President Biden on Sunday issued a sweeping pardon of his son Hunter, who was convicted earlier this year on federal gun and drug charges, and pleaded guilty to tax charges in California. The presidential pardoning process is one that has long courted controversy, especially since many presidents issue pardons when they are leaving the White House. One of the most famous —and controversial— pardons in history happened less than one month into President Gerald Ford's term. On Sept. 8, 1974, Ford announced from the Oval Office that he would "grant a full, free and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed." Ford's own press secretary resigned over the pardon, and Ford's approval rating dropped 20 points over the following days. His approval rating never recovered and he went on to lose the 1976 presidential election. What is a presidential pardon? Presidents are granted the authority to issue pardons under Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution . The Constitution's framers were heavily influenced by the English legal tradition of pardon, which dates back to the 7th century, and Alexander Hamilton introduced the concept of the presidential pardon at the Constitutional Convention. Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution declares: "The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment." There are four different types of clemency that fall under the president's pardoning power: pardon, amnesty, commutation and reprieve. As outlined by the White House, a pardon releases a person from punishment and restores all civil liberties; amnesty is the same as the pardon but is extended to an entire class of individuals; commutation reduces the sentence imposed by a federal court, and a reprieve delays the imposition of a sentence or punishment. Pardons, however, may not be issued in cases of impeachment or if it is an "offense against the United States," such as treason. The Office of the Pardon Attorney at the Department of Justice issues guidelines for the application of clemency, but presidents do not need to follow them. To be pardoned, a person must have been convicted in a United States District Court, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, or a military court-martial — so a president cannot issue a pardon for a state conviction. What does a pardon mean for the pardoned person? A pardon can help eliminate some of the consequences of conviction and restore a person's civil rights. According to the Justice Department, the offense is not removed from a person's criminal record when they are pardoned but instead the conviction and the pardon both appear on the record. But the pardon can be helpful in obtaining licenses, bonding or employment. Who has Biden pardoned while in office? Hunter Biden is the 26th person Mr. Biden has pardoned so far. Most pardons relate to drug offenses, a practice started by former President Barack Obama. In September 2023, Mr. Biden granted clemency for three Iranians who were accused of moving $6 billion in a restricted Iranian account as part of a prisoner swap. At this point in President-elect Donald Trump's first term, he had pardoned 29 people. Who did Trump pardon during his first term? Trump issued a slew of pardons on Jan. 19, 2021, shortly before he left office. Trump pardoned 74 people and commuted the sentences of another 70. Among those pardoned were Steve Bannon , GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy, Albert J. Pirro and rapper Lil Wayne. Prior to those pardons, Trump pardoned more than 30 people in December 2020, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner's father, Charles Kushner, who had been convicted of witness tampering, tax evasion and illegal campaign contributions in 2005. Ahead of his second term, Trump has nominated Charles Kushner to be the ambassador to France. Earlier in his term, Trump pardoned Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio , Dinesh D'Souza , his first national security adviser Michael Flynn , former George W. Bush aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and Oregon ranchers Dwight L. Hammond and Steve D. Hammond. In 2020, Trump issued a full pardon for Alice Marie Johnson, whose sentence he had commuted in 2018 after lobbying from Kim Kardashian. Johnson is a great-grandmother who had served 22 years in federal prison for what was a first-time criminal offense, which had come to Kardashian's attention. In total over four years in office, Trump issued 237 acts of clemency, including 143 pardons and 94 commutations. The only presidents since 1900 who issued fewer acts of clemency were George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, according to the Pew Research Center . Who did Obama pardon while in office? Obama issued 212 pardons and 1,715 commutations while in office, including for 568 people who were serving life sentences. In 2014, Obama launched the Clemency Initiative , which allowed federal prisoners to apply for leniency, especially those serving for nonviolent drug offenses. In the Obama White House archives , his administration touts that those whose sentences were commuted were "incarcerated under outdated and unduly harsh sentencing laws." Although Obama encouraged prisoners to apply for leniency under the Clemency Initiative, a report by the Justice Department Inspector General in 2018 found that initiative was poorly planned and not implemented properly, while also suffering from poor communication and bureaucratic feuds. "We found that the Department did not effectively plan, implement, or manage the Initiative at the outset," Inspector General Michael Horowitz wrote in the report. Which president has pardoned the most people in history? President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who served 13 years in office, issued the most pardons: 3,687. Have past presidents pardoned family members? Although Mr. Biden is the first president to pardon his son, he is not the first to pardon a family member. Former President Bill Clinton pardoned his brother Roger Clinton and Trump pardoned Charles Kushner, his son-in-law's father. Abraham Lincoln, meanwhile, pardoned his sister-in-law , Emilie Todd Helm, who was the widow of a Confederate general, under the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. Can a president issue a preemptive pardon? Ford's infamous pardon of Nixon was a preemptive pardon, since Nixon had not been charged with a crime. Former President Jimmy Carter also issued preemptive pardons for Vietnam draft evaders, as did Lincoln in the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction, which allowed for former Confederates to be pardoned if they took an oath to the U.S. President George H.W. Bush also pardoned his secretary of defense, Caspar Weinberger, along with five others, for his alleged role in the Iran-Contra scandal after he was indicted but before his trial. Mr. Biden's pardon of Hunter covers any crimes Hunter Biden may have committed from Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 1, 2024, even if he has not yet been charged. Hunter Biden's first plea agreement in Delaware fell apart because his lawyers sought full immunity from future prosecution. Can another president undo a previous presidential pardon? The pardon language in Article II of the Constitution does not include any language about revoking pardons, although only a few presidents have exercised that power. On President Andrew Johnson's last day in office, he issued several pardons — three of which President Ulysses S. Grant reversed on his first day by calling back the U.S. Marshal so they were never delivered. A fourth was allowed to stand since it had been delivered. According to Washington Monthly , an 1868 textbook by Supreme Court Associate Justice Joseph Story on the Constitution says a presidential pardon can be revoked if the president was impeached. In recent history, both Clinton and Trump have been impeached — although their pardons did stand after their terms. Former President George W. Bush, meanwhile, revoked one of his own pardons . In December 2008, shortly before leaving office, Bush pardoned 19 people, including Isaac Robert Toussie of Brooklyn, N.Y., who had been convicted of making false statements to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and of mail fraud. One day later, Bush reversed the decision, with White House press secretary Dana Perino citing "information that has subsequently come to light," including on the extent and nature of Toussie's prior criminal offenses. She also said that neither the White House counsel's office nor the president had been aware of a political contribution by Toussie's father that "might create an appearance of impropriety." Alberta to end use of photo radar on provincial highways as of April 1NEW YORK (AP) — Police don't know who he is, where he is, or why he did it. As the frustrating search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer got underway for a fifth day Sunday, investigators reckoned with a tantalizing contradiction: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. One conclusion they are confident of, however: It was a targeted attack , not a random one. They know he ambushed Thompson at 6:44 a.m. Wednesday as the executive arrived at the Hilton for his company’s annual investor conference, using a 9 mm pistol that resembled the guns farmers use to put down animals without causing a loud noise. They know ammunition found near Thompson’s body bore the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose,” mimicking a phrase used by insurance industry critics . The fact that the shooter knew UnitedHealthcare group was holding a conference at the hotel and what route Thompson might take to get there suggested that he could possibly be a disgruntled employee or client, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Over the weekend, police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. Officers have been scouring the park for days for any possible clues and found his backpack there Friday. They didn’t immediately reveal what, if anything, it contained but said it would be tested and analyzed. Early Sunday afternoon, police declined to comment on the contents of the backpack, or on the results of the search in the pond, saying no updates were planned. The bag’s apparent manufacturer did not immediately respond to questions from The Associated Press. Investigators have urged patience, saying the process of logging evidence that stands up in court isn’t as quick as it looks like on TV . Hundreds of detectives are combing through video recordings and social media, vetting tips from the public and interviewing people who might have information, including Thompson’s family and coworkers and the shooter’s randomly assigned roommates at the Manhattan hostel where he stayed. Investigators caught a break when they came across security camera images of an unguarded moment at the hostel in which he briefly showed his face. Retracing the gunman’s steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later, Kenny said. With the high-profile search expanding across state lines, the FBI announced late Friday that it was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, adding to a reward of up to $10,000 that the NYPD has offered. Police say they believe the suspect acted alone. Police distributed the images to news outlets and on social media but so far haven’t been able to ID him using facial recognition — possibly because of the angle of the images or limitations on how the NYPD is allowed to use that technology, Kenny said. Late Saturday, police released two additional photos of the suspected shooter that appeared to be from a camera mounted inside a taxi. The first shows him outside the vehicle and the second shows him looking through the partition between the back seat and the front of the cab. In both, his face is partially obscured by a blue, medical-style mask.
Former New Zealand prime minister John Key has three white rabbits painted on his helicopter, a nod to his "massively superstitious" habit of repeating "white rabbits" three times at the start of every month. Tennis champion Rafael Nadal performs the same sequence of actions (shirt-tug, hair-tuck, face-wipe) before every serve. Taylor Swift paints '13' on her hand for good luck before a show, while Rihanna won't allow anything yellow in her dressing room. Perhaps you, too, are superstitious. Maybe you have a lucky number, avoid black cats, or shudder at the thought of opening an umbrella indoors. Even if you don't consider yourself superstitious, little things like saying "bless you" after a sneeze, knocking on wood or crossing your fingers are all examples of behaviours with superstitious origins. We humans are particularly susceptible to superstitions. But why are we so quick to develop superstitious behaviours, and do we really believe they can bring good or bad luck? In our new research , we set out to answer this question. We tested whether people could tell the difference between outcomes they caused and outcomes they didn't cause, and this told us something about the cognitive roots of human superstition. Learning about cause and effect From as early as four months, infants learn their actions produce outcomes - kicking their legs shakes the crib, shaking a rattle makes an interesting noise, dropping a toy on the floor means mum or dad picks it up. As we grow older, we develop a more sophisticated understanding of cause-and-effect relationships, asking "why?" questions about the world around us. This sensitivity to causes and effects sets the stage for important developmental milestones, like imaginative play, planning actions to achieve a goal, predicting others' intentions, anticipating and regulating emotions, and cooperating with others. The ability to learn about relationships between causes and effects is a defining feature of human cognition. But how does this square with our superstitious tendencies? When cause and effect is an illusion We learn about causes and effects from experience. When our behaviour is followed by an outcome, we learn about the relationship between our action and that outcome. The more often this action-outcome pairing occurs, the stronger the perceived link between them. This is why we repeat behaviours that produce rewarding outcomes, and avoid repeating behaviours that produce punishing ones. But what happens if an outcome follows our actions by coincidence? If I wear my lucky socks and my favourite sports team wins, this is probably just a coincidence (it's unlikely my sock-wearing actually caused the win). But if this happens a few times, I may develop a superstition about my lucky socks. This suggests superstitious behaviour arises because we aren't particularly good at discerning when our actions cause an outcome, versus when our actions just coincide with (but do not cause) an outcome. This is a common explanation for superstition - but does it have any weight? Testing our ability to detect causality We can test what underpins superstitious behaviour by simply asking people "who caused that outcome?". Getting it right would suggest we can discern action-outcome relationships (and therefore that there must be some other explanation for superstitious behaviour). Our research did exactly that. We asked whether people could tell when their actions did or didn't cause an outcome. We recruited 371 undergraduate students from a large New Zealand university, who participated in one experimental session for a course credit. Participants played a game where a positive outcome (winning) or a negative outcome (losing) occurred either after their own action (clicking a button), or independently of their action. Importantly, participants weren't given any information beforehand about the type of outcome or whether it would depend on their behaviour. This meant they had to rely on what they actually experienced during the game, and we could test their ability to judge whether they had caused the outcome. This also meant participants' preexisting superstitions and other characteristics (such as age) didn't affect our results. Their behaviour during the task was representative of human behaviour more generally. Participants' scores indicated they often got it right: in about 80% of trials, they knew when they'd caused the outcome, and when they hadn't. A built-in bias The distinction between causing and not causing the outcomes was sometimes very subtle. This made it more difficult for participants to tell what had occurred. When they weren't sure, participants defaulted to saying "I caused it", even if they actually hadn't. They were biased to attribute outcomes to their own actions, particularly after winning outcomes. This bias may be the key to explaining why we're superstitious: something I did caused something to happen, even if I can't be sure what it was. And it suggests knowing superstitions aren't real may not actually stop us from behaving superstitiously. On the surface, this may not make sense - why expend energy doing things we know don't affect outcomes? But if we look deeper, this bias serves an important purpose, because it helps ensure we don't miss any potential connections between our actions and their outcomes. In other words, it's better to be safe than sorry. Research shows that engaging in superstitious behaviour can also increase confidence in our abilities to achieve a goal, improve performance in different tasks, and alleviate anxiety by giving us a sense of control. The tendency to attribute positive outcomes to our actions (as we found) can boost self-esteem and psychological wellbeing. So, perhaps we'd all benefit by indulging in a little superstitious behaviour. Touch wood.WAYNE, Pa., Dec. 03, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Aclaris Therapeutics, Inc. The 2024 Inducement Plan is used exclusively for the grant of equity awards to individuals who were not previously an employee or non-employee director of Aclaris (or following a bona fide period of non-employment), as an inducement material to such individuals' entering into employment with Aclaris, pursuant to Rule 5635(c)(4) of the NASDAQ Listing Rules. The options have an exercise price of $3.96 per share, which is equal to the closing price of Aclaris' common stock on December 2, 2024. Each option and restricted stock unit award will vest, and become exercisable (as applicable), as to twenty-five percent of the shares on each of the first, second, third, and fourth anniversaries of the recipient's start date, subject to each such employee's continued employment with Aclaris on such vesting dates. The options and restricted stock unit awards are subject to the terms and conditions of Aclaris' 2024 Inducement Plan, and the terms and conditions of a stock option agreement or restricted stock unit award agreement, as applicable, covering the grant. General manager Patrik Allvin issued a statement Tuesday saying Hronek underwent a successful procedure for the undisclosed ailment and is expected to miss about eight weeks. He says the 27-year-old Czech blueliner will not require surgery for an upper-body injury. Hronek hasn't played since going into the endboards hard late in Vancouver's 5-4 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh last Wednesday. He's been paired with captain Quinn Hughes for much of the season and registered eight points (one goal, eight assists) in 21 games. The Canucks (13-7-3) have dealt with a litany of notable absences this season, including all-star goalie Thatcher Demko, who remains sidelined with a knee injury, and star centre J.T. Miller, who's on an indefinite leave for personal reasons. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 3, 2024. The Canadian PressThe Detroit Lions have equaled the franchise record for most consecutive victories and stand alone atop the NFC standings. They still have plenty of obstacles to clear to remain at that perch. Even the NFC North remains up for grabs and they'll try to create a little more separation when they host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. The Lions (11-1), who have won 10 straight, haven't been able to shake free from Minnesota (10-2) or Green Bay (9-3). Detroit will host Minnesota, which has won five straight, in the regular-season finale next month. The Packers have remained in contention by winning seven of their last eight, with the only loss coming at the hands of the Lions. Detroit opened up a 21-point lead early in the third quarter and held on for a 24-14 victory. Lions coach Dan Campbell says the fun really begins now. "The best part of all of this -- we're in playoff football right now, that's where we're at," he said. "We're in December, and our schedule says that. Man, we play tough opponent after tough opponent -- we've got plenty coming up. So, man, this is the type of stuff that you live for and it's also the type of stuff that gets you ready for the tournament. "So, yeah, we're a resilient bunch and nothing's going to change that. We've just got to worry about the one in front of us." Detroit is coming off a 23-20 win over Chicago on Thanksgiving Day in which it nearly blew a 16-point lead. The Bears' poor clock management cost them an opportunity to send the game into overtime and led to coach Matt Eberflus' firing. The Lions have been hit with a wave of injuries, particularly on the defensive side. They signed four players over the past week to fortify their depth. "I know the elephant in the room is all the injuries that have happened with us on the defensive side," defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn said. "Our personnel staff does a really good job of acquiring players that fit exactly who we are. I would say this, it's not the playbook that's the most important thing for these guys to come in and learn. It's the style of play that we have and that's easy to learn." Jared Goff has thrown for six touchdowns and zero interceptions in the past three games after tossing five picks against the Houston Texans on Nov. 10. The Packers also played on Thanksgiving, defeating Miami 30-17. Green Bay opened up a 24-3 halftime lead as Jordan Love threw two touchdown passes to Jayden Reed. Now the Packers face a Detroit team that has defeated them in five of the last six meetings. "With most good teams, they play the game the right way," Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said. "Certainly, Detroit's been doing that for a couple years now. That's who they are and that's who we are as well. It should be a great game on Thursday night." The Packers might have to win via a shootout, considering the Lions are averaging a league-best 31.9 points per game (Green Bay ranks eighth at 26.5). Stopping the running game will be key, according to LaFleur. "They're two very dynamic backs. (David) Montgomery, he's going to beat you up physically and the other guy (Jahmyr Gibbs), you've got to try to corral because he can take it the distance," he said. "Jared (Goff) is playing at an MVP level, so they've got a really potent offense." Lions offensive tackle Taylor Decker (knee) and three defensive linemen -- DJ Reader (shoulder), Josh Paschal (knee) and Levi Onwezurike (hamstring) -- didn't practice on Tuesday. Offensive guard Elgton Jenkins (knee), Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring) and cornerback Corey Ballentine (knee) missed the Packers' practice. --Field Level Media
EQUITY and Social Justice Minister Joachim Henry provided a robust update last week on the government’s comprehensive stimulus programme through the STEP project, which is designed to enable individuals to earn a sustainable income. Henry confirmed that there has been a significant escalation in the cleanup of roads and their surroundings across communities’ island-wide. “This Stimulus Programme is not merely about cutting grass along the roadside; it involves a thorough examination of our environment, including addressing overhead trees that obstruct visibility for drivers,” he stated. A substantial amount of this vital work is being executed in the Morne Fortune area on the outskirts of Castries, as well as along the southern belt of the island. “There is a lot happening in terms of stimulus activities aimed at maintaining a clean environment and fostering Saint Lucians’ appreciation of their surroundings,” Henry asserted. Earlier this month, the government officially launched the STEP programme, known as the Christmas Stimulus Programme, which is directly focused on supporting social development initiatives. The first phase of this programme was announced by the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF), marking its launch for 2024. The STEP programme in Saint Lucia-Strengthening the Economy Through Stimulus and Employment-delivers crucial short-term employment opportunities for citizens and actively stimulates local economic activity. – Job Creation: It provides immediate temporary jobs for unemployed individuals, particularly in response to economic disruptions or crises; – Community Development: Funded projects under STEP enhance local neighborhoods through infrastructure improvements and community clean-ups; – Social Support: By creating job opportunities, the program supports families during challenging economic times, thereby strengthening community resilience. – Economic Stimulus: By offering jobs and skills training, the program is designed to invigorate the local economy and empower individuals to achieve financial independence. Overall, the STEP program is determined to empower individuals and promote sustainable economic growth in Saint Lucia. Individuals interested in applying for the Skills Training Empowerment Programme (STEP) in Saint Lucia can typically follow these steps: Check Eligibility: Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements. Generally, this includes being a resident of Saint Lucia and experiencing unemployment or underemployment. Certain groups may be prioritized. Visit Official Websites: Check the official websites of the Saint Lucia government or the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations, and Sustainable Development for announcements and detailed information about the program. Gather Necessary Documents: Prepare the required documents, which may include identification, proof of residence, and previous employment records. Complete the Application Form: Fill out an application form that typically requires personal details, educational background, and employment history. Submit Supporting Documents: Along with your application, you may need to provide identification, proof of residency, and any other required documentation. Be sure to check for any specific eligibility criteria and recent updates regarding the application process.

As the future of warfare pivots towards artificial intelligence, Ukraine is sitting on a valuable resource: millions of hours of footage from drones which can be used to train AI models to make decisions on the battlefield. or signup to continue reading AI has been deployed by both sides on the battlefield during Russia's invasion of Ukraine to identify targets, scanning images far quicker than a human can. Oleksandr Dmitriev, founder of OCHI, a non-profit Ukrainian digital system that centralises and analyses video feeds from over 15,000 drone crews working on the front lines, told Reuters his system had collected two million hours, or 228 years, of battlefield video from drones since 2022. That will provide vital data for AI to learn from. "This is food for the AI: If you want to teach an AI, you give it 2 million hours (of video), it will become something supernatural," he said. According to Dmitriev, the footage can be used to train AI models in combat tactics, spotting targets and assessing the effectiveness of weapons systems. "It is essentially experience which can be turned into mathematics," he said, adding that an AI program can study the trajectories and angles at which weapons are most effective. The system was originally made in 2022 to give military commanders an overview of their areas of the battlefield by showing them drone footage from all nearby crews side by side on one screen. After the system was rolled out, the team running it realised that video being sent back by drones could prove useful as a record of the war – so they began to store it. On average, Dmitriev said five or six terabytes of new data were added every day from the fighting. Dmitriev said he was talking with representatives from some of Ukraine's foreign allies that had expressed interest in his OCHI system, but declined to provide details. Samuel Bendett, adjunct senior fellow at the US-based Centre for a New American Security, said such a vast pool of data would be extremely valuable in teaching AI systems to identify what exactly they are seeing, and what steps they should take. "Humans can do this intuitively, but machines cannot, and they have to be trained on what is or isn't a road, or a natural obstacle, or an ambush," he said. Kateryna Bondar, a fellow at Wadhwani AI centre at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, said the size of the data set and the image quality were important, as AI models learned to recognise targets based on shapes and colours. Bondar said that the dataset was valuable in the context of training to fight Russia. However, she said US officials and drone makers prefer a dataset that trains AI systems to operate in the Pacific against a potential Chinese adversary. "(They want) systems ready and able to fight against China because that's the main priority for the US right now, rather than getting a lot of footage of Ukrainian fields and forests." Ukraine also has another system, called Avengers, developed by its defence ministry, which centralises and collects video from drones and CCTV. The ministry declined to provide information about this system. However, it has previously said that Avengers spots 12,000 Russian pieces of equipment a week using AI identification tools. Thousands of drones are already using AI systems to fly themselves into targets without human piloting, and Ukraine is using AI technologies to help demine its territory. Ukrainian companies are developing drone swarms, where a computer system will be able to execute commands for an interlinked cloud of dozens of drones. Russia has also touted its use of battlefield AI, most notably for target recognition in Lancet strike drones, which have proved lethal against Ukrainian armoured vehicles. AdvertisementThe smartphone battleground is heating up as OnePlus prepares to launch its highly anticipated OnePlus 13 and 13R models in January. This strategic move positions the OnePlus 13 series as a direct competitor to Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S25 lineup, expected to launch around the same time. OnePlus, known for its “flagship killer” devices offering top-tier specs at competitive prices, is aiming to disrupt Samsung’s dominance in the Android flagship market. The OnePlus 13 and 13R will be officially unveiled at the “Winter Launch Event” on January 7th, 2025, at 9 PM IST. The event will be livestreamed globally, allowing tech enthusiasts worldwide to witness the unveiling of these new contenders. OnePlus is clearly aiming to steal Samsung’s thunder by launching its flagships first, potentially swaying consumer decisions before the Galaxy S25 series even hits the shelves. This aggressive strategy underscores OnePlus’s ambition to capture a larger share of the premium smartphone market. OnePlus 13: A Flagship with Fierce Specs The OnePlus 13 is poised to be a true flagship contender. It will be powered by the cutting-edge Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, promising blazing-fast performance and enhanced power efficiency. The device boasts a stunning display with a 2K resolution, a dynamic 1-120Hz variable refresh rate for smooth scrolling and gaming, and an impressive peak brightness of 4500 nits for excellent outdoor visibility. Furthermore, the OnePlus 13 is the first in the series to feature both IP68 and IP69 water and dust resistance ratings, addressing a long-standing request from OnePlus fans. This added durability makes the OnePlus 13 a more robust and versatile device, capable of withstanding the elements. Key features of the OnePlus 13: OnePlus 13R: A Powerful and Affordable Alternative While the OnePlus 13 aims for the top spot, the OnePlus 13R offers a compelling alternative for those seeking flagship-level performance at a more accessible price point. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, the 13R is no slouch when it comes to performance. It also features a generous 6,200 mAh battery with 100W wired charging support, ensuring long-lasting usage and rapid charging speeds. The OnePlus 13R is expected to be priced around ₹40,000 in India, based on the pricing of its predecessor. This competitive pricing strategy could make the 13R a very attractive option for consumers looking for a value-packed flagship experience. Key features of the OnePlus 13R: A Direct Challenge to Samsung The January launch date sets the stage for a head-to-head battle between OnePlus and Samsung. Both brands are known for their premium Android smartphones, and the near-simultaneous release of their flagship devices will undoubtedly create intense competition. Samsung has traditionally held a strong position in the flagship market, but OnePlus has been steadily gaining ground with its performance-focused devices and competitive pricing. The OnePlus 13 series, with its impressive specs and aggressive launch strategy, could pose a serious threat to Samsung’s dominance. My Take on the OnePlus vs. Samsung Rivalry Having used both OnePlus and Samsung phones in the past, I’ve always appreciated OnePlus’s commitment to providing a fast and smooth user experience. Their OxygenOS, known for its clean and bloatware-free interface, has been a personal favorite. However, Samsung has made significant strides in recent years with its One UI, which now offers a similarly refined and user-friendly experience. The camera department has traditionally been an area where Samsung has held an edge. However, OnePlus’s partnership with Hasselblad has resulted in significant improvements in their camera systems. I’m eager to see how the OnePlus 13’s Hasselblad-tuned cameras stack up against the Galaxy S25’s camera prowess. Ultimately, the choice between OnePlus and Samsung will likely come down to individual preferences and priorities. Those seeking the absolute best performance and latest technology might lean towards the OnePlus 13, while those who value a more comprehensive ecosystem and brand recognition might favor Samsung. The Battle for the Flagship Crown The launch of the OnePlus 13 and 13R in January is shaping up to be a pivotal moment in the smartphone world. OnePlus is clearly aiming to disrupt the status quo and challenge Samsung’s reign in the Android flagship market. With its impressive specs, aggressive pricing, and strategic launch date, the OnePlus 13 series has the potential to shake things up and capture the attention of consumers worldwide. It will be fascinating to witness how this battle unfolds in the coming months. Will OnePlus succeed in stealing Samsung’s thunder? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: consumers will be the ultimate winners, with more choices and greater innovation in the ever-evolving world of smartphones.LG's CineBeam Q projector is a compact, premium 4K projector on sale right now for $799 ($500 off the regular price). Its auto keystone screen adjustment, vivid projection, and portability make it a top-tier projector. However, the CineBeam Q is expensive and requires an external speaker to really feel cinematic. Projectors are cool; they can take whatever media you want and blow it up tenfold, making screens out of blank walls and transforming the most mundane of spaces into mini theaters. The problem is that these devices are usually cumbersome, unportable, loud, fragile, and finicky. LG CineBeam Q easily solves all those problems as a three-pound, portable projector capable of screening in 4K at an image size of up to 120 inches. The Q has a laser RGB light source (instead of the traditional lamp projectors) that creates a vibrant, robust image across a wider spectrum of color, turning any wall that's big enough into a cinematic movie screen or gaming display. Also: The best Black Friday deals: Live updates LG CineBeam Q Projector The CineBeam Q is an ultra-portable 4K projector with a responsive auto-adjusting screen. Focusing and image arrangement -- typically a lengthy process of trial and error with other projectors -- is a snap with the Q, which has keystone screen adjustment technology that automatically senses and adjusts the picture to whatever space you're projecting on. Achieving the right image is as easy as adjusting the rotating kickstand to the proper height, allowing projection at any angle, including straight up, if you want to project onto the ceiling (which is awesome when you're lying down). The maximum size "screen" you can achieve on the CineBeam Q is about 120 inches and requires a distance of about 12 feet away from the wall or projector screen to get that big. On the flip side, the smallest the image can go is around a 50-inch projection, at about five feet distance. Anything closer or further than these extremes will see a drop-off in image quality and focus. The CineBeam Q operates much like an LG smart TV when you fire it up. LG's webOS 6 pulls up an app menu where you can load different streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube, as well as use AirPlay to connect directly to your mobile device. You can also plug in an Apple TV or Chromecast with Google TV. Also: I tested the world's smallest projector with Google TV, and it blew me away On the back is one HDMI port, one USB-C port, and a power port, allowing for physical connections to other devices such as a gaming console or soundbar . Speaking of sound, you will definitely want to consider getting an accompanying soundbar or Bluetooth speaker to pair up with the Q, as its internal three-watt speakers don't do much to convey a theatrical experience. Also like a smart TV, there are a number of preset image profiles you can play with to get the optimal color and image, and it's worth cycling through these to see if you're getting the best possible image. When I was testing, setting it to 'Vivid' resulted in a significantly better image. The thing with projectors is that they're not TVs ; they don't have their own light source illuminating each pixel on the screen, so to get the optimal image quality, you really need to be in a dark space. Under these optimal lighting conditions, the Q looks fantastic, projecting at 500 ANSI lumens of brightness: the picture is vibrant, bright, and visibly 4K with a high degree of contrast. Also: I replaced my TV with this long-throw projector and it's absolutely worth it - especially for $200 off But if you're in a space with any amount of ambient light, the image quality degrades quickly. Those vibrant, saturated colors quickly become washed out and cloudy. Again, this isn't necessarily an issue with the Q specifically, but with all projectors, and should be considered as part of their limitations. While the Q isn't designed to replace your TV full-time, its flexibility and portability make it best for certain use cases, like movie nights. The experiential device transforms any wall big enough into a theater screen in a hardware package that screams premium. There are other portable projectors out there, such as Samsung's Freestyle 2 , which are smaller and less expensive, but they don't provide quite the same visual quality as the Q. The use cases for this device are varied, and may not be for everyone. Kids will absolutely go crazy for the Q, and I can see this being used in a kids' room as part of a movie night or fort-building adventure. Likewise, movie buffs who want to have a nighttime screening in the backyard or on a rooftop will love the portability and easy adjustment built into this projector. The only caveat is that the projector is not battery powered and can only be taken as far as its cord will go. This is perhaps one of the more limiting traits of the projector, as it's portable enough to go anywhere, but in practice is actually tethered to the power outlet. The device's power cord is also quite short, and I can't see this being used without an extension cord if you're going for that massive cinematic screen, especially if you're taking it outside. ZDNET's buying advice The CineBeam Q is a premium device that looks and feels high-end. Even when not in use, it's unique and well-designed enough to add personality to a desk or bookshelf. In terms of usability, it couldn't be easier: anyone who's navigated a smart TV menu will be able to fire it up, and the auto-adjustment technology makes focus and image arrangement seamless. In order to achieve a cinematic experience (and honestly, even if you're using it for gaming), you'll want to complete the package with a soundbar or Bluetooth speaker, but that's something that isn't too big of a deal: its small, compact form factor is the tradeoff for the lack of powerful sound. The price point does represent its niche market, but if you're looking for a top-tier projector that brings fantastic image quality, the CineBeam Q is where it's at. The fact that it's $500 off right now makes this deal impossible to overlook. What are the best Black Friday 2024 deals? Franklin Resources Inc. Raises Holdings in Arch Resources, Inc. (NYSE:ARCH)Big Ten slate features Indiana-Ohio State showdown and Penn State-Minnesota matchup Things to watch this week in the Big Ten Conference: No. 5 Indiana (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten, No. 5 CFP ) at No. 2 Ohio State (9-1, 6-1, No. 2 CFP), Saturday, noon ET (Fox) This marks the 98th matchup between these two teams, but it's only the fourth time both teams have been ranked. Although Indiana is unbeaten, its soft schedule means the Hoosiers aren't assured of making the 12-team field if they lose this game. The only team with a winning record that Indiana has beaten is Washington (6-5). Ohio State needs a win to have a realistic shot at a rematch with top-ranked Oregon in the Big Ten championship game. Ohio State has beaten Indiana 28 straight times since the Hoosiers posted back-to-back victories in 1987-88. No. 4 Penn State (9-1, 6-1, No. 4 CFP) at Minnesota (6-4, 4-3), Saturday, 3:30 p.m. (CBS) This is likely Penn State's biggest obstacle on its way to a potential playoff berth. The Nittany Lions' lone remaining regular-season game is a Nov. 30 home matchup with Maryland (4-6, 1-6). Minnesota has had an extra week to prepare this game since its 26-19 loss at Rutgers on Nov. 9, which snapped a four-game winning streak. Penn State and Minnesota have split their last four meetings, with the home team winning each time. Penn State DE Abdul Carter has multiple tackles for loss in each of his last three games. He ranks second among all Bowl Subdivision players in tackles for loss (17 1⁄2). Southern California RB Woody Marks rushed for a career-high 146 yards in a 28-20 win over Nebraska. Marks has six 100-yard rushing performances this season. Rutgers RB Kyle Monangai is the first Scarlet Knight to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons since Ray Rice did it three straight years from 2005-07. Monangai has run for 1,028 yards this season and rushed for 1,262 yards last year. Oregon OLB Matayo Uiagalelei recorded a sack and had a game-clinching interception as the top-ranked Ducks won 16-13 at Wisconsin last week. He has 8 1⁄2 sacks this season to rank second in the Big Ten. Four of the top seven Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks in passer rating are from the Big Ten. Indiana's Kurtis Rourke is second, Ohio State's Will Howard is third, Penn State's Drew Allar is fifth and Oregon's Dillon Gabriel is seventh. ... Illinois QB Luke Altmyer has thrown 18 touchdown passes with only three interceptions. The only Power Four quarterback with a better touchdown/interception ratio while throwing at least 10 touchdown passes is Clemson's Cade Klubnik, who has 26 touchdowns and four interceptions. ... Rutgers' three Big Ten wins matches its largest total since joining the league in 2014. Rutgers also had three conference wins in 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2023. A victory Saturday over No. 24 Illinois would give Rutgers three straight Big Ten wins for the first time. ... Washington's 31-19 win over UCLA was its 20th straight home victory, representing its second-longest such streak in school history. The Huskies won 45 straight home games from 1908-17. ... Wisconsin heads to Nebraska this week having won its last 10 matchups with the Cornhuskers. Penn State justifiably is favored on the road against Minnesota, but Bet MGM's 12 1⁄2-point spread seems way too big. Expect this game to have a single-digit margin. VANCOUVER — Participation in hockey in British Columbia was struggling in 2021 — the pandemic had dealt a heavy blow to player registrations, and numbers had already been flagging before COVID-19 arrived. “I think there were a lot of families that were impacted at that time,” said Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association president Melanie Earland, whose group governs minor hockey in B.C.’s Lower Mainland, including Metro Vancouver. “The world changed," she said. Player participation had peaked in 2016-2017 with more than 62,000 registrations, Hockey Canada statistics for B.C. show, falling under 58,000 just before the pandemic began in 2020, then plummeting to 39,056 that season. Rising costs and growing competition from other sports had also been chipping away at youth hockey participation. But that is now changing, with registration for this season in B.C. surging past the 63,000 mark, a rebound that follows a concerted effort to make the game more accessible, especially to groups not traditionally linked to the sport such as new Canadians and Indigenous communities. Tom Oberti, president of the West Vancouver Minor Hockey Association, said his organization had seen record registrations this year, more than 8 per cent higher than last season. "We're bursting at the seams," Oberti said, noting the association has had to look outside West Vancouver to find ice time to fit all the players. "The reason why we've grown is because we've put a lot of effort into reaching out to new, non-traditional hockey demographics," he said. "For example, we run ball hockey programs in elementary schools to introduce the sport, and we've done a lot to reach out to the Mandarin-speaking community, because it's a growing segment of our community on the North Shore." Oberti said the association has leveraged Mandarin- and Persian-speaking families already with kids in youth hockey, establishing links to new players through parent groups on social media platforms targeting specific communities such as WeChat and WhatsApp as well as word of mouth from schoolchildren who already play the game. Families new to Canada want to do things they consider Canadian, Oberti said, and they are embracing hockey. "Hockey has an advantage there," he said. "There are a lot of families that do want to participate in the sport — or who are interested in the sport — because of the way it's intertwined in the fabric of social life in Canada." At the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association, vice-president Trent Gustafson said while his group has seen about a 15-to-20 per cent drop-off in participation from a peak in 2018-2019, registration is growing again, and players from non-traditional communities make up a big part of that rebound. "We're up to around 915 to 920 kids playing hockey at Jets this year," Gustafson said. "We don't collect (data) in terms of the ethnicity of our members specifically, but I can safely say more than half are non-Caucasian members." Just as important as getting children in these communities playing hockey, Gustafson said, is the fact that parents new to the game are also eager to volunteer. He said that is a vital contribution to the minor hockey system largely run by volunteers and parents in their spare time. "Those parents are, frankly, just as crazy hockey parents as you're getting in some of the other cities and towns in not only British Columbia but across the country," he said. "It's interesting, the people it seems these days that are almost more willing to volunteer are some of the newer people to hockey. They've just fallen in love with the game." Earland said other efforts to attract players include a try-hockey-for-free program in Cloverdale, B.C., for Indigenous youth, and they are trying to make the game more affordable through equipment programs and other initiatives. "Nobody in minor hockey wants to hear a family say, 'We want to play but our kids can't afford it or we can't afford it,'" she said. She said she wants every child to have an opportunity to play hockey. "It's a fabulous sport. It offers friendships and teamwork and camaraderie for all of our youth." Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association president Lee McCaw said his group does not target any specific community for new players, but the province's rapid population growth and its diversity means more kids being registered from every background. "I think our inclusion for everybody to be able to participate is huge," McCaw said. "We have a huge First Nations population in our city, and there's a lot of learn-to-skate programs that are specifically designed for every ethnicity group and everybody inclusively, together and within Chilliwack." Nathan Bosa, the president of the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association, said even if there are no specific programs aimed at the diverse newcomer groups, sport could be an opportunity to support them. "We're talking about this as a board a while ago, about having a program for new people coming into Canada and into Kamloops (to) give them a little bit of an instruction on how things work," Bosa said. "It's something that we're going to be looking at in the new year. I think we've started to see that the influx is very noticeable, and it's good. Getting children into sport, whether it's hockey or something else, allows children and their parents to make friends and it brings them into the community, Bosa said. Bosa and McCaw also noted the impact of hockey exposure in the South Asian community as another factor in attracting new players, including Hockey Night in Canada's Punjabi broadcast, and homegrown talent such as Arshdeep Bains from Surrey playing for the Vancouver Canucks in February. The Winnipeg Jets, meanwhile, signed forward Kevin He to a three-year entry-level deal this month, making him the first player born in China to ink an N. H. L deal. Scott Furman, Hockey Canada's vice-president of growth and retention, said progress has also been made on other fronts, with the visibility of women's hockey skyrocketing as the Professional Women's Hockey League drives female player registration to a new high beyond 100,000 countrywide this season. Furman said the upheaval and change in management at Hockey Canada in recent years meant a new approach, bringing inclusion and more programs to help with costs of the game. He said the rebound in B.C. is symbolic of this change. "Last season, for the first time, we hit 50,000 players that identified as black, Indigenous or people of colour, and that was an 8-per-cent increase on the previous season," Furman said. "In B.C., I think about 19 per cent of players identify as black, Indigenous or people of colour, which is well above the national average. And the South Asian community represents 4.5 per cent of all players — a 46 per cent increase since the 2021 season. "It certainly is a positive trend, but nothing's taken for granted. And we've got to continue to do the work to make sure that it continues in that fashion." This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 28, 2024. The controversial sports personality recently unleashed a tirade on T he Skip Bayless Show about James' reaction to fans questioning his claims about watching Dalton Knecht in college. "LeBron James has done it again. He's given me yet another reason for why he's just not the GOAT!" Bayless began, before launching into his critique of James's mental toughness. "He can just be so fragile, so vulnerable, so mentally weak, such a thin skinned diva, ultimately, such a baby!" Stephen Lew-Imagn Images The source of his criticism? LeBron's postgame comments about social media users doubting that he watched Knecht play at Tennessee. "Come on LeBron, you're so much better than this—a player of your magnitude, of your caliber, acting like this about social media? Are you kidding me?" Bayless then broke down the specific incident: "So I'm watching the postgame live out here... and LeBron's pissy about Dalton Knecht. Why LeBron? He says people on the internet are calling him a liar for saying that he closely watched a lot of Dalton Knecht's games at Tennessee and that he loved him and that people don't believe that he actually watched a lot of Dalton Knecht at Tennessee." The sports commentator pointed out the irony of James's massive social media following: "I've closely watched LeBron, I study his every move, I'm fascinated in him... You're it, LeBron, but you're not the GOAT. He's got 159 million IG followers. He's got 52.9 million followers on X. Man that is social media impact, LeBron... I will bet you that he might have seen [only] two or three people say 'oh, come on, LeBron.'" Bayless concluded with a final jab: "He's actually said, I'm off social media, I'm going to take my ball and I'm going to go home because you people called me a liar. What a baby!" Protected personal information of more than 1 million people — including about 4,700 Social Security numbers — was accessed from Illinois Department of Human Services files in April, the agency confirmed last week. State agencies are required under the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act to notify the news media of certain reportable breaches of security. In a statement, the Illinois Department of Human Services said it experienced a privacy breach on April 25 when a phishing campaign was used to access a number of employee accounts and the files associated with the accounts. Phishing involves sending seemingly legitimate requests for personal or sensitive information such as passwords or account numbers. IDHS said the files that were accessed included Social Security numbers for 4,704 people. In addition, public assistance account information was accessed for more than 1.1 million people. While that information did not include Social Security numbers, it did have names, public assistance account numbers and some combination of addresses, birthdate, Illinois State Board of Education Student Information System identification numbers and cellphone numbers. "Upon learning of the phishing incident, IDHS worked in partnership with the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology to investigate the extent of the breach and to determine which individuals were included," according to the statement. "This was an in-depth forensic analysis, followed by a manual review of all compromised files to determine the nature of the breach. IDHS continues to train its employees on how to avoid and report phishing attempts." Written notices were sent to those whose Social Security numbers were involved and whose current address was on file. Those notices provide details about available actions, including credit monitoring. Get Government & Politics updates in your inbox! Gunfire erupted on Thursday evening in the capital Juba, sparking concerns about the stability of the world's youngest country that is already plagued by power struggles, ethnic infighting and a deep economic malaise. The shooting around the home of Koor, who was fired by Kiir in early October and placed under house arrest, caused panic among local residents before it was contained after about an hour. Following the meeting, South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF) spokesman Lul Ruai Koang said the incident took place after a "misunderstanding" between security forces attempting to relocate the ex-head of the National Security Services. Koang said Koor had now agreed to the relocation "with his dear wife, one bodyguard, and a cook" elsewhere in the city. He would be provided with additional army protection at his new residence, but Koang emphasised he was not under "their (army) detention." He said four people, two civilians and two soldiers, had been killed during the confrontation. The meeting convened by Kiir included the heads of defence, police, national security and military intelligence. A source in the presidency press unit said Koor was also present. The Sudans Post newspaper quoted a security official as saying the meeting had "resolved all outstanding tensions" and that the spy chief and his family "have been assured of their safety". In an alert to its staff on the ground on Thursday, the United Nations in South Sudan had said the shooting was linked to the arrest of the former spymaster and advised people to take cover. Koang told AFP that Koor "remains at his house", and denied claims circulating on social media that he had fled to the UN compound in Juba. There was a heavy deployment of military forces around his home in the Thongpiny district, an AFP correspondent said, but traffic has resumed and people were going about their daily business. Police spokesman John Kassara said the situation was now calm but that Thongpiny remained sealed off and residents "should remain vigilant". Koor became head of the feared National Security Services (NSS) after South Sudan's independence in 2011 but was sacked in October leading to widespread speculation he had been planning to overthrow Kiir. After his dismissal from the NSS, Koor was appointed governor of Warrap State, Kiir's home state, but this was abruptly revoked by the president before he took the oath of office. Koang said there had been a "misunderstanding" between two security services forces present at Koor's residence when a third unit arrived for the relocation. "That was the start of the armed confrontation that you heard," he said. Four people, two servicemen and two civilians, were killed in the incident, he said, and two civilians were wounded. Koor's sacking came just two weeks after Kiir again postponed by two years, to December 2026, the first elections in the nation's history. The delay has exasperated the international community, which has been pressing the country's leaders to complete a transitional process, including unifying rival armed forces and drawing up a constitution. The NSS was at the centre of controversy in July when parliament approved amendments to legislation allowing the agency to continue to arrest -- without a warrant -- anyone accused of offences against the state, raising alarm among rights groups and South Sudan's international partners. The country has struggled to recover from a brutal civil war between forces loyal to Kiir and his now deputy Riek Machar from 2013 to 2018 that killed about 400,000 people and drove millions from their homes. It remains one of the poorest and most corrupt countries on the planet and continues to be plagued by chronic instability and climate disasters. str-txw-rbu/giv
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Department of Homeland Security agent who the FBI says conspired with another agent to sell an illicit drug known as “bath salts” pleaded not guilty to a drug distribution conspiracy charge Friday in federal court. A grand jury in Salt Lake City brought the criminal charge against Special Agent David Cole of the Homeland Security Investigations unit earlier this week. The indictment alleges that Cole abused his position as a federal law enforcement agent to obtain and sell drugs for profit. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Cole took drugs that had been seized as evidence, telling colleagues he was using them for legitimate investigations, and instead sold them to a confidential informant who resold the drugs for profit on the streets of Utah, according to the indictment. The informant, who has a lengthy criminal history, had been recruited by federal agents to work for them upon his release from prison. But in addition to conducting controlled buys from suspected drug dealers as directed by investigators, the informant said he was compelled by Cole and another agent to also engage in illegal sales. The investigation began after the informant’s defense attorney contacted the U.S. Attorney in Utah in October to report that agents had required him to engage in potentially illegal acts dating from last spring to early December. Details of drug sales offered by the informant were confirmed through surveillance and other sources, the FBI said. Cole and the second agent — identified in court documents only as “Person A” — profited up to $300,000 from the illegal scheme, according to an FBI affidavit filed in the case. FBI spokesperson Sandra Barker said Friday that “Person A” had not been arrested or charged, but the investigation was ongoing. Cole, 50, of South Jordan, Utah, entered the courtroom Friday handcuffed and hunched over, wearing a white and gray, striped jumpsuit. U.S. Magistrate Judge Dustin Pead accepted Cole’s not guilty plea and scheduled a trial for the week of Feb. 24. Federal officials say Cole’s indictment sends a message that officers who break the law and undermine the public’s trust in law enforcement will be prosecuted. “A drug dealer who carries a badge is still a drug dealer — and one who has violated an oath to uphold the law and protect the public,” said Nicole Argentieri, head of the U.S. Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “No one is above the law.” Special Agent Shohini Sinha, who leads the FBI’s Salt Lake City field office, said Cole’s alleged actions helped fuel an already devastating drug crisis . Ingestion of synthetic bath salts, also known as Alpha-PVP or cathinone, can lead to bizarre behavior such as paranoia and extreme strength, according to authorities who say it’s similar to methamphetamine, cocaine or ecstasy. They are unrelated to actual bathing products. Cole’s attorney, Alexander Ramos, has declined to directly address the criminal allegations but said his client has a strong reputation within the federal law enforcement community. Ramos did not immediately respond Friday to emails seeking comment on the not guilty plea. The Homeland Security Investigations department where Cole worked conducts federal criminal investigations into the illegal movement of people, goods, money, weapons, drugs and sensitive technology into, out of and across the U.S. Cole and the second agent had their credentials suspended but have not been fired, according to court documents.

NoneA campaign manager and advisor for President-elect Donald Trump has spoken about the moment Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, as the pair sat in the Republican 's office. Chris LaCivita, who has worked in and around Trump's campaigns over the past eight years, was speaking on David Axelrod 's podcast The Axe Files, with the former advisor to President Barack Obama asking about the GOP's slump in the 2022 midterms. LaCivita agreed with Axelrod that the election that year was seen as a repudiation of Trump, but said it was important to look at the U.S. Supreme Court 's Dobbs decision earlier that summer. The strategist was sitting in Trump's office at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, when the news broke that the right to an abortion had been swept aside. "My phone went off, the alert went off and I went 'Oh boy!' and he's like 'What?' and I read it to him, he just looked at me and said: 'Well we're going to have a problem'," LaCivita said. "He instinctively knew immediately the political issue that was going to pose." While Trump took credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade during his 2024 campaign, having appointed three conservative judges during his presidency, LaCivita's account of his initial reaction suggests he understood there could be backlash against the Republican Party in the midterms. Axelrod and LaCivita discussed the polling ahead of that November 2022 vote, along with the results, which despite the GOP's takeback of the House of Representatives was seen as somewhat of a loss for the party. "It was viewed as an immediate repudiation of Trump and it was because of the Dobbs decision, in part, it was because the party was ready to move on," he said, adding that the rising stock of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also threatened Trump's 2024 chances. A few weeks later, Trump was embroiled in more controversy when right-wing podcaster Nick Fuentes and Ye, formerly known as Kanye, showed up at Mar-a-Lago. "That was a rough part, it was a low part," LaCivita told Axelrod. The advisor said the Trump campaign machine's ability to move through controversies and "survive it" marked it out as something different to other campaigns that had come before. He said there was also confidence going into the primaries earlier in 2024 that Trump would sweep through them, and that Haley and DeSantis would not be as much of a problem as they perhaps felt in 2022. As for the issue of abortion , while it did play a major role for voters in the 2024 election, Trump's ties to the Dobbs decision did not appear to have had such a negative effect as it perhaps did two years ago.

Brickner: The gift of educationIn this article, DANIEL ADAJI explores the integration of smart technologies in odour management, focusing on their features, benefits, and best practices for effective implementation in modern poultry farms Odour management remains a significant challenge in poultry farming. The unpleasant smells emanating from manure, feed, and ammonia not only affect the health of workers and nearby residents but also influence the productivity and well-being of the birds. Modern poultry operations require innovative solutions to maintain a healthy and sustainable environment. Smart gadgets are emerging as advanced tools for monitoring, mitigating, and eliminating odours, offering a transformative approach to odour control in poultry farming. By leveraging technology, poultry farmers can effectively address this age-old challenge, improving air quality and productivity while ensuring compliance with environmental standards. Challenges of odour control in poultry farms Odours in poultry farms are caused by a combination of biological, chemical, and environmental factors. Understanding these challenges is essential to implementing effective solutions. Common sources of odours Manure serves as a primary contributor to odours. It contains high levels of ammonia and other volatile compounds that emit strong smells if improperly managed. The decomposition of organic matter in manure releases gases such as methane and hydrogen sulphide, further exacerbating the problem. Feed storage and spillage cause additional odour problems. Spoilt or spilt feed ferments, creating unpleasant smells and attracting pests. Poor feed management can lead to significant losses and increased environmental pollution. Ventilation issues also contribute to odour accumulation. Inadequate airflow causes odour buildup, adversely affecting the air quality in poultry houses. Poor ventilation can also lead to respiratory problems for birds and workers. Wastewater management is another critical issue. Inefficient disposal of water used in cleaning facilities results in stagnant water and associated odours. Wastewater often contains high levels of organic matter, which decomposes to produce unpleasant smells. Traditional odour control methods, such as manual cleaning and basic ventilation systems, often fall short of addressing these challenges effectively. The introduction of smart gadgets provides a paradigm shift, enabling poultry farms to tackle odour issues more efficiently. Smart gadgets for odour management in poultry farms Several smart gadgets are now available to help poultry farmers control odours effectively. These devices leverage advanced technology, including sensors, automation, and data analytics, to optimise odour management processes. Smart ammonia detectors are essential for monitoring harmful gases. Ammonia, one of the most common and harmful gases found in poultry farms, can negatively impact bird health, reduce productivity, and contribute to odour issues. Devices like the Aeroqual Series or EcoSensors provide real-time monitoring of ammonia levels, offering instant alerts when thresholds are exceeded. They continuously monitor ammonia and other harmful gases, integrate with mobile apps for remote alerts, and track historical data for trend analysis. Smart ventilation systems play a crucial role in maintaining air quality and controlling odours. Advanced systems, such as those from Munters or SKOV, automatically optimise airflow based on odour levels and other environmental parameters. These systems adjust airflow automatically, integrate with temperature and humidity controls, and allow remote monitoring and control via dedicated apps. Smart odour neutralisers deploy air-purifying agents like enzymes, biofilters, or activated carbon to mitigate odours effectively. Devices like the PureAiro Smart Ozone Generator are programmable and adjustable to suit specific farm needs. They come with programmable release schedules, adjustable intensity based on farm size and odour concentration, and low energy consumption for cost-effectiveness. IoT-enabled waste management systems enhance efficiency by automating manure and wastewater disposal processes. These systems include smart scrapers, separators, and composters, ensuring timely removal and treatment of waste. They feature automated manure removal systems, IoT sensors for monitoring waste levels, and integration with composting or biogas production units. Smart air quality monitors, such as the Awair Omni or uHoo, provide comprehensive assessments of air quality. These gadgets measure ammonia, methane, temperature, and humidity, helping to identify odour sources and monitor the overall environment. They offer real-time analysis of multiple parameters, integrate with ventilation and neutralisation systems, and use predictive analytics for proactive odour management. Smart feeding systems ensure precise feed distribution, minimising waste and associated smells. Systems like those by Big Dutchman deliver accurate feed tailored to bird size and growth stage, offer remote monitoring and adjustments, and reduce spoiled feed and resultant odours. Integrating smart gadgets for effective odour control Implementing smart gadgets in poultry farms requires a strategic and integrated approach to maximise their effectiveness. Data-driven decision-making is critical. Data collected by smart gadgets enables farm managers to identify trends and problem areas. For instance, consistent high ammonia readings may indicate inadequate ventilation or suboptimal manure management. Automation and synchronisation ensure seamless operations. Ammonia detectors can activate ventilation systems to address high gas levels. Similarly, air quality monitors can trigger odour neutralisers when certain thresholds are reached. Remote monitoring and alerts provide real-time updates via mobile apps, allowing farm managers to respond promptly to any issues, even from remote locations. Best practices for using smart gadgets in poultry farms As the poultry farming industry continues to embrace technological advancements, smart gadgets are increasingly becoming indispensable tools for improving efficiency and environmental management. Devices should be installed in areas where odour generation is most prevalent, such as near manure storage, feeding areas, and water stations. For instance, smart odour sensors placed at manure storage points can monitor ammonia levels in real time, while those installed around feeding areas can detect spoilage or waste buildup that may contribute to unpleasant smells. By placing these gadgets strategically, farmers can ensure timely detection and mitigation of potential hazards, improving the overall farm environment. Regular maintenance Maintenance is a non-negotiable aspect of ensuring that smart gadgets function optimally. Poultry farms are environments with high levels of dust, moisture, and organic materials, which can affect the accuracy and efficiency of devices. Farmers should establish a regular schedule for cleaning, inspecting, and calibrating these gadgets. For example, ammonia sensors should be cleaned and recalibrated periodically to maintain their accuracy. Similarly, smart feeders and water dispensers require regular checks to ensure they deliver the correct amounts without clogging or malfunctions. Proper maintenance extends the lifespan of gadgets and reduces the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns. Training farm workers Technology is only as effective as the people using it. Training farm workers on how to operate smart gadgets and interpret the data they generate is vital. Employees should understand how to respond to alerts, troubleshoot minor issues, and implement the recommended actions. For example, if a smart sensor detects high ammonia levels, trained staff should know how to adjust ventilation or remove manure promptly. Training fosters a sense of ownership and collaboration among workers, ensuring that technology integration becomes a seamless part of daily operations. Adopting a hybrid approach While smart technologies are revolutionary, they work best when combined with traditional farming methods. A hybrid approach that integrates technology with proven techniques like deep litter systems, composting, and natural ventilation creates a comprehensive strategy for odour control and farm management. For instance, using smart ventilation systems alongside natural airflow strategies can significantly enhance air quality in poultry houses. This approach not only optimises the benefits of technology but also ensures that traditional methods remain relevant and effective. Data utilisation for continuous improvement Smart gadgets generate valuable data that can guide decision-making. Farmers should analyse trends and patterns from collected data to identify areas for improvement. For example, data from temperature and humidity sensors can help fine-tune environmental conditions, ensuring better bird health and productivity. By adopting these best practices, poultry farmers can maximise the benefits of smart gadgets while promoting sustainability, productivity, and environmental stewardship on their farms. As technology continues to evolve, integrating these innovations with traditional practices will be key to the future of poultry farming. This is where Scaramanga and his three nipples and secret tropical lair were dreamt up: with its panoramic view over Oracabessa Bay and private beach, it’s easy to see how the latter came into Fleming’s mind; one can only wonder about the former. Chris Blackwell, the music-mogul behind Island Records, has owned GoldenEye since 1976. His friend Bob Marley sold it to him after complaining it was “too posh”. But Blackwell’s relationship with this special place goes way back: he remembers as a child visiting Fleming here with his mother, Blanche, who was one of the novelist’s BFFs. In fact, it was Blackwell’s uncle who originally found the land for Fleming back in 1946 when it was nothing more than 15 acres of overgrown shrub and a derelict donkey racetrack. Fast-forward to today and, after some ingenious development, GoldenEye is on the bucket list of every self-respecting traveller. Needless to say, when an invitation to visit popped up in my inbox my wife and I didn’t need any persuading. Which reminds me of that old and not very funny joke, you know the one: “I went to the Caribbean recently with my wife.” Jamaica? “No, she was happy to go.” Sorry, I told you it wasn’t very funny. Back to GoldenEye. Now set over 56 acres, this village-like resort consists of cottages and villas snaking along a lagoon and little huts perched on stilts over Low Cay Beach. Originally designed by Barbara Hulanicki, the genius behind London’s long-gone emporium Biba, each property is an exercise in low-key luxury. Ours (beachfront hut #45) was a delight, thanks in no small part to its sea-view veranda: the ideal place to enjoy an early morning Blue Mountain coffee or a sundowner punch (the complimentary bottle of Blackwell Rum was a nice touch). For the adventurous, there are plenty of activities from kayaking along the coast and paddle boarding around the lagoon to snorkeling off the nearby coral reef. Personally, I found my happy place on Button Beach, dipping in its bath-like waters and staying “hydrated” at the well-stocked Bamboo Bar; I still think about the jerk BBQ lunch at its adjoining grill. Dinner under the stars at the Bizot Restaurant was also unforgettable: we had a delicious curried fish stew accompanied by a local musician performing a transcendent version of Drive by The Cars. From live bands every night to hidden speakers on the beach, music is everywhere at GoldenEye. Another standout was the Swedish Aroma Massage at the property’s FieldSpa, housed in Naomi Campbell’s old holiday cottage on the lagoon. On the walk there I passed a forest of trees planted by famous names including Johnny Depp, Willie Nelson and Kate Moss. I spotted Lila Moss’ East Indian Mango planted in 2011 and sent a quick pic to her father, Jefferson. “Great to see it’s thriving,” he texted back. Sadly the same can’t be said for Cindy Crawford’s withered tree: somebody please water it. What Blackwell and his team have done at GoldenEye is clever. They have taken all the raw ingredients of Jamaica — the food, the music, the easy-come atmosphere — and reimagined it into a high-performing, customer-friendly idyll. Case in point: Sherifia, our personal concierge, was on Whatsapp 24/7 for all our needs, signing off every message with a “one love”. But if it’s the authentic, chaotic edge of the island you’re after, don’t worry: it’s waiting for you just in earshot on the other side of Button Beach. Leaving the blissful sanctity of GoldenEye was never going to be an easy process so we tagged on a quick stay at its twin property Strawberry Hill. Nestled up high in the Blue Mountains (365 hairpin corners to be precise), it’s a magical spot with small cottages hugging the steep hillside, an infinity pool overlooking Kingston far below and humming birds at breakfast. According to our in-the-know taxi driver, it’s up for sale, so hurry. Bond villains need not apply. Rates at GoldenEye start from £388 and from £292 for Strawberry Hill. elegantresorts.co.ukYou want your home to look beautiful, inside and out, during the holidays, especially if you’re trying to sell it and want to help potential buyers imagine their life in the space. This often means climbing ladders to hang wreaths, garlands, and tinsel. Unfortunately, it also means that accidents can happen. One false move, and you may find yourself falling off the ladder and landing in the emergency room. "The most common injuries we see come from falling off outside ladders that are not stable as you're putting up your lights," says Daniel Ritter, MD, assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at MUSC Department of Emergency Medicine. "People also climb ladders inside the house to decorate. There are plenty of lacerations from trying to open boxes and wrapping presents and a litany of cooking injuries as well." According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission , on average, there are about 160 Christmas decorating-related injuries each day during the holiday season, with over 40% of the incidents involving falls. In the 2022 holiday season, the CPSC reported that about 14,800 people were treated in hospital emergency departments due to holiday decorating-related injuries. "We see sprained and broken ankles and broken wrists," says Ritter. "Sometimes, the best-case scenario is just some bumps and bruises and hurt pride. Even decorating particularly tall areas of your home, I see similar injuries to what we see outside with ankle and forearm injuries." Dr. Ritter cautions anyone who takes blood thinners to be extra cautious around the holidays. "We would never recommend anyone on those medications get up on ladders," he says. "Find someone else to do it or hire someone to do it. It's just too dangerous. Internal bleeding is the main concern, especially bleeding around the brain. It can happen even from minor falls for people who are on blood thinners." If you do suffer a fall, no matter how minor, Dr. Ritter suggests getting checked out by a physician. According to Dr. Ritter, another common injury comes from opening boxes, whether from toys you're putting together or deliveries. "You see a few of those every holiday," says Ritter. Someone opens a box, and the knife goes through it into their hand." Dr. Ritter explains that the ER is pretty quiet on Christmas morning. "Then people start opening their gifts and take out a hoverboard or a new bike and crash it, and the injuries show up in the afternoon," he says. Finally, one more common injury Ritter sees is a result of baking and cooking. "Especially with the littles who want to help, and they grab a hot tray and get burned," says Ritter. Others cut their food up too fast. I've done it to myself with a mandolin that quickly slices things." To prevent injuries, Dr. Ritter says that before you even begin hanging decorations, make sure that the ground underneath the ladder is stable. "Don't decorate when it's wet, cold, or icy outside," he says. "Make sure you know how to use the equipment and never go higher than the recommended highest step on your ladder. That step at the top isn't meant to carry people, so it might break when you're trying to stand on it." Dr. Ritter also suggests that you do not carry any sharp objects while climbing the ladder. "Have a spotter, too," he says. "If something gets tangled or the ladder starts to become shaky or unstable, having someone can be very helpful." Keep in mind that all of your beautiful twinkling lights must be plugged in somewhere, and Dr. Ritter says that electronics can pose problems. "First, make sure that your lights are not damaged and there are no exposed wires," he says. "Make sure you're following manufacturer recommendations about how much load an outlet or an extension cord can carry so you're not at risk of receiving an electrical shock or starting a fire. I do not want to see any Charlestonians in the emergency room because of a house fire from bad wiring and too many Christmas lights." PHILADELPHIA – Eagles quarterback Kenny Pickett has seen limited action this season, mostly appearing in mop-up duty when games were already decided. Those moments allowed him to stay sharp. With starting quarterback Jalen Hurts ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, Pickett finally got his chance to start, marking his first start since Dec. 3, 2023, when he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickett’s backup, Tanner McKee, had also never played in a regular-season game. Together, the two quarterbacks formed an unlikely duo to lead the Eagles to an NFC East title. On Sunday, they combined for 197 net passing yards in the Eagles’ 41-7 win , clinching the division and ensuring the team will finish no lower than the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Pickett completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards, including a touchdown to wide receiver DeVonta Smith , and added a rushing touchdown. However, his day ended in the third quarter when Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons re-injured Pickett’s ribs with a hard hit. “I just wanted to come in and do my part,” Pickett said. “I told the quarterbacks in the tunnel before warm-ups, ‘Just win at all costs. That’s it. That’s all I care about.’ All I wanted to accomplish today was to get the win for the team and for the city. I also wanted to keep the momentum we’ve had going this season.” Pickett, who wore extra padding in his flak jacket to protect his injured ribs, admitted the “Brotherly Shove” play and earlier hits during the game aggravated the injury. The Parsons hit ultimately forced him out of the game. Despite the discomfort, Pickett expressed optimism about his recovery. “I’ll undergo more tests, but I don’t believe they’ll show anything significant,” he said. “Of course, you want to finish the game, but I left it all out there. I did everything I could to play today and stayed as long as I could. I have no regrets. We got the win, and that’s all that matters.” Smith saw Pickett gut it out on the field after taking the shots he did with his banged-up ribs and said he and his teammates respected Pickett for the toughness that he showed. “It did not go unnoticed,” Smith said. “To see him fight through the things he was fighting through, he’s a very tough guy.” BUY EAGLES TICKETS: STUBHUB , VIVID SEATS , TICKETMASTER After serving as the emergency quarterback this season, McKee was elevated to the backup role and made the most of it replacing the injured Pickett, although he did not know how long he was going to play. “They were saying to just stay ready,” McKee said. “They’re great. They’re very positive with things like that. During that moment, we didn’t really know if I was going to go in or if Kenny was going to come back. so Nuss (quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier) asked me if I was prepared and ready for this. He also told me to stay warm, so I was excited.” In very limited work, McKee completed three of his four passes for 54 yards and two touchdown passes, becoming the first player to throw for multiple touchdowns with fewer than five attempts in their first career game. “It was great. Before the game, I was thinking that this could be my shot. Then going out there and just being on the field, it’s great because you’re just playing football. You realize you’ve been here before and had reps multiple times in practice. I was running through it in my bedroom last night. Once you finally get in the field, all you’re doing is playing football.” Head coach Nick Sirianni said he was happy that they both came in and played “clean” football and limited their mistakes, helping the Eagles come away with the win. “They deserve all that credit. You can’t go out there and play that position without the greatness of other people, and they had some greatness from other guys out there. Starting with their coaches...who really did a good job of getting them ready. Then the plays that they got from Smitty (Smith), Saquon (Barkley), Grant Calcaterra, A.J. [Brown] and the offensive line. That’s what a team is. A team steps up in adversity and steps up and has each other’s backs.” Having two quarterbacks who are capable of coming in and playing in a short-term capacity is important for a team with much higher aspirations than winning the division title. Either Pickett or McKee will likely play a lot in next week’s regular-season finale against Giants if the Eagles are eliminated from the race for the top seed if either the Minnesota Vikings or Detroit Lions win their games this weekend. It could also help them this offseason if the team wanted to recoup a few draft picks from teams that is desperate to add a quarterback because of an injury. For now, the Eagles will make sure that they are prepared to step in if anything else were to happen to Hurts this season. Trying to fit in routines around work can be tricky, especially for women. New research from Vitality’s ‘Active women, healthy lives’ report finds that eight in 10 women under 50 say their demanding work schedules are holding them back from being active. As a result, a quarter of women exercise less than once a week (25%), and over half of women exercise less than they used to (52%). Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, in partnership with Vitality, is launching Walk Out to Work Out, a new initiative encouraging women to reclaim time during their busy working days to stay active. Additionally, she has shared some top tips on how to fit some exercise in during the working day. The full ‘Active women, healthy lives’ report can be found on . Jessica shared: "As a busy mum and business owner, I know how challenging it can be to fit in long workouts. That’s why I swear by short bursts of activity—what I call "exercise snacks." "Whether it’s a 5-minute stretch between meetings or a quick walk to clear your mind, these small moments can really add up and keep you feeling active without disrupting your day. Jessica explained: "When I need to take calls or brainstorm ideas, I often head out for a walk with my dog while doing it – ticking off two things I have to do. I find it not only helps me stay active but also boosts my creativity and focus. "Turn phone calls or virtual meetings into walking meetings where possible. It’s a simple way to add movement while staying productive." "As someone who’s juggled intense schedules, I’ve learned the importance of protecting my lunch break," Jessica said. "I use part of it for physical activity, whether it’s a quick workout, a jog, or a calming walk. "If you feel like your lunch break has disappeared into your workday, speak to your employer about how you can reclaim that time — it’s yours to use for your well-being. I suggest putting it in the diary as a meeting – this will ring-fence the time for you." Jessica explained: "I have worked with a lot of different sponsors and their teams and I’ve seen the difference it makes when workplaces support physical activity. "If you’re struggling to stay active, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts with your employer. Suggest ideas like walking meetings, group exercise activities, or even flexible working hours to make staying active more achievable. "Remember, these changes benefit everyone, from employees to the company itself. Jessica said: "I rely on technology to keep me on track. Fitness trackers or simple alarms can remind you to stand, stretch, or take a short walk every hour. "Even small movements like this can make a huge difference to your energy levels and focus throughout the day."

In conclusion, the decision by the opposition to display Assad's private photo album raises complex ethical dilemmas that must be carefully examined and addressed. While the intention behind this move may be to delegitimize the president and sway public opinion, the means by which it is being executed warrants critical reflection. Respect for privacy, integrity, and the well-being of all individuals involved should always take precedence over political expediency and strategic advantage. Only by upholding these values can we strive towards a more ethical and humane approach to conflict resolution.
“I believe Capital Goods, Infra, EMS, Hospitals, Pharma, Tourism, Auto, New Energy, E-com, Jewellery etc. are good themes to play at current valuations,” says Amnish Aggarwal , Director - Institutional Equities, PL Capital - Prabhudas Lilladher . In an interview with ETMarkets, Aggarwal said: “We have cut our base case 12-month NIFTY target to 27,381 from 27,867 earlier) and recommend selective buying on dips for long-term gains” Edited excerpts: We have witnessed a volatile November as markets keep moving from bullish and bearish phases. What is your call on markets? Amnish Aggarwal: November has been a rollercoaster for the markets, with the NIFTY down 6% since mid-October, driven by FII outflows, geopolitical uncertainty, and a strong dollar. Inflation, especially food inflation, has also pressured demand, particularly in urban areas, with October CPI at 6.2%. I remain cautiously optimistic on markets. Political stability post-state elections gives the government momentum for reforms and increased capex, which should drive growth. Rural demand remains steady, and I expect a boost from the festival and wedding seasons. However, inflation remains a challenge, and with CPI high, we likely won’t see rate cuts from the RBI until after the budget. I believe Capital Goods, Infra, EMS, Hospitals, Pharma, Tourism, Auto, New Energy, E-com, Jewellery etc. are good themes to play at current valuations. We have cut our base case 12-month NIFTY target to 27,381 from 27,867 earlier) and recommend selective buying on dips for long-term gains. Market might be down by about 8-10% from the highs in terms of benchmark levels. But, are you getting any bargain buys at current levels? Amnish Aggarwal: Absolutely, with the market down around 8-10% from its highs, the correction has opened up attractive entry points in specific stocks. We have added Lupin, Polycab India, Aster DM Healthcare, DOMS Industries and Triveni Turbine to our high conviction picks. You Might Also Like: Strategy to avoid risky speculation when investing Lupin: Lupin is gaining from higher US and India sales and margins led by better product mix and cost optimization. Lupin saw remarkable turnaround in profitability with ~2x jump in EBITDA over FY23-24. Polycab India: Polycab’s revenue growth in the wires and cables segment will continue to be healthy, with stability in commodity prices, pick-up in government spending, continued investments by private players and robust real estate offtake. Aster DM Healthcare: We believe that margins will improve in India hospitals aided by gross margin expansion, healthy ARPOB, occupancy scale up, faster ramp up in its Whitefield new unit and bed additions. You Might Also Like: Stock-level steep correction: An opportunity for contrarian bets? DOMS Industries: DOMS has a diversified stationary & arts material portfolio and has outlined a capex plan of Rs 450 crore over 2 years to expand capacity in writing instruments, watercolor pens, markers and highlighters. We expect revenue/PAT CAGR of 26%/28% over FY24-FY27E. Triveni Turbine: The company is well positioned for sustained growth led by global energy transition and generation gap fuelling demand for its industrial and API turbines, and healthy order book of Rs 1800 crore with robust export/domestic inquiries. Trump pledges 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and deeper tariffs on China. Do you see any impact for India Inc.? Amnish Aggarwal: The 25% tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and deeper tariffs on China will likely play in India’s favour, as global companies seek alternatives to China. India stands to benefit significantly in sectors like electronics manufacturing, textiles, chemicals, and engineering, with FDI in manufacturing already increasing by 20% last year. Trump’s foreign policy and stable crude oil prices (around $70–$75 per barrel) can further support India, particularly with reduced geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine conflict. That said, higher tariffs could push up the cost of raw materials and intermediate goods, impacting sectors that are reliant on imports like electronics and auto. Still, India is well-positioned to take advantage of the global shift in manufacturing, especially in IT, defence, and GCC sectors. Is there any beaten-down theme that is now attractive as the risk-to-reward ratio is more comfortable? Amnish Aggarwal: The Capital Goods and Engineering sector is now attractive, as its risk-to-reward ratio has become more comfortable. In Q2 FY25, Capital Goods sector reported more than 19% EBIDTA growth YoY and saw 9 rating upgrades. We have increased overweight on the sector from 280 basis points to 420 basis points, post sharp correction in key stocks. PL’s model portfolio includes stocks like ABB, Siemens, Polycab India, L&T and Bharat Electronics from this sector. We have also turned equal weight on L&T given attractive valuations. There is too much chatter about FIIs taking out money but they have been consistent buyers in debt. How do you think investors should read that? Amnish Aggarwal: The fact that FIIs have been consistent buyers in debt despite pulling out funds from equities suggests a shift in investment strategy, likely driven by concerns over market volatility and inflationary pressures. This trend indicates that foreign investors are favouring the relative safety and stable returns offered by debt instruments, particularly in the current environment where equity markets are facing corrections. With India's government bonds becoming a part of Bloomberg and JP Morgan bond indices, and soon to be a part of FTSE Russell index by Feb 2025, the outlook for India’s debt markets remains positive. For investors, this should be seen as a sign to diversify their portfolios. While equity markets may present attractive opportunities over the long term, given the recent pullback, debt investments offer a safer haven, especially as interest rates begin to stabilise. In light of a strong dollar and its global repercussions, how do you see currency movements affecting Indian investments? Amnish Aggarwal: A strong US dollar can have mixed effects on Indian investments. On one hand, a stronger dollar often leads to capital outflows from emerging markets like India, as investors seek safety in dollar-denominated assets, potentially putting pressure on the Indian rupee. This depreciation of the rupee can lead to higher costs for imports, especially for commodities and oil, resulting in inflationary pressures that could affect domestic consumption and corporate profitability. On the other hand, a weaker rupee can provide a competitive advantage to Indian exporters, such as those in IT services, pharmaceuticals, and auto components, as their products become cheaper in global markets, boosting their earnings. However, companies with dollar-denominated debt might face higher repayment costs, which could strain their financials. It will all boil down to how India manages its fiscal and current deficits. Considered the UK’s most prestigious award in the field of the visual arts, the prize is attended by a £25,000 purse (about $31,500). Kaur, who grew up amid her city’s Sikh community and studied silversmithing and jewelry at Glasgow School of Art before attending London’s Royal College of Art, was honored for work examining themes of identity and community via mundane objects. Her winning exhibition, “Alter Altar” at Glasgow’s Tramway gallery, included a bright red Ford Escort draped with a monstrous doily, commenting on the plight of Indians who migrated to the UK and wound up toiling in textile factories. The show additionally incorporated elements such as family photos, an Axminster carpet, and handbells. Kaur received the prize at a ceremony taking place at Tate Britain on the evening of December 3. She was praised by the judges for her exhibition’s “visual and aural experience that suggests both solidarity and joy.” Draped in the Palestinian flag, the artist noted, “Something like this that is so visible means a lot to a lot of different people. It means something to different groups and I’m up [for] representing all of them.” Kaur used her platform to call for the recognition of artists’ political voices and for a cessation of Israel’s war in Gaza. “I want the separation between the expression of politics in the gallery and the practice of politics in life to disappear,” she said. “I want the institution to understand: If you want us inside, you need to listen to us outside. Ceasefire now, arms embargo now, free Palestine.” Kaur bested a shortlist that included Filipino artist Pio Abad, known for a wide-ranging practice critiquing colonial histories and cultural loss; Claudette Johnson, acclaimed for her large-scale pastel drawings of Black women; and Delaine Le Bas, an artist of Romany heritage whose immersive environments investigate themes of nationhood, belonging, and gender. Abad, Johnson, and Le Bas will each receive £10,000. An exhibition of the work of all four artists is on view at Tate Britain through February 16, 2025.Israel launches new strikes on Lebanon as leaders draw closer to ceasefire with HezbollahMaxLinear director Ted Tewksbury sells $89,110 in stock
The collab between the Super Bowl champion and creative label KidSuper marks a fresh chapter for Captain Morgan, known more for cocktails than crewnecks – until now. As the countdown to Super Bowl LIX on February 9 begins, Captain Morgan is making a bold play with its first-ever merchandise drop. Diageo’s beloved rum brand has teamed up with former New York Giants star Victor Cruz and NYC-based creative label KidSuper for a collaboration that blends fashion, football and fun. The merch release is part of Captain Morgan’s ongoing ‘Follow the Captain’ program, a scavenger hunt that combines real-world events with social media buzz to reward consumers 21 and older with exclusive prizes. The limited-edition piece – a cream-colored crewneck designed by Cruz and KidSuper founder Colm Dillane – showcases a playful, retro-inspired sailor illustration on the back, paired with the cheeky phrase “The Captain’s Salsa Club.” The design nods to Dillane’s eclectic aesthetic while channeling Cruz’s flair for style. “We’re always on the lookout for new ways to serve up the unexpected,” added Anne Nosko, vice-president of Captain Morgan. “As the Original Spiced Rum, we brought together our own crew - complete with an NFL legend and an iconic NYC brand - to create something that inspires you and your crew to infuse every moment with fun and spark the adventure of a lifetime.” The collection drops November 22 on KidSuper.com, where fans can snag it before it sells out. Missed out? Captain Morgan has another trick up its sleeve – fans over 21 can visit FollowTheCaptain.com for a shot at winning the merch. “Off the field, fashion has always been one of my biggest passions and after working with Captain Morgan for several years, I knew I had to be part of their first-ever merch drop,” added Cruz. “When I found out Colm and the KidSuper brand was joining the crew, I knew we were cooking up something special. I want everyone who wears this Crewneck to feel like they’re part of our crew too, sharing in the adventure that brings us all together.” Advertisement The campaign’s NYC launch, put on by the creative agency NVE, was as grand as its collaborators, with a giant shipping container stationed at a bustling commuter hub. Cruz and Dillane revealed the exclusive design inside, giving passersby a sneak peek of the drop. “I like to push boundaries and take risks, and this collab with Captain Morgan does just that, with a bit of playfulness, too,” added Dillane. “We’re all about bringing crews together for the fun of it, and getting to work with Victor, a legend in his own right, made this project extra special.” In a press release, Captain Morgan promises that the adventure won’t stop here. With Super Bowl LIX just around the corner, fans can expect more surprises –perhaps even something brewing on “the most famous street in New Orleans.” Seeking more creative campaigns?
