If you’re thinking of buying a “smart” TV for the holidays, you ought to know that your new device is constantly capturing snapshots of what’s on screen and sending them back to the manufacturer — even if you are using the device as a computer monitor and not watching TV at all. The findings come from a recent study by computer scientists at UC Davis; University College London; and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, published in Proceedings of the 2024 ACM on Internet Measurement Conference . Smart TVs can do all the things “dumb” or linear televisions do, plus providing a wide range of internet services and additional channels offered by the manufacturers. You can also cast content from other devices, such as laptops and phones, either wirelessly or with an HDMI connection. Tech companies collect information about our internet use and use it to sell targeted advertising. Zubair Shafiq, associate professor of computer science at UC Davis, and graduate student Yash Vekaria wanted to know how advertisers track you between devices. For example, you might be watching television in the living room, then go into another room to work on your laptop and see ads related to the shows you were just watching come up on your feeds. “To understand cross-device tracking, we wanted to first understand how these TV manufacturers or advertisers know what the user might be interested in. When we started looking into it, we came across technology referred to as ACR, which stands for automatic content recognition. And we found that that’s the main component which is responsible for generating audience segments on a smart TV,” Vekaria said. ACR can recognize content based on small snippets, similar to the Shazam app that can identify song and artist if you play it a piece of music. This ACR code is built into the operating system of smart TVs. The researchers looked at TVs made by two leading manufacturers, Samsung and LG. Vekaria set up an intermediary server to capture traffic coming from a TV set in the lab and discover where it might be going on the internet. He also dug into the code running on the devices. They found that the smart TVs captured snapshots of audio or video as often as every 10 milliseconds, batched them and used an algorithm to generate a “fingerprint” representing all the content over a time interval, such as the past minute. This fingerprint was sent to a company server and matched against a database of all the content available through the TV service. “They do a match against the database to figure out what exact piece of content that user is streaming at this point in time. When they do this over a period of time, they can infer that, say, this person watches NFL from 9 to 12 p.m., but they generally watch news in the afternoon,” Vekaria said. The TV companies can then use this information to sell targeted advertising on their platform. “These smart TV ad platforms have this vast profile of every single TV customer, and the ads on every TV get personalized based on that profile,” Shafiq said. The researchers looked at five types of content: “linear” TV, a single TV channel broadcast by antenna; FAST (Free Ad-Supported TV), essentially a broadcast TV channel delivered over the internet; OTT (over the top), streaming apps such as Netflix or Prime, delivered over the internet; content from a laptop or gaming console connected by HDMI cable; and screencast content mirrored from a nearby laptop or phone. They found that ACR on TVs sold in the United States was capturing linear TV, FAST channels and content shared over HDMI connections, but not screencasts and OTT content. The latter is likely because of agreements with those companies, which collect their own data on users. The researchers also compared ACR in the same brands of smart TVs in the United Kingdom with the U.S. They found that information was being collected and shared at about the same rate in the British models, but there were some more restrictions on ACR data collection on FAST content, probably due to differences in agreements between manufacturers and copyright owners. The documentation that comes with these TV sets does mention data collection and ACR, but the descriptions are vague and high-level, Shafiq said. By default, you have to opt in to ACR to set up your new TV. It is possible to go back in and turn off these settings, but it is not straightforward. “As a user, you might not know all the possible options that exist that you need to turn off,” Shafiq said. “It’s very easy to opt in, but to opt out, it’s an extensive process.” Smart TVs are only the start, Shafiq said. Companies are working on technology such as Microsoft Recall, which records everything you do on the screen of your device and analyzes it with AI. “Basically it's ACR supercharged by AI that is going to be in all of our other devices in the near future. So things are trending in the wrong direction, it seems, from a privacy perspective,” Shafiq said. As for this holiday shopping season, Shafiq said he’s looking for a dumb TV. “Let me know if you can find one,” he said. Programming cells: Revolutionizing genetic circuits with cutting-edge RNA tools December 20, 2024 Pohang University of Science & Technology (POSTECH) Researchers have developed a new technology that improves the precision and integration density of synthetic genetic circuits. Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIN Email Professor Jongmin Kim's research team at POSTECH developed a new technology that improves the precision and integration density of synthetic genetic circuits. The research team led by Professor Jongmin Kim from the Department of Life Sciences at POSTECH, along with graduate students Hyunseop Goh and Seungdo Choi, has successfully developed the 'Synthetic Translational Coupling Element (SynTCE),' significantly enhancing the precision and integration density of genetic circuits in synthetic biology. This research was recently published in 'Nucleic Acids Research' , an international molecular biology and biochemistry journal. 'Synthetic biology' is a research field that assigns new functions to organisms by leveraging natural and synthetic genetic regulatory tools. Organisms engineered through synthetic biology can be applied in various fields, including disease treatment, plastic-degrading microorganisms, and biofuel production. In particular, the 'polycistronic operon' system, where multiple genes are expressed in coordination to form complexes and perform specific functions, is crucial in maximizing encoding efficiency with limited resources. However, to precisely design sophisticated genetic circuits, interference between biological parts must be minimized, and encoding density must be increased for efficient gene circuit integration. Synthetic RNA-based translation regulatory parts often encountered limitations in regulating multiple genes and achieving high precision in circuit functionality due to interferences in the protein translation process. To address this issue, Professor Kim's team focused on 'translational coupling', a natural gene regulation mechanism commonly found in operons that regulate multiple genes, where the translation of upstream genes influences the translation efficiency of downstream genes. Through this research, the team designed 'SynTCE,' which mimics this mechanism, and successfully integrated it with synthetic biological RNA devices to create more efficient genetic circuits. By integrating SynTCE architecture in an RNA computing system that the team previously reported, the integration density of genetic circuits is greatly enhanced by using SynTCE to accurately transmit input signals to downstream genes, enabling systems with unprecedented capability of simultaneous control for multiple inputs and outputs in a single RNA molecule. Notably, by precisely controlling protein N-terminals and eliminating interference in protein translation, SynTCE can be applied in 'biological containment ' technology to selectively eliminate targeted cells and direct proteins to programmed cellular locations. This technology is expected to advance precise functional control and facilitate desired biological operations in cells. Professor Jongmin Kim stated, "This research marks significant progress in enabling sophisticated and accurate genetic circuit design," expressing hope that "this new design will be applied in various fields such as customized cell therapeutics, microorganisms for bioremediation, and biofuel production." This research was supported by various organizations including the Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture and Forestry, the National Research Foundation of Korea, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Pohang City's synthetic biology funding, Korea Health Industry Development Institute's Korea Health Technology R&D Project, Gyeongbuk Techno Park support project, Ministry of Education's 4th BK21 support project, Korea Basic Science Institute project, and Leaders In Industry-University Cooperation 3.0 (LINC 3.0). On December 20 President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with country’s active entrepreneurs. Year-end results on entrepreneurship support and plans for 2025 were discussed at the meeting in a video format. At the beginning of the meeting the Head of State delivered a speech outlining main objectives and achievements: – Development of entrepreneurship – our strategic goal. Entrepreneurs are our strongest support and greatest strength. Therefore, their support should become the daily business of all leaders – from the center to the lowest level. Especially at the local level, hokims should interact more often with entrepreneurs, visit enterprises, and live in their concerns. We should cherish and appreciate business representatives, talented and with great potential. They are very valuable people for us, – emphasized Shavkat Mirziyoyev. In this connection, the activity of the Public Council for Support of Entrepreneurship established under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan has been mentioned. The Council has become a bridge between the state and business, putting forward concrete proposals. This year, 5 laws, 101 decrees and resolutions have been adopted on the most pressing issues of business support. In recent years, the economy has seen an increase in liquidity. This has provided the ground for sustainable financing of investment projects. Funds in the accounts of enterprises in banks have increased by 20 trillion soums, reaching 107 trillion soums. Deposits of the population increased by 25 trillion soums and amounted to 105 trillion soums. According to the year-end results, the total volume of issued loans reached 275 trillion soums. In 2025, this figure will exceed 300 trillion soums. Particular attention will be paid to lending to small businesses: its share will increase from 28 to 40 percent, reaching 120 trillion soums. To meet the needs of entrepreneurs, banks plan to attract $6 billion from external sources without state guarantees in 2025. Owing to the expansion of factoring opportunities, these services have been provided this year in the amount of $100 million. For the development of infrastructure – roads, water supply, electricity and gas supply, railroads – 35 trillion soums were allocated in 2024, and next year it is planned to allocate 43 trillion soums. To supply enterprises with stable power supply, electricity production has reached 82 billion kilowatt-hours. Due to the capacities introduced in 2024, the production will increase to 90 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025. In 2025, 25 projects worth $6.4 billion will add 4.8 gigawatts of additional capacity. Currently, there are 24 independent power producers in the country. In 2025, an online wholesale electricity market will start operating for the first time. As an experiment, the power grids of Samarkand, Jizzakh and Syrdarya regions will be transferred to the management of the private sector. In the tourism sector, entrepreneurs have invested 6.5 trillion soums in construction of hotels for 24 thousand beds. In 2025, this number will grow by another 30 thousand. Another 25 complexes will be added to the 17 trade and tourist facilities commissioned this year. A separate company has been set up to promote trade, which has allocated $350 million in export financing. For every dollar invested, entrepreneurs received $6 in export revenue. In 2024, another $300 million will be allocated for this purpose. In 2024, entrepreneurs acquired 3 thousand state-owned properties and 4 thousand hectares of land with a total value of 11.5 trillion soums. In 2025, another 4.5 thousand buildings and 6 thousand hectares of land will be offered for business. Private sector involvement in the repair and maintenance of roads, which have long been in the monopoly of the state, is expanding. In 2024, 260 kilometers of roads were handed over to entrepreneurs, and in 2025 this figure will increase to 3 thousand kilometers. With support from the Asian Development Bank, 841 kilometers of roads in 86 districts will be built by local contractors. In the railway industry, digitalization and improved operational efficiency reduced freight transportation time by 40 percent. By increasing the time for free unloading of cargo at stations from 2 hours to 3 days, entrepreneurs saved 57 billion soums over the year. In the aviation sector, the number of private companies reached 14. Additional 6 cargo and 16 passenger airplanes were put into operation. Airports in Bukhara and Namangan have been transferred to private management, tenders for airports in Andijan and Urgench are underway. The President emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable tax policy to maintain an attractive business environment. The main tax rates will remain unchanged. From January 1, 2025, state property and land will be sold VAT-free, excise tax on mobile communications will be abolished, and double land tax on agricultural land outside the city limits will be discontinued. Publishing enterprises will be exempted from income tax for 5 years. Preferences for IT park residents, exempting them from all kinds of taxes, will be extended until 2040. Preferences for private schools, kindergartens and foreign specialists will be valid until 2030. The process of Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is reaching its final stage. In this regard, privileges contrary to the WTO rules are canceled. At the same time, all conditions will be created for market participants to work in a fair competitive environment. Transportation and logistics infrastructure also remain in focus. The work of the “Khanabad”, “Mingtepa”, “Karasuv” and “Uchkurgan” border points has been resumed. In 2025, additional corridors will be built at “Gishtkuprik”, “Navoi”, “Davut-ota”, “Shavat” and “Gulbakhor” border crossings, which will increase their capacity fivefold. Despite the challenging geopolitical environment, the country’s economy grew 6.3 percent in 2024 reaching $111 billion. Industry, agriculture and services attracted $38 billion in investment, while exports exceeded $26 billion. The President noted the key role of entrepreneurs who create jobs and reduce poverty in achieving these results, expressing gratitude to them. Next year, it is planned to increase GDP to $120 billion, exports to $30 billion, and investment to more than $42 billion. At the meeting, opinions were exchanged on the necessary steps to achieve these goals. The entrepreneurs suggested simplifying business procedures, deepening processing of raw materials, increasing production of high value-added products and boosting exports. Having listened to the views expressed, the Head of State defined corresponding measures. Primarily, the importance of increasing the incomes of private sector workers was emphasized. In this regard, textile and leather enterprises that pay their employees a salary of at least 2.5 million soums and have at least 15 percent of employees from low-income families will receive tax benefits. For such companies, the rate of profit tax and income tax for their employees will be only 1 percent. The Head of State noted that similar social criteria for granting benefits can be applied in other sectors of the economy. The President underlined the need for entrepreneurs not to limit themselves to bank loans, but to adapt to international standards and independently attract funds from abroad. For this purpose, a center will be created, which will support entrepreneurs’ access to international financial markets with the participation of international consulting companies. There are 142 so-called “champion” companies with more than 5,000 employees and annual revenues exceeding 1 trillion soums. They become multi-profile corporations, contributing to the development of related industries. To support such promising entrepreneurs and stimulate others, it is proposed to provide them with land and buildings directly, as well as transfer state-owned enterprises into long-term management. It is known that 7 out of 10 richest companies in the world work in the field of information technology and fintech services. Additional benefits will be provided for the establishment of such companies in Uzbekistan. In particular, duty-free import of laboratory equipment and technological installations for research and development (R&D) centers will be allowed. Uzbekistan has about a thousand deposits with reserves of more than 100 types of minerals. To utilize them for production of high value-added products, 400 new deposits will be put up for auction in January. Land released from cotton and grain crops will be auctioned in large lots of up to 50 hectares and sold to professional investors to create industrial plantations. On plots of up to 20 hectares it will be possible to create blast freezing, sorting and packaging facilities. It is planned to develop an updated Customs Code, which will meet the requirements of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and modern conditions. At the end of the meeting, the Head of State once again reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives and projects of entrepreneurs. – The entrepreneurial movement in Uzbekistan is turning into a great force, and this process is irreversible. No matter what high goals and objectives we set for ourselves at the state level, we and our people count on you above all. The richer our entrepreneurs are, the richer our people and the greater the power of our state will be. The success of an entrepreneur is the success of our entire nation – underscored the President. It's a question that book lovers ask themselves and each other at this time of year. Finding out what others gush about gives something to excitedly add to book club or to-read lists for 2025. Some people turn to GoodReads and others turn to BookTok, a TikTok community playing an increasingly important role in the book market, to find out what is worth reading. But, in this writer's opinion, nothing beats getting out into the community and stopping at your local bookshop to see the covers brightly poking out from the shelves and ask a friendly face, 'What's the best thing you read this year?' With Russell Books just down the street from the Victoria News office, they were our first stop. Here are five favourite books from different people who work at this beloved local shop, and a description of why they loved the book in their own words. Zoe's pick: Babel, or the Necessity of Violence by R. F. Kuang Imagine a world in which the industrial revolution was fuelled not by coal, but by language. In R.F. Kuang's unique alternate history, the linguistic tension created by an imperfect translation can be used to propel a train... or detonate a bomb. In this world, the British Empire plunders its colonies not for fossil fuels but for human beings: native speakers of specific languages. Set in an alternate Oxford University in the 1830s, the book follows Robin, an orphan who is plucked from poverty in Canton by a wealthy patron and enrolled in the Royal Institute of Translation (aka Babel). This book is a richly researched, incredibly compelling exploration of colonialism and its devastating effects. I'm still thinking about it months later, and it's my go-to recommendation for anyone who reads either literary fiction or sci-fi/fantasy!" Jack Knox' pick: The Duel: Diefenbaker, Pearson and the Making of Modern Canada by John Ibbitson This is Canadian history-nerd heaven. The Duel, by Globe and Mail political writer John Ibbitson, not only documents the rise and rivalry of Canadian prime ministers Lester Pearson and John Diefenbaker but also shows how their mid-20th century conflict shaped the Canada we know today. The two clashed in every way, with easy-going Pearson comfortable in the halls of power yet harbouring a hidden ruthlessness, while chip-on-his-shoulder Diefenbaker fought for his fellow outsiders but couldn’t keep out of his own way. Still, from universal health care to no-nukes to immigration and the Canada Pension Plan, the rivals built on each other’s decisions, framing the House we take for granted. The depth of Ibbitson’s research is staggering, his analysis cogent and even-handed, and his use of language both economical and precise. Molly Kines' pick: Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion “...and maybe no one else felt the ground hardening and summer already dead even as we pretended to bask in it, but that was how it felt to me, and it might as well have snowed, could have snowed, did snow.” As Joan Didion puts it, whether it snowed one summer in Vermont or it didn't, it doesn't matter. To focus on the snow is to miss the point. To write is to discover your own life, and to feel it how it is meant to be felt by you. Joan finds significance in the every day, in the mundane, and in a possibly fabricated August cold snap — and this is precisely her genius. Read her. She blew my mind in 2023, and she blew my mind just as much this year. You won’t regret it! Leah Henderson's pick: Noopiming (The Cure for White Ladies) by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson I read this book early in the year and then re-read it to absorb it more fully. It is written in the new-to-me genre of “novel in verse”. The language is beautiful, circular, funny, clever, and compassionate. Simpson is a Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg writer and is a skilled artist of words. The story follows seven characters – old man, maple tree, old woman, the giant, the cariboo, and two humans, Asin and Lucy, as they attempt to communicate with the urban settler world. This book made me laugh out loud and sit quietly to let a breathtaking description sink in. It is a creative response by an Indigenous woman to the memoirs of Susannah Moodie, an early Canadian settler. It’s like a dance of understanding between coming to a new land for adventure and conquest, and living with an old land in harmony, and communion with every living thing – lake, trees, animals, rocks – as friends, and not things to be subjugated. I highly recommend this book! Brian's pick: Held by Canadian author Anne Michaels My favourite read of 2024 was the Booker-shortlisted, and Giller Prize-winning novel, Held. This exquisitely written book embroiders a multigenerational tale through the 20th century, beginning with the effect of the First World War on a young man and his family. The pivotal moments of one generation are mapped onto the lives of the next, and Michaels explores which echoes are heard and which are not. The characters she creates are transformed by the preceding generation in ways that are often unknown to them, but always penetrate to their core. The novel was particularly poignant for me because the young soldier that begins this tale was stationed near the River Escaut in northern France, just as my grandfather was during the First World War. I was left wondering what part of him I have held onto 100 years after his momentous experiences.
