Brian Cassella | Tribune News Service | Getty Images Ulta Beauty on Thursday beat Wall Street's fiscal third-quarter expectations, fending off fears of fiercer competition and slowing demand for makeup and skincare. The retailer hiked its full-year outlook slightly to reflect the better-than-expected results. For the fiscal year, it said it now expects net sales to range from $11.1 billion to $11.2 billion, compared with its previous guidance for $11 billion to $11.2 billion. It said it now expects full-year earnings per year to range from $23.20 to $23.75, up from $22.60 to $23.50. For the full year, the comparable sales forecast ranges from a decline of 1% to flat. The comparable sales metric tracks sales at Ulta stores open at least 14 months along with online sales, Despite the raised outlook, the company expects holiday-quarter comparable sales to decline by the low single digits. In a news release, CEO Dave Kimbell said he's "proud of the progress" the company's made and "encouraged by early signs that our efforts to reinforce our market position and drive improved performance are gaining traction." Here's what the beauty retailer reported for the three-month period ended Nov. 2 compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG: Earnings per share: $5.14 vs. $4.54 expected Revenue: $2.53 billion vs. $2.50 billion expected Ulta shares rose more than 10% in after-hours trading. Beauty has been a strong category for many retailers, holding up over the past couple of years even as inflation stretched families' budgets and many shoppers pulled back on discretionary purchases. The category's resilience caused companies, including Target , Walmart , Kohl's and Macy's , to expand their offerings of makeup and skincare. Yet Ulta began to hint at potential troubles in April, with Kimbell warning of cooling beauty demand at an investor conference. In recent quarters, Ulta's results have reflected discerning shoppers and heightened competition. The company missed earnings results and cut its full-year outlook in August after a drop in same-store sales. It marked the first time that the retailer missed Wall Street's expectations in about four years. Shares of the company have fallen, too. As of Thursday's close, Ulta's stock is down about 19% so far this year, trailing the S&P 500's approximately 28% gains during the same period. For the fiscal third quarter, the retailer reported net income of $242.2 million, or $5.14 per share, compared with $249.5 million, or $5.07 per share, during the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose from $2.49 billion in the year-ago period. Comparable sales increased 0.6% year over year, as the retailer saw a tiny uptick in traffic and average ticket. Customer transactions across its website and stores grew 0.5% year over year and average ticket, the amount spent by shoppers during those visits, rose 0.1% year over year. On the company's earnings call, Kimbell said the launch of new brands, rollout of digital tools and in-store events helped drive Ulta's better performance in the quarter. For example, he said, Ulta is selling an exclusive line of makeup tied to the release of Universal 's "Wicked" movie. It also added new features for online, including virtual try-on enhancements and new digital buying guides. And it had in-store events, including workshops where customers received coaching from Ulta's stylists on how to get "salon-worthy blowouts" For beauty retailers, including Ulta, the holidays are a critical time of year. Kimbell said the company is "encouraged by our performance through Cyber Monday." Still, he hinted of a still challenging backdrop. He said the company is ready for the shopping season, even as "our insights suggest that economic concerns are driving a greater focus on value." On the earnings call, CFO Paula Oyibo said the company continues to take a "cautious view of the consumer and operating environment" and factored that into its forecast. She said the compressed holiday season, which has five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, could also hurt sales. Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC. NBCUniversal is the distributor of "Wicked."

Congressional bicameral team pushes for insurance, pharmaceutical reformIndustrialist Elon Musk has seen his wealth surge over the past few weeks in tandem with the rising share price of Tesla, placing him further above on the wealthiest list. On Nov. 5, the day of the presidential election, Tesla stock closed at around $251. The company’s shares ended Dec. 11 at over $424, an increase of almost 69 percent. Musk’s net worth also rose more than 69 percent during this period. The Tesla CEO has a roughly 13 percent stake in the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer. Tesla’s $424 stock price is the highest ever for the company, beating the previous high set in November 2021. On Thursday, shares breached the $429 level before retreating to around $423 as of 12:05 p.m. EST. Tesla’s potential in terms of autonomous vehicles is $1 trillion, Wedbush said. “FSD (full self-driving), autonomous, and the launch of Cybercab for early 2026 are keys for Tesla.” “Furthermore, the weakening macroeconomic environment in global/China markets can also pose headwinds to volume sales.” An investigation into the matter by the National Transportation Safety Board found that the driver of the vehicle was potentially distracted for five seconds, which contributed to the crash. However, the agency pointed out that the system “did not provide an effective means of monitoring the driver’s level of engagement with the driving task.” While Tesla remains a key contributor to Musk’s enormous wealth, the entrepreneur has ownership in several major ventures. He is estimated to hold a 79 percent interest in social media platform X, and owns around 42 percent of shares in space tech enterprise SpaceX. Musk has stakes in artificial intelligence venture xAI, neurotechnology company Neuralink, and an infrastructure business, The Boring Company. DOGE is not a federal agency but an advisory board tasked with finding ways to slash excess regulations, cut down wasteful government expenditure, and restructure federal agencies. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most surprising teams in the NFL this season, as Mike Tomlin's squad is 8-3 and atop the AFC North through 12 weeks. After a 24-19 defeat to the Cleveland Browns in Week 12, Pittsburgh will look to get back in the win column in Week 13 versus the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. One of the primary reasons for the Steelers' success in 2024 has been the play of the offense. Though Arthur Smith's unit has struggled over the last two games, the group has found an identity centered around running back Najee Harris and the rushing attack. Harris is having another solid campaign in 2024, totaling 944 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. The former Alabama standout is the engine of Pittsburgh's offense and is setting himself up for a lucrative payday in free agency this offseason. The Steelers declined Harris' fifth-year option worth $6.79 million in May , setting the stage for the 26-year-old to hit unrestricted free agency in 2025. Though the Steelers could look to re-sign Harris, the 2021 No.24 overall pick will have a competitive market. A plethora of teams will be interested in Harris' services, but during an appearance on the Joe Starkey Show on 93.7 The Fan , The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Brian Batko stated that he believes the Las Vegas Raiders will be a team to look out for in the Najee Harris sweepstakes in the spring. "I think he (Harris), too, wouldn’t mind a fresh start,” Batko said. “The team that I mentioned in my chat the other day when someone asked about him was the Las Vegas Raiders. We all know Marshawn Lynch was his mentor, another Oakland guy. They still have the same agent and stuff like that. They’ll be in the position, I think, to draft a rookie and probably pay a running back. So I think that would be pretty cool if Najee ends up in Vegas next year, I just don’t see him back here." The Raiders would be an intriguing landing spot for Harris, as Las Vegas has one of the worst running back rooms in the NFL and desperately needs a dynamic playmaker at the position. The Raiders will likely select a quarterback in the draft, and providing their presumed young signal-caller with a potent rushing attack would be a logical move from the franchise. Harris isn't an elite player but is a physical, downhill runner who has never missed a game. The Steelers would love to have Harris back, but the team has an adequate replacement for the 2021 Pro Bowler in Jaylen Warren. Pittsburgh could also look to use a Day 2 or Day 3 pick on a running back, so they have a ton of options at their disposal to replace Harris if the two-time National Champion departs the Steel City in the offseason. CLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. “Am I a Brown yet?” he asked. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson's future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he's even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. It's also possible the Browns will cut ties with Watson. They signed Winston to a one-year contract to be Watson's backup. But the unexpected events of 2024 have changed plans and led to the possibility that the 30-year-old Winston could become Cleveland's full-time QB or a bridge to their next young one. So much is unclear. What's not is that Winston, who leaped into the end zone on fourth-and-2 for a TD to put the Browns ahead 18-6 in the fourth quarter, is a difference maker. With his larger-than-life personality and the joy he shows whether practicing or throwing three touchdown passes, he has lifted the Browns. A man of faith, he's made his teammates believe. Winston has done what Watson couldn't: made the Browns better. “A very, very authentic person,” Stefanski said Friday on a Zoom call. “He’s the same guy every single day. He's the same guy at 5 a.m. as he at 5 p.m. He brings great energy to everything he does, and I think his teammates appreciate that about him.” Winston, who is 2-2 as a starter with wins over the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, has a knack for inspiring through fiery, preacher-like pregame speeches. But what has impressed the Browns is his ability to stay calm in the storm. “He doesn’t get rattled,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks against the Steelers . “He’s just tuned in and focused as anyone I’ve seen at that position. Turn the page. There was a turnover, came back to the sideline, ‘Love you. I’m sorry. We’re going to get it back.’ He was already on to the next one, ‘How can we complete the mission?’ “I have a lot of respect for him. First was from afar and now seeing it on the field in front of me, it’s a blessing to have someone who plays a game with such a passion and want-to. You can’t ask for a better teammate when they take those things to heart and they want to play for you like we’re actually brothers and that’s what we have to attain. That brotherhood.” Winston has done something else Watson couldn't: move the offense. The Browns scored more than 20 points for just the second time this season, and like Joe Flacco a year ago, Winston has shown that Stefanski's system works with a quarterback patient enough to let plays develop and unafraid to take shots downfield. The conditions certainly were a factor, but the Browns were a miserable 1 of 10 on third down, a season-long trend. However, Cleveland converted all four fourth-down tries, including a fourth-and-3 pass from Winston to Jerry Jeudy with 2:36 left that helped set up Nick Chubb's go-ahead TD run. RT Jack Conklin. Garrett outplayed Steelers star T.J. Watt in their rivalry within the rivalry partly because Conklin did a nice job containing Pittsburgh's edge rusher, who was held without a sack and had one tackle for loss. Conklin has made a remarkable comeback since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last year. Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. Their desire to build a dome is well intended, but an indoor game could never come close to matching the surreal setting of Thursday night, when snow swirled throughout the stadium and covered nearly all the yard lines and hash marks. “It was beautiful,” Winston said. WR Cedric Tillman is in the concussion protocol. He had two catches before taking a big hit on the final play of the third quarter. 9 — Consecutive home wins for the Browns in Thursday night games. The Mustangs (10-1, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who checked in at No. 9 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, would like to send their seniors off the right way. They would also like to complete a perfect regular season before appearing in the ACC title game in their first year in the conference. Most importantly, they want to continue to strengthen their playoff case. "You've got the College Football Playoff, so every game matters. That's what's so cool about it now. The regular season is important," SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said. "We'd like to finish well in everything we do, particularly on Saturday, to finish off the regular season, continue our momentum into the following week. Hopefully, continue to show the committee and others that we're worthy of continuing to play this year." The Mustangs are a worthy playoff team to date. Kevin Jennings has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, throwing for 2,521 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has rushed for 315 yards and four TDs. Brashard Smith has been another standout, rushing for 1,089 yards and 13 TDs. Defensively, the Mustangs rank tied for 14th in the country with 20 takeaways. "Obviously they've had a phenomenal season," Cal coach Justin Wilcox said of SMU. "As soon as you turn the tape on, it doesn't take very long to see why their record is what it is. They're very, very good really in every phase of the game - extremely explosive and quick and fast. They've got a dominant D-line. We've got a lot of challenges in front of us and our guys are excited for that." Cal (6-5, 2-5) is coming off an emotional win, defeating rival Stanford 24-21 on Saturday to secure a bowl berth. The Golden Bears will appear in consecutive bowls for the first time since 2018-19 and are now looking to clinch their first winning season since 2019. SMU is not overlooking Cal, as all five of the Golden Bears' losses have come by one score. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a better 6-5 team in America," Lashlee said. "I think you can conservatively say they very, very easily could be 9-2." Cal is led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who has thrown for 3,004 yards with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. Tight end Jack Endries leads the team with 555 yards receiving, while wide receiver Nyziah Hunter has caught a team-leading five touchdowns. Defensively, Cal has the ACC's top scoring defense (20.7 points per game) and is tied with Clemson for the ACC's best turnover margin (plus-13). Defensive back Nohl Williams is the star of the group -- he leads the country with seven interceptions. Even though oddsmakers are heavily favoring SMU, Cal is going into the game with a simple mindset. "Our task at hand is to make the best bowl game right now," Mendoza said. "And the way to do that is to go into Dallas, give it our best and ruin SMU's season." Saturday will mark the first conference meeting between these ACC newcomers, and just the second meeting between the programs all time. SMU won a 13-6 game back in 1957. --Field Level Media

NoneWolves head coach Gary O’Neil insists he is happy to look fans in the face and take the criticism which comes his way after his team were jeered off after losing 4-0 to Everton at Goodison Park. It was the fourth time this season they had conceded four or more and the performance showed why they have the Premier League’s worst defence. When O’Neil and the players went over to acknowledge the visiting supporters there were boos for a run of two wins in 14 league matches. “Whatever the fans think of me, there is definitely no-none working harder than me and I will continue to do so until someone tells me not to,” said O’Neil, who is under increasing pressure with his side second bottom of the table. “I go over there to see them because I appreciate every one of the Wolves fans. They have given me unbelievable support since I arrived at the football club,” he said. “We managed to produce some unbelievable stuff last season with a team that was heavily tipped by most of the nation for relegation. We managed to enjoy it together. “Now it is tough. I was happy to go over there and look them right in the face and take any criticism they want to throw at me. “I accept responsibility for my part in that. Whatever criticism they want to throw at me will not change how I feel about them. “Everyone at this football club needs to do more. We will get back to be ready to fight again on Monday (another crucial game against West Ham, whose manager Julen Lopetegui’s tenure is hanging by a thread). “I will work with everything I have. I will back myself to get the most out of the group. I understand the drive for change (but) you never know how much of a percentage of supporters it is.” Veteran Ashley Young ended Everton’s 370-minute wait for a goal with a 10th-minute free-kick, his first league goal for more than two years, and on-loan Lyon midfielder Orel Mangala blasted home his first for the club to establish a 2-0 half-time lead. Two Craig Dawson own goals secured Everton’s biggest home league win since April 2019, but manager Sean Dyche insisted their issues up front were far from sorted. He said: “It’s our fifth clean sheet in the last eight so the consistency has been there in one degree, we just haven’t been scoring goals. That’s been the hardest thing to find consistently and we haven’t solved it yet. “Goals change everything, they change opinions. That’s what football is like.” The victory was hugely important in a month in which, having been hammered 4-0 at Manchester United, they face top-six sides Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest and undoubtedly eased some of the pressure on Dyche and his players. “I’ve told them how proud I am of them,” he added. “The challenges come thick and fast on and off the pitch and they just keep going. “It’s only a step and there are many more to go but it’s a good step and a positive step. “It’s a temporary moment in time because the next one is a big one (Saturday’s Merseyside derby).”From road closures, power outages, weather declarations and nonstop shoveling, Muskoka residents were faced with nearly a metre of persistent snowfall this weekend. According to Environment Canada, storm accumulations reached 140 centimetres of snow in Gravenhurst and 125 centimetres in Bracebridge. Near-whiteout conditions near Orillia Ont., on Sat., Nov. 30, 2024 (CTV News/David Sullivan) The heavy snowfall led to the closure of Highway 11 in both directions between Orillia and Huntsville on Saturday, with the closure persisting through to Monday morning. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said police expect the northbound lanes along Highway 11 to reopen around noon Monday from West Street in Orillia to Highway 60 in Huntsville. "There will be limited access. Not every exit and entrance will be open in that stretch," he explained. Except for Luigi Road, all ramps are cleared. Schmidt noted southbound lanes are expected to reopen sometime around 4 p.m. on Monday. Additionally, a dozen trucks were trapped on Country Road 6 in Cooper's Falls near Washago Monday morning. Emergency crews and motorists confirmed to CTV News that hundreds of vehicles were stranded without food or water, some for nearly 30 hours. On Saturday, fire crews helped bring motorists to Gravenhurst Town Hall via side-by-side transports for access to generators amid power outages.Lakeland Power and Elexicon Energy – the respective suppliers of electricity for Bracebridge and Gravenhurst – and Hydro One all indicated via their outage maps that tens of thousands of customers were without power on Saturday. The Town of Gravenhurst declared a state of emergency on Sunday after the District Municipality of Muskoka had declared a ‘Significant Weather Event’ on Saturday. Premier Doug Ford posted to social media Monday morning stating the province was working closely with authorities in Gravenhurst and across Muskoka to ensure they have everything they need. “Provincial resources are on hand and more are en route to help where needed. I’m relieved that there are no injuries or fatalities reported.” Ford encouraged residents to stay home until power is restored and roads and highways are safely reopened. Beaver Creek Institution isn’t immune to the power outage, having to switch over to its generator. “We are closely monitoring weather conditions and are prepared to make adjustments as needed to ensure secure access to essential services,” Correctional Service Canada noted in an email to CTV News. Meanwhile, drivers who are low on fuel are advised to find a safe place to park until they can safely access a gas station, or until fuel can be brought to them. OPP add that locals should only dial 911 for life-threatening situations and should contact the non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122 for all other situations.

The Toronto Raptors have a solid young core, with Scottie Barnes , RJ Barrett , and Immanuel Quickley all being 25 or younger. The Raptors also have a decent veteran group headlined by Bruce Brown , Kelly Olynyk , and Chris Boucher . With Toronto prioritizing player development this season, should the Raptors turn to their veteran group for guidance and mentorship or as a way to gain future assets? The Value of the Raptors Veteran Group Kelly Olynyk One of the Raptors’ first moves this offseason was resigning Olynyk to a two-year $26 million extension. However, 18 games into the season, Olynyk has yet to suit up with a back injury keeping him sidelined. At 6’11, Olynyk offers a valuable skillset off the bench, being able to space the floor at the five and help run an offense system with his playmaking. Two skills teams can never get enough of. Olynyk’s contract is also pretty tradeable, only making $12.8 million this season and $13.4 million next. The team has said the injury keeping Olynyk in street clothes isn’t severe, but after missing 18 straight games, it leaves questions about the severity of the injury. While Toronto could probably find a team at the deadline needing another big body and shooting, the value you’re getting back in a trade is probably less than what a healthy Olynyk can bring. With his shooting, Olynyk allows Toronto to experiment with lineups featuring multiple non-shooters on the wings. Toronto could also use him to help facilitate jumbo lineups that feature Barnes, Barrett, Jonathan Mogbo , and Ochai Agbaji as the secondary playmaking behind Barnes. Bruce Brown Like Olynyk, Brown has been sidelined all season, recovering from offseason knee surgery. However, Brown has been cleared for full contract and is in the process of ramping up to play. An additional guard will be a welcome sight for the Raptors, who have been without their starting PG Quickley for most of the season. While Davion Mitchell and Jamal Shead have done their best filling in for Quickley, they lack the scoring ability to pressure defenses yet. Brown has that ability with his slashing/cutting and activity on the offensive glass. Those traits, mixed with Brown’s defensive ability and playmaking, make him a valuable player on almost any team. However, again, like Olynyk, with Brown’s price tag and fresh-off surgery, any value the team can find for him on the market probably won’t equal what he can bring to the team. Even with that, unless Toronto is looking to keep Brown long-term, they should still look to move him. Mitchell and Shead are younger, will be cheaper, and better line up with the rest of the roster’s timeline. Keeping Brown around may bring immediate improvement, but the short-term gains don’t outweigh the potential long-term returns of developing Mitchell and Shead. Chris Boucher After failing out of Darko Rajakovic’s rotation last season , Boucher has been a staple of this year’s bench. Boucher leads Toronto’s bench in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and minutes per game. He has been crucial for the Raptors all season. While Boucher is producing reasonably well, he is also soon to be 32 and is in the final year of his contract. It doesn’t seem likely that Toronto will bring him back next season, considering his age and how many young players on the roster need minutes. Unlike Brown or Olynyk, who are either expensive or under contract longer, Boucher is on a cheap $10.8 million expiring deal. With his production/size and deal, Boucher could get a decent return in a trade. While losing the last member of the 2019 championship team would hurt, he will be gone soon anyway, so might as well get something in return. The Raptors bench will be worse without him, but in a year where the team wants to bottom out, that’s not bad. This type of winter system, called an Alberta Clipper, is typically characterized by a fast storm motion, drier air, and less moisture. Snowfall amounts are usually low and the snow type is dry and fluffy. We're expecting snow to arrive to northwest Missouri before sunrise on Saturday morning, moving into areas up near Marshall, Brunswick, and Moberly after 6:00 a.m., then progress southeast throughout the day, arriving in Columbia and Jefferson City by mid-morning and exiting to the southeast by late afternoon. If you have travel plans, shopping around town, or heading to the MU football game, roads will bet wet and visibility could be a challenge on the interstates, but winds will be fairly light and won't create whiteout conditions. Road temperatures will be lowest before 10:00 a.m., and will stay above freezing for much of the afternoon, so travel impacts are expected to be limited. However, bridges and overpasses may be slick into Sunday morning due to frigid morning low temperatures in the upper teens. Much of Mid-Missouri will see anywhere from a dusting to 1" of total snowfall, with isolated higher pockets around 1.5" possible where we see some very narrow snow banding set up. The track and timing of this system will likely shift a bit in the coming days, so make sure you have the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather app to get latest hour by hour timeline, forecast videos, and traffic alerts for your area over the weekend.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed his country will "invariably support" Russia's war in Ukraine as he met Russia's defense chief, the North's state media reported Saturday. Related video above: US confirms North Korean troops in Russia (10/24/24) A Russian military delegation led by Defense Minister Andrei Belousov arrived in North Korea on Friday, amid growing international concern about the two countries' expanding cooperation after North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia last month. The official Korean Central News Agency said that Kim and Belousov reached "a satisfactory consensus" on boosting strategic partnership and defending each country's sovereignty, security interests and international justice in the face of the rapidly changing international security environments in a Friday meeting. Kim said that North Korea "will invariably support the policy of the Russian Federation to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity from the imperialists' moves for hegemony," KCNA said. North Korea has supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine, calling it a defensive response to what both Moscow and Pyongyang call NATO's "reckless" eastward advance and U.S.-led moves to stamp out Russia's position as a powerful state. Kim slammed a U.S. decision earlier in November to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia with U.S.-supplied longer-range missiles as a direct intervention in the conflict. He called recent Russian strikes on Ukraine "a timely and effective measure" to demonstrate Russia's resolve, KCNA said. According to U.S., Ukrainian and South Korean assessments, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops to Russia, and some of them have already begun engaging in combat on the frontlines. The U.S., South Korea and others say North Korea has also shipped artillery systems, missiles and other conventional weapons to replenish Russia's exhausted weapons inventory. Both North Korea and Russia haven't formally confirmed the North Korean troops' movements and have steadfastly denied reports of weapons shipments. South Korea, the U.S. and their partners are concerned that Russia could give North Korea advanced weapons technology in return, including help to build more powerful nuclear missiles. Last week, South Korean national security adviser Shin Wonsik told a local SBS TV program that that Seoul assessed that Russia has provided air defense missile systems to North Korea. He said Russia also appeared to have given economic assistance to North Korea and various military technologies, including those needed for the North's efforts to build a reliable space-based surveillance system. Belousov also met North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol on Friday. During a dinner banquet later the same day, Belousov said the the two countries' strategic partnership was crucial to defend their sovereignty from aggression and the arbitrary actions of imperialists, KCNA said. In June, Kim and Putin signed a treaty requiring both countries to provide immediate military assistance if either is attacked. It's considered the two countries' biggest defense deal since the end of the Cold War.NEWARK, N.J. – Maryland men’s basketball evened its record against Big East foes. Nine days after losing to No. 15 Marquette, the Terps sleptwalked through the first half before mounting a furious comeback in the second and stunning Villanova, 76-75, on Sunday afternoon in the Saatva Empire Classic at the Prudential Center. Freshman center Derik Queen scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half — including the game-winning free throws — and grabbed 11 rebounds to ignite Maryland’s rally. Junior point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 10 of his 12 points in the same frame, senior power forward Julian Reese compiled 18 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore shooting guard Rodney Rice chipped in 16 points to help the team forget a 78-74 setback to the Golden Eagles on Nov. 15. The Terps (5-1) overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half exacerbated by an offense that connected on only 20% (2 of 10) of its 3-point shots in the first half and finished at 31.6% (6 of 19) for the game. Rice (3 of 8) was the only player to find the net from long distance more than once. Maryland turned the ball over 11 times in the same frame, which the Wildcats converted into 13 points. But in the second half, Maryland turned to Queen and Gillespie. The Baltimore native and five-star recruit scored eight straight points during a 3:03 stretch that included giving the team the lead, 57-55, for the first time since the score was 5-4 with 16:26 left in the first half. After Villanova recaptured the lead at 66-63, Gillespie stepped in. The Belmont transfer scored six consecutive points, including a 3-pointer that lifted the Terps into a 69-68 lead with 3:08 remaining. In the final 75 seconds, the game came down to Queen and Wildcats graduate student power forward Eric Dixon. Dixon, who reached the 20-point threshold for the sixth time in as many starts with 38 points on 15 of 29 shooting (including 5 of 11 from 3-point range) drained a 3 with 1:15 left to give Villanova a 73-72 lead. Queen responded with a layup at 0:58, while Dixon answered with a layup at 0:28. But Queen was fouled with 21.7 seconds remaining, and he nailed both free throws to give Maryland the 76-75 lead. In the final seconds, sophomore guard Tyler Perkins and Dixon missed 3-pointers, and the Terps escaped with the victory. The 6-foot-8, 265-pound Dixon made his presence known early. He scored the game’s first bucket and then eight straight points to key an 11-0 run that lifted the Wildcats to a 15-5 lead with 13:25 left in the first half. Rice’s 3-pointer at the 13:13 mark snapped a 3:13 drought for the Terps, who got three free throws from Rice 30 seconds later to draw within 15-11. But that would be the closest they got in the first half to Villanova, which continually went to Dixon for offense. Dixon’s offensive rebound and putback with 3:34 left in the opening frame gave him 20 points and was part of a 9-0 spurt by the Wildcats, who enjoyed their largest advantage of the half at 38-24. RENTON — The Seahawks waived cornerback/kick returner Dee Williams, clearing way to claim receiver/returner Jaelon Darden off waivers from Cleveland on Thursday. Darden has played in 31 NFL games with Tampa Bay and Cleveland since 2021 and has extensive return experience, with 78 punt returns for 760 yards in his career and 27 kickoff returns for 565. He is not listed as having any fumbles in 115 career combined kickoff and punt returns. Darden had 22 punt returns for 234 yards with a long of 28 for the Browns this season before being waived on Wednesday. Williams is the second returner waived by the team in four days in the wake of a mistake-filled game against the Jets Sunday. The Seahawks on Monday waived veteran receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. , who has since signed with the Chargers’ practice squad. Shenault and Williams lost fumbles in the game as the Jets took an early 21-7 lead before the Seahawks rallied for a 26-21 win. Williams also lost two fumbles on punts earlier in the season. Williams has been the Seahawks' only punt returner this year with 15 for 111 yards. Williams and Shenault were the team’s two primary kickoff returners, handling all but two of the 27 returns they've had this season — running back Kenny McIntosh handled the others. McIntosh, running back Zach Charbonnet and receiver Cody White have been practicing kickoff returns in the portions of practices open to the media this week. Darden likely takes over the punt returner role now, but the Seahawks also listed receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba as their backup at that spot. But assuming Darden arrives by Friday he will likely have enough time to be able to return punts when the Seahawks play at Arizona in a game pivotal to Seattle's hopes of winning the NFC West. Williams made the team as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee almost solely for his return ability, leading the Seahawks in punt and kickoff returns in the preseason. Williams has struggled with ball control at times during the season, muffing two punts earlier in the year for turnovers in the opener against Denver and a home loss to Buffalo, as well as the fumbled kickoff Sunday against the Jets. The Seahawks could be hoping to re-sign Williams to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed off waivers. Going on waivers means any other team has a 24-hour window to claim Williams. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Darden entered the league as a fourth-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2021 out of North Texas. He has nine receptions for 75 yards in his career. Darden has several times played against the Seahawks, including in a preseason game for Cleveland in August at Lumen Field when he caught two passes for 49 yards with along of 37. He also had two kickoff returns for 42 yards while playing with Tampa Bay in 2022 against Seattle in the Bucs' win over the Seahawks in Munich.

Matter Queer Space Manitoba — located in the previous basement home of Closet Space at 433 Graham Ave. — is a non-profit venture designed to offer LGBTTQ+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of colour) Winnipeggers a welcoming place to connect over art, books and shared interests. “A lot of (hanging out) happens in bars and not all queers are into that scene.” Matter was founded by spouses Bre and Nix Cristobal Calma and friend Carla Taylor, who runs Revolution Wellness Centre on the building’s main floor. “There aren’t a lot, if any, spaces in the community right now to just come and be together,” Bre says, adding the goal is to offer barrier-free programming to visitors of all ages. “Having a queer intergenerational space, that’s a really big thing because the queer community can be segmented in some ways,” Nix says. “A lot of (hanging out) happens in bars and not all queers are into that scene.” The basement is bright and cosy, with a gallery room at one end, library shelving in the middle and seating areas throughout. There are plans to add a gender-affirming retail shop in the future. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS Matter Queer Space Manitoba is a new art gallery, library and programming space for the local LGBTTQ+ and BIPOC community. In addition to art shows and workshops, the programming schedule is going to be community-driven, meaning anyone is invited to pitch and host public or private events that fit with Matter’s mandate. Ideas discussed so far include yoga classes, movie nights, craft groups and a reading club. “Not a book club, where you have to sit and talk; instead, you sit and collectively read together. You’re not necessarily forced into socialization that may be uncomfortable for some people, but it still gives you an opportunity to be out and around people that you know will accept you as you are,” Taylor explains. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS While Matter Queer Space Manitoba launches Saturday with an open house and maker’s market, the gallery space will open in January. It’s the kind of gathering that speaks to the project’s overall ethos. “We picture this space as a bit of an introvert haven,” Taylor says. Matter launches Saturday with an open house and mini maker’s market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring goods from 15 queer vendors, with sensory-friendly and mask-required shopping during the first two hours. The first art exhibit is set to open in January, featuring the work of local visual artist and muralist Cat Hues, a.k.a. Pink Panda. Matter’s founders believe it will be one of the city’s first permanent gallery spaces designated specifically for showing work by marginalized LGBTTQ+ artists. “It’s surprising it hasn’t been done yet because there are a lot of wonderful, racialized, trans, queer, non-binary artists,” says Nix, who is also a multimedia artist. “We picture this space as a bit of an introvert haven.” With every exhibit, the featured artist will be invited to host talks and art-making workshops for the public, the results of which will be turned into a group show curated by the artist. “We really want to challenge the idea of meritocracy. This idea that you have to have a degree in art curation to curate an exhibit,” Bre says. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS Matter’s library — which is the continuation of a project started by Taylor and friend Renu Shonek in 2019 — is stocked with borrowable books by bell hooks, Joshua Whitehead, James Baldwin and others. A book drive by Winnipeg’s Willow Press has brought dozens of new titles into the fold and Matter is accepting donations of used books of any genre by queer BIPOC authors. “We know these books are out there, but not everyone does. It’s nice to bring them together in a collection to learn about more authors and more talent in the community, and even to encourage some of our community members in their own writing and creativity,” Taylor says. To reduce financial barriers for visitors, the programming at Matter will be offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Other than donations collected through a GoFundMe campaign, the organizers have been footing the bill for the project out-of-pocket. They hope to find sustainable, long-term funding in the future. “This has definitely been a passion project and a labour of love. The three of us are just community members, none of us have experience doing any of this — running galleries or libraries — but it’s a space that we wanted to see and we knew there was a need for,” says Bre. “Nobody else was doing it, so someone had to.” Visit for more information. eva.wasney@winnipegfreepress.com Eva Wasney has been a reporter with the Arts & Life department since 2019. . "Completely Fine": Pak Minister On Man Pushed From ContainerMoney Research Collective’s editorial team solely created this content. Opinions are their own, but compensation and in-depth research determine where and how companies may appear. Many featured companies advertise with us. How we make money . By Kat Tretina MONEY RESEARCH COLLECTIVE December 5, 2024 China is a powerful force to be reckoned with. According to Safeguard Global, the country has the second largest economy based on its gross domestic product, which stands at $14.7 trillion in 2024. China’s role as an economic powerhouse is particularly evident through the lens of the global gold market, in which the nation plays a substantial role. China is the largest producer of gold in the world, and there is also significant demand within the country for gold jewelry and other products, which drives consumption. What’s driving China’s role in the gold market ? There are several factors, including cultural traditions, manufacturing needs and concerns about investments. China’s history with gold China has a long relationship with gold . Its use in the country dates back to the Han dynasty as early as 206 BC, and it’s since been used as currency, for making jewelry and even as part of worship. In 1978, when China re-entered the international economy and resumed trade with other countries, the gold market shifted. China transformed into an industrial powerhouse, and gold played a major role; along with jewelry, gold is frequently used in the creation of electronics, medical devices and in the automotive industry. In 1983, China allowed its citizens to own gold — private gold ownership was previously prohibited — and it created the Shanghai Gold Exchange, major milestones for the gold industry. Those changes began China’s transition to a gold superpower, as the government accumulated its gold reserves and gold mining within the country accelerated. China and gold: its impact today China is a huge presence in the gold market for both production and consumption: China is responsible for about 11% of global gold production, making it the largest producer of gold in the world. In fact, since it overtook South Africa for the lead in 2007, it has dominated the gold production market. According to Mining Technology, there are over 1,300 gold mines in the world, and China operates 117 of them. In 2023, China produced 370 tons of gold. To put that in perspective, that’s more than double the gold production of the U.S. The five largest mines in the country include: Gold is an important part of China’s economy, particularly in the manufacturing industry. China’s chief exports are electronics, machinery and vehicles — all segments that require gold. The Central Bank of China has been buying gold to bolster its reserves, moving its reserves away from traditional assets like U.S. Treasury debt. Its accumulation of gold has helped drive the price of gold . In China, gold was traditionally a common gift, particularly for brides, new parents and for the Lunar New Year, which helped drive its jewelry market. However, as the country has become richer and its citizens more wealthy, purchasing gold for personal use or investments is increasingly common as a status symbol. Right now, China is facing some issues with deflation , meaning prices across the economy have dropped. Combined with a volatile stock market and difficult real estate market, gold can be an appealing alternative for investors . Gold as an investment is particularly popular among young adults interested in alternative assets. Gone are the days when investors needed thousands of dollars or Chinese Yuan to purchase gold; today, Chinese investors can buy “gold beans” — as the name implies, small nuggets of gold — that cost less than $100 per bean. Gold beans have gone viral on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo, and mainstream jewelry stores have addressed the trend by selling gold beans in glass jars in their stores. In fact, Chinese consumers between the ages of 18 and 24 are more likely to purchase pure gold than any other age group, according to a report by the Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group. The increased demand for gold as an investment — and the availability of smaller, more accessible gold for investing — played a major role in China’s gold rush, with gold premiums reaching a then-all-time high in 2023. Outlook for China’s gold market Although the gold industry in China is still booming, there are some signs it’s cooling down. Record-high gold prices may have affected consumers, as gold jewelry sales dropped significantly in October 2024. China saw a slight decrease in gold production; for the first three quarters of 2024, its total production dropped by -1.17%. If gold prices remain high, that could continue the downward trend of jewelry sales, but it could increase the demand for gold for investments. How China’s gold market can affect you Because of China’s significant presence in the gold industry, many economists believe that gold prices and demand are affected not by the economy, but by Chinese investors themselves. With so many Chinese investors and consumers purchasing gold, it has markedly increased demand for the precious metal, which subsequently drives up prices. If you’re looking to invest in gold , China’s gold industry and its outlook is encouraging. However, it’s always important to diversify your portfolio so your investments aren’t concentrated in a single asset class. If you do invest in precious metals, investing in traditional securities — such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds or ETFs — can give you a well-rounded portfolio.

J.K. Dobbins and Alohi Gilman are placed on injured reserve by ChargersThe Yoon Suk Yeol administration has focused on maintaining fiscal soundness as a key economic policy. But its policy showed signs of change last week amid growing concerns about the toxic mix of sluggish domestic demand and a continued slowdown in economic growth. “In the first half of this year, the government has made efforts to revitalize the economy by helping the private sector lead the way,” President Yoon said at an event Friday. “In the second half, the government will strive to resolve social polarization to offer people a hope for the future.” Yoon also said that the government will open a “new era for the middle class” by injecting "fresh energy" into people’s livelihoods and the economy. Yoon’s comments, which directly mention a shift in economic policy, are now interpreted as a sign that the government may pivot to active fiscal spending and push for drawing up a supplementary budget. Some experts view Yoon’s hint at departing from fiscal soundness as inevitable considering the worsening economic conditions that are feared to undercut the growth prospect of Asia’s fourth-biggest economy. The construction sector, which is an important indicator of economic activity in Korea, has been mired in a protracted slump. Private spending is also sluggish, reflecting consumers' willingness to cut costs at a time when the economy continues to slow. Equally worrisome is the disheartening outlook that the country’s exports could stagnate toward the end of the year. Against this backdrop, both the state-run Korea Development Institute and the International Monetary Fund lowered their 2025 growth outlook for Korea to 2 percent. If external conditions like the risks linked to the new trade policy of US President-elect Donald Trump worsen at a faster pace, even a 2 percent expansion could be a rosy projection. Fueling speculation about the policy focus from fiscal soundness to stimulus spending is a comment from the presidential office. On Friday, a senior official at the presidential office said that the government is “not ruling out an active role for fiscal spending, including the possibility of a supplementary budget.” But the official said that the government had no plans to draw up an extra budget early next year Later in the same day, the presidential office told reporters that the government “had not discussed, reviewed or decided on any possibility of an extra budget,” adding that the official’s comment was “a general explanation that state finance should play a role, if necessary.” As a policy shift would be seen as significant, the Finance Ministry also issued a statement that it is not considering an extra budget proposal for next year. However, given that the Yoon administration has rejected the extra budget proposal from opposition parties, citing the importance of fiscal soundness, the comment on a supplementary budget from a senior official at the presidential office signals that a change in fiscal policy is one of the possibilities now being considered among high-ranking policymakers. Maintaining a tight budget is not necessarily an effective policy when multiple factors threaten the overall economy. Expansionary fiscal policy could help prevent the economy from falling into a deeper trap of slump. But critics said holding a discussion about extra budget was premature, if not outright misguided, since the National Assembly is currently reviewing next year’s state budget. Even the ruling People Power Party said that it was “inappropriate to explore possibilities about a supplementary budget at this point.” A bigger question is whether the government has enough room to shift its focus away from fiscal soundness. The government is already expected to see another significant shortfall in tax revenue this year due mainly to weak corporate earnings. As Yoon said, resolving social polarization is important, but policymakers must weigh all options and issues, including the need for a supplementary budget and ways to remove wasteful state spending programs.U.A.E. arrests 3 after missing rabbi found dead; Israel warns Jews there to be on alert

In recent years, the term "water tax" has gained traction as several provinces in China have been experimenting with transitioning from traditional water fees to a more nuanced system of water taxes. This move has significant implications for residents, as it not only affects their financial burden but also aims to promote water conservation goals. Despite being in place for over seven years in 10 pilot provinces, the impact of this transition on residents and the effectiveness of achieving water conservation targets are topics of ongoing debate. As we witness the end of an era with the absence of Messi and Ronaldo from the annual best XI, it is a reminder of the transient nature of greatness in football. While the two legends may no longer be dominating the headlines in the same way as before, their legacies will undoubtedly live on for generations to come.On December 11, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (“NYK”) and ENEOS Corporation (“ENEOS”) signed an Agreement regarding the sale and purchase of marine fuel with carbon dioxide removal credits (“CDR credits”) created through Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage (“DACCS”). The Agreement stipulates that ENEOS will procure CDR credits from 1PointFive’s STRATOS Direct Air Capture plant in Texas, the United States that is scheduled to commence operations in 2025. These credits are generated by removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it underground. ENEOS will then sell these credits, along with the marine fuel it supplies, to NYK for five years starting in 2028. DACCS is one of the negative emission technologies that achieves the removal of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that cannot be reduced by energy conservation or transition to next-generation fuels. This innovative technology contributes to achieving net zero emissions in the energy sector. NYK and ENEOS will continue to actively promote the development and dissemination of GHG emissions reduction technologies, including DACCS, to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society. 1PointFive’s STRATOS Direct Air Capture plant Based on the NYK Group Decarbonization Story published in November 2023, NYK is promoting CO2 emissions reduction toward achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This is being done by maximizing energy efficiency and transitioning from traditional fossil fuels to next-generation fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and methanol. Additionally, for residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through efforts to reduce emissions, NYK aims to achieve net zero CO2 emissions through a “reduction” and “removal” approach by offsetting emissions using CDR credits. Based on the Third Medium-Term Management Plan & Carbon Neutrality Plan announced in May 2023, the ENEOS Group is working not only on reducing and absorbing its own CO2 emissions through such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), forest absorption, and DACCS, but also on reducing society’s overall emissions through the promotion of energy transitions to such as hydrogen, biofuels, and renewable energy, with the aim of achieving net zero emissions at the Group and society at large. Moreover, through the launch of carbon offset fuel announced in January 2024, ENEOS will contribute to voluntary initiatives across society. 1PointFive is a Carbon Capture, Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) company that is working to help curb global temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2050 through the deployment of decarbonization solutions, including Carbon Engineering’s Direct Air Capture and AIR TO FUELSTM solutions alongside geologic sequestration hubs. Direct Air Capture can help marine companies advance their emissions removal goals during the transition period until low-carbon fuels become widespread and address residual emissions of alternative fuels. Arsenal's inconsistent form and lackluster performances this season have raised concerns among fans and pundits alike. While defensive frailties have been a major talking point, the Gunners' struggles in attack have also come under scrutiny. It is truly a headline many Calgary Flames fans thought they may never see. Left winger Jonathan Huberdeau has been tremendously disappointing ever since he was acquired from the Florida Panthers back in the summer of 2022. As the centrepiece of a trade package for young All-Star Matthew Tkachuk and a former 115 point scorer himself, Huberdeau had immense pressure to perform. Playing for a Canadian market and signing a franchise record 8-year, $84 million contract drove expectations up even further. In his first season in Cowtown, Huberdeau put up just 15 goals and 40 assists in 79 games to set an NHL record for the largest season-to-season point drop off ever recorded. Many pointed the finger at then-head-coach Darryl Sutter, whom Huberdeau and other veterans clashed with frequently. Some stated that the move across the continent and overall adjustment to life in the Great White North was the culprit. However, with a new head coach and more social stability in 2023-24, he scored only 12 times and had 52 points in 81 games, along with a career-worst minus-29 rating. Many fans and media personalities were quick to point out that Huberdeau’s 2023-24 was a tale of two seasons; in the first 41 games he scored six goals and 21 points but heated up to the tune of six goals and 31 points in the following 40 contests. Now 34 games into the 2024-25 season it seems as though “Huby” has built upon this pace as he currently leads the Flames with 13 goals and 25 points. His hot start is more than worthy of a closer look. A December to Remember Much of Huberdeau’s success has come due to an impressive recent stretch of play. From Nov. 30 until the time of writing (10 games), he has rippled the twine six times and added seven helpers for 13 points. After two-and-a-half seasons of trying, he has finally found chemistry with fellow 2022 acquisition Nazem Kadri , who has six goals and nine points in the same span. Huberdeau’s six-game point streak from Nov. 30 until Dec. 12 is tied for the best mark of his Flames tenure. Over the past summer, the French-Canadian forward stated that he had been working intensely on his shot, which has seemingly paid off in full. As a career playmaker, Huberdeau characteristically elects to distribute the puck rather than put it on net. He now has more confidence shooting and during this same hot streak has accumulated 23 shots on goal. His higher volume has contributed to more success; he is shooting at a career-best 21.7% clip. With his tally on Dec. 21 against the Chicago Blackhawks, Huberdeau registered his 13th goal of the season, already surpassing the 12 he had in all of 2023-24. The team has been iffy during the past 10 games, but still captured 11 out of a possible 20 points with a 4-3-3 record. Over this period, the team has scored 29 goals for a rate of 2.9 per contest, meaning Huberdeau has factored into approximately 45% of his team’s offence during his streak. For comparison, the only Flames to register more than five points during this time are Kadri, Connor Zary , and Matt Coronato. Any time Huberdeau is on the ice this season, the Flames control the puck; he has registered a 56% Corsi For rating, which means the Flames have more shot attempts than their opponents. There are even defensive improvements as the winger is on pace for a career-high 68 blocked shots. Is Huberdeau Officially Back? Now, is this type of Huberdeau one that Flames fans should get used to? Not yet. This is a very impressive stretch of hockey even beyond the past 10 games. In total over his past 74 appearances, Huberdeau has 19 goals and 56 points. He is currently on pace to finish the 2024-25 campaign with 31 goals and 60 points, which would both shatter his previous highest Flames totals. Huberdeau hasn’t reached the 30-goal plateau since the 2021-22 season, his last with the Panthers. It is something the pass-first forward has also only done twice in his career. However, the second half of this season should once and for all determine what Huberdeau can bring to the table moving forward. Fans should prepare for regression. It is important to note a few things in helping determine the sustainability of Huberdeau’s recent play. First of all, his aforementioned 21.7% shooting success rate is likely not something he can maintain for the next 48 games. He is also playing more than ever before as a Flame, with an 18:30 average time on ice. Should the team’s performance start to decline, head coach Ryan Huska will probably play the younger forwards more often, which would eat into Huberdeau’s ice time. In addition, his line mate Kadri’s name has come up in trade talks and his movement could disrupt Huberdeau’s performance. If Huberdeau can navigate through all of these challenges and the others every season brings and keep on producing, his identity as a Flame will become more concrete. All in all, Huberdeau has been showing glimpses of the player the Flames thought they were getting back in 2022. If he can sustain his recent play, he will offer more hope to the many fans that have always believed in him as an on-ice contributor. While 60 points a season may not be worth $10.5 million, it is certainly an improvement on the production thus far and a step in the right direction for both team and player. At the end of the day, the Flames are relatively competitive and Huberdeau is currently leading the team in scoring. Things are good in Cowtown for the moment. NoneA Fijian Member of Parliament , Lynda Tabuya , has been dismissed from her ministerial role after an explicit video of her surfaced online. The video, intended for her husband, was circulated on social media, prompting Ms. Tabuya to condemn the act as a criminal invasion of privacy. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced her dismissal as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection via Facebook, just two days after local media broke the story. "I have decided to exercise the power conferred upon me to dismiss her as a Minister, with immediate effect," he stated, adding that she would remain a Member of Parliament. Ms. Tabuya defended herself in local media, asserting, “there is nothing scandalous or illegal or immoral about sharing private videos and images between two consenting adults who are in a relationship, in this case me and my husband.” She criticised those who circulated the footage, calling it an example of online gender-based violence, a recurring issue in Fiji. The 52-year-old MP said that she was working with authorities to identify the perpetrators. She revealed evidence of one individual sharing the video via email and warned that anyone distributing the footage could face serious legal repercussions. “I warn anyone who is sharing the video through Messenger or email or any online platform that you are committing a crime and will be held accountable and face serious legal consequences,” she said. Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu confirmed that the Cyber Crime Unit is investigating after Ms. Tabuya filed a complaint in Suva. However, Prime Minister Rabuka noted that the government itself is not probing how the video was leaked. “The fact is that this video has been made available. Who by and what for will have to be determined by subsequent questioning on her part and on the part of the law enforcement agencies if she reports the matter to them,” he remarked. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of combating cybercrimes and protecting individuals' rights to privacy in Fiji.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers were hit by another family tragedy with the announcement that star left tackle Trent Williams' wife gave birth to a stillborn son late last week. Sondra Williams announced on Instagram on Sunday that she gave birth to Trenton O’Brien Williams Jr. on Nov. 24. Williams also wrote that she was initially pregnant with twins and lost the other child earlier in the pregnancy. “I can’t even begin to describe how I felt leaving the hospital without you,” she wrote. “Nor how it feels being home celebrating Thanksgiving without my baby in my arms. My heart is broken and my arms are empty. But I know you’ll always be near watching over me and your sisters. And for that, my heart smiles with gratitude. Thank God for allowing us to bond for 35 weeks and for me to birth you so I could hold you in my arms. I’m at peace knowing you will never have to suffer.” Williams wrote that her son was diagnosed with Trisomy 13, a genetic condition also known as Patau syndrome that affects how the face, brain and heart develop, along with several other internal organs. Trent Williams spent time last week at the hospital and grieving with his family, including the couple's three young daughters. “He was there at the hospital with her and got to meet him and say bye,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. "Then he had to cremate him on Friday. So he’s been dealing with that and he’s working through it. But we’re all just trying to be here for him through it all.” This is the second tragedy to hit the Niners in recent weeks. Cornerback Charvarius Ward's 1-year-old daughter , Amani Joy, died on Oct. 28. She had born prematurely with Down syndrome and had open-heart surgery in April 2023. Ward spent a few weeks away from the team and returned to the field for the first time on Sunday. Williams has missed the last two games with an ankle injury but Shanahan said he is hoping to be able to the return as soon as he's healthy. “It’s hard as a coach. It’s hard as a friend. It’s hard as a family member. It’s hard for everybody," Shanahan said. ”But we spend a lot of time with each other. That’s what’s cool about a football team. Whatever you go through, the good or the bad, we go through it together. I do like that they have a group of guys they can go to, a group of guys that can see them every day. You can never escape that full grief and stuff. But I do think it’s nice for those guys to have another avenue to get out on the football field, to get around teammates and things like that." WASHINGTON — American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide Tuesday because of a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive and winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne about an hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop for the airline. The order, which prevented planes from taking off, was issued at the airline's request. The airline said in an email that the problem was caused by trouble with vendor technology that maintains its flight operating system. An American Airlines employee wearing looks toward quiet check-in counters Tuesday in the American terminal at Miami International Airport in Miami. Dennis Tajer, a spokesperson for the Allied Pilots Association, a union representing American Airlines pilots, said the airline told pilots at 7 a.m. Eastern that there was an outage affecting the system known as FOS. It handles different types of airline operations, including dispatch, flight planning, passenger boarding, as well as an airplane's weight and balance data, he said. Some components of FOS have gone down in the past, but a systemwide outage is rare, Tajer said. Flights were delayed across American's major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company. Out of the 3,901 domestic and international American Airlines flights scheduled for Tuesday, 19 were canceled. Cirium noted that the vast majority of flights departed within two hours of their scheduled departure time. A similar percentage — 36% — arrived at their destinations as scheduled. Meanwhile, the flight-tracking site FlightAware reported that 3,712 flights entering or leaving the U.S., or serving domestic destinations, were delayed Tuesday, with 55 flights canceled. It did not show any flights from American Airlines. Cirium said Dallas-Fort Worth, New York's Kennedy Airport and Charlotte, North Carolina, saw the greatest number of delays. Washington, Chicago and Miami experienced considerably fewer delays. Travelers wait in line for security checks Tuesday at the Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles. Amid the travel problems, significant rain and snow were expected in the Pacific Northwest at least into Christmas Day. Showers and thunderstorms developed in the South. Freezing rain was reported in the Mid-Atlantic region near Baltimore and Washington, and snow fell in New York. Because the holiday travel period lasts weeks, airports and airlines typically have smaller peak days than they do during the rush around Thanksgiving, but the grind of one hectic day followed by another takes a toll on flight crews. Any hiccups — a winter storm or a computer outage — can snowball into massive disruptions. That is how Southwest Airlines stranded 2 million travelers in December 2022, and Delta Air Lines suffered a smaller but significant meltdown after a worldwide technology outage in July caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations even more disruptive than during slower periods. That is especially true for smaller budget airlines that have fewer flights and fewer options for rebooking passengers. Only the largest airlines, including American, Delta and United, have "interline agreements" that let them put stranded customers on another carrier's flights. An American Airlines employee wearing a Santa Claus hat walks through the American terminal Tuesday at Miami International Airport in Miami. This will be the first holiday season since a Transportation Department rule took effect that requires airlines to give customers an automatic cash refund for a canceled or significantly delayed flight. Most air travelers were already eligible for refunds, but they often had to request them. Passengers still can ask to get rebooked, which is often a better option than a refund during peak travel periods. Finding a last-minute flight on another airline tends to be expensive. An American spokesperson said Tuesday was not a peak travel day for the airline — with about 2,000 fewer flights than the busiest days — so the airline had somewhat of a buffer to manage the delays. The groundings happened as millions of travelers were expected to fly over the next 10 days. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 40 million passengers through Jan. 2. Airlines expect to have their busiest days on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. American Airlines employees check in travelers Tuesday in the American terminal at Miami International Airport in Miami. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations more disruptive than during slower periods. Even with just a brief outage, the cancellations have a cascading effect that can take days to clear up. About 90% of Americans traveling far from home over the holidays will be in cars, according to AAA. "Airline travel is just really high right now, but most people do drive to their destinations, and that is true for every holiday," AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said. Gasoline prices are similar to last year. The nationwide average Thursday was $3.04 a gallon, down from $3.13 a year ago, according to AAA. Charging an electric vehicle averages just under 35 cents per per kilowatt hour, but varies by state. Transportation-data firm INRIX says travel times on the nation's highways could be up to 30% longer than normal over the holidays, with Sunday expected to see the heaviest traffic. "It's not the destination, it's the journey," said American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph clearly was not among the travellers on one of more than 350 cancelled or 1,400 delayed flights after a worldwide tech outage caused by an update to Crowdstrike's "Falcon Sensor" software in July of 2023. U.S. airlines carried nearly 863 million travellers in 2023, with Canadian carriers accounting for another 150 million, many of whom experienced lost luggage, flight delays, cancellations, or were bumped off their flights. It's unclear how many of them were compensated for these inconveniences. Suffice it to say, posting a crabby rant on social media might temporarily soothe anger, but it won't put wasted money back in pockets. Money.ca shares what to know in order to be compensated for the three most common air travel headaches. Bags elected to go on a vacay without you? Check off the following: If you expect a large payout, think again. Tariffs (air carrier contracts) limit the compensation amounts for "loss of, damage to, or the delay in delivery of baggage or other personal property." In the case of Air Canada, the maximum payout is $1,500 per passenger in the currency of the country where the baggage was processed. To raise that limit, purchase a Declaration of Higher Value for each leg of the trip. The charge is $0.50 for each $100, in which case the payout limit is $2,500. For Delta Air Lines, passengers are entitled to up to $3,800 in baggage compensation, though how much you'll receive depends on your flight. Delta will pay up to $2,080 for delayed, lost, and damaged baggage for international travellers, almost half of what U.S. domestic passengers can claim. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. Different air carriers and jurisdictions have their own compensation policies when flights are delayed or cancelled. For example, under European Union rules, passengers may receive up to 600 Euros, even when travelling on a non-EU carrier. Similarly, the DOT states that travellers are entitled to a refund "if the airline cancelled a flight, regardless of the reason, and the consumer chooses not to travel." However, US rules regarding delays are complicated. Some air carriers, such as Air Canada, do not guarantee their flight schedules. They're also not liable for cancellations or changes due to "force majeure" such as weather conditions or labour disruptions. If the delay is overnight, only out-of-town passengers will be offered hotel accommodation. Nevertheless, many airlines do offer some compensation for the inconvenience. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. In terms of cash compensation, what you'll get can differ significantly based on things like departure location, time, carrier, and ticket class. The DOT offers a helpful delay and cancellations dashboard designed to keep travellers informed about their compensation rights. The dashboard is particularly helpful because, as the DOT states on its website, "whether you are entitled to a refund depends on a lot of factors—such as the length of the delay, the length of the flight, and your particular circumstances." The Canadian Transportation Agency is proposing air passenger protection regulations that guarantee financial compensation to travellers experiencing flight delays and cancellations, with the level of compensation varying depending on the situation and how much control the air carrier had. The proposed regulations include the following: The airline is obligated to complete the passenger's itinerary. If the new ticket is for a lower class of service, the air carrier would have to refund the cost difference; if the booking is in a higher class of service, passengers cannot be charged extra. If the passenger declines the ticket, the airline must give a full refund, in addition to the prescribed compensation. For overnight delays, the air carrier needs to provide hotel accommodation and transportation free-of-charge. Again, if you are unsatisfied, the Canadian Transportation Agency or Department of Transportation may advocate on your behalf. Passengers get bumped because airlines overbook. When this happens, the air carrier must compensate you. For international flights in the US, the rate is 200% of your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $675 maximum. If the airline does not make travel arrangements for you, the payout is 400% of your one-way fare to a maximum of $1,350. To qualify, you must check-in by the stated deadline, which on international flights can be up to 3 hours ahead. Keep in mind that if you accept the cash, you are no longer entitled to any further compensation, nor are you guaranteed to be rebooked on a direct flight or similar type of seat. Don't be too quick to give up your boarding pass. Negotiate for the best compensation deal that would include cash, food and hotel vouchers, flight upgrade, lounge passes, as well as mileage points. But avoid being too greedy—if the gate attendant is requesting volunteers and you wait too long, you'll miss the offer. According to Air Canada's tariff, if a passenger is involuntarily bumped, they'll receive $200, in cash or bank draft, for up to a two-hour delay; $400 for a 2-6 hours delay; and $800 if the delay is over six hours. (Air Canada was forced to raise its payouts in 2013 due to passenger complaints.) The new rules would raise the payout significantly: $900 for up to six hours; $1,800 for 6-9; and $2,400 for more than nine hours, all to be paid within 48 hours. Statistically speaking, Delta Airlines is the carrier most likely to bump. A few years ago, Delta raised its payout maximum to $9,950, while United Airlines tops out at $10,000. Seasonal jobs are reportedly shifting from retail stores to eCommerce fulfillment centers as businesses respond to consumers’ changing holiday shopping habits. While the number of seasonal jobs at retailers dropped from 564,000 last year to 520,000 this year, Amazon added 250,000 seasonal positions and UPS added 125,000, CNBC reported Tuesday (Dec. 24). The roles at Amazon and UPS are generally focused on fulfillment and delivery of online orders, according to the report . This shift in employment came as consumers continued doing more of their holiday shopping online. This year, three-quarters of American shoppers plan to buy at least half their gifts online, the report said, citing data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas . Consumers are expected to continue this trend, with the retail sector forecast to shrink by 0.2% each year over the next decade, per the report. Some 450,000 jobs are expected to be created by online shopping in the U.S. by 2026, according to the report . The latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed eCommerce sales in November rebounding from a tepid pace in October as consumers filled up their online carts for gift-giving, PYMNTS reported Dec. 17. While overall retail sales surged 0.7% in November — ahead of a consensus forecast of 0.6% — the non-store retailer category, which includes eCommerce sales, was 1.8% higher. During this year’s Black Friday, 72% of shoppers made at least some purchases online , while only 28% of consumers shopped exclusively in stores, according to the PYMNTS Intelligence publication, “ Black Friday 2024 Report: Sales, Not Sentiment, Drives Black Friday Turnout .” The report found that in-store shopping remains significant but supplements online shopping. Fifty-six percent of consumers visited physical stores during Black Friday — a figure that was down from 57% in 2023 and 62% in 2022. In terms of seasonal jobs , Target said in September that it planned to hire roughly 100,000 workers for the holiday shopping season — a number that was in line with last year’s hiring levels. These openings are for the retailer’s stores and supply chain facilities, Target said, noting the need for workers to support order pickup, drive-up and product stocking needs .Neal Maupay: Whenever I’m having a bad day I check Everton score and smile

Colorado would not disclose the amount of insurance coverage each received, citing privacy laws. Coach Deion Sanders and athletic director Rick George both said it was the largest in college football history. “We happen to have two players that are probably going to be the first two picks of the NFL draft,” Sanders said Monday. “We all know who those two are and they have received, I think, the highest number of coverage that has ever been covered in college football. It far exceeds anyone that has ever played this game of college football.” While college programs maintain insurance policies for their athletes in case of injury, Colorado increased disability coverage for its entire roster in the Alamo Bowl. Sanders, the coach of the No. 20 Buffaloes, ensured his QB son and two-way star Hunter received larger policies since both are expected to be among the top 10 selections in the upcoming NFL draft. “It was his idea we should get disability insurance for our athletes for this game to ensure that they played and if there was some kind of injury that they would be well taken care of," George said. “So, we worked together on that. We’re excited about it. We think it’s great that all our players are playing in the game. That’s what all bowl games should be like.” Colorado (9-3, No. 23 CFP) will face the 17th-ranked BYU Cougars (10-2, No. 17 CFP) in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday. While most teams are scrambling with starters opting out of bowl games this year to enter the transfer portal or NFL draft, the Buffaloes did not lose any player on their two-deep roster. “It’s more than what I got (when he played at Kansas State),” Colorado linebackers coach Andre’ Hart said. “They gave us a helmet and said pop this on your leg and get out there and play. For them to get that (increased insurance coverage), I just think it’s beneficial. To talk about where the game is, where it’s going and how leadership is taking care of the players, I thought that’s excellent.” Shedeur Sanders completed 337 of 454 passes for 3,926 yards and 35 touchdowns this season. Many scouting services have Sanders rated as the top quarterback in this year's draft. Hunter received the Heisman Trophy as a two-way standout at cornerback and wide receiver. He had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns and as a cornerback had four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and limited the opposition to 22 receptions on 688 defensive snaps. “They’ve taken care of us, everybody,” Colorado running back Micah Welch said. “It really means a lot to have every teammate up here. That's a big thing. What I like about Coach Prime, they’re taking care of us.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Viola Davis said that probably her proudest achievement was the creation of her game-changing character Annalise Keating in legal drama thriller “How to Get Away With Murder,” during an onstage interview Thursday at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where many in the ecstatic audience had greeted her by declaring, “I love you, Viola.” She also spoke of the bravery that was required to stand up to the orthodoxy that held sway in network TV when the show launched 10 years ago. Variety publishes, below, an edited excerpt from the interview, which was as refreshing in its honesty as the actor’s performances. “As a character [as originally envisaged], she made absolutely no sense,” she said, eliciting laughter and applause in the audience. “I mean, you have to be honest with it: a lot of characters on television, they just don’t make sense. They’re a Mr. Potato Head of an audience’s desires. They want them to walk like supermodels and they want them to look beautiful in the costumes and in the courtroom scenes, whether they’re wearing Alexander McQueen or Armani. They talk really fast in Shondaland, you know, faster than what people actually speak. You don’t really see people as talking and listening, and, I mean ... I don’t want to sound like I’m ragging. “And then you go into the sexuality thing, and maybe there is a plethora of women out there who have 15 sexual partners in a day, but what is missing from all of it is: the why. “And so, I was given the character ... her name was Annalise DeWitt when I first started, and I was like, DeWitt? So, I did change that. I changed it to Annalise Keating. I mean, she could have been DeWitt, but it’s just so grand. “But the reason why I think I’m proud of it is because I felt it was brave of me. I haven’t always been brave in my life, but that was one moment that I was brave. I had a decision to make: I could just join the crop of women who work on TV who, to be honest, they have a certain look in the lead roles. “And, here’s the thing: When you become a celebrity, you get all kinds of messages from people. It’s like Mark Twain said: You need two types of friends ... The friends who talk about you, and the friends who tell you about people who talk about you. So, you get a lot of friends who tell you about people who talk about you. “So, there’s so many people who said, ‘Oh, she’s miscast. Annalise Keating is described as mysterious and sexual and all that, and that can’t be Viola.’ “Sanford Meisner, a great acting teacher, he said: One of the most important questions an actor can ask is: ‘Why?’ And when you ask ‘Why?’ it brings you on a journey that could be transformative. “And so, here’s what I had to do: I had to at least try to lose weight and try to be that woman who could be on television, which is not going to happen. I was about 50 years old at the time. It’s not like I was going to do Botox and start eating string beans. “So, then I had to ask some questions: Why do I have to be that woman? Why does she have to walk great in heels? Why can’t I be the size I am? And why can’t all those things be true and I be on network TV? Why can’t I take my wig off? Why can’t I wear my natural hair? “And every time I asked, ‘Why?’ I got to the truth of who Annalise was, and so then I had something to work with, which is trying the best I could with network TV writing to make her some semblance of a human being, and so that was the first thing with Annalise Keating. “I remember the phone call with Peter Nowalk, who is the showrunner-creator of ‘How to Get Away With Murder,’ and Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, and the head of the studio [ABC Entertainment Group], Paul Lee. We were all on the telephone, and I remember saying, I can’t believe I was saying this, because I wanted the job, y’all, I didn’t want to lose this job, but I heard myself say it ... I said: ‘Well, I’m not going to do this show unless she could take off her wig. And the reason is, if I take off the wig, and if I take off the makeup, they’re going to have to deal with that woman who’s been revealed. They’re going to have to deal with her crinkly, curly hair. They’re going to have to deal with the woman behind the mask. And that is a character that I could play. “And then you have to deal with why a woman would be that sexual. You can’t just do it, because here’s the thing, with sexuality and human beings, it’s not pornography. Pornography is selling the sex, right? It’s to turn people on. It’s serving a purpose. Being sexual is an extension of who you are as a human being. It’s based in memory, experience, trauma, everything. You don’t just do it. “And then when you are having sex, in my imagination, in my fantasy, every sex scene should be cringy. I mean, who has a camera in their bedroom, where it’s perfectly shot, and everyone has been in the gym for the last five months, no one puts down a towel. But I decided to deal with the woman who would be bisexual, have affairs, be married to a man who could be a murderer, and so that’s when her sexual past and her sexual abuse came up. That’s when Miss Cicely Tyson [who played Ophelia Harkness, Annalise’s mother] came into the picture. And then I felt like I was building a world that was honest; it was a world that was fantastical, but there were some threads of the truth in there, that made people lean in, and that is what I’m most proud of.” Later, when asked what her legacy would be, she added: “My legacy is to help people feel less alone. I do think that there’s something sacred when the lights go down and you’re in the audience and you have your popcorn and your Sour Patch Kids and your Diet Coke. That’s what I eat, y’all. And there’s something sacred in that relationship and that agreement. And the agreement is that I am not going to escape as an artist. I’m going to show you you. You, with all the piss and the poop, and all those private moments that you don’t want to show people, all the parts of you that you probably feel that if you share with people, it would be the most shameful part of your life. I want you to be brave enough to witness that and acknowledge that, and I want to be brave enough to give it to you. “And if I can do that, that would be a legacy. Not just the awards and the accolades, but the bravery of how well I can craft that and give it to you.”None

Addressing a programme following the inauguration of the Constitution Museum at OP Jindal Global University in Sonipat, he remarked that India is among the leading countries of the world today due to its Constitution. He said the Constitution Museum will inspire future generations. “We will celebrate Constitution Day on 26th November, with programmes being organised in all colleges, universities, and educational institutions. Birla said Prime Minister Narendra Modi started this programme in 2015 to make the people of the country aware of their Constitution. “We should remember our heritage and contribution and be proud of our country’s Constitution and its makers. Our democracy is the strongest in the whole world,” he remarked. Advertisement “Today, people around the world are adopting the values of our Constitution, which is the strength of our democracy. We gave the message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ to the whole world, and today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are moving forward with this message,” he said. Remembering the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on the occasion, he said, “Today, we are moving forward with Gandhiji’s ideas, and we are proud that the ideas of the Father of the Nation are being adopted across the world.” The Lok Sabha Speaker said that when the Constitution of the country was drafted, there was a need for equality, and it was within the basic structure of the Constitution that the foundation of equality was laid. He emphasised that the Constitution is not merely a legal framework but a document of social change. “Today, we are happy that we are taking forward the role of ‘Antyodaya’, thanks to our Constitution,” Birla said, thanking the Chancellor of the university and MP Naveen Jindal for building the Constitution Museum. In his address, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said, “Our Constitution is a matter of pride and glory for us as it gave us the message of freedom, unity, and socialism. We are the Mother of Democracy.” He also congratulated the university for building the Constitution Museum. MP Naveen Jindal said, “Our country is moving forward with democratic values due to its Constitution. With this museum, the university has tried to present all the aspects — from the creation of the Constitution to its implementation and development in the country in front of future generations.” Birla said that a seminar on the Constitution is also being organised at the university campus for four days. Deputy Commissioner Dr Manoj Kumar, DCP East Prabina P, Vice Chancellor of the University C Raj Kumar, and many other dignitaries were present on the occasion. Advertisement

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Luke Kromenhoek threw for 209 yards and tossed three touchdown passes as Florida State halted a six-game losing streak and routed Charleston Southern 41-7 on Saturday. Kromenhoek completed 13 of 20 passes in his first college start, including a 71-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Khi Douglas, as the Seminoles (2-9) won for the first time since Sept. 21. The true freshman also connected with Amaree Williams for a 4-yard TD and Hykeem Williams for a 10-yard TD. Florida State had the nation’s lowest scoring offense at 13.3 points. The Seminoles hadn’t scored more than 21 points or surpassed the 300-yard mark in 2024. But Florida State overwhelmed FCS Charleston Southern (1-11), accumulating 415 offensive yards. Kaleb Jackson completed 22 of 32 passes for 218 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown pass to Landon Sauers, and an interception for the Buccaneers. The takeaway Charleston Southern: While the Buccaneers found some success through the air, they couldn’t sustain drives and managed just 57 rushing yards on 29 carries. Florida State: The Seminoles picked up a season-best 176 rushing yards, scoring 17 points in the second quarter and 14 points in the third quarter to take control. Up next Charleston Southern’s season is over. Florida State plays host to Florida on Nov. 30. Traditionally, gangster films have often employed non-linear storytelling techniques, utilizing flashbacks, multiple perspectives, and fragmented timelines to weave a complex narrative web. While this approach has proven effective in creating suspense and intrigue, it can also lead to confusion and detachment from the characters and their motivations. By opting for a linear narrative in the new "Four Seas Brothers" installment, director Lin Cheng aims to streamline the storytelling process, allowing audiences to engage more deeply with the characters and their journey through the criminal underworld.

NoneKentucky will aim to improve upon its best start in seven seasons when it hosts Western Kentucky on Tuesday night in Lexington, Ky., in the final game of the BBN Invitational. The Wildcats (5-0) are ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press poll and are setting impressive offensive milestones even for a program as tradition-rich as Kentucky, which includes eight national championships. The Wildcats have scored 97 or more points in their first four home games for the first time in program history and eclipsed the 100-point mark in three of those games. Their lone trip out of state was a solid 77-72 victory over Duke in a matchup of top-10 teams in Atlanta. Kentucky has also made at least 10 three-pointers in each of its first five games of a season for the first time ever. "I think Kentucky attracts good people," Kentucky coach Mark Pope said after the Wildcats' 108-59 win over Jackson State on Friday. "It's the one place in all college basketball where you represent just a fanbase in a different, unique way." Otega Oweh and Koby Brea have led the Wildcats' early scoring outburst. Oweh, who is averaging 16.2 points per game, had 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting against Jackson State. "He gets us off to unbelievable starts every night," Pope told reporters after that game. "He's probably been our most consistent guy in games." Brea, who scored 22 points against Jackson State and is averaging 16.0 points per game, is leading the nation in 3-point accuracy at 74.1 percent. As a team, the Wildcats are shooting 42.3 percent from beyond the arc. And the few times they miss, Amari Williams has been doing the dirty work on the glass, averaging 10.8 boards in addition to 9.6 points per game. Kentucky faces a different challenge than it's had to contend with so far in the Hilltoppers (3-2), who have won three in a row after losing their first two games to Wichita State and Grand Canyon. Their up-tempo play hasn't exactly resulted in great offensive output, but in the Hilltoppers' 79-62 win over Jackson State on Wednesday, they shot 45.2 percent from 3-point range (14 for 31). "I was happy to see a lot of different guys contribute tonight and, hopefully, get their feet under them a little bit and get some confidence," said Western Kentucky coach Hank Plona, who is in his first season as head coach. "Obviously, Tuesday will be quite a test and challenge for us and we'll need them to be at their absolute best." Western Kentucky has an experienced group, which returned mostly intact from last season. The team is led by Conference USA first-team selection Don McHenry, who is leading the team with 17.2 points and 2.2 steals per game. McHenry is one of four Hilltoppers with scoring averages in double figures. Julius Thedford (11.4 points per game) and Babacar Faye (15.0) are each shooting 40 percent or better from 3-point range. Western Kentucky also figures to challenge the Wildcats on the boards as it enters the game ranked in the top 25 in defensive rebounding (30.4 per game). Faye leads the Hilltoppers in that department, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game and figures to battle Williams inside. "We're not the biggest team in the world, but our depth and our quickness are our strengths," Plona said. --Field Level Media

Silly Nice Cannabis Products: The Perfect Stocking Stuffer for New Yorkers This Holiday SeasonKILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin said she suffered an abrasion on her left hip and that something “stabbed” her when she crashed during her second run of a World Cup giant slalom race Saturday, doing a flip and sliding into the protective fencing. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd before going to a clinic for evaluation. “Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just can’t move,” she said later in a video posted on social media . “I have a pretty good abrasion and something stabbed me. ... I’m so sorry to scare everybody. It looks like all scans so far are clear.” She plans to skip the slalom race Sunday, writing on Instagram she will be “cheering from the sideline.” The 29-year-old was leading after the first run of the GS and charging for her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington’s steep finish pitch, when she an outside edge. She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop. Reigning Olympic GS champion Sara Hector of Sweden won in a combined time of 1 minute, 53.08 seconds. Zrinka Ljutic of Croatia was second and Swiss racer Camille Rast took third. The Americans saw Paula Moltzan and Nina O’Brien finish fifth and sixth. “It’s just so sad, of course, to see Mikaela crash like that and skiing so well,” Hector said on the broadcast after her win. “It breaks my heart and everybody else here.” The crash was a surprise for everyone. Shiffrin rarely DNFs — ski racing parlance for “did not finish.” In 274 World Cup starts, she DNF'd only 18 times. The last time she DNF'd in GS was January 2018. Shiffrin also has not suffered any devastating injuries. In her 14-year career, she has rehabbed only two on-hill injuries: a torn medial collateral ligament and bone bruising in her right knee in December 2015 and a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee after a downhill crash in January 2024. Neither knee injury required surgery, and both times, Shiffrin was back to racing within two months. Saturday was shaping up to be a banner day for Shiffrin, who skied flawlessly in the first run and held a 0.32-second lead as she chased after her 100th World Cup win. Shiffrin, who grew up in both New Hampshire and Colorado and sharpened her skills at nearby Burke Mountain Academy, has long been a fan favorite. Shiffrin is driven not so much by wins but by arcing the perfect run. She has shattered so many records along the way. She passed Lindsey Vonn’s women’s mark of 82 World Cup victories on Jan. 24, 2023, during a giant slalom in Kronplatz, Italy. That March, Shiffrin broke Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark’s Alpine mark for most World Cup wins when she captured her 87th career race. To date, she has earned five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals — along with a silver — and seven world championships. In other FIS Alpine World Cup news, the Tremblant World Cup — two women’s giant slaloms at Quebec’s Mont-Tremblant scheduled for next weekend — were canceled. Killington got 21 inches of snow on Thanksgiving Day, but Tremblant — five hours north of Killington — had to cancel its races because of a lack of snow. Trump's lawyers rebuff DA's idea for upholding his hush money convictionOTTAWA - Closing the First Nations infrastructure gap could generate $635-billion in economic output over the next seven years, a new report commissioned by the Assembly of First Nations says. The AFN and Indigenous Services Canada estimate there is a $349-billion infrastructure gap plaguing First Nations communities that they’re calling to be closed by 2030. The gap is the result of decades of underfunding and failed fiduciary duties affecting housing, roads, internet connectivity, water treatment plants, ports and schools that the AFN and Indigenous Services Canada say will become more costly to remedy without immediate investments. The report by the Conference Board of Canada released today says every dollar spent to close that gap will contribute $1.82 in economic output to Canada. AFN national chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak says the report shows that closing the infrastructure gap is not just about righting wrongs, but about bringing forward a transformative economic opportunity for all Canadians. The report says the economic benefits of closing the gap go far beyond its immediate predictions, and that broader economic impacts will be studied later. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024.It is common to see contrails, cloud-like strips of condensed water left behind by aircrafts at high altitude. Some dissipate within minutes, but depending on the weather or time of day, some can remain for hours or develop into wispy cirrus clouds. Because of that, there is uncertainty about how exactly contrails affect the environment, and scientists are studying how they may be trapping heat in the atmosphere. To do that, researchers at NASA Langley have partnered with GE Aerospace to further examine the effects of contrails. Using LIDAR technology, or light detection and ranging, researchers used a power laser attached to the bottom of a research plane to capture cross-sections of a contrail left by a GE aircraft. That allowed them see what structures are left behind that may not be visible from the ground. The LIDAR creates a two-dimensional curtain to measure water vapor, so researchers can see where the atmosphere is more saturated. With those images, scientists can see how thick contrails are and what conditions create the most disruptive versions. “We like to think of these contrails as just two circles of ice, and it’s a lot more complicated than that,” said Rich Moore, research scientist and principal investigator of the program. “For the first time, we’re able to sort of peel back that veil and see some of the underlying complexity.” Contrails are very bright white, and in many cases they can reflect sunlight, which typically cools the atmosphere, said Cassi Miller, senior engineer for GE’s Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE) program. However, when contrails form or stick around for nightfall, she said they can cause issues. Because there’s no more sunlight to reflect, they begin trapping heat. What kind of surface is below contrails, such as sea or land, can affect them as well, but Miller said the experiments with NASA and GE will help create more definitive data. “A lot of people look up in the sky and some days you see contrails, some days you do not. It’s kind of hit or miss with weather, but most people don’t think about their climate impact,” Miller said. “As an industry and in collaboration with atmospheric scientists, there is a general consensus growing that they have a warming impact on the climate. There’s a lot of uncertainty around that. “People are familiar with (carbon dioxide) emissions, right? How does the impact of a contrail compare? Is it the same scale? Is it a different magnitude? That’s part of what we’re trying to figure out in this campaign.” With the experiment, Moore said data can be used to map where conditions for contrails can be the strongest and create paths where aircrafts can avoid them. Tests also will be used for research into more sustainable aircraft engines. “We’re very interested and concerned about fuel burn and aviation’s (carbon dioxide) emissions, which we know impact climate. In addition to that, we’re also starting to become much more concerned about contrails,” Moore said. “The reason for that is that the global modelers today tell us that the climate impact from contrails and aviation-induced cirrus clouds is about the same warming impact as the past century’s worth of aviation — since the beginning of the jet age. “And so, of course, (carbon dioxide) is with us for 100 years or so after we admit it, so we’re very interested in improving fuel efficiency and continuing to make airlines and airframes and engines more efficient,” she added. “But we also need to be concerned about, at some point, reducing contrails.”
