Georgia Tech knocked off two top-10 teams, and Vanderbilt toppled then-No. 1 Alabama. The two opponents in Friday’s Birmingham Bowl have taken highly ranked teams into multiple overtimes. They also are led by mobile quarterbacks who throw few interceptions. There’s a reason that Vandy coach Clark Lea calls the teams “mirror images” of each other, from playing styles to how their seasons went. “We’ve upset some people, they’ve upset some people,” Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia said. “We’ve had close losses. I think it’s a perfect matchup for Vanderbilt.” The Commodores (6-6) are playing in their first bowl game since 2018 and made national headlines with that upset of the Crimson Tide, then pushing then-No. 7 Missouri to double overtime and falling by a field goal to playoff team Texas. “This is a culmination of a special year for us,” Lea said “And there’s been a lot of effort and sacrifice to get this team to this point. It’s also a great opportunity to launch our team into what’s next.” The Yellow Jackets (7-5) took another playoff team, in-state rival Georgia, to eight overtimes before falling in the regular-season finale. They have wins over then-No. 10 Florida State and then-No. 4 Miami. “When you look at a bowl game, you look at the matchup,” Georgia Tech coach Brent Key said. “I believe they got this one right. This will be a good matchup between two very similar football teams in a lot of ways.” The Commodores are playing in their 10th bowl game and seeking their first postseason win since the 2013 victory over Houston, also in Birmingham. It’s bowl No. 47 for the Yellow Jackets but the first time in a decade they have made the postseason in consecutive years. Pavia appears eligible to return for a fifth season of college football based on a federal judge’s ruling, though the NCAA is appealing. “We’ve just got bigger dreams,” Pavia said. “We want to be playing in January come next season.” Lea said he saw Pavia in the hallway after they heard the news and “gave him a kiss on the side of his head, which shows you how excited I was.” “I’m happy for him. I’m happy for our sport, too. I think college football is better when guys like Diego play as long as they possibly can play.” Georgia Tech’s Haynes King has told reporters he will “probably” be back next season. Both quarterbacks are running threats. King has run for 578 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also could be 90 passing yards from becoming the third FCS player since 1959 with 10 touchdown passes, 2,000 yards and no more than one interception if he avoids a pick in the meantime. Pavia, the SEC Newcomer of the Year, tops all Power 4 quarterbacks with 716 rushing yards, and his 2,147 career yards on the ground is also tops among active QBs. He has been intercepted only four times. The Yellow Jackets have lost edge rusher Romello Heights (Texas Tech) and leading receiver Eric Singleton Jr. (Auburn) among their transfer portal departures. But Key thinks his team has the depth to overcome those losses in the bowl game. “You see some of these teams that are in dire straits right now as far as their ability to play a game,” he said. “That’s not the case at all.” Both teams have been among the nation’s best at avoiding turnovers. Vanderbilt has lost only seven turnovers, fewest in the FBS. Georgia Tech has only lost eight turnovers and is tied for second. As Israel advances on a Syrian buffer zone, it sees peril and opportunity

Read MoreAfter last week’s chaotic Carabao Cup quarter-final exit at Tottenham was compounded by an Old Trafford humbling at the hands of Bournemouth, things went further awry as they fell to a third straight loss. United captain Bruno Fernandes’s red card for a second booking changed the dynamics of the match shortly after half-time, with Matheus Cunha scoring direct from a corner at a rocking Molineux. Wolves’ star man teed up substitute Hwang Hee-chan to wrap up a 2-0 win deep in stoppage time as Amorim’s 10th match in charge ended in a fifth defeat, leaving them 14th in the Premier League table. “The idea needs time,” United’s head coach said. “I said it before to you guys that this will be a tough moment and we are far from the end of this moment and that’s it. “We have to continue and focus on the next game.” Asked how long he thinks it will take to make his mark, Amorim said: “I have no idea. No idea. Instead of me trying to understand how much time it will take, just day by day. “Improving, trying to see the videos, using every minute of training and try to win some points because it’s really important in this moment.” United are closer in points to the drop zone than the Champions League places heading into their final match of a topsy-turvy 2024 at home to in-form Newcastle. “In this moment, we just have to survive and to win some time to work on the team,” Amorim said. “We already knew it. I start this job and you start with the team, a new idea, without any time to train, with a lot of games, tough games. “We already knew it, so it’s a long journey, like I said in the first day. We have to continue, and we have to fight these bad moments because this is part of football.” Put to Amorim that he cannot think of European qualification right now, he said: “No, no, no, no. “We have to work on a lot of things in our club – inside the pitch, outside the pitch – so let’s focus on each game, each time and use every minute of training and game to improve the team.” As United nurse their wounds, Wolves head to Tottenham on Sunday looking to continue their perfect start to life under Pereira as Gary O’Neil’s successor followed up an impressive 3-0 win at Leicester in style. They are ready to run, to fight, to compete for each ball. “I feel that they have confidence to play and to win the duels to and this is most the most important for me.” Pereira’s name echoed around Molineux after a win in which Cunha was the star man, with the forward’s goal direct from a corner a key moment in the triumph. United also conceded in that manner at Spurs last Thursday, when back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir rather than Andre Onana was between the sticks. Asked if he looked at the video of that, Pereira said: “Of course we analyse every match. “We try to, I think all the staffs, try to understand the movements or the spaces that we can explore, and we try to not allow them to do it against us. This is football. Sometimes happens, other times not.”

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley knew the Eagles season rushing record could be his on Sunday with the type of stellar performance that has become the standard during his first season in Philadelphia. As for the exact moment Barkley hit the milestone, he wasn't sure — until the “MVP!” chants echoed throughout the Linc after a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter . “The records are great, they put a smile on your face,” Barkley said, “but the season is far from over.” Needing 109 yards to break LeSean McCoy's record, Barkley rushed for 124 yards and pushed his season total to 1,623 in a 22-16 victory over Carolina . Barkley needed just 13 games to pass McCoy, who rushed for 1,607 yards in 2013. He also overtook Wilbert Montgomery, who had 1,512 yards in 1978. “I never wrote the goal down to break it,” Barkley said. “You're always aware of it. That's how I train. That's how I operate in the offseason. I want to be great.” Barkley also maintained his pace to break Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. “That would be extremely cool to do,” Barkley said. “If it happens, it happens, and not with the mindset of, I'm scared to go try to do it. Whatever it takes to win football games.” Barkley is averaging 124.8 yards per game. At that pace and with one more game to play than Dickerson, he would become the top single-season rusher in NFL history. He needs 483 yards yards over the final four games to top Dickerson’s 40-year-old record. He averaged 6.2 yards on 20 carries against the Panthers to help the Eagles win their ninth straight game. McCoy, who was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame this season, remains the franchise’s rushing leader with 6,792 yards. Referencing his old uniform number, McCoy congratulated Barkley on social media with “a lot of love, coming from 2-5." “Being a fan of Shady's growing up, and seeing the spectacular things he was able to do with the ball in his hand, to be able to have my name mentioned with him definitely means a lot,” Barkley said. Barkley left the New York Giants in the offseason and signed a three-year deal worth $26 million guaranteed to join the Eagles, who made him the highest-paid running back in franchise history. The 27-year-old has been worth every dollar. Barkley is among the favorites for league MVP, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was the only player with better MVP odds entering Sunday. Barkley has a franchise-record nine 100-yard rushing games in a season. Although he was held out of the end zone Sunday, he began the day leading the league with four rushing touchdowns of 25-plus yards. Barkley, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, topped 1,000 yards three times in his six seasons with the Giants. He finished with 1,312 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022 and rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 scores as a rookie. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, who had been unwilling to spend on elite running backs, pounced on Barkley and the decision was celebrated as a success in Philly from the first game of the season. Barkley rushed for two scores and caught a TD pass in the opener against Green Bay. His three touchdowns were the most by an Eagles player in his debut since Terrell Owens in 2004. Barkley only soared in production and popularity from there, his highlight reel stamped by a reverse leap over the head of a Jacksonville defender last month. He's since vaulted over every running back ahead of him on the Eagles rushing list — and has a chance at NFL history. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL Dan Gelston, The Associated PressVinod Kumar is with The Times of India’s Punjab Bureau at Chandigarh. Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) Stock Price Down 0% – Should You Sell?Get ready to singalong from your sofa: Wicked is set to be released on streaming services next week, signficantly earlier than had been expected. The hit musical starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will be available to buy in the US on Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and other digital platforms from next Tuesday, December 31. It will become available in the UK a few days later on Friday, January 3. The film will be a premium digital release, set to cost $29.99 in the US and £19.99 in the UK. A physical release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD is expected to follow on February 4, 2025. Directed by Jon M. Chu , Wicked tells the heartwarming story of two young witches as they navigate their way through university and learn about true friendship. Later known as the Wicked Witch of The West, Elphaba ( Cynthia Erivo ), is a green-hued extraordinary witch who faces many obstacles because of her differentness, and forms an bond with Glinda ( Ariana Grande ), who is the opposite of Elphaba in most ways – popular, loved and blonde. The film features songs from the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, and stars Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Bowen Yang, and Marissa Bode alongside Erivo, Grande and Bailey. With a run time of just under three hours, the 2024 film is just the first part of the whole story, with the second and final instalment, Wicked: For Good , set to hit cinemas on November 21, 2025. Earlier this week, Oscar-nominated Don’t Look Up director Adam McKay said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Wicked banned in America given the country’s current political trajectory. McKay made the bold claim on X/Twitter on Monday (December 23), calling the film “one of the most radical big studio Hollywood movies ever made.” “I know Part 2 swings back to the center a bit,” he said, “but Part 1 is nakedly about radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, propaganda.” Responding to a surprised commenter who said they hadn’t seen Wicked yet because they thought it looked more like “American fantasy, franchise-wringing and CGI fare,” McKay said: “I think you’ll be shocked. If America keeps going on the track it is I wouldn’t be surprised to see the movie banned in 3-5 years.” He went on to compare Wicked to a handful of 20th-century classics, including The Sound of Music , Citizen Kane , Bridge on the River Kwai and The Searchers , as well as newer fare such as The Hunger Games , which he labeled “incredibly left wing.”

The President delivered a speech during the dinner. Following is the text : ” In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Benevolent” Your Highness, Crown Prince Haakon, Ms. Anne Beathe, Minister of International Development of Norway, Esteemed heads of companies and investment funds, Honorable guests, At the outset, I would like to express my pleasure to visit your friendly country and my appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality shown to me and my accompanying delegation. I would also to like to note the fruitful discussions I had today with His Majesty the King of Norway, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, where there was a convergence of views on the two countries’ keenness to deepen bilateral cooperation politically, economically, and culturally. Ladies and Gentlemen, The Egyptian government has adopted an ambitious plan to improve the investment climate and strengthen the role of the private sector in driving economic development. This is being implemented through providing incentives and facilitations for foreign investors and removing any obstacles they may face. Throughout all my meetings, I emphasized the importance of enhancing economic and investment cooperation between our two countries. I highlighted the great importance the Egyptian government attaches to attracting foreign direct investment to the Egyptian market, which offers numerous opportunities across various vital sectors of mutual interest, such as energy including traditional, new, renewable, and green sources, transport, infrastructure, industry, agriculture, and information and communications technology, in line with the ambitious plans and goals to maximize the benefits from Egypt’s unique and strategic geographic location. From this standpoint, I invite all Norwegian companies and investment funds to augment their presence in the Egyptian market and to build on the existing successes of cooperation between several major Norwegian companies and the Egyptian side. Thank you very much, and I look forward to listening to your views. Again, I thank you all and I wish you all a Merry Christmas.
CHICAGO (AP) — As Donald Trump’s Cabinet begins to take shape, those on both sides of the abortion debate are watching closely for clues about how his picks might affect reproductive rights policy in the president-elect’s second term . Trump’s cabinet picks offer a preview of how his administration could handle abortion after he repeatedly flip-flopped on the issue on the campaign trail. He attempted to distance himself from anti-abortion allies by deferring to states on abortion policy, even while boasting about nominating three Supreme Court justices who helped strike down the constitutional protections for abortion that had stood for half a century. In an NBC News interview that aired Sunday, Trump said he doesn't plan to restrict medication abortion but also seemed to leave the door open, saying “things change.” “Things do change, but I don't think it's going to change at all,” he said. The early lineup of his new administration , including nominations to lead health agencies, the Justice Department and event the Department of Veterans Affairs, has garnered mixed — but generally positive — reactions from anti-abortion groups. Abortion law experts said Trump's decision to include fewer candidates with deep ties to the anti-abortion movement could indicate that abortion will not be a priority for Trump's administration. “It almost seems to suggest that President Trump might be focusing his administration in other directions," said Greer Donley, an associate law professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Karen Stone, vice president of public policy at Planned Parenthood Action Fund , said while many of the nominees have “extensive records against reproductive health care,” some do not. She cautioned against making assumptions based on Trump's initial cabinet selections. Still, many abortion rights groups are wary, in part because many of the nominees hold strong anti-abortion views even if they do not have direct ties to anti-abortion activists. They're concerned that an administration filled with top-level officials who are personally opposed to abortion could take steps to restrict access to the procedure and funding. After Trump’s ambiguity about abortion during his campaign, "there’s still a lot we don’t know about what policy is going to look like," said Mary Ruth Ziegler, a law professor at the University of California, Davis School of Law. That approach may be revealed as the staffs within key departments are announced. Trump announced he would nominate anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Health and Human Services Department, which anti-abortion forces have long targeted as central to curtailing abortion rights nationwide. Yet Kennedy shifted on the issue during his own presidential campaign. In campaign videos, Kennedy said he supports abortion access until viability , which doctors say is sometime after 21 weeks, although there is no defined timeframe. But he also said “every abortion is a tragedy” and argued for a national ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy, a stance he quickly walked back. The head of Health and Human Services oversees Title X funding for a host of family planning services and has sweeping authority over agencies that directly affect abortion access, including the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The role is especially vital amid legal battles over a federal law known as EMTALA, which President Joe Biden’s administration has argued requires emergency abortion access nationwide, and FDA approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. Mini Timmaraju, president of the national abortion rights organization Reproductive Freedom for All, called Kennedy an “unfit, unqualified extremist who cannot be trusted to protect the health, safety and reproductive freedom of American families.” His potential nomination also has caused waves in the anti-abortion movement. Former Vice President Mike Pence , a staunch abortion opponent, urged the Senate to reject Kennedy’s nomination. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the national anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said the group had its own concerns about Kennedy. “There’s no question that we need a pro-life HHS secretary," she said. Fox News correspondent Marty Makary is Trump’s pick to lead the FDA, which plays a critical role in access to medication abortion and contraception. Abortion rights groups have accused him of sharing misinformation about abortion on air. Russell Vought , a staunch anti-abortion conservative, has been nominated for director of the Office of Management and Budget. Vought was a key architect of Project 2025 , a right-wing blueprint for running the federal government. Among other actions to limit reproductive rights, it calls for eliminating access to medication abortion nationwide, cutting Medicaid funding for abortion and restricting access to contraceptive care, especially long-acting reversible contraceptives such as IUD’s. Despite distancing himself from the conservative manifesto on the campaign trail, Trump is stocking his administration with people who played central roles in developing Project 2025. Trump acknowledged that drafters of the report would be part of his incoming administration during the Sunday interview with NBC News, saying “Many of those things I happen to agree with.” “These cabinet appointments all confirm that Project 2025 was in fact the blueprint all along, and the alarm we saw about it was warranted,” said Amy Williams Navarro, director of government relations for Reproductive Freedom for All. Dr. Mehmet Oz , Trump’s choice to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is a former television talk show host who has been accused of hawking dubious medical treatments and products. He voiced contradictory abortion views during his failed Senate run in 2022. Oz has described himself as “strongly pro-life, praised the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade , claimed “life starts at conception” and referred to abortion as “murder.” But he also has echoed Trump’s states-rights approach, arguing the federal government should not be involved in abortion decisions. “I want women, doctors, local political leaders, letting the democracy that’s always allowed our nation to thrive to put the best ideas forward so states can decide for themselves,” he said during a Senate debate two years ago. An array of reproductive rights groups opposed his Senate run. As CMS administrator, Oz would be in a key position to determine Medicaid coverage for family planning services and investigate potential EMTALA violations. As Florida’s attorney general, Pam Bondi defended abortion restrictions, including a 24-hour waiting period. Now she’s Trump’s choice for attorney general . Her nomination is being celebrated by abortion opponents but denounced by abortion rights groups concerned she may revive the Comstock Act , an anti-vice law passed by Congress in 1873 that, among other things, bans mailing of medication or instruments used in abortion. An anti-abortion and anti-vaccine former Florida congressman, David Weldon, has been chosen to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which collects and monitors abortion data across the country. Former Republican congressman Doug Collins is Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs amid a political battle over abortion access and funding for troops and veterans. Collins voted consistently to restrict funding and access to abortion and celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade. “This is a team that the pro-life movement can work with," said Kristin Hawkins, president of the national anti-abortion organization Students for Life. ___ The Associated Press receives support from several private foundations to enhance its explanatory coverage of elections and democracy.
