The Gophers have been working on a couple trick plays during closed practices in recent weeks. Unveiled Saturday, one worked to huge success and one didn’t pan out in a 26-25 loss to No. 4 Penn State. ADVERTISEMENT They busted out a double-reverse pass that resulted in a 21-yard touchdown from Max Brosmer to a wide open Jameson Geers in the first half to take a 17-10 lead at Huntington Bank Stadium. Then in the fourth quarter, the U called a throwback pass from Brosmer to left tackle Aireontae Ersery on second and goal from the 8-yard line. Brosmer intentionally threw it incomplete because Penn State’s All-America candidate, defensive end Abdul Carter, was waiting to make a tackle on the U’s athletic-but-massive lineman. “The reverse pass worked, so it’s a good call,” coach P.J. Fleck said postgame. “We were in the perfect defense for (the throwback pass). We practiced it all week. The only thing that they showed ... was pop (Carter) out. If he doesn’t pop out, there is nobody there. “It just didn’t come together,” Fleck continued. “It came together in practice. I love the call. I loved the look that we put it into. I would call it all over again based on the look that we had.” ADVERTISEMENT Brosmer shared that players were comfortable with the throwback call until Carter spoiled it. “Rather than taking a negative spot (by trying to complete it), we just went onto the next play,” Brosmer said. After the second trick play didn’t work, Brosmer’s third-down pass to Elijah Spencer fell incomplete and the U opted to kick a 26-yard field goal to make it 26-25 with five minutes left. “Kicking the field goal is the smart decision,” Fleck said. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Jaylen Reed’s hands were still dirty and his face smeared with eye black as he took a seat in the Beaver Stadium media room. The hard-nosed veteran of nearly 50 college football games looked weary after Penn State pounded Maryland on Saturday, but lit up as he watched media members gather around teammate Audavion Collins next to him. The sophomore was excitedly describing his first career interception. Reed grinned, his pride was evident. One of Penn State’s captains, Reed loves when underclassmen earn playing time. He knows, especially on defense, the No. 3 Nittany Lions (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten, No. 4 CFP) will likely rely on them to make a run at their first national championship since 1986. “Having that type of depth, having that type of guy that can step up and play the game every week, that’s something that’s going to help us down the stretch,” Reed said. “Having depth at all positions, I feel like that’s the main thing and I feel like we have huge depth.” Reed knows Collins is far from the only reserve player who has been effective for Tom Allen’s defense this season. Heading into Saturday’s Big Ten championship game against No. 1 Oregon in Indianapolis, Penn State has used 39 players on a defense that ranks seventh nationally against the run and pass. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions are fourth overall in total defense (266.8 yards) and sixth in scoring defense (14 points) entering the showdown with the Ducks' 15th-ranked offense with a College Football Playoff first-round bye at stake. It’s not just the starting 11 getting it done. Since mid-October, Penn State has regularly rotated at least nine defensive linemen, six linebackers and nine defensive backs early and midway through games. As a result, seven players have snagged their first interceptions this season, while five others have recorded their first sacks. “We believe in everybody coming in behind us,” linebacker Tony Rojas said. “Our defense, we know what we’re capable of and I feel like our defense is top tier, if not the best.” It technically hasn’t been at full strength since Week 2 of the season. Then, star safety KJ Winston was lost to an unspecified long-term injury. He tried to play at Wisconsin on Oct. 26, but hasn’t seen action since. In the meantime, Winston’s absence has allowed Allen and head coach James Franklin to get a good look at Collins and other young backend players like Eliot Washington, Zion Tracy and Dejuan Lane. Tracy and Lane have seen their snap counts go up since November, and both have interceptions since. The Nittany Lions haven’t been immune to injuries up front, either. Star end Dani Dennis-Sutton was limited midway through the season by an unspecified ailment. Before last weekend’s game against Maryland, Penn State listed defensive tackles Alonzo Ford and Kaleb Artis and defensive end Zuriah Fisher out with injuries. While not near 100% healthy, Dennis-Sutton continued to suit up, but yielded reps to Amin Vanover and Smith Vilbert. Vanover and Vilbert are seniors who were slowed over the years by injuries but have stuck around, and are now shoring up the team’s depth. “I think getting Dani back healthy, that’s been important,” Franklin said. “I think this was his first game back where he was really healthy, Abdul (Carter) the second half of the season, has gotten very comfortable playing defensive end. We’ve been able to rotate and get production out of guys like Amin as well, so I think all those things have been really important.” So is the fact that Penn State’s defense has continued to close out games. The Nittany Lions have allowed just 445 yards on 125 third-quarter plays this season. Meanwhile, they’ve outscored opponents 192-55 in the second half and overtime and held 19 of their last 22 Big Ten opponents to fewer that 100 rushing yards. Like Reed, senior Dvon J-Thomas spent much of the second half against Maryland cheering on his freshman teammates. Notably, tackle Ty Blanding who had his first career tackle for loss in his first defensive series. “I’ve seen a tremendous leap in their attention to detail,” J-Thomas said. “There’s not a lot of moments or times in your career where you’ll have an opportunity like this and I think they realize that." BEIRUT (AP) — Syria’s embassy in Lebanon suspended consular services Saturday, a day after two relatives of deposed Syrian President Bashar Assad were arrested at the Beirut airport with allegedly forged passports. Also on Saturday, Lebanese authorities handed over dozens of Syrians — including former officers in the Syrian army under Assad — to the new Syrian authorities after they were caught illegally entering Lebanon, a war monitor and Lebanese officials said. The embassy announced on its Facebook page that consular work was suspended “until further notice” at the order of the Syrian foreign ministry. The announcement did not give a reason for the suspension. Two Lebanese security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the suspension was ordered because the passports belonging to Assad’s relatives — the wife and daughter of one of his cousins — were believed to have been forged at the embassy. Assad’s uncle, Rifaat Assad — who has been indicted in Switzerland on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity — had flown out the day before on his real passport and was not stopped, the officials said. The U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Saturday that 70 Syrians, including former army officers, were handed over by a Lebanese security delegation to the security forces of the new Syrian government, led by the former insurgent group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS. Three Lebanese judicial officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the report. Regional countries have been quick to establish ties with Syria’s new rulers. Delegations of Libyan and Bahraini officials arrived in Damascus on Saturday on official visits. HTS leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, has largely succeeded in calming fears within and outside of Syria that his group would unleash collective punishment against communities that supported Assad’s rule or attempt to impose strict Islamic law on the country’s religious minorities. However, in recent days, sporadic clashes have broken out between the HTS-led security forces and pro-Assad armed groups. The country’s new security forces have launched a series of raids targeting officials affiliated with Assad and have set up checkpoints in areas with significant populations of the Alawite religious minority to which the former president belongs to search for weapons. There have also been ongoing tensions and clashes in northeastern Syria between Kurdish-led forces and armed groups backed by Turkey. Many Kurds have viewed the new order in Damascus, which appears to have strengthened Turkey’s hand in Syria, with anxiety. Ankara sees the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces — a key U.S. ally in the fight against the Islamic State group — as an affiliate of its sworn enemy, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which it classifies as a terrorist organization. The U.S. State Department said Saturday that Secretary of State Antony Blinken had spoken with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to “discuss the latest developments in Syria.” “Secretary Blinken emphasized the need to support a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process that upholds human rights and prioritizes an inclusive and representative government,” the statement said, adding that they “also discussed the shared goal of preventing terrorism from endangering the security” of Turkey and Syria. On Saturday, hundreds of protesters convened by Kurdish women’s groups participated in a demonstration in the northeastern city of Hasaka to demand women’s rights in the new Syria. Perishan Ramadan, a participant from Hasaka, said the new government “is worse than Bashar” and that its leaders are Islamist extremists who “don’t accept any role for women.” While the country’s new leaders have not attempted to impose Islamic dress or other conventions, it remains to be seen what role women will have in the new order and whether they will hold political or government positions. "Women must be present in the new constitution for Syria,” said Rihan Loqo, spokeswoman for the Kongra Star women’s organization. "... Women’s rights should not be ignored.” Associated Press writers Hogir Abdo in Hasaka, Syria, and Ellen Knickmeyer in Washington contributed to this report.

Another highlight of the broadcast was the encounter with the Illusionary Phantom, a deceptive spirit that can create illusions to confuse and disorient players. Li demonstrated his quick thinking and strategic prowess as he navigated the phantom's illusions and eventually outsmarted the creature to claim victory.

However, as the game progressed, a surprising trend started to emerge – Mbappe was repeatedly caught offside. In fact, the young French forward was flagged offside a total of 8 times throughout the match. It was a puzzling sight for Real Madrid fans and neutrals alike, as Mbappe's offside runs seemed to disrupt the flow of Real Madrid's attacks and squander promising scoring opportunities.

College Football Playoff betting guide: First-round odds, title favoritesLabor's bid to ram through almost 40 pieces of legislation on the last day of parliamentary sittings has been slammed as "hypocritical" and lacking transparency. Login or signup to continue reading The Albanese government has been chipping away at its agenda since Monday, but with only a few more hours to go in the last sitting week of the year, Labor will have to go warp speed to tick off its remaining items. Proposals like the social media ban for children under 16, clean energy incentives known as Future Made in Australia, and migration laws that would give the government powers to deport non-citizens are among the 36 bills that will be brought before the Senate on Thursday. Firebrand senator Jacqui Lambie lashed Labor for its "absolutely shameful" attempt to rush through "undercooked" bills. She said the government had guillotined more legislation in three years - which means forcing votes - than the coalition had in its almost decade in power. "How is it safe for employees in my office, to go through 41 bills in a matter of about 12 hours," she demanded. "Bloody hypocritical. And what about the right to disconnect? "It is dangerous to shove bills down our throats. It is dangerous to shove bills down Australian throats without us probably going through and actually having a good look at it, and putting it under the microscope." One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts referenced French revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre, saying his guillotines would have needed sharpening due to the sheer number being used by Labor. But manager of government business in the senate Katy Gallagher rejected Labor was trying to circumvent scrutiny or accountability. "We just want to deal with them. Yes or no, that is the position that we are bringing," she said. "At the end of the year, it is not abnormal for the Senate to have to deal with a large number of bills." Discussions have continued giving rise to last-minute amendments and other negotiations have reached an impasse. Senator Gallagher has said the government will go to other members of the Senate to get its legislation across the line. That has become more difficult as the Senate suspended independent senator Lidia Thorpe on Wednesday night after she threw pieces of paper at Pauline Hanson over a racism row. This means Senator Thorpe has been barred from the chamber and will be unable to vote on any legislation. Members of the Senate have also raised concerns that the compressed timeline will not allow bills to be properly considered, with Nationals senator Matt Canavan arguing that each piece of legislation would only receive 15 minutes of debate assuming the chamber sat for its usual nine-hour day. "What other workplace gets to knock off in November and not back until February?" he wrote on X. A federal election must be held by May 17, but if the government opts for an earlier contest, politicians may not return to Parliament House before Australians go to the polls. WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has a broken left fibula and is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks.Sunday's inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff bracket reveal officially set the stage for the most anticipated postseason the sport has ever seen. Eight more spots in the playoff field have created two extra rounds to determine a national champion, which could come from the Big Ten, the Southeastern Conference or even the Mountain West! Now that the initial matchups are set, it's time to examine the FanDuel odds for the first-round games and, of course, the latest national championship odds. CFP Bracket: Odds for First-Round Games Oregon's win over Penn State in the Big Ten championship locked the Ducks into the No. 1 seed, while Georgia's overtime triumph over Texas for the SEC crown moved the Bulldogs up to No. 2. Boise State slotted in at No. 9 in the final CFP rankings but is the No. 3 seed thanks to its win over UNLV in the Mountain West championship. With SMU losing to Clemson in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game, No. 12-ranked Arizona State is the four seed after it throttled Iowa State to win the Big 12. The top four teams get a bye, with the 5-12 seeds meeting in the first round. 12-seed Clemson (+330) vs. 5-seed Texas (-11.5) Texas was favored to win the SEC and lock down a top-four seed, but Clemson was not expected to beat SMU for the ACC title. The Longhorns will therefore hunt redemption, while Dabo Swinney's team is essentially playing with house money. The winner will face Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. 9-seed Tennessee (+215) vs. 8-seed Ohio State (-7.5) The third-highest-ranked team from the SEC (No. 7 Tennessee) will face off with the third-highest-ranked squad from the Big Ten (No. 6 Ohio State). This game brings the Buckeyes a chance at redemption for their embarrassing loss to Michigan to end the regular season. The winner will travel to the Rose Bowl to play Oregon. 11-seed SMU (+240) vs. 6-seed Penn State (-7.5) Concerns over strength of schedule dog both teams. Both have 11-2 records and were runners-up in their respective conferences. Penn State's only win over a ranked opponent was against then-No. 19 Illinois in Week 4, while SMU has knocked off then-No. 22 Louisville and then-No. 18 Pittsburgh. The winner will meet Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. 10-seed Indiana (+230) vs. 7-seed Notre Dame (-7.5) The Hoosiers may be the biggest surprise in college football this season, although their inclusion came with a few concerns over the strength of their schedule. After falling flat in a potential statement game against then-No. 2 Ohio State on Nov. 23, Indiana can prove its might against a Fighting Irish squad that won its last 10 games. The winner will take on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. National Championship Odds and Picks Oregon was the betting favorite (odds via FanDuel) prior to the final rankings reveal at +230. Post-reveal, Texas and Georgia are co-favorites at +360, followed by Oregon at +380, Ohio State at +500 and Penn State at +600. Boise State is the biggest long shot at +7500 despite having a first-round bye. Like Boise State, Arizona State saw its odds go from +3500 to +6000 even though it doesn't play until the quarterfinals. The Picks are In... First-Round Best Bet: Indiana-Notre Dame UNDER 51.5-both teams have solid offenses but will find it difficult to move the ball against the other's defense. Upset Special: Clemson (+340) over Texas-Cade Klubnik will have his hands full against the Texas secondary, but the Clemson defense could be up for the challenge against Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns offense. National Championship Winner: Favorite-Oregon +380; Dark Horse-Notre Dame +1200; Long Shot-Arizona State +6000 --Field Level MediaMutual of America Capital Management LLC trimmed its stake in shares of AGCO Co. The United States Postal Service might have found a way to unite a nation bitterly divided after this month's election: It will release a Betty White stamp. The beloved actor known for roles in "The Golden Girls," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Boston Legal" and others will be on a 2025 Forever stamp, USPS announced this past week. White died in late December 2021 , less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. The Postal Service hasn't announced a release date for the stamp. Betty White speaks Sept. 17, 2018, at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “An icon of American television, Betty White (1922–2021) shared her wit and warmth with viewers for seven decades,” the Postal Service said in announcing the stamp, which depicts a smiling White based on a 2010 photograph by celebrity photographer Kwaku Alston . “The comedic actor, who gained younger generations of fans as she entered her 90s, was also revered as a compassionate advocate for animals.” Boston-based artist Dale Stephanos created the digital illustration from Alston's photo. "I'd love to send a letter back to my 18-year-old self with this stamp on it and tell him that everything is going to be OK," Stephanos posted on Facebook . Regardless of personal politics, self-proclaimed supporters of Republican President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris reacted with delight on social media. "Betty White was my hero, all of my life! I actually had a doll when I was a little girl I named Betty White," one Trump supporter posted on X , formerly Twitter. “Something to make this awful week a little better: We’re getting a Betty White stamp,” a pro-Harris X account posted. White combined a wholesome image with a flare for bawdy jokes . Her television career began in the early 1950s and exploded as she aged. “The only SNL host I ever saw get a standing ovation at the after party," Seth Meyers posted on Twitter after her death. "A party at which she ordered a vodka and a hotdog and stayed til the bitter end.” Allen Ludden and his wife Betty White, who love to play games, continue a two year gin rummy battle in which she's ahead by a cumulative 6,000 points in Westchester, N.Y. on April 29, 1965. Ron Roberts Founder & CEO of Roberts Retirement Group, Interviewed on the Influential Entrepreneur Podcast Discussing Longevity Planning for Retirement 11-22-2024 09:56 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance Press release from: Getnews / PR Agency: Authority Press Wire Image: https://authoritypresswire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Ron_old_picture_for_20181__1_-removebg-preview.png Ron Roberts discusses highlights of longevity planning for retirement Listen to the interview on the Business Innovators Radio Network: https://businessinnovatorsradio.com/interview-with-ron-roberts-founder-and-ceo-of-roberts-retirement-group-discussing-longevity-planning-for-retirement/ Ron Roberts, founder and CEO of Roberts Retirement Group, about the essential topic of longevity planning in retirement. With over 35 years of experience in financial services, Ron shares his journey into the industry, sparked by a friend's success in financial planning. The conversation delves into the importance of adapting retirement strategies to account for increasing life expectancies, emphasizing how better health and lifestyle choices contribute to longer lives. Longevity planning has emerged as a crucial aspect of retirement strategy, particularly in response to two significant trends: the decline of traditional pensions and the increasing life expectancy of individuals. As people live longer, the need for guaranteed lifetime income strategies has never been more essential. Historically, a substantial portion of the U.S. workforce relied on employer-provided pensions. When Ron Roberts began his career in financial services in 1990, approximately 76% of workers had access to these guaranteed income sources. Pensions offered retirees a reliable paycheck for life, regardless of how long they lived. However, this landscape has changed dramatically over the years. Many companies have phased out traditional pension plans in favor of 401(k) plans, which do not guarantee lifetime income. Instead, 401(k) plans place the responsibility on individuals to manage their retirement savings, often leading to uncertainty about whether their funds will last throughout their retirement years. This shift has left many retirees concerned about the possibility of outliving their savings. Advancements in healthcare and improvements in lifestyle continue to enhance the quality of life, resulting in longer lifespans. This increase in life expectancy raises important questions about retirement planning. Individuals must now consider not only how to accumulate wealth for retirement but also how to ensure that their savings will sustain them for potentially two to three decades after they stop working. With the reality that many retirees may spend 20 to 30 years in retirement, the risk of running out of money becomes a pressing concern. This is where longevity planning comes into play, focusing on creating strategies that provide guaranteed income for life, regardless of how long an individual may live. To address the challenges posed by the decline of pensions and increased longevity, financial advisors like Ron Roberts emphasize the importance of guaranteed lifetime income strategies. These strategies often involve utilizing products from legal reserve companies, primarily insurance companies that specialize in protecting pensions. By transferring funds from traditional investment accounts into legal reserve accounts, retirees can secure their principal and ensure that their growth is protected. One effective approach is to use indexed products tied to various market indexes, such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. These indexed products can provide growth potential while also offering protection against market downturns. The key is that they allow retirees to benefit from market gains without the risk of losing their principal, thus ensuring a more stable income stream throughout retirement. The King and the Prime Minister have paid tribute to Jimmy Carter following the former US president’s death on Sunday aged 100. In a message to the American people, the King expressed “great sadness” at the news of Mr Carter’s death, describing him as “a committed public servant” who “devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights”. He added: “His dedication and humility served as an inspiration to many, and I remember with great fondness his visit to the United Kingdom in 1977. “My thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the American people at this time.” Mr Carter, a former peanut farmer, served one term in the White House between 1977 and 1981 and spent his post-presidency years as a global humanitarian, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Sir Keir Starmer said Mr Carter had “lived his values in the service of others to the very end” through “decades of selfless public service”. Praising a “lifelong dedication to peace” that saw him win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Sir Keir added: “Motivated by his strong faith and values, President Carter redefined the post-presidency with a remarkable commitment to social justice and human rights at home and abroad.” Tributes to Mr Carter followed the announcement of his death by his family on Sunday, more than a year after he decided to enter hospice care. His son, Chip Carter, said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love.” US President Joe Biden, one of the first elected politicians to endorse Mr Carter’s bid for the presidency in 1976, said the world had “lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian”. He said: “Over six decades, we had the honour of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well. “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us.” Other UK politicians also paid tribute to Mr Carter. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said he was “an inspiration” who “led a truly remarkable life dedicated to public service with a genuine care for people”. Scottish First Minister John Swinney described the former president as “a good, decent, honest man who strove for peace in all that he did”, while Welsh First Minister said he was “a remarkable man” and “a humanitarian and scholar”. Former prime minister Sir Tony Blair said Mr Carter’s “life was a testament to public service”. He added: “I always had the greatest respect for him, his spirit and his dedication. He fundamentally cared and consistently toiled to help those in need.” Mr Carter is expected to receive a state funeral featuring public observances in Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington DC before being buried in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. A moderate democrat born in Plains in October 1924, Mr Carter’s political career took him from the Georgia state senate to the state governorship and, finally, the White House, where he took office as 39th president in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War. His presidency saw economic disruption amid volatile oil prices, along with social tensions at home and challenges abroad including the Iranian revolution that sparked a 444-day hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran. But he also brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which led to a peace treaty between the two countries in 1979. After his defeat in the 1980 presidential election, he worked more than four decades leading The Carter Centre, which he and his late wife Rosalynn co-founded in 1982 to “wage peace, fight disease, and build hope”. Under his leadership, the Carter Center virtually eliminated Guinea Worm disease, which has gone from affecting 3.5 million people in Africa and Asia in 1986 to just 14 in 2023. Mrs Carter, who died last year aged 96, had played a more active role in her husband’s presidency than previous first ladies, with Mr Carter saying she had been “my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished”. Earlier this year, on his 100th birthday, Mr Carter received a private congratulatory message from the King, expressing admiration for his life of public service( MENAFN - EIN Presswire) Fidelity Precious Metals IRA 2025 Review Released: IRAEmpire highlights reviews, complaints, and fees to guide investors. More Details on How Sentiment Analysis Unraveled Fidelity Precious Metals IRA Reviews and Complaints Understanding consumer feedback is critical to building a brand's reputation, improving products or services, and staying competitive. With the growing volume of online reviews and social media chatter, sentiment analysis enables companies to: Decode customer emotions: Understand how customers feel about their offerings. Monitor brand reputation: Stay updated on public perception. Respond proactively: Identify issues before they escalate into bigger problems. How Sentiment Analysis is Applied to Consumer Feedback 1. Evaluating Overall Customer Sentiment Sentiment Analysis provides a high-level overview of how customers perceive a company. For instance, aggregating sentiments from reviews or social media posts gives a snapshot of whether the overall feedback is positive, neutral, or negative. This helps companies gauge customer satisfaction and assess their market position. 2. Uncovering Key Drivers of Sentiment Consumer feedback often touches on various aspects of a business-product quality, customer service, pricing, delivery times, etc. Sentiment analysis tools can categorize feedback into themes or topics and identify the key drivers behind customer sentiments. For example: Positive Sentiments: Praise for fast delivery, excellent product design, or friendly customer support. Negative Sentiments: Complaints about defective products, unresponsive service, or high prices. This granular analysis helps businesses focus on areas that matter most to their customers. 3. Identifying and Resolving Pain Points Sentiment Analysis highlights recurring negative sentiments in customer feedback, allowing companies to identify systemic issues. For example, if many reviews mention "late delivery," businesses can investigate their logistics processes and implement improvements to enhance customer satisfaction. 4. Real-Time Reputation Management In the era of social media, sentiments can proliferate rapidly. Sentiment analysis systems track social media comments and reviews in real time, assisting companies in identifying potential crises or viral trends. For example, if a new product launch elicits adverse feedback, companies can promptly address the situation with clarifications or remedies, so alleviating possible harm to their reputation. 5. Enhancing Customer Experience By analyzing feedback sentiment, companies can refine their customer service strategies. For instance, if customers frequently express frustration over long wait times for support, businesses can invest in more staff or implement AI-driven chatbots to improve response times. 6. Tracking Sentiment Over Time Sentiment analysis allows companies to track changes in consumer sentiment over time. This is particularly useful for evaluating the impact of new initiatives, marketing campaigns, or product launches. For example, a company can measure how customer sentiment shifts after introducing a loyalty program or resolving a major service issue. 7. Benchmarking Against Competitors Comprehending consumer perceptions of competitors yields significant insights into market dynamics. Organizations can employ sentiment analysis to discern strengths and shortcomings in comparison to their competitors, hence aiding in the refinement of their competitive strategy. Tools and Technologies Used in Sentiment Analysis Sentiment analysis is powered by advanced technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and natural language processing (NLP). Tools such as IBM Watson, Google Natural Language API, and platforms like Hootsuite Insights or Brandwatch are commonly used for analyzing consumer feedback. These tools process vast amounts of textual data, offering insights that are otherwise difficult to extract manually. Benefits of Using Sentiment Analysis for Consumer Feedback Actionable Insights: Helps businesses turn feedback into concrete actions for improvement. Enhanced Customer Retention: By addressing negative sentiments, companies can reduce churn. Data-Driven Decision Making: Sentiment analysis supports strategic planning based on real customer perceptions. Improved Marketing Strategies: Insights from sentiment analysis can inform targeted and empathetic marketing campaigns. Challenges in Sentiment Analysis While sentiment analysis offers significant benefits, it is not without challenges: Ambiguity in Language: Sarcasm, irony, and cultural differences can make it difficult to accurately assess sentiment. Context Dependence: Sentiments often depend on the context of the feedback, which may not always be clear. Evolving Trends: Consumer language and slang evolve rapidly, requiring continuous updates to analysis models. Sentiment Analysis is transforming how enterprises comprehend and react to consumer input. Utilizing this potent instrument, organizations may acquire profound insights into consumer preferences, proactively resolve concerns, and improve their overall brand reputation. As technology advances, the capacity to analyze and respond to consumer attitudes will become increasingly refined, facilitating more customer-centric strategies and enduring economic success. In a landscape where customer experience serves as the paramount differentiation, sentiment analysis is vital. jili29 Cloudflare Announces Date of Investor Day 2025Ma:nyo’s senior vice-president Choi Jin-ho lets workers manage their work schedules, as long as they complete the mandatory number of working hours stipulated each month. SEOUL – At K-beauty brand Ma:nyo, employees can take time off from work to look after their children, run errands, or pop out for a yoga class or tennis lesson – during office hours. They are free to manage their work schedules, as long as they complete the mandatory number of working hours stipulated each month, which averages about 171 hours. This works out to roughly 81⁄2 hours a day. “It is about focusing on the work tasks, rather than the work hours, so I think that makes my company more efficient and more effective,” Ma:nyo’s senior vice-president Choi Jin-ho told The Straits Times. The company, known for its best-selling cleansing oil product, was named an exemplary employer for its work-family balance policies by the South Korean government in September. Ma:nyo’s flexible working arrangement bucks the trend in South Korea’s notoriously demanding corporate culture. One in four workers is not able to leave the workplace on time, a poll released in October found, with respondents citing excessive workloads and office culture as the primary reasons. Poor work-life balance has been cited as a key reason for South Korea’s nose-diving fertility rate, which hit a record low of 0.72 birth per person in 2023 , a situation that politicians have called a national emergency. South Korean workers put in an average of 1,872 hours annually in 2023, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), when the average for OECD countries was 1,742 hours. In an economic outlook report released in July, the OECD attributed South Korea’s declining birth rate to several factors, including a challenging social climate that makes it difficult to balance work and family. It emphasised the need to “reduce working hours to improve work-life balance and help turn around the fertility trend”, and suggested expanding parental leave to all workers, as well as expanding public and workplace childcare facilities. The South Korean authorities are now targeting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) like Ma:nyo, which account for 83 per cent of employment in the country, to promote better work-life balance work cultures, in a bid to ease the declining birth rate. From February 2025, the government will offer tax incentives for SMEs that meet the Labour Ministry’s criteria for exemplary work-life balance practices and increase subsidies for those that hire substitute workers to cover employees on maternity leave. When announcing the measures in late September, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said employers and workplace cultures play a key role in encouraging a higher birth rate. He added that the companies benefit as well, because “supporting work-life balance is not simply an increase in costs, but an investment that enhances corporate competitiveness and leads to greater growth”. Apart from creating a new ministry by 2025 to oversee low birth rate issues, the South Korean authorities are also rolling out more measures to incentivise employees to have children. The measures, starting in February 2025, include the doubling of paternal leave from 10 days to 20 days for fathers with newborn children. Parental leave benefits will also be raised to 2.5 million won (S$2,400) per month from the current 1.5 million won, for the first three months after the birth of a child. Mothers with prematurely born babies are granted 100 days of maternity leave instead of the standard 90 days, while fertility treatment leave will be increased from three days to six. Households with newborns will be given priority in housing allocations and low-interest loans for home purchases. At Ma:nyo, the employee birth rate has increased threefold since the introduction of flexible working hours in early 2022. The company, which has just over 100 employees, will see a total of six babies born in 2024. Ma:nyo designer Kim Sol-mi, 34, who has been with the company for seven years, did not think much about flexible work arrangements until after she became a mother around two years ago. Ms Kim Sol-mi, 34, a designer at K-beauty brand Ma:nyo, has a 23-month-old baby and finds the company’s flexi-time work arrangement very “valuable”. ST PHOTO: WENDY TEO She had returned from maternity leave right after the company implemented the new practice. Recently, her now 23-month-old baby had a bone fracture, and it made her realise how “valuable” the flexi-time work arrangement is for a good work-life balance. “The waiting time at paediatric orthopaedic clinics is extremely long, so having the flexibility to step out of the office during work hours was a tremendous help,” said Ms Kim. Other parents told ST that they welcomed the new government measures. Mr Jang Sang-ho’s wife lost her job of 10 years at an architectural design firm after taking two years of parental leave to care for their two sons, now aged six and four. During her leave, she received a government subsidy of up to half of her monthly salary. Mr Jang Sang-ho’s wife lost her job of 10 years at an architectural design firm after taking two years of maternity leave. Fortunately, Mr Jang works at a government agency that has a flexi-work policy. PHOTO: COURTESY OF JANG SANG-HO The subsidy will be capped at 23.1 million won a year from next February, up from 18 million won currently. “Her company had hired someone to replace her during her leave, and when my wife wanted to return, they apologised and said they cannot afford to support both of them at the same time. So my wife had to leave,” Mr Jang told ST. Fortunately for the couple, Mr Jang is a researcher at government agency Korea Institute For Robot Industry Advancement, which since 2021 has implemented a flexi-work policy introduced by the public sector to help parents raising young children. His daily working hours have been shortened by two hours without affecting his income. Instead of working from 9am to 6pm, he now works from 10am to 5pm, allowing him to drop off and pick up his children from childcare. This freed up time for his wife to look for a new position. She has found a similar architectural design job, but with a slightly lower pay than the previous one. If their finances allow, the couple will consider having a third child, given that Mr Jang’s work arrangement allows him to help out with childcare responsibilities. “For my wife, working is not just about the money, it is about her own life and dreams. She put aside her own aspirations to be my wife and the mother to our two children, but I want her to continue pursuing her dreams.” Mr Kim Hyun-soo took turns with his wife, a public servant, to take parental leave to care for their three children, aged 10, four and one. Mr Kim Hyun-soo, pictured here with his family, was promoted, even while he was on parental leave. This inspired his other colleagues to pick up the courage to take parental leave as well. PHOTO: COURTESY OF KIM HYUN-SOO The 42-year-old works at automotive parts company Hyundai Transys, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group. He took one year of parental leave in 2021 to help his eldest daughter adjust to elementary school, and was pleasantly surprised when he was promoted during his leave period. “Being promoted while on leave was surprising. I expected to be excluded, so it felt even more rewarding,” he told ST. As an active member of three parenting communities, Mr Kim is trying to change other fathers’ mindsets towards taking paternity leave. “Many fathers in the community groups express a strong desire to take paternity leave but are hesitant to do so, as it might affect their careers,” he said. Still, he advises them to try taking just one month of leave to spend time with their children. “After they experience the benefits of hands-on parenting, they might be more encouraged to embrace paternity leave benefits, which are a legally protected right.” Get the ST Smart Parenting newsletter for expert advice. For the first time since his season-ending wrist surgery a year ago, Joe Burrow will play in a cold-weather game. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback said he is uncertain if the temperature will have an impact on his wrist during Sunday's matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. "That's a question that remains to be answered," Burrow said, per the Cincinnati Enquirer's Kelsey Conway . "I haven't experienced a cold weather game with that yet. In the past when I've had injuries, cold weather does affect it, so we'll find out. Maybe I'll have a heater on the sideline or something. I haven't really thought about that yet, but we'll see." UVALDE, Texas (AP) — A Texas judge on Thursday refused to throw out criminal charges accusing the former Uvalde schools police chief of putting children at risk during the slow response to the shooting, while a lawyer for his co-defendant said they want to move the upcoming trial out of the small town where the massacre occurred. At a court hearing in Uvalde, Judge Sid Harle rejected Pete Arredondo's claim that was he improperly charged and that only the shooter was responsible for putting the victims in danger. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in the shooting on May 24, 2022. Harle also set an Oct. 20, 2025, trial date. An attorney for Arredondo's co-defendant, former Uvalde schools police officer Adrian Gonzales, said he will ask for the trial to be moved out of Uvalde because his client cannot get a fair trial there. Uvalde County is mostly rural with fewer than 25,000 residents about 85 miles (140 kilometers) west of San Antonio. “Everybody knows everybody,” in Uvalde, Gonzales attorney Nico LaHood said. Both former officers attended the hearing. Nearly 400 law enforcement agents rushed to the school but to confront and kill the gunman in a fourth-grade classroom. Arredondo and Gonzales are the only two officers facing charges — a fact that has raised complaints from some victims' families. Both men have pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of abandoning or endangering a child, each of which carry punishment of up to two years in jail. Gonzales has not asked the judge to dismiss his charges. A federal investigation of the shooting identified Arredondo as the incident commander in charge, although he has argued that state police should have set up a command post outside the school and taken control. Gonzales was among the first officers to arrive on the scene. He was accused of abandoning his training and not confronting the shooter, even after hearing gunshots as he stood in a hallway. Arredondo has said he was for the halting police response. The alleges he did not follow his active shooter training and made critical decisions that slowed the police response while the gunman was “hunting” his victims. It alleges that instead of confronting the gunman immediately, Arredondo caused delays by telling officers to evacuate a hallway to wait for a SWAT team, evacuating students from other areas of the building first, and trying to negotiate with the shooter while victims inside the classroom were wounded and dying. Arredondo’s attorneys say the danger that day was not caused by him, but by the shooter. They argued Arredondo was blamed for trying to save the lives of the other children in the building, and have warned that prosecuting him would open many future law enforcement actions to similar charges. “Arredondo did nothing to put those children in the path of a gunman,” said Arredondo attorney Matthew Hefti. Uvalde County prosecutors told the judge Arredondo acted recklessly. “The state has alleged he is absolutely aware of the danger of the children,” said assistant district attorney Bill Turner. Jesse Rizo, the uncle of 9-year-old Jacklyn Cazares who was killed in the shooting, was one of several family members of victims at the hearing. “To me, it’s hurtful and painful to hear Arredondo’s attorneys try to persuade the judge to get the charges dismissed,” Rizo said. He called the wait for a trial exhausting and questioned whether moving the trial would help the defense. “The longer it takes, the longer the agony,” Rizo said. “I think what’s happened in Uvalde ... you’ll probably get a better chance at conviction if it’s moved. To hold their own accountable is going to be very difficult.” The massacre at Robb Elementary was one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history, and the law enforcement response has been widely condemned as a massive failure. Nearly 150 U.S. Border Patrol agents, 91 state police officers, as well and school and city police rushed to the campus. While terrified students and teachers called 911 from inside classrooms, dozens of officers stood in the hallway trying to figure out what to do. More than an hour later, a team of officers breached the classroom and killed the gunman. Within days of the shooting, the focus of the slow response turned on Arredondo, who was described by other responding agencies as the incident commander in charge. and state investigations have laid bare cascading problems in law enforcement training, communication, leadership and technology, and questioned whether officers prioritized their own lives over those of children and teachers. (Photo by Willy Sanjuan/Invision/AP, File) NEW YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail on Wednesday as he awaits a May sex trafficking trial by a judge who cited evidence showing him to be a “serious risk” of witness tampering and proof he has tried to hide prohibited communications with third parties while incarcerated. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ruled in a five-page order following a bail hearing last week. At the hearing, lawyers for the hip-hop mogul argued that a $50 million bail package they proposed would be sufficient to ensure Combs doesn’t flee and doesn’t try to intimidate prospective trial witnesses. Two other judges previously had agreed with prosecutors that the Bad Boy Records founder was a danger to the community if he is not behind bars. Subramanian concurred. “There is compelling evidence of Combs's propensity for violence,” Subramanian wrote. Lawyers for Combs did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the decision. Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for prosecutors, declined comment. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees. An indictment alleges that he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. A federal appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan considers his bail request. That appeal was put on hold while Subramanian, newly appointed to the case after an earlier judge stepped aside, considered the bail request for the first time. Subramanian said he took a fresh look at all the bail arguments and the evidence supporting them to make his decision. Prosecutors have insisted that no bail conditions would be sufficient to protect the public and prevent the “I'll Be Missing You” singer from fleeing. They say that even in a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Combs has orchestrated social media campaigns designed to influence prospective jurors and tried to publicly leak materials he thinks can help his case. They say he also has contacted potential witnesses through third parties. Lawyers for Combs say any alleged sexual abuse described in the indictment occurred during consensual relations between adults and that new evidence refutes allegations that Combs used his “power and prestige” to induce female victims into drugged-up, elaborately produced sexual performances with male sex workers known as “Freak Offs.” Subramanian said evidence shows Combs to be a “serious risk of witness tampering,” particularly after he communicated over the summer with a grand jury witness and deleted some of his texts with the witness. The judge also cited evidence showing that Combs violated Bureau of Prisons regulations during pretrial detention at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn when he paid other inmates to use their phone code numbers so he could make calls to individuals who were not on his approved contact list. He said there was also evidence that he told family members and defense counsel to add other people to three-way calls so their communications would be more difficult to trace and that he made efforts to influence his trial's jury pool or to reach potential witnesses. Subramanian said his “willingness to skirt” jailhouse rules to conceal communications was “strong evidence” that any conditions of release would not prevent similar behavior. The judge said defense claims that Combs stopped using one particular phone technique criticized by prosecutors was belied by the fact that Combs apparently used it again on Sunday, two days after his bail hearing last week. Even a bail proposal that would include the strictest form of home confinement seemed insufficient, the judge said. “Given the nature of the allegations in this case and the information provided by the government, the Court doubts the sufficiency of any conditions that place trust in Combs and individuals in his employ — like a private security detail — to follow those conditions,” Subramanian wrote. So, when his country's swimmers were being accused of doping earlier this year, one Chinese official cooked up something fast. He blamed it on contaminated noodles. In fact, he argued, it could have been a culinary conspiracy concocted by criminals, whose actions led to the cooking wine used to prepare the noodles being laced with a banned heart drug that found its way into an athlete's system. This theory was spelled out to international anti-doping officials during a meeting and, after weeks of wrangling, finally made it into the thousands of pages of data handed over to the lawyer who investigated the case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who had tested positive for that same drug. The attorney, appointed by the World Anti-Doping Agency, refused to consider that scenario as he sifted through the evidence. In spelling out his reasoning, lawyer Eric Cottier paid heed to the half-baked nature of the theory. "The Investigator considers this scenario, which he has described in the conditional tense, to be possible, no less, no more," Cottier wrote. Even without the contaminated-noodles theory, Cottier found problems with the way WADA and the Chinese handled the case but ultimately determined WADA had acted reasonably in not appealing China's conclusion that its athletes had been inadvertently contaminated. Critics of the way the China case was handled can't help but wonder if a wider exploration of the noodle theory, details of which were discovered by The Associated Press via notes and emails from after the meeting where it was delivered, might have lent a different flavor to Cottier's conclusions. "There are more story twists to the ways the Chinese explain the TMZ case than a James Bond movie," said Rob Koehler, the director general of the advocacy group Global Athlete. "And all of it is complete fiction." In April, reporting from the New York Times and the German broadcaster ARD revealed that the 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for the banned heart medication trimetazidine, also known as TMZ. China's anti-doping agency determined the athletes had been contaminated, and so, did not sanction them. WADA accepted that explanation, did not press the case further, and China was never made to deliver a public notice about the "no-fault findings," as is often seen in similar cases. The stock explanation for the contamination was that traces of TMZ were found in the kitchen of a hotel where the swimmers were staying. In his 58-page report, Cottier relayed some suspicions about the feasibility of that chain of events — noting that WADA's chief scientist "saw no other solution than to accept it, even if he continued to have doubts about the reality of contamination as described by the Chinese authorities." But without evidence to support pursuing the case, and with the chance of winning an appeal at almost nil, Cottier determined WADA's "decision not to appeal appears indisputably reasonable." A mystery remained: How did those traces of TMZ get into the kitchen? Shortly after the doping positives were revealed, the Institute of National Anti-Doping Organizations held a meeting on April 30 where it heard from the leader of China's agency, Li Zhiquan. Li's presentation was mostly filled with the same talking points that have been delivered throughout the saga — that the positive tests resulted from contamination from the kitchen. But he expanded on one way the kitchen might have become contaminated, harkening to another case in China involving a low-level TMZ positive. A pharmaceutical factory, he explained, had used industrial alcohol in the distillation process for producing TMZ. The industrial alcohol laced with the drug "then entered the market through illegal channels," he said. The alcohol "was re-used by the perpetrators to process and produce cooking wine, which is an important seasoning used locally to make beef noodles," Li said. "The contaminated beef noodles were consumed by that athlete, resulting in an extremely low concentration of TMZ in the positive sample. "The wrongdoers involved have been brought to justice." This new information raised eyebrows among the anti-doping leaders listening to Li's report. So much so that over the next month, several emails ensued to make sure the details about the noodles and wine made their way to WADA lawyers, who could then pass it onto Cottier. Eventually, Li did pass on the information to WADA general counsel Ross Wenzel and, just to be sure, one of the anti-doping leaders forwarded it, as well, according to the emails seen by the AP. All this came with Li's request that the noodles story be kept confidential. Turns out, it made it into Cottier's report, though he took the information with a grain of salt. "Indeed, giving it more attention would have required it to be documented, then scientifically verified and validated," he wrote. Neither Wenzel nor officials at the Chinese anti-doping agency returned messages from AP asking about the noodles conspiracy and the other athlete who Li suggested had been contaminated by them. Meanwhile, 11 of the swimmers who originally tested positive competed at the Paris Games earlier this year in a meet held under the cloud of the Chinese doping case. Though WADA considers the case closed, Koehler and others point to situations like this as one of many reasons that an investigation by someone other than Cottier, who was hired by WADA, is still needed. "It gives the appearance that people are just making things up as they go along on this, and hoping the story just goes away," Koehler said. "Which clearly it has not." Review: The Anker Solix C300 rewrites the compact portable power station rule bookCARLSBAD, Calif. , Dec. 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: IONS) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved TRYNGOLZATM (olezarsen) as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglycerides in adults with familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS), a rare, genetic form of severe hypertriglyceridemia (sHTG) that can lead to potentially life-threatening acute pancreatitis (AP). TRYNGOLZA is the first-ever FDA-approved treatment that significantly and substantially reduces triglyceride levels in adults with FCS and provides clinically meaningful reduction in AP events when used with an appropriate diet (≤20 grams of fat per day). TRYNGOLZA is self-administered via an auto-injector once monthly. Experience the full interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/ionis-pharmaceuticals/9295551-en-tryngolza-olezarsen-fda-approval "Today's FDA approval of TRYNGOLZA heralds the arrival of the first-ever FCS treatment in the U.S. – a transformational moment for patients and their families. For the first time, adults with FCS can now access a treatment that substantially reduces triglycerides and the risk of debilitating and potentially life-threatening acute pancreatitis," said Brett P. Monia , Ph.D., chief executive officer, Ionis. "We are proud of our long-standing partnership with the FCS community and are grateful to the patients, families and investigators who participated in our clinical studies, enabling Ionis to make this new treatment a reality. The FDA approval of TRYNGOLZA is also a pivotal moment for Ionis, representing our evolution into a fully integrated commercial-stage biotechnology company – a goal we set out to achieve five years ago. With our rich pipeline of potentially life-changing medicines, we expect TRYNGOLZA to be the first in a steady cadence of innovative medicines we will deliver independently to people living with serious diseases." The FDA approval was based on positive data from the global, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind Phase 3 Balance clinical trial in adult patients with genetically identified FCS and fasting triglyceride levels ≥880 mg/dL. In the Balance study, TRYNGOLZA 80 mg demonstrated a statistically significant placebo-adjusted mean reduction in triglyceride levels of 42.5% from baseline to six months (p=0.0084). Reductions from baseline to 12 months were further improved, with TRYNGOLZA achieving a placebo-adjusted 57% mean reduction in triglycerides. TRYNGOLZA also demonstrated a substantial, clinically meaningful reduction in AP events over 12 months; one patient (5%) experienced one episode of AP in the TRYNGOLZA group compared with seven patients (30%) who experienced 11 total episodes of AP in the placebo group. TRYNGOLZA demonstrated a favorable safety profile. The most common adverse reactions (incidence >5% of TRYNGOLZA-treated patients and at a >3% higher frequency than placebo) were injection site reactions (19% and 9%, respectively), decreased platelet count (12% and 4%, respectively) and arthralgia (9% and 0%, respectively). Results from the Phase 3 Balance study were previously published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). "With no treatment options previously available, we were limited to relying only on extremely strict diet and lifestyle changes as the sole preventative treatment option," said Alan Brown , M.D., FNLA, FACC, FAHA, clinical professor of medicine, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science ; Balance trial investigator. "The FDA approval of TRYNGOLZA is an important moment for people living with FCS, their families and physicians who now, for the first time, have a treatment that significantly lowers triglycerides and decreases the risk of potentially life-threatening acute pancreatitis events, as an adjunct to a low-fat diet. I am excited to have a medicine I can prescribe to my patients that has been shown to change the course of their disease." FCS is a rare, genetic, potentially life-threatening form of sHTG that prevents the body from breaking down fats and severely impairs the body's ability to remove triglycerides from the bloodstream due to an impaired function of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase (LPL). While healthy levels for adults are below 150 mg/dL, people with FCS often have triglyceride levels of more than 880 mg/dL and often have a history of pancreatitis. Those living with FCS have a high risk of potentially fatal AP, which is a painful inflammation of the pancreas, and chronic health issues such as fatigue and severe, recurrent abdominal pain. People living with FCS can also experience psychological and financial stress, which can significantly impact their quality of life. In the U.S., FCS is estimated to impact up to approximately 3,000 people, the vast majority of whom remain undiagnosed. "As a rare and difficult to diagnose disease, FCS has a profound impact on the lives of patients and families. Many people living with FCS have experienced severe pain their whole lives – sometimes so intense they require lengthy hospitalization stays – and struggle through life with daily fatigue, nausea, brain fog and stomach pain," said Lindsey Sutton Bryan , co-founder and co-president, FCS Foundation. "Until now, our treatment options have been limited, relying on diet alone to try to manage triglyceride levels and keep acute pancreatitis attacks at bay. For the first time, adults with FCS have seen their hope for a treatment become a reality." TRYNGOLZA will be available in the U.S. before year end. Ionis is committed to helping people access the medicines they are prescribed and will offer a suite of services designed to meet the unique needs of the FCS community through Ionis Every StepTM. As part of Ionis Every Step , patients and healthcare providers will have access to services throughout the treatment journey provided by dedicated Patient Education Managers and Ionis Every Step Case Managers, including insurance and affordability support, as well as services and resources, such as disease and nutrition education. Visit TRYNGOLZA.com for more information. TRYNGOLZA was reviewed by the FDA under Priority Review and had previously been granted Fast Track designation for the treatment of FCS, Orphan Drug designation and Breakthrough Therapy designation. Olezarsen is undergoing review in the European Union and regulatory filings in other countries are planned. Olezarsen is currently being evaluated in three Phase 3 clinical trials – CORE, CORE2 and ESSENCE – for the treatment of sHTG. Olezarsen has not been reviewed or approved for the treatment of sHTG by regulatory authorities. Webcast Ionis will hold a webcast today at 6:45pm ET to discuss the FDA approval. Interested parties may access the webcast here . A webcast replay will be available for a limited time. About TRYNGOLZATM (olezarsen) TRYNGOLZATM (olezarsen) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglycerides in adults with familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS). TRYNGOLZA is an RNA-targeted medicine designed to lower the body's production of apoC-III, a protein produced in the liver that is a key regulator of triglyceride metabolism. It is the only treatment currently indicated in the U.S. for FCS, a potentially life-threatening disease. For more information about TRYNGOLZA, visit TRYNGOLZA.com . IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION CONTRAINDICATIONS TRYNGOLZA is contraindicated in patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity to TRYNGOLZA or any of the excipients in TRYNGOLZA. Hypersensitivity reactions requiring medical treatment have occurred. WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Hypersensitivity Reactions Hypersensitivity reactions (including symptoms of bronchospasm, diffuse erythema, facial swelling, urticaria, chills and myalgias) have been reported in patients treated with TRYNGOLZA. Advise patients on the signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity reactions and instruct patients to promptly seek medical attention and discontinue use of TRYNGOLZA if hypersensitivity reactions occur. ADVERSE REACTIONS The most common adverse reactions (incidence >5% of TRYNGOLZA-treated patients and >3% higher frequency than placebo) were injection site reactions, decreased platelet count and arthralgia. Please see full Prescribing Information for TRYNGOLZA. About Familial Chylomicronemia Syndrome (FCS) FCS is a rare, genetic disease characterized by extremely elevated triglyceride levels. It is caused by impaired function of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Because of limited LPL production or function, people with FCS cannot effectively break down chylomicrons, lipoprotein particles that are 90% triglycerides. FCS is estimated to impact up to approximately 3,000 people in the U.S. People living with FCS are at high risk of acute pancreatitis (AP) in addition to other chronic health issues such as fatigue and severe, recurrent abdominal pain. People living with FCS are sometimes unable to work, adding to the burden of disease. About the Balance Study Balance is a global, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 3 study evaluating the efficacy and safety of olezarsen in patients with FCS at six and 12 months. The primary endpoint was the percent change from baseline in fasting triglyceride levels at six months compared to placebo. Secondary endpoints included percent changes in triglyceride levels at 12 months, percent changes in other lipid parameters and adjudicated acute pancreatitis event rates over the treatment period. Following treatment and the end-of-trial assessments, patients were eligible to enter an open-label extension study to continue receiving olezarsen once every four weeks. Rule Change: The month of November is about to end and the last month of the year 2024, December, is going to bring with it many big changes (Rule Change From 1st December). The direct impact of these financial changes can be seen on every home and every pocket. These big changes to be implemented in the country with the first date of the new month include changes related to the revision of LPG gas cylinder prices to the credit card of the country’s largest bank SBI (SBI Credit Card Rule). First change – LPG cylinder prices Like every month, many rules are going to change on the first date of this month i.e. from 1 December 2024, which will have a direct impact on the pockets of the common people. On the first date of November, there was an increase in the price of 19 kg commercial LPG gas cylinder. Let us tell you that oil and gas distribution companies revise the prices on the first day of every month and this can be seen this time as well. It is expected that the 14 kg domestic gas cylinder (LPG Cylinder Price) which has been stable for a long time can be revised. Second change – Change in ATF prices Along with the prices of LPG cylinders, the price of air turbine fuel (ATF) is also revised by the oil distribution companies on the first of the month. After this, a change in the price of aviation fuel can also be seen on December 1. The change in this can have a direct impact on air passengers. Third change – SBI credit card rules The third major change from 1 December 2024 is related to credit card users (Credit Card Rule Change). Actually, if you use SBI Credit Card specifically for transactions related to digital gaming platforms / merchants, then new rules are coming into effect from the first of December. According to the website of SBI Cards, 48 credit cards will no longer give reward points on transactions related to digital gaming platforms / merchants. Fourth change – You will have to wait for OTP The decision taken by TRAI to implement traceability rules related to commercial messages and OTP, earlier telecom companies had to implement it by 31 October, but after the demand of many companies, its deadline was extended to 31 November. Telecom companies can implement this rule of TRAI from 1 December. The purpose of this rule change is that all messages sent by telecom companies will be traceable, so that cases of phishing and spam can be stopped. Due to the new rules, customers may face delay in OTP delivery. Fifth change – Bank Holiday If you have any important work related to the bank in the month of December, then let us tell you that more than half of the days in the last month of the year, December, are declared as Bank Holidays. If we look at the RBI’s bank holiday list, these bank holidays have been decided on the basis of different festivals and events in different states and these include second and fourth Saturdays as well as Sunday weekly holidays. (WKBW) — Buffalo police want to use a new technology tool that uses artificial intelligence to scour social media and the dark net for crimes in progress — and even those being planned. Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia wants to use Dataminr which he said can give real-time information to police. The cost would be covered by a technology grant from the state so it wouldn't cost the city any extra money, according to Gramaglia. He also pointed out that the information it searches is all open source so police would not be accessing private accounts — only information posted publicly. Gramaglia said he got a firsthand look at how it works back in November 2022. He was giving a presentation to the New York City Police Department about the mass shooting at Tops earlier that year when police there informed him that there was another active shooter situation unfolding in Buffalo. It was the thwarted shooting at the Alba da Vida methadone clinic on the West Side of Buffalo. "NYPD was advising us in real time that a guy had walked into the methadone clinic on Virginia Street and began shooting," Gramaglia told me. "That information was being put out on social media instantly as it was happening." Gramaglia said he believes it's important for law enforcement to embrace new technology. "We have to leverage technology. We've got great cops, we have phenomenal detectives, they're out there doing great work. You have to be ahead of the curve. You have to have technology. We need help to get that information to us so that we can action that information better. You're absolutely foolish if you don't leverage technology to make your community safer," Gramaglia said. While the cost would be covered by the state, the Buffalo Common Council still has to approve the purchase. The matter is going to go before the Common Council next week. We'll let you know what happens.TikTok is inching closer to a potential ban in the US. So what's next?

Appeal Court sets aside order stopping release of funds to Rivers govtEntrepreneur and Shark Tank India judge Aman Gupta has caused quite a stir with his recent remarks about an unnamed Indian film star, whom he referred to as "an extremely egotistic man." During a podcast appearance on Dostcast , where he was joined by fellow 'shark' Anupam Mittal , the boAt founder opened up about his experience working with the star. Aman recalled how his company had hired the actor as a brand ambassador, only to be taken aback by the star's attitude. “We had this actor as our brand ambassador. He was an extremely egotistic man. In the news, I had always heard good things about him. People only wrote that he is ‘sweet,’ ‘nice,’ ‘kind,’ and ‘humble’... They often mentioned his good behaviour with the paps and his fans, they also wrote that ‘he travels in economy class’, but his attitude was the extreme opposite when he worked with us. This experience taught me that people today have mastered the art of being humble,” Aman shared. The entrepreneur further added that he was confident the actor's true nature would eventually come to light. "However, Indians are pretty smart. One day or the other, they will get to know the reality. They do understand the difference between a genuine person and a pretentious person. They quickly understand which hero has ego, attitude, style and rizz,” he said. While Aman Gupta did not name the actor directly, the clip quickly went viral, leading to widespread speculation about the identity of the "egotistic" star. Fans took to social media to debate who the star could be, with two names emerging as possible suspects. Some users pointed to Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh , who has previously endorsed boAt, while others speculated it could be Kartik Aaryan , another actor known for his humble image and also a boAt brand ambassador. One comment even noted, "It has to be Diljit or Kartik. Both have endorsed boAt and are known for humble image." As the internet continues to buzz with theories, the mystery remains unsolved, leaving fans eager for more answers.

It was the fourth time this season they had conceded four or more and the performance showed why they have the Premier League’s worst defence. When O’Neil and the players went over to acknowledge the visiting supporters there were boos for a run of two wins in 14 league matches. “Whatever the fans think of me, there is definitely no-none working harder than me and I will continue to do so until someone tells me not to,” said O’Neil, who is under increasing pressure with his side second bottom of the table. “I go over there to see them because I appreciate every one of the Wolves fans. They have given me unbelievable support since I arrived at the football club,” he said. “We managed to produce some unbelievable stuff last season with a team that was heavily tipped by most of the nation for relegation. We managed to enjoy it together. “Now it is tough. I was happy to go over there and look them right in the face and take any criticism they want to throw at me. “I accept responsibility for my part in that. Whatever criticism they want to throw at me will not change how I feel about them. “Everyone at this football club needs to do more. We will get back to be ready to fight again on Monday (another crucial game against West Ham, whose manager Julen Lopetegui’s tenure is hanging by a thread). “I will work with everything I have. I will back myself to get the most out of the group. I understand the drive for change (but) you never know how much of a percentage of supporters it is.” Veteran Ashley Young ended Everton’s 370-minute wait for a goal with a 10th-minute free-kick, his first league goal for more than two years, and on-loan Lyon midfielder Orel Mangala blasted home his first for the club to establish a 2-0 half-time lead. Two Craig Dawson own goals secured Everton’s biggest home league win since April 2019, but manager Sean Dyche insisted their issues up front were far from sorted. He said: “It’s our fifth clean sheet in the last eight so the consistency has been there in one degree, we just haven’t been scoring goals. That’s been the hardest thing to find consistently and we haven’t solved it yet. “Goals change everything, they change opinions. That’s what football is like.” The victory was hugely important in a month in which, having been hammered 4-0 at Manchester United, they face top-six sides Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest and undoubtedly eased some of the pressure on Dyche and his players. “I’ve told them how proud I am of them,” he added. “The challenges come thick and fast on and off the pitch and they just keep going. “It’s only a step and there are many more to go but it’s a good step and a positive step. “It’s a temporary moment in time because the next one is a big one (Saturday’s Merseyside derby).”‘Hapless’: Postecoglou left a laughing stock

Mysterious googly eyes go viral after appearing on public art in OregonCINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals have found all manner of ways to lose close games this season. Sunday's 44-38 loss to AFC North rival Pittsburgh can be blamed on a defense that missed tackles and allowed 520 yards of offense, and three turnovers by Joe Burrow. It's become a familiar story in this disappointing season. Cincinnati (4-8) keeps scoring lots of points but can't close out games. Seven of the Bengals’ eight losses this year have been by one score. Burrow has stopped talking about the possibility of going on a run and making the playoffs. He'd just like to win another game or two. “Playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind,” the fifth-year quarterback said. “You never know what can happen, so I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to be the best player I can be for the rest of the season, week in and week out.” The Bengals allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for a season-high 414 yards and three touchdowns. After Wilson threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, the Steelers (9-3) scored on seven of their last nine possessions. They didn't punt until early in the fourth quarter. Burrow lost two fumbles and threw an interception. “We haven’t done enough to earn the win,” coach Zac Taylor said. “It’s a simple as that. It’s nobody else’s fault but our own. We haven’t earned it.” What’s working Turnovers aside, Burrow had another strong game, finishing with 28 for 38 for 309 yards with three touchdowns. Burrow is having a great season statistically, and he hasn't hidden his disappointment and frustration about Cincinnati's narrow losses. ... WR Ja'Marr Chase had a touchdown catch to bring his league-leading total to 13. What needs help The defense missed tackles and couldn't hold off the Steelers, even with Burrow keeping the game close. It didn’t help that LB Logan Wilson (knee) and DT Sheldon Rankins (illness) had to sit out. The Bengals have allowed 34 or more points six times, including in four of the past five games. Cincinnati became the first NFL team to lose four games in a season in which it scored 33 points or more. Stock up RB Chase Brown has been dependable as the featured back since Zack Moss went down with a neck injury. He rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. He also had three catches for 30 yards. The second-year back has 677 yards rushing and six TDs. “He’s really coming along, improving his game every single week,” Burrow said. “Pass game, run game, running hard, understanding his protection responsibilities. He’s a guy that practices hard, plays hard, and a guy you can count on.” Stock down The Bengals' coaching staff. Something has got to give. There was no excuse for the defense to play this badly after a bye week. The unit gave up 500-plus yards for the second time this season. Injuries None were reported in the game. Key number 30.3 — The average points per game by the Bengals against teams with a .500 or better record this season. They are 0-7 in those games. Next steps The Bengals will try to regroup before facing the Dallas Cowboys (5-7) next Monday night. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Mitch Stacy, The Associated Press

Zelenskyy fears Ukraine is ‘testing ground’ for Russian weapons amid rise in Shahed strikesBy Vinnie Romano, chief marketing officer, MySocial.ai For many years, I’ve seen an increase in the misuse of the word “strategy” and what it means to be “strategic” . Throughout my career, I’ve had colleagues and peers glamourise the term, yearning to be a part of the strategic thinking for the firm and its clients. It’s a word thrown around in daily business conversations—sometimes with purpose, but far too often recklessly. Perhaps the reason these longed-after, strategic conversations happen behind closed doors – because you’re not meant to be in the room. “Strategy” is a term that is, ironically, both overused and misunderstood. And that misunderstanding is dangerous. When we confuse “strategy” with “plan” or “tactics,” we risk losing sight of what it takes to make informed, impactful decisions. In an era when artificial intelligence is redefining industries, automating tasks, and even challenging the traditional roles of knowledge workers, this lack of clarity is not just problematic—it’s a liability. In their book Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works , A.G. Lafley, former CEO of Procter & Gamble, and Roger Martin, former Dean of the Rotman School of Management, define strategy as the act of “making specific choices to win in the marketplace.” According to this definition then, strategy is not (and should not be) a buzzword or a fuzzy concept; it is a disciplined framework for decision-making and a sequence of decisions/choices needed to be made, alongside a plan, using tactics to get there. Here’s where I see things often go wrong – people conflate strategy with planning or tactics (or both), losing sight of their distinct roles. • A strategy is a sequence of decisions and choices designed to achieve a specific outcome, centred around the “what” and “why” you are looking to accomplish. It’s about understanding the game you’re playing and making the moves necessary to arrive at the desired destination. • A plan is the blueprint. It starts by identifying where you are now, where you want to go, the targets you need to hit along the way (made visible from the strategy), and how you’ll connect the dots (the tactics). • Tactics are the specific actions you and your team take to execute the plan and achieve your strategic goals. Think of it like this: If strategy is the “why” and “what,” the plan is the “where,” and tactics are the “how.” They’re interconnected but distinct, and using the wrong term dilutes the power of all three. Promotional phrases like these used by “subject matter experts” on LinkedIn only add to the confusion: “Five strategies you can use to [insert goal here] in 2025.” “I help you take the necessary steps in achieving [insert goal here] by implementing a list of strategies...” “Steal my strategies so you can [insert goal here].” I dare say, you’re selling tactics. And if you’re selling us tactics, that’s OK – just be clear on what you’re selling. To illustrate further, consider this: Strategy isn’t just about answering questions like, “How do we increase our market share?” It’s about making specific choices, such as, “We will focus on dominating this particular segment of the market because we can serve it better than anyone else.” It’s not the execution; it’s the insight and intent behind the execution. So, you cannot sell me strategies without speaking to me first and understanding my “why”. You can however flog me your tactics – but if you call them strategies, the chances of me buying your tactics have significantly decreased. In a blog entry from Seth Godin, I came across recently, he framed strategy in a particularly insightful way: “Who we will become, who we will be of service to, and who they will help others to become. This is strategy.” This concept reframes strategy as not just a sequence of business decisions, but as a process of defining identity and purpose. In a world dominated by AI, where algorithms increasingly handle operational tasks, our humanity—our capacity for empathy, vision, and meaningful connection—becomes the cornerstone of true strategic thinking. As AI continues to advance, we face a profound question: What sets us apart? Renowned Marketing Leadership author and former CMO and Partner of McKinsey, Thomas Barta and I discussed the topic of “If AI had the answer, what’s your question?” – where when you think about it, is a polite way of reframing “put shit in and get shit out.” The answer then, lies in our ability to think critically, interpret nuance, and define the words we use with precision. Misunderstanding or misapplying terms like “strategy” is more than an intellectual faux pas—it reflects a lack of rigour and commitment to growth. And I want us to stop this madness. Now is the time to reclaim our words. Let’s stop throwing terms around without understanding their meaning. Strategy, planning, and tactics are not interchangeable—they are interdependent. Understanding these distinctions is the first step toward making choices that truly matter. In a world where AI challenges our roles and redefines the concept of expertise, clarity isn’t just a virtue; it’s a necessity. So, let’s commit to being precise, intentional, and right—because if we don’t, the machines just might do it better.

Yankees’ Aaron Judge wins 2nd AL MVP awardBy RONALD BLUM AP Baseball Writer NEW YORK — New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge earned his second American League MVP award on Thursday. Judge was a unanimous pick for the first time, receiving all 30 first-place votes and 420 points in voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. got all 30 second-place votes for 270 points, and Yankees outfielder Juan Soto was third with 21 third-place votes and 229 points. Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani won the National League MVP , his third MVP award, all of which have been unanimous. New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor was second with 263 points and Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte third with 229. Judge led the major leagues with 58 homers, 144 RBIs and 133 walks while hitting .322. Witt topped the big leagues with a .332 average, hitting 32 homers with 31 stolen bases and 109 RBIs. Soto batted .288 with 41 homers and 109 RBIs. When Judge won his first MVP award in 2022, he received 28 first-place votes while Ohtani got the other two. Judge had discussed the MVP award with Philadelphia’s Bryce Harper, the NL winner in 2015 and ’21. “I was telling him, ‘Man, I’m going to try to catch up to you with these MVPs here, man,’” Judge recalled. “He’d say, hopefully, he could stay a couple ahead of me, which I think he’ll do.” When Judge won his first MVP award in 2022, he received 28 first-place votes while Ohtani got the other two. He is the Yankees’ 22nd MVP winner, four more than any other team. Related Articles Judge was hitting .207 with six homers and 18 RBIs through April, then batted .352 with 52 homers and 126 RBIs in 127 games. “March and April were not my friend this year.” Judge said. “Just keep putting in the work and things are going to change. You can’t mope. You can’t feel sorry for yourself. Especially in New York, nobody’s going to feel sorry for you. So you just got to go out there and put up the numbers?” Balloting was conducted before the postseason.

President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that he wants real estate developer Charles Kushner, father of Mr Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. Mr Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post, calling Charles Kushner “a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker”. Mr Kushner is the founder of Kushner Companies, a real estate firm. Jared Kushner is a former senior Trump adviser who is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka. The elder Mr Kushner was pardoned by Trump in December 2020 after pleading guilty years earlier to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. Prosecutors alleged that after Charles Kushner discovered his brother-in-law was co-operating with federal authorities in an investigation, he hatched a scheme for revenge and intimidation. Mr Kushner hired a prostitute to lure his brother-in-law, then arranged to have the encounter in a New Jersey motel room recorded with a hidden camera and the recording sent to his own sister, the man’s wife, prosecutors said. Mr Kushner eventually pleaded guilty to 18 counts including tax evasion and witness tampering. He was sentenced in 2005 to two years in prison – the most he could receive under a plea deal, but less than what Chris Christie, the US attorney for New Jersey at the time and later governor and Republican presidential candidate, had sought. Mr Christie has blamed Jared Kushner for his firing from Mr Trump’s transition team in 2016, and has called Charles Kushner’s offences “one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes that I prosecuted when I was US attorney”. Mr Trump and the elder Mr Kushner knew each other from real estate circles and their children were married in 2009.Much like the computer industry at large, Michael Dell’s wealth has grown substantially in the 40 years since he started selling computer parts from his dorm room at the University of Texas. The way Michael Dell ran his fledgling company during the second half of the 80s helped him break into — and then shape — the burgeoning computer industry. By using just-in-time inventory management, offering toll-free customer support, and avoiding the in-person retail market, Dell was able to save money, win loyal customers, and gain market share, rapidly growing his business into the household name it is today. 💰💸 Don’t miss the move: SIGN UP for TheStreet’s FREE Daily newsletter 💸💰 Now, four decades later, Dell Technologies remains one of the dominant names in personal computing, and two-time CEO Michael Dell’s net worth lands him among a select group of fewer than 20 individuals whose personal wealth exceeds $100 billion. So, what is he worth today? And how much does he make annually as Dell’s CEO? Diego Donamaria/Getty Images What is Michael Dell’s net worth in 2024? Dell’s net worth fluctuates constantly along with Dell Technologies’ stock price; about half of his wealth comes from his holdings in the company, which trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange. As of this article’s last update (mid-November 2024), Michael Dell had a net worth of about $111.4 billion, making him the 12th-richest person in the world at the time. His wealth first exceeded the $100 billion mark in early March 2024, after Dell’s earnings release for the fourth quarter of 2023 impressed investors, sending the company’s stock skyrocketing by about 32%. Dell’s wealth jumped by almost $14 billion in a single day as a result, and he joined the $100 billion club for the first time. Related: Tim Cook's net worth: How much the Apple CEO's stock is worth Michael Dell’s salary: How much does he make as CEO? In 2024, Michael Dell’s compensation as CEO totals about $3 million, although only $950,000 of this is his salary. He receives an additional $2 million or so in cash bonuses, along with about $47,000 in other compensation, according to sources like salary.com and AFL-CIO, a federation of national and international labor organizations. This level of pay puts Dell’s compensation at about 41 times the median compensation of all Dell employees (about $73,000). In 2023, Dell made about $2.8 million in total compensation, about 38 times the company median. How did Michael Dell get rich? His career explained Dell’s wealth comes largely from his career in the computer industry. What began as a money-making side project during Dell’s undergraduate studies in premedical biology at the University of Texas quickly snowballed into a successful business. The birth of Dell Dell started out by selling upgraded personal computers and computer-upgrade components, which he would assemble in his dorm room, directly to consumers and businesses. From the beginning, he realized that a company could save on costs by eliminating the retail environment and selling entire made-to-order computers directly to customers. By obtaining a vendor’s license, Dell was also able to bid on (and win, due to his low overhead costs) contracts to create computers for the State of Texas. He registered his company, PC’s Unlimited, in January of 1984, just one semester into college. He soon moved (both himself and his company’s operations) out of his dorm room and into a condominium. By May, after finishing his freshman year, Dell dropped out of school, paid $1,000 to incorporate his company as Dell Computer Corporation, and moved the company’s operations once again, this time into a small office in a business park in North Austin. Here, the company’s first generation of staff comprised just “three guys with screwdrivers sitting at six-foot tables upgrading machines,” along with several additional employees to take and fill orders, according to Michael Dell’s 1999 autobiographical account of the company’s early years. The University of Texas had a policy that allowed students to take a semester off “with no academic penalty,” and the company was already bringing in between $50,000 and $80,000 in monthly sales, so Dell didn’t feel he had much to lose, “other than missing a few fraternity parties,” according to his book. Rapid growth, IPO, and the 1990s Dell employed the “just-in-time” inventory and manufacturing principle, meaning the company would only acquire parts and supplies for computers once they were ordered, then assemble and ship them immediately, eliminating the need for additional inventory storage space. Dell also sold its products directly to consumers via telephone order, eliminating the need for the overhead cost of retail space. Together, these practices allowed Dell to undercut its competitors’ prices by about 10%, causing the company to grow rapidly as its customer base exploded. In addition to selling computers by phone, Dell also offered toll-free tech support to customers via telephone, a practice that would later become ubiquitous among computer companies but was uncommon at the time. By 1992, Dell has entered the exclusive ranks of the Fortune 500, with 27-year-old Michael Dell being the youngest-ever CEO of a Fortune 500 company at the time. The 90s were a decade of rapid growth for the computer company. Dell expanded its operations overseas, built improved processors, and started manufacturing and selling servers in addition to PCs and notebooks. In 1990, Dell finally entered the brick-and-mortar retail market, selling its computers at Best Buy, CompUSA, and similar tech chains. In 1996, Dell became one of the first companies to start selling computers online. By the end of the decade, daily online sales reached an impressive $18 million. In 2004, Dell stepped down as CEO of the company he built, remaining on the board of directors and handing the reigns to then-COO Kevin Rollins, although this arrangement only lasted until 2007, when Dell reassumed the CEO role at the request of the company’s board of directors. During his years off, Dell focused heavily, along with his wife Susan on their philanthropic ventures. In a controversial move, Dell enlisted the financial help of Microsoft, Silver Lake Partners, and other lenders to take Dell private for a whopping $25 billion in 2013. Once this deal was finalized, Michael Dell personally owned 75% of the company. During its private years, the company invested heavily in the cloud computing and gaming markets, before going public once again in 2018 at a split-adjusted stock price of around $23.
