Rookie Michael Penix Jr. showed what a young QB can do on Sunday against the Giants, who need to learn from it. Lawyers for all three defendants denied the allegations to Business Insider. YouTube star Connor Franta is suing his business partners, alleging in a lawsuit that they embezzled more than $1 million from the company they cofounded in 2015. In the suit, filed in California Superior Court this week, Franta — a 32-year-old YouTuber with 4.8 million subscribers — is suing his cofounders in Heard Well, a music label that works with influencers. He also names the company's business manager — who is the father of one of the cofounders — as a defendant, accusing him of turning a blind eye to the alleged theft. Advertisement The business partners and manager all denied the allegations in statements to Business Insider. The suit alleges Heard Well cofounder Jeremy Wineberg used an American Express Black Card obtained in the company's name for personal expenses, including international travel, concert tickets, tattoos, groceries, and plastic surgery. The suit says Wineberg "systematically looted the company of essentially every penny," using Heard Well funds to pay the Amex balances. Another cofounder, Franta's former CAA agent Andrew Graham, also "converted thousands of Heard Well dollars" for personal use, the suit alleges. By REBECCA SANTANA, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The picture of who will be in charge of executing President-elect Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration and border policies has come into sharper focus after he announced his picks to head Customs and Border Protection and also the agency tasked with deporting immigrants in the country illegally. Trump said late Thursday he was tapping Rodney Scott, a former Border Patrol chief who’s been a vocal supporter of tougher enforcement measures, for CBP commissioner. As acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Trump said he’d nominate Caleb Vitello, a career ICE official with more than 23 years in the agency who most recently has been the assistant director for firearms and tactical programs. They will work with an immigration leadership team that includes South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security ; former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement head Tom Homan as border czar ; and immigration hard-liner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff. Customs and Border Protection, with its roughly 60,000 employees, falls under the Department of Homeland Security. It includes the Border Patrol, which Scott led during Trump’s first term, and is essentially responsible for protecting the country’s borders while facilitating trade and travel. Scott comes to the job firmly from the Border Patrol side of the house. He became an agent in 1992 and spent much of his career in San Diego. When he joined the agency, San Diego was by far the busiest corridor for illegal crossings. Traffic plummeted after the government dramatically increased enforcement there, but critics note the effort pushed people to remote parts of California and Arizona. San Diego was also where wall construction began in the 1990s, which shaped Scott’s belief that barriers work. He was named San Diego sector chief in 2017. When he was appointed head of the border agency in January 2020, he enthusiastically embraced Trump’s policies. “He’s well known. He does know these issues and obviously is trusted by the administration,” said Gil Kerlikowske, the CBP commissioner under the Obama administration. Kerlikowske took issue with some of Scott’s past actions, including his refusal to fall in line with a Biden administration directive to stop using terms like “illegal alien” in favor of descriptions like “migrant,” and his decision as San Diego sector chief to fire tear gas into Mexico to disperse protesters. “You don’t launch projectiles into a foreign country,” Kerlikowske said. At the time Scott defended the agents’ decisions , saying they were being assaulted by “a hail of rocks.” While much of the focus of Trump’s administration may be on illegal immigration and security along the U.S.-Mexico border, Kerlikowske also stressed the importance of other parts of Customs and Border Protection’s mission. The agency is responsible for securing trade and international travel at airports, ports and land crossings around the country. Whoever runs the agency has to make sure that billions of dollars worth of trade and millions of passengers move swiftly and safely into and out of the country. And if Trump makes good on promises to ratchet up tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada, CBP will play an integral role in enforcing them. “There’s a huge amount of other responsibility on trade, on tourism, on cyber that take a significant amount of time and have a huge impact on the economy if it’s not done right,” Kerlikowske said. After being forced out under the Biden administration, Scott has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s hard-line immigration agenda. He has appeared frequently on Fox News and testified in Congress. He’s also a senior fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. In a 2023 interview with The Associated Press, he advocated for a return to Trump-era immigration policies and more pressure on Mexico to enforce immigration on its side of the border.The Chinese-linked Salt Typhoon cyberespionage operation targeted AT&T and Verizon’s systems, but the wireless carriers’ US networks are now secure as they work with law enforcement and government officials, the companies said on Saturday in their first acknowledgment of the attacks. “We detect no activity by nation-state actors in our networks at this time. Based on our current investigation of this attack, the People’s Republic of China targeted a small number of individuals of foreign intelligence interest,” an AT&T spokesperson said. While only a few cases of compromised information were identified, AT&T was monitoring and remediating its networks to protect customers data, and continues to work with authorities to assess and mitigate the threat, the spokesperson said. “We have not detected threat actor activity in Verizon’s network for some time, and after considerable work addressing this incident, we can report that Verizon has contained the activities associated with this particular incident,” Verizon’s chief legal officer said in a statement. An independent and highly respected cyber security firm has confirmed the containment, Verizon said. On Friday, US officials added a ninth unnamed telecom company to the list of entities compromised by the Salt Typhoon hackers and said the Chinese involved gained access to networks and essentially had broad and full access, giving them the capability to “geolocate millions of individuals, to record phone calls at will.” The US Department of Defense and the Federal Communications Commission did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment on the company statements. China’s foreign ministry could not immediately be contacted for comment. Chinese officials have previously described the allegations as disinformation and said Beijing “firmly opposes and combats cyber attacks and cyber theft in all forms.” Officials previously alleged hackers targeted Verizon AT&T, Lumen and other telecom companies, and stole telephone audio intercepts along with a large swath of call record data. In response to that cyberattack, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency on Dec. 18 urged senior government and political figures to move mobile communications to end-to-end encrypted apps. A visit to Ottawa's Taffy Lane in Orléans is a staple this time of year, but a dispute amongst neighbours over traffic congestion is threatening to dim the magic of the holidays. "I'll politely refer to them as grinches," said Tony Sullivan. "They're complaining about the traffic and traffic issues." Sullivan lives on Sugar Creek Way off Taffy Lane, which is famously known for spreading holiday cheer with its elaborately decorated homes. Each year, the brightly lit street attracts thousands, and Sullivan says people will often stop at the end of his driveway to donate and collect chocolate and other goodies in return. But the exchange is prompting complaints to police. "They implied they are going to start ticketing us if we are on the street and we are obstructing traffic," Sullivan said. Police say they've received two calls about the traffic, but neither resulted in a ticket. Police would not comment about future enforcement. "There are some neighbours on the street that are frustrated with trying to leave their house and they have to wait just for the collection of the money," said neighbour Peter Abercrombie. The homes on Taffy Lane have been known to light up the holidays since the 1970's. For Abercrombie, it's his 47th year and says he doesn't mind the traffic. "People will actually line up and wait for the lights to come on at 5 p.m.," said Abercrombie. "Lots of smiles everyone comes up the laneway and does a tour." While donations are not required to enjoy the magic, Sullivan says he refuses to let the situation dampen his spirits. "If they want to charge me over kindness they can go ahead and charge me with that, but I'll always give back to the community," he said. Yes, in honor of the popular Netflix show’s anticipated second season, I’ve been sent a very scarce Squid Game variant of SCUF’s excellent—and officially licensed—Instinct Pro Xbox gamepad. It’s numbered 222 out of 456, a clever nod to the show’s contestant count, but unfortunately, you can’t buy this particular peripheral. You’ll have to win it. These special teal-colored Game Over controllers will be available to acquire via a Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 tournament on December 16 in Squid Game: The Experience , a sort of real-life (and hopefully less, uh, dangerous?) recreation of the popular dystopian TV series at the Manhattan Mall in New York City. The 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro Bundle comes to mind, but in the end, I do understand wanting to create buzz and demand around new shows and products. That said, just let us purchase things we like, man! If you haven’t used an Instinct Pro before, it basically has the same plastic shell as a Microsoft OEM controller, only with added quality-of-life and functionality improvements, like back paddles, a magnetic battery cover, adjustable triggers and differently molded thumbsticks. Similar to an Elite controller, really, although there’s no rechargeable battery included. This is the one glaring drawback on the Instinct Pro, I think. That, and I prefer the stock analog sticks on the official controller. Personally, I still think SCUF makes great stuff, and I’m going to enjoy putting this special Game Over variant to work in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle , a title I’m hoping to start playing this weekend. Plus, if you do attend the Squid Game event in NYC this month, and you end up winning something, let me know! I’ll be fascinated to learn how you jam a six-foot-tall creepy doll into your 1994 Ford Taurus. Bonus points if you take her through the McDonald’s drive-through for a quick Coke.
