Real vs. fake: Can you spot AI-generated images? If you’ve been wondering when you’d hear the name Thom E. Gemcity again on NCIS , you’re in luck! McGee’s ( Sean Murray ) pen name will be “resurrected” in the December 16 Christmas episode. “We’re going to tease a forthcoming third Deep Six novel from McGee,” executive producer Steven D. Binder tells TV Insider. In “Humbug,” when a shocking tell-all threatens to ruin Christmas for a decorated Marine, the team must uncover the truth and deliver a holiday miracle—before the book hits shelves and turns a hero’s legacy into a holiday disaster. “It’s going to be a pretty heartfelt holiday story involving wounded veterans,” says the EP. LaRoche ( Seamus Dever ), the man who took the job McGee wanted in the Season 22 premiere (Deputy Director), is back for this episode. McGee has thought something’s been off about the guy since. “This is where McGee really becomes suspicious of LaRoche’s motives. He’s going to be assigned to the team to work with them for a little while,” teases Binder. Parker's Visions of Lily Are Getting Dangerous on 'NCIS' Brian Dietzen previously told us of this next episode , “Like our [previous] Christmas episodes, it is holiday-themed, it’s wrapped up. This is one where you can watch it and go, ‘Oh, that’s kind of the NCIS Christmas tradition is that you get to watch a show that has a beginning, middle, and end, and then you’re off to your holidays after that.'” He also confirmed there won’t be any mistletoe lying around to make things awkward for Dr. Palmer and his ex-girlfriend Knight ( Katrina Law ). “No, not in this one. I don’t think so,” he said with a laugh. What are you hoping to see in the Christmas episode this season? Let us know in the comments section below. Adams replaced Antonio Sanabria in the 64th minute and made his mark almost immediately. With 70 gone, he spotted the Empoli goalkeeper off his line and lobbed the ball over his head from inside the center circle. The goal ended his personal eight-game drought in spectacular fashion, and will ease pressure on coach Paolo Vanoli. The Turin club was unbeaten in its first five league games and topped the table for a time. But it has won only one of 10 games since, back in late October. Friday's win lifted Torino into 12th place, two places and three points behind Empoli. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer
BEIRUT — Israel's military launched airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday, unleashing explosions throughout the country and killing at least 31 while Israeli leaders appeared to be closing in on a negotiated ceasefire with the Hezbollah militant group. Israeli strikes hit commercial and residential buildings in Beirut as well as in the port city of Tyre. Military officials claimed they targeted areas known as Hezbollah strongholds. They issued evacuation orders for Beirut's southern suburbs, and strikes landed across the city, including meters from a Lebanese police base and the city's largest public park. The barrage came as officials indicated they were nearing agreement on a ceasefire, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Security Cabinet prepared to discuss an offer on the table. Bulldozers remove the rubble of a destroyed building Monday that was hit in an Israeli airstrike in Dahiyeh, in the southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. Foreign ministers from the world’s leading industrialized nations also expressed cautious optimism Monday about possible progress on a ceasefire. “Knock on wood,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said as he opened the Group of Seven meeting outside Rome. “We are perhaps close to a ceasefire in Lebanon," he said. "Let's hope it's true and that there's no backing down at the last-minute.” A ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon was foremost on the agenda of the G7 meeting in Fiuggi, outside Rome, that gathered ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, in the last G7 encounter of the Biden administration. For the first time, the G7 ministers were joined by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as the Secretary General of the Arab League. Thick smoke, flames and debris erupt Monday from an Israeli airstrike that targeted a building in Tayouneh, Beirut, Lebanon. Meanwhile, massive explosions lit up Lebanon's skies with flashes of orange, sending towering plumes of smoke into the air as Israeli airstrikes pounded Beirut's southern suburbs Monday. The blasts damaged buildings and left shattered glass and debris scattered across nearby streets. Some of the strikes landed close to central Beirut and near Christian neighborhoods and other targets where Israel issued evacuation warnings, including in Tyre and Nabatiyeh province. Israeli airstrikes also hit the northeast Baalbek-Hermel region without warning. Lebanon's Health Ministry said Monday that 26 people were killed in southern Lebanon, four in the eastern Baalbek-Hermel province and one in Choueifat, a neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs that was not subjected to evacuation warnings on Monday. The deaths brought the total toll to 3,768 killed in Lebanon throughout 13 months of war between Israel and Hezbollah and nearly two months since Israel launched its ground invasion. Many of those killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hezbollah have been civilians, and health officials said some of the recovered bodies were so severely damaged that DNA testing would be required to confirm their identities. Israel claims to have killed more than 2,000 Hezbollah members. Lebanon's Health Ministry says the war has displaced 1.2 million people. Destroyed buildings stand Monday in the area of a village in southern Lebanon as seen from northern Israel. Israeli ground forces invaded southern Lebanon in early October, meeting heavy resistance in a narrow strip of land along the border. The military previously exchanged attacks across the border with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group that began firing rockets into Israel the day after the war in Gaza began last year. Lebanese politicians have decried the ongoing airstrikes and said they are impeding ceasefire negotiations. The country's deputy parliament speaker accused Israel of ramping up its bombardment to pressure Lebanon to make concessions in indirect ceasefire negotiations with Hezbollah. Elias Bousaab, an ally of the militant group, said Monday that the pressure has increased because "we are close to the hour that is decisive regarding reaching a ceasefire." Israeli officials voiced similar optimism Monday about prospects for a ceasefire. Mike Herzog, the country's ambassador to Washington, earlier in the day told Israeli Army Radio that several points had yet to be finalized. Though any deal would require agreement from the government, Herzog said Israel and Hezbollah were "close to a deal." "It can happen within days," he said. Israeli officials have said the sides are close to an agreement that would include withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and a pullback of Hezbollah fighters from the Israeli border. But several sticking points remain. A member of the Israeli security forces inspects an impact site Sunday after a rocket fired from Lebanon hit an area in Rinatya, outskirts of Tel Aviv, Israel. After previous hopes for a ceasefire were dashed, U.S. officials cautioned that negotiations were not yet complete and noted that there could be last-minute hitches that either delay or destroy an agreement. "Nothing is done until everything is done," White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Monday. The proposal under discussion to end the fighting calls for an initial two-month ceasefire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. The withdrawals would be accompanied by an influx of thousands more Lebanese army troops, who have been largely sidelined in the war, to patrol the border area along with an existing U.N. peacekeeping force. Western diplomats and Israeli officials said Israel demands the right to strike in Lebanon if it believes Hezbollah is violating the terms. The Lebanese government says such an arrangement would authorize violations of the country's sovereignty. On paper, being more sustainable and eco-friendly while shopping sounds great—so why don't more people do it? There is growing consumer consciousness about the environmental impact of where people choose to shop and the sustainability of the products they buy. According to McKinsey, over 60% of individuals surveyed in 2020 said they would be that is packaged in an eco-friendly way. Since 2019, products marketed as being environmentally sustainable have seen a compared to 20% for products with no such marketing, a 2023 McKinsey and NielsenIQ report found. Much of this is thanks to the preferences and attitudes of Gen Z, who, on average, care more than their older counterparts about being informed shoppers. The younger generation also has more social justice and environmental awareness altogether. Shoppers are on a product they know is sourced or manufactured sustainably, with 46% saying they would do so explicitly because they want to reduce their environmental footprint, according to a 2024 PwC report. Sustainable practices consumers look for from companies include production methods, packaging, and water conservation. But despite the growing consciousness around being more environmentally responsible, consumer actions don't always align with their values. In psychology, this is defined as the "say-do gap": the phenomenon wherein people openly express concern and intention around an issue, but fail to take tangible action to make a change. According to the Harvard Business Review in 2019, most consumers (65%) say they want to buy from brands that promote sustainability, but only 1 in 4 follow through. So why don't people actually shop sustainably, despite how much they express a preference for eco-friendly products—and how can we close the gap? examined reports from the and other sources to explore why some shoppers want to buy sustainably but struggle to follow through. This lack of action isn't due to a lack of caring—in many cases, it's hard to know how to be a sustainable consumer and other factors are often outside of shoppers' control. But the more people shop sustainably, the easier and more accessible that market will be for everyone—making it much easier for folks to buy aligned with their values. There are many obstacles preventing shoppers from upholding eco-friendly habits as much as they may want to—but not all of these barriers are necessarily real, or accurately understood. Shopping sustainably simply isn't convenient or accessible for many. Those who live in apartment buildings are , according to Ipsos. Reasons for this can vary from lack of space to buildings being excluded altogether because of recycling contamination issues. Many believe that sustainable products are too expensive or of a lower quality. The former is often true, which does create a hurdle for many: The manufacturing processes and materials for sustainable products are pricey. For instance, organic cotton requires an intensive production process free of certain chemicals or pesticides; by definition, true eco-friendly products can't be mass-produced, further upping their price tag. Using recycled materials for packaging, or obtaining an eco certification, can also be expensive. However, although the narrative of eco-friendly products being more expensive is true, there is often more of an effort to use better quality materials that last longer than their noneco-friendly counterparts. This could end up saving consumers money in the long run: By paying more upfront, they can get more wear out of sustainable fashion, for instance. There is also undeniable political rhetoric surrounding eco-friendly products—however, despite many Conservative politicians decrying sustainable products, members of all generations are increasingly choosing to prioritize shopping sustainably regardless of their political affiliation, according to research from . This finding shows a trend toward seeing sustainability as a nonpartisan subject everyone can benefit from, no matter where they lie on the political spectrum. Some might think eco-friendly clothing, in particular, is not fashion-forward; after all, many of the top clothing retailers in the world partake in fast fashion. However, brands are increasingly being recognized as 'cool' and 'trendy' for supporting environmentally ethical practices, particularly as younger generations prioritize sustainability, as noted before. Many increasingly popular online stores are taking advantage of this paradigm shift by offering secondhand shopping options that are not only fashionable, but also more affordable, like ThredUp or Poshmark. Additionally, many legacy large-name brands are hopping on the sustainability movement and are gaining appreciation from loyal customers. Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly program partners with third-party certification bodies to make it easier for shoppers to identify eco-friendly products as they browse the website. H&M's newly launched H&M Rewear program debuts a resale platform that allows the resale of all clothing brands—not just their own. Similarly, Patagonia's Worn Wear program allows shoppers to trade in and buy used gear and clothing. The federal government is also working to close this gap. The Environmental Protection Agency's is attempting to make sustainable shopping easier for consumers and companies alike. It includes a directory of certified products, a list of safer chemicals to look out for on labels, a "Safer Choice" label that products can earn to denote they are eco-friendly, and resources for manufacturers looking to adopt more sustainable practices. Most of all, though, the biggest way shoppers can shift toward sustainable shopping is through their behaviors and attitudes amongst their peers and communities. Studies show that humans largely care what others think of their actions; the more shoppers make environmentally conscious shopping the norm, the more others will follow suit. From an economic perspective, the more consumers shop eco-friendly, the more affordable and accessible these products will become, too: Sustainable products are currently more expensive because they are not in high demand. Once demand rises, production rates and prices can lower, making these products more accessible for all. NoneNovak Djokovic says his rivalry with Andy Murray has “one final chapter” after his long-time adversary joined him as his coach for the upcoming Australian Open. Murray – Britain’s greatest ever player – retired after this summer’s Olympics at the age of 37 after finally admitting defeat in his battle against his body. Many in the game expected the Scot would one day return to tennis and become a coach, particularly due to his love of the sport, hard work and his tactical acumen. He never liked retirement anyway. 🙌 pic.twitter.com/Ga4UlV2kQW — Novak Djokovic (@DjokerNole) November 23, 2024 But it came with some degree of shock on Saturday afternoon when a social media post from Djokovic, playing on Murray’s light-hearted tweet upon his departure, read: “He never liked retirement anyway”. The attached video announced Murray, who he lost to in two Slam finals but beat in four Australian showpieces, would coach him over the winter and through January’s Open in Melbourne. “We played each other since we were boys, 25 years of pushing each other to our limits. We had some of the most epic battles in in our sport. They called us gamechangers, risk-takers, history-makers,” Djokovic said. “I thought our story may be over. Turns out it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner. Welcome aboard, coach Andy Murray.” Murray, who beat Djokovic to win the US Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013, says he wants to help the 24-time grand slam champion achieve his goals. “I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the off-season, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open, he said. “I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals.” Djokovic, a week younger than his new coach, added: “I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my coach. “Looking forward to the start of the season and competing in Australia alongside Andy with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on the Australian soil.” Djokovic beat Murray in the 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016 Australian Open finals as well as the French Open final in 2016. It was after he unseated Djokovic at the top of the rankings in 2016 that Murray suffered the hip injury which ultimately derailed his career. Since his retirement, Murray has been playing golf with the same dedication he pursued his tennis but will now return to his natural habitat. Djokovic, who split with coach Goran Ivanisevic earlier this year, hopes that adding Murray to his team will help him get back to the top of the game after he went through a calendar year without winning a grand slam for the first time since 2017. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have developed a stranglehold at the top of the men’s game and Djokovic, who has seen Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all retire in recent years, is still hoping to move clear of the record 24 grand slams he shares with Margaret Court.

By MICHAEL R. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. They include freezing the case until Trump leaves office in 2029, agreeing that any future sentence won’t include jail time, or closing the case by noting he was convicted but that he wasn’t sentenced and his appeal wasn’t resolved because of presidential immunity. Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove reiterated Friday their position that the only acceptable option is overturning his conviction and dismissing his indictment, writing that anything less will interfere with the transition process and his ability to lead the country. The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined comment. It’s unclear how soon Merchan will decide. He could grant Trump’s request for dismissal, go with one of the prosecution’s suggestions, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court, or choose some other option. In their response Friday, Blanche and Bove ripped each of the prosecution’s suggestions. Halting the case until Trump leaves office would force the incoming president to govern while facing the “ongoing threat” that he’ll be sentenced to imprisonment, fines or other punishment as soon as his term ends, Blanche and Bove wrote. Trump, a Republican, takes office Jan. 20. “To be clear, President Trump will never deviate from the public interest in response to these thuggish tactics,” the defense lawyers wrote. “However, the threat itself is unconstitutional.” The prosecution’s suggestion that Merchan could mitigate those concerns by promising not to sentence Trump to jail time on presidential immunity grounds is also a non-starter, Blanche and Bove wrote. The immunity statute requires dropping the case, not merely limiting sentencing options, they argued. Blanche and Bove, both of whom Trump has tabbed for high-ranking Justice Department positions, expressed outrage at the prosecution’s novel suggestion that Merchan borrow from Alabama and other states and treat the case as if Trump had died. Blanche and Bove accused prosecutors of ignoring New York precedent and attempting to “fabricate” a solution “based on an extremely troubling and irresponsible analogy between President Trump” who survived assassination attempts in Pennsylvania in July and Florida in September “and a hypothetical dead defendant.” Such an option normally comes into play when a defendant dies after being convicted but before appeals are exhausted. It is unclear whether it is viable under New York law, but prosecutors suggested that Merchan could innovate in what’s already a unique case. “This remedy would prevent defendant from being burdened during his presidency by an ongoing criminal proceeding,” prosecutors wrote in their filing this week. But at the same time, it wouldn’t “precipitously discard” the “meaningful fact that defendant was indicted and found guilty by a jury of his peers.” Prosecutors acknowledged that “presidential immunity requires accommodation” during Trump’s impending return to the White House but argued that his election to a second term should not upend the jury’s verdict, which came when he was out of office. Longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution . Other world leaders don’t enjoy the same protection. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on trial on corruption charges even as he leads that nation’s wars in Lebanon and Gaza . Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his May 30 conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records . Prosecutors said he fudged the documents to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier, which Trump denies. In their filing Friday, Trump’s lawyers citing a social media post in which Sen. John Fetterman used profane language to criticize Trump’s hush money prosecution. The Pennsylvania Democrat suggested that Trump deserved a pardon, comparing his case to that of President Joe Biden’s pardoned son Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . “Weaponizing the judiciary for blatant, partisan gain diminishes the collective faith in our institutions and sows further division,” Fetterman wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. Trump’s hush money conviction was in state court, meaning a presidential pardon — issued by Biden or himself when he takes office — would not apply to the case. Presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes. Since the election, special counsel Jack Smith has ended his two federal cases , which pertained to Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and allegations that he hoarded classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. A separate state election interference case in Fulton County, Georgia, is largely on hold. Trump denies wrongdoing in all. Trump had been scheduled for sentencing in the hush money case in late November. But following Trump’s Nov. 5 election victory, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed the former and future president’s sentencing so the defense and prosecution could weigh in on the future of the case. Merchan also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. A dismissal would erase Trump’s conviction, sparing him the cloud of a criminal record and possible prison sentence. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office.

Maybe you've locked eyes with someone at a party or sat next to someone in a class and wondered, "What if?" Blame it on the prevalence of rom-coms while our brains were developing or the human desire to find "The One," but there's something about meet-cutes that we can't get enough of — especially when they happen IRL... So, when Redditor Dense_Reflection_791 recently asked the r/AskWomen community, " How did you find your partner? " I knew I had to share some of the most heart-meltingly wholesome responses. From standing outside during a thunderstorm to playing Dungeons and Dragons, here are 17 of the most adorable ways women met their significant others: 1. "It was weird. I was done with dating and trying to meet someone, so I began researching sperm banks to start my journey as a single mother by choice. And then Covid hit..." "During the middle of the pandemic, he was working from home. One day, he clocked out early and decided to go for a walk and sit on a bench. My job was closed down, so I decided to go for a walk. I don’t like most people, but for some reason, I decided to sit down on the bench he was already sitting on. I took out my phone to play a game, and somehow, we started talking. Before I realized it, we had been talking for over an hour. I eventually had to leave, but before I could go, he asked for my number. I had so much fun in our conversation that I gave it to him. He called me a few hours later to ask me out on a date for the next day. He said he didn’t want to give me a chance to change my mind about him. So I agreed. "He was trying to be a wingman for his buddy at an Oktoberfest a couple hours away from where I lived and asked if I would dance with his friend." "But...his friend got shy and didn't want to dance anymore, so he danced with me instead. We hit it off and talked the whole time. Later that night, he asked for my number. We discovered that we only lived 15 minutes away from each other. The rest is history. We dated for four years and have been married for another four and a half." — u/jaelythe4781 6. "We met at an art fair. He owned a small furniture and design shop and was one of the exhibitors. His booth was at the front door, so when I walked in, he was sitting in a chair facing me." "We both stared at each other. Not in a flirty or sexy way, more like 'deer in headlights.' After walking around the whole fair, I returned to talk to him. He showed me a really wild helmet he had made that looked like a melon. I tried it on, and he took a picture of me and then asked for my number to text the pic to me. He still thinks he was sooo smooth for that, haha." — u/rat_cheese_token 7. "I was the designated driver for my (ex) best friend's 21st birthday! My now-partner didn’t have a ride that night, so I, my ex-BFF, and one other person drove over and picked him up at his place." "My ex-BFF told me that my now-partner liked to 'smoke' before parties, so I was also under the impression he was blasted when we picked him up (he was totally sober, though.) I put on a few songs on the way to the party. Before he got out of the car, I played 'Downfall of Us All' by A Day to Remember. He exclaimed that he loved that song! While walking into the house, we immediately launched into a deep conversation about our favorite bands. That is when we both found out that we LOVED the band Beartooth and talked about how amazing it is to find another person in the wild who knew and loved them. While everyone else at the party got wasted, we talked and bounced balloons back and forth through the night. So the next week, his best friend had a birthday party at a mutual friend's place, and he, his best friend, and my ex-BFF all came back to our place after partying it up! At the end of the night, he and I were lying on top of each other on the couch while I probed him with some important questions (feminism, what he thought about kids, etc.) while very drunk. The next day, I asked him out to a Beartooth concert. He jokes now that he 'passed the test,' and we’ve been together since!" — u/OnyxManor 8. "We met in the middle of nowhere. I flew across the country for a seasonal job in a remote location. He was also there from a country on the other side of the world. We didn't start hanging out until the last few weeks of the season, but we hooked up the last night we were there." "The season was over, so it was time to leave. We were on a bus together, holding hands and feeling sad. He was going to the airport, and I was going somewhere else; we both had jobs lined up. When we reached my stop, he asked if he could come with me, and I said yes. We canceled our plans and stayed at a hostel for about three weeks while we found jobs and a place to live. Six months later, his visa ended, so I followed him to his home country. We've been together for 11 years." — u/Missteeze 9. "This was in the pre-app, pre-smartphone era and my best friend met a guy at work and brought him over to a punk show we were throwing at our friend's warehouse." "My best friend confessed that he thought this guy was the right man for me, which was odd because he never liked any of my partners in our 10 years of friendship before he introduced me to my husband. I didn’t know he was bringing this new dude over, intending to be a 'matchmaker,' so it was a super chill, no-pressure group hang. I was actually hooking up with three other dudes during that time (ah, youth!), but my now-husband was persistent and won me over. I stopped seeing all other hopefuls within a week of meeting him. We’ve been blissfully in love for almost 20 years, and we still go to punk shows regularly! So, my best friend hand-picked him for me, and it worked amazingly. I got lucky!" — u/Les_Les_Les_Les 10. "It was my third day at a new gym, and I saw this guy who was so hot, tatted up, and stylish. I thought to myself, 'Damn, that's the type of man I should go for when I glow up...I'll ask him out in a few months.'" "Five minutes later, he walks over to me while he's in the middle of his workout, compliments me, and asks me for my IG handle. The rest is history." — u/No_Education3537 11. "Six months after graduation, I moved to Germany with my then-boyfriend for a job. That first day, I had lunch in the company kitchen, and one of the trainers introduced me to his friend. The friend was a quiet, eccentric man I didn't really think anything of." "A couple of weeks later, I was invited to a party late one evening, and I really, really didn't want to go — I'd had all my wisdom teeth removed the previous day and felt like crap. I forced myself to go for at least an hour because I knew the host had made a big effort and only a few people would attend. When I got there, I saw the 'eccentric friend from the kitchen.' We started talking, hit it off immediately, went for a walk, and suddenly, it was daylight. We both felt a connection like nothing before (or since). "I went home, mulled over it for a few days, then broke up with my boyfriend. I felt terrible about that, even though the relationship wasn't going well already, and my boyfriend was not good for me (our friends actually celebrated the break-up). I felt I was abandoning him on a romantic comedy-like whim, but I knew I had to do it." "It's been 12.5 years since I met my current partner, and 'the night of the party' is part of our lore. Funnily enough, in a very 'sliding doors' way, my then-boyfriend had also been invited to the party, but he never wanted to do anything together and couldn't be bothered with going. He stayed home and changed our lives." — u/missseldon 12. "We grew up in a relatively big city, but somehow, our families always lived in the same neighborhood." "When we were 12, we would hang out at the local park. Then, we ran into each other a lot at high school and college parties. For example, his house burnt down when we were in ninth grade, but my family had moved about 25 minutes away that year. I saw him at a party, and it turned out his family was renting a house in our new neighborhood while they rebuilt their burnt house, so he drove me home from that party after years of not seeing each other. After that, we lost touch again for a few years, then saw each other at a party during our first year of college. Nothing romantic happened then, as we were in long-term relationships with other people. Then, five years ago, our friend group was at a cabin for a weekend and he and I reconnected only as friends. Friends turned to lovers, and here we are with a house, a cat, and an insanely deep connection. He’s still my very best friend." — u/cescyc 13. "We met in history class. Our teacher sat us next to each other. We were polar opposites. I was very shy and didn’t talk much, and he was outgoing and loved to talk to people." "He randomly started talking to me one day; he told me his cousin slapped a wax strip on his leg and pulled the hair off...then asked if I wanted to feel it, lol. After that, I would share my homework with him; since it was a retake class for me, and he was a year younger, I knew most of the stuff anyway and would do my homework in class. He missed school often; his uncle would take him to work on houses and businesses or work at the farm. I realized I liked him when I’d look to see if he was coming through the door for class. When he wouldn’t come in, I’d miss him. So, one day, I messaged him on Facebook and asked if he wanted to hang out. We went on a date, and we’ve been together ever since. It'll be 14 years in May. We’ve been married for seven of those years and have three kids. He’s the love of my life and the smartest, kindest, and most loving man I’ve ever met." — u/imthrownaway93 14. "We met at a swing dancing class. He had been going to that studio for several months, and I had just started." "What's nuts is that the studio was picked out by a guy friend of mine with whom I had agreed to take lessons. We lived far from each other, and the studio was between us, so I would not have met my husband if my buddy hadn't chosen that location. Unfortunately, the friend was interested in being more than that, despite me telling him I wasn't. We are no longer friends, but my husband and I owe our 23 years together to him." — u/cheesymoonshadow 15. "In college, I worked as a student secretary for a coffee shop. My eventual boyfriend (now husband) worked as an intern manager, but neither of us reported to each other." "The 'office' we shared with the other coffee shop managers was actually a tiny converted janitor's closet. The more time I spent at work alongside him in this little closet, the more I realized how much I liked him. He was (and still is) incredibly kind to me and was the sweetest person I had met there. I took a chance on Valentine's Day and asked him on a date. We went out the next day and have been inseparable since. I have zero regrets and feel so fortunate to have met the love of my life within only six months of being at school." — u/lw262111 16. "His dad was a pastor, and he was hosting an activity for the church’s kids. My middle school best friend went to that church and convinced me to go with her. One of the activities was hide-and-seek. I hid behind bushes in their backyard, and he found me." "Over the next 10 years, we were frenemies, sometimes friends — I would go visit him at the library he volunteered at, we would play tag, and he’d get in trouble with the older women who worked there. Sometimes, he’d come over to my house, and we’d play in my mom's garden and accidentally trample her flowers. She says she knew we were meant to be the first time he came over to ask if I could come out and play. Then we would fight over something silly and not talk for months. We had a big argument when we were 19 and lost contact. Then, after college, he joined the military." "One day, when we were 22, he reached out, and it was just as it had always been; we could talk about anything and everything. I was still living in our hometown, and he would drive the seven hours it took to visit his family and me; I would convince him to try new foods, and he would show me new music. We would sit in his car and just talk for hours." "Months later, he was set to deploy overseas for the first time, and one night, he called me and told me he had to tell me something. I couldn’t hear him because he was in a room full of people and had awful cellphone service, so I kept saying, 'What? What?' And finally, the third time, I heard it: 'I am trying to tell you that I think I’m in love with you!' We kept in contact while he was deployed. I would send him care packages, and he’d set an alarm for the middle of the night once every few days so the WIFI bandwidth wasn’t throttled and he could FaceTime me. Then he came home and he officially asked me to be his girlfriend. Fast forward to now, and we are in our fifth year of marriage." — u/Fivethreesixthree 17. "We met in high school. When we started dating, I was 15, and he was 17." "Now I’m 50, and we’ve been around the world and back again. We've had high and low ups and downs that were comparable to mountains and undersea trenches. We’ve been dirt poor and lived high on the hog. I would go back and do it all over again in a heartbeat, and the only thing I’d change is that I would worry less because I know it all works out. I’ve sometimes wished my life was an actual novel so I could have peeked at the later chapters to reassure myself that the couple was still together and happy at that point. Hopefully, we’ve still got decades of adventures ahead. I want to die holding his hand." — u/GrumpyBitchInBoots Which one of these "meet-cutes" was your favorite? How did you meet your partner? Canadian telecommunications firms are monitoring their networks for signs that they may have been targeted as part of a global cyberespionage campaign from China. A group of hackers known as Salt Typhoon is being blamed for the sprawling cybersecurity attack that gave Beijing access to the calls and texts of a number of top U.S. officials, including president-elect Donald Trump and vice-president-elect J.D. Vance. There is no indication thus far Canadian networks have also been breached by the campaign, which has dominated headlines for weeks. But experts say the networks contain the same vulnerabilities as those in the U.S., which should serve as a wake-up call to address them. Cyberattacks against Canadian critical infrastructure have become more numerous and sophisticated in recent years. The White House has said that the Salt Typhoon attack, which was perpetrated for a year or more by exploiting legacy telecom equipment, has affected at least eight U.S. telecoms and dozens of countries around the world. China has dismissed the allegations as disinformation. Madeline Deyo, a spokesperson the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, part of the federal cryptologic agency, said in an e-mail Tuesday that it was “not aware of any Canadian networks impacted by this activity,” but had engaged directly with Canadian service providers to help contextualize the nature and significance of the threat posed by the Salt Typhoon hacking campaign. In late October, the Cyber Centre said it was aware that a sophisticated state-sponsored threat actor from China had performed reconnaissance scanning over several months against numerous organizations and government agencies. It listed critical infrastructure providers among the targets. Rogers Communications Inc., RCI-B-T BCE Inc.’s Bell, BCE-T Telus Corp. T-T and SaskTel told The Globe and Mail that they are aware of the reported surveillance affecting telecom providers in the U.S., and are actively working with industry peers and government to remain vigilant against attacks. Cogeco Inc. CGO-T and Bragg Communications Inc.’s Eastlink said they are monitoring the situation. Of these providers, Rogers, Bell and Cogeco said they have not observed any evidence of malicious activity on its networks. Quebecor QBR-B-T did not respond to requests for comment. Yet numerous experts say the full extent of the breach – and its effects on Canada – have likely not yet been discovered. “There’s no reason to think that somehow Canada would be immune from this kind of attack,” said Charles Finlay, executive director of Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst at Toronto Metropolitan University. Canada is particularly vulnerable given the interconnectedness of the telecommunications systems with the United States, he said. Canadian telecoms should be alert given that they generally use similar infrastructure – in particular, core routers and network devices – to what is used by the affected U.S. companies, said Gary Miller, a threat intelligence expert and researcher with the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab. While the U.S. government did not identify a particular company’s equipment as being the entry point for Salt Typhoon, it published last Tuesday specific security guidance for Cisco Systems Inc. products, which are broadly used by Canadian telecoms as well, Mr. Miller said. Moreover, finding evidence of attacks or surveillance takes time, he added. While Canadian telecoms have traditionally been alert to threats entering through cracks in the edge of their networks where it interconnects with other providers, he said, they have not been as quick to identify threats once they’re already inside. There are varying reports about how long the attackers had been inside the networks, with the White House suggesting the infiltration could have been continuing for as long as two years. The fact that different information about the length of the attack is emerging suggests its full breadth is still unknown, said Bryan Pollitt, an EY Canada telecommunications cybersecurity expert. “I don’t think we yet know the full scope of the affected organizations – we’re just learning,” he said. Meanwhile, telecoms and lawmakers shouldn’t discount the recent history of geopolitical tensions with China that may make Canada a target for telecom interference, experts said. Canada has been critical of China’s human-rights record, approach to Hong Kong and Taiwan, and interference in Canadian elections. Ottawa recently imposed new surtaxes on Chinese-made electric vehicles and certain metal imports, and said it is mulling further surtaxes. “Canada has been on the receiving end of negative rhetoric from Chinese-linked actors over the past few years, and it would be naive to think of any such public statements as empty threats,” said Claudiu Popa, president of Datarisk Canada, a Toronto-based cybersecurity firm. In response to the attacks in the U.S., experts are warning Canadian lawmakers about vulnerabilities in this country’s networks. Kate Robertson, a senior researcher at the Citizen Lab, is concerned that a bill currently before Parliament – Bill C-26 – contemplates allowing Ottawa to impose compromise points in next-generation technology, such as 5G networks, to enable government surveillance. By requiring those legal access points, she said, Canada’s networks could be more vulnerable to future attacks. “The attack that is unfolding in the United States is a reflection of historical and continuing vulnerabilities in the mobile communication networks around the world,” Ms. Robertson said. And Mr. Miller said global telecom regulators, including the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, should take a more active role in requiring cybersecurity measures for the industry. While telecom companies have security systems – such as firewalls – in place, they don’t go far enough to protect all aspects of the network, such as protocols that interconnect different operators, he said. And telecoms may be hesitant to go to the furthest lengths possible of their own accord because of the high costs. In an e-mail, the CRTC told The Globe that the Salt Typhoon attacks fall outside its scope. While 5G promises improved security, EY’s Mr. Pollitt cautioned against treating it as a silver bullet. “We need to be mindful that a well-financed, organized, persistent group is going to find a way in and will infiltrate even the best defences,” he said.
President of Argentina Javier Milei announced Wednesday that his administration is preparing a structural tax reform that will eliminate 90 percent of existing taxes in 2025. Milei announced the plan, alongside other policies he seeks to implement in his second year in office, while marking the end of his first. Among them was a plan to negotiate a trade deal with President-elect Donald Trump’s administration once he takes office in January. Tuesday marked one year since Milei took office on December 10, 2023, and became Argentina’s first libertarian president, succeeding socialist former President Alberto Fernández. At the time he took office, Argentina faced a severe economic crisis that dramatically worsened as a result of Fernández’s disastrous socialist policies. Milei implemented a series of drastic “shock therapy” measures to avert the collapse of the country’s economy and avoid a hyperinflation spiral. Milei’s policies successfully reduced the inflation rate in Argentina, dropping it from 25.5 percent in December 2023 to 2.7 percent in October 2024 while also allowing the nation to experience ten months of continued trade surplus as of November. Additionally, Milei spearheaded a dramatic overhaul of the Argentine government during his first year, reducing the number of ministries from 18 to nine on his first day and outright replacing other institutions — such as Argentina’s bloated AFIP revenue service, which was dissolved and substituted with a much smaller agency in November . The Argentine president also introduced a series of sweeping reforms that Congress passed in late June. Milei marked his first year in office by delivering a speech in the evening hours of Tuesday in the company of his ministers and members of his administration. He reviewed the results of his policies and announced a series of upcoming measures. In his roughly 35-minute speech, Milei thanked Argentines for electing him and for “having endured, as you did, the hard months we had at the beginning of our administration,” assuring that their sacrifice “will not be in vain.” “There is a saying that says ‘good times create weak men, weak men create hard times, hard times create strong men, and it is strong men who create good times.’ This year, we Argentines have proven to be strong men and women, forged in the heat of difficult times,” Milei said. “We have shown that, when a people touches the bottom of the abyss, its urgency to undertake a deep and irreversible change becomes a true force of nature,” he continued. Milei stressed that his administration will continue with his economic reforms throughout 2025 and to that end, he stated that his administration is currently finalizing a “structural tax reform” that will reduce the amount of national taxes by 90 percent while restoring tax autonomy to Argentina’s provinces. “Thus, next year we will see a real tax competition among the Argentine provinces to see who will attract the most investment,” Milei said. The Argentine president ensured that his administration will also eliminate existing currency control measures inherited by his government next year and stated that there would be a “free competition of currencies” which, Milei explained, will allow “all Argentines will be able to use the currency they want in their daily transactions.” “This means that from now on every Argentinean will be able to buy, sell and invoice in dollars or the currency they consider, except for the payment of taxes, which for now will continue to be in pesos,” Milei said. The Argentine president posited that it is also essential to “break the foreign trade chains that are currently suffocating us” to accelerate the country’s economic recovery. Argentina is a member of the regional Mercosur trade bloc, a group that Milei has fiercely criticized in the past and which he now holds its pro-tempore presidency as of last week . Milei proposed the elimination of tariff barriers among Mercosur members and added that one of his administration’s goals in Mercosur is to “increase the autonomy of the members of the organization vis-à-vis the rest of the world, so that each country can trade freely with whomever it wants as it suits them.” One of those trade deals, he said, would hopefully be a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States next year — something that, Milei said, “should have been signed 19 years ago.” “Imagine how much we would have grown in these two decades if we had traded with the world’s leading power. All that growth was taken away from us with the simple signature of a group of bureaucrats, who refused to accept the benefits of free trade,” Milei said. “In this way, Argentina will stop turning its back on the world and will once again be a protagonist of world trade, because there is no prosperity without trade and there is no trade without freedom,” he continued. Milei said that his administration will continue with the deregularization and reduction of public spending throughout his second year through a “ruthless audit” that will see the elimination of unnecessary agencies, secretariats, public companies, and state institutions. Other upcoming policies announced by Milei include proposing an “anti-mafia” law inspired by the United States’ Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to fight against organized crime, federal police reforms, the creation of an “anti-narcoterrorism” unit in cooperation with Mercosur to combat drug trafficking in the tri-border area that Argentina shares with Brazil and Paraguay, and the “imminent presentation of a plan to build new nuclear reactors and research small or modular reactor technologies,” among others. Milei observed that 2025 will see Argentina hold midterm legislative elections and stressed that “unlike what politicians usually do, who in election years spend their time squandering the money of all Argentines” his administration would “do something different” and continue implementing his economic reforms. “It is unique in the history of modern democracies that a government begins the election year without an expansionary fiscal and monetary policy, because that is precisely the logic of the past that has sunk us,” Milei said. “We are not going to fall into this temptation that seduced the caste, because we are the future and the prosperity.” “We are going to continue our adjustment program to be able to lower taxes and return money to the private sector, and we are going to put on the table an agenda of profound reforms, developed on the pillars that I told you about today, so that society can legally choose which country it wants,” he continued. The Argentine president concluded by stating that Argentina is heading towards a “future of prosperity” and said 2024 will be remembered as the “first year of the new Argentina.” Milei further stressed that, unlike other moments in the nation’s history where hope was based “on empty words, we have brought results.” “You can see them, you can feel them. That future of prosperity is within our reach. There is nothing you can do to prevent it: you can get on the train of progress or you can be run over by it,” Milei said. Christian K.
