World number one Luke Humphries retained his Players Championship Finals title with an 11-7 victory over teenager Luke Littler in Minehead. Littler, who won the Grand Slam of Darts last week, hit checkouts of 170, 164 and 136 as he threatened to overturn an early deficit, but Humphries held his nerve to win the last three legs. “I’m really, really proud of that one to be honest,” Humphries told Sky Sports. He really drives me, makes me want to be a better player and I enjoy playing him. “He let me in really early in that first session to go 4-1 up, I never looked back and I’m proud that I didn’t take my foot off the gas. These big games are what I live for. “Luke is a special talent and he was right – I said to him I’ve got to get these (titles) early before he wins them all. “I’d love to be up here and hitting 105 averages like Luke is all the time but he’s a different calibre, he’s probably the best player in the world right now but there’s something about me that never gives up. “This is a great way to go into the worlds.” HUMPHRIES GOES BACK-TO-BACK! 🏆 Luke Humphries retains his Players Championship Finals title! I just can’t wait to go home, chill out, obviously practice at home for the worlds. That’s it now, leading up to the big one.”Taurus Daily Horoscope Today, December 07, 2024 predicts recognition at the office soon
Special teams miscues prove costly for Bears in overtime loss to VikingsDespite a wild win Sunday for the Dallas Cowboys, America’s Team remains America’s Mess. The Cowboys ended a five-game losing streak — the team’s longest losing streak since 2015 — with a 34-26 win over the Washington Commanders that featured a cacophony of special teams miscues from both squads. Still, Dallas is 4-7 and faces an uphill battle to avoid its first losing season since 2020. Things can’t get much worse for the Cowboys. Quarterback Dak Prescott signed a record-setting contract just as the season began, then suffered a season-ending injury eight games in. Head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract is up after the season and absolutely nobody expects him to be back in 2025. While McCarthy is the lamest of lame ducks, there’s been more chatter about who will replace him than there’s been about how the team can win now. Peter Casey-Imagn Images There’s even been rumblings in the media that Dallas is no longer America’s Team — that the Cowboys are no longer relevant. As Homer Simpson would say, D’oh! (More about Homer in a few.) Sure, these aren’t Roger Staubach’s Cowboys or Troy Aikman’s Cowboys. And for the remainder of this season, they’re Cooper Rush’s Cowboys. We’ve already heard the snarky comments about a Thanksgiving matchup that pits Rush against the Giants’ Tommy DeVito. Talk about a Turkey Bowl. Well guess what? We’ll still be watching. The Cowboys have already played four prime-time games this season, and after hosting the second game on Thanksgiving Day, they’ve got two more night games — hosting the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night in Week 14 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night in Week 16. On paper, that Bengals-Cowboys Monday night game is a bit of a clunker. Both teams head into Week 13 with 4-7 records, so there certainly won’t be any playoff drama. Did someone say, “Flex?” No, actually nobody did. For starters, the Bengals-Cowboys game is set to feature an alternate viewing presentation called “The Simpsons Funday Football.” The real-time animation broadcast will stream on Disney+ and ESPN+ with players transformed into characters from “The Simpsons.”For the record, Bart will be siding with the Bengals while Homer sides with the Cowboys. Which feels right. Fitting: The NFL Can't Flex Bengals/Cowboys Out Of Monday Night Football Because There's Been 'Too Much Work' Done On The Simpsons Alt-Cast https://t.co/XV5LWW6K2n pic.twitter.com/x5Xb9S88nu The collaboration between the NFL, ESPN, Disney, Sony’s Beyond Sports technology and, of course, the creative crew behind “The Simpsons” has already done plenty of pre-production on the broadcast. So even though this game would seem an ideal candidate to be flexed out of Monday night, that’s not going to happen. Looking at the Week 14 schedule, there wouldn’t have been too many obvious choices to get bumped into the Monday night window. Maybe the best possibility would have been the first-place Atlanta Falcons at the 9-2 Minnesota Vikings — the Kirk Cousins Bowl. Bills at Rams could have been appealing as well. Again, not gonna happen. And while it’s easy to blame Homer and Bart for this, the bottom line is that the Cowboys are still the Cowboys. An NFL Broadcasting exec told me it is “highly unlikely” the league would flex out of a Dallas Monday night game even if The Simpsons execution wasn’t taking place. He pointed out that when Dallas lost on Monday night last week — by 24 points at home to the Houston Texans — the game still attracted 17 million viewers. Even if the Cowboys didn’t hang on Sunday to get a win, they would have been the lead story for most Monday sports shows. Even with the win, there are no great expectations. But the Cowboys are still the Cowboys. And we’ll still be watching. Luke Humphries defeats Luke Littler to retain Players Championship Finals titleIn the heat of the 2024 election, news influencers seemed to be everywhere. Both Republicans and Democrats credentialed content creators to cover their conventions – and encouraged influencers to share their political messages. Influencers also interviewed the candidates and held fundraisers for them. But up until now, it has been difficult to get a sense of the size and characteristics of this new wave of news providers. A unique Pew Research Center study provides a deeper understanding of both the makeup of the news influencer universe and its audience. The project includes an in-depth examination of a sample of 500 popular news influencers and the content they produce, derived from a review of more than 28,000 social media accounts. We also conducted a nationally representative survey of Americans to better understand who regularly gets news from news influencers. While many news influencers are on multiple sites, there is also a different mix of influencers on each site. A closer look at five major social media sites, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube, finds that news influencers on TikTok – a fast-growing destination for news in the U.S. – stand out from those on other sites in the following ways: News influencers largely offer independent voices from outside the news media. About three-quarters of news influencers (77%) have no past or present affiliation with a news media organization, while 23% have been employed in the news industry in some way. Those in the latter category include influencers who are currently affiliated with any news outlet (digital, TV, print, etc.), those who formerly worked in the news industry before becoming an independent influencer, and freelancers who have regularly contributed to news organizations. To get a sense of what news influencers are posting about, researchers collected all public posts by the 500 news influencers in our sample for three separate weeks in 2024: July 15-21, July 29-Aug. 4 and Aug. 19-25. We then analyzed these posts using a human-validated large language model. News influencers post about a wide range of topics. In fact, most of the posts by the news influencers in our sample during the three weeks (57%) could not be directly tied to current events or civic issues. (This may in part be a result of examining each post out of context, and not including images in the analysis.) Some of the key findings from looking at the 43% of the posts that were confirmed to be about current events or civic issues:From the moment Donald J. Trump came down the Trump Tower escalator in 2015, he’s been anything but a conventional politician. He’s consistently told Americans the unvarnished truth about everything from anti-worker “free trade” deals to our broken immigration system, from endless wars abroad to our two-tiered justice system. Instead of caring about “conventional wisdom” or political orthodoxy, he’s been committed to doing what’s best for the American people. And that’s exactly why everyday Americans, fed up with our country’s rudderless leadership, resoundingly re-elected President Trump. Democrats and the media are naturally apoplectic about President Trump extending his unique way of running our country to his Cabinet and other agency nominations. Just as they said about President Trump himself, his personnel picks have been attacked for lacking “traditional” experience or having “unconventional” views. What these criticisms miss is that it was precisely because of those unconventional views and his unique resumé that Americans voted overwhelmingly to re-elect him. They voted for a president and an administration focused on cutting through the noise and ignoring arbitrary credentials to deliver real results. If that’s surprising to you, do a little reflection on what the last four years of “the adults” running things has entailed. So many of Joe Biden’s nominees and staffers appeared very qualified on paper in the traditional sense of how Washington has operated — and most of these people have been, at best, incompetent or, at worst, outright destructive to our country’s stability and prosperity. Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken boasted a long resumé of jobs at the highest levels of our country’s security and foreign policy apparatus, from the State Department to the National Security Council. On Blinken’s “very qualified” watch, the Biden administration transformed the unprecedented era of world peace inherited from the first Trump administration into global chaos and conflict, from the Middle East to Ukraine to Asia. Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas similarly held numerous positions as director of the Citizenship and Immigration Services and deputy DHS secretary, along with a successful private legal practice. That highly conventional pick to run DHS went on to oversee tens of millions of illegal immigrants pouring into our country, including suspected terrorists , sex offenders and violent gangsters. What about wunderkind Pete Buttigieg? That sleek Rhodes Scholar who worked at McKinsey, one of the world’s most prestigious consulting firms? After being given $7.5 billion to build hundreds of electric-vehicle charging stations across the country, he managed to build less than 10 in two years. We could go on, but it’s clear that the American people are fed up with what looks and sounds “right” on paper; they want what works in reality, and they voted for the outside perspectives needed to take the wheel and stop driving the country — and world — off a cliff. President Trump’s nominees, however maligned, are set to do just that. Tulsi Gabbard, for instance, is a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserve who has vocally and articulately broken down how our national-security establishment has gotten us into endless wars while compromising the security of Americans. She was even egregiously put on a terror watchlist by a politically weaponized government for voicing these opinions. Who could be better to serve as our director of national intelligence to focus on making our country safer? Kash Patel, similarly, has been laser-focused on the politicization of law-enforcement agencies against Americans like President Trump himself, who faced one Russia hoax-fueled investigation after another, while actual, violent criminals continue to freely roam our streets. For Americans concerned about Making America Safe Again, that sounds like an excellent — even if “unconventional” — background to reform the FBI. Despite our material abundance, Americans have some of the highest rates of chronic disease in the world. Instead of tapping one of the medical “experts” — however conventionally qualified — who’ve overseen that disaster, President Trump chose a champion of preventative medicine, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to bring in new perspectives to Make America Healthy Again. This team of visionaries and leaders President Trump has assembled will deliver on the mandate to Make America Great Again. Democrats and the media can spend the next four years stonewalling and hyperventilating, as they did during the first Trump administration, or work with the president and be a part of our country’s resurgence. Nearly 80 million Americans made it clear last month which option they’d prefer. LOS ANGELES — Londynn Jones scored 15 points, making all five of her 3-pointers, and fifth-ranked UCLA stunned No. 1 South Carolina 77-62 on Sunday, ending the Gamecocks’ overall 43-game winning streak and their run of 33 consecutive road victories. The Gamecocks (5-1) lost for the first time since April 2023, when Caitlin Clark and Iowa beat them in the NCAA Tournament national semifinals. With South Carolina’s loss, No. 2 UConn could move to No. 1 in this week’s rankings when they are announced Monday. The Huskies will face Oregon State Monday night in the opener of the Baha Mar Women’s Championship in the Bahamas. Te-Hina Paopao scored 18 points and Tessa Johnson scored 14 for the Gamecocks, whose road winning streak was third-longest in Division I history. It was the first time UCLA took down a No. 1 team in school history, having been 0-20 in such games. The program’s previous best wins were over a couple of No. 2s — Oregon in 2019 and Stanford in 2008. Elina Aarnisalo added 13 points as one of five Bruins in double figures. UCLA (5-0) dominated from start to finish, with the Bruins’ suffocating defense preventing the Gamecocks from making any sustained scoring runs. South Carolina: The Gamecocks trailed by double-digits at halftime for the first time since Dec. 21, 2021, against Stanford, according to ESPN. Chloe Kitts, who averages a team-leading 14 points, finished the game with 2 points on 1 of 7 shooting. UCLA: The Bruins led 43-22 at halftime. Eight different players scored and contributed to 11-0 and 7-0 runs in the first and second quarters as they shot 52% from the field. The first quarter set the tone for a game in which the Gamecocks never led. They missed their first nine shots and were 4 of 18 from the floor in the quarter. UCLA ran off 11 straight points to take a 20-10 lead into the second quarter. The Bruins dominated the boards, 41-34, and held the Gamecocks well under their scoring average of 80.2 points. South Carolina travels to Florida to meet Iowa State in the Fort Myers Tipoff on Thanksgiving. UCLA travels to the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Hawaii to play UT Martin on Friday.

The dollar fell and Bitcoin’s rally stalled as traders viewed Donald Trump’s pick of Scott Bessent for Treasury Secretary as a measured choice, tempering some of the more fevered bets spurred by the president-elect’s victory. The greenback declined against major peers with the Aussie and euro leading gains, while Bitcoin fell below $97,000 before paring losses. Equity futures in Australia and Japan point to early gains Monday after US stocks rose 0.4% on Friday. Contracts in Hong Kong were steady. The early moves indicate elements of the so-called Trump Trade are cooling after the incoming president named Bessent, who runs macro hedge fund Key Square Group, to oversee the US government debt market, tax collection and economic sanctions. While Bessent indicated he’ll back Trump’s tariff and tax cut plans, investors expect he will prioritize economic and market stability over scoring political points. “Following his other nominations, and the drawn-out battle among the contenders for the Treasury job, you could literally hear the sigh of relief from financial markets participants in the US when Bessent was announced,” Erik Nielsen, chief economics advisor at UniCredit Bank GmbH wrote in a note to clients. Bessent’s nomination may ease some concerns over Trump’s impact on other countries’ economies and currencies around the world. The dollar has now climbed for eight straight weeks, the longest advance in more than a year, as traders continued to price Trump’s fiscal policies including sweeping trade tariffs and persistent economic growth. The euro fell to a two-year low and the Swiss franc slid to the weakest against the greenback since July as speculative investors turned the most bullish on the dollar since late June. US stocks rose on Friday, with the S&P 500 gaining 0.4% as beneficiaries of the incoming administration’s looser regulation and business-friendly stance climbed. The Treasury curve flattened, with yields on 2-year notes climbing after strong US business activity data. Benchmark 10-year yields edged lower. Australia’s equivalent fell seven basis points in early Monday trading. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine helped to push West Texas Intermediate crude above $71 a barrel while gold traded at over $2,700 an ounce, and had its best week since March 2023. This week, traders in Asia will be closely monitoring Japan’s inflation data after Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda last week indicated the December policy meeting is live. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is expected to cut its key rate on Wednesday. Elsewhere, a swath of inflation and growth readings in Europe are due. The Federal Reserve’s November meeting minutes, consumer confidence and personal consumption expenditure data, the central bank’s preferred gauge of inflation, will be closely parsed to help assess the outlook for rate cuts next year. “Equity bulls will want to see a healthy bounce in the consumer data, married with a below consensus read on PCE inflation,” said Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone Group in Melbourne. “With US swaps now implying a 36% chance of a 25 basis point cut from the Fed on 18 Dec, weaker US data would see pricing for a 25 basis point cut rise back above 50%, which should support equity risk and be a headwind for the US dollar.” Some of the main moves in markets: Currencies Cryptocurrencies Bonds Stocks This story was produced with the assistance of Bloomberg Automation. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes continues to build great chemistry with his tight end — just not the one you might think. Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Noah Gray for the second straight week as the Kansas City Chiefs held off the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. A week after losing at Buffalo, the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (10-1) maintained their position atop the AFC. Mahomes completed a 35-yard touchdown strike to Gray on the game’s opening possession and found him again for an 11-yard TD in the second quarter. Gray has four touchdown catches in the last two weeks — twice as many as nine-time Pro Bowler Travis Kelce has all season — and has become a weapon in the passing game for the Chiefs, who lost top wide receiver Rashee Rice to a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. Kelce was still a factor Sunday with a team-high six catches for 62 yards, although the four-time All-Pro looked dejected after dropping one easy pass. Kelce has 62 receptions for 507 yards this season, while Gray has 26 catches for 249 yards. But Gray’s development is a good sign for the Chiefs — and he’s on the same page with Mahomes. On his second TD, Gray said Mahomes “gave me the answer to the test there” before the play. “He told me what coverage it was pre-snap,” said Gray, who had four receptions for 66 yards. “That’s just the blessing you have of playing with a quarterback like that. Offensive line did a great job blocking that up and the receivers did a great job running their routes to pop me open. Really just a group effort right there on that touchdown.” Gray said that’s nothing new. “Pat’s preparation, his leadership is just something that I’m fortunate enough to play alongside,” Gray said. “I love it. It gets me motivated every time we go out there for a long drive. Having a leader like that, that prepares every single week in-and out, knows defenses, knows the game plans. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “I’m just fortunate enough to play alongside a guy like that.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three TDs, and he knew what to do on the second TD to Gray. “It’s not just me, it’s the quarterback coaches and the players, we go through certain checks you get to versus certain coverages,” Mahomes said. “I was able to see by the way they lined up they were getting into their cover-zero look. I alerted the guys to make sure they saw what I saw and I gave the check at the line of scrimmage.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement Advertisement
