State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., could almost host a museum dedicated to notable moments in Seahawks history that have occurred under its roof. There was, of course, the pass that shall not be named that prevented a second Super Bowl parade. Glendale was also the locale of Russell Wilson’s first Seahawks game, and his last. It was the field on which some of the key heart and soul players of the Legion of Boom — Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and Bobby Wagner (unless there is another return in the works for Wagner) — played their final games as Seahawks. And on Jan. 7 it also hosted what turned out to be the final game as coach for Pete Carroll, whose 14-year tenure officially ended three days after a 21-20 Seattle win over the Cardinals. While much has changed since then, with Mike Macdonald taking over for Carroll, one constant apparently remaining is Seattle again heading to Glendale for a game that looms pivotal. As has been detailed since the minute last week’s 26-21 win over the Jets ended in a sigh of relief, the Seahawks now have a one-game lead on Arizona and the rest of the NFC West. That lead can grow to two with a win in Sunday’s game, which kicks off at 1:05 p.m. PT, while also giving the Seahawks the head-to-head tiebreaker on Arizona. Or, with a loss, that lead can shrink to a tie, with Arizona holding division and conference tiebreakers on the Seahawks. Arizona would also for the moment hold a tiebreaker on the Rams, who could also move into a three-way tie for first in the West with a Seahawks loss and their own win over visiting Buffalo. Depending on which analytics metric you prefer, Seattle’s chances of making the playoffs rise to roughly 70% with a win but fall to roughly 20% with a loss. And looming ahead are two home games against Green Bay and Minnesota, each with better records and lots to play for. The Seahawks haven’t shied away this week from embracing the stakes of the game. “The challenge is to keep bringing it," Macdonald said Friday. “We've earned this opportunity as a football team to go down there and have such a high-leverage game for us. So, let's go attack that opportunity and keep building, but we've got to keep moving forward." Adding to the dynamic this week is that the two teams played just two weeks ago, a 16-6 Seahawks win in Seattle . It was a game that also proved pivotal; without that win, the Seahawks would be playing out of desperation Sunday, needing a win just to stay in the playoff hunt, instead of potentially taking control of the NFC West. The Seahawks won behind a suddenly resurgent defense holding Arizona to 298 yards — far below its season average of 347.3 that ranks 11 th in the NFL — and contributing the play of the game with a 69-yard pick six by Coby Bryant on a Cardinals fourth-and-one. That leads to the question of how much can two teams change in the span of 14 days? “It's just like a halftime break," Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf said this week. “They're going to make adjustments. We make adjustments and may the best team win, see who can recover the fastest and clean up their mistakes from the first time we met." Teams facing each other twice in a three-game span isn’t a complete rarity. The Seahawks actually did it last year, losing to the 49ers 31-13 at home on Nov. 23, 2023, and then losing again 28-16 on the road on Dec. 10. That, though, came with the added complication for Seattle of a forced quarterback change, with Drew Lock filling in for an injured Geno Smith in the second game. Seattle also experienced it in 2020 when the Seahawks beat the Rams 20-9 at home to clinch the NFC West on Dec. 27, then hosted LA again two weeks later in a wild card playoff game, losing 30-20. In their history, the Seahawks have played the same team twice in a three-week span 10 times. Six times the same team won both. History, though, would indicate that most of the time, it was simply the better team winning each game, such as the 2014 Seahawks beating the 49ers twice in three weeks. Macdonald, who jokingly has called himself “the biggest overthinker in the game," said he may have to avoid the temptation to place too much importance on such factors. “It just kind of is what it is," Macdonald said. “The information that you get in is a little more recent than normal when you play a team the second time. But I think you look at it like any other week. When you play a team twice, what went into the game plan, how you felt during the game, how we debriefed, and obviously, you're going to apply that to what's happened over the last week or so, and kind of the game that was sandwiched in between it. I'd say it's definitely way more like a normal week than not." Arizona’s offense in particular will hope to use that tape to make some adjustments. “They learned a lot from just the game, not just the scheme in what they like to do and the players," Arizona coach Jonathan Gannon said this week of his team’s offense. “But we kind of start from scratch on Monday. Even though we played them two weeks ago, you go through your normal process of game-planning and studying and knowing the opponent and all that. We have probably a little bit better understanding (of) the players, of what they try to do schematically versus us and then who you're going against too. It's a ‘we better learn from it.’” The history the Seahawks hope to perpetuate is their own recent success in regular-season games in Arizona — a 9-1-1 record dating to 2013. “You don't have a lot of time to kind of evolve your team and some of the tendencies on traditional breakdown timelines," Macdonald said. “But, there are a lot of things that have changed. The personnels have changed. You have all the inputs of kind of how the first game unfolded. But, there are a lot of things that we didn't get to that we wanted to and that we got to that we didn't necessarily plan to. I'm sure they feel the same way. So it's hard to put too much stock into what happened in the first game."

The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .Australian Minister for the Environment Tanya Plibersek expressed disappointment after U.N. members failed to reach a global agreement on plastic pollution at the fifth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the Global Plastics Treaty (INC-5). Members representing more than 170 nations negotiated two documents by INC Chair Luis Vayas Valdivieso in Busan, South Korea, but did not reach a deal and will resume the talks next year. The INC comes after U.N. members endorsed a resolution in 2022 called End Plastic Pollution to forge a legally binding agreement by this year. The anticipated legally binding instrument would reflect various alternatives to address the full lifecycle of plastics, the design of reusable and recyclable products and materials, and the need for improved international collaboration to facilitate access to technology, capacity building, and scientific and technical cooperation. “I’m disappointed that negotiators didn’t reach an agreement at the plastic pollution treaty talks in the Republic of Korea this past weekend,” said Plibersek. “Australia came with ambition to finalise a strong global treaty, and we’ve played a key role throughout these negotiations.” Plibersek noted that Australia has been keen on resolving plastic pollution with its initiatives to boost domestic recycling capacity, eliminating single-use plastics, and transforming packaging regulations. She warned that experts have predicted plastic in oceans could outweigh fish by 2050, with plastic production expected to triple by 2026. Addressing the issue also remains crucial for Pacific Island countries. Similarly, both the United States and the European Union expressed disappointment but said they remain committed to come up with an agreement. “While we were disappointed we were unable to reach an agreement, our team leaves this negotiation proud of the ambitious, full-lifecycle approach we brought to Busan—and is resolved to make more progress in the next stages of this negotiation,” said the U.S. Office of the Spokesperson. “I strongly regret that there is no agreement on a new global plastics treaty. If business as usual continues, plastic production will triple by 2060. The EU will remain firmly committed to finding a global solution. Our oceans, our environment and citizens around the globe need it,” said Jessika Roswall, U.S. Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy. Roswall noted that major oil-producing nations and regions including the EU, the UK, Canada, and many Latin American and Pacific countries could not finalise an agreement on a possible target regarding reducing primary plastic polymers production and banning and restricting chemicals of concern in plastic products. “The EU will continue to lead by example, implementing key EU legislation, including on single-use plastics, eco-design for sustainable products, extended producer responsibility, waste management and others,” said the EU.

Elway said Nix, the sixth passer selected in April's draft, is an ideal fit in Denver with coach Sean Payton navigating his transition to the pros and Vance Joseph's defense serving as a pressure release valve for the former Oregon QB. "We've seen the progression of Bo in continuing to get better and better each week and Sean giving him more each week and trusting him more and more to where last week we saw his best game of the year," Elway said in a nod to Nix's first game with 300 yards and four touchdown throws in a rout of Atlanta. For that performance, Nix earned his second straight NFL Rookie of the Week honor along with the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award. "I think the sky's the limit," Elway said, "and that's just going to continue to get better and better." In a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press, Elway also touted former coach Mike Shanahan's Hall of Fame credentials, spoke about the future of University of Colorado star and Heisman favorite Travis Hunter and discussed his ongoing bout with a chronic hand condition. Elway spent the last half of his decade as the Broncos' GM in a futile search for a worthy successor to Peyton Manning, a pursuit that continued as he transitioned into a two-year consultant role that ended after the 2022 season. "You have all these young quarterbacks and you look at the ones that make it and the ones that don't and it's so important to have the right system and a coach that really knows how to tutelage quarterbacks, and Sean's really good at that," Elway said. "I think the combination of Bo's maturity, having started 61 games in college, his athletic ability and his knowledge of the game has been such a tremendous help for him,'" Elway added. "But also Vance Joseph's done a heck of a job on the defensive side to where all that pressure's not being put on Bo and the offense to score all the time." Payton and his staff have methodically expanded Nix's repertoire and incorporated his speed into their blueprints. Elway lauded them for "what they're doing offensively and how they're breaking Bo into the NFL because it's a huge jump and I think patience is something that goes a long way in the NFL when it comes down to quarterbacks." Elway said he hopes to sit down with Nix at some point when things slow down for the rookie. Nix, whose six wins are one more than Elway had as a rookie, said he looks forward to meeting the man who won two Super Bowls during his Hall of Fame playing career and another from the front office. "He's a legend not only here for this organization, but for the entire NFL," Nix said, adding, "most guys, they would love to have a chat with John Elway, just pick his brain. It's just awesome that I'm even in that situation." Orange Crush linebacker Randy Gradishar joined Elway in the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year, something Elway called "way, way overdue." Elway suggested it's also long past time for the Hall to honor Shanahan, who won back-to-back Super Bowls in Denver with Elway at QB and whose footprint you see every weekend in the NFL because of his expansive coaching tree. Elway called University of Colorado stars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders "both great athletes." He said he really hopes Sanders gets drafted by a team that will bring him along like the Broncos have done with Nix, and he sees Hunter being able to play both ways in the pros — but not full time. Elway said he thinks Hunter will be primarily a corner in the NFL but with significant contributions on offense: "He's great at both. He's got great instincts, and that's what you need at corner." It's been five years since Elway announced he was dealing with Dupuytren's contracture, a chronic condition that typically appears after age 40 and causes one or more fingers to permanently bend toward the palm. Elway's ring fingers on both hands were originally affected and he said now the middle finger on his right hand is starting to pull forward. So, he'll get another injection of a drug called Xiaflex, which is the only FDA-approved non-surgical treatment, one that he's endorsing in an awareness campaign for the chronic condition that affects 17 million Americans. The condition can make it difficult to do everyday tasks such as shaking hands or picking up a coffee mug. Elway said what bothered him most was "I couldn't pick up a football and I could not imagine not being able to put my hand around a football." Get local news delivered to your inbox!

X’s Yaccarino praises child safety bill and urges House backingSHARON — For some schools in Mercer County, last weekend marked the start of the basketball season. For others, their season began Friday. Four teams traveled to Sharon High School, including two valley schools, for the annual tipoff tournament, ready to compete to secure their first wins of the season. Farrell lost their opener to Mars by a score of 71-59, while Sharon beat Erie Prep Academy 87-34. Farrell won the tipoff, and the tournament was officially underway. Mars got off to a 5-0 start thanks to a tough shot by Ben Detisch and a triple from Drew Navetta. Nemo Jones hit a free throw for Farrell’s opening points, but after an Austin Campbell dagger, they trailed 8-1. Juelz Johnson and Tre Cousins each hit a tough layup to cut it back down to a one score lead, but Mars went on a shooting frenzy. The Fightin’ Planets hit five triples, led by Austen Wroblewski who drained two, while Drew Navetta, Detisch, and Chaes Thimons hit one each. Mars led 21-10 after the opening quarter. The second quarter started much better for the Steelers. Johnson stole the ball then found Julius Phillips on a nice pass. The next possession Cousins drained a long triple, while Mars was held scoreless for two minutes. A minute later Jones hit a triple to cut it back down to a one score game with 4:45 left in the half. Mars got hot once again after. Detisch scored four more points and Nevetta hit another trey. Campbell also scored on a tough layup right as the half was about to expire to earn an and-one, which he knocked down. Mars led 33-23 at the half with Detisch leading the way with nine points. Jones had eight points for the Steelers. Cousins had a big third quarter for Farrell, scoring six points, but it wasn’t enough to put a dent in Mars’ lead, which had a plethora of shooters stay hot. During the third quarter break, Farrell head coach Myron Lowe was called for a technical. Wroblewski hit both free throws for Mars. Mars ran away with it in the fourth quarter with Wroblewski sinking several more big shots and Cambell adding a few and some assists. Lowe received another technical a few minutes into the fourth, and the game had seemingly gotten too far out of hand. Both sides emptied out their benches for the rest of the game. Wroblewski led the day for Mars with 23 points, six rebounds and two assists. He went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Detisch added another 17 points and seven rebounds, while Campbell had nine points, seven rebounds and six assists. Johnson led the way for Farrell with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Cousins added 14, including two triples, and Jones had nine points and four rebounds. “I don’t think we played well at all. We didn’t play hard enough. I told them before the game we had to box out and do the little things, and we didn’t do that at all today,” Lowe said. “We’ll be back playing again tomorrow obviously, but after that we’ll be in the gym. We did the same thing last year, we have to make sure we’re doing the little things.” The Yeti won the tipoff, but suffered a backcourt violation on the opening possession. Levi Hailstock started the game off for Sharon’s first three points, and from then on, Sharon was on a rampage. Derek Douglas scored 12 in the quarter and Cedrick Boyd added a three-pointer, along with a few other contributions. Sharon led 21-5 after the first quarter. Aaron Rodriquez and Hugo Rodriquez scored the only two baskets for Erie Prep Academy. The Yeti also suffered another mistake, when a player not listed in the scorebook checked into the game, causing a technical foul. The second quarter was more of the same. Sharon utilized their full rotation and found success from everyone. Douglas scored six more points and Owen Schenker caught fire, hitting four triples and scoring 14 points. Aaron Rodriquez fouled out in the first half, but Ziming Weng and Hugo Rodriquez added some more buckets. Sharon led 54-13 at the half. The second half was played with a running clock, and Sharon slowly emptied its bench throughout. Before the bench was released, Schenker, Douglas and Hailstock continued to elevate the squad, dominating before they checked out of the game. Guys like John Norris, Jeremiah Nixon, Gha’fir Lampkins and Cyleim Smith played big minutes for the Tigers as they finished off the 87-34 win. Erie saw Femi Lawal go on a six-point run before the game expired. “I thought we played really good. I thought we came out with energy. I knew we’d be a little nervous in the beginning with some new guys, but we played really good and had a real good game,” Sharon head coach Louis Brown said. “It was good to see the young guys get in there, and have no let up once they got in. They played hard and deserved to play, so it was great to see them get in there and play great.” Douglas finished with 22 points, four assists and four steals. Schenker had 20 with six triples. Hailstock had 21 points, a pair of rebounds, and two steals. Boyd also provided a team-high eight boards. “Those guys (Douglas, Schenker and Hailstock) are who our season will depend on. They are the guys that I ride the hardest. They probably hate me this most, and love me sometimes,” Brown said. “But them three guys are going to define our year.” For Erie Prep, H. Rodriquez led with sevn points and 12 rebounds. Weng had six points, Hugo Castano had six and Lawal finished with six points and 4 rebounds. Saturday’s matchups were set before the tourney tipped off on Friday. Photo by Steve Fecht for General Motors DETROIT — General Motors plans to sell its stake in a $2.6 billion electric vehicle battery cell plant in Michigan to its joint venture partner LG Energy Solution, the automaker announced Monday. The Detroit carmaker said it expects to recoup its investment in the facility, which a source familiar with the plans said is anticipated to be roughly $1 billion. The sale is part of a non-binding agreement between the two companies that's anticipated to close during the first quarter of next year, GM said. The nearly completed, 2.8 million-square-foot plant in Lansing, Michigan, was expected to be the third battery cell facility of the joint venture, known as Ultium Cells LLC, following plants in Ohio and Tennessee that have already opened and are operational. The Lansing plant was announced in January 2022, and the two companies first announced their joint venture five years ago. GM's move comes as the automaker attempts to right-size production of electric vehicles and confronts slower-than-expected consumer demand. It also comes amid uncertainty regarding federal incentives for manufacturing and purchasing EVs in the U.S. under President-elect Donald Trump . The automaker said the sale does not impact its overall ownership stake in the joint venture or its future plans for a separate joint venture plant with LGES rival Samsung SDI. GM CEO and Chairman Mary Barra and LG Chem Vice Chairman and CEO Hak-Cheol Shin at the automaker's battery lab in Warren, Mich., where the companies announced a new $2.6-billion joint venture on Dec. 5, 2019. GM "We believe we have the right cell and manufacturing capabilities in place to grow with the EV market in a capital efficient manner," GM CFO Paul Jacobson said in a release. "When completed, this transaction will also help LG Energy Solution meet demand by leveraging capacity that's nearly ready to come online and it will make GM even more efficient." GM said the South Korean battery supplier will have immediate access to the Lansing facility to begin installation of equipment. The plant, which currently employs nearly 100 people, was expected to begin operating by the end of this year. Separate from the sale of its stake in the Lansing facility, GM on Monday announced it will extend a 14-year battery technology partnership with LGES to include the development of an emerging type of battery cell called prismatic cells. Prismatic cells are a flat, rectangular shape with a rigid enclosure, which allows for space-efficient packaging within battery modules and packs. GM said the cells are expected to reduce EV weights and costs, while simplifying manufacturing by reducing the number of modules and mechanical components. "We're focused on optimizing our battery technology by developing the right battery chemistries and form factors to improve EV performance, enhance safety, and reduce costs. By extending our partnership with LG Energy Solution, we're taking an important step towards these goals," Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery cell and pack, said in a release. GM had previously said it planned to expand its battery cell technologies from its flat "Ultium" pouches to include other forms such as prismatic cells.
