Venne, born in Lamont, Alta., was one of the first appointees to Alberta’s Human Rights Commission in 1973 and later served as chair. She founded the Women of the Métis Nation as well as Esquao, the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women. She also created programming for the Métis Nation of Alberta before serving as provincial vice president from 2008 to 2012. “Muriel devoted her life to advancing the rights and well-being of Métis and other Indigenous peoples,” reads an online tribute to Venne made by the Métis Nation of Alberta. “Through her remarkable leadership, she transformed advocacy into action, creating lasting change in employment, education and justice.” In 2017, Venne had a provincial government building named after her in Edmonton. It was the first time a provincial building was named after an Indigenous woman in Alberta. In a statement, the Women of the Métis Nation, also known as Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak, said Venne was an inspiration to many Indigenous women. It said her advocacy work for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls was a catalyst for change in the justice system, as was her advocacy for Cindy Gladue. For years, patients in the U.S. health care system have grown frustrated with . Doctors are included in an insurer’s network one year but not the next. Getting someone on the phone to help can be next to impossible. Coverage of care and prescriptions is often unceremoniously denied. This week’s of has unleashed a wave of public feeling — exasperation, anger, resentment, helplessness — from Americans sharing personal stories of interactions with insurance companies, often seen as faceless corporate giants. In particular, the words found at the shooting scene — “delay,” “deny” and “depose,” echoing a phrase used to describe how insurers dodge claim payouts — amplified voices that have long been critical of the industry. “All of a sudden, I am fired up again,” said Tim Anderson, describing how his wife, Mary, had to deal with UnitedHealthcare coverage denials before she died from Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in 2022. Anderson said they couldn’t get coverage for machines to help his wife breathe or talk — toward the end, she communicated by blinking when he showed her pictures. When you look back at the figures, from 2010, we wonder why we sort of lacked the will power maybe, to push this to the top of our domestic agenda then? Health Ministry medical officer West Dr Abdul Shah believes the rise in new HIV cases is cause for concern. We agree! Speaking at the World AIDS Day event in Nadi on Friday, Mr Shah said they had seen an increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases in Fiji. Of the new cases, he noted, an overwhelming 97 per cent were diagnosed in adults, with a concerning trend of mother-to-child transmission also on the rise. This year, Mr Shah said, there were multiple new infections diagnosed in newborns! He said 15 per cent of new cases reported involved people who used injectable illicit drugs! In saying that, there had also been an increase in AIDS-related deaths, emphasising the urgent need for effective intervention. So in the greater scheme of things, it is encouraging to know that the Health Ministry has developed the National HIV Surge Strategy for 2024 – 2027. Dr Shah said the strategy was a collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organisations, faith-based groups and the community at large. He said international technical organisations including WHO and UNAIDS were instrumental in this process. The National HIV Surge Strategy clearly aims to not only curb the rising numbers of new infections but also to mitigate the social stigma attached to HIV. This, without a doubt, often prevents people from seeking the care and treatment they need. So we say education and awareness campaigns are important in nurturing an environment where people feel safe to talk about their status and seek medical assistance.
