Lawyer and former member of Parliament Jason Azzopardi has filed a request for a magisterial inquiry to be launched into the Nadur road project carried out by the Gozo Ministry. Azzopardi said that he filed the application into the road project which ended up costing millions more than it was meant to on Monday. In his application, Azzopardi singled out Minister Clint Camilleri, permanent secretary for the Gozo Ministry John Borg, and architects Godwin Agius, and Andrew Ellul. The request asks that the men be investigated for possible crimes, indicating some crimes allegedly committed by all, and others by one or more of the men. "I asked for an investigation into possible offenses, including bribery, criminal association, false declarations, fraud, and money laundering," Azzopardi wrote on Facebook. The aim of asking for an inquiry is to preserve evidence, including messages, emails and documents, he said. Azzopardi also says in his application that he received information protected by professional secrecy that a €700,000 bribe was paid on these public works "under the guise of consultancy services". The lawyer said that he filed this request for an inquiry following the conclusion of a National Audit Office investigation. His court application also mentions articles which had appeared in local media, including The Shift News. The project concerns Triq L-Imġarr, a road which connects Nadur with Għajnsielem. The National Audit Office had criticised the Gozo Ministry for how it handled the major roadworks project, saying that there was insufficient planning and poor management which resulted in the project being substantially more expensive than it should have been. The initial budget for the works in Triq l-Imġarr was set at €1.8 million after damages on the road resulted in the need for emergency works in order to keep it safe. However, the NAO pointed out that the Gozo Ministry realised that it needed to enter into a second agreement with the contractor because the first "did not cater for the actual requirements of these roads, which were in a more precarious condition than expected." By December 2023, the total road construction cost reached €17 million, while a further €1.5 million were incurred for other ancillary costs. Back in March 2020, Minister Clint Camilleri had said that the project would cost €8 million. The end result was that the project went €10.5 million over budget. Minister Clint Camilleri made a post on social media, describing the allegations against him as political persecution. "The political persecution against me and anyone working for the Government continues. Another request for a magisterial inquiry has been filed, by the same people, on Christmas Eve. This time on a Government project that others had abandoned, and that others gave up on and left an entire village without its main access point. Furthermore, in recent weeks, there have been manoeuvres against me, against my family and other people. Instances that include illegal actions against me that have been reported to the Police." "I understand that being in politics requires accepting being under scrutiny, and I accept this without hesitation. However, what has happened in recent weeks was not scrutiny," he said, but "a senseless attack and coordinated vendetta," Camilleri said. Regarding the allegations, the minister said: "I categorically deny all the insinuations made. I have no problem answering questions when the need arises." Earlier in December, lawyer Jason Azzopardi had filed a request for a separate magisterial inquiry into a "racket" in Gozo which he alleged spans both the Gozo Ministry - headed by Clint Camilleri - and Transport Malta - where his wife works, regarding favourable mooring spaces in Mgarr harbour.
After serving Kelowna for six and a half years, Vice and Virtue Brewing is shutting its doors. The brewery announced on Dec. 9 that it'll be closing its doors on Dec. 21 and new owners will take over. Those new owners are the same as those who own Red Bird Brewing and will take over the lease on Jan. 1, 2025. According to Vice and Virtue co-owner Matt Wentzell, the sale has been in the works for the last few months. "We put a lot of work into this, so it's not like a decision that we took lightly by any means," said Wentzell. "We have five different owners and then all of us have different jobs and careers, but we've put a tremendous amount of effort into the brewery." Wentzell did admit that raising costs played a role in the decision as well as a decline in tourism this year. "To be honest, it's been difficult after COVID to have a brewery. Times are not good for restaurants or breweries or hospitality in general these days, right?" said Wentzell. "I'm sure I'm not the first person who's mentioned that. It's been challenging times, margins have been thinner and thinner. We had an opportunity where a new buyer came along with a very clear vision and the finances to be able to pull it off." But Wentzell and the other owners are happy with the sale and what Red Bird's plans are for the future. "We were really happy to be able to pass the torch to a new ownership group that's going to keep the space of the brewery and that definitely has a great vision," added Wentzell. "We're a community growing and thriving in the way that it should." The owners of Vice and Virtue were unified in the decision of the sale, despite how tough of a choice it was. "It's super bittersweet. Like we started this brewery in one of the original partner's garages, we were home-brewing," said Wentzell. "We identified an opportunity for craft beer here in town because it was kind of under-serviced here in Kelowna at that time. We wanted to give people some opportunity to give people another delicious craft beer option. And we did and I think we did a great job with that." Vice and Virtue opened on June 11, 2018, and Wentzell stated it wouldn't have stayed open without the help of the community. He added one of his highlights from the last few years is seeing people around town drinking their beer, whether at restaurants or buying them at a liquor store. As for the outcry and support the owners have received since Monday's announcement, Wentzell said it's been heartfelt. "I don't spend tons of time on social media these days, but I had to go on it and check out the responses," he said. "We have regulars who are so sad to see it go. It's honestly emotional to think about. The response has been overwhelmingly positive." Wentzell pointed out one story he heard, where one person reached out to them saying they had their first date with their partner at Vice and Virtue and now they're married. As for the future, the five co-owners have no involvement in what Red Bird is going to do with the space but say it will be kept as a brewery. Vice and Virtue is also giving its brewing recipes to Red Bird, so beers like Love Potion and Brave New World might live on. Additionally, Wentzell is encouraging the public to continue to support local. "People want to continue to have small independently run businesses, whether that's breweries like ours or distilleries, wineries, restaurants, clothing stores, anything, the time is now to support these local businesses before they cease to exist," said Wentzell. "It's tough times for a lot of local small businesses right now, and people in Kelowna really need to get out and vote with their wallets. Go support your favourite local things, because I know, you know, all of them can use their help right now. Whether that's buying a gift card gift over the holidays, or just going and spending money where you can."Investors with a lot of money to spend have taken a bullish stance on Dollar Tree DLTR . [PRO] Investing in mid-caps may be the way to go in 2025 Mid-cap stocks could be the sweet spot for investors in 2025, having been outperforming recently. Many investors expect further gains for mid-caps, which offer better quality businesses than small-caps, as well as stronger growth prospects than large-caps. Technology stocks have underpinned the impressive rally in US stocks this year. But they are not immune from the laws of gravity. Monday's session saw large technology stocks underperform the broader market. Oracle missed forecasts and AMD was downgraded by Bank of America . But perhaps the biggest news of the day concerned Nvidia, whose shares have surged an astounding 188% this year. China's State Administration for Market Regulation opened an investigation into the chipmaker in relation to the acquisition of Mellanox and some agreements made during the acquisition. The news prompted Nvidia's shares to fall 2.6% overnight. The development suggests that while the year is ending, the fight for tech dominance around the world may just be intensifying. Competition between the U.S. and China over chipmaking is rising, with the Biden administration on Dec. 2 announcing a slew of curbs targeting semiconductor toolmakers. China then retaliated by banning exports of critical minerals such as gallium, and on the same day, four of the country's top industry associations said Chinese companies should be wary of buying U.S. chips as they were "no longer safe" and buy locally instead. Previous trade skirmishes have centered on areas such as metals, farm products, and automobiles. With a tougher stance on China expected from the incoming Trump administration, could the next trade war instead be focused around chips, which arguably have permeated every facet of our lives? — CNBC's Samantha Subin contributed to this report.John Legend's 8-Year-Old Daughter Luna Is Asking for This “Compromise”
