NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Scottie Scheffler brought a new putting grip to the Hero World Challenge and felt enough improvement to be satisfied with the result, a 5-under 67 that left him three shots behind Cameron Young on Thursday. Young was playing for the first time since the BMW Championship more than three months ago and found great success on and around the greens of Albany Golf Club, chipping beautifully and holing four birdie putts from 15 feet or longer for his 64. He led by two shots over Justin Thomas in his first competition since his daughter was born a few weeks ago. Thomas ran off four straight birdies late in his round and was a fraction of an inch away with a fifth. The big surprise was Scheffler, the No. 1 player in golf who looked as good as he has all year in compiling eight victories, including an Olympic gold medal. His iron play has no equal. His putting at times has kept him from winning more or winning bigger. He decided to try to a “saw” putting grip from about 20 feet or closer — the putter rests between his right thumb and his fingers, with his left index finger pointed down the shaft. “I’m always looking for ways to improve,” Scheffler said. Scheffler last year began working with renowned putting instructor Phil Kenyon, and he says Kenyon mentioned the alternative putting grip back then. “But it was really our first time working together and it’s something that’s different than what I’ve done in the past,” Scheffler said. “This year I had thought about it from time to time, and it was something that we had just said let’s table that for the end of the season, take a look at it. “Figured this is a good week to try stuff.” He opened with a wedge to 2 feet and he missed a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-5 third. But he holed a birdie from about the same distance at the next par 5, No. 6, and holed a sliding 6-footer on the ninth to save par. His longest putt was his last hole, from 12 feet for a closing birdie. “I really enjoyed the way it felt,” he said. “I felt like I’m seeing some improvements in my stroke.” Young, regarded as the best active player without a PGA Tour victory, is treating this holiday tournament as the start of a new season. He worked on getting stronger and got back to the basics in his powerful golf swing. And on this day, he was dialed in with his short game. He only struggled to save par twice and kept piling up birdies in his bogey-free round on an ideal day in the Bahamas. “The wind wasn’t blowing much so it was relatively stress-free,” Young said. Patrick Cantlay, along with Scheffler playing for the first time since the Presidents Cup, also was at 67 with Ludvig Aberg, Akshay Bhatia and Sahith Theegala. Thomas also took this occasion to do a little experimenting against a 20-man field. He has using a 46-inch driver at home — a little more than an inch longer than his regular driver — in a bid to gain more speed. On a day with little wind, on a golf course with some room off the tee, he decided to put it in play. “Just with it being a little bit longer, I just kind of have to get the club out in front of me and get on top of it a little bit more,” Thomas said. “I drove the hell out of it on the back, so that was nice to try something different and have it go a little bit better on the back.” Thomas said the longer driver gives him 2 or 3 mph in ball speed and 10 extra yards in the air. “It’s very specific for courses, but gave it a try,” he said. Conditions were easy enough that only four players in field failed to break par, with Jason Day bringing up the rear with a 75. One win separates the Knicks from a business trip to Las Vegas. The in-season tournament now known as the NBA Cup resumes Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks are set to host the Atlanta Hawks in a single-elimination “knockout round” game. A victory would send the Knicks to the tournament’s semifinal round in Sin City, where the NBA Cup final is also set to take place. The stakes are little higher for NBA Cup games, which — other than final — also count toward a team’s regular-season record. The team that wins the tournament gets a trophy, while its players each win $514,970. “It would mean a lot for us to get there and do all that,” Jalen Brunson said last week . “You have guys on the team who may be on one-year contracts or two-ways or whatever, and you get to go out there and try to win for them.” The NBA introduced the in-season tournament last year in an effort to elevate interest and competition during the regular season’s first half. The tournament splits the NBA’s 30 teams into six groups, and each team plays the others in its group once apiece during the opening round. The Knicks went 4-0 in group play – beating the Philadelphia 76ers, Nets, Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic – to win Eastern Conference Group A and advance to the knockout stage. The Hawks went 3-1 in group play to win Eastern Conference Group C. Wednesday’s win-and-advance affair functions as a rematch of the Knicks and Hawks’ first-round bout in the 2021 NBA playoffs, during which Trae Young emerged as a Madison Square Garden villain by leading Atlanta to a series victory. No one in the Knicks’ current core — including Brunson, Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns – were on that 2021 team. Atlanta (13-12) enters Wednesday as one of the NBA’s hottest teams, having won six in a row before Sunday’s 141-111 loss in Denver. The Hawks remain among the NBA’s highest-scoring teams at 117.1 points per game, despite a relatively down season for Young, who is averaging 20.9 points per game and shooting just 38.5% from the field. Helping to overcome Young’s uneven start — and the offseason departure of Dejounte Murray — have been career-best seasons by Jalen Johnson, who is averaging 19.8 points per game, and fellow forward De’Andre Hunter, who is averaging 19.3. Atlanta is, however, among the NBA’s worst defensive teams, which should mean plenty of scoring opportunities for the Knicks (15-9), who are a tick ahead of the Hawks offensively at 117.8 points per game. “NBA Cup, win or go home. It’s like a playoff game,” Towns said last week after the Knicks beat the Magic, 121-106, to advance to the knockout round. “We’re competitors. This is a high-level-competition moment. The game means a little more.” In last year’s inaugural tournament, the Knicks also advanced to the knockout round, only to be eliminated by the Milwaukee Bucks. The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Indiana Pacers in the 2023 final. A win Wednesday would make the Knicks one of the final four teams in the tournament. The NBA Cup semifinal games are scheduled to take place Saturday at Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. The final will also be held there next Tuesday. “I think it’s going to continue to grow, too,” Brunson said last week of the NBA Cup. “It’s still early, but I think as it picks up traction it’s going to be great for a long time. Obviously, if you’re able to be a part of it and move on, it’s a plus.”As New China Insurance prepares for its latest IPO, the company has set its sights on a bright future. Rumors have been swirling that a major expansion pack is in the works, promising to introduce new characters, quests, and challenges for players to explore. The possibility of a new game mode or feature being unveiled has also sparked excitement among fans who are eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the Miraculous Beast Paloo saga. The potential transfer of Neymar Jr. from Paris Saint-Germain to Barcelona was a saga that dominated headlines in the football world. However, amidst the rumors and speculations, the deal never materialized. Reports surfaced that Neymar's reluctance to return to Barcelona stemmed from his concerns about joining a club where his registration could not be guaranteed.Monaco will look to turn a corner again when they welcome a tricky Toulouse side to the Stade Louis II in Ligue 1 on Saturday. After appearing as though they had turned a corner, Monaco have slumped to two straight defeats once again, threatening their hopes of a top-three finish . © Imago Adi Hutter 's men showed great resolve to recover from back-to-back defeats last month, including being shocked at home by Angers, winning three straight games in all competitions. However, two more defeats have now followed, both of which came in gut-wrenching circumstances in hugely important encounters. Monaco were unable to extend their brilliant start in the Champions League, conceding two goals in the final five minutes against Benfica to lose 3-2 last midweek, before Mason Greenwood 's 89th-minute penalty condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at Marseille in their last outing. After losing just twice in 55 games when scoring the first goal prior to this run, to do so in two consecutive matches will be difficult to stomach for the Monaco squad, who now need to pick themselves up ahead of another crucial week. The league phase of the Champions League is reaching its crescendo with Monaco still in a good position inside the top eight, and they remain in the automatic qualifying places for that competition in Ligue 1, but any more slip ups this week will see that change. Sitting seven points behind Paris Saint-Germain suggests their title chances are all but gone, and Marseille overtook them on goal difference last weekend, but they remain three points clear of Lille, who are fourth. Home form of late suggests they can bounce back, considering that the Angers result remains their only defeat in 11 league games at the Stade Louis II, but they must improve their fortunes against Toulouse, who have won on their last two visits here. Those results have come from nowhere for Toulouse, who had only won two of their previous 16 at this venue, and form in general has improved dramatically in recent weeks for Carles Martinez 's side. © Imago The Spanish manager was under pressure early in the campaign, with Toulouse in the relegation zone, and even though they remain in the bottom half, they now find themselves just two points off the European places. Apart from losing to PSG, Toulouse have won the other four of their five previous games, the same number of victories they managed in the 15 matches prior. The most recent of those came last week against an Auxerre side that had taken 13 points from five games heading into the clash, but the Violets were well worth their success, coming out on top 2-0. It means they have now picked up twice as many points in their last five games (12) than they managed in their first eight games of the campaign (six), and defensive stability has been behind that, with all five wins this season being accompanied with a clean sheet. © Imago Monaco will need to assess the health of midfielder Lamine Camara ahead of this one, after he missed the defeat to Marseille with illness last weekend, while winger Krepin Diatta is a confirmed absentee with a muscle problem, and he is unlikely to return before the winter break. Folarin Balogun made his first start in almost two months last week, after recovering from a dislocated shoulder, and it will be between him and Breel Embolo over who will start in attack. Monaco go to Balogun's former club Arsenal next midweek, and it is unclear whether Hutter will rotate or prioritise one of the two upcoming games, but Aleksandr Golovin will hope to start again as he seeks to score in three straight Ligue 1 games for the first time. Toulouse's teenage goalkeeper Guillaume Restes was forced off in the final 20 minutes of their win over Auxerre last week, but despite the initial concern, it is expected he will be fit to start again here. The only injury worry concerns Dane Rasmus Nicolaisen , whose ankle injury will keep him sidelined for a few more weeks. There are unlikely to be any changes to the Toulouse side after their fine win last week, with Josh King among those in great form, having scored four goals in his last six appearances. Monaco possible starting lineup: Majecki; Vanderson, Kehrer, Singo, Caio Henrique; Zakaria, Magassa; Akliouche, Golovin, Ben Seghir; Balogun Toulouse possible starting lineup: Restes; Sidibe, Cresswell, McKenzie; Donnum, Casseres, Sierro, Suazo; Aboukhlal, King, Gboho It will be far from straightforward for Monaco to return to winning ways here against a Toulouse side that have dropped very few points in recent weeks. The hosts have lost just 1 of their last 11 home league games, but Toulouse should threaten that record if they can replicate some of their recent performances that have seen them win four of the last five. Amid a power crisis in Syria, India on Tuesday evacuated 75 Indian nationals from the conflict-torn country. The evacuation was conducted two days after the rebel forces ousted President Bashar Assad 's authoritarian government. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the operation was coordinated by the Indian embassies in Damascus and Beirut following an assessment of the security situation. "The Government of India today evacuated 75 Indian nationals from Syria, following recent developments in that country," it said in a late-night statement. READ | Inside Assad regime's notorious prison: 'Tortured bodies, near-skeletal prisoners' The MEA further added that all the evacuees safely crossed over to Lebanon and would return by available commercial flights to India. Who are the evacuees? "The evacuees included 44 'zaireen' from Jammu and Kashmir who were stranded at Saida Zainab. All Indian nationals have safely crossed over to Lebanon and will return by available commercial flights to India," the MEA statement said. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the government prioritises the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad. READ | European countries halt Syrian asylum applications after Assad's fall "Indian nationals remaining in Syria are advised to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus," the MEA advised. "The government will continue to closely monitor the situation," it added. The Syrian government on Sunday collapsed as rebel forces took control of Damascus following the strategic capture of several other prominent cities and towns. Soon after the capture, ousted President Bashar al-Assad fled the country and reportedly sought asylum in Russia after the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of Damascus. This marked the end of his family's 50-year rule. Assad's nearly 14-year tenure was marked by civil war, bloodshed, and a brutal crackdown on political opponents. On Monday, the MEA indicated that it is monitoring the developments in Syria and advocated for a peaceful and inclusive political process led by the Syrian people going forward. Immigration reforms will ease entry, exit – TinubuAustralia has defended the independence of the top international court after it issued arrest warrants for Israel's prime minister, former defence minister and a Hamas commander. or signup to continue reading The International Criminal Court (ICC) found there were reasonable grounds that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant bore criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes. This includes allegations of using starvation as a method of warfare and directing attacks against civilians in Gaza. The warrants are not a finding of guilt. that it didn't have jurisdiction over the matter. Australia respects the independence of the ICC and its "important role in upholding international law", Foreign Minister Penny Wong said. "We have been clear that all parties to the conflict must comply with international humanitarian law," she said in a statement on X. Senator Wong reiterated calls for civilians to be protected, hostages to be released, aid workers to be protected and for more humanitarian aid to flow. Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie said it was troubling that the court had targeted "an elected member of a democracy, of a sovereign nation-state, trying to protect his country from terrorists". The ICC ruled it had jurisdiction to investigate the situation in Palestinian territories and that states couldn't challenge the jurisdiction prior to a warrant being issued, "thus Israel's challenge is premature". Senior coalition figures have repudiated the court's argument it has jurisdiction, arguing Australia's position should be in line with the United States, which rejected the ruling. "They're supposed to be working with nation states and their legal systems, not seeking to supplant them," Senator McKenzie said of the ICC. "We would be looking to obviously stand with the United States on this issue." However, the US isn't an ICC member state - - and Washington previously welcomed a warrant issued against Russian President Vladimir Putin for atrocities in Ukraine. Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the said they would comply with the ruling. An arrest warrant was also issued for Hamas' military wing commander Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri for the crimes against humanity of murder, extermination, torture, and rape and other forms of sexual violence. There were reasonable grounds to believe he was also responsible for the war crimes of murder, cruel treatment, torture, taking hostages, outrages upon personal dignity, and rape and other forms of sexual violence, the court found. The decision by the independent court showed international humanitarian law needed to be upheld through fair and impartial judicial processes in all circumstances, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said. "Our collective mind and focus should be on the victims of international crimes in Israel and in the State of Palestine," . Arrest warrants for the leader of Hamas in Gaza and the former head of its political bureau were withdrawn following confirmation of their deaths. The official death toll in Gaza has eclipsed 44,000, according to the local health ministry, with tens of thousands more missing or believed to be buried under rubble. Israel's war in Gaza was sparked by listed terror group Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023 that killed 1200 people and resulted in 250 hostages being taken, according to Israel's tallies. Almost 100 hostages are still missing, with 35 believed to be dead. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team.
