M atlock is an almost complete reimagining of the 1980s US legal series, though it does pay tribute to its origins in multiple ways. Those expecting another straightforward drama about lawyers will find that those expectations are largely met during the first episode. But be forewarned: eventually it begins to defy expectations. To say more would be to build anticipation unnecessarily – spoiler alert, Kathy Bates does not turn out to be an alien – but as you amble through familiar territory, you are actually wandering towards a more substantial, more intriguing proposition. It doesn’t reinvent the legal drama, but there’s enough twisting and turning to ensure that it isn’t quite all it appears to be. Even in its early legal-lite incarnation, though, it’s enjoyable enough. Bates plays Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a 75-year-old woman who says she has not worked as a lawyer since 1991. Family issues have compelled her to return to an industry that is much changed and, after 30 years away, there is a lot of new information to learn, despite her claims that she has “remained pretty nearly up to date”. When she inveigles her way into a job at a top law firm, she immediately proves she is much more of an asset than a burden. She is clever, quick, tenacious and has a habit of spotting details that the younger attorneys around her have let pass them by. Much of this is down to Matty’s age. As an older woman with grey hair and a rootsy southern accent, she is perpetually underestimated. “Nobody sees us coming,” she explains to her new employers. This means that she can eavesdrop, blag her way into buildings and win the confidence of strangers who are incapable of seeing her as a threat. Once again, this is a more layered premise than Bates’s harmless-old-lady shtick initially suggests it will be. She hands out boiled sweets, fakes emphysema and generally employs a mixed bag of tricks to get her own way – from bare-faced lying to the odd spark of genuine compassion. As the episodes progress, we are drip-fed more information about Matty’s life outside her rebound fling with law and her reasons for getting back to business. The show is a perfect vehicle for Bates, who is convincing in every iteration of her character’s complicated personality. With the exception of regular appearances in American Horror Story , Bates hasn’t in recent years been given the roles an actor of her calibre deserves. But this places her front and centre. She is supported by a capable cast, including Jason Ritter and Skye P Marshall as her divorcing superiors, Julian and Olympia, with Beau Bridges as the boss and owner of the law firm, who also happens to be Julian’s father. If, in the pilot, Bridges seems a little stilted (he looks as if he dropped in while everyone else was out for coffee), a quick search reveals that the part was recast. He loosens up considerably when he finally joins the fold. Like Elsbeth , another new-ish legal drama with bite, this follows a case-of-the-week format, but has a meatier overarching narrative arc in the background. The legal firm where Matty lands is taking more of an interest in social justice issues, not because it makes their dollar-grabbing consciences feel clearer, but because they suspect it will enhance the brand and thus allow them to rake in even more of the cash everyone keeps drooling over. (A small aside: watching Bates say: “I need to make it rain,” is a surprisingly stirring experience.) Perhaps it’s cultural, or maybe age-related, but watching this show makes me wonder if the original Matlock had more impact in the US than it did in the UK. This one leans on a certain familiarity with the parent series and uses it as a direct point of reference. When Matty introduces herself, she explains that her name is “like the old TV show” and she explains what that is to new clients and colleagues. It does, however, have the good grace to acknowledge that some of its younger characters don’t have a clue; they’ve never even heard of Cheers . Still, it doesn’t labour the generation gap, other than allowing Matty to use her invisibility as a superpower. Instead, it morphs into a mystery that touches on corporate greed and human suffering. Not what you’d expect from the pilot, but it is worth a closer look. Matlock airs on Sky Witness and is available on Now in the UK, and can be streamed on Paramount+ and Prime Video in Australiacasino live dealer

Ranganath on Sunday denied reports in some newspapers and on social media about his residence allegedly being in the buffer zone of Krishna Kant Park’s Peddacheruvu. He said said his house was almost a kilometre away from the park. In a press release, Ranganath stated his house is “about one kilometre from the lake’s bund, and nearly 380 metres from aerial distance.” He stated that his house is towards the lake’s bund area, and the irrigation department considers only 5-10 metres of land from the lake’s bund area as buffer zone. Through the press release, he stated “25 years ago, there was a lake in Krishna Kanth Park’s land called Peddacheruvu. In 1980, my father A.P.V. Subbayya constructed the house, and for 44 years we've been living in the same house. Even if the old lake’s buffer zone is considered, we’re well away from the area.” Explaining how FTL is determined towards the bund side, he said “For any lake, FTL and buffer zones are not fixed around the lake’s bund. But to accommodate for any repairs, a 5-10 metre buffer zone is allocated towards the bund side. And my home, even at an aerial distance, is nearly 380 metres away.” He requested media personnel not to spread misinformation about his house being in the buffer zone of the lake.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the BJP of fraudulently adding and deleting names from the voters list in Delhi ahead of the assembly elections. ET Year-end Special Reads What kept India's stock market investors on toes in 2024? India's car race: How far EVs went in 2024 Investing in 2025: Six wealth management trends to watch out for Terming it as " Operation Lotus ", AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said the BJP had officially sought the removal of names of over 11,000 votes in Shahdara assembly segment. "We won the assembly seat last time by a margin of 5,000 votes. If these 11,000 names were struck off, there would be no chance for a win this time. But they were caught red-handed and those names were not deleted. We are thankful to the Chief Election Officer for stopping this," he said. The BJP, however, accused the AAP of getting fake voters' names added to the list to bolster its support. State BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said the number of voters in Delhi saw a huge jump between the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and the assembly election next year. The same, he said, was observed after the 2019 general election. "Who got these new voters? There are no answers. They are trying to play the same game this time. BJP is saying those who don't live in Delhi anymore, those who have died, why should their names be on the list?" Kejriwal alleged that BJP had launched "Operation Lotus" in the New Delhi constituency, which he represents. "In 15 days, they have put in applications to delete the names of 5,000 voters and also applied for the addition of 7,500 names to the voter list. The total votes in my constituency are 1 lakh 6 thousand. What is the point of holding an election then? A game is playing out in the name of election," said Kejriwal. The AAP leader said a summary revision was carried out earlier and the Election Commission released a revised voter list on October 29. "If there is a 12% difference as the BJP claims, was the poll body's summary revision wrong?" he asked. Kejriwal said about 10 people had filed most of these deletion applications. "Who are these people? whose orders are they working on? Are they doing social work through door-to-door verification?" BY MELISSA GOLDIN Social media users are misrepresenting a report released Thursday by the Justice Department inspector general’s office, falsely claiming that it’s proof the FBI orchestrated the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The watchdog report examined a number of areas, including whether major intelligence failures preceded the riot and whether the FBI in some way provoked the violence. Claims spreading online focus on the report’s finding that 26 FBI informants were in Washington for election-related protests on Jan. 6, including three who had been tasked with traveling to the city to report on others who were potentially planning to attend the events. Although 17 of those informants either entered the Capitol or a restricted area around the building during the riot, none of the 26 total informants were authorized to do so by the bureau, according to the report. Nor were they authorized to otherwise break the law or encourage others to do so. Here’s a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: A December 2024 report released by the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General is proof that the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was a setup by the FBI. THE FACTS: That’s false. The report found that no undercover FBI employees were at the riot on Jan. 6 and that none of the bureau’s informants were authorized to participate. Informants, also known as confidential human sources, work with the FBI to provide information, but are not on the bureau’s payroll. Undercover agents are employed by the FBI. According to the report, 26 informants were in Washington on Jan. 6 in connection with the day’s events. FBI field offices only informed the Washington Field Office or FBI headquarters of five informants that were to be in the field on Jan. 6. Of the total 26 informants, four entered the Capitol during the riot and an additional 13 entered a restricted area around the Capitol. But none were authorized to do so by the FBI, nor were they given permission to break other laws or encourage others to do the same. The remaining nine informants did not engage in any illegal activities. None of the 17 informants who entered the Capitol or surrounding restricted area have been prosecuted, the report says. A footnote states that after reviewing a draft of the report, the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington said that it “generally has not charged those individuals whose only crime on January 6, 2021 was to enter restricted grounds surrounding the Capitol, which has resulted in the Office declining to charge hundreds of individuals; and we have treated the CHSs consistent with this approach.” The assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office’s counterterrorism division told the inspector general’s office that he “denied a request from an FBI office to have an undercover employee engage in investigative activity on January 6.” He, along with then-Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Steven D’Antuono, said that FBI policy prohibits undercover employees at First Amendment-protected events without investigative authority. Many social media users drew false conclusions from the report’s findings. “JANUARY 6th WAS A SETUP!” reads one X post that had received more than 11,400 likes and shares as of Friday. “New inspector general report shows that 26 FBI/DOJ confidential sources were in the crowd on January 6th, and some of them went into the Capitol and restricted areas. Is it a coincidence that Wray put in his resignation notice yesterday? TREASON!” The mention of Wray’s resignation refers to FBI Director Christopher Wray’s announcement Wednesday that he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January. Other users highlighted the fact that there were 26 FBI informants in Washington on Jan. 6, but omitted key information about the findings of the report. These claims echo a fringe conspiracy theory advanced by some Republicans in Congress that the FBI played a role in instigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters determined to overturn Republican Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden stormed the Capitol in a violent clash with police. The report knocks that theory down. Wray called such theories “ludicrous” at a congressional hearing last year. Asked for comment on the false claims spreading online, Stephanie Logan, a spokesperson for the inspector general’s office, pointed The Associated Press to a press release about the report. In addition to its findings about the the FBI’s involvement on Jan. 6, the report said that the FBI, in an action its now-deputy director described as a “basic step that was missed,” failed to canvass informants across all 56 of its field offices for any relevant intelligence ahead of time. That was a step, the report concluded, “that could have helped the FBI and its law enforcement partners with their preparations in advance of January 6.” However, it did credit the bureau for preparing for the possibility of violence and for trying to identify known “domestic terrorism subjects” who planned to come to Washington that day. The FBI said in a letter responding to the report that it accepts the inspection general’s recommendation “regarding potential process improvements for future events.”

Trump announces more nominations, including Devin Nunes, Troy Edgar and Bill WhiteHUNTINGTON, W.V. (AP) — Marshall has withdrawn from the Independence Bowl after a coaching change resulted in much of its roster jumping into the transfer portal. The Thundering Herd were slated to play Army on Dec. 28 in Shreveport, Louisiana. But the and announced on Saturday that the Bulldogs will take on the 19th-ranked Black Knights instead. Marshall said it pulled out “after falling below the roster minimum that was deemed medically safe.” The Herd (10-3) beat Louisiana-Lafayette 31-3 last weekend to win the for the first time. The program has won seven games in a row in the same season for the first time since 2020. “We apologize for the nature and timing of this announcement and for the turmoil it has brought to bowl season preparations for Army, the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, the American Athletic Conference and ESPN,” Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill said in a statement. Coach Charles Huff left Marshall for last Sunday, and Tony Gibson, the defensive coordinator at North Carolina State, less than an hour later. By Thursday, at least 25 Marshall players had entered the transfer portal. Gibson held a meeting shortly after arriving on campus in Huntington to introduce himself to the team. He followed that up with phone calls, text messages and more meetings Friday and Saturday. “Any time coaches leave to take other jobs, it is emotional,” Gibson said at a news conference Thursday. “And kids that are 18-to-22 years old are going to make emotional decisions instead of just breathing for a day or two.” It’s the first bowl for Louisiana Tech (5-7) since 2020. The Bulldogs have won two of their last three games, but they haven’t played since a 33-0 victory over Kennesaw State on Nov. 30. “We are excited to accept the opportunity to play in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl against a fantastic and storied program as Army,” Louisiana Tech athletic director Ryan Ivey said in a release. “I believe our football program is moving toward positive structure and the opportunity to play in this bowl adds to that momentum. We are looking forward to being in Shreveport for this matchup.” ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up . AP college football: and

Imran Khan defends wife after she said his problems began after Saudi visit drawing flak from Pak leaders

Kolkata, Dec 14 (IANS): West Bengal Minister for Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Firhad Hakim on Saturday compared the “majority” and “minority” communities in the country which created a controversy. Addressing a programme at the state-run auditorium in Kolkata, on Saturday, Hakim said that the current “minority” in West Bengal might become “majority” in the coming days. “In West Bengal, we are currently 33 per cent. Nationally we are 17 per cent. Hence we are addressed as minorities. But we do not consider ourselves as minorities. By the grace of God someday we might also become majorities. We will achieve this with the blessing of the almighty,” the minister said on Saturday. BJP Information Technology cell chief and the party central observer for West Bengal Amit Malviya said that after revealing his true intentions by describing non-Muslims as “unfortunate” and endorsing Dawat-e-Islam’s efforts to convert Hindus to Islam, Hakim has now claimed that West Bengal and the rest of India will soon have a Muslim majority. “Hakim envisions a future where Muslims will no longer rely on peaceful protests or marches but will take justice into their own hands—potentially hinting at Sharia law. This aligns with remarks from Trinamool Chopra MLA, who previously cited Islamic scriptures to justify an incident, where a woman was publicly whipped,” Malviya wrote on X. West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar also questioned why the other constituents of the opposition INDIA Bloc are silent and refraining from condemning such a statement by Firhad Hakim. “This is not just a hate speech. This is a blueprint for creating a Bangladesh-like situation in India,” said Majumdar. Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh, while speaking to IANS, refrained from making any comment on this issue saying that he is not aware of the contest in which Hakim said these. “It will be unfair to isolate a particular portion of the speech and highlight it,” Ghosh said.Maschmeyer's 34 saves carry Ottawa Charge past New York Sirens, 3-1
