It's that time again when 'news' organizations gather to award and pat each other on their backs for another year of lies, bias, and disinformation. It shouldn't be, though. After all, the Ravens have a much bigger trophy to chase. Lost in the MVP drama between Jackson and Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills is that Baltimore is heating up at the exact right time. The Ravens are winners of three straight and 11 of 14 after starting 0-2, and they've taken command of the AFC North. All they need to do to clinch the division -- and the likely No. 3 seed in the playoffs -- is beat the 3-12 Cleveland Browns at home to close out their regular season. The Ravens have been battle-tested against fellow playoff teams the past two weeks, and have dominated both of them by a combined 65-19 margin of victory. The Bills are also rolling, but their defense is a major red flag with upwards of 40 points given up in two of their past three contests. They also barely squeaked by the 3-12 New England Patriots on Sunday, winning 24-21. If the Bills lose out, Baltimore could be the No. 2 seed. That's highly unlikely considering Buffalo's opponents are the 4-11 New York Jets and then the Patriots again, but the point remains that the Ravens are currently playing much better football. That will help Jackson's MVP case over Allen's, but more importantly, it makes the Ravens the biggest threat to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC playoffs. That should be Baltimore's primary concern in the season's final stretch, and it very likely is despite the noise from the narrative-obsessed NFL media. The Chiefs, despite being 15-1, are vulnerable with an offense that hasn't scored more than 30 points in a game all season. It's worth noting the Ravens were an Isaiah Likely foot placement away from taking them to overtime back in Week 1. Kansas City is beatable, and the only reason it feels otherwise is because they're the back-to-back defending champions. Individual awards are great, but the bigger story is that Jackson and the Ravens are playing their way into an opportunity to do something much more impressive: win a Super Bowl.

This release was published on openPR.The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2024 edition - State Of The UAFP – “I’m holding an illustrated book of cheeses,” said a delighted customer, Tomoyo Ozumi, at a growing kind of bookshop in Japan where anyone wanting to sell their tomes can rent a shelf. The concept brings back the joy of browsing real books to communities where many bookstores have shut, and gives readers more eclectic choices than those suggested by algorithms on online sellers, its proponents said. “Here, you find books which make you wonder who on earth would buy them,” said Shogo Imamura, 40, who opened one such store in Tokyo’s bookstore district of Kanda Jimbocho in April. “Regular bookstores sell books that are popular based on sales statistics while excluding books that don’t sell well,” Imamura, who also writes novels about warring samurai in Japan’s feudal era, told AFP . “We ignore such principles. Or capitalism in other words,” he said. “I want to reconstruct bookstores.” President of book review site All Reviews and president of three shelf-sharing bookstore Rokurou Yui in Tokyo’s Kanda Jimbocho district, Japan. PHOTO: AFP PHOTO: AFP His shop, measuring just 53 square metres, houses 364 shelves, selling books – some new, some used – on everything from business strategy and manga comics to martial arts. The hundreds of different shelf renters, who pay JPY4,850-JPY9,350 (USD32-USD61) per month, vary from individuals to an information technology company to a construction firm to small publishers. “Each one of these shelves is like a real version of a social media account, where you express yourself like in Instagram or Facebook,” said the store’s creative director Kashiwa Sato, 59. For now his store Honmaru – meaning the core of a Japanese castle – is only in Tokyo, but Imamura hopes to expand to other regions hit hard by bookstore closures. A quarter of Japan’s municipalities have no physical bookstores, with more than 600 shutting in the 18 months to March, according to the Japan Publishing Industry Foundation for Culture. Imamura in 2022 visited dozens of bookstores that have managed to survive the tough competition with e-commerce giants like Amazon, some by adding cafes or even gyms. “But that is like putting the cart before the horse. Because if a gym is more profitable, 90 per cent of the shop may become a gym, with 10 per cent for bookselling,” Imamura said. Rokurou Yui, 42, said his three shelf-sharing bookstores in the same Tokyo area are filled with “enormous love” for shelf owners’ favourite books. “It is as if you’re hearing voices of recommendations,” Yui told AFP . Owners of regular bookstores put books on their shelves that they have to sell to stay in business, regardless of their personal tastes, he said. “But here, there is no single book that we have to sell, but just books that someone recommends with strong passion and love for,” he said. Yui and his father Shigeru Kashima, 74, who was a professor of French literature, opened their first shelf-sharing bookstore, called Passage, in 2022. They expanded with two others and the fourth opened inside a French language school in Tokyo in October. Passage has 362 shelves and the sellers help attract customers with their own marketing efforts, often online. That is in contrast to conventional bookstores that often rely on owners’ sole sales efforts, he said. On weekends, Yui’s store sometimes “looks as if it were a crowded nightclub with young customers in their 10s, 20s, 30s” with edgy background music playing, he said. Customers and shelf-owners visit the bookstore not only to sell and buy books, but to enjoy “chatting about books”, he said.
David Coote will not appeal against the termination of his contract by referees’ body PGMOL, the PA news agency understands. Coote was sacked earlier this month after the emergence of a video in which he made derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said that a thorough investigation had concluded he was “in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable”. “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare,” PGMOL’s statement on December 9 added. Coote had the right to appeal against the decision but PA understands the Nottinghamshire referee has decided not to. The video which triggered PGMOL’s investigation into Coote’s conduct first came to public attention on November 11. In it, Coote is asked for his views on a Liverpool match where he has just been fourth official, and describes them as “s***”. He then describes Klopp as a “c***”, and, asked why he felt that way, Coote says the German had “a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown” and had accused him of lying. “I have got no interest in speaking to someone who’s f****** arrogant, so I do my best not to speak to him,” Coote said. Later in the video, Coote again refers to Klopp, this time as a “German c***”. The Football Association opened its own investigation into that video, understood to be centred on that last comment and whether Coote’s reference to Klopp’s nationality constituted an aggravated breach of its misconduct rules. The investigation by PGMOL which led to Coote’s contract being terminated is also understood to have looked at another video which appeared to show Coote snorting a white powder, purportedly during Euro 2024 where he was one of the assistant VARs for the tournament. European football’s governing body UEFA also appointed an ethics investigator to look into the matter.
