There were new trends, as always. “Brat summer” became a thing, as did “demure, mindful.” And for some inexplicable reason, we became obsessed with celebrity lookalike contests. There were breakups — Bennifer is, again, a thing of the past — and reunions: Oasis, please try to stay together for the tour. Yet some things stayed, remarkably, the same: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé kept on breaking records and making history. Tech and growth stocks have dragged Wall Street's main indexes lower at the end of an upbeat holiday-shortened week that was driven by expectations around a traditionally strong period for markets. Yields on some US Treasury notes were higher on the day, with the ones on the benchmark 10-year note hovering near an over seven-month high they hit on Thursday. The yields on the benchmark 10-year note were last at 4.587 per cent. Rate-sensitive growth stocks dropped with Nvidia down three per cent and Tesla off by 3.8 per cent, while Microsoft shed two per cent. Ten of the 11 major S&P sectors, including information technology and consumer discretionary fell the most, down about two per cent and 1.9 per cent, after powering most of the broader market's gains in 2024. "Tech, which has had a tremendous run, is starting to pull back. It is the beginning of a healthy correction that will get focused in on over the next four to eight weeks as we switch administrations," said Jay Woods, Chief Global Strategist at Freedom Capital Markets. In early trading on Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 329.50 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 42,996.30, the S&P 500 lost 70.22 points, or 1.16 per cent, to 5,967.60 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 356.63 points, or 1.77 per cent, to 19,665.01. Will just get pilots killed,” says billionaire WASHINGTON: Billionaire Elon Musk, tapped by US President-elect Donald Trump to slash federal government spending, lashed out at modern fighter jets on Monday, saying that drones were the future of air combat. “Manned fighter jets are obsolete in the age of drones anyway. Will just get pilots killed,” said the head of SpaceX, Tesla and X, in a post on his social media platform.Musk singled out the F-35 -- a next-generation fighter jet manufactured by US-based Lockheed Martin that entered service in 2015 -- for criticism. “Meanwhile, some idiots are still building manned fighter jets like the F-35,” he posted, alongside a video of hundreds of drones hovering in formation in the sky.The F-35, the world’s most advanced fighter, is stealth capable and can also be used to gather intelligence. Germany, Poland, Finland and Romania have all recently signed deals for the aircraft.Its development, however, has suffered from issues, notably in the design of its computer programmes, and its very high operating costs are regularly criticised by its detractors. “The F-35 design was broken at the requirements level, because it was required to be too many things to too many people,” said Musk on Monday, calling it “an expensive (and) complex jack of all trades, master of none.”For Mauro Gilli, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, “what makes the F-35... expensive is the software and the electronics, not the pilot per se.” This is significant “because a reusable drone would need to get all that flashy electronics of an F-35,” he said on X.He also pointed out that the existence of the F-35 had forced US rivals to develop their own aircraft and advanced radar to match it. “By simply existing, the F-35 and the B-1 force Russia and China into strategic choices they would not have to make otherwise (i.e. budget allocations),” Gilli said, referring to B-1 heavy bomber aircraft. “Even if Musk were right (and he is not), deleting the programmes would relax these constraints on them.”
Children in hospital receive Christmas presentsKroger and Albertsons' plan for the largest U.S. supermarket merger in history crumbled Wednesday, with Albertsons pulling out of the $24.6 billion deal and the two companies accusing each other of not doing enough to push their proposed alliance through. Albertsons said it had filed a lawsuit against Kroger, seeking a $600 million termination fee as well as billions of dollars in legal fees and lost shareholder value. Kroger said the claims were “baseless” and that Albertsons was not entitled to the fee. “After reviewing options, the company determined it is no longer in its best interests to pursue the merger,” Kroger said in a statement Wednesday. The bitter breakup came the day after two judges halted the proposed merger in separate court cases. U.S. District Court Judge Adrienne Nelson in Oregon issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday blocking the merger until an in-house judge at the Federal Trade Commission could consider the matter. An hour later, Superior Court Judge Marshall Ferguson in Seattle issued a permanent injunction barring the merger . Ferguson ruled that combining Albertsons and Kroger would lessen competition and violate consumer-protection laws. The companies could have appealed the rulings or proceeded to the in-house FTC hearings. Albertsons' decision to pull out of deal instead surprised some industry experts. “I’m in a state of professional and commercial shock that they would take this scorched earth approach,” said Burt Flickinger, a longtime analyst and owner of retail consulting firm Strategic Resource Group. “The logical thing would have been for Albertsons to let the decision sink in for a day and then meet and see what could be done. But the lawsuit seems to make that a moot issue.” Albertsons is unlikely to find another merger partner because it has significant debt and underperforming stores in most of its markets., Flickinger said. Consumers will feel the most immediate impact of the deal's demise, he said, since Albertsons charges 12% to 14% more than Kroger and other grocery rivals. “They had so much debt they had to pay it off it's reflected in their pricing and promotional structure,” Flickinger said. Albertsons CEO Vivek Sankaran testified during the federal hearing in September that his company might consider “structural options” like laying off employees, closing stores and exiting certain markets if the merger with Kroger didn’t go through. “I would have to consider that,” he said. “It’s a dramatically different picture with the merger than without it.” But in a statement Wednesday, Sankaran said Albertsons would “start this next chapter in strong financial condition with a track record of positive business performance." In the company's most recent quarter, Albertsons' revenue rose 1% to $18.5 billion and it reported $7.9 billion in debt. Kroger said it would also move forward in a strong financial position, with revenue down slightly to $33.6 billion in its most recent quarter. The company announced a $7.5 billion share buyback program Wednesday after a two-year pause. Kroger and Albertsons first proposed the merger in 2022 . They argued that combining would help them better compete with big retailers like Walmart, Costco and Amazon, which are gaining an increasing share of U.S. grocery sales. Together, Kroger and Albertsons would control around 13% of the U.S. grocery market. Walmart controls around 22%. Under the merger agreement, Kroger and Albertsons — who compete in 22 states — agreed to sell 579 stores in places where their locations overlap to C&S Wholesale Grocers , a New Hampshire-based supplier to independent supermarkets that also owns the Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly store brands. But the Federal Trade Commission and two states — Washington and Colorado — sued to block the merger earlier this year, saying it would raise prices and lower workers' wages by eliminating competition. It also said the divestiture plan was inadequate and that C&S was ill-equipped to take on so many stores. On Wednesday, Albertsons said that Kroger failed to exercise “best efforts” and to take “any and all actions” to secure regulatory approval of the companies’ agreed merger transaction. Albertsons said Kroger refused to divest the assets necessary for antitrust approval, ignored regulators' feedback and rejected divestiture buyers that would have been stronger than C&S. “Kroger’s self-serving conduct, taken at the expense of Albertsons and the agreed transaction, has harmed Albertsons’ shareholders, associates and consumers,” said Tom Moriarty, Albertsons’ general counsel, in a statement. Kroger said that it disagrees with Albertsons “in the strongest possible terms.” It said early Wednesday that Albertsons was responsible for “repeated intentional material breaches and interference throughout the merger process.” Kroger , based in Cincinnati, Ohio, operates 2,800 stores in 35 states, including brands like Ralphs, Smith’s and Harris Teeter. Albertsons , based in Boise, Idaho, operates 2,273 stores in 34 states, including brands like Safeway, Jewel Osco and Shaw’s. Together, the companies employ around 710,000 people. Kroger sued the FTC in August in federal court in Ohio, claiming that the federal agency’s in-house administrative hearings were unlawful because the FTC was also able to challenge the merger in federal court in Oregon. In paperwork filed Wednesday, the FTC said it expected to update the court on its next steps in that case by Dec. 17. In Colorado, which also sued to block the merger, Attorney General Phil Weiser said Tuesday that he still was awaiting a decision from a state judge. In that case, Colorado also was challenging an allegedly illegal no-poach agreement Kroger and Albertsons made during a 2022 strike. Shares of Albertsons fell 1.5% Wednesday, while Kroger's stock was up 1%.

VANCOUVER — Global Affairs Canada is warning Canadians in South Korea to avoid demonstrations and exercise caution after the country’s president imposed an hours-long period of martial law. The situation in South Korea arose after President Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law on Tuesday, vowing to eliminate what he described as “anti-state” forces from the opposition that controls parliament. Yoon’s declaration triggered tense political drama, as troops surrounded the parliament while 190 lawmakers gathered inside to vote to lift the martial law shortly after it was imposed. Global Affairs Canada has not raised the risk level for Canadians in South Korea but did ask those in the country to monitor local media for the latest information, while following authorities’ instructions, such as curfew orders. A Vancouver-based travel agent says the chaos in Seoul is not likely to have a major effect on Canadian visitor numbers to South Korea. Glynnis Chan, owner of Happy Times Travel, says the martial law dissolved quickly and will likely have minimal impact on people’s travel plans, which tend to be made at least two months in advance. “There’s always some sort of impact, but it really depends on what happens with the situation over the long term,” Chan says. “If nothing more happens, people forget after a week or so about what took place.” Chan says she is not expecting any impact on her business, since Japan is a more popular destination among her customers. Several Korean-Canadian travel agencies in Metro Vancouver declined to comment on the political situation in Seoul. Canada Flagpoling: Canada has officially ended flagpoling for work and study permits at its border. Thus, people will no longer be able to cross the border for work permits and study permits. According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), foreigners with temporary resident status (foreign students studying and workers working) in the country will have to submit a new online application to ‘Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada’ (IRCC). Actually, earlier people used to go out of the country for a short time and come back and get the permit quickly, this is called flagpoling. By doing this the immigration process used to speed up. Flagpoling has been used for a long time to bypass the processing time for temporary resident work and study permits. Under flagpoling, people used to go to America and then come back to the country after spending some time there. This used to get them the permit quickly. Security will increase on the border: Canada The Canadian government says that by stopping flagpoling, the burden on the border will be reduced and security will also increase. Public Safety Minister David McGinty said, “This change will make work on the border easier. Canadian and American border officers will now be able to do the work for which they were trained.” Due to flagpoling, the burden on the border services of both Canada and America was increasing. Why was flagpoling stopped? According to CIC News, between April 2023 and March 2024, the CBSA observed more than 69,300 cases of flagpoling. Most of these were in the Pacific region, southern Ontario and Quebec. The CBSA has said that the border service is for people coming to Canada, not for those already present. Flagpoling was increasing the congestion at the border and causing delays in important work. “Strong Canada-US relations ensure that people and goods move safely across the border and keep our borders secure,” said Immigration Minister Marc Miller. He said the change will increase fairness, reduce congestion at the border and improve operations. Work is also being done to strengthen the Canada-US border. The government has spent $1.3 billion over six years on drones, helicopters and border surveillance. Addressing a media briefing, Sindh’s Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, said the public is not concerned about political posturing but about the problems posed by inflation. He said businesspeople, farmers, labourers, etc., are desperately seeking relief and are fed up with the populist politics. Referring to the grave situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Memon said despite the loss of 90 people in a tragic incident, the chief minister is not present in their midst. He questioned why the KP police, who are actively used in CM Gandapur’s rallies, is not being deployed in Parachinar where they are truly needed. Questioning the reckless use of provincial government machinery, he asked if the political and administrative machinery was supporting the families of the victims or planning to attack the capital. Criticising the priorities of the KP government, the Sindh senior minister asked them to prove a single successful, public initiative despite running the province for the last 12 years. He charged the political hierarchy of the KP with a misplaced focus that led to the attack on the Army Public School and the break-in at Bannu Jail which complicated the problems for the people. Had the provincial economy fared any better the people of the province would not have had to leave their homes in search of employment opportunities in Sindh or other provinces, the Sindh minister said. Against this backdrop, they are attempting to stir chaos in the country, Memon said. Sharjeel Memon said the disruptive politics of PTI are only aimed at destabilising the country. The ‘foreign leader’ has no concern for the countrymen and is busy fomenting chaos. He blamed the PTI for not even making a single demand for the betterment of the people except for seeking power for Imran Khan. Memon said when the PPP leadership including President Asif Ali Zardari and Faryal Talpur were arrested, the party did not engage in any illegal actions. Despite having a government in Sindh, they did not use government machinery against the federal capital. Terming the people as astute and aware, he said the people have seen through their designs. Being tired and frustrated they are not responding to the PTI calls for agitation. He said the time has come to stop disruptive politics of chaos and abusive language. The minister said people need relief from their daily hardships and need employment, health and education. The minister claimed that on the other hand as soon as the Pakistan Peoples Party came to power in Sindh, they began issuing Kisan Cards. The provincial government is working to provide free electricity to the people through solarisation. Additionally, houses are being constructed for 2.1 million people, and the government is single-mindedly focused on completing this project. Furthermore, they are striving to provide the best possible facilities for health and education to the public. He said there are signs of economic recovery with the improvement of the stock exchanges that are setting record volumes of business every day. The minister for Transport, and Mass Transit, said the Sindh government introduced Electric Vehicle (EV) buses in the country, followed by launching the Pink Bus service for women. He said work is underway on the Red Line and Yellow Line BRT projects. The government, Memon said also plans to introduce EV taxis to provide employment opportunities for the unemployed youth. In response to a question, the provincial minister said, at the behest of the PTI’s founder, his wife, Bushra Bibi, made a shameful statement regarding Saudi Arabia. Even the remaining PTI leadership tried to distance themselves from that stance against one of the best friends of the Pakistani people. To another question, Sharjeel Memon said the PPP has never opposed talks while on the other hand, Imran Khan is the biggest obstacle to dialogue. Regarding Chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s stance on the proposed canals from the Indus, the provincial minister said that is in line with the policy of the Pakistan People’s Party and the Sindh government. He mentioned that the Sindh Chief Minister has also written letters to the federal government on this issue. Memon said the PPP Chairman is clear about water projects and elaborated that the issue should be resolved through negotiations. He said the Sindh government will never compromise on the rights of farmers. The Sindh senior minister said as long as the smaller provinces’ are objecting to the canal issue, the project should not be taken up.
