ZURICH (AFP) – Billionaires have seen their combined wealth shoot up 121 per cent over the past decade to USD14 trillion, Swiss bank UBS said, with tech billionaires’ coffers filling the fastest. Switzerland’s biggest bank, which is among the world’s largest wealth managers, said the number of dollar billionaires increased from 1,757 to 2,682 over the past 10 years, peaking in 2021 with 2,686. The 10th edition of UBS’s annual Billionaire Ambitions report, which tracks the wealth of the world’s richest people, found that billionaires have comfortably outperformed global equity markets over the past decade. The report documents “the growth and investment of great wealth, as well as how it’s being preserved for future generations and used to have a positive effect on society”, said Head of strategic clients at UBS global wealth management Benjamin Cavalli. Between 2015 and 2024, total billionaire wealth increased by 121 per cent from USD6.3 trillion to USD14.0 trillion – while the MSCI AC World Index of global equities rose 73 per cent. The wealth of tech billionaires increased the fastest, followed by that of industrialists. Worldwide, tech billionaires’ wealth tripled from USD788.9 billion in 2015 to USD2.4 trillion in 2024. “In earlier years, the new billionaires commercialised e-commerce, social media and digital payments; more recently they engineered the generative artificial intelligence (AI) boom, while also developing cyber-security, fintech, 3D printing and robotics,” UBS said. The report found that since 2020, the global growth trend had slowed due to declines among China’s billionaires. From 2015 to 2020, billionaire wealth grew globally at an annual rate of 10 per cent, but growth has plunged to one per cent since 2020. Chinese billionaire wealth more than doubled from 2015 to 2020, rising from USD887.3 billion to USD2.1 trillion, but has since fallen back to USD1.8 trillion. However, North American billionaire wealth has risen 58.5 per cent to USD6.1 trillion since 2020, “led by industrials and tech billionaires”. Meanwhile billionaires are relocating more frequently, with 176 having moved country since 2020, with Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Singapore and the United States (US) being popular destinations. In 2024, some 268 people became billionaires for the first time, with 60 per cent of them entrepreneurs. “The year’s new billionaires were mainly self-made,” said UBS. The report said US billionaires accrued the greatest gains in 2024, reinforcing the country’s place as the world’s main centre for billionaire entrepreneurs. Their wealth rose 27.6 per cent to USD5.8 trillion, or more than 40 per cent of billionaire wealth worldwide. Billionaires’ wealth from mainland China and Hong Kong fell 16.8 per cent to USD1.8 trillion, with the number of billionaires dropping from 588 to 501. Indian billionaires’ wealth increased 42.1 per cent to USD905.6 billion, while their number grew from 153 to 185. Western Europe’s total billionaire wealth rose 16.0 per cent to USD2.7 trillion – partly due to a 24-per cent increase in Swiss billionaires. UAE billionaires’ aggregate wealth rose 39.5 per cent to USD138.7 billion. UBS said billionaires faced an “uncertain world” over the next 10 years, due to high geopolitical tensions, trade barriers and governments with mounting spending requirements. Billionaires will therefore need to rely on their previous distinctive traits: “smart risk-taking, business focus and determination”. “Risk-taking billionaires are likely to be at the forefront of creating two technology-related industries of the future already taking shape: generative AI and renewables/electrification,” UBS predicted. And more flexible wealth planning will be needed as billionaire families move country and spread around the world. The heirs and philanthropic causes of baby boom billionaires are set to inherit an estimated USD6.3 trillion over the next 15 years, UBS said.1. A genius drying rack for preventing any sweater-shrinking mishaps in the dryer. These three mesh racks will help speed up the drying process while taking up minimal space. Plus, air-drying is gentler on the fabric than a tumble in the dryer, which can help extend the life of your sweaters. Promising review: "Big enough for size large sweaters. I love that it is instant to set up, holds multiple items, the mesh lets most clothes dry overnight, and it doesn't have any loose parts to lose. The layers collapse on each other, then fold up like a car shade, but with three wires to contend with, it takes a bit more force. If car shades are your nemesis, this is probably not for you, but if you've conquered car shade folding, the drying rack is quick and small to store. The storage bag appeared to be flimsy, but it has lasted for over a year of use with no problem." — Costume Shop Get it on Amazon for $13.99 . 2. A programmable AC booster fan that'll help warm those rooms that are significantly cooler than the rest of the house. It's meant to be mounted on existing floor or wall registers and will help increase airflow from your HVAC. Promising review: "My bedroom sits above the garage and has three exterior walls. It's an older home, so I question the insulation. The room has been unbearable in the extreme winter and the extreme summer. These vents have been such a huge game changer now that the temperature is cold. The room used to be unbearable to wake up in or just to go into because it would be so cold. I bought two of these for the room and it has made a difference in this room. I can get out of bed without dreading how cold it's going to be. I highly recommend these if you have a room that the HVAC system just doesn't seem to do its part in." — Cat Get it from Amazon for $59.99 (available in two colors and sizes). 3. Some restorative wipes because snow and cold winds have left your front door and shutters looking cloudy and grimy. These wipes are saturated with a solution that revives oxidized, faded, and sun-damaged surfaces bumpers, siding, mailboxes, grills, garden tools, painted surfaces, and more. Promising review: "My metal barstools were left on the balcony all winter because of a surprise three-day blizzard. After being buried in snow all winter, I thought for sure I would have to throw them out when I saw them in the spring. Looking at them now after using the product, no one would suspect that they weren’t new ones! " — Mom@home Get five wipes from Amazon for $12.97 . 4. A WD-40 pen (A pen! Genius!) to enjoy the squeak-quieting, hinge-lubricating, rust-preventing powers that you know and love from traditional WD-40 but in an easy-to-maneuver precise pen tip. Promising review: "I bought some years ago and I’ve used them in my work, keeping my rotary tools nice and easy to use. I gave my husband one (he worked for a utility company), and he was really impressed with what the pen could do with such a nice applicator. Nice and precise without an overspray. I also have a large dumpster for my business, and sometimes, in the winter, the lock freezes up, so I always have one in my pocket when I take the trash out in the winter . One day I caught the garbage trucks d the driver having problems with it. I said hold on, ran back inside, and came out with one of the pens. Presto! No problem at all. He was so impressed that I gave him mine to make his life easier. The. My last one ran out, and I didn’t find the one for years. Needless to say, I’m so grateful I found these on Amazon. I also gave one to my contractor friend who was grateful for the gift too. You need to get these!" — Char Behrens Get a three-pack from Amazon for $14.99 . 5. A KitchenAid attachment organizer if you plan to do a lot of baking this season but your shallow cabinets don't have room to hold all the add-ons you've purchased for your stand mixer. Take advantage of vertical space and store them under your cabinets and within reach! 3D Home Solution is a small biz based in Frisco, Texas that makes really genius home organizers. Promising review: "Just what I didn’t know I needed! My attachments didn’t have a good home. The whisk is too fat for my drawers, but I wanted to keep them together and near the mixer, so they just sat on a shelf. Now they have a home, and they’re not blocking the canisters on the shelf!" — Noora Get it from 3D Home Solution on Etsy for $11 (available in three colors). 6. A plush, self-warming pet bed so your pets can stay nice and toasty all season, thanks to the mylar insulation. (Reviewers with hairless cats say it's great for keeping their naked bbs cozy and warm.) Promising review: " My room gets incredibly cold during the day in the winter, so I've been looking for some form of self-heating cat bed to make sure my cat doesn't get too cold when I'm not home. I never liked the ones that needed to be turned on or plugged in since I needed them to be working when I was not home, and that felt like both a burn risk for my cat and a fire risk for my house. I landed on this bed as a compromise. I was worried my cat wouldn't go anywhere near it since she'd always loved a single ratty box from my storage closet more than anything I had gotten her before, but I decided to take the risk. Let me tell you, while she wouldn't go anywhere near it last night, I woke up this morning to find her curled up in it, and she has not budged all day. The only time she got up was to get a drink of water before crawling straight back in, but I felt the cushion and it's definitely radiating more heat than just a normal blanket. I'm pretty sure her smile says it all. Definitely worth the price for peace of mind that my cat's comfy and my house isn't going to burn down. " — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $23.88 . Check out BuzzFeed editor Jenae Sitzes ’s Aspen self-warming pet bed review for more deets! 7. A window insulator kit for keeping you warm *and* saving you money on your heating bills. The clear film shrinks to create an airtight lining to prevent drafts and heat loss. Promising review: "I buy this every winter, and it makes a BIG difference ! We have super-thin windows, and this works like a charm to stop 80% of the cold drafts. I find I can sit right next to the window without a problem after installing them. It's easy to install and looks invisible after you apply heat with a hair dryer. No one will be able to tell there's a film, and it'll look completely transparent after you apply heat. It was so satisfying to see the wrinkles disappear! It looks great, works great, and will save you energy! Win-win-win! " — Raymond Get a 10-window kit from Amazon for $23.80 (also available in a 5-window kit). 8. And a self-adhesive seal strip that'll soundproof a room while adding much-need insulation from drafts. You'll get two seals (totaling 16 feet) that are 9 millimeters thick. Promising review : "As a queer household we usually embrace anything not straight; we are highly open-minded and accepting. HOWEVER our crooked doorframes are the exception. Seeing our house is older than the concept of building codes and built by someone who apparently didn't believe in 'measure twice cut once' we were happy to find a cheap solution to the straight-up breezes in our kitchen! Severely cut down on the amount of wind coming through and improved the temperature in the mudroom in a matter of minutes! " — bitandbridle Get it from Amazon for $6.97+ (available in four colors). 9. A pack of stain-removing pads because I can't blame your pup for not wanting to go potty when it's negative degrees outside. These can handle your pet's occasional accidents (and yours, too!). Just lay them over the spot, give 'em a stomp to activate their cleaning powders, and watch the stain disappear — no bulky carpet steamer necessary! Promising review: "My dog hasn't had carpeting before and since we moved and she has access to two carpeted bedrooms, she has apparently decided those are way better than her potty pad in the kitchen. Keeping her on a schedule and using gates helps, but our currently never-ending Minnesota winter does not. These were great for a mix of cleaning up old spots I hadn't noticed in the second bedroom and picking up fresh accidents like this morning when she hopped out of bed while I was still sleeping. I love how easy they are, don't have to get down on my knees to clean up. It's amazing to stomp and see the yellow soak up immediately. The stomping is kind of fun, too." — K. Affeldt Get a pack of 20 from Amazon for $23.43 . 10. A miniature portable space heater to warm your frozen fingers and toes. It stands 10 inches tall and pumps out enough heat to warm a 300-square-foot room. It has three quiet fan settings, a bunch of different heat settings, a carrying handle, a cool-touch exterior, and overheat protection (for safety reasons!) Promising review: "Perfect quiet little heater. Exactly as described. My husband uses it daily and says this may be his favorite gift — ever. LOL. It's portable, gives off a good amount of heat, and it's nice and quiet. He uses it in the bathroom after a shower, under the desk while working from home , and anywhere else he needs warmth. He's been using it daily for about three months and loves it." — Amazon Customer Get it on Amazon for $31.44+ (available in two styles). 11. Or a 3-in-1 air purifier, heater, and fan if you're trying to heat a larger room. It silently filters the air, grabbing allergens, smoke, cooking odors, and more! And it looks so sleek and stylish that you won't mind it sitting out in the open. Promising review: "Everything you need in one product. I don’t have space in my apartment for multiple types of devices, so this was a great option for me. I’ve been very happy with it so far!" — Nancy Get it from Amazon for $299.99+ (available in two sizes). 12. Some outdoor faucet covers so you can help prevent a potentially costly situation involving frozen or burst pipes. Ouch! Promising review: "We bought these to cover our outdoor faucets in lieu of the styrofoam option. Read more about sunlamps and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) at Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic . Promising review: "I work from home at night. I never see the light of day during the winter. This light has been a joy to have and gives great light at my desk to work with with the benefit of mimicking sun exposure. It’s very easy to use and to replace bulbs." — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $49.99 (clip the $10 off coupon on the product page for this price). 14. A Levoit humidifier that'll add much-needed moisture to the dry winter air. Your hair, skin, and nasal passages will thank you! When I moved to NYC, the winters absolutely destroyed me, and I dealt with dry, flaky skin and constant nose bleeds. I knew I needed to get a humidifier, so I bought the first one I found on Amazon, and it was...fine...but I hated how hard it was to clean. So, I bought another humidifier. And then another humidifier. But every humidifier I bought was just soooo hard to clean. They all had nooks and crannies — or even unreachable surfaces — that got moldy fast and required a lot of contorting of my wrist to wipe down with a sponge. I also hated having to refill the water tank every day. So, I went searching for a humidifier that was easy to clean and had a big water tank. This bad boy ticks all the boxes for me, and the app features are fantastic. You can set the target humidity in a space, and the humidifier will run until it reaches the threshold, which it will then maintain. It also has schedule and timer features, but I don't use those since I work from home and have the humidifier running basically 24/7. There's even a plant identifier feature that will set the humidity at the optimal level for whatever plants you have. Get it from Amazon for $67.89+ (available in two colors). 15. And a genius humidifier tank cleaner because this fish-shaped cartridge swims around the water tank, inhibiting the growth of buildup for up to 30 days. Promising review: "Just drop this in your humidifier and it keeps the water pretty darn mildew and mold free. Super easy to use, no smell, and safe. I have already repurchased and given a few to other people as well." — Kristine Get it from Amazon for $5.98 . 16. A cleverly designed rechargeable electric candle lighter with a genius bendable neck to light just about anything without a struggle or stress about burning your fingers trying to light a slumped-over wick that's half buried in wax. (Just me??) This is especially great if you have mobility issues or arthritis, as it turns on with a simple switch. Promising reviews : "I absolutely love this product. Now I’m able to light candles where the candle wax has melted down, and it’s hard to reach inside the jar. I also love the fact that you charge this with a USB cable, and the charge lasts for a long time. It has indicator lights to let you know how much of a charge is remaining. I’ve only had to charge it once since I purchased it. I Very durable and a great value for the price. I definitely recommend this. " — Cassandra S. "Another product I got from TikTok. It’s a necessity. No more struggling and almost burning yourself. Stays charged for days. A week at most if you use it frequently." — Nijada Get it from Amazon for $15.99 (available in seven colors and two packs). 17. Or a flameless candle diffuser if you want the yummy, festive winter scents without the open flame. This cordless and waterless diffuser looks just like a real candle with a "flickering flame" that you blow out to extinguish. According to Johns Hopkins , you may want to avoid diffusing oils around larger groups and young children because of the side effects of different oils. You may also want to avoid using an oil diffuser around pets with breathing problems, according to the ASPCA . Promising review: "Rarely do I usually write reviews on Amazon, but I absolutely love this product. It is so awesome. It looks like a real candle, but you don’t have to worry about any fires. The smells that it comes with are great, and I even bought more because I plan on using it all the time. I got the light gree,n and I’m very happy with it." — Tracy A. Get it from Amazon for $29.99 . 18. A magnetic insulated door curtain so you can winterize your home and keep warm air where you want it. Reviewers have used this with great success in front of drafty doors — front doors, basement doors, garage doors, etc. Promising review: "I needed something to help with the amount of cold air that would come into the house every time our front door was opened. Winters in Alaska can be brutal, and our arctic entryway is not heated. Since I hung the thermal curtain, I have noticed a huge difference ! Perfect length, great material, super strong magnets...almost too strong. They close on their own every time. Would recommend." — Laroberts907 Get it from Amazon for $39.98+ (available in a variety of sizes and three colors). 19. And a door draft stopper for literally stopping the warm air from leaving the room. Bonus: It can help block noises and creepy-crawlies from slipping under the door. They're beautiful without too much light." — BJ Get 16 from Amazon for $33.99 (available in two colors and a pack of 20). 21. A jetted tub cleaner because snowy wintery nights are the perfect excuse for an evening soak. This cleans the inside of your tub — y'know, the part you can't reach — flushing out soap scum, body oils, and those black flakes that gunk up your tub's jets so you can relax in a clean tub. Promising review: "They don't call this Oh Yuk for no reason. I previously used Jacuzzi's two-part system, and this worked sooo much better. I was totally embarrassed not to mention grossed out at how much funk came out. It was NASTY! It definitely cleans your tub. You will probably have to clean the sides of your tub after it's finished because of how much stuff might come out. I swear I clean my tub on a regular basis, but I was amazed at how much better this worked. Highly recommend!" — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $17.84 . 22. Plus a bath overflow drain cover to enjoy a few extra inches of toasty water instead of sitting in water only up to your belly button and feeling scammed. Promising review: "I have a high-stress job, and I've started taking baths as a way to unwind. However, it never seemed like I could keep enough water in the tub to really enjoy it. This little thing makes a HUGE difference!! I get at least an extra three inches of water and it is great. " — Hyacinthe Snyder Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in nine colors). 23. Promising review: "Unbelievable! My daughter just moved into her first home. She thought she would have to paint her brick fireplace because of the heavy soot stains that had been there for years. We applied the product twice and put in a whole lot of elbow grease, but what a difference! It’s a messy process, but well worth the time and energy." — MM Get it from Amazon for $16.95 . 24. A Souper Cube — this silicone freezing tray stores perfectly portioned soups, stews, sauces, and more so you can whip up your fave soups, freeze 'em, and enjoy them the entire season instead of committing to the same soup for a week straight. Alex Enumah in Abuja The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria has reiterated its commitment towards improving the lives of indigent and vulnerable Nigerians, especially women and children. FIDA reiterated its commitment yesterday in Abuja, during a media parley to herald the federation’s triennial conference, tagged, ‘FIDA @ 60: Celebrating Our Legacy, Embracing the Future’. Speaking, the association’s Country Vice President/National President, Mrs. Amina Suzanah Agbaje, stated that, “FIDA Nigeria, 60 years ago, began with a bold vision to ensure access to justice for indigent women and children whilst championing the rights of the marginalised. “Through decades of dedication, passion, and resilience, we have grown into a formidable force within Nigeria’s legal landscape. Our story is one of triumphs, challenges, and undeniable impact, and as we look ahead, we remain even more committed to advancing the cause of justice.” Agbaje, claimed that in the last six decades, FIDA Nigeria has been working tirelessly to turn its vision into reality. “From securing landmark legislative victories to pushing for the domestication of international treaties that protect women and children, we’ve championed causes like the mitigation of gender-based violence, enhanced child protection, and the empowerment of women through legal education. We’ve continuously trained lawyers, provided free legal services to indigent women, and advocated for the passage of laws that promote gender parity and inclusion. “Today, as we mark this milestone, we are proud of the role we have played in shaping a more just and equitable society. As we celebrate, we are also conscious of the work that lies ahead. There is still much to be done, and FIDA Nigeria stands ready to continue leading the charge,” she said. The Country Vice President/National President disclosed that part of the activities slated for the triennial conference include; A 60 for 60 Outreach to empower indigent women who run small businesses with a profit lower than minimum wage; the grand unveiling of a National Shelter for survivors of gender-based violence—a testament to our unwavering dedication to supporting and empowering the vulnerable; aerobic sessions to promote physical and mental well-being among our members and legal education sessions to booster the knowledge and capacity of our members, amongst others. Highlight of the briefing was the unveiling of FIDA’s new logo—a fresh emblem that reflects both FIDA’s history and future aspirations. According to Agbaje, the new logo is more than just a symbol, “It represents FIDA Nigeria’s renewed commitment to innovation, leadership, and justice whilst reminding us that re-branding, re-inventing to remain relevant in an ever dynamic world is much needed for the evolution that we seek. “It honours our past, highlighting the foundation laid by trailblazing women who fought for equality in their time, and to keep the consciousness to further institutionalise an intergenerational organisation deliberate about mentorship and passing the torchlight to the younger, more vibrant, technology-driven generation of women who will lead in the revolution, landmark legislative reforms that will give women and children access to a fair and equitable justice, an opportunity in governance and leadership.”

Mumbai: Banks are unlikely to offer savers higher rates for fresh deposits as credit growth moderation and last week's cut in the cash reserve ratio (CRR) should ensure the lenders have sufficient liquidity to meet financing demand until the end of FY25. Bankers said slower credit growth has narrowed the gap between credit and deposits. Additionally, the ₹1.16-lakh-crore liquidity infusion through a lower CRR threshold will prevent deposit rates from climbing. Bankers said that deposit rates are now near their cyclical peak, and special deposit mobilisation schemes may not be revised at the end of this fiscal year. "One can safely say that deposit rates will be stable at current levels. They will be on hold with a downward bias. The liquidity infused via CRR will benefit all banks," said PR Rajagopal, executive director of Bank of India . "Each bank will, of course, take stock of rates in different buckets noting the demand for credit." Credit growth in the fortnight ending November 15 slowed to 11% year-on-year, while deposits climbed 11.21% YoY, central bank data showed. RBI data shows that outstanding deposits in the fortnight ending November 15 stood at ₹218.54 lakh crore, while outstanding credit stood at ₹173.62 lakh crore, with both credit and deposits falling slightly on an absolute basis versus the previous fortnight. Bankers said that although deposit rates are likely to have a downward bias, any reduction in rates will have to wait until the central bank reduces the benchmark repo rate . "Deposit rates will stay where they are. Banks will want to still make sure of the durability of liquidity and hence will not cut rates in a hurry," said Jaideep Iyer, head of strategy at RBL Bank . "The upward bias in deposit rates is probably over, but for rates to come down a definitive signal is awaited - like a cut in the repo rate." Banks have been launching special schemes to garner deposits for the past two months. State Bank of India (SBI) launched the Amrit Vrishti scheme offering 7.25% on fixed deposits for 444 days. The scheme is open until March 2025. Bankers said for them to cut deposit rates, a clear downward trend in inflation resulting in a lower repo rate is important. "Expectations are that agriculture output will improve from here on, which will cool food prices and bring inflation down. This could open the space for a cut in the repo rate, which may well be the signal for deposit rates to move downwards," said Sanjay Mudaliar, executive director of Bank of Baroda . The CRR cut has increased expectations of a repo rate cut in February. The monetary policy committee of the central bank will next announce its rate decision on February 7. (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel )Despite significant success, harm reduction measures still controversial in AfricaWASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump on Friday publicly expressed support of Pete Hesgeth, his embattled pick to lead the Pentagon, following Hesgeth’s whirlwind week of meetings with lawmakers, negative press and speculation that Trump could soon replace him. In a post on the Trump-owned Truth Social social media site, Trump said that Hegseth was doing well. “His support is strong and deep, much more so than the Fake News would have you believe. He was a great student – Princeton/Harvard educated – with a Military state of mind. He will be a fantastic, high energy, Secretary of Defense, one who leads with charisma and skill. Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Trump said. Hegseth had spent the past week in the Capitol, working to shore up support among Republican senators whose votes he will need to be confirmed next year, and to do damage control to combat a steady drip of negative press — including allegations of excessive drinking, sexual impropriety and mismanagement of funds at two veterans organizations, of which he was the head. As the allegations mounted, media reports citing unnamed sources said Trump was considering replacing Hegseth. Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former Pentagon official Elbridge Colby had all been floated as contenders for the top Defense Department job. In hallway interviews and a high-profile sit-down with Megyn Kelly, who like Hegseth is a former Fox News host, Hegseth said he was being “smeared” by the media. Republican senators have not openly opposed Hegseth — and many support him — but some have voiced concerns over the allegations. And Hegseth can afford to lose precious few votes given Republicans’ 53 Senate seats next year, assuming all Democrats oppose him. As scrutiny builds, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., wrote to Senate Armed Services Chairman Jack Reed, D-R.I., and ranking member Roger Wicker, R-Miss., urging them to ensure financial records from two nonprofit groups Hegseth used to lead are available for panel members to review. Blumenthal in his Wednesday letter made the case for demanding that the groups Vets for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America “preserve and produce” credit card records, tax filings, revenue reports and more from the time of Hegseth’s employment at both nonprofits. And Hegseth is expected to continue meeting with lawmakers next week, including key GOP moderates Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. Collins, currently the top Republican on the Defense Appropriations panel, told reporters Wednesday night that she has “a host of questions” for Hegseth, “ranging from his views on Ukraine and the size of our Navy to the allegations that have been lodged against him.” Ernst, a member of the Armed Services Committee with whom Hegseth met on Wednesday, pointedly declined to publicly endorse his selection, simply describing their meeting as a “frank and thorough conversation.” Speaking Thursday morning on Fox News, Ernst again did not signal support for Hegseth, and instead stressed the importance of the confirmation process. “I think for a number of our senators, they want to make sure that any allegations have been cleared, and that’s why we have to have a very thorough vetting process,” she said. Thus far, Hegseth has not met with any Senate Democrats, a decision Blumenthal criticized Thursday. Imperial Oil Ltd. stock rises Friday, still underperforms marketQatar tribune QNA Doha Momentum has returned to negotiations aimed at reaching a truce and exchanging hostages in the Gaza Strip after the US elections, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has said. Speaking at a dialogue session titled ‘Conflict Resolution in a New Era’, as part of the activities of the 22nd Doha Forum, the PM said that they felt after the US elections that momentum was returning to the path of negotiations and there is much encouragement from the next US administration to reach an agreement, even before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. He added that this prompted them to return to the path and put the negotiations back on track, noting that they resumed the negotiations in the past weeks. “There will be some differences in the approach of the administration of President Joe Biden and that of President Trump to certain issues and matters. This approach affects the decisions taken and what happens on the ground. However, we have not noticed any differences or rejection by the new administration regarding the main goal, which is to end the war in Gaza,” he said. While referring to many fluctuations that the negotiations have witnessed since the beginning of the war, the prime minister said a deal was reached on November 23, 2023, under which 109 Israeli hostages and 15 foreign hostages were released in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners. “Since then, the same process and the same framework have continued. Discussions within this framework have continued until today,” he said. He added that they went through several stages during the negotiation process, in which this process was exploited for political reasons by one party or another, and they went through a lot of scrutiny and examination because one party or another tried to score political points. Sheikh Mohammed pointed out that the momentum of the negotiations had slackened significantly in the last days before the US elections in particular, and they did not feel a real will or readiness to reach a conclusion to the events that were sweeping the Strip. “At that moment, Qatar decided to take a step back similar to what it did last April to see if there was a possibility of regaining this momentum.” The PM stressed that this issue affects many people, whether the residents of Gaza or the families of the hostages. Unfortunately, and given the way things were managed during this year and the exposure of all these details to the public, raising the level of hope among these innocent people had negative effects because we felt frustrated every time as a result of these disappointments. “That’s why we’re focused on achieving meaningful results, and what we expect and hope for is that we reach results as soon as possible,” he said, adding that all parties have a real will to deal with things in good faith. The prime minister pointed out that the gaps and points of difference between Hamas and Israel are not big and are not of a magnitude that would affect the negotiations. He added, “The question is simple: Is there a will to end the war? Yes or no? And is there a will to reach an exchange deal? Yes or no? Two simple questions and two simple answers.” Regarding the developments in Syria, Sheikh Mohammed said that there were two main factors related to what is taking place today in Syria. The first factor was expected given the current events in Gaza, noting that Qatar warned against the expansion of the conflict and the consequences of the war in Gaza on the entire region. He added that they have noticed the expansion of this situation and the extension of this conflict, whether to Lebanon, the Red Sea, or other areas within the Middle East, expressing belief that it is wrong to consider that Syria is immune to this conflict. He explained that the second factor is related to ignoring the situation in Syria, adding that there was a golden opportunity during the period when the fighting calmed down but this opportunity was not seized, for Bashar Al Assad to begin correcting his relationship with his people. The PM said everyone in the world was surprised by the events witnessed in the past few days, and surprised by the speed of progress achieved by the opposition in Syria. “This situation may develop and its danger may increase,” he added, expressing concern about the escalation of the situation and the return of internal violence and civil war that threaten the territorial integrity of the Syrian state. He said that the current situation could undoubtedly destroy what remains of Syria, unless all parties act responsibly and quickly to establish the necessary framework to address this issue politically and reach a sustainable solution. He said Qatar’s role is to ensure the stability of the region and that of its own, for which it needs to deal with all sides, work for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and ensure a better future for the region. Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, has seen his fortune soar to an unprecedented $347.8 billion following a dramatic post-election rally in Tesla’s share price. The surge, reported by the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, surpasses Musk’s previous net worth record of $340 billion set in November 2021, further placing his position atop the billionaire rankings. Tesla’s stock has been on an upswing since the November 5 election, gaining 40% amid investor optimism about Musk’s perceived influence in the incoming Trump administration. It’s been a long road back to the highest levels of motorsport for Canadian driver Robert Wickens. Six years after he was paralyzed in a violent wreck, Wickens will again be behind the wheel against some of the best drivers in North America. Wickens, from Guelph, Ont., was named the newest driver for DXDT Racing earlier this week, moving the 35-year-old up to IMSA GTD competition for 2025, the highest class on the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series. His promotion was made possible by a new hand control braking system created by Bosch Electronics, with help from GM Motorsports and Corvette Racing/Pratt Miller. “It’s not going to be easy but I wanted to get to the highest levels of motorsport again because, frankly, that’s where I was when I was injured,” said Wickens, who crashed at Pocono Raceway in 2018 during IndyCar’s ABC Supply 500. “But not only that, I want to prove to myself and other generations of people with disabilities that you can really do anything. “Maybe you’re having a hard time getting back to your place of work after a life-altering accident and — whatever your discipline, it doesn’t even have to be athletics — but I know it’s possible as long as you align yourself with a strong support system.” For Wickens, that’s been his wife Karli Wickens, his family and, in his professional life, organizations like Bosch and GM. Wickens’s crash left him with a thoracic spinal fracture, a neck fracture, tibia and fibula fractures to both legs, fractures in both hands, a fractured right forearm, a fractured elbow, four fractured ribs, a pulmonary contusion, and an indeterminate spinal injury that combined to make him a paraplegic. As he has slowly recovered some movement in his legs, Wickens has eased back into motor racing. He drove the parade lap of the 2019 Honda Indy Toronto, competed in the IndyCar iRacing Challenge during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and then in January 2022 it was announced he would drive in the Michelin Pilot Challenge for Bryan Herta Autosport. He and co-driver Mark Wilkins won twice in the Michelin Pilot Challenge’s TCR category with three podiums in 2022. In 2023 the pairing didn’t win, but they reached the podium seven times to earn the TCR championship. All of Wickens’s post-accident cars have been fitted with hand controls. Those conventional systems rely on paddles around the steering wheel that activate pneumatics that then press the foot pedals. Hand controls like that are acceptable for regular road vehicles and even lower levels of motorsports but in the highest classes, like IMSA GTD where cars top out at more than 280 kilometres, the lag between the driver toggling the paddle and the car responding is unacceptably slow. That’s where the Bosch electronic system comes in, with the controls linked directly to the car’s braking system, removing the pneumatics as an intermediary. “When you hit the brakes to slow the car down for each corner that was always a big challenge for me where (with) the Bosch electronic system, the latency is milliseconds not tenths of a second,” said Wickens. “It’s basically as accurate as I would be if I was an able-bodied driver wanting to apply the brake. “Honestly, it’s just better in every facet imaginable. It’s just been a true blessing.” Advances in physical rehabilitation from spinal cord injuries as well as the ongoing development of vehicle technology has made Wickens’s return to competitive motorsport possible. “I’m very fortunate in the timing of my paralysis and my career,” Wickens said Wednesday from Tampa, Fla. “If this was even a decade ago we’d be having a very different conversation today.” The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship has four classes of vehicles: two sports prototype categories and two grand tourer classes. GTD is considered the highest of the four classes because each team must have at least a silver or bronze driver and more than one platinum-rated driver on a team is prohibited. “I want to win,” said Wickens. “I think the big thing for me on this journey back was I wanted to race again because I truly felt like I could still win. “I want to raise awareness for spinal cord injury and disability, not by just being a participant, but by being the guy. I want to win races, fight for podiums, win championships, every time I’m sitting in the car.” Wickens said he won’t just be a role model for people living with paralysis or other mobility disabilities, but the technology his car will employ in 2025 will likely become commercially available for use in road vehicles. “Motorsports and the automotive racing industry were founded to be a proving ground for everyday automotive vehicles,” he said. “From there you make road cars and road safety better. “Hopefully we can provide the technology and have regularly available components that can make any race car accessible for anyone that needs hand controls or any other form of disability.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 27, 2024. Experts say it’s unprecedentedThe Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Zone C Executive Council, has urged members to comply with the two-week strike following an industrial disagreement with the Federal Government. The union’s Zonal Coordinator, Mr Adekunle Masopa made this known during a media conference at Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) in Lagos on Friday. Recall that the resolution of the Union’s 111th NEC was the issuance of a 15-day ultimatum to the government. It urged the government to address issues threatening the progress of the sector or face a withdrawal of services by members nationwide. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the union plans to begin the industrial action on Monday to press their demands. Masopa reiterated the resolution of NEC to all chapters and members across the zone, charging them to down tools, while the chapter executive were mandated to ensure compliance. READ ALSO : Labour begins nationwide strike, cites empty promises by governors The zonal coordinator said members would call off the two weeks strike and resume lectures on Dec. 16. Masopa listed the reasons for the strike to include minimum wage, CONTISS 15 migration and delay in promotion exercises. “Our demands also include non-payment of promotion benefits, inadequate staffing and appointment of Principal officers in Acting capacity beyond the provisions of the Edicts for the institutions. “There is also undue delay by the regulatory body for the Polytechnic sector, NBTE, on review of the suspended contentious document titled Schemes of Service for Polytechnics,” he said. Masopa said the non-conclusion of the ASUP/FG 2010 agreement renegotiation process and the non-release of promotion arrears in federal institutions were among their grievances. The zonal coordinator said there was violation of the provisions of the Federal Polytechnics Act (as amended 2019) in the appointment of a new rector in Federal Polytechnic Nekede. He said there were clear cases of irregularities in application of the Federal Polytechnic Act, Edicts and other instruments of governance.

NonePresident-elect Donald Trump arrives to speak at a meeting of the House GOP conference, followed by Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., last week in Washington. Alex Brandon/Associated Press NEW YORK — A number of President-elect Donald Trump ‘s most prominent Cabinet picks and appointees have been targeted by bomb threats and “swatting attacks,” Trump’s transition team said Wednesday. The FBI said it was investigating. “Last night and this morning, several of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them,” Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. She said the attacks ranged from bomb threats to swatting, in which attackers initiate an emergency law enforcement response against a target victim under false pretenses. The tactic has become a popular one in recent years. Leavitt said law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted and Trump and his transition team are grateful. Among those targeted were New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick to serve as the next ambassador to the United Nations; Matt Gaetz, Trump’s initial pick to serve as attorney general; and former New York congressman Lee Zeldin, who has been tapped to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Law enforcement officials are also looking into whether Susie Wiles, Trump’s incoming chief of staff, and Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general whom Trump has chosen as Gaetz’s replacement, and other incoming administration officials were also victims – as well as how each was targeted, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity as the investigation continues. Wiles and Bondi did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The FBI said in a statement that it was “aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees” and was investigating with its law enforcement partners. The FBI added: “We take all potential threats seriously, and as always, encourage members of the public to immediately report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement.” A pipe bomb threat targeting me and my family at our home today was sent in with a pro-Palestinian themed message. My family and I were not home at the time and are safe. We are working with law enforcement to learn more as this situation develops. We are thankful for the swift... — Lee Zeldin (@LeeMZeldin) November 27, 2024 White House spokesperson Saloni Sharma said President Biden had been briefed and the White House is in touch with federal law enforcement and Trump’s transition team. Biden “continues to monitor the situation closely,” Sharma said, adding the president and his administration “condemn threats of political violence.” Stefanik’s office said that, on Wednesday morning, she, her husband, and their 3-year-old son were driving home from Washington for Thanksgiving when they were informed of a bomb threat to their residence in Saratoga County. Her office said “New York State, County law enforcement, and U.S. Capitol Police responded immediately with the highest levels of professionalism.” The New York State Police said a team was dispatched to sweep Stefanik’s home on Wednesday morning in response to the bomb threat but did not locate any explosive devices. The agency directed further questions to the FBI. Zeldin said in a social media post that he and his family had been threatened. “A pipe bomb threat targeting me and my family at our home today was sent in with a pro-Palestinian themed message,” he wrote on X . “My family and I were not home at the time and are safe. We are working with law enforcement to learn more as this situation develops.” Police in Suffolk County, Long Island, said emergency officers responded to a bomb threat Wednesday morning at an address listed in public records as Zeldin’s home and were checking the property. In Florida, the Okaloosa County sheriff’s office said on Facebook that it “received notification of a bomb threat referencing former Congressman Matt Gaetz’s supposed mailbox at a home in the Niceville area” around 9 a.m. Wednesday. While a family member resides at the address, the office said, Gaetz “is NOT a resident.” No threatening devices were found. Gaetz was Trump’s initial pick to serve as attorney general, but he withdrew from consideration after allegations that he paid women for sex and slept with underage women. Gaetz has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and said last year that a Justice Department investigation into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls had ended with no federal charges against him. The threats follow a political campaign marked by disturbing and unprecedented violence. In July, a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing the then-candidate in the ear with a bullet and killing one of his supporters. The Secret Service later thwarted a subsequent assassination attempt at Trump’s West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course when an agent spotted the barrel of a gun poking through a perimeter fence while Trump was golfing. Trump was also the subject of an Iranian murder-for-hire plot, with a man saying he had been tasked with planning the assassination of the Republican president-elect. Also this week, authorities arrested a man they say posted videos on social media threatening to kill Trump, according to court documents. In one video posted on Nov. 13, Manuel Tamayo-Torres threatened to shoot the former president while holding what appeared to be an AR-15 style rifle, authorities said Among the other videos he posted was one from an arena in Glendale, Arizona on Aug. 23, the same day Trump held a campaign rally there, according to court papers. An attorney for Tamayo-Torres did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Public figures across the political spectrum have been targeted in recent years by hoax bomb threats and false reports of shootings at their homes. About a year ago the FBI responded to an uptick in such incidents at the homes of public officials, state capitols and courthouses across the country around the holidays. Many were locked down and evacuated in early January after receiving bomb threats. No explosives were found and no one was hurt. Some of those targeted last year were Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. This year, there was not just one but TWO assassination attempts on President Trump. Now some of his Cabinet nominees and their families are facing bomb threats. This is dangerous and unhinged. It is not who we are in America. Joe Biden and all Democrat leaders have an... https://t.co/0xZztX4DQo — Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) November 27, 2024 In Wu’s case, a male caller told police he had shot his own wife and tied another man up. When police and EMT responders arrived at the address given by the caller, they quickly realized it was the Boston mayor’s home. Wu, a Democrat, has also been targeted by many swatting calls since she took office in 2021. The judges overseeing the civil fraud case against Trump in New York and the criminal election interference case against him in Washington were both targeted earlier this year. Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, who recently abandoned the two criminal cases he brought against Trump, was also the subject of a fake emergency call on Christmas Day last year. Earlier this year, schools, government buildings and the homes of city officials in Springfield, Ohio, received a string of hoax bomb threats after Trump falsely accused members of Springfield’s Haitian community of abducting and eating cats and dogs. And in 2022, a slew of historically Black colleges and universities nationwide were targeted with dozens of bomb threats, with the vast majority arriving during the celebration of Black History Month. The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement Wednesday that anytime a member of Congress is the victim of a swatting’ incident, “we work closely with our local and federal law enforcement partners.” The force declined to provide further details, in part to “minimize the risk of copy-cats.” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson called the threats “dangerous and unhinged.” “This year, there was not just one but TWO assassination attempts on President Trump,” he wrote on X . “Now some of his Cabinet nominees and their families are facing bomb threats.” He added: “It is not who we are in America.” Associated Press writers Colleen Long and Eric Tucker in Washington, Scott Bauer in Madison, Wisconsin, and Anthony Izaguirre in Albany, New York, contributed to this report. Opposition home affairs spokesman James Paterson told Sky News Australia Anthony Albanese has an opportunity to intervene and return the port to Australian hands. “The Port of Darwin is a piece of critical infrastructure it should not be in the hands of a potential strategic adversary,” Mr Paterson told First Edition host Pete Stefanovic. “This is an opportunity to rectify that and the Albanese Government cannot squander that opportunity.” Senator Paterson’s comments follow revelations by Sky News that the port’s operator Landbridge Infrastructure Australia had posted a $34 million loss last financial year and was reliant on its parent company the Shandong Landbridge Group for its ongoing viability. But a directors’ report submitted this month to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission says the parent company is also facing financial issues as it tries to restructure its debt, including a $107 million bond that is overdue and in default. If these issues can’t be resolved, a third party could be brought in to force the sale of the lease to another company, or the Northern Territory Government could terminate the lease. Senator Paterson said the revelations about Landbridge’s financial issues “present an opportunity that wasn’t available previously”. “Previously the advice was that you would have to compensate Landbridge with very significant compensation if you were to cancel the lease, but if Landbridge itself is in such financial difficulty that it voids the terms of the lease itself, then that lease can be cancelled without penalty, and that is exactly what should happen, and the Foreign Investment Review Board should make sure that it does not again go into the hands of a potential strategic adversary,” he said. The former Giles Country Liberal Party’s decision to lease to the port to Landbridge for 99 years in 2015 caused shockwaves all the way to Washington. Former US President Barack Obama raised his concerns about the lease directly with then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, famously telling him to “next time let me know”, after the Americans were blind-sided by the deal. At the time the Foreign Investment Review Board determined it had no authority to examine the deal. Senator Paterson said the laws had since been changed. “The Foreign Investment Review Board now has more powers than it ever has and the security of critical infrastructure act gives the minister for home affairs extraordinary powers when it comes to critical infrastructure like the Port of Darwin,” he said. “The Albanese Government must act decisively to make sure that the Port of Darwin is returned to Australian hands or at least put in the hands of a company that doesn’t pose a national security risk to Australia.”
