By September, YouGov found the most common descriptor among Brits for Starmer’s Labour was “dishonest” – a word chosen by 36% of the public. Pollsters at Ipsos then concluded in December that Starmer is more unpopular than any other UK prime minister has been during their first five months in No.10 since the 70s. So, what’s happened? Not only has Starmer unveiled a series of unpopular policies – hiking National Insurance tax for employers , reducing eligibility for winter fuel payments , and keeping the two-child benefit cap – but he’s been mired in political controversies , too. Perhaps the New Year will bring a spring to Keir Starmer’s step and he will make this a serious priority.” Advertisement There seems little doubt that this would only boost Starmer’s public image, according to CIPR’s own research. An Opinium poll in 2023 found almost half of its 2,100 respondents though lobbying rules are too weak, and close to three quarters said lobbying scandals make them less confident in the political system altogether. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A 93-year-old former Catholic priest sentenced to life in prison earlier this month for raping a teenage boy has died, Louisiana authorities and his lawyer confirmed Friday. Less than two weeks after being sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars, Lawrence Hecker died of natural causes at 3 a.m. Thursday at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center, according to Ken Pastorick, Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections communications director. Hecker had pleaded guilty to charges including first-degree rape and aggravated kidnapping shortly before jury selection for his long-delayed trial had been scheduled to begin earlier this month, with other victims prepared to testify against him. The survivor of the assault to which Hecker pleaded guilty had said that Hecker raped him after offering to instruct him in wrestling moves ahead of tryouts for a school team in the mid-1970s. “The only prayer I can come up with I hope he spends eternity in hell after God’s judgment of him,” the survivor said in a written statement provided by his attorney, Richard Trahant. “Now after his death I feel vindicated and free,” he said. The Associated Press does not identify those who say they have been sexually assaulted. Hecker’s trial had been delayed for months partly because of questions around his mental competency. Hecker had suffered from dementia, his lawyer Bobby Hjortsberg said. BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) — Incredible news for Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo and many cancer patients with the creation of a new cell and gene therapy unit at Roswell is being called a game-changer. 7 News Senior Reporter Eileen Buckle was there for the announcement to learn how this will provide cutting-edge technology to treat certain cancers. “A milestone moment for Roswell Park and New York State and actually the world,” announced Dr. Candace Johnson, president & CEO, Roswell Park. Roswell Park leaders and Governor Kathy Hochul announced the new $98 million Roswell Park Cell and Gene Therapy Center Monday, the largest in the nation. “What a great day for Buffalo,” declared Governor Hochul. “This scientific revolution is changing lives already." The state has funded $30 million toward this new center, and it is expected to generate an economic benefit to the region and initially create 61 new jobs. Right now, this state-of-the-art facility concentrates on the treatment of those with blood cancers. The CAR-T Cell therapy means your T-cells are removed from your body, sent into these labs, and genetically modified. “So, when they put them, transplant them back in me, they’re programmed really to attack any lymphoma cells,” explained Christopher Vogelsang, Roswell patient. Vogelsang of Buffalo has been a patient at Roswell for 15 years for treatment of lymphoma. But he underwent the new therapy and rang the famous Roswell bell because he is “cancer-free”.
