Over the years, different fashion trends, films and television have influenced the must-have toys of the year - and looking back, they do capture part of what it was like growing up in a certain decade. They were the kind of gifts you couldn't imagine your own children playing with now, or that your parents had to queue up for at 6am to ensure you would get your hands on it. Before there were apps, Xbox consoles or iPhones, most had plush toys, milk caps and interactive pets at the top of their Christmas wish-list. In the 1990s, we saw the arrival of the Teenage Mutant Ninja (Hero) Turtles, the 8-bit Game Boy and, of course, Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear, reported . Here are a number of the must-have Christmas toys of that decade that . Many kids will remember singing the theme tune - "heroes in a half shell" - as they rushed home after school to watch the cartoon and play with their turtle toys. The show followed Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo, brothers trained in ninjutsu who fight evil in New York City. The show's popularity probably sparked a spike in national pizza sales too as it was all the characters ate. The very first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures were heavily based on the original comic series, which had a much darker tone than the later cartoon. And figures amassed 30m sales worldwide. Still popular today, a film reboot is anticipated for 2023. Despite its tiny screen and dull green background, the Nintendo Game Boy was an absolute revelation when it launched three decades ago. For games fans of a certain age, the 8-bit Game Boy is a symbol of their childhood and many will remember the Game Link cable which allowed two Game Boys to be connected together for multiplayer fun. As well as the Tetris theme music from way too many hours spent playing it as a kid. Following the sale of 300,000 upon initial release in Japan, several other versions of the Game Boy consoles were created. The Play It Loud series introduced a range of case colours, with the white version exclusively released in Japan - and it remains the rarest of all the Game Boy Play It Loud models. In the late 90s, many will remember the Pokemon series becoming a staple of the Game Boy. In the Thunderbirds television series, it was the secret headquarters of the International Rescue organisation - but as a toy it meant so much more. In 1992, parents queued for hours in the hope of landing one of these. Thunderbirds had just made a TV comeback and it was in high demand. BBC1's Blue Peter famously ran a make-your-own segment for those unlucky enough not to bag a real one. It used items including a grocery box, newspapers and drinking straws to construct a replica. The island has since had more releases as a children's toy in the 2000s. But 1992 was also the year for WWF action figures from toy giants Hasbro. Based on the famous wrestlers of the WWF including Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, and Big Bossman, the series came under criticism for the characters cartoon-esque appearance. However, the figures proved very popular, becoming one of the must-have toys of Christmas 1992, and are now very collectable. In March 1959, a doll named "Barbie" launched onto the American toy market - and the rest is history. Over the decades, we've seen different themes and variations of the popular toy doll and in the early 90s, it was one of the must-have Christmas toys in the country. In 1993, they beat all of the competition and perhaps it had something to do with the release of the Barbie Dream Motor Home that year. The Talkboy was another popular one for 1993. They came into existence due to a letter-writing campaign by young fans after seeing the fictional product used by Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. In the classic Christmas film, Culkin's character Kevin McCallister uses the toy to make a reservation at the Plaza Hotel and outsmart his enemies. The toy - which could slow your voice down, play it back or speed it up - became one of the ‘must-have’ products that Christmas, when it was promoted alongside the VHS release of the film. Back in the 1990s, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers superhero television series hit our screens, which saw kids re-enacting scenes in the playground and arguing over which colour they would be in the group. Spandex suits weren't just invented for stag dos - this American series featured teenagers who would morph into superheroes to battle bizarre baddies. In comparison to some other must have toys at the time, the figures weren't too pricey, but demand was high, making them one of the must have Christmas toys in the UK in 1994. These 'milk caps' became ultra collectable and playgrounds were full of kids swapping them. The idea was you flipped the POGS but most people didn't really bother with the playing - it was all about which ones you had. The game began getting sold commercially under the name POGS in the 1990s, with the name originating from a brand of juice whose caps were used to play the game. POGS amassed 350m sales worldwide. (Image: Mirrorpix) The release of the original Toy Story sent this toy soaring to the top of the 'I-want-one-of-those-mum' chart. Toy Story was released in March 1996 in the UK and was an instant hit with kids and grown-ups. And later that year, the toy was the most sought after product for Christmas, with kids keen to get their hands on futuristic space man Buzz Lightyear. The doll sold out so rapidly before Christmas, with such high demand, that emergency stock was shipped to the UK, arriving at selected UK stores in time for December 24, 1996. BBC reports suggested that stores sold out of the Buzz Lightyear doll within 20 minutes of opening on Christmas Eve 1996. The Tickle Me Elmo wasn't that far behind either, with worldwide sales up to one million. The children's plush toy of the Sesame Street character was also a must have and created a lot of hype at the time. (Image: Vincent Cole) Two toys shared the No1 spot in 1997. Teletubbies became a huge hit with the younger generation, who were desperate to get their hands on a plush doll of characters Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po. For parents of a certain age, Christmas 1997 will bring back nightmarish memories of traipsing from shop to shop trying to secure a must-have Teletubby toy for their little ones. The toys, from the hugely popular tots’ TV show, were at the top of the nation’s Christmas wish-list that year, but supplies were limited in certain areas and stores were selling out as soon as the dolls came into stock. But it was older children and teenagers who were obsessed with the virtual Tamagotchi pets from Japan. If you still own an original Tamagotchi they can be worth a lot of money today. The Tamagotchi also made somewhat of a comeback in 2017 after Bandai, the company behind the original, released a special edition of the iconic digital pet to mark its 20th anniversary. The new device is smaller than the original, but retains the familiar egg shape, pixelated LCD screen - and constant need for attention. The interactive pet pipped Yo Yo's to the crown in 1998. The gifts became a huge hit despite only launching in the October and stores around the country were inundated with parents looking to snap one up. The Furby began life speaking its own language, Furbish, and gradually learned English over time. 1.8 million of the toys were sold during their release year, with another 14 million the following year. The Furby is still a popular toy today, having evolved to a more technologically advanced model, featuring LCD eyes and its own mobile app. Everybody wanted a bit of 'Fastest Finger First' back in 1999 and Chris Tarrant took over the nation's living rooms as the interactive board game version of the show became the must-have present. Many will remember playing the game on Christmas day for the first time, and will cringe at the thought that it is now considered a 'vintage' board game. After an initial release in 1996, the Pokémon Nintendo game was another hit in 1999. The game focused on finding, capturing and training creatures known as Pokémon.Special Counsel Jack Smith on Monday moved to dismiss the case against US President-elect Donald Trump for allegedly conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden. Smith, in a filing with the judge in Washington presiding over the historic case, said it should be dropped in light of a long-standing Justice Department policy not to prosecute a sitting president. The special counsel asked District Judge Tanya Chutkan to dismiss the case "without prejudice" -- leaving open the possibility it could be revived after Trump leaves office four years from now. Smith paused the election interference case earlier this month after Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. "The Government's position on the merits of the defendant's prosecution has not changed," Smith said in the filing with Chutkan. "But the circumstances have." "It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President," Smith said. "As a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated." Trump's communications director Steven Cheung welcomed the move to dismiss the case, calling it a "major victory for the rule of law." "The American People and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country," Cheung said in a statement. Trump is accused of conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding -- the session of Congress called to certify Biden's win, which was violently attacked on January 6, 2021, by a mob of the then-president's supporters. Trump is also accused of seeking to disenfranchise US voters with his false claims that he won the 2020 election. Smith charged Trump with mishandling top secret documents after leaving the White House, but that case was tossed out by a federal judge in Florida, a Trump appointee, on the grounds that Smith was unlawfully appointed. Smith had appealed that dismissal but is now expected to drop the appeal. Trump also faces two state cases -- in New York and Georgia. He was convicted in New York in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election to stop her from revealing an alleged 2006 sexual encounter. Judge Juan Merchan has postponed sentencing while he considers a request from Trump's lawyers that the conviction be thrown out in light of the Supreme Court ruling in July that an ex-president has broad immunity from prosecution. In Georgia, Trump faces racketeering charges over his efforts to subvert the 2020 election results in the southern state, but that case will likely be frozen while he is in office under the policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. cl/bgsWhy Samantha Bee Bailed On CNN’s ‘Have I Got News for You’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team on Tuesday signed an agreement to allow the Justice Department to conduct background checks on his nominees and appointees after a weeks-long delay. The step lets Trump transition aides and future administration staffers obtain security clearances before Inauguration Day to access classified information about ongoing government programs, an essential step for a smooth transiton of power. It also allows those nominees who are up for Senate confirmation to face the background checks lawmakers want before voting on them. Teams of investigators have been standing by to process clearances for Trump aides and advisers. “This agreement with the Department of Justice will ensure President Trump and his team are ready on Day 1 to begin enacting the America First Agenda that an overwhelming majority of our nation supported on Election Day,” said Susie Wiles, Trump’s designate to be White House chief of staff. Related Articles The announcement comes a week after the Trump transition team with the Biden White House to allow transition staff to coordinate with the existing federal workforce before taking office on Jan. 20. The White House agreement was supposed to have been signed by Oct. 1, according to the Presidential Transition Act, and the Biden White House had issued both public and private appeals for Trump’s team to sign on. Security clearances are required to access classified information, including on ongoing operations and threats to the nation, and the Biden White House and outside experts have emphasized to Trump’s team the importance of having cleared personnel before Inauguration Day so they could be fully briefed and ready to run the government. Republican Senators have also insisted on FBI background checks for Trump’s nominees before they face confirmation votes, as has been standard practice for decades. Lawmakers have been particularly interested in seeing the findings of reviews into Trump’s designated nominee for defense secretary, former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, and for Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to be director of national intelligence. “That’s why it’s so important that we have an FBI background check, a committee review of extensive questions and questionnaires, and a public hearing,” said. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine on Monday. John Thune, the incoming Senate Republican leader, said the Trump team “understands there’s going to have to be a thorough vetting of all these nominees.”New Delhi: In May 1992, Finance Minister Manmohan Singh attended a crucial presentation in the conference room on the ground floor of North Block, home to the Finance Ministry. It was a moment that would reshape India’s financial landscape. The discussion centered on a revolutionary proposal: building a modern stock exchange that would transform the trading ecosystem, challenge the dominance of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and set a new benchmark for transparency and efficiency in India’s capital markets. Also Read: Manmohan Singh's 1991 Reforms: The Move That Changed India's Future Forever The presentation was led by Ravi Narain, a key figure selected for the assignment, along with two consultants and the guidance of RH Patil, Narain’s mentor from the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI). Also present was S S Nadkarni, then chairman of IDBI. Together, they unveiled the blueprint for what would become the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Drawing inspiration from the Swedish model of a for-profit exchange, they envisioned a system that would break away from the broker-driven model dominating Indian stock markets. The NSE would adopt an order-driven approach to enhance liquidity and ensure a unified order book for the entire nation. Manmohan Singh’s role was instrumental in this transformational journey. As the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms, Singh understood the need for modernising financial infrastructure to support the liberalised economy. His approval, along with that of G V Ramakrishna, chairman of the newly empowered Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), set the stage for the NSE to take shape. Today, the NSE stands as India’s largest stock exchange, a testament to the forward-thinking leadership of Manmohan Singh and the determination of those who shared his vision. Manmohan Singh's 1991 ReformsIn 1991, Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister of India, when the three key reforms -- liberalisation, globalistation and privatisation -- were brought in to save the economy from the brink of a collapse. Singh played a pivotal role in liberalising the Indian economy during a time of immense financial strain. Faced with soaring fiscal and balance of payments deficits, and foreign exchange reserves sufficient for just a few weeks of imports, the government turned to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for assistance — the first and only instance of its kind — pledging gold reserves to secure funds. On Thursday night, Singh breathed his last at Delhi's AIIMs. He was 92. ( ) shares have been very volatile in recent weeks. In October, a flurry of negative media coverage relating to the logistics solutions company's founder sent its shares crashing deep into the red. Since then, the WiseTech share price has staged a big comeback and have now risen almost 30% from their October low. But where next for this popular ASX 200 stock? Let's see what analysts are saying about it. Is it too late to buy WiseTech shares? The team at Goldman Sachs doesn't believe it is too late to invest in the company. Particularly given its investor day update this week, which the broker believes supported its buy thesis. Commenting on the update, Goldman said: WTC hosted its investor day today and provided a detailed overview of its product roadmap and plans to become the operating system for global logistics, alongside highlighting the breadth and depth of its executive team. The broker notes that management spoke about its huge long term growth opportunity. It adds: Detailed product presentations highlighted the opportunity to deliver significant long-term growth – all of which could be material drivers if successful. CTO is estimated to reduce customer costs by 40-50% (WTC to share in these savings) and has the requisite scale and customer value to drive very strong uptake. However even 'smaller' products within CargoWise Next such as Electronic Bills of Lading offer significant opportunity ($6.5bn industry cost of physical Bills – noting 9 key global carriers committing to fully digitizing this by 2030). Goldman also highlights that the Richard White's decision to step down as founder CEO into a different role could end up being a big positive. It explains: WTC is confident that its new leadership structure will work, with Richard White expected to spend more time on driving product development + strategy (increasing from 20% of his time as CEO, to aspirationally 95% in his new role). Time to buy In light of the above, Goldman Sachs has reiterated its buy rating and $138.00 price target on WiseTech shares. It then concludes: We are positive on WiseTech's strong competitive position which contributes to efficiency gains for LGFF's. Over the short-to-medium term we expect WiseTech's earnings profile to benefit from new product releases such as Container Transport Optimizer, as well as continuing to grow penetration of their core business. We expect WiseTech will continue to focus on product development over the long-term, which should underpin margin expansion and earnings growth. Hence, with the risk/reward profile skewed to the upside we are Buy rated.Snowflake EVP Christian Kleinerman sells $2.7 million in stock
A pro-Putin, far-right politician won the primary round of Romania ’s presidential election on Sunday after he went viral on social media. Călin Georgescu, 62, had gained minimal support for the majority of his independent presidential bid. Ahead of the electoral primary, however, his eccentric campaign clips on TikTok , including videos of him riding on a horse and practicing martial arts began trending on the app. Georgescu, who supports religious, ultra-conservative views, won 23 percent of the vote on Sunday. He claimed that he spent “zero” money on his campaign and instead put his faith in God. “It’s a TikTok win,” Romanian analyst and historian Ion M. Ionita told the Financial Times . “You don’t need a party. You just need to go viral on social media, and he has gone viral for sure.” Ionita said mainstream parties in the country are struggling to resonate with voters after years of scandals and economic hardship. “Voters are vulnerable to messages that have no connection with reality,” he added. Georgescu’s success reportedly denotes a significant shift in Romanian attitudes toward Russia and is the latest sign of how Trump-style populism is gaining traction in Europe. Rep. Lauren Boebert is the latest politician to launch a Cameo — with videos starting at $250 for a personal message. “Hey, Cameo, it’s your girl from Colorado, Lauren Boebert,” she said in the page’s introductory video. “Whether you or someone you know needs an America First pep talk, if you want to surprise friends or family with a message for a special day, or if you just want to know my thoughts on whatever’s on your mind, Cameo is the place to connect with me.” Boebert’s foray into Cameo comes just days after former Rep. Matt Gaetz also launched a page on the site after withdrawing his name for consideration for attorney general. While Gaetz is charging $500 for a video, fellow disgraced Republican Rep. George Santos, who first started Cameo in 2023, charges $250, like Boebert. The House Ethics Committee notes that representatives can earn up to $31,815 from outside sources. Hulk Hogan hinted at a possible position in Donald Trump ’s incoming administration during a Fox News interview on Saturday. “My president said, ‘You know something, you’d be great to run the President’s Council on Physical Fitness,‘” Hogan told host Brian Kilmeade . The council advises the president on policies related to healthy eating and fitness. The current council is in place until Sept. 30, 2025. Hogan continued, “At the end of the day, when I was in the back at Madison Square Garden after the whole rally, we were talking about Robert Kennedy, I was talking about nutrition, and how many foreign countries won’t even let their people eat the food that we eat here in America.” Trump tapped vaccine skeptic Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, a move that has worried health-care groups and experts. “It’s so bad, and it’s poisoned a generation of kids,” Hogan added. “And at the end of the day, we start talking about physical fitness.” Donald Trump has moved on from Matt Gaetz and picked a new contender to endorse for his spot in Congress: Jimmy Patronis, the CFO of Florida. Trump wrote on Truth Social “RUN, JIMMY, RUN!” and endorsed him, despite no official announcement from Patronis. Patronis has said that he was “strongly considering” going for the role of Florida Congressional District 1 in an X post on Nov. 19. “We’ve got an historic opportunity to fight the swamp, end lawfare and return power back into the hands of Americans,” the Republican wrote. After Trump’s preemptive endorsement, Patronis seemed convinced to run. “Put me to work, Mr. President! @realDonaldTrump I am here to serve,” he posted on Nov. 25. The position opened up after Gaetz was nominated for attorney general by the president-elect and resigned from his seat, only to drop out of the running for top prosecutor. “A fourth generation Floridian from the beautiful Panhandle, and owner of an iconic seafood restaurant , Jimmy has been a wonderful friend to me, and to MAGA," Trump wrote in his post endorsing Patronis. The special primary will take place Jan. 28, with the general election occurring on April 1. The Daily Beast Podcast episodes are released every Thursday. Nearly three in five Americans approve of President-elect Donald Trump ’s handling of his transition to the White House , according to a CBS/YouGov poll released Monday. Over half of Americans—55 percent—also said they were “happy” or “satisfied” with Trump’s election victory. Underscoring the poll, however, was a sense of doom and fatigue among the Democratic base: Just 15 percent of Democrats said they feel excited or optimistic as Trump prepares to take office, and only 44 percent said they feel motivated to oppose him. “The bottom line is this: Republicans are very motivated by Donald Trump’s win and, compared to eight years ago, Democrats are just really, really, tired,” said CNN data reporter Harry Enten, as he talked through the poll results on air. “They have just given up.” Enten also noted Trump’s +18 net approval rating, which stands in contrast to the +1 he had after winning the 2016 election. Much improved from 2016, this Trump presidential transition is getting 2 thumbs up from Americans. Trump's net approval rating is up 17 pts (to +18 pts). A majority (53%) are excited/optimistic for Trump's coming term. Trump also seems to have exhausted his Democratic rivals: pic.twitter.com/2dGCT6h5po Department store behemoth Macy’s has suffered an embarrassing faux pas after it was revealed that an accounting employee hid up to $154 million in delivery expenses in a years-long scheme. The employee, who has not been named, has been given the boot but Macy’s has been forced to delay its quarterly results after stumbling across the matter that stems back to 2021, the Wall Street Journal reported . However, mystery surrounds the strange saga because the ex-worker didn’t actually pocket the funds, and Macy’s won’t say how they were busted. “While Macy’s cannot control the actions of every employee, it is worrying that these are intentional accounting errors that go back to 2021,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of research firm GlobalData. Saunders added that it “also raises the question as to the competence of the company’s auditors.” The company’s auditor, KPMG, has refused to comment. Elon Musk had some relatable thoughts on the new “department” of government efficiency he’s been tasked to head with Vivek Ramaswamy . “I still can’t believe DOGE is real,” he wrote on his social media platform X on Sunday night, followed by that emoji where the face is crying from laughter. After Musk powered Donald Trump ’s return to the White House, pouring an estimated $200 million into his campaign, the president-elect announced he and Ramaswamy would lead an outside advisory panel aiming to slash $2 trillion in government spending—a plan that even conservative economists have called a “fantasy.” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Fla.) will lead a new House Oversight Committee working with the DOGE panel—an appointment that some of Taylor Greene’s fellow lawmakers have likened to a punishment, not a reward—and Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) is forming a DOGE Senate Caucus. Critics have pointed out that DOGE has no budget, no offices, no personnel and no long-term mandate, but Musk doesn’t seem to care. “I think it’s actually going to work,” he wrote on X. But I think it’s actually going to work Liam Payne had a fear of being locked in rooms that dated back to his One Direction days and may have been trying to escape from his hotel room when he fell from the second-floor balcony to his death, according to TMZ. Former One Direction star Payne, 31, died after the incident in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October and prosecutors confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant. TMZ reports that Payne had escaped from another room via a balcony as recently as mid-September and claims that sources told them the hotel was aware he may try and get out of the room via the balcony. Images obtained by TMZ reportedly capture the moments before Liam was forcefully put into his room. Minutes later, he fell from the balcony. According to a 911 transcript obtained by the site, a hotel employee told a 911 operator: “I don’t know whether his life may be in danger. He is in a room with a balcony, and, well, we’re a little afraid...” The autopsy indicated he died from “multiple trauma.” Scouted selects products independently. During the presidential campaign of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, hailed as the golden boy of the party, repeatedly emphasized the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s power challenges. At various public events, including the 7th Annual Colloquium in Lagos, Fashola asserted that the ineptitude of the previous administration should not be repeated, boldly stating that “Any serious government can fix the power problem within six months.” Nigerians placed their trust in him, influenced by the transformation witnessed under his leadership in Lagos between 2007 and 2015. In 2014, during a significant ceremony held at the Blue Roof, Lagos Television premises, to mark Mr. Fashola’s 2,600 days in office, he made a bold assertion: “The only way to get uninterrupted electricity supply in the country is to vote out the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming 2015 general elections.” This statement was backed by his notable achievements, including effectively handling the Ebola crisis and creating approximately 500,000 jobs for the citizens of Lagos State over eight years. Mr. Fashola’s administration also left a lasting legacy with the construction of three bridges, including the iconic Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, and the completion of five (5) Independent Power Projects, notably the one at Alausa, which significantly reduced reliance on generators. Given his impressive track record, it’s understandable why many believed in Fashola’s assurance that the ruling party would address the national power grid issues and ensure adequate power supply to the people. The country is in dire need of an immediate solution to its power supply issues. Many young citizens possess the drive and passion to contribute to the nation’s development, yet they are hindered by the lack of adequate power supply. Without reliable electricity, aspiring entrepreneurs find it exceedingly difficult to establish and sustain businesses, such as operating POS services, due to frequent power outages and the inability to charge devices. The current state of total darkness or erratic power supply significantly hampers the growth of small and medium-scale enterprises. It’s crucial to recognize that no nation can achieve sustainable growth and development without ensuring reliable access to power. The Egypt Megaproject stands as a testament to Siemens’ historic achievement, delivering 14.4 GW of power capacity to Egypt’s grid in a record-setting 27.5 months from financial closure. This monumental endeavor not only alleviated persistent power shortages but also propelled Egypt toward long-term power security, crucial for industrial growth. Additionally, the swift completion of two simple cycle power plants in Assiut and West Damietta, totaling 1,500 MW, within just eight months in 2015, further exemplifies the efficacy of visionary leadership and practical implementation. While comparing ourselves to China’s Belt and Road Initiative may seem ambitious, studying such initiatives could offer valuable insights into addressing our own challenges with consistent power shortages. It is evident that effective leadership is paramount in driving the reform agenda for our country, and the support of the people is crucial in this journey towards a greater Nigeria. The Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy deserves commendation for its proactive measures, including the introduction of the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Program. This initiative has been well-received by Nigerians as it offers a promising platform for success in the IT sector. However, to truly maximize the impact of such programs, reliable electricity is indispensable. Access to power is essential for powering up gadgets and enabling active participation in training programs. Therefore, it is imperative that efforts to improve electricity supply align with the goals of the ministry to ensure the success of initiatives aimed at empowering Nigerians in the digital age. When the current minister was appointed, his first initiative was to start a weekly political socio-event, capturing all his former political associates from his former political party. This went on for months, neglecting the core mandate given to him by the presidency. It raises questions about the minister’s understanding of the urgency and uniqueness of the ministry’s challenges, as evident in his preoccupation with political mandates extending far beyond his current tenure. The current minister is not in sync with the presidency’s renewed hope agenda. The country needs an urgent solution but often times when we see the minister appear in a gathering, it has always been in a political setting which wouldn’t have a positive impact on the general populace. The will and experience aren’t there and neither of the two can be forced into a man’s ability. Given the critical nature of this ministry, it was a mistake to treat it as a trial-and-error endeavor. It is evident that the current minister is completely bewildered. This calls for a reassessment of our approach. Despite numerous challenges, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has failed to fulfill its mandate of efficiently transmitting power from generating stations to the people. Presently, the country boasts an installed power capacity of 12-16,000MW, yet even if we assume we’re generating 50% of this capacity, roughly 7GW, the transmission network has only managed to transmit about 4-5GW of power over the last eight years. This stagnant performance underscores the dire need for structural reforms within the agency. Given the pressing necessity for change, the co-ordinating minister should prioritize a comprehensive overhaul or restructuring of the agency. Egypt’s energy strategy has evolved beyond thermal stations, with a concerted effort to diversify into renewable sources. Beginning in 2016, the government prioritized solar, wind and conventional power, incorporating gas turbines while halting the development of hydropower stations. During the period from 2010 to 2022, significant progress was made, adding 16GW of power, largely attributed to wind and solar energy. Given the immense potential and demand in this sector, it is crucial to appoint a leader who not only comprehends the role but also possesses a resolute and non-controversial demeanor. The advancement proposed could significantly benefit small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), but it is essential for the president to take decisive action and assume control of the ministry. The progressives, typically afforded considerable leniency, have expressed dissatisfaction with the ministry’s performance thus far. It’s crucial to communicate the citizens’ discontent to the presidency promptly. There’s still ample opportunity to enact meaningful changes and rectify the course. However, failure to address the shortcomings of the ministry could have dire consequences. The country has been experiencing total grid collapse since time immemorial, however, between 2017 and 2023, the nation witnessed 46 grid collapses. It is accounted that in 2023 alone, the grid collapsed 12 times, accounting for 26%. The data received in performance hasn’t improved and if proper analysis of the Disco’s are examined also, it will equally give the same retrogressive output. No nation that is desirous of progress can actually achieve such with the present state of things. In the latest data released by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, most Discos have low performance in cash collection with very high billing efficiency, which has a very adverse effect on the AT & C losses of the companies. Oftentimes, there are regulations to improve the performance of the distribution companies but the major stumbling blocks are still with the government. If urgent action is not taken, we will continue to drag the same issues in 2027. Tunisia with a vision has recently concluded a plan to embark on a special power project called Tunisia-Italy Interconnector (ELMED). The ELMED Interconnector Project is a planned bi-directional power exchange link between Italy and Tunisia. The 600MW capacity project will be the first direct current connection between Europe and Africa. These are the kinds of initiatives that we know President Asiwaju for but unfortunately, no one can drive it in the Ministry of Power. Solutions to each of the various value chains in the power sector must be itemized and implemented as soon as possible, to guarantee adequate and uninterrupted power supply to the country. The citizens of the country want to stay back and develop their nation, which will give them the chance to compete with the rest of the world, but they need an adequate power supply. The only hope that they have is the belief that your capability is undoubted to deliver the renewed hope agenda. The young Nigerians who will benefit through the enormous jobs are counting on you while the SMEs don’t want to lose hope either. *Opeyemi writes from Lagos (Twitter: EquityOyo)LUQUE, Paraguay — Sake is perhaps more Japanese than the world-famous sushi. It's brewed in centuries-old mountaintop warehouses, savored in the country’s pub-like izakayas, poured during weddings and served slightly chilled for special toasts. The smooth rice wine that plays a crucial role in Japan's culinary traditions was enshrined on Wednesday by UNESCO on its list of the “intangible cultural heritage of humanity." At a meeting in Luque, Paraguay, members of UNESCO’s committee for safeguarding humanity's cultural heritage voted to recognize 45 cultural practices and products around the world, including Brazilian white cheese, Caribbean cassava bread and Palestinian olive oil soap. Unlike UNESCO’s World Heritage List, which includes sites considered important to humanity like the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Intangible Cultural Heritage designation names products and practices of different cultures that are deserving of recognition. Marta Escurra, Associated Press A Japanese delegation welcomed the announcement in Luque. “Sake is considered a divine gift and is essential for social and cultural events in Japan,” Kano Takehiro, the Japanese ambassador to UNESCO, told The Associated Press. The basic ingredients of sake are few: rice, water, yeast and koji, a rice mold that breaks down the starches into fermentable sugars like malting does in beer production. The whole two-month process of steaming, stirring, fermenting and pressing can be grueling. The rice — which wields tremendous marketing power as part of Japan's broader cultural identity — is key to the alcoholic brew. For a product to be categorized Japanese sake, the rice must be Japanese. Marta Escurra, Associated Press The UNESCO recognition, the delegation said, captured more than the craft knowledge of making high-quality sake. It also honored a tradition dating back some 1,000 years — sake makes a cameo in Japan’s famous 11th century novel, “The Tale of Genji,” as the drink of choice in the refined Heian court. Now, officials hope to restore sake's image as Japan's premier alcoholic drink even as the younger drinkers in the country switch to imported wine or domestic beer and whiskey. Japanese breweries also expressed hope the listing could give a lift to the country's export economy as the popularity of sake booms around the world and in the United States amid heightened interest in Japanese cuisine. “I hope that this will also be an opportunity for Japanese people to take another look at sake, shochu and awamori, which are the essence of their culture," Hitoshi Utsunomiya, director of the trade group Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, said in Tokyo. "I would like them to try it even once and see what it tastes like,” he said. Sake exports, mostly to the U.S. and China, now rake in over $265 million a year, according to the association. After the announcement, Takehiro raised a cypress box full of sake to toast the alcoholic brew and cultural rite. “It means a lot to Japan and to the Japanese,” he said of the UNESCO designation. "This will help to renew interest in traditional sake elaboration.” In Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he was “delighted” by UNESCO's recognition of traditional sake-making techniques, and he congratulated those dedicated to preserving and promoting the tradition. How to host the ultimate wine tasting How to host the ultimate wine tasting The crisp autumn air ushers in more than just pumpkin spice latte season. Consider cozying up inside with friends for a wine tasting and sharing delicious food and drinks with more complex flavors than cinnamon and sugar.Perhaps once thought of as stuffy affairs only for wine connoisseurs, today a tasting can be as casual as pouring a few bottles while doing another activity—say, bar games like darts or art activities like painting. The tasting can also be more traditional, especially if held at a winery or local wine shop, which is a great way to learn about what wines you might like to later serve at home. To host the ultimate wine tasting, it pays to do some R&D.One of the best aspects of hosting a wine tasting at home is that you get to establish the mood, tone, and guest list for the gathering—you can't pick a playlist when you sample wines at a bar or wine shop or make the dress code loungewear. So whether the mood is serious or playful, sophisticated or laid-back, the key to a successful tasting is enjoying and appreciating the wine and having fun with friends and family.Of course, there are a few other things to figure out along the way. Peerspace put together a few tips for hosting your wine-tasting party. Canva Tip 1: Determine the vibe A tasting party is all about sampling different wines and evaluating and hopefully enjoying them—and there are a variety of ways to do that. Would you like to host a playful gathering where each guest brings a mystery bottle of wine within a certain price range—a BYOB affair? Or would it be better to have more control over which wines are featured by curating and supplying all the wines as a host? This decision sets the tone—a tasting where guests contribute wine can be a bit of a free-for-all, whereas one where you select wines you supply allows guests to sit back and simply enjoy. And you don't have to break the bank to buy excellent wines—there are lots of wine experts ready to share their affordable picks. How much folks know about wine differs—and that's a good thing. Tastings are group learning experiences. Expertise isn't necessary to host or attend a tasting, but it is helpful to think about what will keep guests comfortable and having fun. Decide whether the vibe will be relaxed and laid-back, like friends sipping wine fireside, or more upbeat and formal. Think about elements like the atmosphere and the location, and consider whether folks will be seated or standing. Will you have a spirited playlist (couldn't resist) or live music? Do you want an expert to introduce each wine, or will you be that expert? Consider how guests will share their thoughts on what they are tasting. Do you want to just talk about them or do something more organized, like take notes or give ratings? Then supply notebooks or notecards and pencils, with categories or questions established ahead of time—all of which can reflect your evening's tone as well. Canva Tip 2: Know your numbers How many people to invite is a question largely informed by the answers to tip #1: Are you having a big, formal affair or an intimate catch-up with close friends? Or something in between?Whatever the case, an RSVP is essential because not only do you need to plan the setup of the space, but you must also make sure there's enough wine for everyone to taste, including each of the wines featured. There's nothing worse than a tasting that runs dry!The math to determine how much wine you need considers the size of the tasting pours—a full glass of wine at a restaurant is usually around 5 ounces, which yields around five glasses of wine from a standard bottle. For tastings, you'll want to do less, depending on how many wines you are featuring—say, 2 ounces if you'll be trying a lot of different wines.Experts agree, having more wine than you need is always a good idea—that way you can send guests home with a bottle should there be a prize at the end of the night. Canva Tip 3: Set a theme Picking a theme is essential to curating the selection of wines—it's the organizing principle behind your selections. Otherwise, your tasting might as well be just walking down the wine aisle at the grocery store and taking sips from random bottles. There's too much wine out there not to be strategic about this.Plus, a theme helps you to tell the story of each wine better—it's the plot line of the night, if you will. Common themes are types of wine, regions they are from, or even price points—really, one can get as creative as they wish. For inspiration, check out local wine shops and see what they do for tastings. Often, they will follow seasonality and group wines in novel ways for their own in-house tastings. DavideAngelini // Shutterstock Tip 4: Don't forget food Don't let food be an afterthought for the festivities—after all, food can enhance particular qualities of wine and vice versa. There are many rules around what foods to pair with which wines, but consider this simple advice from Alder Yarrow's Vinography: "Stick with eating good food and drinking good wine."Since the focus is on the wines, allow the drinks to determine what food makes sense, but don't overthink it. Food is a supporting character here—at the very least, guests will need something to soak up all the alcohol (unless you are spitting it out). Eating foods that contain a mixture of protein, fats, and carbs when drinking helps increase the rate of alcohol elimination. Whether it's a full meal or heavy hors d'oeuvres, thoughtful noshes are necessary. Canva Tip 5: Small pours = big fun The bottom line is, however you do it, hosting the ultimate wine tasting should be fun. Wine can feel intimidating to many people, but most wine experts are passionate, inspired folks who want to share what they know and help you find wines you like. So visit your local wine store or winemaker and ask questions. There are good guides specifically concerning how to taste wine.Dig a little, taste a lot, and have fun. It's all research for your next ultimate wine tasting.Story editing by Carren Jao. Additional editing by Kelly Glass. Copy editing by Kristen Wegrzyn. Elite Nail Spa in Acworth Voted "Best of Georgia 2024"
Niels Arestrup, who has died aged 75, had been a stalwart of French theatre and cinema since the 1970s, but his profile was raised internationally in the first decade of this century by two films directed by Jacques Audiard . In The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) , a reimagining of James Toback’s 1978 thriller Fingers, Arestrup was the brutish slumlord now fallen on hard times, and increasingly reliant on a son (Romain Duris) who is torn between a thuggish, disreputable life and his dreams of being a classical pianist. For Audiard’s ambitious thriller A Prophet (2009) , he was cast as another corrosive patriarch, this time a Corsican ruling the roost behind bars and pulling the strings of a vulnerable new prisoner, played by Tahar Rahim. Eventually, the puppet turns the tables on the puppet-master. Arestrup captures acutely the former kingpin’s ignominious decline. “What we see etched on [his] face is pathetic loneliness and the horror of dying alone in prison,” wrote Peter Bradshaw in this paper. Among the nine César awards that went to A Prophet was one for Arestrup for best supporting actor, a prize he had already scooped for The Beat That My Heart Skipped. A third César came his way for Bertrand Tavernier’s political comedy The French Minister (2013). His portrayals of unsavoury bullies were not limited to his films with Audiard. In the harrowing Our Children (2013) , he was again paired with Rahim; this time, they were father and adopted son, with the older man, a physician, exerting an invidious influence on the younger one’s marriage. He was another malign paternal figure in You Will Be My Son (2011) , in which he played the overbearing owner of a prestigious Bordeaux vineyard. His resentful sneer and off-white, nicotine-tinted locks called to mind a down-at-heel department-store Santa. In 2013, the critic Kenneth Turan named him “the most quietly terrifying presence in film today”. The Observer’s Philip French called him “confidently menacing”. That feeling was not confined to his acting. There had long been allegations of violence toward female co-stars: he was accused of slapping Isabelle Adjani and trying to strangle Myriam Boyer, though he never faced any criminal charges. He was born in Montreuil, to a Breton mother, who worked as a typist as well as on an assembly line making radios, and a Danish father, who was a manager at a Testut scales factory. Arestrup was 20 when he found work in Paris, first in a pizzeria, then selling carpets. There was a job waiting for him in his father’s factory, but he happened to take an acting class with Tania Balachova at the Théâtre de la Gâité Montparnasse. She said: “I have nothing special to tell you. You are an actor ... you have nothing to do with it, that’s how it is.” Immediately he was on a new path. “I told my parents that I felt good there, that it was a world that attracted me, [and] it was a worry for them,” he said in 2021. “I took the risk, as they say in poker. I went all-in.” He later studied with the actor Andreas Voutsinas, who coached Warren Beatty, Jane Fonda and Faye Dunaway. Voutsinas approached Arestrup after seeing him in a production of Crime and Punishment. “He suggested that I work with him. He saw my flaws very clearly.” The issue, he explained, was that Arestrup “wanted to seduce, to be strong, to be masculine ... I broke bottles, I hit, I drank a lot. This behaviour was reflected in my work. I was excessive. Voutsinas told me: ‘You don’t have to do this. By simply being yourself ... you will become much more interesting.’” He became established in theatre in the early 1970s. His earliest film appearances came in Alain Resnais’ political drama Stavisky, where he was Trotsky’s secretary Rudolph Klement, and Miss O’Gynie et les Hommes Fleurs (both 1974), in which he played one half of a gay couple whose relationship is threatened by the arrival in their village of a young woman. In the same year, Arestrup was a rough-and-ready Brando-like presence, complete with Stanley Kowalski-style white T-shirt, in Chantal Akerman’s groundbreaking debut Je Tu Il Elle. He played a truck driver who picks up a hitchhiker, played by Akerman, and delivers lewd monologues to her en route. He was cast after Akerman approached him one evening to offer the role. “When do we shoot?” he asked. “Right now,” she replied. The crew was waiting nearby. He was capable of bringing fresh shading to time-worn characters, as he did in Peter Brook’s 1981 stage revival of The Cherry Orchard. The New York Times noted that his Lopakhin was “not the boorish rustic we often find ... but a man of considerable sensitivity ... Lopakhin has suppressed the lyrical side of himself, but the instinct is there. In Mr Arestrup’s portrayal, we saw a man lacking in table manners but not in taste of sympathy. Instead of wondering, as we sometimes do, why Varya wants to marry such an oaf, we wondered why he wanted to marry her ...” In 1991, Arestrup starred in István Szabó’s Meeting Venus, as a Hungarian conductor at the centre of a chaotic production of Wagner’s Tannhäuser, alongside Glenn Close as the initially icy opera singer who thaws out in his presence. Following the success of A Prophet, Steven Spielberg cast him as the grandfather to a young girl in his adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s first world war novel War Horse (2011). In Volker Schlöndorff’s film of Cyril Gély’s play Diplomacy (2014), Arestrup reprised his stage performance as General Dietrich von Choltitz, who disobeys Hitler’s orders to destroy Paris in the prelude to the allies’ arrival in 1944. In 2021, he starred on stage in 88 Fois l’Infini (88 Times Infinity), a play written by his wife, Isabelle Le Nouvel, whom he married in 2012, and based on an event from his own past: his discovery at the age of 18 that he was not, as he had been led to believe, an only child, but had a half-brother living in Denmark. About his increasing success, he was resolutely unfazed. “I never wanted fame,” he said. “The only topic of conversation that doesn’t interest me personally is me.” He is survived by Le Nouvel and their twins, a son and a daughter.
