In an apparent effort to reduce the headaches caused by airport line cutting, American has rolled out boarding technology that alerts gate agents with an audible sound if a passenger tries to scan a ticket ahead of their assigned group. This new software won't accept a boarding pass before the group it's assigned to is called, so customers who get to the gate prematurely will be asked to go back and wait their turn. As of Wednesday, the airline announced, the technology is now being used in more than 100 U.S. airports that American flies out of. The official expansion arrives after successful tests in three of these locations — Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Tucson International Airport. The initial response from customers and American employees "has exceeded our expectations," Julie Rath, American’s senior vice president of airport operations, reservations and service recovery, said in a statement. She added that the airline is “thrilled" to have the technology up and running ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday . American got lots of attention when it unveiled its gate-control testing last month. Analysts say that isn't surprising. It's no secret that line cutting in airports hits a nerve. Whether intentional or not, just about every air traveler has witnessed it, noted Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group. It can add to frustrations in what can already be a tense environment, with particular anxiety around passengers wanting to sit together or rushing for some overhead bin space. Harteveldt doesn't see American's recent move as “shaming” customers who cut the line. “What it is intended to do is bring order out of chaos,” he said. "And I hope it will defuse any potential flare ups of anger (from) people who simply think they're entitled to board out of turn .... It’s just not fair." Harteveldt added that he thinks this change will enhance the experiences of both customers and gate agents. Others say more time will tell. Seth Miller, editor and founder of air travel experience analysis site PaxEx.aero , said he can see the benefits of more orderly and universal gate-control enforcement, particularly for airlines. But he said he isn't “100% convinced this is perfect for passengers" just yet. Families, for example, might be booked on several different reservations across more than one group, he said. Airlines typically have workarounds for that, and American noted Wednesday that customers traveling with a companion in an earlier group can simply have a gate agent “override the alert” to continue boarding. Still, Miller said, “you have to go through the extra hoops.” And a difficult customer still might choose to hold up the line and argue when they're not allowed to board, he added. Another question is whether customers who encounter a beep will walk away feeling embarrassed. But Harteveldt said he was happy to learn that American's alert is “not a bellowing sound that can be heard throughout the terminal,” or accompanied by your name read over a loudspeaker, noting that this is important to avoid feelings of shame. Expanding this technology just a week before peak Thanksgiving travel could be “both good and bad,” Harteveldt adds. On one hand, the tech could help significantly improve the boarding process during such a busy time, he said, but airport employees might also have appreciated more time to prepare. Both Miller and Harteveldt said they wouldn't be surprised if other carriers soon follow American's lead. Headaches over airport line cutting are far from new. While maybe not to the extent of American's new tech, Miller noted he's seen gate agents from other airlines ask people to leave a line and wait for their group. Harteveldt added that he's been to some airports in Asia and Europe with “sliding doors” that ensure passengers are in the right group before boarding a plane. The more than 100 airports that American is now using its gate-control technology in are all spoke, or non-hub, locations — including Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airline says it expects to further expand to its hubs and other airports in the coming months.

The Dallas Cowboys entered Week 12 and expected to lose to the Washington Commanders . Instead, they pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the week, beating their divisional rival 34-26 . KaVontae Turpin played a major role in the victory. The third-year wide receiver made one of the most important plays of Dallas' season, returning a kickoff 99 yards for a game-winning score late in the fourth quarter. The Commanders had just cut the Cowboys ' lead to 20-17 after a Zach Ertz touchdown and a Jayden Daniels 2-point conversion. Austin Seibert 's kickoff landed short of the end-zone and bounced through Turpin's legs, eliciting a gasp from the crowd. Turpin gathered the ball at the 1-yard line before starting upfield. He ran about 10 yards before he executed a perfect spin move to evade two defenders. From there, he burst through an open lane and sped into the end-zone without being touched. 2025 NFL MOCK DRAFT: QBs Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward crack top five NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more. Below is a look at Turpin's impressive play, which gave the Cowboys a 27-17 lead: Turpin's return was part of the overarching theme of Sunday's game. Dallas' special teams dominated Washington's, as the Commanders allowed two kick return touchdowns, missed two extra points and missed a field goal in its eight-point loss. Turpin's touchdown also ended up being the game-winning score. It gave the Cowboys a 27-17 lead that they nearly blew, as the Commanders scored on each of their next two possessions. That included a Terry McLaurin touchdown with 21 seconds left that cut Dallas' lead to 27-26. However, one of Washington's two missed extra points came after the McLaurin score. That allowed Dallas to snap its five-game losing streak and build momentum ahead of the team's Thanksgiving Day matchup with the New York Giants . That came in Week 11 of the 2024 NFL season after he posted a top speed of 22.36 mph on his 64-yard touchdown against the Houston Texans .

South Africans cut back on festive cheer this holiday season to make ends meetNearly 3 in 4 Americans worried they may not get promised Social Security paymentsIran said on Sunday that it would hold nuclear talks in the coming days with the three European countries that initiated a censure resolution against it adopted by the UN's atomic watchdog. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the meeting of the deputy foreign ministers of Iran, France, Germany and the United Kingdom would take place on Friday, without specifying a venue. "A range of regional and international issues and topics, including the issues of Palestine and Lebanon, as well as the nuclear issue, will be discussed," the spokesman said in a foreign ministry statement. Baghaei described the upcoming meeting as a continuation of talks held with the countries in September on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. On Thursday, the 35-nation board of governors of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution denouncing Iran for what it called a lack of cooperation. The move came as tensions ran high over Iran's atomic programme, which critics fear is aimed at developing a nuclear weapon -- something Tehran has repeatedly denied. In response to the resolution, Iran announced it was launching a "series of new and advanced centrifuges". Centrifuges enrich uranium transformed into gas by rotating it at very high speed, increasing the proportion of fissile isotope material (U-235). "We will substantially increase the enrichment capacity with the utilisation of different types of advanced machines," Behrouz Kamalvandi, Iran's atomic energy organisation spokesman, told state TV. The country, however, also said it planned to continue its "technical and safeguards cooperation with the IAEA". During a recent visit to Tehran by IAEA head Rafael Grossi, Iran agreed to the agency's demand to cap its sensitive stock of near weapons-grade uranium enriched up to 60 percent purity. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in power since July and a supporter of dialogue with Western countries, has said he wants to remove "doubts and ambiguities" about his country's nuclear programme. In 2015, Iran and world powers reached an agreement that saw the easing of international sanctions on Tehran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme. But the United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018 under then-president Donald Trump and reimposed biting economic sanctions, which prompted Iran to begin rolling back on its own commitments. On Sunday afternoon, the United Kingdom confirmed the upcoming meeting between Iran and the three European countries. "We remain committed to taking every diplomatic step to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, including through snapback if necessary," London's Foreign Office said. The 2015 deal contains a "snapback" mechanism that can be triggered in case of "significant non-performance" of commitments by Iran, allowing many sanctions to be reimposed. Ali Vaez, an Iran expert with the International Crisis Group think tank, told AFP that Friday's meeting was set to happen earlier, but "those plans were derailed as a result of Iran-Israel tensions" over the Gaza war. Though the parties will be meeting "without knowing what the incoming Trump administration wants to do", Vaez said that "after a lose-lose cycle of mutual escalation, now both sides are back to realising that engagement might be the least costly option." Tehran has since 2021 decreased its cooperation with the IAEA by deactivating surveillance devices monitoring the nuclear programme and barring UN inspectors. At the same time, it has increased its stockpiles of enriched uranium and the level of enrichment to 60 percent. That level is close, according to the IAEA, to the 90 percent-plus threshold required for a nuclear warhead, and substantially higher than the 3.67 percent limit it agreed to in 2015. pdm/smw/ami

Mumbai: The BJP logged the highest vote share of 26.77 per cent in the Maharashtra assembly elections, winning 132 out of 149 seats it had contested and garnering 17,293,650 votes, as per ECI data. The BJP’s 132-seat haul marked a hat-trick of crossing the 100-seat mark in assembly elections. The saffron party had bagged 122 seats in the 2014 elections, which it contested solo without undivided Shiv Sena, and 105 seats in 2019 polls which it faced with the former ally Shiv Sena on its side. The BJP’s stellar performance at Maharashtra hustings, results of which were declared on Saturday, saw the party reaping a rich harvest of 132 seats in the 288-member House. Its Mahayuti partners Shiv Sena and NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar won 57 and 41 seats, respectively. The Congress, which won only 16 out of 101 seats it had contested, came a distant second with a 12.42 per cent vote share. The Grand Old Party polled 8,020,921 votes. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s tally of 57 seats out of 81 it had contested saw a vote share of 12.38 per cent and 7,996,930 votes. Interestingly, the vote share of NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and the quantum of votes polled for the party surpassed the rival NCP faction despite the former’s rout in the elections. The NCP (SP) contested 86 seats but won only 10 with an 11.28 per cent vote share and 7,287,797 votes. In contrast, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP registered a 9.01% vote share despite winning 41 of the 59 seats it had contested and polling 5,816,566 votes. The rival Shiv Sena (UBT), which won 20 seats, logged a vote share of 9.96 per cent and polled 6,433,013 votes. At 4,61,886, NOTA votes dropped to 0.72 per cent in Maharashtra. A voter turnout of 66.05 per cent was recorded for the state assembly elections held on November 20, up from 61.1 per cent in 2019, according to Election Commission officials.

Sarah Rumpf-WhittenThe Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has sought reforms in India's Priority Sector Lending (PSL) framework to enable the setting up of more Development Finance Institutions (DFI) to provide funds to new and emerging sectors such as digital infrastructure, green initiatives, healthcare, and innovative manufacturing. "The current Development Finance Institutions like SIDBI and NABFID have their roles cut out as they have earmarked sectors to finance. Therefore, CII has suggested setting up of a high-level committee to look at the revision of Priority Sector Lending norms and also explore the need for any new DFIs to cater to some of the new and emerging sectors," the CII said in a statement on Sunday. Despite its massive success, the PSL framework requires regular recalibration to remain relevant. This recalibration is essential to ensure that the financial resources are optimally distributed, in harmony with our vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the statement said. For instance, while agriculture contributes 14 per cent of the GDP today, its PSL allocation remains at 18 per cent, unchanged from when its GDP share exceeded 30 per cent. Similarly, sectors like infrastructure and innovative manufacturing lack adequate PSL focus despite their potential to drive economic growth, it added. India’s economy has evolved rapidly over the past few decades, with employment focus shifting to newer sectors because of increased education levels in the society and higher disposable incomes, the statement said. The PSL is a vital policy tool in India, aimed at ensuring that key sectors crucial to the nation’s development receive adequate financial support. Mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), PSL obligates banks to allocate a specified proportion of their loans to sectors such as agriculture, education, housing, and small industries. The framework ensures equitable credit distribution, contributing to the socio-economic growth of underserved areas. CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said: "Sectors like agriculture have reduced contribution to GDP from 30 per cent in the 1990s to about 14 per cent now. Hence, it is time that the Priority Sector Lending (PSL) framework be reviewed every 3-4 years to align based on emerging priorities and PSL allocations should be in line with GDP contributions and sectoral growth potential. For instance, we could look at the inclusion of Emerging and High-Impact Sectors, including digital infrastructure, green initiatives, healthcare, and innovative manufacturing." The industry chamber has, therefore, recommended inclusion in PSL of sectors like green energy projects, electric vehicles, and climate-resilient agriculture along with sectors like digital technologies, artificial intelligence and healthcare innovation. The CII has further pointed out that besides the above sectors, Infrastructure and manufacturing are poised to make substantial contributions to India’s economic growth. It said that its recommendation is that of transition to outcome-based metrics, where the focus needs to shift from absolute lending targets to measurable developmental outcomes, ensuring impact-driven credit distribution.

By Danielle AbrilThe Washington Post Rising social media start-up Bluesky reached more than 25 million users in recent months, at one point adding a million users a day. Behind the scenes is a small team of 20 people – who all work remotely. Bluesky, which evolved from a Twitter research project to an independent entity in 2022, chose remote work because it needed specialized engineers from North America and abroad, its executives say. Employees write proposals that the team debates, looking for holes in ideas. They gather in person one week a quarter and in smaller groups throughout the year to foster collaboration. “When somebody tosses out an idea, I say, ‘Write a proposal!’” said Paul Frazee, Bluesky’s chief technology officer, who said the company’s way of working makes him confident in remote work indefinitely. “In some ways, this was the only way we could do this,” added Rose Wang, Bluesky’s chief operations officer. Almost five years after the pandemic forced many to work remotely or hybrid, companies across the country are wrestling with what works for their cultures, workforces and future. Some are enforcing five-day office mandates, arguing that innovation, collaboration and productivity are best accomplished in person. But others are reinventing how work gets done after doubling down on remote and hybrid models. In November, the share of people working fully on-site had decreased 2.8 percentage points from 79.5 percent during the same time last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those who worked remotely, at least part time, also jumped 2.8 percentage points from 20.5 percent. The debate over work flexibility continues to ignite controversy, spurring employee protests, legal filings and even resignations. While companies implementing office mandates say they improve performance, a recent Gallup poll found that a majority of workers prefer hybrid work, saying it reduces burnout, improves productivity and encourages work-life balance. Companies that recently required workers to return to the office five days a week have garnered attention, including Amazon, whose founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post. The Post is also asking workers to return to the office five days a week. Goldman Sachs’ CEO David Solomon, one of the first to call workers back full time in 2021, also cited innovation and collaboration as reasons for the mandate. President-elect Donald Trump has also said he’ll call federal workers back to the office five days a week. “We’ve observed that it’s easier for our teammates to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture; collaborating, brainstorming, and inventing are simpler and more effective; teaching and learning from one another are more seamless; and, teams tend to be better connected to one another,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said when announcing the policy in September. Asked to provide a comment for this story, Amazon pointed to Jassy’s announcement. Goldman Sachs declined to comment. Related Articles Companies that embrace hybrid and remote work options tend to be highly online and have workers whose jobs don’t necessarily depend on location like those in blue-collar and health-care positions do. They acknowledge that it takes effort to rethink structure, communication, physical space and access to documents and colleagues. Some downsized their office footprint and invested the savings in helping teams gather when it makes most sense. They also say it can be a challenge to maintain momentum, align goals, foster communication, promote mentoring and support people’s sense of belonging. For Pinterest, the focus on changing how managers supervise and support became critical, said Sara Phillips-Broadhurst, the company’s senior director of people strategy and innovation. So offering managers new training has been key. Atlassian, a collaboration software company, determined it needed a way for everyone to better align on goals. So every Friday, teams create a tweet-length update on every goal and project for leaders and other teams to review the following Monday. “It gives the whole company the chance to understand what’s happening at any given time,” said Annie Dean, vice president of Atlassian’s Team Anywhere, the organization charged with overseeing distributed work. “So many problems companies have are because of silos.” Despite initial challenges, Kai Swavely, senior director of people technology at Pinterest, said the company’s policy called PinFlex, which allows workers to choose where they work if their jobs can be done anywhere, has helped expand its ability to innovate. After making its annual hackathon virtual in 2023, that year’s winning idea came from a Pinterest employee outside the United States and brought together departments to develop an internally “beloved” tool that helps workers find information. “Before the pandemic, you had to be in San Francisco to participate,” she said. “There was an unrealized limitation of time zone, country and teams you had never been exposed to.” The key to doing the best work in distributed environments is guidance and experimentation, Phillips-Broadhurst said. That includes tasking leaders with being intentional about asking employees to meet in person. It also means using a mix of traditional internal information hubs, messaging apps and emerging tech such as artificial intelligence for support. Atlassian reduced its office footprint and reinvested the savings in bringing employees together. It has a culture of documentation, using shared documents, messaging systems and video to help employees capture meetings and comments and collaborate even though they may work at different times. “It doesn’t make sense to me, in the age of AI, our focus is being spent on where people sit,” Dean said. “We have to intentionally design the new way forward.” Earlier this year, Atlassian released Rovo, its first AI product built and shipped within six months, marking the fastest product development at the company to date. Atlassian was able to move about 200 employees to the project and hire 200 more within that time frame. Most meetings were recorded and documented, and the shared goals and progress tracking made it possible to move faster, said Jamil Valliani, Atlassian vice president and head of AI products. “At first, it was like, ‘I have to write more?’” he said. “If you approach it that way, then of course you’re going to see nothing but problems. You’re not going to see that you increase your reach.” Allowing employees to work remotely also has helped Yelp become more efficient, said Craig Saldanha, chief product officer. About 87 percent of workers said they were more productive, he said. With the new model, Yelp brings new features to market 60 percent faster, Saldanha said. A lot of the efficiency, he said, came from formalizing processes already happening on an ad hoc basis. In distributed environments, being clear about goals and expectations impacts the efficiency of the team. Related Articles “What came during the pandemic was this realization that innovation comes from clarity rather than proximity,” he said. The ability for people to collaborate across teams and geographies has allowed people to innovate in ways that didn’t happen before, Saldanha said. For example, Yelp’s new AI assistant came from a group of distributed engineers who developed the idea during an online hackathon. Airbnb is also experiencing a jump in productivity, which Iain Roberts, head of people and culture, credits in part to the company’s flexible work policy. Airbnb has released 535 updates in the past three years, and the scale of each launch has increased every year, he said. Strategic gatherings, guidelines and specially designed spaces have helped the company navigate the new environment. “Our employees feel that the model works for them, and we’re able to achieve more,” he said. Those are the “leading indicators that this is working.” For H&R Block, which changed its initial office plan to allow people to work remotely part time, company data showed collaboration, employee engagement and productivity had not declined in remote work, said Tiffany Monroe, H&R Block’s chief people and culture officer. So H&R Block created a playbook that offered tips for managing distributed work, including when to host meetings or check in with direct reports, where documents are stored, and what tools to use for collaboration and communication. It also hosted trainings and question-and-answer sessions. “When we see things that may be shifting, as leaders, we shift,” Monroe said, adding that innovation won’t suffer if companies try “to be more thoughtful.” Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford University economics professor who studies remote work, said flexible work can allow companies to get better talent by investing in people rather than spaces. It also gives workers more time for deep thinking that can lead to better results, though he suggests companies should also ensure workers spend some time together in person. Deborah Lovich, future of work fellow at Boston Consulting Group’s Henderson Institute think tank, said many companies prefer the office-based model of working because it’s familiar, even though the pandemic showed that remote or hybrid models can be successful. In her view, those companies are becoming less employee-centric, to their detriment. “It completely demoralizes your talent,” she said. “There’s nothing that says ‘I don’t trust you’ like an RTO mandate – other than an RTO mandate tracking badge swipes.”Teen actor Hudson Meek, who appeared in ‘Baby Driver,’ dies after falling from moving vehicle

Manchin, Sinema prevent Democrats from locking in majority on labor board through 2026 WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats failed in their bid to confirm a Democratic member of the National Labor Relations Board after the Senate rejected a razor-thin vote that hinged on the pivotal rejections of independent Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona. If the nomination had been successful, the board would have had a Democratic majority until 2026. President-elect Donald Trump will now have a chance to nominate a replacement. The NLRB is a government agency that handles labor relations and unionization in the workplace. It also has the power to investigate potential unfair labor practices, meaning its leadership is highly scrutinized by business interests and labor groups. The failed vote is another blow to Senate Democrats and outgoing President Joe Biden's agenda. Arizona AG sues Saudi firm over 'excessive' groundwater pumping, saying it's a public nuisance PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes says she is suing a Saudi Arabian agribusiness over what she calls “excessive pumping” of groundwater. She alleges that the Fondomonte alfalfa farm in western Arizona is violating a public nuisance law even though the area has no groundwater pumping regulations. Mayes said Wednesday that Fondomonte's use of groundwater threatens the public health, safety and infrastructure of local communities in rural La Paz County. It's Arizona's latest action against foreign companies that use huge amounts of groundwater to grow thirsty forage crops for export. The Associated Press emailed Fondomonte seeking a response to the lawsuit. US inflation ticked up last month as some price pressures remain persistent WASHINGTON (AP) — Fueled by pricier used cars, hotel rooms and groceries, inflation in the United States moved slightly higher last month in the latest sign that some price pressures remain elevated. Consumer prices rose 2.7% in November from a year earlier, up from a yearly figure of 2.6% in October. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, so-called core prices increased 3.3%. Measured month to month, prices climbed 0.3% from October to November, the biggest such increase since April. Wednesday’s inflation figures are the final major piece of data Federal Reserve officials will consider before they meet next week to decide on interest rates. The November increase won’t likely be enough to discourage the officials from cutting their key rate by a quarter-point. Albertsons sues Kroger for failing to win approval of their proposed supermarket merger Kroger and Albertsons’ plan for the largest U.S. supermarket merger in history has crumbled. The two companies have accused each other of not doing enough to push their proposed alliance through, and Albertsons pulled out of the $24.6 billion deal on Wednesday. The bitter breakup came the day after a federal judge in Oregon and a state judge in Washington issued injunctions to block the merger, saying that combining the two grocery chains could reduce competition and harm consumers. Albertsons is now suing Kroger, seeking a $600 million termination fee, as well as billions of dollars in legal fees and lost shareholder value. Kroger says the legal claims are “baseless.” Donald Trump will ring the New York Stock Exchange bell as he's named Time's Person of the Year NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is expected to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange for the first time and be named Time magazine's Person of the Year. Thursday's events will be a notable moment of twin recognitions for Trump, a born-and-bred New Yorker who has long seen praise from the business world and media as a sign of success. Four people with knowledge of his plans told The Associated Press that Trump was expected to be on Wall Street on Thursday to mark the ceremonial start of the day's trading, while a person familiar with the selection confirmed that Trump had been selected as Time's Person of the Year. Supreme Court allows investors' class action to proceed against microchip company Nvidia WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing a class-action lawsuit that accuses Nvidia of misleading investors about its past dependence on selling computer chips for the mining of volatile cryptocurrency to proceed. The court’s decision Wednesday comes the same week that China said it is investigating the the microchip company over suspected violations of Chinese anti-monopoly laws. The justices heard arguments four weeks ago in Nvidia’s bid to shut down the lawsuit, then decided that they were wrong to take up the case in the first place. They dismissed the company’s appeal, leaving in place an appellate ruling allowing the case to go forward. Apple's latest iPhones get the gift of more AI as holiday shopping season heats up SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is pumping more artificial intelligence into the latest iPhones during the holiday shopping season. It comes in the form of a free software update that includes a feature that enables users to create customized emojis within a matter of seconds. The Wednesday release of the iPhone’s upgraded operating system extends Apple’s expansion into AI months after rivals such as Samsung and Google began implanting the revolutionary on their devices. The update builds upon another one that came out in late October. The latest round of AI tricks includes “Genmojis,” Apple’s description of emojis that iPhone users will be able to ask the technology to create and then share. EU targets Russia's ghost fleet shipping oil in a new round of sanctions BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union envoys have agreed a new raft of sanctions against Russia over its war on Ukraine. The EU's Hungarian presidency said Wednesday that the measures will target in particular a vast shadow fleet of ships that Moscow is exploiting to skirt restrictions on transporting oil and fuel. The sanctions are aimed at about 50 of what are routinely decrepit ships. The sanctions will hit more officials and entities alleged to be helping Russia to improve its military technology by evading export restrictions. EU foreign ministers are set to formally adopt the sanctions package on Monday. Can ordinary citizens solve our toughest problems? BEND, OREGON (AP) — Research shows Americans are frustrated with what they perceive as aloofness and gridlock within civic institutions. Citizen assemblies may be able to help. The groups which have direct involvement in decision-making can help “overcome polarization and strengthen societal cohesion,” says Claudia Chwalisz, founder of DemocracyNext. Her nonprofit, launched in Paris in 2022, champions such assemblies worldwide, hoping they can “create the democratic spaces for everyday people to grapple with the complexity of policy issues, listen to one another, and find common ground.” In Europe, examples of such changes abound. In the United States, results are spottier. Making a $1B investment in the US? Trump pledges expedited permits — but there are hurdles WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is promising expedited federal permits for energy projects and other construction worth more than $1 billion. But like other Trump plans, the idea is likely to run into regulatory and legislative hurdles, including a landmark law that requires federal agencies to consider the environmental impact before deciding on major projects. Environmental groups called the plan a clear violation of the National Environmental Policy Act. The chief policy advocacy officer at the Natural Resources Defense Council says Trump should be careful what he wishes for. She said, "What if someone wants to build a waste incinerator next to Mar-a-Lago or a coal mine next to Bedminster golf course?”

ATLANTA — The New York City Police Department, with assistance from Atlanta Police and surrounding law enforcement jurisdictions, have searched the bus terminal in Downtown Atlanta and possibly another in metro Atlanta in connection with the investigation into the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, NBC 4 New York reported. NBC 4 New York said those details came from a senior Georgia official familiar with the investigation. The update comes after authorities said that before the shooting, the gunman arrived at Manhattan’s main bus terminal on a Greyhound bus that originated in Atlanta. It's not clear whether he embarked there or one of the other stops along the route. The Atlanta Police Department said Friday it was contacted by NYPD to provide assistance as needed in the case. The Atlanta FBI office also said it is assisting NYPD in the investigation. Meanwhile, Marietta Police tells 11Alive that it is not part of the investigation and has no knowledge of case details at this time. The search for the gunman continues after the Dec. 4 shooting that killed Thompson. Police don’t know who he is, where he is, or why he did it — though they believe the shooting was a targeted attack. “The net is tightening,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday. Hours after he spoke, police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. Officers have been scouring the park for days for any possible clues and found his bag there Friday. Police believe the gunman left New York after the shooting by bus. As the search continues, law enforcement is working to retrace the gunman's potential steps. RELATED: Search for UnitedHealthcare CEO's killer yields evidence, but few answers Hundreds of detectives are combing through video recordings and social media, vetting tips from the public and interviewing people who might have information, including Thompson’s family and coworkers and the shooter’s randomly assigned roommates at the Manhattan hostel where he stayed. The shooter paid cash at the hostel, presented what police believe was a fake ID and is believed to have paid cash for taxi rides and other transactions. He didn't speak to others at the hostel and almost always kept his face covered with a mask. Investigators did come across security camera images of a moment where the person wanted for questioning briefly showed his face soon after arriving in New York on Nov. 24. But even with those photos distributed by police, officers still haven't been able to identify him. Thompson was killed as he arrived at the New York Hilton Midtown. He was there to attend a conference. Editor's note: A previous version of this story reported that investigators searched a bus terminal in Marietta. Marietta police told 11Alive Sunday that it is not involved in the investigation and did not assist in the search. 11Alive is working to clarify which agencies were involved in the search. Material from the Associated Press was used to provide more information about the case.Victoria Police are investigating an incident in the downtown core on Christmas Eve, involving a stolen vehicle that evaded officers before being recovered. Around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 24, officers received a call from the owners of a stolen vehicle that it had been spotted being driven downtown, Vic PD confirmed in an email to Victoria News. Officers located the vehicle and moved into position behind it. However, the driver ran a red light, which caused officers to end their pursuit for public safety reasons. Police located the stolen vehicle again, a few moments later, immobile. In an attempt to prevent the individual from fleeing further, officers executed a manoeuvre which resulted in the stolen vehicle losing one of its tires. Despite the damage, the vehicle managed to flee the scene on three wheels. The pursuit resumed as the stolen vehicle sped down some of Victoria's busiest arteries. Many social media users commented on the event and posted videos of the sighting. “Holy there is a guy driving a three-wheeled 4x4 down Douglas sparks flying with two dozen cops chasing them they almost hit us,” said Facebook user Takuma Valcourt. VicPD confirmed that the stolen vehicle was later recovered, and the investigation remains ongoing.President-elect Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson to meet at Army-Navy GameIsrael’s barbaric war on Gaza people must end, says South African president

BALTIMORE — The bright lights of drone-like objects lighting up the night sky have been spotted in Maryland, prompting lawmakers, federal agencies and even a former governor to search for answers. “I am aware of reports of numerous apparent drone sightings over the Delmarva Peninsula and in Salisbury, Maryland, in my district,” Maryland Republican Congressman Andy Harris told The Baltimore Sun Saturday. “We need transparency now from the White House to find out if these drones are a threat to our national security, and if they are, we need to take proper corrective action immediately.” This increased activity first made national headlines in New Jersey, and now widespread questions have been raised about the origin of the drones, which also have been spotted in Pennsylvania and New York. Federal officials have not ruled out that some of the objects could be airplanes or helicopters. However, the drones do not appear to be a threat to national security — for the time being. “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus,” the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI said in a joint statement. “The FBI, DHS and our federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.” Precautions are being taken. Saturday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced a temporary flight restriction in place for the annual Army-Navy game at Northwest Stadium in Landover. The area was considered a “No Drone Zone” for a 2-nautical-mile radius around the stadium and up to 2,000 feet above ground level. Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan expressed his concerns about the drone activity on social media after claiming he spotted an object in the sky around 9:45 p.m. Thursday near his Davidsonville home. He sees this phenomenon as a growing problem in Maryland and throughout the U.S. “Like many who have observed these drones, I do not know if this increasing activity over our skies is a threat to public safety or national security,” Hogan wrote on X. “But the public is growing increasingly concerned and frustrated with the complete lack of transparency and the dismissive attitude of the federal government. The government has the ability to track these from their point of origin but has mounted a negligent response. People are rightfully clamoring for answers, but aren’t getting any.” Other drone sightings have been reported in the Woodberry neighborhood of Baltimore and Prince Frederick in Calvert County. The drone activity is also a concern among industry experts. Eric Brown, founder and CEO of Imperio Consulting, spent 24 years in the Special Forces as a Green Beret and has seen firsthand the evolution of drone technology. If drones are appearing in areas where they shouldn’t, especially near critical infrastructure, it’s a signal that someone is gathering information or testing boundaries. This would naturally be a concern for any government agency tasked with ensuring public safety and national security, according to Brown. “The potential risks depend on how the drones are used. In combat, drones were essential for gathering intelligence and ensuring mission success, but that same technology could be used for surveillance of sensitive locations,” Brown told The Baltimore Sun. “Drones can also deliver payloads, as we utilized them to carry ordnance in certain missions. While such use requires precision and authorization in military contexts, the potential for misuse in civilian settings — accidentally or intentionally — is significant.” Yashin Manraj, CEO of Pvotal Technologies, said the surge in national interest and curiosity has attracted many copycats who are now flying their FAA-compliant drones to “troll” the media. The most effective way would be to identify the drone handlers and penalize them in a public setting to inform and quell the fears related to this activity, he said. “We hope that lawmakers take a nuanced approach and balance the hysteria with a concerted effort to empower the U.S. technological hegemony to extend to drones rather than letting other countries get ahead while we curtail our growth and progress for political reasons,” Manraj said. Melissa Swisher, the chief revenue officer at SkySafe, said rising drone activity is a serious concern for both local and federal governments due to the increasing risks posed to public safety and critical infrastructure. Unauthorized drones can disrupt operations at airports, power plants, water treatment facilities and even military bases. These incidents not only endanger lives but can also lead to significant economic and operational disruptions. Governments are under pressure to address these threats while managing the growing adoption of drones in legitimate industries, she said. “The dangers of drones are wide-ranging. Unauthorized drones can be used for espionage, and weaponized to damage power grids, disrupt airspace, endanger aircraft, jeopardize public events, smuggle contraband into secure facilities, and deliver harmful payloads,” Swisher told The Baltimore Sun. “They also pose a surveillance risk, potentially violating individual privacy and compromising sensitive operations or infrastructure.” Hogan has demanded answers. The mystery of these objects has created unease among residents. “We are being told that neither the White House, the military, the FBI, nor Homeland Security have any idea what they are, where they came from, or who has launched or is controlling them — and that they pose no threat,” Hogan wrote on X. “That response is entirely unacceptable. I join with the growing bipartisan chorus of leaders demanding that the federal government immediately address this issue. The American people deserve answers and action now.” Visit baltimoresun.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

Musk’s flights this year paint a picture of his political ambitions. One of his jets took its first trip to Palm Beach, where Mar-a-Lago is located, on February 17. A few months later, The Wall Street Journal revealed that Trump and Musk had discussed what Musk’s role in a new administration might be. Since the election, Musk’s planes have taken 25 flights to and from Palm Beach. Musk’s planes also took 13 trips to and from swing states, where he was campaigning for Trump, and made 10 flights to and from the Washington, D.C., area.Stephen Miller, an influential adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, has revealed that the incoming administration will close the border down and begin mass deportations of illegal immigrants on the first day in office. In an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News on Sunday, the immigration hardliner, who is Trump’s pick for his deputy chief of staff for policy, said there will be unprecedented investment into stopping immigration. He described how Republicans in Congress such as Lindsey Graham were preparing a full funding package that would be the “most significant border security investment in American history.” “That would mean a historic increase in border agents, a pay raise for both full funding for military operations, full funding for ice beds, full funding for air marine operations, full funding for all of the barriers and technology that you need to ensure there’s never another got away entering this country,” he said. “Now, President Trump, regardless on day one, is going to issue a series of executive orders that seal the border shut and begin the largest deportation operation in American history. “Some of the Republicans have been talking about it for decades. But with Donald Trump, this is something that is going to happen. It’ll be the most important and significant, as I said, domestic policy achievement in half a century. Then the plan, as Senator Thune has laid out as incoming majority leader... would be to move immediately at that point.” Stephen Miller ( ) explains Trump will do two things at the same time, seal the border and begin mass deportation with a series of executive actions on day one. — Simon Ateba (@simonateba) Miller also said the incoming administration had plans to make sweeping reforms to tax, trade and manufacturing. He was light on details on what those policies would involve. “With the two or three seat majority in the House, obviously that’s going to take some time,” he admitted. “Nobody, I repeat, nobody, is even talking about or considering delaying tax [reform]. “What the Senate has talked about doing is giving the President within a week or two of taking the oath of office the most significant domestic policy achievement in at least 50 years, our border patrol, our ICE officers, and every element of our domestic security operation will be fully funded to take down the cartels and eradicate the criminal gang threat in this country, once and for all.”Joel Embiid scores 31 in return to the 76ers' starting lineup against the Bulls

The bill is traditionally strongly bipartisan, but some Democratic lawmakers opposed the inclusion of a ban on transgender medical treatments for children of military members if such treatment could result in sterilization. It passed by a vote of 281-140 and next moves to the Senate, where lawmakers sought a bigger boost in defense spending than the current measure allows. Lawmakers are touting the bill's 14.5% pay raise for junior enlisted service members and a 4.5% increase for others as key to improving the quality of life for those serving in the U.S. military. Those serving as junior enlisted personnel are in pay grades that generally track with their first enlistment term. Lawmakers said service member pay failed to remain competitive with the private sector, forcing many military families to rely on food banks and government assistance programs to put food on the table. The bill also provides significant new resources for child care and housing. "No service member should have to live in squalid conditions and no military family should have to rely on food stamps to feed their children, but that's exactly what many of our service members are experiencing, especially the junior enlisted," said Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. "This bill goes a long way to fixing that." The bill sets key Pentagon policy that lawmakers will attempt to fund through a follow-up appropriations bill. The overall spending tracks the numbers established in a 2023 agreement that then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., reached with President Joe Biden to increase the nation's borrowing authority and avoid a federal default in exchange for spending restraints. Many senators had wanted to increase defense spending some $25 billion above what was called for in that agreement, but those efforts failed. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who is expected to serve as the next chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the overall spending level was a "tremendous loss for our national defense," though he agreed with many provisions within the bill. "We need to make a generational investment to deter the Axis of Aggressors. I will not cease work with my congressional colleagues, the Trump administration, and others until we achieve it," Wicker said. House Republicans don't want to go above the McCarthy-Biden agreement for defense spending and are looking to go way below it for many non-defense programs. They are also focused on cultural issues. The bill prohibits funding for teaching critical race theory in the military and prohibits TRICARE health plans from covering gender dysphoria treatment for children under 18 if that treatment could result in sterilization. Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the ranking Democratic member of the House Armed Services Committee, said minors dealing with gender dysphoria is a "very real problem." He said the treatments available, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy, have proven effective at helping young people dealing with suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression. "These treatments changed their lives and in many cases saved their lives," Smith said. "And in this bill, we decided we're going to bar service members' children from having access to that." Smith said the number of minors in service member families receiving transgender medical care extends into the thousands. He could have supported a study asking medical experts to determine whether such treatments are too often used, but a ban on health insurance coverage went too far. He said Speaker Mike Johnson's office insisted on the ban and said the provision "taints an otherwise excellent piece of legislation." Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, called the ban a step in the right direction, saying, "I think these questions need to be pulled out of the debate of defense, so we can get back to the business of defending the United States of America without having to deal with social engineering debates." Smith said he agrees with Roy that lawmakers should be focused on the military and not on cultural conflicts, "and yet, here it is in this bill." Branden Marty, a Navy veteran who served for 13 years, said the loss of health coverage for transgender medical treatments could prompt some with valuable experience to leave the military, affecting national security because "we already struggle from a recruiting and retention standpoint." He also said the bill could regularly force service members into difficult choices financially. "It will be tough for a lot of them because of out-of-pocket expenses, especially enlisted members who we know already struggle with food insecurity," said Marty, the father of a transgender teenager. "They don't get paid very much, so they're going to be making a lot of choices on a day-to-day, tactical level." Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, said his team did not tell Democrats how to vote on the bill. "There's a lot of positive things in the National Defense Authorization Act that were negotiated in a bipartisan way, and there are some troubling provisions in a few areas as well," Jeffries said. Overall, 81 Democrats voted for the bill and 124 against it. On the Republican side, 200 voted for the bill and 16 against it. "It's disappointing to see 124 of my Democrat colleagues vote against our brave men and women in uniform over policies that have nothing to do with their intended mission," Johnson, R-La., said. The defense policy bill also looks to strengthen deterrence against China. It calls for investing $15.6 billion to build military capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region. The Biden administration requested about $10 billion. On Israel, the bill, among other things, includes an expansion of U.S. joint military exercises with Israel and a prohibition on the Pentagon citing casualty data from Hamas. The defense policy bill is one of the final measures that lawmakers view as a must-pass before making way for a new Congress in January.

President-elect Donald Trump and his Republican accomplices relentlessly attacked the rule of law, a basic foundation of our constitutional democracy. Mr. Trump argued, without any evidence, that the justice system is already politicized because of all the criminal charges brought against him, and his conviction on 34 felony counts. In fact, the Justice Department indicted at least seven Democrats, including President Biden’s son. If the Justice Department were politicized, as Mr. Trump claims, none of these prosecutions would have occurred. In fact, the Justice Department went after these people, including Mr. Trump, because it had evidence of criminal activity sufficient to present in a court of law. Going after political enemies without evidence, only because they are perceived as opponents, would politicize the Department of Justice. Doing so would undermine the rule of law and our constitutional democracy. Mr. Trump nominated Matt Gaetz as Attorney General, despite the fact that Gaetz’s only qualification is his loyalty to Donald Trump. It is Mr. Trump’s intention to politicize and weaponize the Department of Justice, thus undermining the rule of law and our constitutional democracy. (Editor's note: Matt Gaetz withdrew from the process on Thursday). Mr. Trump’s other nominees, Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence and Robert Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services also have no experience and no expertise of those departments. Replacing knowledgeable experts with complete novices and worse, political sycophants, undermines the effectiveness of those agencies and puts the national security in jeopardy as well as the health and welfare of the nation. In fact, this is a recipe for failure. But that was a campaign promise of Mr. Trump, to destroy the deep state. The proposed exemption of the land value tax on ordinary residential properties is a significant move that is expected to have far-reaching implications. Currently, when individuals sell their residential properties in Henan, they are required to pay a land value tax based on the increase in the value of the land since the property was acquired. This tax can often be significant and act as a barrier for many potential buyers and sellers.

Graeme McDowell is still waiting to secure his place on the LIV Golf roster for 2025. His future depends on a decision from his Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka. McDowell spent the 2024 season playing alongside Koepka at Smash, having been recruited into the franchise a year ago to join Talor Gooch and Jason Kokrak. Despite showing promising form throughout the season, the Portrush native ended up in the Open Zone, leaving him as a free agent. It was widely anticipated within LIV's inner circle that Koepka would recall the former US Open champion for the upcoming year. However, sources have confirmed to Mirror Sport that the Smash setup has not yet formally offered McDowell a way back in. READ NEXT: Magilton offers thoughts on Rooney arrival as Larne embark on new era READ NEXT: Conor Bradley labelled 'best player in the world' after stunning display against Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid McDowell has until the first event of the LIV season on February 6 to secure his future. But there's no doubt both Smash and McDowell will want things settled well before that date. McDowell and Koepka seemed to have built a strong bond during their time playing together, reports the Irish Mirror . The duo teamed up to create the Smash Racing syndicate, which has seen them become owners of Cheltenham Festival hopeful Givemefive. McDowell is also a friend of his captain's caddie Ricky Elliott, with both hailing from the Portrush area in Northern Ireland. Koepka has previously thrown a lifeline to McDowell, having signed his teammate last November after his initial two-year LIV contract expired. The 45 year old confirmed to National Club Golfer that this deal ended at the close of the 2024 season, once again leaving his playing future uncertain. For all the latest on news, politics, sports, and showbiz from the USA, visit The Mirror US. After departing Cleeks GC, where he spent his first two seasons on the breakaway circuit, McDowell joined the Smash franchise. If he fails to secure an agreement with his current team for 2025, a return to the Cleeks could provide him a path back onto the LIV roster. Martin Kaymer's team are scouting for a new player following the relegation of Kalle Samooja in September. Other franchises also seeking a new name include Fireballs GC, led by McDowell's former Ryder Cup teammate Sergio Garcia, as well as Jon Rahm's Legion XIII. Of course, if he can't find his way back onto the Smash roster, or any of the other 12 teams, McDowell would be left without a LIV spot. Last week, it was revealed that nine LIV members had taken DP World Tour membership for 2025, with both Garcia and Rahm included. However, McDowell's name was conspicuously absent, suggesting he may be banking on DP World Tour starts if no agreement with LIV is reached following his PGA Tour ban. The DP World Tour has since confirmed to Mirror Sport that McDowell did not make contact about a return before the recent application deadline. The research, published December 12 in Environmental Science & Technology Letters reveals that influenza or flu virus can remain infectious in refrigerated raw milk for up to five days. The findings come at a time when outbreaks of bird flu in dairy cattle have raised concerns about the potential for a new pandemic. "This work highlights the potential risk of avian influenza transmission through consumption of raw milk and the importance of milk pasteurization," said study senior author Alexandria Boehm, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Professor of Environmental Studies in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and the Stanford School of Engineering. More than 14 million Americans consume raw milk annually . Unlike pasteurized milk, raw milk is not heated to kill potentially harmful pathogens. Proponents of raw milk claim that it leaves more beneficial nutrients, enzymes, and probiotics than in pasteurized milk, and can boost immune and gastrointestinal health. The Food and Drug Administration has tied raw milk to over 200 outbreaks of illnesses, and—together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention —warns that germs, such E. coli and Salmonella, in raw milk present "serious" health risks, especially for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. The science behind the risk The researchers explored the persistence of a strain of human influenza virus in raw cow's milk at typical refrigeration temperatures. The flu virus , called H1N1 PR8, survived and remained infectious in the milk for up to five days. "The persistence of infectious influenza virus in raw milk for days raises concerns about potential transmission pathways," said study co-lead author Mengyang Zhang, a postdoctoral scholar in civil and environmental engineering. "The virus could contaminate surfaces and other environmental materials within dairy facilities, posing risks to animals and humans." Additionally, the researchers found that flu virus RNA—molecules that carry genetic information but are not considered a health risk—remained detectable in the raw milk for at least 57 days. By comparison, pasteurization completely destroyed infectious influenza in the milk and reduced the amount of viral RNA by almost 90%, but didn't eliminate the RNA entirely. Although exposure to influenza virus RNA does not pose a health risk, RNA-based testing methods are often used to conduct environmental surveillance of pathogens like influenza. "The prolonged persistence of viral RNA in both raw and pasteurized milk has implications for food safety assessments and environmental surveillance, particularly because many of the techniques used in environmental surveillance detect RNA," said study co-lead author Alessandro Zulli, a postdoctoral scholar in civil and environmental engineering . The research grew out of an earlier project focused on human norovirus and the subfamily of viruses responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. Why it matters now In the U.S. alone, flu viruses infect more than 40 million people and kill more than 50,000 every year. These types of viruses can spread from animals to humans, as in the case of swine flu, which led to as many as 1.4 billion human infections globally in 2009-2010. Although bird flu has not proven as dangerous to people yet, it could mutate to become so. Recent detection of bird flu in cattle has raised questions about its potential transmission through milk and other dairy products. The study's findings underscore the importance of improving monitoring systems, particularly as bird flu continues to spread among livestock, according to the study's authors. The study complements earlier research involving several of the same researchers that pioneered the use of wastewater for detection of avian influenza. That analysis revealed commercial and industrial dairy waste as primary sources. By analyzing wastewater, public health officials could detect virus activity in nearby cattle populations. "We never thought that wastewater could be used to detect and respond to zoonotic pathogens circulating in the community," Boehm said. "It has been amazing to watch our work on detection in wastewater scaled across the United States and the world." On Christmas, December 2023, Anna Jaques Hospital (AJH) in Massachusetts was grappling with a cyberattack that knocked out their EHR system and resulted in them having to divert ambulances to other area hospitals. On January 23, they posted a preliminary website notice ( archived ) about the attack. That notice was posted four days after threat actors known as Money Message had added AJH to their dark web leak site with a claim of having exfiltrated 600 GB of data. Money Message provided numerous screenshots of files with personal and protected health information, and on January 22, they gave the hospital a deadline of January 26 to pay. On January 26, the threat actors updated their listing by simply posting a new link to an onion URL for the data dump. Following AJH’s January 23 notice, there were no updates from AJH until now. On December 5, AJH notified the Maine Attorney General’s Office that a total of 316,342 people were affected by the breach. Their notice included a copy of their notification to patients. AJH also posted an updated notice on their website. The updated website notice repeats earlier information, including that the type of information impacted may vary per individual but could include demographic information, medical information, health insurance information, Social Security number, driver’s license number, financial information, and other personal or health information that the patient had provided Anna Jacques. A closer reading of the notification to patients raises a number of questions about the hospital’s transparency, however. The letter states: As part of the investigation, we engaged leading third-party cybersecurity experts experienced in handling these types of incidents. The investigation aimed to determine the extent of the activity, and whether individual personal information, if any, may have been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized third party. On November 5, 2024, the investigation determined certain files containing your information were potentially accessed by an unauthorized party. “Certain files containing your information were potentially accessed”? Why didn’t they tell patients that their files were not only actually accessed but were actually exfiltrated and leaked publicly? Why did they suggest that they were notifying patients out of an abundance of caution when notification was required by law and data with PHI had been leaked publicly? DataBreaches emailed Beth Israel Leahy Health’s media contact to ask a number of questions, including why AJH had not told patients that data had been leaked on the dark web. They did not reply. DataBreaches is not accusing AJH of violating any law or regulation. HIPAA does not seem to require full transparency about incidents that would include telling patients when their information was definitely acquired or leaked on the internet. It’s high time federal and state breach notification laws did require fuller transparency so that patients can more accurate gauge their risk.Syrian govt forces withdraw as rebels advance towards Damascus

By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS NEW YORK (AP) — A ransomware attack that hit a major software provider last week caused disruptions for a handful of companies over recent days, from Starbucks to U.K. grocery giant Morrisons. Blue Yonder, which provides supply chain technology to a range of brands worldwide, said that it experienced disruptions to services it manages for customers on Thursday, which the third-party software supplier determined to be “the result of a ransomware incident.” Some systems went offline, impacting clients using Blue Yonder’s software. A spokesperson for Starbucks, for example, said that the chain’s ability to manage barista schedules and track hours was disrupted — meaning store leaders across North America are currently being instructed to use manual workarounds. Starbucks maintained that the outage is not impacting how customers are served and that ensuring workers get paid for all hours worked is a top priority. While the company continues to work towards full recovery, the spokesperson added that Starbucks was able to process payroll again as of Tuesday morning. Two of the U.K.’s biggest grocers, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, were also affected — with both telling CNN over the weekend that they had turned to contingency plans to keep operations flowing. A spokesperson for Morrisons confirmed to The Associated Press that the outage “impacted our warehouse management systems for fresh and produce” and that it was continuing to operate on back up systems Tuesday. Sainsbury’s, meanwhile, said Tuesday that its service was restored. NEW YORK (AP) — Daniel Penny chose not to testify and defense lawyers rested their case Friday at his trial in the death of an agitated man he choked on a subway train. Closing arguments are expected after Thanksgiving in the closely watched manslaughter case about the death of Jordan Neely , 30. The encounter between Penny, a white Marine veteran, and Neely, a homeless Black man with mental health and drug problems, has been drawn into U.S. political divides over race, public safety and cities’ ability to handle mental illness and social ills. Penny, 26, has pleaded not guilty. Many criminal defendants don't take the stand, and juries are routinely instructed that they cannot hold defendants' silence — a constitutional right — against them. One of Penny’s lawyers, Daniel Kenniff, noted after court that jurors did hear from Penny, in the form of his recorded statements to police minutes and hours after he put Neely in a chokehold. “Virtually everything he said then is consistent with credible testimony of his fellow passengers," Kenniff said. Penny told police that he wrapped his arm around Neely's neck, took him to the floor and “put him out” because he was angrily throwing things and making threatening comments. Penny said on police video that he hadn't wanted to injure Neely but rather to keep him from hurting anyone else. A number of other passengers testified that they were scared of Neely and relieved that Penny grabbed hold of him. A man who later stepped in and held down Neely's arms, however, told jurors that he urged Penny to let go but that the veteran kept choking Neely for a time. Prosecutors say Penny meant to protect people but recklessly used too much force, overlooking Neely's humanity and making no effort to spare his life. City medical examiners ruled that the chokehold killed Neely. A pathologist hired by Penny's defense disputed that finding . Prosecutors, defense lawyers and the judge are set to meet Monday to hash out jury instructions.AES Announces 2% Increase in Quarterly Dividend

EXCLUSIVE Rachel Reeves: We can't boost the UK's defence spending without making cuts elsewhere By JASON GROVES Published: 22:01 GMT, 6 December 2024 | Updated: 22:06 GMT, 6 December 2024 e-mail 63 View comments Raising defence spending will mean squeezing other parts of government, Rachel Reeves has warned. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail yesterday, the Chancellor also revealed she will launch the biggest audit of government spending in almost two decades in a drive to slash waste and drive up efficiency. The review, which will not be completed until June, will involve a ‘line-by-line’ examination of every item of Whitehall spending, with whole projects set to be axed to focus cash on Labour ’s priorities. It will also set out a timetable for achieving the party’s ambition of raising defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP, which could cost an extra £20 billion a year by 2030. But Ms Reeves warned that any extra cash for the military would have to come out of the same ‘spending envelope’ as other priorities, such as schools, hospitals and the police. She declined to say whether the defence target, which is viewed by military experts as the bare minimum required to keep Britain safe, would even be hit by the end of this decade. The Chancellor did, however, tell the Ministry of Defence it had to ‘get a proper grip’ of its existing budget – and acknowledged that its record on major procurement projects was ‘a disaster zone’. Asked whether defence spending would get special treatment because of the fragile global situation, she said: ‘There is not some magic pot for any area of government spending – it has to come out of this (spending) envelope. Rachel Reeves has said that any increase in defence spending would have to come out of the same 'spending envelope' as other priorities The Chancellor presenting her tax rising Budget in October, which also outlined £70 billion in extra public spending ‘We’re doing the defence review at the moment, being led by George Robertson, former head of Nato, and that will be reporting next year. And then we’ll set out the trajectory for defence spending alongside that.’ Ms Reeves declined to say whether the 2.5 per cent target will be hit by 2030, adding: ‘It’s not just about money. It’s also about making sure we’re getting value from what’s spent and those projects are properly delivered.’ The Mail’s Don’t Leave Britain Defenceless campaign has called for significant increases in Armed Forces investment, to meet the growing threat. The Chancellor defended her record on the military, saying she raised defence spending by £3 billion in the Budget and found an extra £2.3 billion for Ukraine by using profits from frozen Russian assets. Read More Keir Starmer says there COULD be more tax rises to come after Budget mega-raid But she warned that other areas of government would have to be squeezed to fund the commitment, saying: ‘If you spend money on one thing, you can’t spend it elsewhere. There’s not a magic money tree.’ Her comments suggest Defence Secretary John Healey faces a major Whitehall battle to hold Labour to its pre-election spending commitment. At the Budget, Ms Reeves set a one-year spending review to cover departmental funding next year. The new review will cover three years, effectively nailing down Labour’s priorities for the rest of the parliament. It will be the first ‘zero-based’ exercise since 2007 – starting from scratch with every expense to be justified. It is a gap Ms Reeves described as ‘shocking’. ‘It’s a good process, because we’ll go through line by line, every spending item of every department, and then we will also use outside people to challenge that and look at that,’ she said. Ms Reeves with Daily Mail political editor Jason Groves. She warned that there is no 'magic money tree', with spending in one department potentially costing another The Chancellor's comments suggest Defence Secretary John Healey faces a major battle to hold Labour to its pre-election spending commitment Ms Reeves signed off an eye-watering £70 billion in extra public spending at the Budget, but much of this is front- loaded for the next two years . Economic think-tanks have warned she will have to raise taxes again in the second half of the parliament to avoid spending cuts. She denied this, saying departments have to learn to ‘live within their means’. Travis Kelce appears to get frustrated with Patrick Mahomes after missed catch in Chiefs vs Panthers READ MORE: Taylor Swift skips second straight Kansas City Chiefs game By ERIC BLUM Published: 21:54, 24 November 2024 | Updated: 22:01, 24 November 2024 e-mail View comments In a rare moment of dissatisfaction for his close friend, Travis Kelce showed obvious frustration with Patrick Mahomes after a missed throw and a catch against the Carolina Panthers . The Kansas City Chiefs were in for a much-tougher battle than expected with the Panthers, who had one of the league's worst records entering the matchup. On a usual route where Kelce stopped about 10 yards downfield, Mahomes throw to his open tight was a little off target, but not an impossible catch. The ball hits Kelce in the hands, but he could not hold onto it to complete the catch. As soon as the ball hits the turf, Kelce turns around and looks at Mahomes in frustration, throwing his arms out about the trajectory of the pass. Kelce continued to be frustrated as he got closer to the huddle, yelling an expletive on camera about the situation. A visit to Nampally can easily transform into a spiritual sojourn, thanks to the prominent personalities who lie in rest there. Visitors often bow their heads in reverence at the shrines of Sufi saints that dot both the busiest and quietest lanes of this historic neighbourhood. Unbeknownst to many, they may also pass by the graves of some of Hyderabad’s renowned Urdu poets. The Deccan Archive Foundation (TDAF) hosted its final map walk of the season on Sunday, offering new and old Hyderabadis a unique exploration of these lanes using century-old maps. Sibghatullah Khan, architect and founder of TDAF, led the participants to six significant sites, showcasing rare dargahs and shrines. The walk commenced with the dargah of Hazrat Shah Khamosh, which houses the tomb of a revered saint from Bidar known for taking a vow of silence for 25 years. The blend of Islamic and Gothic architecture of the tomb with a massive dome is a reflection of the architectural trends in the late nineteenth century. "The saint got his name as 'khamosh' when a fellow brother of his khankah (hospice) in Bidar commanded him "Tum Khamosh Ho Jaao!" to resolve a slight disagreement between them. After that the saint did not speak for 25 years. He only broke his vow when the same fellow who gave the command went down a stepwell and said “I won't come out until you speak to me," said Sibghatullah Khan. The saint's vow of silence resonates with the Sufi principle of giving up worldly desires and bodily pleasures, where he had the inner strength of relinquishing the enjoyment of speech or utterance as well. "Sufi, the word comes from the rugged woolen blanket called 'suf' that the saints would wear on their backs as they could not afford proper clothes. This harsh reality of Sufis is in extreme contrast with the imagery of a dervish wearing fine white garments with a Faiz cap and twirling in divine trance," Sibghatullah Khan explained. The complex is significant for another reason: it houses the graves of two popular Hyderabadi poets. One of them is Makhdoom Mohiuddin, to whom the popular Bollywood songs ‘Chameli Ke Mandve Ke Tale’ and ‘Phir Chhidi Raat Baat Phoolon Ki’ can be attributed. His grave is overgrown with weeds and lacks any special markers to identify it as his. The graves of his wife and children alongside have unmarked graves. The other poet, Amjad, is buried directly opposite in a walled enclosure adorned with flowers. During the 1908 floods, Amjad and his family were swept away by the water. He clung to a tamarind tree, which still stands today at Osmania General Hospital, saving the lives of more than a hundred people who clutched its branches alongside him. In his poetry, he later described the flood as "Qayamat-e-Soghra" (A Minor Doomsday). The treatment of the two poets after their deaths contrasts starkly. Mohiuddin, a Marxist poet known for his critical stance against rulers and his association with leftist political parties, rests in a neglected, dilapidated grave. Meanwhile, Amjad's grave is well-maintained and adorned with flowers. The next stop was the dargah Khitte Salaheen, where the graveyard houses graves from three prominent families: Baghdadi Shah, Aydroosi, and Salaheen. Among the notable individuals buried here is Ali Nawaz Jung, the Nizam's Chief Engineer. Another notable figure, whose family is buried here but not himself: General Al Edroos, the Commander-in-Chief of Hyderabad's army during the Indian government's takeover in 1948. The Al-Edroosi family, originally from Hadhramaut, Yemen, served the Nizams as military personnel. The last chief, Syed Ahmed Al Aydroos, authored the book 'Hyderabad of the Seven Loaves', which offers his own account of Hyderabad's final days before integration into India. Although his family is buried here, his grave remains untraceable. The walk concluded at the Dargah Aghapura, where the saint Shah Mohammed Hassan Abul Ulai is buried. His disciple, Agha Muhammad Dawood Abul Ulai, along with four others, rests at his feet. The complex includes a mosque, graveyards, the shrine, and a magnificent 'samakhana', which is illuminated annually on various occasions. The Bohemian and Turkish chandeliers, exquisitely preserved, bring an ethereal beauty to the place when lit.

Israel is carrying out its most intense wave of strikes on Lebanon's capital Beirut and its southern suburbs since the start of the 13-month war with Hezbollah, apparently signaling it aims to pummel the country in the final hours before any ceasefire takes hold. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a speech Tuesday evening saying he would ask his ministers to adopt a United States-brokered ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. Less than an hour later, Israeli jets targeted a building in a bustling commercial area of Beirut and Israel's military issued new evacuation warnings, sending residents fleeing into the streets. Hezbollah also fired rockets into Israel, triggering air raid sirens across the country’s north. The ceasefire deal seeks to push Hezbollah and Israeli troops out of southern Lebanon. More than 3,760 people have been killed by Israeli fire in Lebanon the past 13 months, many of them civilians, according to Lebanese health officials. The bombardment has driven 1.2 million people from their homes. Hezbollah began attacking Israel on Oct. 8, 2023, a day after Hamas’ attack on southern Israel, in support of the Palestinian militant group. That has set off more than a year of fighting escalated into all-out war in September with massive Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon and an Israeli ground invasion of the country’s south. It’s not clear how the ceasefire will affect the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, where more than 44,000 people have been killed and more than 104,000 wounded in the 13-month war between Israel and Hamas, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. ——— Here's the Latest: Trump's pick for key adviser credits the president-elect with helping cement Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Waltz, President-elect Donald Trump’s designate to be national security adviser, credited Trump’s victory with helping bring the parties together toward a ceasefire in Lebanon. “Everyone is coming to the table because of President Trump,” he said in a post on X on Tuesday. “His resounding victory sent a clear message to the rest of the world that chaos won’t be tolerated. I’m glad to see concrete steps towards deescalation in the Middle East.” He added: “But let’s be clear: The Iran Regime is the root cause of the chaos & terror that has been unleashed across the region. We will not tolerate the status quo of their support for terrorism.” Israel airstrikes keep pounding Lebanese capital in the war's biggest wave of attacks BEIRUT — Israeli jets targeted a building in a bustling commercial area of Beirut for the first time since the start of the 13-month war between Hezbollah and Israel. The strike on Hamra is around 400 meters (yards) from the country’s central bank. A separate strike hit the Mar Elias neighborhood in the country’s capital Tuesday. There was no immediate word on casualties from either strike, part of the biggest wave of attacks on the capital since the war started. Residents in central Beirut were seen fleeing after the Israeli army issued evacuation warnings for four targets in the city. Meanwhile, the Israeli army carried out airstrikes on at least 30 targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs Tuesday, including two strikes in the Jnah neighborhood near the Kuwaiti Embassy. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that 13 people were injured in the strikes on the southern suburbs. Hezbollah official says the group hasn't seen a final ceasefire agreement BEIRUT — Hezbollah has said it accepts the ceasefire proposal with Israel, but a senior official with the group said Tuesday that it had not seen the agreement in its final form. “After reviewing the agreement signed by the enemy government, we will see if there is a match between what we stated and what was agreed upon by the Lebanese officials,” Mahmoud Qamati, deputy chair of Hezbollah’s political council, told the Al Jazeera news network. “We want an end to the aggression, of course, but not at the expense of the sovereignty of the state.” of Lebanon, he said. “Any violation of sovereignty is refused.” Among the issues that may remain is an Israeli demand to reserve the right to act should Hezbollah violate its obligations under the emerging deal. The deal seeks to push Hezbollah and Israeli troops out of southern Lebanon. Netanyahu recommends his Cabinet approve a Hezbollah cease-fire proposal JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he would recommend his Cabinet adopt a United States-brokered ceasefire agreement with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, as Israeli warplanes struck across Lebanon, killing at least 23 people. The Israeli military also issued a flurry of evacuation warnings — a sign it was aiming to inflict punishment on Hezbollah down to the final moments before any ceasefire takes hold. For the first time in the conflict, Israeli ground troops reached parts of Lebanon’s Litani River, a focal point of the emerging deal. In a televised statement, Netanyahu said he would present the ceasefire to Cabinet ministers later on Tuesday, setting the stage for an end to nearly 14 months of fighting. Netanyahu said the vote was expected later Tuesday. It was not immediately clear when the ceasefire would go into effect, and the exact terms of the deal were not released. The deal does not affect Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, which shows no signs of ending. Israeli strikes in Lebanon’s south and east kill at least 13 people BEIRUT — Lebanon’s state media said Israeli strikes on Tuesday killed at least 10 people in Baalbek province the country’s east. At least three people were killed in the southern city of Tyre when Israel bombed a Palestinian refugee camp, said Mohammed Bikai, a representative of the Fatah group in the area. He said several more people were missing and at least three children were among the wounded. He said the sites struck inside the camp were “completely civilian places” and included a kitchen that was being used to cook food for displaced people. Israelis protest for a Gaza hostage release deal JERUSALEM — Dozens of Israeli protesters took to a major highway in Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening to call for the return of the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, as the country awaited news of a potential ceasefire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. Protesters chanted “We are all hostages,” and “Deal now!” waving signs with faces of some of the roughly 100 hostages believed to be still held in Gaza, at least a third of whom are thought to be dead. Most of the other hostages Hamas captured in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack were released during a ceasefire last year. The prospect of a ceasefire deal in Lebanon has raised desperation among the relatives of captives still held in Gaza, who once hoped that the release of hostages from Gaza would be included. Instead of a comprehensive deal, the ceasefire on the table is instead narrowly confined to Lebanon. Dozens of Israelis were also demonstrating against the expected cease-fire, gathering outside Israel’s military headquarters in central Tel Aviv. One of the protesters, Yair Ansbacher, says the deal is merely a return to the failed 2006 U.N. resolution that was meant to uproot Hezbollah from the area. “Of course that didn’t happen,” he says. “This agreement is not worth the paper it is written on.” G7 leaders endorse Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire and insist Israel follow international law FIUGGI, Italy — Foreign ministers from the world’s industrialized countries said Tuesday they strongly supported an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah and insisted that Israel comply with international law in its ongoing military operations in the region. At the end of their two-day summit, the ministers didn’t refer directly to the International Criminal Court and its recent arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister over crimes against humanity . Italy had put the ICC warrants on the official meeting agenda, even though the G7 was split on the issue. The U.S., Israel’s closest ally, isn’t a signatory to the court and has called the warrants “outrageous.” However, the EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell said all the other G7 countries were signatories and therefore obliged to respect the warrants. In the end, the final statement adopted by the ministers said Israel, in exercising its right to defend itself, “must fully comply with its obligations under international law in all circumstances, including international humanitarian law.” And it said all G7 members — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States – “reiterate our commitment to international humanitarian law and will comply with our respective obligations.” It stressed that “there can be no equivalence between the terrorist group Hamas and the State of Israel.” The ICC warrants say there's reason to believe Netanyahu used “starvation as a method of warfare” by restricting humanitarian aid and intentionally targeted civilians in Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza — charges Israeli officials deny. Israel strikes in central Beirut kill at least 7 people and wound 37 BEIRUT — An Israeli strike on Tuesday levelled a residential building in the central Beirut district of Basta — the second time in recent days warplanes have hit the crowded area near the city’s downtown. At least seven people were killed and 37 wounded in Beirut, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. It was not immediately clear if anyone in particular was targeted, though Israel says its airstrikes target Hezbollah officials and assets. The Israeli military spokesman issued a flurry of evacuation warnings for many areas, including areas in Beirut that have not been targeted throughout the war, like the capital’s commercial Hamra district, where many people displaced by the war have been staying. The warnings, coupled with fear that Israel was ratcheting up attacks in Lebanon during the final hours before a ceasefire is reached, sparked panic and sent residents fleeing in their cars to safer areas. In areas close to Hamra, families including women and children were seen running away toward the Mediterranean Sea’s beaches carrying their belongings. Traffic was completely gridlocked as people tried to get away, honking their car horns as Israeli drones buzzed loudly overhead. The Israeli military also issued warnings for 20 more buildings in Beirut’s suburbs to evacuate before they too were struck — a sign it was aiming to inflict punishment on Hezbollah in the final moments before any ceasefire takes hold. Independent Israeli commission blames Netanyahu and others for October 2023 attack TEL AVIV, Israel — The independent civilian commission of inquiry into the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel has found Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly responsible for the failures leading up to the attack, alongside former defense ministers, the army chief and the heads of the security services. The civil commission presented its findings today after a four-month probe in which it heard some 120 witnesses. It was set up by relatives of victims of the Hamas attack, in response to the absence of any state probe. The commission determined that the Israeli government, its army and security services “failed in their primary mission of protecting the citizens of Israel.” It said Netanyahu was responsible for ignoring “repeated warnings” ahead of Oct. 7, 2023 for what it described as his appeasing approach over the years toward Hamas, and for “undermining all decision-making centers, including the cabinet and the National Security Council, in a way that prevented any serious discussion” on security issues. The commission further determined that the military and defense leaders bear blame for ignoring warnings from within the army, and for reducing the army’s presence along the Gaza border while relying excessively on technological means. On the day of the Hamas attack, the report says, the army’s response was both slow and lacking. The civil commission called for the immediate establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the Oct. 7 attack. Netanyahu has opposed launching a state commission of inquiry, arguing that such an investigation should begin only once the war is over. Israeli ground troops in Lebanon reach the Litani River JERUSALEM -- The Israeli military says its ground troops have reached parts of Lebanon’s Litani River — a focal point of the emerging ceasefire. In a statement Tuesday, the army said it had reached the Wadi Slouqi area in southern Lebanon and clashed with Hezbollah forces. Under a proposed ceasefire, Hezbollah would be required to move its forces north of the Litani, which in some places is some 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the Israeli border. The military says the clashes with Hezbollah took place on the eastern end of the Litani, just a few kilometers (miles) from the border. It is one of the deepest places Israeli forces have reached in a nearly two-month ground operation. The military says soldiers destroyed rocket launchers and missiles and engaged in “close-quarters combat” with Hezbollah forces. The announcement came hours before Israel’s security Cabinet is expected to approve a ceasefire that would end nearly 14 months of fighting. Israeli airstrikes hit buildings near Beirut airport BEIRUT — Israeli jets Tuesday struck at least six buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs Tuesday, including one that slammed near the country’s only airport. Large plumes of smoke could be seen around the airport near the Mediterranean coast, which has continued to function despite its location beside the densely populated suburbs where many of Hezbollah’s operations are based. The strikes come hours before Israel’s cabinet was scheduled to meet to discuss a proposal to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The proposal calls for an initial two-month ceasefire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. There were no immediate reports of casualties from Tuesday’s airstrikes. EU top diplomat calls for urgent aid to Gaza FIUGGI, Italy — EU top diplomat Josep Borrell, whose term ends Dec. 1, said he proposed to the G7 and Arab ministers who joined in talks on Monday that the U.N. Security Council take up a resolution specifically demanding humanitarian assistance reach Palestinians in Gaza, saying deliveries have been completely impeded. “The two-state solution will come later. Everything will come later. But we are talking about weeks or days,” for desperate Palestinians, he said. “Hunger has been used as an arm against people who are completely abandoned.” It was a reference to the main accusation levelled by the International Criminal Court in its arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister. Borrell said the signatories to the court, including six of the seven G7 members, are obliged under international law to respect and implement the court’s decisions. Host Italy put the ICC warrants on the G7 agenda at the last minute, but there was no consensus on the wording of how the G7 would respond given the U.S., Israel’s closest ally, has called the warrants “outrageous.” Italy, too, has said it respects the court but expressed concern that the warrants were politically motivated and ill-advised given Netanyahu is necessary for any deal to end the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. “Like it or not, the International Criminal Court is a court as powerful as any national court,” Borrell said. “And if the Europeans don’t support International Criminal Court then there would not be any hope for justice,” he said. The New York Yankees roster will look very different in 2025. They lost Juan Soto to the New York Mets and have brought in many new pieces. They could also be moving on from one of their All-Star infielders. YES Network's Jack Curry noted that he doesn't expect Gleyber Torres to be back with the team in 2025. Torres is currently a free agent and has been with the Yankees his entire big league career. "There’s been some rumors about Gleyber Torres, I don’t expect Gleyber Torres returning," Curry said during an episode of Yankees Hot Stove. The Yankees have added Paul Goldschmidt to play first base, but that may not be the only infield change. They are involved in the third base market. The addition of a third baseman would move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base. Their search for a third baseman does not bode well for Torres' chances. Torres had a subpar season in 2024. He had 15 home runs. He had just a .257 batting average. However, he can still be valuable for a different team as he still posted an OPS+ over 100. He has 138 career home runs and would be a cheap addition. Torres started his career off with consecutive All-Star selections. Spotrac projects Torres to sign a three-year, $20 million deal in free agency. Torres has played 88 games for the Yankees since his debut in 2018. Now that they are not responsible for paying Soto, the Yankees have money to spend. They've already upgraded their starting rotation, bullpen, infield, and outfield. They could really put a stamp on the offseason by moving Chisholm to second base and replacing Torres. More MLB: $260 million All-Star hints at Yankees trade on social media

Former short-term Mets GM Jared Porter breaks silence on podcast: ‘It was an inappropriate relationship for a lot of reasons’World number one Luke Humphries retained his Players Championship Finals title with an 11-7 victory over teenager Luke Littler in Minehead. Littler, who won the Grand Slam of Darts last week, hit checkouts of 170, 164 and 136 as he threatened to overturn an early deficit, but Humphries held his nerve to win the last three legs. “I’m really, really proud of that one to be honest,” Humphries told Sky Sports. “I didn’t feel myself this week playing-wise, I felt like I was a dart behind in a lot of the scenarios but there’s something that Luke does to you. He really drives me, makes me want to be a better player and I enjoy playing him. “He let me in really early in that first session to go 4-1 up, I never looked back and I’m proud that I didn’t take my foot off the gas. These big games are what I live for. “Luke is a special talent and he was right – I said to him I’ve got to get these (titles) early before he wins them all. “I’d love to be up here and hitting 105 averages like Luke is all the time but he’s a different calibre, he’s probably the best player in the world right now but there’s something about me that never gives up. “This is a great way to go into the worlds.” Littler, who lost the world championship final to Humphries last year, said: “It was tough, missed a few doubles and if you don’t take chances early on, it’s a lot to come back. “I hit the 170 and the 164 but just didn’t have enough in the end. “It’s been a good past two weeks. I just can’t wait to go home, chill out, obviously practice at home for the worlds. That’s it now, leading up to the big one.”

The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) has announced the competition winners for its 37th edition. The awards were unveiled at a ceremony on Thursday in Amsterdam at the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, just a few blocks from the iconic Rijksmuseum. This year’s IDFA selection includes more than 250 documentary titles, many hinging on the current wars and ideological fissures plaguing the world. In a unanimous decision from jurors Juliana Fanjul, Sophie Fiennes, Grace Lee, Asmae El Moudir, and Kazuhiro Soda, Maciej J. Drygas’ Polish archival documentary “Trains” took the IDFA Award for Best Film in the international competition. The film is a rail journey through 20th-century Europe taking place entirely within steam locomotives and railroad cars. “The jury was unanimous. This is a bold and inventive use of archive. The film shows us routes to the positive and negative consequences of modern industrial innovation. It harnesses the magic of cinema and as an audience we are haunted by our present historical time, even while we bear witness to the past,” the jury said in a statement. The win includes a 15,000 euro cash prize. The IDFA Award for Best Directing (worth 5,000 euros) in the international competition went to Auberi Edler for “An American Pastoral,” centered on ideological battles in a small, conservative Pennsylvania town. “By simply looking and listening, this director reveals the current complexity at the heart of the United States. Her deep commitment to observation allows the viewer to come face to face with the communities in the film and provides critical insight into the results of the last U.S presidential election,” said the jury. The IDFA Award for Best Editing also went to Maciej J. Drygas for “Trains,” while the IDFA Award for Best Cinematography went to Zvika Gregory Portnoy and Zuzanna Solakiewicz for the refugee portrait “The Guest,” from Poland and Qatar. In the Envision Competition, which showcases daring international and world premieres, the award for Best Film went to “Chronicles of the Absurd,” a hybrid portrait of Kafkaesque repression within and outside Cuba. “Formally complex with a film language that arises organically and directly from its limitations, this film impressed us with the use of an audio track as a political diary,” the jury said. The Award for Best Directing in the Envision Competition went to Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti for “Bestiaries, Herbaria, Lapidaries” (Italy/Switzerland), while the Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution went in a tie to Omar Mismar for “A Frown Gone Mad” (Lebanon) and to Yo-Hen So for “Park” (Taiwan). The jury members for the Envision Competition were Sam Green, Nduka Mntambo, Kumjana Novakova, B. Ruby Rich, and Wael Shawky. In the DocLab Competition for Immersive Non-Fiction, Lisa Schamlé won the top prize for “Me, a Depiction” hailing from the Netherlands. Another local title, “The Liminal” (also from Lebanon, Palestine, and Norway) from Alaa Al Minawi won a special mention in that section. Pegah Tabassinejad’s “Entropic Fields of Displacement” (Canada) won the IDFA DocLab Award for Digital Storytelling. Emeline Courcier’s “Burn from Absence” (France/Canada) received the DocLab Special Mention for Digital Storytelling. In the short documentary competition, Theo Panagopoulos’ “The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing” (U.K.) won for Best Short Documentary. A special mention also went to “Mama Micra” (Germany) by Rebecca Blöcher. The IDFA Award for Best Youth Documentary (13+) went to Eefje Blankevoort and Lara Aerts for “Everything Will Be Alright” (Netherlands). A special mention here went to “Simply Divine” (France/Romania) by Mélody Boulissière. The IDFA Award for Best Youth Documentary (9-12) went to Poorva Bhat for “What’s the Film About?” (India). Martijn Blekendaal received a special mention here for “The Invisible Ones” (Netherlands/Belgium). More overall awards were given, including The IDFA Award for Best First Feature for “CycleMahesh” (India) by Suhel Banerjee. The IDFA Award for Best Dutch Film went to Luuk Bouwman for “The Propagandist” (Netherlands). The Beeld & Geluid IDFA ReFrame Award went to Farahnaz Sharifi for “My Stolen Planet” (Iran/Germany), a moving essay film about the filmmaker’s experience emigrating to Germany at the peak of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in her home country, which she watched from afar on social media. Radu Jude and Christian Ferencz-Flatz received the Beeld & Geluid IDFA ReFrame Award special mention for “Eight Postcards from Utopia” (Romania), a collage of Romanian commercials made after the country converted to capitalism after Nicolae Ceaușescu’s death. inally, the FIPRESCI Award went to “Writing Hawa” (France/Netherlands/Qatar/Afghanistan) by Najiba Noori. IDFA opened on Thursday, November 14 and runs through Sunday, November 24. Festival director Orwa Nyrabia, who has been at IDFA since 2018, previously announced that he will step down after this year’s edition.

After a thrilling double-overtime win over Fresno State, California Baptist makes the nearly 2,500-mile trip to Orlando to face Central Florida on Sunday. The Lancers (5-3) capped their time at the Acrisure Holiday Invitational in Palm Springs, Calif., with an 86-81 victory over the Bulldogs on Wednesday. That followed a last-second, 79-77 loss to SMU the day before. Dominique Daniels Jr. played 45 minutes against Fresno State and led California Baptist with 29 points. He paces the Lancers with 20.3 points per game, while Kendal Coleman averages 15.1 points and is shooting 59.7 percent form the floor. However, coach Rick Croy's team has struggled from 3-point range, shooting just 30.7 percent entering its first true road game this season. UCF (5-2) is coming off of an 84-76 win over Milwaukee last Wednesday despite being outrebounded 41-31. The Knights were helped by the heroics of senior guard Darius Johnson, who had 28 points as he shot a career-best 8-for-10 from beyond the arc. "Darius was terrific," UCF coach Johnny Dawkins said. "He's so comfortable in his leadership role now, he's leading our team and running the show, and our new players are becoming more comfortable playing with him. He's been a rock for us this season, and you love to see it out of a senior point guard." "I had an extraordinary night shooting the ball from three," Johnson said. "I rarely think that would happen again, but it's great. I know my teammates are going to have nights like that as well." Johnson is among the nation's leaders in minutes per game (36.6) and is shooting a team-high 50 percent from 3-point range (23 of 46). He, along with his fellow guard Jordan Ivy-Curry, are each averaging 16.9 points to lead UCF. The Knights opened the season with an impressive win over Texas A&M, now No. 20 in the AP poll, but lost both games at last weekend's Greenbrier Tip-Off, including a triple-overtime defeat against LSU on Sunday. UCF has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2018-19. This will be the first meeting between the Knights and the Lancers, who will each have time off afterwards. UCF won't play until Dec. 8 against Tarleton State, while California Baptist is idle until its Dec. 11 game at San Diego State. --Field Level MediaGet to know Fernando Lovo, New Mexico's new athletic director

NASHVILLE, Tenn (AP) — Josh Heupel made clear his No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers couldn't have started their regular season finale any worse giving up 14 points within the first five minutes. The Vols showed they can finish, which has them on the verge of hosting a College Football Playoff game. Nico Iamaleava threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns rallying Tennessee to routing in-state rival Vanderbilt 36-23 Saturday. “Finishing the way that we needed to and that we wanted to always is sweet, and these guys earned the right for this to be a big game," Heupel said. "They went out, they took it.” The Volunteers (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference; No. 8 CFP) needed a big victory to impress the College Football Playoff committee. They beat Vanderbilt (6-6, 3-5) for a sixth straight season leaving the Commodores needing to win their bowl game to post their first winning record since 2013. Better yet, the Vols rebounded from a nightmare start giving up the first 14 points by scoring 29 straight points. They led 24-17 at halftime on Iamaleava's first three TD passes. “Once they took the momentum, we kind of allowed them to have it for the rest of the game," Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea said. "And you got to credit Tennessee. I mean, obviously, they were playing for the playoffs and credit coach Heupel and his team for their winning performance.” Junior Sherrill returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown for Vanderbilt to stun a mostly orange crowd. Dylan Sampson fumbled on the Vols’ second play from scrimmage, and Sedrick Alexanader's 4-yard TD run on a 26-yard drive put Vandy up 14-0 quickly. Then Iamaleava got Tennessee going with a 28-yard TD pass to Dont’e Thornton Jr. Tennessee got a break when Max Gilbert's 50-yard field goal bounced off the crossbar and over. Iamaleava found Thornton again on an 86-yard catch-and-run TD, then he tossed an 18-yard TD pass to Miles Kitselman. “Nico I just thought played really well throughout the course of the football game ...,” Heupel said. An early interception remained on Iamaleava's mind postgame. He also scrambled six times for 42 yards and wasn't sacked once. “I still feel like I can do better,” Iamaleava said. Iamaleava capped the opening drive of the third quartewith a 14-yard TD pass to Mike Matthews. The Vols added a safety by Tyre West and another Gilbert field goal. Diego Pavia threw a 31-yard TD pass to Richie Hoskins late with Vandy's 2-point conversion failing for the final margin. Tennessee shook off yet another slow start. The Vols may move up a spot or two . The biggest question is whether the Vols get to host a playoff game at Neyland Stadium where they went undefeated. Tennessee put together TD drives of 91 and 96 yards in the first half. The Vols then beat Vandy at its own game of keepaway after not even managing 10 minutes of possession in the first half. They finished with the edge in that stat outgaining Vandy 538-212. Vanderbilt had some of the best offensive success against Tennessee in the first half of any opponent this season. The Commodores had 114 yards rushing and 17 points by halftime against a defense that came in ranked sixth nationally allowing just 98.8 yards a game. The Vols also held 10 opponents under 20 points this season. Lea said the Commodores ran just 11 plays to Tennessee's 44 after halftime. The Tennessee running back, who set the program record with 22 rushing TDs this season, didn't reach the end zone for the first time this season. Sampson finished with 178 yards rushing to reach 1,485 yards for the season, topping the school mark of 1,464 set by Travis Stephens in 2001. “I don’t know if anybody’s played the position better than he has this year,” Heupel said of a running back who wasn't among the Doak Walker finalists. “He’s special. He's dynamic.” Tennessee waits to hear its spot in the CFP field, while Vanderbilt learns its bowl destination Dec. 8. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Blake's career receiving day helps Charlotte beat FAU 39-27By REBECCA SANTANA, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The picture of who will be in charge of executing President-elect Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration and border policies has come into sharper focus after he announced his picks to head Customs and Border Protection and also the agency tasked with deporting immigrants in the country illegally. Trump said late Thursday he was tapping Rodney Scott, a former Border Patrol chief who’s been a vocal supporter of tougher enforcement measures, for CBP commissioner. As acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Trump said he’d nominate Caleb Vitello, a career ICE official with more than 23 years in the agency who most recently has been the assistant director for firearms and tactical programs. They will work with an immigration leadership team that includes South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security ; former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement head Tom Homan as border czar ; and immigration hard-liner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff. Customs and Border Protection, with its roughly 60,000 employees, falls under the Department of Homeland Security. It includes the Border Patrol, which Scott led during Trump’s first term, and is essentially responsible for protecting the country’s borders while facilitating trade and travel. Scott comes to the job firmly from the Border Patrol side of the house. He became an agent in 1992 and spent much of his career in San Diego. When he joined the agency, San Diego was by far the busiest corridor for illegal crossings. Traffic plummeted after the government dramatically increased enforcement there, but critics note the effort pushed people to remote parts of California and Arizona. San Diego was also where wall construction began in the 1990s, which shaped Scott’s belief that barriers work. He was named San Diego sector chief in 2017. When he was appointed head of the border agency in January 2020, he enthusiastically embraced Trump’s policies. “He’s well known. He does know these issues and obviously is trusted by the administration,” said Gil Kerlikowske, the CBP commissioner under the Obama administration. Kerlikowske took issue with some of Scott’s past actions, including his refusal to fall in line with a Biden administration directive to stop using terms like “illegal alien” in favor of descriptions like “migrant,” and his decision as San Diego sector chief to fire tear gas into Mexico to disperse protesters. “You don’t launch projectiles into a foreign country,” Kerlikowske said. At the time Scott defended the agents’ decisions , saying they were being assaulted by “a hail of rocks.” While much of the focus of Trump’s administration may be on illegal immigration and security along the U.S.-Mexico border, Kerlikowske also stressed the importance of other parts of Customs and Border Protection’s mission. The agency is responsible for securing trade and international travel at airports, ports and land crossings around the country. Whoever runs the agency has to make sure that billions of dollars worth of trade and millions of passengers move swiftly and safely into and out of the country. And if Trump makes good on promises to ratchet up tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada, CBP will play an integral role in enforcing them. “There’s a huge amount of other responsibility on trade, on tourism, on cyber that take a significant amount of time and have a huge impact on the economy if it’s not done right,” Kerlikowske said. After being forced out under the Biden administration, Scott has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s hard-line immigration agenda. He has appeared frequently on Fox News and testified in Congress. He’s also a senior fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. In a 2023 interview with The Associated Press, he advocated for a return to Trump-era immigration policies and more pressure on Mexico to enforce immigration on its side of the border.Slate Market 2024 Size, Share, Growth Report 2032 12-06-2024 07:27 PM CET | Advertising, Media Consulting, Marketing Research Press release from: Prudent Markets Slate Market Slate Market Size & Growth 2024 Latest Updated Report 2024, The Global Slate Market to Growing A CAGR of % during forecast period of 2024-2031. NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Down by two shots with two holes to play, Jeeno Thitikul knew exactly what was needed to capture the biggest prize in women’s golf history. And another eagle-birdie finish — for the second straight day — made it happen. Thitikul claimed the record-setting $4 million first-place check by winning the CME Group Tour Championship on Sunday. It’s the biggest money prize in women’s golf history, bigger than even the winner’s shares in three of the four men’s major championships this year. “Today, standing here with the trophy, it’s more than I can ask for,” Thitikul said. Thitikul shot a 7-under 65 on Sunday and finished the week at 22 under, one shot ahead of Angel Yin (66). Yin had a two-shot lead walking to the 17th tee, only to wind up settling for the $1 million runner-up check. Yin — who missed the start of the season after breaking her leg over the winter — hardly sounded defeated after finishing second and more than doubling her 2024 earnings in four days. “I’m pretty awesome. ... I’ve learned that I just need to believe my myself and that’s what I did,” Yin said. Brooke Henderson (66) of Smiths Falls, Ont., tied for eighth at 13-under overall. The win and the massive check came down to the 18th hole, Thitikul and Yin tied at 21 under after a back-and-forth day atop the leaderboard — both knowing a mistake would likely come at a $3 million cost. Both hit the fairway on 18. Thitikul’s approach was nearly perfect, stopping about 5 feet from the cup. Yin’s response stopped maybe 15 feet away, giving Thitikul the edge as they walked up the fairway. She was smiling broadly as she approached the green, almost as if she knew what was about to happen. Yin’s birdie putt just missed. Thitikul’s was dead center. And history was hers. Her plans for all that cash? “Definitely spend it,” Thitikul said. “That’s an honest answer, for sure. Definitely going to spend it for a little while.” She already had clinched a $1 million bonus this week through the Aon Risk-Reward Challenge, a competition based on how players score on a designated hole each week. In the end, it wound up as a whopping $5 million week for the 21-year-old from Thailand — and going 8 under on the Nos. 17 and 18 over the four days at Tiburon Golf Club made the difference. “All the hard work paid off,” said Thitikul, whose eagle-birdie close to Saturday’s round pulled her into a tie for the lead with Yin going into Sunday at 15 under. It didn’t take long on Sunday for Thitikul to jump in front, with birdies on two of the first three holes to grab a two-shot edge. Her lead vanished with a two-shot swing on the par-4 fourth; Yin made birdie, Thitikul bogey. It seemed like Yin grabbed control on the par-3 16th. Her birdie putt from across the green — about 25 feet — rolled in for a two-shot lead with two holes to play. But her second shot at the par-5 17th missed the green right, and the door was opened for Thitikul. The eagle-birdie finish Saturday gave her hope. The eagle-birdie finish Sunday gave her so much more — even though, it turns out, the second shot on the par 5 wasn’t one that she caught flush. It worked out anyway. “Just lucky enough,” Thitikul said. Olympic gold medalist Lydia Ko (63) finished third at 17 under, her nine birdies coming in a 13-hole span. “I’m excited to be able to work hard this offseason and have another great 2025,” Ko said. Ruoning Yin (68) was alone in fourth at 16 under, and LPGA player of the year Nelly Korda (66) finished at 15 under along with Narin An (68). Ayaka Furue finished at 13 under, good enough to give her the Vare Trophy as the LPGA’s season-long scoring champion over Haeran Ryu. “I feel very happy to have this trophy in my hands,” said Furue, the first Japanese player to win the Vare. Lexi Thompson — a 15-time winner as a pro who plans to step away from full-time golf — finished at 2 under. It’s not clear how often Thompson plans to play in 2025 and beyond; that said, she returns to Tiburon the week of Dec. 9 for the Grant Thornton Invitational, where she’ll team with Rickie Fowler in the event featuring PGA Tour and LPGA Tour players. “I’m not going anywhere, guys.” Thompson said. “I’ll be back in two weeks.” There were two players who said they were retiring after Sunday’s round: Marina Alex, who shot 66 to finish at 12 under, and Ally Ewing, who closed with a 68 to wrap up the week at 11 under. “I’m happy to have ended on my best,” said Alex, a bottle of sparkling wine in her right hand, a bouquet of flowers in the other. Added Ewing: “I’ve been at peace with my decision. It’s just so nice to be able to share the walk with my family this week.” But in the end, the week belonged to Thitikul. And as the sun was setting over Tiburon on Sunday, she was ready for her offseason to begin with a well-deserved celebration. “Anybody hungry?” she asked. “I am.” With Sunday’s check in her pocket, she can dine anywhere she wants for a while. ___ AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press

The Haryana government on Friday approved the purchase of 650 buses, including 150 air-conditioned buses, for the state roadways fleet at ₹ 300 crore. The approval was granted in a meeting of the high-powered purchase committee (HPPC) meeting chaired by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini. An official spokesperson said approvals for contracts and procurement of goods worth ₹ 1,329 crore were given in the meetings of the HPPC, departmental HPPCC and high-powered works purchase committee (HPWPC). The move by Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin follows threats from President-elect Donald Trump to fire senior officers and officials who oversaw the chaotic pullout from Afghanistan in 2021. It also comes as Trump’s transition team weighs possible court-martial proceedings against current and former officers involved in the withdrawal, as NBC News previously reported. Army Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue was nominated for promotion to become a four-star general and to oversee U.S. Army forces in Europe. His nomination was among more than 900 proposed nominations sent to the Senate but Donahue’s was put on hold by Sen. Mullin, according to the Senate aide. Mullin’s office declined to comment. Donahue was the last American service member to board the final U.S. military plane out of Afghanistan in 2021. A night-vision photograph of Donahue boarding a cargo plane went viral, capturing the symbolism of the end of America’s 20-year-long war. After the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan fell to Taliban militants, Donahue — then commander of the 82nd Airborne Division — was ordered to Kabul to oversee the withdrawal of U.S. forces, American embassy staff and Afghans who fought alongside American troops. Retired Gen. Tony Thomas, former head of Special Operations Command, said in a social media post that the decision was a “disgrace” and that Donahue was being treated as a “political pawn.” Heather Nauert, who worked for the State Department in Trump’s first presidential term, said in a social media post that she is a Trump supporter and likes Sen. Mullin but disagreed with the hold put on Donahue’s promotion. “Unless there are facts I don’t know, holding up military promotions bc of our disgraceful Afghanistan withdrawal is wrong,” she wrote. Donahue is currently commander of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty in North Carolina. His promotion could now be at risk as the current Senate will soon go into recess and the new Republican-controlled Congress will start its work in 2025. This article first appeared on NBCNews.com .
