Key Facts What To Watch For Jean-Pierre told reporters Monday they can expect more pardons before the end of Biden’s term on Jan. 20. Big Number 26. That’s the number of pardons Biden has issued since 2021, including his son Hunter Biden. In April, he pardoned 11 people convicted of non-violent drug offenses he said had shown a commitment to improving their lives. Key Background Biden announced Sunday he pardoned his son Hunter Biden for his felony convictions, claiming the Justice Department was politically motivated when it prosecuted him for a set of tax and gun charges. Biden announced the decision despite saying previously he would not pardon his son. Hunter Biden was set to be sentenced later this month on charges of lying on the federal paperwork required to purchase a gun by saying he was not a drug user and for failing to pay over $1 million in taxes on time. In announcing the decision, Biden said it is extremely rare for the Justice Department to bring charges for lying on the gun form. The president also claimed the DOJ doesn’t typically prosecute people who “were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties,” referencing Hunter Biden’s well-documented addiction to crack cocaine at the time. The pardon prohibits the federal government from prosecuting the younger Biden for any alleged offenses that have occurred since the start of 2014, in addition to clearing his record of the felony tax and gun charges. The decision drew bipartisan blowback , including from Trump, who called it “an abuse and miscarriage of Justice” in a Truth Social post. Quantum computing is a hot topic right now. Three of the four highest-performing stocks in the last six months are pure play investments in this technology. Investors expect big things from a new class of computers, with the promise of solving incredibly complex problems in the blink of an eye. Leading quantum computer builder IonQ ( IONQ -5.72% ) gained 484% in six months as of Dec. 26. Believe it or not, but that jump doesn't qualify IonQ for a top-four finish. No, IonQ lands in the 16th place on this list, far behind the 2,735% gain posted by smaller rival Quantum Computing, Inc. ( QUBT -4.63% ) . Can Quantum Computing build on its recent success? Will IonQ turn the tables and outperform the smaller company in 2025? What else do you need to know before investing in the explosive quantum computing market? Metric Quantum Computing IonQ Market Cap $2.4 billion $10.2 billion Revenue (TTM) $390,000 $37.5 million Net Profit Margin (TTM) (6,159%) (457.9%) Free Cash Flow (TTM) ($20.5 million) ($120.4 million) Cash and Short-Term Investments $3.06 million $301.8 million Data collected from Finviz and YCharts on Dec. 26, 2024. TTM = trailing twelve months. Compare and contrast the financial results These financial statements have a lot in common. IonQ and Quantum Computing's stocks are worth billions of dollars despite minimal revenues and deeply negative bottom-line profits. Neither company is attempting to make a profit at this point. They are development-stage businesses set up to deliver new and improved technologies that might support a profitable business someday. I'm not speculating here. Here's what IonQ said about its business prospects in regulatory filings before entering the public stock market in 2021: Quantum Computing offered another sobering self-analysis in 2020: "We incurred negative cash flows from operating activities and recurring net losses in fiscal years 2019 and 2018. [...] These factors, among others, raise substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern ." Wall Street's ditches are littered with the remains of development-stage businesses that never lived up to their early expectations. IonQ and Quantum Computing are the first to admit that they might be next in line for financial disaster, bankruptcy, and crumbling investor value. I'm not saying that the two companies are doomed to fail, but you should be aware of the substantial risks involved in owning these stocks. Even if you don't mind risky investments , it's best to make smallish bets on any stock in this volatile industry. Some of the most promising research projects may never result in commercial-grade computing systems, after all. What makes these quantum computing specialists unique IonQ is a leading manufacturer of quantum computing systems. So far, its customer list includes several branches of the U.S. military, South Korean vehicle maker Hyundai , and industrial machinery giant Caterpillar . Anyone can access IonQ hardware through popular cloud-computing platforms from Amazon , Microsoft , and Alphabet . The IonQ Forte system hit the market a year ago. Its trapped ion architecture provides 32 qubits of quantum computing power. That's enough to perform some simple calculations, though the error rate is still high. Estimated to cost about $13 million, the Forte system is still not useful for any real-world business task. Quantum Computing (the company, not the technology itself) started out with a tight focus on providing software and algorithms to run on quantum computing hardware from other companies. Since then, the company has merged with a quantum hardware researcher and is now looking for opportunities to sell computing systems, too. This company is not shipping any hardware yet, though. The third-quarter report in November highlighted several partnerships and research programs, looking forward to potential system sales in 2025. How to invest in quantum computing stocks today All things considered, I think it's too early to pick long-term winners in the promising but risky field of quantum computing. I would approach this game-changing technology from a safer angle. Some of the largest tech giants are also developing quantum computing systems these days, including some of the IonQ partners mentioned earlier. These deep-pocketed businesses are better equipped to manage the unpredictable nature of risky research projects. But I promised to pick a winner in this specific duel, and the choice is very clear. IonQ has already proven its ability to win long-term development contracts and actually deliver a few systems to real-world customers. Moreover, this company has enough cash reserves to make it a couple of years without being forced to raise extra cash in uncomfortable ways. The Quantum Computing company doesn't have that luxury. So I would much rather own IonQ stock than Quantum Computing shares. Your mileage may vary, but the smaller company is too risky for my blood.

Ruth ComerfordShare Tweet Share Share Email Quality doors play a pivotal role in the design and functionality of commercial buildings. They not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a property but also contribute significantly to its safety, energy efficiency, and user experience. From high-rise office complexes to bustling retail spaces, the right choice of doors can define the character of a building while meeting the practical demands of its occupants. Aesthetic Appeal and First Impressions The doors of a commercial building are often the first physical interaction visitors have with the property, making their design and quality crucial. High-quality doors set the tone for the rest of the building, creating a lasting first impression that reflects professionalism and attention to detail. Whether crafted from sleek glass or robust steel, their visual impact cannot be understated. In addition to their visual appeal, the choice of materials and finishes plays a vital role in establishing the building’s identity. For instance, modern office spaces may favor minimalist designs with clean lines, while luxury hotels might opt for ornate doors with intricate craftsmanship. The ability of a door to seamlessly blend with or enhance the overall architectural style adds value to the property and supports brand positioning. Moreover, the durability and maintenance of these doors also influence their long-term appearance. High-quality finishes and materials ensure that doors retain their aesthetic charm over time, even in high-traffic environments. This is a critical consideration for property owners who prioritize both form and function. Functionality and Performance Beyond aesthetics, the functionality of commercial doors is fundamental to their effectiveness. A door must cater to the specific needs of its environment, whether that involves accommodating heavy foot traffic, facilitating accessibility, or providing robust security. For instance, automatic sliding doors in retail settings enhance convenience, while heavy-duty steel doors are often essential for industrial facilities. Quality doors are engineered to withstand the unique demands of their surroundings, ensuring consistent performance under stress. Factors such as soundproofing, insulation, and resistance to environmental wear-and-tear further underscore the importance of selecting well-designed, durable options. Doors that fail to meet these standards can quickly become liabilities, leading to increased maintenance costs and potential safety risks. Additionally, the role of doors in optimizing energy efficiency cannot be overlooked. Insulated and well-sealed doors help regulate indoor temperatures, reducing energy consumption and costs. In today’s eco-conscious landscape, businesses are increasingly seeking door solutions that align with sustainability goals, blending functionality with environmental responsibility. Safety and Security Considerations Safety and security are paramount in commercial building design, and doors are a critical component of a building’s overall protection strategy. From fire-rated doors to reinforced entryways, high-quality doors ensure the safety of occupants and assets while complying with regulatory standards. Fire-rated doors, in particular, are indispensable in safeguarding lives during emergencies. These doors are designed to contain fires, prevent the spread of smoke, and provide occupants with safe evacuation routes. Nationwide suppliers, such as USA Fire Door, play an essential role in providing commercial establishments with top-tier doors and hardware that meet these rigorous safety standards. Choosing products from reliable distributors ensures that businesses receive doors built to exact specifications and quality , fostering peace of mind for property owners and occupants alike. Security is another critical aspect of commercial doors, especially in facilities housing sensitive information or valuable assets. Advanced locking mechanisms, reinforced materials, and integration with building access control systems provide an additional layer of protection. The right doors can act as both a physical and psychological deterrent to potential threats, contributing to a safer and more secure environment. Accessibility and Compliance Incorporating accessibility into commercial building design is both a legal requirement and an ethical imperative. Doors play a central role in ensuring that buildings are navigable for all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities. Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other regulations often dictates the choice of door types, sizes, and operational mechanisms. Automatic doors, wide entryways, and lever-style handles are just a few examples of design elements that prioritize accessibility. These features enhance the user experience for individuals with mobility challenges while promoting inclusivity. Additionally, quality doors equipped with advanced sensors or touchless technology further streamline access for diverse user groups. Ensuring compliance also extends to fire safety and egress requirements. Emergency exits must be fitted with doors that meet stringent specifications for quick and efficient evacuation. By addressing these factors, commercial properties can avoid legal penalties while fostering a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Durability and Cost Efficiency Durability is a hallmark of quality doors in commercial settings, where constant use and environmental exposure can lead to wear and tear. Investing in high-quality doors reduces the frequency of replacements and repairs, translating to significant cost savings over time. Durable materials, such as metal alloys, tempered glass, and treated wood, ensure that doors withstand daily challenges while maintaining their structural integrity. Cost efficiency also involves considering the long-term operational benefits of quality doors. For instance, energy-efficient doors equipped with thermal breaks and weather seals help minimize heating and cooling expenses. Similarly, low-maintenance designs reduce the time and resources spent on upkeep, providing property owners with a more sustainable solution. Moreover, durable doors enhance occupant satisfaction by maintaining their functionality and appearance over the years. This contributes to a positive perception of the building and can even influence tenant retention rates in commercial properties. Technological Integration Modern commercial doors are increasingly integrated with advanced technology to meet the evolving demands of businesses and users. Features such as automated locking systems, biometric access control, and smart sensors enhance both convenience and security. These innovations are particularly valuable in high-traffic areas where efficiency and control are paramount. Smart doors equipped with IoT (Internet of Things) capabilities can be programmed to interact with other building systems, such as HVAC and lighting. For example, a door might trigger lights to turn on in a room when opened or adjust temperature settings based on occupancy. These seamless integrations improve energy efficiency and user experience, aligning with the growing emphasis on intelligent building design. Technological advancements also contribute to enhanced monitoring and management. Property managers can use connected systems to track usage patterns, identify maintenance needs, and ensure compliance with security protocols. By incorporating technology, commercial doors can deliver more than just basic functionality—they become integral to the building’s overall operational strategy. Environmental Impact and Sustainability As businesses prioritize sustainability, the environmental impact of building materials, including doors, has come under greater scrutiny. High-quality doors made from eco-friendly materials or incorporating recycled components support greener construction practices. These options not only reduce environmental harm but also appeal to tenants and customers seeking environmentally responsible businesses. Energy-efficient doors also play a role in reducing the carbon footprint of commercial buildings. By minimizing energy waste, these doors help properties achieve certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), enhancing their marketability and long-term value. Builders and designers are increasingly prioritizing doors that align with sustainable building codes and initiatives. The lifecycle of a door—spanning manufacturing, installation, use, and disposal—should also be considered in sustainability assessments. Opting for durable, low-impact materials and designs ensures that doors contribute positively to the environment throughout their lifespan. By integrating sustainable choices into door selection, commercial buildings can strike a balance between performance and environmental stewardship. Final Thoughts Quality doors are more than functional elements in commercial building design—they are vital assets that influence aesthetics, safety, accessibility, and sustainability. By choosing high-quality options tailored to a building’s unique needs, property owners can enhance their spaces while achieving long-term value. As the industry evolves, the role of doors will continue to expand, integrating new technologies and sustainable practices to meet the challenges of modern architecture. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — In a season that began with many questions and lowered expectations , it was apt watching Bills quarterback Josh Allen join coach Sean McDermott lay on the cold, wet sideline to make snow angels in celebrating Buffalo’s earliest clinching of a division title in team history. That Allen took part was no surprise. The newly engaged 28-year-old has maintained the happy-go-lucky approach he brought with him to Buffalo as a raw-talented athlete in 2018, while gradually blossoming into one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. For McDermott, it was a pleasant surprise to see the usually reserved eight-year coach finally let his hair down — figuratively, because the few jokes he does make are usually about being bald. With his latest do-it-all three-TD outing — one rushing, one receiving and, the coup de grace, being credited with receiving his own pass for a score off a lateral from Amari Cooper — in a 35-10 win over San Francisco on Sunday night , Allen continued making his strongest NFL MVP case. What’s also becoming apparent is how much McDermott deserves consideration for coach of the year honors. Without the two, the Bills (10-2) wouldn’t be in this position in becoming just the eighth NFL team — and first since Indianapolis in 2009 — to clinch a division title with at least five games remaining in their schedule. It’s reflective of how the two have grown together in what, on the outside, could be perceived as an odd couple relationship between an offensive-minded, swashbuckling quarterback and a defensive-minded coach, too often knocked for being too conservative. Perhaps, it’s Allen’s boyish nature that has brought out the risk-taker in McDermott, who has carried over the aggressive approach he takes to defense by placing trust in his quarterback. It’s become apparent in everything the Bills have accomplished so far in having at least 10 wins through 12 games for just the fifth time in team history, and first since 1991, when Buffalo was led by eventual Hall of Famers in coach Marv Levy and quarterback Jim Kelly. Buffalo has won seven straight since consecutive losses to Baltimore and Houston. And the Bills have scored 30 or more points in six straight outings, matching the team record set in 2004. Allen is doing more with less on an offense that was supposed to be hampered following the offseason departures of receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis and center Mitch Morse. The Bills are more balanced in leaning on their running attack, while Allen has also curtailed his turnover-prone ways. He's lost two fumbles and thrown just five interceptions after being picked off a career-worst 18 times last season. Meantime, McDermott has taken a different approach to fourth down situations. The Bills have converted 13 of 15 fourth down attempts after going 9 of 16 last season and 7 of 13 in 2022. The most fourth down attempts during McDermott’s tenure came in 2021, when Buffalo converted just 11 of 22. This is but an example of the bond the quarterback and coach have built in a shared objective of overcoming past playoff failures. Clinching a division title is but one step, with the Bills now focused on catching the Kansas City Chiefs (11-1), whom they’ve beaten already , for the AFC’s top seed. In calling it the team’s next goal, McDermott went off script from his usual game-at-a-time message by noting the importance of celebrating a division-clinching win, if only for one day. “Being 50 years old and 20-plus years in this league, I’ve learned to try and enjoy the moments,” McDermott said. “And this is a moment, right?” It certainly was. What’s working Turnover differential. Buffalo’s defense forced three fumbles, including one at its goal line, while the offense didn’t commit a giveaway. The Bills upped their league-leading turnover differential entering Monday to plus-17. What needs help Run defense. Though the conditions were snowy and slick, the Bills allowed 119 yards rushing in the first half before the 49ers were forced to start passing the ball once the score became lopsided. Buffalo particularly struggled in stopping Christian McCaffrey, who had 53 yards on seven carries before leaving the game with a potential season-ending knee injury . Stock up LB Matt Milano was in on five tackles while playing 37 of 48 defensive snaps in his first outing in nearly 14 months after being sidelined by a broken right leg and torn left biceps. Stock down CB Kaiir Elam, the 2022 first-round pick was a healthy inactive for a second straight outing, and still having difficulty finding a regular role. Injuries None reported. Tomislav Ivisic scored a career-high 23 points to lead six players in double figures as No. 24 Illinois raced past visiting Chicago State 117-64 on Sunday in Champaign, Ill. Kylan Boswell also starred for the Fighting Illini (9-3) with an 18-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double. Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn added 16 points, while Kasparas Jakucionis contributed 14. Will Riley hit for 13 points and Morez Johnson Jr. came off the bench to net 11. Gabe Spinelli scored 20 points for the winless Cougars (0-15) and Noble Crawford added 15, but they just didn't have the scoring punch to stay with their Big Ten Conference opponent. Illinois outshot Chicago State 62.1 percent (41 of 66) to 37.3 percent (25 of 67) from the field and 45.5 percent (15 of 33) to 32.3 percent (10 of 31) from the 3-point line. The Cougars were also outrebounded 47-23. Illinois led for all but 24 seconds of the game, scoring basically at will. The Illini reaped a 28-4 advantage in free-throw attempts, drew 26 assists and earned a 48-16 advantage in points in the paint. In its last game before jumping into the bulk of its Big Ten schedule Thursday night at Oregon, Illinois wasted no time putting its stamp on the game. It carved out a double-figure edge at the 14:59 mark of the first half on Gibbs-Lawhorn's 3-pointer that made it 17-7 and simply kept expanding that lead. The margin reached 20 for the first time with 10:06 left when Ivisic drained a 3-pointer from the right wing for a 32-10 cushion. Johnson's foul shot with 3:43 remaining increased the advantage to 30 at 48-18, and Jake Davis' 3-pointer from the corner with a second on the clock gave the Illini a 60-24 cushion at halftime. Boswell's short jumper with 18:22 left in the game built Illinois' first 40-point advantage at 65-24. Riley splashed a 3-pointer with 9:57 remaining to up the lead to 50 at 93-43. Davis made another 3-pointer at the 7:59 mark to get the Illini to the 100-point threshold. They led by as many as 58 points in the final two minutes. --Field Level MediaTAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay’s bid for a fourth straight NFC South title and fifth consecutive playoff berth is gaining momentum. Back-to-back wins over a pair of last-place teams , combined with Atlanta’s three-game losing streak, have propelled the Bucs (6-6) to a tie atop the division. Although the Falcons (6-6) hold a tiebreaker after sweeping the season series between the teams, Tampa Bay can control its own destiny by finishing strong against a less than imposing schedule. The Bucs, who are back in the thick of the race after beating the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers, figure to be favored in four of their five remaining games. “Every week, we said it’s a playoff game, we got to take care of us. It’s not going to be easy. As it was (Sunday), it’s going to be a dog fight every week,” coach Todd Bowles said after Sunday’s 26-23 overtime win at Carolina. “We got to clean up some things, we know that, but it's hard to win in this league,” the coach said of the mistake-filled victory that lifted the Bucs back to .500. “We’ll take a win any way we can get it.” After facing Las Vegas (2-10) this week, the Bucs will finish with road games against the Los Angeles Chargers (8-4) and Dallas Cowboys (5-7), followed by home dates vs. Carolina (3-9) and the New Orleans Saints (4-8). Kicker Chase McLaughlin has been one of team’s most consistent performers, converting 21 of 23 field goal attempts. He was 4 of 5 against the Panthers, including 51-yarder to force overtime on the final play of regulation. He missed from 55 yards in OT before winning it with a 30-yard field goal on Tampa Bay’s next possession. Just when it appeared the defense was beginning to trend in the right direction, Carolina's Bryce Young threw for 298 yards without an interception against the Bucs in one of his better outings of the season. “In the first half, he did it with his feet and the second half he did it with his arm,” Bowles said. Running back Bucky Irving rushed for a career-best 152 yards and finished with 185 from scrimmage against Carolina, making him the first rookie since Miles Sanders in 2019 to have consecutive games with 150-plus yards from scrimmage. A week after playing well offensively and defensively in a 23-point rout of the New York Giants, the Bucs were sloppy against the Panthers. In addition to throwing two interceptions, Mayfield was sacked four times. Tampa Bay was penalized seven times for 54 yards, and the defense was only able to sack Young once. Mayfield (sore leg), linebacker K.J. Britt (sprained ankle) and safety Mike Edwards (hamstring) will be on the injury report this week. Bowles said he’s not sure what Mayfield's practice status will be when the team reconvenes Wednesday, however he expects the quarterback to play Sunday. 37 and 101 — Wide receiver Mike Evans had another big day against Carolina, posting the 37th 100-yard receiving performance of his career — fifth among active players. He also moved ahead of Hall of Famers Steve Largent and Tim Brown for sole possession of ninth place on the all-time list for TD receptions with 101. The Buccaneers host Las Vegas in Tampa Bay's first home game in a month and the third consecutive outing against a last-place team. The Raiders (2-10) have lost eight in a row.
