Amid a fall season characterized by restive shareholders seeking an activist bid to unseat senior management and change the trajectory of the company, Pfizer ( PFE 2.29% ) is communicating that everything is under control. Per its updated forecast for its 2024 and 2025 fiscal years on Dec. 17, the overarching message is that the pharma will continue to seek to control its costs while bolstering its portfolio of medicines as usual. But does that make the stock a buy, or is there reason to be cautious? Let's dig into the details here and make a judgment. This new forecast is a mixed bag To begin, let's compare the new outlook issued by management for 2025 with its recent performance to get a sense of how significant the coming 12 months will be for shareholders. Pfizer's trailing-12-month (TTM) revenue is $59.3 billion, whereas its TTM normalized diluted earnings per share (EPS) is $1.55. Per the updated projection for next year, the business anticipates bringing in revenue of as much as $64 billion, and adjusted diluted EPS of between $2.80 and $3.00. But here's where shareholders are apt to frown. According to the reaffirmed forecast for this year, 2024, the company expects to bring in as much as $64 billion in revenue, and as much as $2.95 in adjusted diluted EPS. See the issue? Even if things go well enough that sales and earnings end up in the upper ranges of management's forecasts, there won't be much in the way of top or bottom-line growth between 2024 and 2025. That means management's plan to implement $500 million in cost savings in 2025 will hardly make a dent. On the bright side, a separate cost-savings campaign dedicated to manufacturing specifically is expected to start to deliver in the second half of 2025, so that might make 2026 a bit better from an earnings perspective. Plus, the overlapping forecast for 2024 and 2025 are, to an extent, a mirage; after removing non-recurring items from this year's forecast performance, Pfizer thinks that its revenue could grow by as much as 5% and its adjusted diluted EPS by as much as 18% in 2025. Still, that isn't actually very reassuring, as management is frank that performing at the lower ends of its estimates would result in zero revenue growth and just 10% EPS growth year over year. The long term looks a bit better than the near term What should investors make of this update from management? For one, there hasn't been much discussion of how the business is going to grow faster in the near future than it is today, which suggests no upcoming major changes in strategy. The previously established goals of becoming more efficient, becoming a world leader in oncology drugs, and continuing to return capital to shareholders while reducing the company's debt burden are still in progress. Likewise, research and development (R&D) activities will continue to be fully funded, and while it hasn't been explicitly mentioned, there is a high probability that Pfizer will continue to look for opportunities to acquire promising biotechs or their pharmaceutical assets to bolster the pipeline. More importantly, shareholders need to brace themselves for another year of the stock being in the doldrums. There's no obvious pending catalyst that would enable big price appreciation. At the same time, if you're interested in collecting a dividend with a toothsome forward yield of 6.7%, right now looks like a great time to buy more shares or invest for the first time -- except for the fact that Pfizer is paying out significantly more than it's generating in earnings; its payout ratio is a lofty 223%. The risk of the dividend getting cut is not very high at the moment, but if weak growth continues for a couple of years longer, it could be on the table, especially if there's an unlucky run of late-stage programs that fail in the pipeline. With all of the above in mind, this stock is still worth buying, provided that you're willing to hold onto it through the slow period ahead. Just be aware that the risk is higher here than it would normally be with a big pharma stock, as this giant looks like it's moving slower than its shareholders might prefer.Croatia's president faces conservative rival in election run-offMilan coach Fonseca slams referee after defeat by Atalanta
Energy Advocates Condemn Collapse Of $1.5bn Port Harcourt RefineryUnder fire from congressional Republicans about one of the darkest moments of Joe Biden’s presidency, Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended the administration’s handling of the disastrous U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying Democrats struggled to make the best of a bad pullout deal struck by Donald Trump. Blinken testified Wednesday before the Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee, facing questions and angry criticism from lawmakers for the final time in office. The top U.S. diplomat was expected to leave for the Middle East in the afternoon, but the back-and-forth with members, specifically Republicans who admonished the chaotic withdrawal as his defining legacy, delayed his departure. RELATED STORY | House GOP report blames Biden-Harris for chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan Blinken said much of the blame for the sudden collapse of Afghanistan's U.S.-allied government and the chaotic August 2021 evacuation of Americans that followed rested with a withdrawal deal President Trump had reached with the Taliban in 2020 before leaving office. “To the extent President Biden faced a choice, it was between ending the war or escalating it,” Blinken told lawmakers. “Had he not followed through on his predecessor’s commitment, attacks on our forces and allies would have resumed and the Taliban’s assault on the country’s major cities would have commenced.” But McCaul and other Republican lawmakers portrayed Blinken and the Biden administration as ill-prepared and disengaged as the disaster grew, and intent on minimizing mounting evidence that the Taliban would complete a takeover of the country before the last U.S. troops departed. “This catastrophic event was the beginning of a failed foreign policy that lit the world on fire,” McCaul, a Texas Republican, said. He urged Blinken to take “accountability for the disastrous withdrawal.” It was clear “it was going to be a disaster,” said Florida Republican Rep. Brian Mast, who will take over as chairman of the committee in the next Congress. RELATED STORY | Where asylum seekers stand, 2 years after the war in Afghanistan The hearing came at the end of Blinken's diplomatic service under Biden, with six weeks left before Trump takes office, and at the end of McCaul's time leading the Foreign Affairs committee. It served as a capstone to nearly four years of animosity between the two over the end of America's longest war. “For my part, I’ve been determined to learn the lessons from this experience, not only to learn them, but to act on them,” Blinken said. He added, “We’ve made the State Department stronger and better able to respond to crises than it was when we found it, or it was during the Afghan evacuation.” There was little new ground broken on the U.S. withdrawal, after years of blame-trading between Republicans and Democrats. Blinken pointed Wednesday to the planned 2026 release of a government-appointed Afghanistan war commission's review as the best prospect of an independent full report on the disastrous events of the summer of 2021. The 20-year U.S. military occupation of Afghanistan succeeded in routing the al-Qaida militants responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, whom Afghanistan's fundamentalist Taliban militants had allowed a home. But as the U.S. began its pullout, as set by Trump's deal and carried out by Biden, Taliban fighters routed the U.S.-allied government and military, capturing control of the country within months. An extremist group's bombing at the Kabul airport killed 13 U.S. service members and nearly 200 Afghans as Americans, Afghan allies and others thronged the airport in hopes of seats on the last U.S. military-run flights out. Blinken testified Wednesday that all of the “hundreds” of Americans and dual citizens stranded by the sudden scramble from Afghanistan have now been able to leave, if they have chosen. RELATED STORY | Biden review of chaotic Afghan withdrawal blames Trump He opened his appearance before the committee by turning to families of U.S. forces killed in the withdrawal and expressing condolences. Protesters repeatedly interrupted his comments, crying out “scum” and “genocide,” before security cleared the room of them. Blinken denied Republican charges that he and others ignored warnings from lower-ranking administration officials that the U.S. withdrawal would go badly wrong, and that the U.S. had to move faster on getting out Americans and the Afghans who had worked for and allied with them. “We anticipated that Kabul would remain in the hands of the Afghan government” through the end of the year, Blinken said. “This unfolded more quickly than we anticipated including in the intelligence community.” “Waiting until the last minute is not executing a plan,” McCaul said. Blinken's testimony came months after House Republicans issued a scathing report on their investigation into the withdrawal, blaming the disastrous end on Biden’s administration. They played down Trump's role in the failures even though he had signed the withdrawal deal with the Taliban. Previous investigations and analyses by a government-appointed special investigator for Afghanistan and some private policy groups have pointed to a systemic failure spanning the last four presidential administrations and concluded that Biden and Trump share the heaviest blame.Chandigarh, Dec 22 (PTI) Punjab has sought Rs 1,000 crore Central assistance to strengthen its police infrastructure and security efforts in the border districts, among a slew of other demands, at a pre-budget meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held in Jaisalmer, an official statement said on Sunday. Industrial incentives similar to those provided to Jammu and Kashmir and the neighbouring hill states were also sought to support the MSMEs in Punjab's border and sub-mountainous regions, a Punjab government statement said on Sunday. Quoting Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, the statement said the state has strongly raised the demand to restore NABARD's Short-Term Seasonal Agricultural Operations (ST-SAO) limit to Rs 3,041 crore, from the reduced limit of Rs 1,100 crore, for FY 2024-25. Cheema said this restoration is vital to prevent farmers from turning to moneylenders, aligning with the 'Sahakar se Samriddhi' principle. Several states raised this issue which was discussed at length, he added. For road connectivity under PM Gati Shakti in Rajpura, the Punjab government has requested Rs 100 crore to construct a 5.6 km long, 45 mt wide approach road connecting NH-44 to the integrated manufacturing cluster (IMC) in Rajpura. This funding is essential for the timely completion of road construction and the successful implementation of the industrial cluster, Cheema said. Referring to the Vande Bharat train connecting Amritsar with New Delhi, Punjab government requested for a similar train to connect Bathinda, Punjab's agricultural and commercial hub, with the national capital to ensure seamless connectivity for the Malwa region of the state. Cheema also proposed financial support to address crop residue management in Punjab, saying despite providing 1.45 lakh crop residue management (CRM) machines since 2018, high operational costs remain a challenge. The Punjab government has proposed an incentive of Rs 2,500 per acre, with Rs 2,000 per acre from the Centre and Rs 500 per acre from the state, as per the statement. Out of the total estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore for this initiative, the government of India has been requested to provide Rs 1,600 crore as budgetary support, the statement said. Cheema also requested the Centre for a special budgetary allocation for paddy diversification, saying diversifying cultivation across 10 lakh hectares could result in substantial savings of more than Rs 30,000 crore. The Punjab government has proposed allocating a portion of these savings towards a comprehensive diversification package, Cheema said. For the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) scheme, Cheema proposed enhancing the grant from Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per beneficiary to accommodate rising construction costs. The minister also highlighted the need to release pending funds under the National Health Mission (NHM) amounting to Rs 1,119 crore, besides requesting an increase in the honorarium for cook-cum-helpers under the PM Poshan Abhiyaan from Rs 600 to Rs 2,000 per month. Additionally, Punjab sought support for urban transportation, requesting Rs 300 crore for the procurement of 250 electric buses and the installation of charging points. The state also called for reimbursement of procurement costs by the government of India, modernisation of driving licence testing with advanced technology, and reimbursement of pending rural development fee (RDF) amounting to Rs 6,857 crore. Expressing gratitude to Sitharaman for giving Punjab the opportunity to present its suggestions, Cheema said the state's demand for an incentive package to address the unique challenges faced by it, particularly due to its proximity to a hostile border with Pakistan, is crucial to bolster infrastructure and security measures. He also expressed hope that the upcoming Union Budget will act as a catalyst for fostering citizen welfare, driving regional development, and spurring economic growth, the statement said. CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders re-signed veteran kicker Rene Paredes on Wednesday while also restructuring quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.'s deal. Calgary signed Paredes to a two-year contract extension. The Canadian was scheduled to become a free agent in February. The Stampeders acquired Adams last month from the B.C. Lions. The club and player agreed to terms on a restructured contract for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. "The restructured contract will give us more salary-cap flexibility to sign free agents and retain our own players who will be eligible for free agency in February,” Dave Dickenson, Calgary's head coach and general manager, said in a statement. “Vernon remains under contract for the next two seasons and we’re excited to have him in Calgary.” Adams, an eight-year CFL veteran, posted a 6-3 record last season with B.C., completing 197-of-302 passes (65.2 per cent) for 2,929 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He recorded six 300-yard passing games while also rushing for 213 yards and three TDs in 40 attempts. He completed 20-of-33 passes for 317 yards with two TDs and three interceptions in B.C.'s 28-19 West Division semifinal loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Paredes, a six-time all-star, has played 13 seasons with Calgary — ranking him fourth all-time in franchise history in terms of longevity — and his 229 regular-season games place him second in the Stampeders record books. He made 41 of his 44 field-goal attempts (93.2-per-cent success rate) over 18 games in 2024. Paredes has played 248 career regular-season and post-season games for the Stampeders since signing as a free agent in 2011. His 2,286 career regular-season points place him eighth on the CFL’s all-time list and he was part of Grey Cup-winning teams in 2014 and 2018. “I’m very excited to be back with the organization,” Paredes said in a release. “My family and I love the city and it’s a blessing to have spent my entire career as a Stampeder. The last two seasons have been a challenge for us as a team but I’m looking forward to doing everything I can to help turn things around.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 11, 2024. Q. I recently retired as a customer service specialist in the healthcare industry. I loved my work, the connection to people and feeling I made a difference. I have been slow to look for volunteer work. When I finally decided to do so, I could not find the right fit. Any suggestions? L.G Great news, you made the decision to volunteer. In addition to doing good for individuals or organizations, volunteering in later life has many personal benefits, and that’s for the volunteer. Here are a few reasons to volunteer: Promotes physical and mental health. We know aging ultimately is a declining and gradual process. Volunteering can counter the risk of decline of one’s physical health, reducing risks of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment and even mortality. That’s according to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine . The National Institute on Aging reports that volunteering also can affect cognitive aging by keeping the brain engaged, thereby lowering the risk of dementia. Prevents loneliness. Social isolation is a major challenge for many older adults and is considered a public health crisis , according to the U.S. Surgeon General. Volunteering can be part of the solution by providing opportunities to socialize and even make best friends. It can support those suffering from depression. Those who volunteer report their depression is shorter compared to those who do not volunteer, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service . Provides a feeling of purpose. For many, retirement can be a period of relief and at the same time, uncertainty about one’s purpose. In the workplace, purpose typically is well defined. In retirement, not so much. Volunteering can be a reason to get up in the morning, to make a difference or have an opportunity to learn something new. It can help a person feel recharged and needed. Reduces the rate of aging. Individuals age at different rates. According to a study by Associate Professor Cal Halverson at Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, even a small amount of volunteering is linked to slowing the acceleration of biological aging among retirees, even more than for working folks. Volunteers in the study just aged a bit slower. Bridges the generation gap. Interacting with younger generations provides older adults the opportunity to share life lessons. At the same time, younger generations can offer older adults a new way of looking at life that incudes technology. Respect and affirmation are most often shared by both. Here are a few resources that promote intergenerational relationships. CoGenerate, a nonprofit organization, features new multigenerational initiatives and research. See https://cogenerate.org/ . Then there is Sages and Seekers that connects young people with vetted older mentors for weekly virtual conversations. Eldera is a global virtual village where generations come together to connect, learn from each other, have fun and at the same time, create a better future. Now ask yourself a few questions. What do I love to do? Is it working with older adults, children or those with challenges? Do I prefer an outdoor volunteer experience as opposed to spending time in an office, workroom or even remotely. Do I want a hands-on experience or working at a board or policy level?? How many hours a week or days do I want? Am I comfortable making a commitment? Most communities are rich with volunteer resources. One example is the South Bay, Harbor and Long Beach Volunteer Center. It connects volunteers to over 20 organizations that need and welcome volunteers in areas of gardening, education, those with special needs, history and the arts. Also check out Volunteer Match with opportunities linked to your geographic area. AmeriCorps Seniors , a network of volunteer programs for Americans 55 years and older, is another option. Volunteers work in their community and are engaged in academic tutoring and mentoring, elder care, disaster relief, and more. They also are the umbrella organization for the Foster Grandparent Program, RSVP and Senior Companion Program. And don’t forget to check volunteer opportunities at your local hospital, library, school district, botanical gardens as well as art museums. Use your network. If you know someone who has an interesting volunteer position or experience, meet with that individual and learn about possibilities. Finding the right volunteer position takes research, networking and more than that, it involves taking a risk. Know you have nothing to lose. One thing is clear, whatever you chose, you are bringing your life experience and knowledge with you. So, before you even begin, you are an asset. Stay well, enjoy the holiday season and know, “No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of others.” ~ Joseph Addison, English poet, playwright and politician. Seechewal spoke to Ludhiana deputy commissioner, municipal corporation and Punjab Pollution Control Board officials over phone and asked them to strictly stop poisonous water falling into the river. He has also made it clear to the administrative officials that in the second phase of the ‘kar seva’, a front had been opened to stop dirty and poisonous water falling into the Buddha Dariya. It is worth noting that during the first phase of ‘Buddha Dariya kar seva’, which started on Feb 2, a large number of saplings were planted on its banks and roads were constructed to reach the river. On Sunday, Akhand Paath Sahib was started before the ‘kar seva’ of the Buddha Dariya at Gau Ghat Gurdwara. During this, Seechewal took stock of the dirty water falling into Buddha Dariya and also inspected the direct and indirect dirty and poisonous water of dairies and factories. He said by calling Buddha Dariya as Buddha Nullah, many are denying the existence of the river itself. He appealed to the environmentalists to come forward to restore the ancient form of the river. Seechewal has appealed to the people of Punjab that restoring the ancient heritage of Buddha Dariya was the moral duty and religion of every Punjabi. He added that the youth had immense power and they should come forward for this work. Seechewal said twice in 2008 and 2011, poisonous and dirty water of Kala Sanghian drain was stopped with the help of people as this poisonous water was becoming a cause of cancer. This water falls into Sutlej through Chitti Bei and then goes to Malwa and Rajasthan through Harike Patan where people are forced to drink this poisonous water without treatment. Seechewal also expressed happiness that recently people had come out on the streets for their rights against the poisonous and dirty water falling into the Buddha Dariya. He said he had always been saying that till the time people do not become aware, rivers and drains of Punjab could not be cleaned. We also published the following articles recently Not just Buddha Dariya, Sidhwan is polluted too Ludhiana's Sidhwan Canal pollution persists as a key election issue, impacting residents' health and leisure. Despite past cleanup efforts and temporary challaning, illegal dumping continues. Residents and candidates advocate for increased patrolling, CCTV surveillance, and community involvement to restore the canal and potentially utilize it for drinking water. Effluents in Buddha Dariya: NGT asks PPCB to explain The National Green Tribunal (NGT) questioned Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) over allowing Bahadur K Road Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) to discharge effluents into Buddha Dariya, violating environmental clearance terms.
