrebounded Prairie View A&M 35-22 and outscored them 31-20 in bench points. The Panthers held a 34-32 advantage in points in the paint and shot 56.4 percent overall for the game, including 52.6 percent (10-of-19) on threes. --Field Level Media

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Zahir Abdus-Salaam ran for a touchdown and caught another as Western Michigan defeated Eastern Michigan 26-18 on Saturday to become bowl eligible, snapping a three-game losing streak. Abdus-Salaam scored on a 22-yard run for a 23-8 lead in the third quarter and he celebrated by jumping into a snowbank bordering the end zone. The Broncos (6-6, 5-3 Mid-American Conference) blocked a punt for safety that started a run of 16 points in under four minutes. Abdus-Salaam scored on a 31-yard screen pass then Joey Pope recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set up Jalen Buckley's 15-yard TD run with 19 seconds before the half ended. Eastern Michigan's Delmert Mimms II scored two third-quarter touchdowns. The teams exchanged field goals for the only fourth-quarter scoring. The Eagles got the ball back with 2:18 remaining but on their first play Bilhal Kone intercepted a tipped pass. Eastern Michigan (5-7, 2-6) lost its last five games. Abdus-Salaam rushed for 135 yards and Buckley 103 on 19 carries apiece. Hayden Wolff threw for 126 yards and a score. Abdus-Salaam had 40 yards receiving. Mimms rushed for 127 yards on 18 carries. WASHINGTON (AP) — For years, Pat Verhaeghe didn’t think highly of Donald Trump as a leader. Then Verhaeghe began seeing more of Trump’s campaign speeches online and his appearances at sporting events. There was even the former president’s pairing with Bryson DeChambeau as part of the pro golfer’s YouTube channel series to shoot an under-50 round of golf while engaging in chitchat with his partner. “I regret saying this, but a while ago I thought he was an idiot and that he wouldn’t be a good president,” said the 18-year-old first-time voter. “I think he’s a great guy now.” Verhaeghe isn't alone among his friends in suburban Detroit or young men across America. Although much of the electorate shifted right to varying degrees in 2024, young men were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, while Democrat Joe Biden had won a similar share of this group four years earlier. White men under 30 were solidly in Trump’s camp this year — about 6 in 10 voted for Trump — while young Latino men were split between the two candidates. Most Black men under 30 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, but about one-third were behind Trump. Young Latino men’s views of the Democratic Party were much more negative than in 2020, while young Black men’s views of the party didn’t really move. About 6 in 10 Latino men under 30 had a somewhat or very favorable view of the Democrats in 2020, which fell to about 4 in 10 this year. On the other hand, about two-thirds of young Black men had a favorable view of the Democrats this year, which was almost identical to how they saw the party four years ago. “Young Hispanic men, and really young men in general, they want to feel valued," said Rafael Struve, deputy communications director for Bienvenido, a conservative group that focused on reaching young Hispanic voters for Republicans this year. “They're looking for someone who fights for them, who sees their potential and not just their struggles.” Struve cited the attempted assassination of Trump during a July rally in Pennsylvania as one of the catalyzing moments for Trump’s image among many young men. Trump, Struve said, was also able to reach young men more effectively by focusing on nontraditional platforms like podcasts and digital media outlets. “Getting to hear from Trump directly, I think, really made all the difference," Struve said of the former president's appearances on digital media platforms and media catering to Latino communities, like town halls and business roundtables Trump attended in Las Vegas and Miami. Not only did Trump spend three hours on Joe Rogan's chart-topping podcast, but he took up DeChambeau's “Break 50” challenge for the golfer's more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers. Trump already had an edge among young white men four years ago, although he widened the gap this year. About half of white men under 30 supported Trump in 2020, and slightly less than half supported Biden. Trump's gains among young Latino and Black men were bigger. His support among both groups increased by about 20 percentage points, according to AP VoteCast — and their feelings toward Trump got warmer, too. It wasn’t just Trump. The share of young men who identified as Republicans in 2024 rose as well, mostly aligning with support for Trump across all three groups. “What is most alarming to me is that the election is clear that America has shifted right by a lot,” said William He, founder of Dream For America, a liberal group that works to turn out young voters and supported Harris’ presidential bid. With his bombastic demeanor and a policy agenda centered on a more macho understanding of culture , Trump framed much of his campaign as a pitch to men who felt scorned by the country’s economy, culture and political system. Young women also slightly swung toward the former president, though not to the degree of their male counterparts. It's unclear how many men simply did not vote this year. But there's no doubt the last four years brought changes in youth culture and how political campaigns set out to reach younger voters. Democrat Kamala Harris' campaign rolled out policy agendas tailored to Black and Latino men, and the campaign enlisted a range of leaders in Black and Hispanic communities to make the case for the vice president. Her campaign began with a flurry of enthusiasm from many young voters, epitomized in memes and the campaign's embrace of pop culture trends like the pop star Charli XCX's “brat” aesthetic . Democrats hoped to channel that energy into their youth voter mobilization efforts. “I think most young voters just didn’t hear the message,” said Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, a liberal group that engages younger voters. Mayer said the Harris campaign’s pitch to the country was “largely convoluted” and centered on economic messaging that he said wasn’t easily conveyed to younger voters who were not already coming to political media. “And I think that the policies themselves were also very narrow and targeted when what we really needed was a simple, bold economic vision,” said Mayer. Trump also embraced pop culture by appearing at UFC fights, football games and appearing alongside comedians, music stars and social media influencers. His strategists believed that the former president’s ability to grab attention and make his remarks go viral did more for the campaign than paid advertisements or traditional media appearances. Trump's campaign also heavily cultivated networks of online conservative platforms and personalities supportive of him while also engaging a broader universe of podcasts, streaming sites, digital media channels and meme pages open to hearing him. “The right has been wildly successful in infiltrating youth political culture online and on campus in the last couple of years, thus radicalizing young people towards extremism,” said He, who cited conservative activist groups like Turning Point USA as having an outsize impact in online discourse. “And Democrats have been running campaigns in a very old fashioned way. The battleground these days is cultural and increasingly on the internet.” Republicans may lose their broad support if they don't deliver on improving Americans' lives, Struve cautioned. Young men, especially, may drift from the party in a post-Trump era if the party loses the president-elect's authenticity and bravado. Bienvenido, for one group, will double down in the coming years to solidify and accelerate the voting pattern shifts seen this year, Struve said. “We don’t want this to be a one and done thing,” he said. Canada's Trudeau says he had an 'excellent conversation' with Trump in Florida after tariffs threatA deep-storage battery being trialled in Kununurra in the Kimberley region of Western Australia could solve the clean energy challenge for some of the nation's most remote communities. Login or signup to continue reading As well as being a challenging environment to live or work in, hot and humid Kununurra is not connected to the state or national electricity grid. "A lot of our communities are remote and do struggle with the cost of living and we don't want them to miss out on the energy transition," Horizon Power's executive general manager for business development and strategy Vi Garrood told AAP. "And we don't want to compromise on safety - that's why small-scale trials are really important," she said. the vanadium flow battery won't power cars, laptops or fit into a mobile phone, but it can store energy for 10-12 hours and help homes and worksites to displace diesel and gas with clean, safe and reliable power. As the state's regional power provider, Horizon is using the trial to learn how to provide safe, affordable, reliable off-grid power during extreme temperatures and major weather events. "It's one of the technologies we need to get us to net zero and running on 100 per cent renewables for periods of time," Ms Garrood said. After stress-testing the technology in Kununurra, it could be rolled out across Horizon's microgrids and other systems. "Each battery design is examined on the basis of what application we need it for - so what is the problem it's solving," she said. With a 78-kilowatt capacity and 220 kilowatt hours of storage, WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby says the vanadium battery is well suited to Kimberley conditions, where energy storage must cope with extreme temperatures and deliver energy over a long period of time. "Here in Kununurra, where it was 44 degrees the other day, you need a battery that's tough ... and these, we hope, will do the job very well," Mr Whitby said. "We know that the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow so batteries are the answer in terms of capturing that energy when it's available and dispatching it when it's really needed. "The eyes of the energy world are looking at Kununurra to see how this goes." Horizon is also trialling Redflow's zinc bromine flow battery (100 kW/400 kWh) on Nullagine's microgrid and BASF's sodium sulphur battery (250 kW/1450 kWh) at Carnarvon. The various technologies can shift rooftop solar electricity produced in the middle of the day to evening hours and operate alongside existing lithium-ion batteries in Horizon's network, to provide longer-duration storage. Most of Horizon's systems are microgrids, for remote communities and mining operations, and involve generation, network and retail components all within the particular community they are supporting. Ms Garrood said deep-storage batteries can cover periods of "renewable drought" when there is minimal generation, including for night-time loads. "Long-duration energy storage is important for us because it's predicted to be cost-effective when compared to lithium-ion batteries," she said. "It could open the door to taking our small, microgrid communities to 100 per cent renewable energy - that's the plan." "Our best chance of success at decarbonisation is to throw everything at it, and deep storage is one of many solutions in our toolkit," she said. As the technology is based around a tank of liquid electrolytes, they are less likely to catch fire. They can be scaled up and save space by adding more tanks rather than shipping in container-sized lithium batteries. It's also very important to have local support and gain experience when trialling new technology, especially for systems that are in remote locations and typically automated, Ms Garrood said. The technology supplied by VSUN Energy, an offshoot of mining company Australian Vanadium Ltd (AVL), can charge and discharge energy at the same time and the units have a life span of more than 25 years. With most of the world's vanadium supply coming from Russia, China, and South Africa, AVL intends to provide an ethical supply of vanadium to battery, steel and metals markets. Their electrolyte manufacturing facility in WA is part of a "pit to battery" strategy that could support the rollout of vanadium flow batteries in Australia, according to chief executive Graham Arvidson. While it's a first for Horizon, the 40-year-old technology was invented in Australia at the University of NSW and has been grid-connected for 20 years in other countries. "It's really coming into its own with the energy transition because we're looking at long-duration batteries to enable renewable energy like solar to be shifted from day to evening," Mr Arvidson. "Now that this battery is commissioned, we're looking forward to a true test of what it can do for communities like Kununurra," he said. The PCLC began in the early 1980s with a small group of concerned community members, and over the past four decades it has grown into a vital resource for many residents of Perry County. The organization was born out of a shared concern about illiteracy when Dale Lesperance approached Lane Partner, seeking a solution to the lack of educational opportunities. With a $100 grant from the New Bloomfield Civic Club, they organized a Laubach Literacy training event for a small group of 10-12 people, using books loaned from the Juniata County Literacy Council. The organization started simply, without a formal structure, but local churches and clubs helped spread the word, and volunteer tutors worked with students one-on-one. The first year, they worked with only a handful of people, meeting in Father Larry’s house at St. Bernard Catholic Church. That informal start laid the foundation for what would become a much larger operation. By 1984, after securing a $25,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), the PCLC moved into the basement of the Newport Public Library. At that point, the organization hired its first executive director, Wendy Lindstrom, and began to expand its offerings, including high school equivalency instruction. In 1993, a major shift occurred when Carol Steiner took over as executive director. Steiner’s priorities included integrating computer literacy into PCLC’s programs and significantly increasing fundraising efforts. At that time, Anne Chappelka, a new arrival to Perry County, became deeply involved in the organization and eventually joined the board, where she remained an active volunteer until her passing in 2021. Tragedy struck in 1997 when Steiner died in a car accident. Chappelka, serving as the board president, stepped in as acting director until a permanent replacement could be found. With help from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, which had strong respect for Steiner, PCLC was able to continue its operations while searching for a new leader. By 2000, the organization had outgrown its library basement and moved to a new facility on Market Street in Newport. In 2003, the Newport School District made a significant decision to allow PCLC to use its facilities as a GED test site, an arrangement that benefited many adults in the community who previously had to travel to Harrisburg Area Community College to take tests. When Executive Director Susan Risner retired in 2007, Kathleen Bentley, a former special education teacher, took over. Bentley brought a wealth of experience to the organization, and her approach focused on treating each individual with dignity and compassion. Bentley’s time at PCLC saw the organization expand its services further, with a new location on South Fifth Street offering more space for workforce training and other resources. She established partnerships with various agencies, including Perry Apex Services Unlimited (PASU), which provided transportation to help people access PCLC services. Bentley also launched a scholarship fund that paid for at least half the cost of GED testing. Bentley’s work highlighted the profound need for basic services like identification documents, which many residents lacked. Through her efforts, PCLC helped individuals obtain essential documents like photo IDs, birth certificates and social security cards. In 2010, a social work office was established, and Bentley used grants to provide other crucial services such as childcare for students’ children and emergency food and gas cards. In December 2021, Bentley retired, and Leslie Heimbaugh, who had been with the organization since 2009, took over as executive director. Heimbaugh initially joined PCLC as a part-time office manager and quickly became involved in fundraising and supporting students. She served as an administrative assistant and development officer before being asked to take on the executive director role in 2017. However, that meant she’d need to earn a bachelor’s degree, which she did by completing a degree in communications from Central Penn College at age 58, even becoming the valedictorian of her class. Heimbaugh’s deep commitment to the work of PCLC is reflected in her passion for the students and families the organization serves. “It’s such a privilege that people trust us to help them through some of the roughest times in their lives,” she said. “It’s simultaneously the most joyful and toughest work I’ve ever done.” Heimbaugh is particularly moved by the resilience of students who, despite facing enormous challenges in their lives, continue to pursue their educational goals. She acknowledges the importance of offering second chances. “PCLC is all about second, third, and sometimes even fourth chances. We never judge anyone who needs to walk away and return when conditions are more favorable for their success.” The range of services offered by PCLC is extensive, with a primary focus on adult education and GED preparation, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Heimbaugh pointed out that the number of ESL students has been growing rapidly, with all students legally residing in the U.S. or holding refugee status. In addition to the educational services, PCLC provides an array of support services, including help with obtaining vital documents, emergency food and gas cards, childcare for students’ children, free tax preparation for low-income residents, and assistance with healthcare connections. As an official Pennsylvania CareerLink, PCLC helps individuals connect with employment and training opportunities, especially for youth and adults who need job readiness support. The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, which co-locates with PCLC, provides services to Perry County residents with disabilities. Merakey, another organization that shares space, runs programs for adults with mental health challenges, including advocacy, recovery and psychiatric rehabilitation. We listen to what our clients need, take care of what we can, and offer a ‘warm hand-off’ to one of our partners.” The impact of PCLC’s work is evident in the stories of individuals it serves. Heimbaugh shared an example of a student who came to the organization with the hope that a pair of steel-toed boots could help secure a job. PCLC was able to provide the necessary support, and the individual eventually found employment. PCLC continues to serve residents not only from Perry County but also from neighboring areas such as upper Dauphin and eastern Juniata counties. As Heimbaugh put it, “The people we serve are just like you and me — they want the same things we do—love, safety, security, education, a home, and family.” Many of the students and clients face significant obstacles in their lives, but PCLC’s mission is to help them overcome those barriers and achieve their goals, one step at a time.

DULUTH — Friends and colleagues took to social media to remember Mary Murphy upon the news of her death on Wednesday, Dec. 25. Murphy was the longest-serving female legislator and second-longest-serving member of the Minnesota House. Murphy died at the age of 85 on Christmas Day, just days after suffering . House Speaker Melissa Hortman (DFL-Fridley) announced Murphy’s death in a post on Facebook, which read: “She was a wonderful state representative and human being. So many people will miss her, and remember her and her accomplishments fondly.” “Mary was in so many ways ahead of her time and was often the only woman at the table in northern Minnesota,” U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said in a statement. “That’s changed now thanks to her trailblazing legacy.” Murphy was first elected to serve House District 14B from 1977-1982 and went on to serve District 8A from 1983-2002, District 6B from 2003-2012 and District 3B from 2013-2022. In 2022, Murphy lost the District 3B race against Republican by a mere 33 votes. Zeleznikar, who retained the seat in the 2024 election, expressed condolences in a Facebook post, writing: “Mary worked hard for northern Minnesota, a place she called home her entire lifetime. Her dedication, service and hard work can be witnessed in multiple projects across the communities she served. I was honored to know her, and work with her on senior care issues during my nursing home administrator years.” A Hermantown High School graduate, Murphy earned a bachelor's degree in history and economics from the College of St. Scholastica and attended graduate school at multiple universities. Before retiring from the classroom in 1997, Murphy also served as a history and social studies teacher at Central High School in Duluth for more than three decades, a career Klobuchar cited in her tribute. “As a former teacher, she was a strong advocate for improving education for our children and she also fought to protect victims of domestic violence and stalking,” Klobuchar’s statement said. Murphy had championed programs like Head Start and DARE, as well as initiated legislation to fund statewide juvenile correction facilities. Last January, St. Louis County commissioners honored Murphy by renaming the Environmental Trust Fund in her honor. Having worked alongside Murphy during the redistricting process in 2010, Deputy Mayor of St. Paul Jaime Tincher commented: “Mary didn’t raise her voice, she didn’t engage in political sparring. Instead, she led with the quiet power of earned trust and deep credibility. Her effectiveness was rooted in the respect she had built over decades of service, and her ability to bring people together in ways that made them feel heard and valued, no matter their political affiliation.” During Murphy’s time in the House, she chaired multiple committees, including the judiciary finance, ethics, energy, and state government and veterans affairs committees. “As chair of bonding and later the Ways and Means Committee, she demonstrated an unwavering dedication to institutional support, always willing to offer her wisdom and advice on how best to approach the financial needs of our zoos,” State Rep. John Huot (DFL-Rosemount) posted on Facebook. “Mary was a remarkable legislator and a compassionate friend and mentor to many,” State Rep. Jay Xiong (DFL-St. Paul) said in a Facebook post. “Her unwavering commitment to her community and tireless advocacy for those in need have left an indelible mark on our state. Mary's legacy will continue to inspire us all as we strive to uphold the values she championed.” Murphy left a legacy of advocacy for women’s rights, health care, criminal justice, and labor and advocacy issues. Gov. Tim Walz spoke of Murphy as a “true champion for the Northland” in his post on Facebook and said “Gwen (his wife) and I are sending our love to her family.”None‘World at dawn of third nuclear age’, armed forces chief warns

The partnership combines Odyssey’s subsea resource exploration expertise with Cortina’s leadership in Mexico’s agricultural sector. It will employ advanced technology and sustainable dredging techniques, which have been successfully used in over 200 similar projects in Mexican waters by a local operating partner for the project. Speaking at the New York Times’ DealBook summit, Powell addressed a question about President-elect Donald Trump’s numerous public criticisms of the Fed and of Powell himself. During the election campaign, Trump had insisted that as president, he should have a “say” in the Fed’s interest rate policies. Despite Trump’s comments, the Fed chair said he was confident of widespread support in Congress for maintaining the central bank’s independence. UnitedHealthcare CEO kept a low public profile. Atkins is the CEO of Patomak Partners and a former SEC commissioner. Trump calls Atkins a “proven leader for common sense regulations.” In the years since leaving the SEC, Atkins has made the case against too much market regulation. The SEC oversees U.S. securities markets and investments. If confirmed next year by the new Republican-led Senate, Atkins would replace Gary Gensler, who's been leading the U.S. government’s crackdown on the crypto industry. Atkins was widely considered the most conservative SEC member during his tenure and known to have a strong free-market bent. Australia is banning social media for people under 16. Could this work elsewhere — or even there? It is an ambitious social experiment of our moment in history. Experts say it could accomplish something that parents, schools and other governments have attempted with varying degrees of success — keeping kids off social media until they turn 16. Australia’s new law was approved by its Parliament last week. It's an attempt to swim against many tides of modern life — formidable forces like technology, marketing, globalization and, of course, the iron will of a teenager. The ban won’t go into effect for another year. But how will Australia be able to enforce it? That’s not clear, nor will it be easy. Wake Forest keeps trying new things early in the season, even if not all of the adjustments are by design. The Demon Deacons will try to stick to the script when Detroit Mercy visits for Saturday's game in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Demon Deacons (5-1) will be at home for the final time prior to three consecutive road games. Detroit Mercy (3-2) already has two more victories than all of last season. After a couple of narrow wins and a loss at Xavier, Wake Forest had a smoother time earlier this week in defeating visiting Western Carolina 82-69 on Tuesday night. Yet these are games when teams have to figure where contributions are going to come from in certain situations. The experimenting took a turn for Wake Forest in the Western Carolina game. Center Efton Reid III had limited minutes because of migraines, so there was a shift in responsibilities. Normal backcourt players Cameron Hildreth and Juke Harris logged time at the power forward slot. "That's just part of it," coach Steve Forbes said. "They did a good job adjusting. We ran a lot of stuff and there are several guys learning different positions. ... I give credit to those guys for doing the best job that they could do on the fly and adjusting to the play calls that we ran and the stuff that we changed." Wake Forest could excel if both Parker Friedrichsen and Davin Cosby can be consistent 3-point threats. Friedrichsen slumped with shooting in the first few games of the season and was replaced in the starting lineup by Cosby. In Tuesday's game, Friedrichsen drained four 3-pointers, while Cosby hit two. "It was really good to see Parker and Davin both make shots together," Forbes said. Not everything was solved for the Demon Deacons. Western Carolina collected 12 offensive rebounds, and that took some of the shine off Wake Forest's defensive efforts. "We can't be a good defensive team, or a really good defensive team, unless we rebound the ball," Forbes said. "It's demoralizing to your defense to get stops and then not get the ball." In Detroit Mercy's 70-59 win at Ball State on Wednesday, Orlando Lovejoy tallied 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. "We got the ball to the shooters and playmakers," first-year Titans coach Mark Montgomery said. "You could tell by the guys' body language that we were going to get a road win. It had been a long time coming." On Saturday, the Titans will look for their second road victory since February 2023. The outcome at Ball State seemed significant to Montgomery. "We had to get over the hump," he said. "Our guys grinded it out." --Field Level MediaPanthers capture first football state championship

Welcome to Streaming Rewind, a weekly breakdown of the new and noteworthy as we work to help readers wade through the absolute deluge of television series and movies in the streaming space. Welcome to Christmas and New Years limbo, where the time is made up and the date doesn’t matter. There’s a limited number of releases this week, because Hollywood typically just shuts down for the last month of the year, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few surprises. The Beyoncé Bowl (Netflix) If you’re not a football fan, you may not have known that Beyoncé did a halftime special for the Ravens vs. Texans game on Christmas (that’s right, Netflix does football now too). In said special, she performed some of the songs from her Cowboy Carter album live for the very first time. If you’re a member of the Beyhive who wasn’t willing to sit through a football game to watch Queen Bey perform, Netflix released a stand-alone special of the performance today. And, for those wondering, Netflix did, indeed, manage to host two whole live events on Christmas day without its typical buffering issues. Squid Game is Back for Round 2 (Netflix) It’s been a Netflix week! The highly anticipated second season of Squid Game finally dropped, ironically resulting in many across the industry working during Christmas and continuing the trend of Netflix completely missing the point of the series . Reviews have been mixed due to it being painfully obvious that Seasons 2 and 3 were meant to be one complete story rather than split in half, but our critic Shannon Miller liked the season . If you’ve already finished your binge, check out how Squid Game’s Season 2 ending sets up Season 3 . The Order (On Demand) Nicholas Hoult has yet another film out on demand, this time alongside Jude Law and Jurnee Smollett. The film’s been met with early acclaim, and is based on a true story (and adapted from Kevin Flynn’s novel The Silent Brotherhood) centered on a string of bank robberies in the Pacific Northwest. Freshman Labaron Philon had the best game of his young career with 21 points and six assists for the Crimson Tide (11-2). Mark Sears had 20 points, including 6-for-14 3-point shooting. Grant Nelson added 17 points and eight rebounds and scored the game's first eight points. Alabama coach Nate Oats has sometimes been critical of his squad's defensive effort and the second half against the Jackrabbits will provide more fuel for that concern. Alabama did connect on a season-best 19 3-point shots but also attempted 55 long-range shots (34.5 percent). The Tide also saw South Dakota State put up 49 points in the second half to keep the score relatively competitive. Alabama claimed a fifth straight win with its third 100-plus point performance of the season. South Dakota State (9-6) was led by Washington State transfer Oscar Cluff, who had 21 points and 15 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. The Jackrabbits connected on 11-for-26 3-point shooting (42.3 percent), with guard Isaac Lindsey scoring 11 points, including 3-for-6 on 3-point tries. After Nelson's personal 8-0 run to open the game, South Dakota State pulled with 16-14 on a shot by William Whorton with 11:45 to play in the opening half. But Alabama then broke the game open, going on a 24-3 run culminating in a Holloway 3-pointer to give the Tide a 40-17 edge with 7:37 left in the opening half. South Dakota State trailed 57-33 at halftime, but played a much more competitive second half offensively by connecting on 17 of 33 shots (51.5 percent). Alabama will open 2025 with a home game against No. 12 Oklahoma on Saturday. South Dakota State will host Summit Conference opponent Denver on Thursday. --Field Level Media

The Press Council considered a complaint from Yoti Ltd concerning an article published by Crikey on 14 June 2024, headed “I tricked a selfie AI age-verification tool into letting a child ‘buy’ a knife” (Online). The article’s subheading said that “Governments are looking at using AI to estimate people’s age using a selfie. I fooled it using a stock image and an old aging filter.” The article reported that “A tool used to estimate age using facial analysis that is being promoted as a way to stop underage children from accessing social media or online pornography can be fooled using an aging filter on a popular photo-editing app.” The article went on to report that “One of Yoti’s methods for age estimation, which Opposition Leader Peter Dutton spruiked just yesterday — is ‘facial analysis’, which can calculate someone’s age using a selfie.” It reported that “Critics argue that age estimation through facial scans is flawed and vulnerable to being tricked. Yoti offers some measures to stop people from fooling its system, but it doesn’t change the underlying technology’s reliance on easily falsifiable information.” The article went on to say, “I know because I tricked Yoti’s age estimation into letting me ‘buy’ a fixed-blade knife using the photograph of a 10- year-old that I had put through an aging filter on a photo-editing application.” The complainant said that the article is entirely misrepresentative noting in particular the headline and the accompanying social media posts. The complainant said it had conversed with the publication and explained in detail how the “demo” the publication had used for the basis of the article, was a limited demo version of the age assurance technology and how it did not include Yoti’s liveness technology which would detect a manipulated image. The complainant said it explained how actual customers would always use liveness detection in a working model to ensure that manipulated images could not fool the system. The complainant said that the demo was designed to allow people to explore the technology in full to see what you could and could not do with this version. The complainant said that despite its explanation, the publication proceeded to report that it had “tricked the technology” when it had not and used an inflammatory and misleading headline. The complainant said the article damages Yoti’s reputation which is highly regarded in the age assurance sector and endorsed by numerous government and industry bodies. In response, the publication said the article made clear from the beginning that the article was about the underlying technology utilised in Yoti’s demo. It said that it updated the article and included the word “demo” in the headline and the article and added a clarification out of an abundance of caution after it was contacted by Yoti. The publication said that while Yoti disputes that the underlying technology used in the demonstration was “tricked” or “fooled”, it is obvious that this article demonstrates a fundamental flaw in the age verification technology that allows it to be tricked or fooled. Its system relies on visual cues that are able to be manipulated irrespective of someone’s age. That is why Yoti has separate liveliness detection technologies that it sells. The technology has a vulnerability which the publication demonstrated, even if it’s one that can be mitigated. Conclusion The Council’s Standards of Practice require publications to take reasonable steps to ensure that factual material in news material is accurate and not misleading (General Principle 1), and is presented with reasonable fairness and balance, and that writers’ expressions of opinions are not based on significantly inaccurate factual material or omission of key facts (General Principle 3). They also require publications to take reasonable steps to provide a correction or other adequate remedial action if published material is significantly inaccurate or misleading (General Principle 2) and provide an opportunity for a response to be published by a person adversely referred to (General Principle 4). The Council accepts that the publication has accurately reported how it used a used an image of a child to buy a knife when it used an online demo tool provided by Yoti on its website. The Council also accepts that age verification technology may be manipulated. However, on the information before it, the Council notes that the online demo used by the publication for the premise of the article, was limited in its purpose and designed only to demonstrate to potential purchasers, how age verification technology works in an online environment. The Council accepts that the demo was not designed to detect, as in this instance, the manipulation of an image. The Council also notes that it was clearly stated on Yoti’s website, that its ‘Anti spoofing software’ which is designed to detect the manipulation of an image, was not enabled on the demo. In this context, the Council considers it is misleading to state that technology used by Yoti to estimate age using facial analysis was “tricked” or “fooled”. The Council also considers that in context of an article that questions the fallibility of facial analysis technology, the article unfairly suggests that the technology used by Yoti is flawed. Accordingly, the Council concludes General Principles 1 and 3 were breached in these respects. As to corrective or remedial action, the Council considers the article is significantly misleading. While the Council recognises the remedial steps taken by the publication, the Council does not consider that this constituted adequate remedial action for the implication that the complainant’s technology can be “tricked” or “fooled”. The Council notes that even with the inclusion of the word “demo” in the headline and article and the additional clarification in the article, the article’s premise that the technology used by Yoti can be fooled remains misleading and unfair. The Council again notes that the demo used in support of the article’s premise that age estimation software is flawed, was designed for a different purpose. The Council notes that on the information before it, the publication has not offered the complainant with an opportunity for a subsequent reply. Accordingly, the Council concludes that General Principles 2 and 4 were breached.ace of swords the wild unknown

Garmin: Defying The Odds

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are shutting down CeeDee Lamb with two games remaining after their 2023 All-Pro receiver spent the second half of the season dealing with a sprained right shoulder. The team said Thursday that additional exams revealed enough damage to keep Lamb off the field Sunday at Philadelphia and in the final game at home against Washington. The team said surgery was not expected to be required. Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention a few hours before last weekend’s 26-24 victory over Tampa Bay. The decision on Lamb means the Cowboys will finish the regular season with at least five former Pro Bowlers on injured reserve. Among the others are quarterback Dak Prescott, who was limited to eight games before a season-ending hamstring tear, and right guard Zack Martin. The seven-time All-Pro made it through 10 games before deciding on season-ending ankle surgery. Lamb initially injured his right shoulder when it hit the turf hard twice in a 27-21 loss at Atlanta on Nov. 3. He kept playing and had at least 100 yards in each of his last two games — both victories — before getting shut down. The 25-year-old Lamb sat out the entire offseason and preseason in a contract dispute. The holdout finally ended with a $136 million, four-year extension in late August, but neither the Cowboys nor their star receiver could get that production going again this season. Dallas (7-8) is missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020, Lamb’s rookie year. Lamb finishes the season with 101 catches for 1,194 yards and six TDs. Wednesday’s doubleheader on Netflix set records as the most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history, with numbers nearly five times more than the NBA. The Baltimore Ravens’ 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans averaged 24.3 million while Kansas City’s 29-10 win at Pittsburgh averaged 24.1 according to early viewer figures released by Nielsen on Thursday. Nielsen also said there were 65 million U.S. viewers who tuned in for at least one minute of one of the two games. Both NFL games surpassed the previous mark of 23 million for last season’s AFC wild-card game between the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs on Peacock. The viewer figures include the audience on Netflix, mobile viewership on NFL+ and those who tuned in on CBS stations in Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore and Houston. The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Kenneth Walker III on injured reserve before their game against the Chicago Bears on Thursday because of an ankle injury. Walker hurt his ankle in last week’s loss to Minnesota and left that game after sitting out the previous two because of a calf problem. He also missed two weeks in September with an oblique issue. Walker ran for 573 yards and seven touchdowns on 153 carries. The Detroit Lions are bringing back Teddy Bridgewater to give the team a veteran backup quarterback for their playoff run. Coach Dan Campbell said Thursday that the team signed Bridgewater as another backup with second-year player Hendon Hooker behind starter Jared Goff. The Lions have clinched a playoff spot and can earn the top seed in the NFC with two more wins. Bridgewater, who was the backup in Detroit for the 2023 season, spent the fall coaching at his high school alma mater, leading Miami Northwestern High to the Florida Class 3A state title. Hooker has played in three games this season, completing 6 of 9 passes for 62 yards. San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in second-year kicker Jake Moody on Thursday, attributing some of the struggles to a high ankle sprain he suffered in his kicking leg earlier in the season. Moody, a third-round draft pick in 2023, missed his sixth field goal in the past seven games last week, leading to questions about whether the 49ers will need to replace him or at least bring in competition for next season. “I still feel the same about him, that I believe he is going to be our guy,” Shanahan said. Cornerback Riley Moss is “good to go” for the Denver Broncos’ crucial game at Cincinnati on Saturday. “He’s doing good,” coach Sean Payton said Thursday. “He’ll be ready to go.” The Broncos (9-6), who would end their eight-year playoff drought with a win or a tie against the Bengals (7-8), have sorely missed the second-year pro from Iowa since he sprained an MCL against Las Vegas in Week 12. The Broncos allowed 26.3 points per game during his absence. With Moss in the lineup opposite superstar Patrick Surtain II, Denver gave up just 16.8 points per game. BRIEFLY JETS: Receiver Davante Adams sat out practice Thursday with a hip ailment that makes his status for the game Sunday at Buffalo uncertain. EAGLES: Dealing with injuries to both quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Kenny Pickett, Philadelphia signed Ian Book to its practice squad. It’s unclear if he’ll be elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. VIKINGS: Minnesota’s defense appears set to return three players — safety Harrison Smith (foot), linebacker Ivan Pace Jr.(hamstring), and defensive tackle Jalen Redmond (concussion) — for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers after all three practiced fully Thursday. Pace, who has missed the past four games, appears in line to be activated from injured reserve.

Victoria Police are investigating an incident in the downtown core on Christmas Eve, involving a stolen vehicle that evaded officers before being recovered. Around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 24, officers received a call from the owners of a stolen vehicle that it had been spotted being driven downtown, Vic PD confirmed in an email to Victoria News. Officers located the vehicle and moved into position behind it. However, the driver ran a red light, which caused officers to end their pursuit for public safety reasons. Police located the stolen vehicle again, a few moments later, immobile. In an attempt to prevent the individual from fleeing further, officers executed a manoeuvre which resulted in the stolen vehicle losing one of its tires. Despite the damage, the vehicle managed to flee the scene on three wheels. The pursuit resumed as the stolen vehicle sped down some of Victoria's busiest arteries. Many social media users commented on the event and posted videos of the sighting. “Holy there is a guy driving a three-wheeled 4x4 down Douglas sparks flying with two dozen cops chasing them they almost hit us,” said Facebook user Takuma Valcourt. VicPD confirmed that the stolen vehicle was later recovered, and the investigation remains ongoing.AdvanSix (NYSE:ASIX) Stock Price Down 0.9% – Should You Sell?

Labour Minister and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma Top ministers yesterday outlined the Government’s progress in economic stability and debt restructuring plans and its proposed relief measures for the public. Labour Minister and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma at a press briefing held at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC), explained on efforts taken to stabilise the economy and initiatives way forward. In terms of economic stabilisation, Prof. Fernando stressed it is key to take the country out of the abyss created by past regimes. “At the time the Government assumed office those who are responsible for the crisis had unilaterally suspended external debt servicing in April 2022, entered into IMF program for Extended Fund Facility (EFF) of approximately $ 3 billion over a period of four years to be received in eight instalments, and paddled through the IMF program and debt restructuring process connected to in in line with debt sustainability analysis connected to it. The delayed and complex nature of the debt restructuring process incurred additional costs to the country and created additional burdens on the people. However after, considering both pros and cons of the context prevailed at that time in terms of social, political and economic perspective, the Government proceeded with the options in the best interest of the people of the country,” he said. He noted it was possible to reach the staff-level agreement of the third review on 26 November 2024, in line with the program parameters, and Government revenue measures with appropriate engagement, and timely facilitation. In the lead-up to the board approval from the IMF, the Government is engaging with necessary stakeholders to obtain the next tranche of the EFF. Regarding debt restructuring Prof. Fernando stated that it consists of both domestic and external restructuring. Domestic debt restructuring was completed in July 2023. External restructuring excludes multilateral creditors on various grounds and arguments. The rest consists of official bilateral debt and private ISB holders. He said the bilateral debt is dealt with the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) co-chaired by France, India and Japan representing 17 countries, China Exim Bank, China Development bank, other official creditors (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan) and other commercial creditors. “OCC had agreed to the terms and conditions in June 2024 and the loans with China Exim Bank had already been restructured in October 2023 within the agreed framework, ensuring comparability of treatment (CoT). Except the other official creditors (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan) accounting roughly $ 300 million representing about 1% total external debt subject restructuring , all other bilateral creditors have already agreed for restructuring within the agreed framework,” he explained. The Minister also noted that much delayed ISB restructuring had passed several stages of negotiations with agreements, disagreements, changes to proposals, adjustments in line with DSA and IMF consents, and had finally agreed in principle (AIP) on 19 September 2024 just two days prior to the presidential election. Ad Hoc Group (AHG) and Local Banking Consortium represent ISBs which account for $ 14.2 billion including a past due interest of $ 1.7 billion. “By prioritising and facilitating actions in a timely manner, the new Government has demonstrated a strong political commitment to steering the country toward economic stability. These efforts toward financial stability have been independently acknowledged by third parties, including rating agencies which have upgraded the ratings by several notches, which was only possible due to the correct prioritisation and implementation of economic stabilisation measures. Hence, the Government continued with the restructuring process and facilitated it to ensure the successful completion of the issuance of new bonds for the exchange of existing ones on 20 December 2024 in order to achieve the critical objective of stabilising the economy in pursue of navigating the country with the growth and development trajectory towards a thriving nation and beautiful life,” Prof. Fernando explained. In terms of the SME sector facilitation, Dr. Suriyapperuma elaborated on extending Parate law suspension. He said instead of merely postponing the Parate execution date, the Government engaged with stakeholder groups to ensure acceptable solutions were found for this long-standing issue. As a result, the Parate execution has now been extended until 31 March 2025. “The relief for businesses is not only in the form of an extension of time. Based on data provided by the Central Bank, 99% of borrowers with outstanding capital of less than Rs. 25 million in restructured loans have been granted a 12-month extension to renegotiate with banks and agree on a settlement path. Borrowers with debts between Rs. 25 and 50 million have been granted a nine-month extension, while all other borrowers are entitled to a six-month extension. This relief package, proposed by the Government and to be implemented through the Central Bank, also includes several other important measures, such as easing the credit rating status, extending the repayment period, offering low interest rates for restructured debt, and providing a transparent mechanism to resolve valuation disputes,” he explained. Dr. Suriyapperuma said the package aims to ensure that the SME sector can actively contribute to the economy. In terms of school stationary assistance for children particularly for Aswesuma recipient families, he said Rs. 6,000 per child has been allocated to purchase essential school books and stationery for the upcoming school term to ease the burden on parents from vulnerable groups in society. He also said children from families who are not currently receiving Aswesuma, but are facing economic hardship will also be provided with this benefit, based on recommendations from the Ministry of Education. “It is expected that the process will be finalised soon, and the disbursement scheme will start within a few days, ensuring that all deserving children facing economic hardship receive assistance,” Dr. Suriyapperuma assured. Will New Year's Eve be loud or quiet? His death was announced by Miami University in Ohio , where Schul shined on the track and was inducted into the school’s hall of fame in 1973. Schul predicted gold leading into the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and followed through with his promise. On a rainy day in Japan, he finished the final lap in a blistering 54.8 seconds to sprint to the win. His white shorts were covered in mud at the finish. He was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1991. He also helped write a book called “In the Long Run.” San Francisco Giants superstar Willie Mays poses for a photo during baseball spring training in 1972. Mays, the electrifying “Say Hey Kid” whose singular combination of talent, drive and exuberance made him one of baseball’s greatest and most beloved players, died June 18. He was 93. The center fielder, who began his professional career in the Negro Leagues in 1948, had been baseball’s oldest living Hall of Famer. He was voted into the Hall in 1979, his first year of eligibility, and in 1999 followed only Babe Ruth on The Sporting News’ list of the game’s top stars. The Giants retired his uniform number, 24, and set their AT&T Park in San Francisco on Willie Mays Plaza. Mays died two days before a game between the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals to honor the Negro Leagues at Rickwood Field in Birmingham , Alabama. Over 23 major league seasons, virtually all with the New York/San Francisco Giants but also including one in the Negro Leagues, Mays batted .301, hit 660 home runs, totaled 3,293 hits, scored more than 2,000 runs and won 12 Gold Gloves. He was Rookie of the Year in 1951, twice was named the Most Valuable Player and finished in the top 10 for the MVP 10 other times. His lightning sprint and over-the-shoulder grab of an apparent extra base hit in the 1954 World Series remains the most celebrated defensive play in baseball history. For millions in the 1950s and ’60s and after, the smiling ballplayer with the friendly, high-pitched voice was a signature athlete and showman during an era when baseball was still the signature pastime. Awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2015, Mays left his fans with countless memories. But a single feat served to capture his magic — one so untoppable it was simply called “The Catch.” Actor Donald Sutherland appears Oct. 13, 2017, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, Calif. Sutherland, the Canadian actor whose wry, arrestingly off-kilter screen presence spanned more than half a century of films from “M.A.S.H.” to “The Hunger Games,” died June 20. He was 88. Kiefer Sutherland said on X he believed his father was one of the most important actors in the history of film: “Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that.” The tall and gaunt Sutherland, who flashed a grin that could be sweet or diabolical, was known for offbeat characters like Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman's "M.A.S.H.," the hippie tank commander in "Kelly's Heroes" and the stoned professor in "Animal House." Before transitioning into a long career as a respected character actor, Sutherland epitomized the unpredictable, antiestablishment cinema of the 1970s. He never stopped working, appearing in nearly 200 films and series. Over the decades, Sutherland showed his range in more buttoned-down — but still eccentric — roles in Robert Redford's "Ordinary People" and Oliver Stone's "JFK." More, recently, he starred in the “Hunger Games” films. A memoir, “Made Up, But Still True,” is due out in November. Actor Bill Cobbs, a cast member in "Get Low," arrives July 27, 2010, at the premiere of the film in Beverly Hills, Calif. Cobbs, the veteran character actor who became a ubiquitous and sage screen presence as an older man, died June 25. He was 90. A Cleveland native, Cobbs acted in such films as “The Hudsucker Proxy,” “The Bodyguard” and “Night at the Museum.” He made his first big-screen appearance in a fleeting role in 1974's “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three." He became a lifelong actor with some 200 film and TV credits. The lion share of those came in his 50s, 60s, and 70s, as filmmakers and TV producers turned to him again and again to imbue small but pivotal parts with a wizened and worn soulfulness. Cobbs appeared on television shows including “The Sopranos," “The West Wing,” “Sesame Street” and “Good Times.” He was Whitney Houston's manager in “The Bodyguard” (1992), the mystical clock man of the Coen brothers' “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994) and the doctor of John Sayles' “Sunshine State” (2002). He played the coach in “Air Bud” (1997), the security guard in “Night at the Museum” (2006) and the father on “The Gregory Hines Show." Cobbs rarely got the kinds of major parts that stand out and win awards. Instead, Cobbs was a familiar and memorable everyman who left an impression on audiences, regardless of screen time. He won a Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding limited performance in a daytime program for the series “Dino Dana” in 2020. Independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman speaks with the media Nov. 7, 2009, at his campaign headquarters in Austin, Texas. The singer, songwriter, satirist and novelist, who led the alt-country band Texas Jewboys, toured with Bob Dylan, sang with Willie Nelson, and dabbled in politics with campaigns for Texas governor and other statewide offices, died June 27. He was 79 and had suffered from Parkinson's disease. Often called “The Kinkster" and sporting sideburns, a thick mustache and cowboy hat, Friedman earned a cult following and reputation as a provocateur throughout his career across musical and literary genres. In the 1970s, his satirical country band Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys wrote songs with titles such as “They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore” and “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in Bed.” Friedman joined part of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1976. By the 1980s, Friedman was writing crime novels that often included a version of himself, and he wrote a column for Texas Monthly magazine in the 2000s. Friedman's run at politics brought his brand of irreverence to the serious world of public policy. In 2006, Friedman ran for governor as an independent in a five-way race that included incumbent Republican Rick Perry. Friedman launched his campaign against the backdrop of the Alamo. Martin Mull participates in "The Cool Kids" panel during the Fox Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Aug. 2, 2018, at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Mull, whose droll, esoteric comedy and acting made him a hip sensation in the 1970s and later a beloved guest star on sitcoms including “Roseanne” and “Arrested Development,” died June 28. He was 80. Mull, who was also a guitarist and painter, came to national fame with a recurring role on the Norman Lear-created satirical soap opera “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” and the starring role in its spinoff, “Fernwood Tonight." His first foray into show business was as a songwriter, penning the 1970 semi-hit “A Girl Named Johnny Cash” for singer Jane Morgan. He would combine music and comedy in an act that he brought to hip Hollywood clubs in the 1970s. Mull often played slightly sleazy, somewhat slimy and often smarmy characters as he did as Teri Garr's boss and Michael Keaton's foe in 1983's “Mr. Mom.” He played Colonel Mustard in the 1985 movie adaptation of the board game “Clue,” which, like many things Mull appeared in, has become a cult classic. Gross NPAs of PSU banks drop to 3.1% from 14.6% in '18 MUMBAI: The gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio of public sector banks dropped to a record low of 3.1% as of Sept 2024 - down from 14.6% in March 2018, according to a government statement. This improvement follows the implementation of the 4R's strategy introduced in 2015: Recognising NPAs transparently, resolution & recovery, recapitalisation, and reforms in the financial system. PSBs have also strengthened their capital adequacy, with the capital-to-risk-weighted assets ratio improving to 15.4% in Sept 2024 from 11.5% in March 2015. Their aggregate net profit for FY24 hit Rs 1.4 lakh crore, a rise from Rs 1.1 lakh crore in the year-ago period. Over three years, PSBs distributed Rs 61,964 crore in dividends, reflecting improved shareholder returns. Inclusivity efforts have expanded as well, with 1,00,686 of 1,60,501 bank branches located in rural and semi-urban areas. Flagship schemes like Mudra and PM-SVANidhi have increased access to credit, benefiting women and underserved groups. Advances to MSMEs grew at an annual rate of 15%, reaching Rs 28 lakh crore in March this year. To support employees, govt introduced transparent transfer policies, revised salaries under the 12th Bipartite Settlement, enhanced pensions, and increased staff welfare funds. These reforms have created a more robust and efficient workforce, ensuring PSBs remain competitive and financially sound, the statement said. RBI's asset quality review, stricter provisioning for stressed loans, and enhanced recovery efforts played key roles in addressing NPAs. Along with these, improved asset management practices and reduced fresh NPA generation have bolstered PSBs' financial health. Ready to Master Stock Valuation? ace of wands the wild unknown
ace of wands the wild unknown The Prime Minister insisted the UK will back Ukraine “for as long as it takes” as he made a speech at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London, but for the first time acknowledged the conflict could move towards a negotiated end. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has in recent weeks suggested he is open to a possible ceasefire with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Kyiv and its European allies meanwhile fear the advent of Donald Trump’s return to the White House could result in American aid being halted. President-elect Trump has said he would prefer to move towards a peace deal, and has claimed he could end the conflict on “day one” of his time in power. As he attempts to strike up a good relationship with the incoming president, Sir Keir revealed he had told Mr Trump the UK “will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come”. In his speech at London’s Guildhall, the Prime Minister said there is “no question it is right we support Ukraine”, as the UK’s aid to Kyiv is “deeply in our self-interest”. Allowing Russia to win the war would mean “other autocrats would believe they can follow Putin’s example,” he warned. Sir Keir added: “So we must continue to back Ukraine and do what it takes to support their self-defence for as long as it takes. “To put Ukraine in the strongest possible position for negotiations so they can secure a just and lasting peace on their terms that guarantees their security, independence, and right to choose their own future.” Mr Zelensky told Sky News over the weekend he would be open to speaking with Mr Putin, but branded the Russian president a “terrorist”. He also suggested Ukrainian territory under his control should be taken under the “Nato umbrella” to try to stop the “hot stage” of the war with Russia. In a banquet speech focused on foreign affairs, the Prime Minister said it was “plain wrong” to suggest the UK must choose between its allies, adding: “I reject it utterly. “(Clement) Attlee did not choose between allies. (Winston) Churchill did not choose. “The national interest demands that we work with both.” Sir Keir said the UK and the US were “intertwined” when it came to commerce, technology and security. The Prime Minister added: “That’s why, when President Trump graciously hosted me for dinner in Trump Tower, I told him that we will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come.” He also repeated his commitment to “rebuild our ties with Europe” and insisted he was right to try to build closer links with China. “It is remarkable that until I met President Xi last month there had been no face-to-face meeting between British and Chinese leaders for six years,” the Prime Minister said. “We can’t simply look the other way. We need to engage. To co-operate, to compete and to challenge on growth, on security concerns, on climate as well as addressing our differences in a full and frank way on issues like Hong Kong, human rights, and sanctions on our parliamentarians,” he added. The Prime Minister said he wants Britain’s role in the world to be that of “a constant and responsible actor in turbulent times”. He added: “To be the soundest ally and to be determined, always, in everything we do. “Every exchange we have with other nations, every agreement we enter into to deliver for the British people and show, beyond doubt, that Britain is back.” Ahead of Sir Keir’s speech, Lord Mayor Alastair King urged the Prime Minister and his Government to loosen regulations on the City of London to help it maintain its competitive edge. Quarterback Jalen Hurts bundled over from a yard to set the Eagles on their way and a touchdown late in the second quarter from Devonta Smith saw NFC East leaders Philadelphia in front 14-10, only for Chuba Hubbard to drive in from a yard out and edge the visitors ahead again. Hopes of an upset, though, were dashed when tight end Grant Calcaterra took a four-yard pass and Saquon Barkley’s conversion saw the Eagles maintain their position as the number two team in the NFC, behind the Detroit Lions. The Pittsburgh Steelers ran out 27-14 winners over AFC North rivals the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers took a 13-7 half-time lead following a Najee Harris touchdown and two Chris Boswell field goals, and further touchdowns from Van Jefferson and Pat Freiermuth made the game safe despite David Njoku’s brilliant touchdown catch. The Minnesota Vikings improved their record to 11-2 with a sixth straight win, 42-21 over the Atlanta Falcons . Jordan Addison caught three touchdowns and Justin Jefferson two, the latter ending a two-month drought, before Aaron Jones ran in to put the result beyond doubt. Quarterback Sam Darnold threw for a career-high 347 yards. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took the outright lead of the NFC South with a 28-13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders at Raymond James Stadium, where Baker Mayfield threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns. Jalen McMillan and Rachaad White scored twice each while Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell ran in a one-yard score but was later forced off injured and replaced by third-stringer Desmond Ridder. The Miami Dolphins kept their outside play-off hopes alive after battling to a 32-26 win over the New York Jets after overtime at Hard Rock Stadium. An early touchdown from De’Von Achane and three field goals from Jason Sanders – one from 57 yards – had the Dolphins ahead 15-13 at half-time. Davante Adams responded as the Jets looked to end an eight-game losing streak but Tyreek Hill’s score helped extend the game into overtime, when Tua Tagovailoa picked out Jonnu Smith to seal a dramatic victory. The New Orleans Saints ground out a 14-11 win over the New York Giants while the Jacksonville Jaguars edged AFC South rivals the Tennessee Titans 10-6 in Nashville to snap a five-match losing streak.

(AP) — Tampa Bay’s bid for a fourth straight NFC South title and fifth consecutive playoff berth is gaining momentum. Back-to-back wins over a pair of last-place teams , combined with Atlanta’s three-game losing streak, have propelled the Bucs (6-6) to a tie atop the division. Although the Falcons (6-6) hold a tiebreaker after sweeping the season series between the teams, Tampa Bay can control its own destiny by finishing strong against a less than imposing schedule. The Bucs, who are back in the thick of the race after beating the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers, figure to be favored in four of their five remaining games. “Every week, we said it’s a playoff game, we got to take care of us. It’s not going to be easy. As it was (Sunday), it’s going to be a dog fight every week,” coach Todd Bowles said after Sunday’s 26-23 overtime win at Carolina. “We got to clean up some things, we know that, but it's hard to win in this league,” the coach said of the mistake-filled victory that lifted the Bucs back to .500. “We’ll take a win any way we can get it.” After facing Las Vegas (2-10) this week, the Bucs will finish with road games against the Los Angeles Chargers (8-4) and Dallas Cowboys (5-7), followed by home dates vs. Carolina (3-9) and the New Orleans Saints (4-8). Kicker Chase McLaughlin has been one of team’s most consistent performers, converting 21 of 23 field goal attempts. He was 4 of 5 against the Panthers, including 51-yarder to force overtime on the final play of regulation. He missed from 55 yards in OT before winning it with a 30-yard field goal on Tampa Bay’s next possession. Just when it appeared the defense was beginning to trend in the right direction, Carolina's Bryce Young threw for 298 yards without an interception against the Bucs in one of his better outings of the season. “In the first half, he did it with his feet and the second half he did it with his arm,” Bowles said. Running back Bucky Irving rushed for a career-best 152 yards and finished with 185 from scrimmage against Carolina, making him the first rookie since Miles Sanders in 2019 to have consecutive games with 150-plus yards from scrimmage. A week after playing well offensively and defensively in a 23-point rout of the New York Giants, the Bucs were sloppy against the Panthers. In addition to throwing two interceptions, Mayfield was sacked four times. Tampa Bay was penalized seven times for 54 yards, and the defense was only able to sack Young once. Mayfield (sore leg), linebacker K.J. Britt (sprained ankle) and safety Mike Edwards (hamstring) will be on the injury report this week. Bowles said he’s not sure what Mayfield's practice status will be when the team reconvenes Wednesday, however he expects the quarterback to play Sunday. 37 and 101 — Wide receiver Mike Evans had another big day against Carolina, posting the 37th 100-yard receiving performance of his career — fifth among active players. He also moved ahead of Hall of Famers Steve Largent and Tim Brown for sole possession of ninth place on the all-time list for TD receptions with 101. The Buccaneers host Las Vegas in Tampa Bay's first home game in a month and the third consecutive outing against a last-place team. The Raiders (2-10) have lost eight in a row. ace of wild Trump supporters bashed his Friday selection of Dr. Janette Nesheiwat for United States Surgeon General, citing her past positions on Covid-19, though some praised her apparent evolution on the subject. Trump announced the pick Friday, calling Nesheiwat, a medical doctor and former Fox News contributor, “a strong communicator for preventive medicine and public health.” While the President-elect showered praise on Dr. Nesheiwat, some of his biggest supporters decried her selection and demanded that he reconsider. Nesheiwat’s praise for Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to censor certain Covid information on Facebook seemingly irked popular right-wing social media figures like former One America News Network anchor Liz Wheeler and influential meme account “I Meme Therefore I Am” “First of all, vaccines save lives and I am so excited and I thank and I commend Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg for taking action because this affects everyone,” Nesheiwat said during an appearance on Fox Business Network. BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP via Getty Images Conservative lawyer Julie Hamill replied to the video, calling the pick “totally unacceptable.” Nesheiwat was also once an advocate for masking during the pandemic, a position Wheeler criticized as a “dealbreaker. And that’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending that if you’re gonna be in a classroom, in a crowded classroom, then you want to protect yourself, wear a mask,” Nesheiwat told then-Fox News host Pete Hegseth in an August 2021 appearance. “It’s important to point out, though, masking is not the only solution. We also need to make sure that we have good ventilation, that people are washing their hands, that they’re getting tested and that all the teachers are getting vaccinated as well,” she also said in the appearance. (RELATED: American Kids In Crisis: Daily Caller’s ‘Do No Harm’ To Expose Fallout Of The Transgender Movement) Wheeler took particular issue with this, publicly calling for Nesheiwat to withdraw her candidacy in a Sunday tweet. “Dr. Janette Nesheiwat bashes Dr. Joseph Ladapo because Ladapo followed scientific evidence that masks don’t work. Nesheiwat should withdraw. She’s not a leader. She’s a sheep. She mindlessly parroted ‘the experts’ covid tyranny,” Wheeler wrote. While writing in February 2021 that Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna were “a gift from God” and praising them as “our path out of the pandemic,” Nesheiwat later blasted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for adding the vaccine to the childhood schedule. “There’s no good reason to have a vaccine that can’t stop disease, can’t stop transmission of disease, on this schedule of vaccination ... One video the account posted shared a video of her criticizing “politicized” Covid mandates. While many seemingly-MAGA faithful were still critical, some responded positively to her more recent comments. “Good start – a lot of question marks for this candidate, so far so good,” one user wrote in response. “I’m glad you guys are listening to us. Her positions on these issues back in 2020 were trash,” another said . The more recent comments appear to move her positions closer to those of Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Republican presidential nominee, former U.S. President Donald Trump shake hands during a campaign rally at Desert Diamond Arena on August 23, 2024 in Glendale, Arizona. Kennedy announced today that he was suspending his presidential campaign and supporting former President Trump. In addition to being a Fox News contributor, Dr. Nesheiwat served as medical director for the clinic chain CityMD. Her sister, Julia, is married to Trump’s pick for National Security Advisor Rep. Michael Waltz . Julia Nesheiwat is a current member of the Atlantic Council. She previously served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Advisory Council and was an international relations fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, according to her U.S. State Department biography . Kennedy Jr. has been critical of both the Atlantic Council and the Council on Foreign Relations. He said these organizations have significant influence on foreign policy, citing U.S. and NATO involvement in the war between Ukraine Russia as an example. He then took aim at advisory committees, saying they wield undue influence over U.S. public health policy. “If you look at the people who sit on it, they’re all people who are profiting from, you know ... not from making people healthier, but from making ... from a sick country, a country that’s constantly at war and a country that is doing the opposite of what its ideals say it’s supposed to be doing,” Kennedy told comedian Andrew Schulz. If confirmed, Nesheiwat will have an important role in the administration as the public-facing Surgeon General. However, she will still report to the assistant secretary for health, a role which Trump has yet to designate a candidate for. The role is currently occupied by Biden appointee Admiral Rachel Levine .
