For “Hysteria!” actresses Anna Camp and Julie Bowen, horror is harder than comedy. “Horror is really hard actually because there is a fine line you have to walk; you have to make it feel grounded and you’re put in these extreme circumstances: You’re being possessed or pulled through the air, there’s nothing you can do to relate to that,” explained Camp of “Pitch Perfect” fame. “With comedy, you can have a relatable situation and go, ‘I’ve been in situations like that.’ There’s nothing you can compare (horror) to, so you have to use your imagination. I find it harder. Your imagination goes home with you at the end of the day. You’re still thinking crazy thoughts.” Bowen, best known for playing Claire Dunphy on “Modern Family,” agreed. “Comedy’s pretty binary because it’s like either you can make people laugh or you don’t. I can’t watch horror. I’m terrified, terrified! I am the easiest scare in the world, so as far as doing (horror), I want to make it as real as possible. It was hard because I had to be really, really crazy. There were times when I’d get back to my hotel room at 3 a.m., I didn’t want to be alone in my head,” said Bowen, laughing. Camp, Bowen, Royal Oak native Bruce Campbell (“Evil Dead”), showrunner David A. Goodman (“Futurama”), and Ypsilanti native/creator Matthew Scott Kane (“American Horror Story”) were promoting “Hysteria!” at the New York Comic Con in October. The horror series is streaming on Peacock. Set in the fictional Michigan town of Happy Hollow, the first episode of “Hysteria” begins with a popular quarterback’s disappearance and a pentagram is discovered on a garage door. As a result, rumors of the occult and satanic influence run rampant through the town. A trio of outcasts in a heavy metal band called Dethkrunch exploit this by rebranding themselves as a satanic metal band, which leads to them becoming the targets of the town’s witch hunt. “Something on my mind a lot in 2019 was we’re living in this post-factual age with social media. It seemed like decades and decades ago, you could trust the news. Now everything is in question. When lies end up getting disseminated as truth, that starts to warp people’s version of reality. Suddenly, they’re living in a world other people are not. That was going on in the world I was living in and I very quickly connected it to the 1980s satanic panic. It’s not really that different because people were saying Ozzy Osbourne, Jason Voorhees (of ‘Friday the 13th’), and the Smurfs were going to turn your kids into satanists and kill you in your sleep. That didn’t happen. It wasn’t true, but so many people got worked up into such a fervor over it, bad things happened. ... It was smoke without fire,” Kane said. “Disinformation is not new,” Campbell said. “Disinformation will tear a town apart.” Campbell portrays Happy Hollow Police Chief Ben Dandridge. “This guy’s a reasonable cop; he’s a rational person who doesn’t treat the teenagers like they’re idiots. It’s all very refreshing,” he said. “I want to play that guy again. I want cops to be that guy. I’m playing the cop (that) cops need to be. That’s my whole motivation for playing this guy: How would you like cops to be, especially the guy in charge, the chief of police? They’re lucky to have Chief Dandridge.” “It was truly an exciting moment when Bruce signed on,” Goodman said. By the end of the first episode, a supernatural phenomenon happens to Linda Campbell, played by Bowen. “Linda seems like one thing, then you realize she’s bananas. She’s either bananas or she’s possessed. Either way, it’s a complicated thing to play,” Bowen said. “With Julie, you can have your cake and eat it too,” Kane said. “She’s this fun, quirky mom. ... As the episode goes on, she’s pulled deeper into this thing and crazy stuff starts happening. That final act of the first episode was my favorite moment with her because this announced that this is not Claire Dunphy. We’re not doing that again; we’re pushing her as a performer. “Julie was so excited about doing stunts. She told us on many occasions she’s very sturdy and can take it. The same goes for Bruce and for Anna. We didn’t ask anyone to give us a flavor of the thing they did before. We cast people we loved so much (in their famous projects) that we wanted to give them the opportunity to do the exact opposite.” Added Bowen: “I got this script and was like, ‘Oh great. She’s a mom. How fun.’ I love moms. I’m a mom, but I felt this was not worth flying out of town to Georgia and being away from my kids. Then I got to the end of the pilot and was like, ‘She’s crazy!’ Is she possessed? There’s a lot more questions. It’s fun to just stretch again and do things I haven’t done in a while, which I found really exciting.” Kane said he felt lucky Bowen signed on at the beginning. “She was the first adult actor to sign on. That gave us such credibility to have a two-time Emmy-winning actor leading this show. Suddenly, it goes from this script from a relatively unknown writer into the new Julie Bowen show,” he said. It was the quality of the writing that attracted Camp, Bowen and Campbell to “Hysteria!” “I loved the script; it was incredibly well-written. It was immersed in the time period. It was such a good coming-of-age story, too — the feeling of being in high school again, being in the 1980s,” Camp said. “I talked to Matt who said my character (Tracy) was incredibly pivotal to the series and we’ll learn about why she is the way she is. So I was like, ‘I’d love to do this!’” For Campbell, the writing is everything. “A lot of times, I’ll get a script that could make the words interchangeable with every other character because the writing is very bland and just doesn’t have the detail you need. This was different. Every character was pretty distinct and pretty well-drawn,” he said. “It’s quality. It’s not a (expletive) show. It’s a real show that’s playing around with interesting themes. A lot of it is still relevant to this day.” “Hysteria!” has other Michigan connections, including University of Michigan alumnus Jonathan Goldstein (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Dondero High School alumnus Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”), who both serve as executive producers. Kane explained why he set “Hysteria!” in Michigan. “You write what you know. I grew up in Ypsilanti, so that had a lot to do with it. More importantly, when you’re in a small town in the Midwest — somewhere like Michigan — these things don’t ever happen and word spreads fast and paranoia spreads quickly and (everything’s) blown out of proportion and takes up a lot of people’s minds,” he said. “Whether or not something is real doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if there are people willing to believe it does and willing it into the world. What does it matter if it’s objectively real or living rent-free in someone’s head?”Hamilton and High Point knock off Hampton 76-73CHICAGO , Dec. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of nearly 200,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and medical students in the U.S., more than 20 states and cities across the nation are observing December 2024 as Osteopathic Medicine Month. BRYANT 97, TENNESSEE STATE 85

By Agatha Emeadi Bob -Manuel Udokwu is an award-winning Nollywood legend. He is one of the young faces that graced the screen in the 1990s. He was a leading voice in Checkmate, the biggest television soap opera in the country then, as well as in the masterpiece called ‘Living in Bondage.’ While still strong in the acting profession, he was groomed by the likes of the late Prof Ola Rotimi. Udokwu, a proud pioneer member of Nollywood, said “Living in Bondage’ is the foundation of what is known as Nollywood in Nigeria today.” In this interview with Sunday Sun, he said: “Through acting, I have been part of Anambra State government since 2013.” How did you become interested in acting and the entertainment industry? I did not get into the industry. I am rather part of the pioneers of the industry. I found out very early in life that I have a precious gift in acting. The first time I appeared on stage was when I was in primary two. The second time was when I was in primary four that I played the lead role in full length play and by my primary six, I represented my school for radio and television children programme in Enugu, where I was born and bred. So, that was where the interest began. But I did not know it was going to be part of me professionally. While in secondary school, I did not do drama, rather I was part of debating society and at some point, I was the vice president of junior debate. After I finished secondary school, I found myself going to NTA Enugu to look out for the producers of television drama. I was doing that and became part of programmes on TV in Enugu. Then, I also got auditioned to be a presenter in Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Enugu then. I was privileged to present in studio audio participation programme called ‘Guess the Tune,’ which involves playing a record with a studio audience, play a little record, ask the audience to guess the title of the album, song, and artiste or group that recorded it. All these were fun programmes before I gained admission into the University of Port Harcourt to study Theatre Arts. You were the first that broke the jinx in Nollywood with ‘Living in Bondage’ that reigned supreme in the 90s. How did you come about that legendary ‘Living in Bondage?’ I was invited. I was already playing one of the lead roles in Checkmate which was a very big soap opera then. On a certain day, I got a letter from Chief Kenneth Nnebue, who owned Net Video Link, he invited myself and the late Francis Agu to his office in Surulere. When we got there, he told us about rehearsal being done for the upcoming Igbo Language film, he wanted us to be part of it. We did not go for audition, but just assigned roles which we eventually played. We attended a few rehearsal with them which was recorded, but when the time came, honestly, nobody had an idea what was going to happen, when it was finally released, it became a monster-hit that formed the foundation of what is today Nigerian film industry (Nollywood). How did you rise to stardom? I think it is the society that made me a star. I was doing the work that I trained professionally at the University of Port Harcourt by the late Prof Ola Rotimi who wrote ‘The gods are not blame.’ I was just doing the work professionally and believe people saw what I was doing, which was making impact on the society and recognition came with it. I did not go into entertainment in search of stardom or other things like the younger ones today. No. I was simply doing the work that I love with the talent that I had which has been very much polished by professional training at the Creative Arts Department, University of Port Harcourt. That is it. Parents then would love their children to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, among other prestigious professions, but not entertainers. What was the feeling of your parents then and now that you have succeeded in the industry? Honestly, being of Igbo parentage, one knows that they are not readily into entertainment at that point. It is either one goes to school a little bit, then go into the popular apprenticeship system that the Igbo tribe has popularized all over the world. Or you are into pure education to acquire university degrees up to Master’s degree. Those were the two options for an average Igbo family then. The entertainment industry was seen by the Igbo people as a place for the never do wells, or what the legendary Chinua Achebe would describe as ‘Efulefu.’ (Those who rebel against the society). For me, I have some form of resistance from my parents especially my father. My mother was more understanding, conciliatory and was more of the go-between my father and myself. Eventually, my father relented because even before I got admission, I was doing things on radio, was appearing on amateur productions of television and radio. So, the signs were there, just that allowing your son to take this up as a profession was not a thing for an Igbo parent. I count myself lucky that it did not result into serious disagreement. At some point, they let me be; then I got admission and that was it. Again, the other side of it was when I debuted on national television in 1981 on Checkmate, my parents loved it. It was like an innovation because people from the East then do not appear on national television so much at that time. Lagos was where everything was happening. The recording was done in Lagos and it was only Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) that serviced the whole country. So, it made a difference that people in Sokoto at the same time with people in Bayelsa, people who grew up with me wait every Thursday to see me on the screen. Those whose life has crossed path with yours will always let people know that I knew him before now. So, it was a good feeling. My parents would tell me things like ‘when they are passing by a street, they would hear, oh that is the father or mother of Bob-Manuel. I guess they were proud. So, over the years, film industry evolved and I became a major part of it and it was a thing of pride for them. How have you been coping with the rise? I don’t have to cope with the job I am doing. It is my job, I am trained. You can only cope when it is not your field like most people in the industry today have no serious professional idea about what the whole thing is all about, they just want to be seen on film and television and then jumping. So, those are the ones that are struggling. I am not struggling. I am Nollywood and Nollywood is me. What opportunities being in the entertainment industry brought you? Well, the major one is that it was as a result of entertainment industry that I was brought into government in Anambra State. In 2013, then Governor Peter Obi appointed me as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Creative Media. That was the last year of his administration; shortly after the appointment, in the last quarter, we were beginning to campaign for the next governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano. When Obiano came in, he retained me as SSA on Creative Media (Movie/Entertainment industry). That was the position I held until the incumbent governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo appointed me as Special Adviser, on Entertainment, Pleasure and Tourism. So, one can say that I have served two governors successfully and on the third one now. Since 2013, I have been part of governance in Anambra State. Apart from the government, it has opened other doors. I will commend the airline industries in Nigeria especially the pilots. With the cost of air ticket now, when one tries to buy one, the moment pilots see me, they would kindly upgrade me to business class if there is chance and I am grateful to them. It shows they recognize the work we do. Some would tell me, Bob, I am your fan. It is a humbling experience. It opened doors of opportunities. What about the challenges encountered? There is no profession that does not have its challenges. The financial reward is not commensurate to the effort we put in; especially now that the children are older, unlike when we started as young, single, less-responsibilities boys. One’s financial obligation was personal, then if one’s parents are alive, you bear part of their financial burden. People expect you to be like someone who comes from the moon forgetting that we live in the same country, buy from the same market, drive through the rough times. So, everything that affect one does so to another. But again, most times, the society gives double standard for the entertainers. They expect you to live above board financially, people seek for financial assistance without seeking to know your own obligations. In Africa, we have extended families, even if your siblings do not come for you, what about your nephews and nieces? Others will taunt them, saying ‘You have an uncle like Bob-Manuel and you complain you do not have money?’ Another challenge in the industry is that at every time, Nigerians want to take advantage of you. When you get into a store, an item that was sold for a particular price will be inflated right before you. I juxtapose it when I travel abroad, the same Nigerians who watch your films will bend backwards to give you gift and discount and make you comfortable. In our climate, everyone wants to extort from you because you are a Nollywood star. Once I have also received a goodwill from a man who invited me to a luxury lounge in Doha. The sum totality of it is that the society treats one better. Talk about family, siblings and growing up? I was born in Enugu, in the area called Coal Camp. Back in the 70s Coal Camp could be likened to Ajegunle in Lagos. It was called Coal Camp because it was closer to coal minning site that was discovered in the early 20s. The young men that came to do coal mining work started settling there. It was quite crowded and a place where low-income earners could afford accommodation immediately after the war. It was more congested, survival of the fittest and all kind of things. We thank God that we were able to rise above that. It was also crime-infested, but then good things also come out of Nazareth. Today, a lot of us who grew up in Coal Camp are proud of what we have become. My father was a civil servant in Public Works Department (PWD), now known as Ministry of Works. Then, my mother was a petty trader in Ogbete market in Enugu. We are six in number. Three boys and three girls, I am number four and the second son. My primary school was St. Peters Primary school, Ogbete, Coal Camp Enugu while my secondary school was at Oraukwu Grammar School before I gained admission into University of Port Harcourt, where I studied Theatre Arts, majoring in acting. Next was my Master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from University of Lagos. Personally, I love reading a lot. I read my first novel ‘Coffin from Hong Kong’ written by James Hardley Chase while in Primary Six. By my class three in secondary school, I have read all James Hardley Chase novels that I came across. I also read other novels for pleasures and desire to know the English Language. Back them in primary and secondary schools, English teachers encouraged us to read newspapers, including old ones, magazines and novels. In fact, some came to class and ask students to explain the novels they have read. Our teachers worked hard on us then and it was more of entertainment for me. I spend a lot of mental energy than physical. I am also gifted in fine arts. I was seeking for admission for Fine and Applied Arts before I gained Theatre Arts. I also love singing. I have songs, professionally done songs in Oritz Willkie studio, which have not been released. At my spare times, I love watching documentaries because I like to educate my mind and learn the things that one will not learn in school. What advice would you give to the younger ones who want to be like you? My philosophy is work hard, believe in yourself and trust God. So, the advice I give to the young ones who will listen is to be disciplined, be patient as you diligently pursue your dream. In the entertainment world today, one sees a lot of men who seek for supports on social media unlike the women, what do you say about this? Saying that women are fine with no issues is not totally true. We live in the society where disclosure is an issue. Generally, people in the entertainment industry might be going through different phases of life, but one hardly knows. Apart from being in the industry, how many of our public officers do we know their health status? It is not peculiar to the men or our industry, it is simply because we are in the eyes of the public. What happens to men is that they hardly get help from anybody and it is societal. Back during childhood, if a five-six years old boy and girl are playing and the girl falls down, the whole crowd will gather, lift her up and pamper her to stop crying. When a boy falls and begins to cry, no one rushes to him, from a distance it will be stop crying, don’t you know you are man, men do not cry. Then the boy swallows all the pain inside, that was what we grew up with. Men run to nobody because no one is willing to help them. For women, they do not readily come out like that, some would have died in the industry before family sources open up. This goes to say that men have a lot of burden to bear. To think that women billionaires still expect their thousand-counting husbands to take care of the bills in the house, and this is our own society. Yet, women still want to be given equal status on the table. Our women should also begin to think more about assisting the men while the men should also learn to swallow their pride as some of our colleagues did when they were in difficulty. This brings me to an important matter. Women have gone so far in advocating for the girl child in every ramification to the total exclusion of the boy child. We are running a risk of creating boys that will become men and become problem in future. Otherwise, why the different association for women? There are umbrella bodies like Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Union of Journalists, Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, why then would women form their own women association when the parent associations are existing? It is discrimination and I think the men should take them to court for discrimination. Let us balance this because the same women give birth to the boys like they did for the girls. So, when advocating for the girl-child, spare some thoughts and action, also advocate for the boy-child for the sake of the future. Bureau of Meteorology Senior meteorologist Angus Hines said Melbourne could reach a new weather record on the Boxing Day Test. “A very hot Boxing Day for large parts of the country,” Mr Hines said. “Melbourne could be the warmest day for the first day of the Boxing Day test that we’ve seen on record.” Melbourne is currently tipped to hit 39C on Boxing Day, with those flocking to the MCG for the test likely to need lots of sunscreen. Watching the clash between Australia and India is a holiday staple among families across the country, with tickets to the first day having sold out earlier this month. Sydney is set to hit a high 30C on the day of the iconic match, with Brisbane forecast for a top of 29C followed by 26C in Perth, 36C in Adelaide, 29C in Hobart, 36C in Canberra, and 35C in Darwin. MILLIONS TO SWELTER THROUGH HEATWAVE AHEAD OF CHRISTMAS Parts of Western Australia including the Pilbara and the Gascoyne region could reach up to 46C over the next few days. Mr Hines said temperatures in WA were tipped to soar between 10C and 15C higher than usual for this time of year over the coming days. “Saturday, Sunday, Monday are all looking to be above average for western parts of the state,” Mr Hines said. “Temperatures in the high 30s to mid 40s across large parts of WA. “In Perth the temperature is 38C today, 40C and 41C over next couple days, whereas for parts of the interior north temperatures could be even warmer — potentially as high as 46C around Marble Bar.” Marble Bar is set to hit 46C on Saturday right through to Christmas Eve, with temperatures only briefly dropping down to 45C on Monday. Pannawonica is set to hit 45C on Sunday right through to Christmas Eve, while Mount Augustus is tipped to reach 45C on Saturday. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before dropping down to 43C on Christmas. Mr Hines said other parts of Australia are in for a “reasonably warm weekend”, with NSW set to hit temperatures in the low 30s across much of the state. However Mr Hines said there will be a “cooler change” between Saturday and Christmas. “Much cooler weather for Tasmania, Victoria, NSW an ACT just for a round about a day and a half as that cold front comes through,” he said. “By Tuesday afternoon, which is Christmas Eve ... temperatures are starting to climb again. “By Christmas Day we’re seeing those temperatures really start to build and spike in southern parts of the country.” Temperatures in South Australia could hit as high as 15C above average over the coming days with temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s. Sydney is tipped to reach 29C on Saturday while Melbourne is set to hit 21C. Brisbane is expected to hit a high of 31C, while Perth is set to hit 38C. Adelaide can expect a top of 28C, while Hobart is set to hit 20C. Canberra is set to hit 34C, with Darwin expected to hit the same high despite the potential for thunderstorms.

Resettlement of TTP militants: Nation, army paying in blood for one man's error#ubet63

NEW YORK — Stoli Group USA, the owner of the namesake vodka , has filed for bankruptcy as it struggled to contend with slowing demand for spirits, a major cyberattack that has snarled its operations and several years of fighting Russia in court. The company in its bankruptcy filing said it is “experiencing financial difficulties” and lists between $50 million and $100 million in liabilities. Stoli vodka and Kentucky Owl bourbon will continue to be available on store shelves while the company navigates the Chapter 11 process, which only pertains to its U.S. business. Until 2022, Stoli was sold as Stolichnaya in the United States, which loosely translates to “capital city” in Russian. The company shortened its title following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and boycotts against Russian-branded vodkas . Stoli Group’s founder, Russian-born billionaire Yuri Shefler, was exiled from that nation in 2000 because of his opposition to President Vladimir Putin. Intel announced on December 2 that CEO Pat Gelsinger has resigned after a difficult stint at the company. The once-dominant chipmaker’s stock cratered as it missed the AI boom and was surpassed by most of its rivals. The liquor has long been marketed as a Russian vodka, but its production facilities have been in Latvia for several decades. Stoli Group is a unit of Luxembourg-based SPI Group, which owns other spirit and wine brands. “The Stoli Group has been targeted by the Russian Federation since it was formed nearly 25 years ago,” said Stoli Group CEO Chris Caldwell in a statement. “Earlier this year the company and our owner were both named by the Russian state as ‘extremist groups working against Russia’s interests.’” Its ongoing legal battle with the Russia government has forced Stoli to “spend dozens of millions of dollars on this long-term court battle across the globe with the Russian authorities,” according to its court filing. Caldwell also said that Stoli’s global operations has been a “victim of a malicious cyber attack” that has forced the company to operate “entirely manually while the systems are rebuilt.” A slowdown in demand for alcohol has crushed several company’s bottom lines following the pandemic when people were stuck at home and stocked up. Stoli’s filings said that it has seen a “decline and softening of demand for alcohol and spirits products post-Covid and especially beginning in 2023 and continuing into 2024.” Stoli Group USA, maker of Stoli vodka, has filed for bankruptcy due to slowing demand for spirits, a major cyberattack, and ongoing legal battles with Russia. NASSAU, Bahamas — Chaz Lanier made seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points — all in the first half — as No. 11 Tennessee cruised past No. 13 Baylor 77-62 on Friday night to win the Baha Mar Championship title. Lanier took the drama out of the game early, making five 3-pointers in the first four minutes to carry the Volunteers (6-0) to a 16-2 lead. His final 3 just before the halftime buzzer gave Tennessee a 47-20 advantage. Lanier finished 9 of 16 from the field and 7 of 10 from 3-point range and was named the tournament's MVP. Jordan Gainey added 16 points to Tennessee. Coming off a double-overtime victory over No. 22 St. John's on Jeremy Roach's buzzer-beater a night earlier, Baylor (4-2) outscored Tennessee 42-30 in the second half to make it respectable. Norchad Omier finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds and VJ Edgecombe scored 20 points for the Bears. Roach was held to eight points. Takeaways Tennessee: A night after a ragged first half had the Vols clinging to a one-point intermission advantage against Virginia, Tennessee came out firing and Baylor had no answer. Baylor: The Bears showed the effect of playing two overtimes Thursday night. This time, they couldn't mount an improbable comeback from a big first-half deficit. Key moment Lanier’s 15-point onslaught in the opening four minutes set the tone. Tennessee led 23-4 with 11:40 left in the half. Key stat Baylor went 6 of 22 (27.3%) from 3-point range. Tennessee went 12 of 27 (44.4%). Up next Tennessee hosts UT Martin on Wednesday. Baylor hosts New Orleans on Wednesday.

US to send $1.25 billion in weapons to Ukraine, pushing to get aid out before Biden leaves office WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the United States is expected to announce it will send another $1.25 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. It's part of a push by the Biden administration to get as much aid to Kyiv as possible before leaving office on Jan. 20. Officials say the large package of aid includes a significant amount of munitions, including for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems and the HAWK air defense system. It also will provide Stinger missiles and 155 mm- and 105 mm artillery rounds. The officials say they expect the announcement will be made on Monday. They spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in the president-elect’s political movement into public display. The argument previews fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — that is, wealthy members of the tech world who want more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. A 9th telecoms firm has been hit by a massive Chinese espionage campaign, the White House says WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official says a ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, a deputy national security adviser, said Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. Israeli troops burn northern Gaza hospital after forcibly removing staff and patients, officials say DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza's Health Ministry says Israeli troops have stormed one of the last hospitals operating in the territory's north on Friday and forced many of the staff and patients outside. Then they had to remove their clothes in winter weather. It was the latest assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital. Parts of it were set on fire. Staff say it has been hit multiple times in the past three months by Israeli troops waging an offensive against Hamas fighters in surrounding neighborhoods. Israel's military says Hamas uses the hospital as a base. It did not provide evidence, and hospital officials have denied it. Azerbaijani and U.S. officials suggest plane that crashed may have been hit by weapons fire U.S. and Azerbaijani officials have said weapons fire may have brought down an Azerbaijani airliner that crashed on Wednesday, killing 38 people. The statements from Rashad Nabiyev and White House national security spokesman John Kirby on Friday raised pressure on Russia. Officials in Moscow have said a drone attack was underway in the region that the Azerbaijan Airlines flight was destined for but have not addressed statements from aviation experts who blamed the crash on Russian air defenses responding to a Ukrainian attack. The plane was flying from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku to Chechnya on Wednesday when it crashed, killing 38 people and leaving all 29 survivors injured. Court rules Georgia lawmakers can subpoena Fani Willis for information related to her Trump case ATLANTA (AP) — A judge has ruled that the Georgia state Senate can subpoena Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. It's part of a inquiry into whether Willis has engaged in misconduct during her prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump. But Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shukura Ingram is giving Willis the chance to contest whether lawmakers’ demands are overly broad before Willis responds. A Republican-led committee was formed earlier this year and sent subpoenas to Willis in August seeking to compel her to testify during its September meeting and to produce scores of documents. Willis argued that the committee didn’t have the power to subpoena her. US homelessness up 18% as affordable housing remains out of reach for many people Federal officials say the United States saw an 18.1% increase in homelessness, a dramatic rise driven mostly by a lack of affordable housing as well as devastating natural disasters and a surge of migrants in several parts of the country. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said that federally required tallies taken across the country in January found that more than 770,000 people were counted as homeless. That increase comes on top of a 12% increase in 2023, which HUD blamed on soaring rents and the end of pandemic assistance. Among the most concerning trends was a nearly 40% rise in family homelessness. In states that ban abortion, social safety net programs often fail families MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee has a nearly total abortion ban and a porous safety net for mothers and young children. GOP state leaders in Tennessee and other states that banned abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 argue that they are bolstering services for families. Recent research and an analysis by The Associated Press has found that from the time a Tennessee woman gets pregnant, she faces greater obstacles to a healthy pregnancy, a healthy child and a financially stable family life than the average American mom. Donald Trump Jr’s friends worried about ‘social climbing’ new girlfriend: reportCall it Fox & Fiancées: Fox News' prime-time star Sean Hannity is engaged to "Fox & Friends" co-host Ainsley Earhardt. The "Hannity" host popped the question at their home church at Christmas, according to Fox News . The couple's children — he has two, she has one — "couldn't be happier" about the engagement, giving their parents their blessing and support, the cable news network said. "We are overjoyed and so thankful to our families for all of their love and support during this wonderful time in our lives," the Fox News hosts said. The spouses-to-be did not announce the engagement on their social media pages, but Earhardt marked the holiday with an Instagram carousel of Christmas photos that featured Hannity. "Merry Christmas. Happy Birthday, Jesus. 2024 has been a very special year. #christmas #merrychristmas," she wrote Wednesday. Although it's unclear exactly when Earhardt, 48, and Hannity, 62, began dating, the private couple said they bonded over their deep faith. They have reportedly been spotted together at social events since 2019. Vanity Fair first reported in 2020 that the pair — dubbed the "first couple of Fox" by the magazine — had been privately dating for months after arriving together by private helicopter for the wedding of then-"Fox & Friends" weekend host Pete Hegseth and producer Jennifer Rauchet at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. People then claimed that Earhardt and Hannity had been seeing each other "for years," but the speculation yielded denials from both TV personalities at the time, with the former announcing that she was not dating anyone and the latter asserting that he doesn't publicly discuss his personal life. Meanwhile, Earhardt is based in New York while Hannity lives in Florida as they carry out their long-term deals with Fox News Media. The couple said they maintain their long-distance relationship with weekend trips. Hannity, who also hosts the streaming Fox Nation show "Sean," joined the network when it debuted in 1996 and launched "Hannity & Colmes" with his liberal counterpart Alan Colmes, who left the show in 2008 after 12 years. Since then, the conservative political pundit has remained among the cable news network's top prime-time stars. Earhardt joined Fox News in 2007 and briefly hosted a segment on "Hannity." She began co-hosting "Fox & Friends" in 2016 and also hosts "Ainsley's Bible Study" on Fox Nation. This will be the second marriage for Hannity and the third for Earhardt. Hannity was wed to journalist Jill Rhodes for 26 years before they divorced in 2009. The former spouses share two adult children, Merri and Sean. Earhardt was previously married to Kevin McKinney from 2005 to 2009 and Clemson Tigers quarterback Will Proctor from 2012 to 2019. She and Proctor share a 9-year-old daughter , Hayden. Both Earhardt and Hannity say they "still get along well" with their exes and that they all support one another. "We actually made them aware this was happening ahead of time," they said. The couple, longtime defenders of President-elect Donald Trump, also received well wishes on Friday from him. "Great news about Sean and Ainsley. They are officially engaged to be married! There are no finer people than these, and there will be no finer couple. Congratulations to both - A deal made in HEAVEN!!!" he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit latimes.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

While homelessness across the United States increased by a dramatic 18% in 2024 compared to a year earlier, the Los Angeles region was among a handful of areas bucking the national trend — with a 5% drop in unsheltered homelessness over the same period, the first such drop in seven years, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development reported Friday. HUD’s 2024 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report: Part 1: Point-in-Time Estimates — an annual snapshot of the number of people in shelters, temporary housing or unsheltered settings — found more than 770,000 people nationwide were experiencing homelessness on a single night in January 2024, an 18% increase from 2023. According to HUD, the nationwide increase in homelessness in 2024 was tied to migration, displacement by natural disasters such as the Maui fire, and rising costs of housing. However, Los Angeles was among jurisdictions, including as Dallas and Chester County, Pennsylvania, marked by a decrease in people experiencing homelessness, HUD data found. Struggling with a high-cost rental market, Los Angeles increased the availability of housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, combining federal, state, county and city funds, according to the federal agency. “This crisis has been decades in the making, but after years of increases, we’ve turned the corner with the first decrease in street homelessness in years, by acting with innovative solutions that have resulted in thousands more people inside and more housing being built throughout the city,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. “There’s still more work to do and this urgent work will continue in 2025.” The Los Angeles region, meanwhile, remained at the top continuums of care in California with people experiencing homelessness — an overall 71,201 homeless individuals, consisting of both sheltered and unsheltered, according to HUD data. Moreover, California, the state with the country’s highest population, also led the U.S. in the number of homeless people, followed by New York, Washington, Florida and Massachusetts. The city and county of San Diego stood at 10,605, followed by San Jose/Santa Clara at 10,394; Oakland, Berkeley/Alameda County at 9,450; San Francisco at 8,323; and Santa Ana, Anaheim/Orange County at 7,322. Nationwide, family homelessness increased by 39% compared to 2023. The homelessness count was done during a period of significant increases in rental costs, as a result of the pandemic and nearly decades of under-building of housing, HUD said. The Maui fire, among other natural disasters, led to an increase in homelessness. In Hawaii, more than 5,200 people were sleeping in disaster emergency shelters on the night of the count. Meanwhile, veterans experiencing homelessness decreased nearly 8% nationwide from 35,574 in 2023 to 32,882 in 2024, according to HUD’s data. The figure for unsheltered veterans dropped nearly 11% — from 15,507 in 2023 to 13,851 in 2024. In the LA region, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s 2024 homelessness count showed a 22.9% decrease in veteran homelessness. Bass’ office cited several initiatives — in partnership with federal leaders — that led to this decline, such as boosting participation in a veteran housing voucher program, HUD-VASH and making changes policy changes regarding veterans’ benefits. “Los Angeles is one of the few communities in the country that saw a decrease in homelessness,” LAHSA CEO Va Lecia Adams Kellum said in a statement. “What’s happening in L.A. is working.” “Now is not the time to go backward,” she continued. “Our community must redouble its efforts in pursuing what we know works to bring all our unsheltered neighbors home.” According to the agency, its 2024 homelessness count found that majority, about 54%, of people who became homeless cited economic hardship as one of the main reasons they lost their home.

(("Leslie's", "we", "our", "its", or "Company", NASDAQ: LESL ), the largest and most trusted direct-to-consumer brand in the U.S. pool and spa care industry, today announced its financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal 2024. Jason McDonell, Chief Executive Officer, said, "Our fourth quarter results were in line with our revised expectations on the top-line, and we saw strong performance in our Pro segment with some continued softness in store traffic and larger-ticket and discretionary categories. Profitability was affected by deleverage from the sales decline and a one-time contract item, though we have remained disciplined on SG&A expenses." McDonell added, "While we continue to operate in a dynamic environment, which has been felt acutely across the pool industry for the last two years, I see a bright future and compelling opportunities for Leslie's. Since joining Leslie's in September, I've been in the market talking with customers, vendors, and associates and it's clear that Leslie's is a trusted brand with a rich legacy and a strong market leadership position. I see meaningful opportunities to enhance these attributes and build on our competitive advantages by putting the customer at the center of everything we do. With the customer as our north star, we are developing and beginning to execute on the strategy and initiatives to drive long-term profitable growth. I look forward to detailing our strategic roadmap in the coming quarters and thank all of our stakeholders for their support as we build a stronger future together." Fourth Quarter Highlights Sales were $397.9 million, a decrease of 8.0% compared to $432.4 million in the prior year period. Comparable sales decreased 8.3%. Non-comparable sales from acquisitions and new stores contributed $1.5 million in the period. Gross profit was $143.2 million, a decrease of 10.6% compared to $160.2 million in the prior year period. Gross margin was 36.0% compared to 37.0% in the prior year period. The decrease in gross margin rate was driven by deleverage on occupancy and distribution costs, as well as a one-time item of approximately $5 million related to rebates and warranties on a contract that has since been revised. Selling, general and administrative expenses ("SG&A") were $116.8 million, a decrease of 4.0% compared to $121.6 million in the prior year period. Operating income was $26.4 million compared to $38.5 million in the prior year period. Interest expense was $17.0 million compared to $17.2 million in the prior year period. A valuation allowance of approximately $11 million was established to provide an offset to the Company's deferred tax assets. This non-cash item is subject to change as the realization of future deferred tax assets changes over time. Net (loss) income was $(9.9) million compared to $16.5 million in the prior year period. Adjusted net income was $4.4 million compared to $25.7 million in the prior year period. Diluted earnings per share was $(0.05) compared to $0.09 in the prior year period. Adjusted diluted earnings per share was $0.02 compared to $0.14 in the prior year period. Adjusted EBITDA was $43.0 million compared to $59.5 million in the prior year period. The decrease was primarily driven by lower sales volume during the period. Decreases in product rate and occupancy deleverage were largely offset by lower SG&A and a reduction in inventory adjustments. Fiscal 2024 Highlights Sales decreased 8.3% to $1,330.1 million compared to $1,451.2 million in the prior year. Comparable sales decreased 8.8%. Non-comparable sales including acquisitions and new stores contributed $7.9 million for the year. Gross profit decreased 13.0% to $476.8 million compared to $548.2 million in the prior year. Gross margin decreased to 35.8% from 37.8% in the prior year period. The decrease in gross margin was primarily driven by negative impacts of 121 basis points from a decreased product rate, 94 basis points from deleverage on occupancy costs, and 50 basis points from the expensing of previously capitalized distribution costs due to significant reductions in inventory during the year. These impacts were partially offset by a 72 basis point reduction in inventory adjustments and distribution costs. SG&A decreased $26.4 million to $419.7 million compared to $446.0 million in the prior year. Operating income was $57.1 million compared to $102.2 million in the prior year. Interest expense increased $5.0 million to $70.4 million compared to $65.4 million in the prior year. Net (loss) income was $(23.4) million compared to $27.2 million in the prior year. Use of Non-GAAP Financial Measures and Other Operating Measures In addition to reporting financial results in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States ("GAAP"), we use certain non-GAAP financial measures and other operating measures, including comparable sales growth, Adjusted EBITDA, Adjusted net income (loss), and Adjusted diluted earnings per share, to evaluate the effectiveness of our business strategies, to make budgeting decisions, and to compare our performance against that of other peer companies using similar measures. These non-GAAP financial measures and other operating measures should not be considered in isolation or as substitutes for our results as reported under GAAP. In addition, these non-GAAP financial measures and other operating measures are not calculated in the same manner by all companies, and accordingly, are not necessarily comparable to similarly titled measures of other companies and may not be appropriate measures for performance relative to other companies. Comparable Sales Growth We measure comparable sales growth as the increase or decrease in sales recorded by the comparable base in any reporting period, compared to sales recorded by the comparable base in the prior reporting period. The comparable base includes sales through our locations and through our e-commerce websites and third-party marketplaces. Comparable sales growth is a key measure used by management and our board of directors to assess our financial performance. Adjusted EBITDA Adjusted EBITDA is defined as earnings before interest (including amortization of debt issuance costs), taxes, depreciation and amortization, management fees, equity-based compensation expense, loss (gain) on debt extinguishment, loss (gain) on asset and contract dispositions, executive transition costs, severance, costs related to equity offerings, strategic project costs, merger and acquisition costs, and other non-recurring, non-cash or discrete items. Adjusted EBITDA is a key measure used by management and our board of directors to assess our financial performance. Adjusted EBITDA is also frequently used by analysts, investors, and other interested parties to evaluate companies in our industry, when considered alongside other GAAP measures. We use Adjusted EBITDA to supplement GAAP measures of performance to evaluate the effectiveness of our business strategies, to make budgeting decisions, and to compare our performance against that of other companies using similar measures. Adjusted EBITDA is not a recognized measure of financial performance under GAAP but is used by some investors to determine a company's ability to service or incur indebtedness. Adjusted EBITDA is not calculated in the same manner by all companies, and accordingly, is not necessarily comparable to similarly titled measures of other companies and may not be an appropriate measure for performance relative to other companies. Adjusted EBITDA should not be construed as an indicator of a company's operating performance in isolation from, or as a substitute for, net income (loss), cash flows from operations or cash flow data, all of which are prepared in accordance with GAAP. We have presented Adjusted EBITDA solely as supplemental disclosure because we believe it allows for a more complete analysis of results of operations. Adjusted EBITDA is not intended to represent, and should not be considered more meaningful than, or as an alternative to, measures of operating performance as determined in accordance with GAAP. In the future, we may incur expenses or charges such as those added back to calculate Adjusted EBITDA. Our presentation of Adjusted EBITDA should not be construed as an inference that our future results will be unaffected by these items. Adjusted Net Income (Loss) and Adjusted Diluted Earnings per Share Adjusted net income (loss) and Adjusted diluted earnings per share are additional key measures used by management and our board of directors to assess our financial performance. Adjusted net income (loss) and Adjusted diluted earnings per share are also frequently used by analysts, investors, and other interested parties to evaluate companies in our industry, when considered alongside other GAAP measures. Adjusted net income (loss) is defined as net income (loss) adjusted to exclude management fees, equity-based compensation expense, loss (gain) on debt extinguishment, loss (gain) on asset and contract dispositions, executive transition costs, severance, costs related to equity offerings, strategic project costs, merger and acquisition costs, and other non-recurring, non-cash, or discrete items. Adjusted diluted earnings per share is defined as Adjusted net income (loss) divided by the diluted weighted average number of common shares outstanding. A bill to prohibit using foreign currencies for payments and transactions within Nigeria passed First Reading on the Red Chamber floor on Tuesday, reaffirming the Naira's dominance and restoring confidence in the currency. The bill was sponsored by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, who also serves as the head of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation and titled "A Bill for an Act to Alter the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, No. 7, to Prohibit the Use of Foreign Currencies for Remuneration and Other Related Matters." Additionally, it mandated that crude oil sales and other exports be sold only in the Naira denomination. If the Bill becomes law, it would outlaw the parallel market, or informal forex, which Senator Nwoko claimed threatened the legitimate economy . The new legislation would also promote economic independence, according to the MP who represents Delta North. Lottery tickets, scratch-offs or a few pull-tabs might seem like an easy solution, but a solution that should be thought deeply about as it could lead your loved one down a path to developing a gambling problem. Although pull-tabs and scratch-offs may seem fun to your child, it is important to remember that these gifts are not meant for those under the age of 21. “In fact, research has shown that early exposure to any form of gambling can lead to problem gambling later in life,” yourlifeiowa.org reported. By presenting the story in a straightforward chronological order, the filmmakers have created a more accessible and immersive experience for the audience. The linear narrative also lends a sense of urgency and inevitability to the unfolding events, drawing viewers deeper into the intricate world of crime, loyalty, and betrayal.

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) signed an agreement for collaborative effort to address agricultural drought in the Philippines. The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that was signed on December 16 at the PhilSA Office in Quezon City aims to create crop-specific drought maps from satellite data, with a focus on rice. PhilSA will leverage rice maps and field data from the DA-PhilRice to generate rice-specific drought maps, which will provide valuable insights for agricultural planning and resilience. The signing of the agreement allows efficient data sharing between the two agencies for enhanced drought mitigation. PhilSA Deputy Director General for Space Science and Technology Dr. Gay Jane P. Perez said in her message the momentous step was in the use of space data for addressing agricultural drought concerns that has been in development for over a decade. It started with the Drought and Crop Assessment and Forecasting project co-implemented by the University of the Philippines Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, and DA-Bureau of Soils and Water Management, and now being operationalized through PhilSA. “We are celebrating partnership. This collaboration with PhilRice underpins the importance of integrating satellite and ground data, emphasizing how ground data is used to validate, calibrate, and enhance the accuracy of satellite-derived insights and models,” Perez said. Dr. Eduardo Jimmy Quilang, OIC of the PhilRice Office of the Deputy Director for Research and Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM) project leader, stated the importance of this partnership with PhilSA for the agricultural sector’s benefit. “We cannot realize our goals, our dreams, our mission, our vision alone. Our research for development is heavily partnership-based. That’s why right now we are more than happy to sign our memorandum of agreement—sharing what we have and complementing what you are doing,” Quilang said. The agreement provides a platform to maximize the impact of PhilSA’s Satellite Mission Analysis, Planning, Product Enhancement and Development project, which aims to monitor, predict, and mitigate drought impacts on agriculture through space-based technologies. It also signifies further enhancement of the country’s resilience to the impacts of drought on agriculture. The MOA was signed by PhilRice Executive Director Dr. John De Leon and PhilSA Deputy Director General Denis Villorente (representing PhilSA Director General Joel Joseph S. Marciano Jr.). Perez and Director Ariel C. Blanco served as witnesses for PhilSA, while Quilang and PRiSM Assistant Unit Head Mary Rose Mabalay (representing PRiSM Unit Head Jovino De Dios) served as witnesses for PhilRice. PhilSA is the Philippines’ government agency addressing all national issues and activities related to space S&T applications. It was created under Republic Act 11363, or the Philippine Space Act. PhilRice is a government corporate entity under the Agriculture department created through Executive Order 1061 to develop high-yielding and cost-reducing technologies for rice.

(Announced shortly before election call.) — Increase the basic personal exemption on the Nova Scotia income tax to $11,744 from $8,744. — Increase minimum wage in 2025 to $16.50 per hour from $15.20 per hour. — Remove the tolls from the two Halifax harbour bridges at a cost to government coffers of $40 million. — Open a Halifax-based medical clinic to treat the symptoms of menopause, which would cost $4 million to set up and $2.4 million a year to operate. — Establish a 30-member provincial travel nurse team to help areas with nursing shortages, part of an estimated $5.3-million pilot program to begin at the end of 2024. — Reduce the minimum required down payment for first-time buyers on a home costing up to $500,000 to two per cent from five per cent under a loan program administered by local credit unions. — Launch a universal shingles vaccine program for people 65 and older. — Make parking free at all Nova Scotia hospitals and health-care centres at a cost of $8 million. — Impose a cap on electricity rate increases that will be based on the average of rate hikes across the country. — Reduce the small business tax rate to 1.5 per cent from 2.5 per cent; increase the small business tax threshold to $700,000 from $500,000. Liberals: — Cut harmonized sales tax by two points, to 13 per cent. (Announced in February) — Establish the position of ethics commissioner with order-making powers; give more resources to auditor general. — Grant order-making powers to the privacy commissioner so that rulings related to access to information requests and other privacy matters can be enforced. — Implement fine of $250,000 for any governing party that defies law on fixed election date. — Remove the provincial portion of the harmonized sales tax on all food that isn't already tax-free, such as snack foods, granola products, and rotisserie chickens, at a cost of $11 million annually. — Provide about $10 million in subsidies for independent grocers and food retailers in the form of grants and low-interest loans to help them expand and compete with big retailers. — Build 20 new collaborative care centres and expand services at 20 existing clinics to help tackle the province’s family doctor wait-list. — Offer a one-time $15,000 bonus to professionals such as pharmacists and therapists who commit to five years of service in the new collaborative care centres; double the existing incentive for doctors to $10,000 a year from $5,000. — Lower provincial income taxes by raising the basic personal exemption amount to $15,705. — Establish a public inquiry into illegal fishing; introduce a minimum fine for people caught buying illegally harvested lobster; create a dedicated fisheries enforcement unit and separate commercial fisheries office. — Build 80,000 new homes by 2032 to help alleviate housing shortage. — Replace the federal carbon price with an Atlantic region cap-and-trade model for large industrial greenhouse gas emitters. — Make public transit free across province. (Announced in September) — Promote flexible work arrangements to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. — Improve rent controls and close loopholes in the province's regulations for fixed-term leases. — Establish a provincial rent bank to provide zero-interest loans to renters who can't pay their bills. — Reduce immigration levels to align with provincial Labour Department targets. — Create a minister of women's health. — Provide the public access to free menstrual products at all provincial buildings. — Spend $300 million on local infrastructure and housing needs in Cape Breton. NDP: — Ban fixed-term rent leases and immediately slash the province’s rent cap in half to 2.5 per cent in order to prevent large annual rent increases. — Establish rent control and provide a tax credit for renters from low and middle-income households. — Prioritize the use of prefabricated housing to expand public housing stock. (Announced in May) — Increase loans to help with down payments on homes, to 10 per cent of purchase price (up from five per cent), for a maximum of $50,000; extend the repayment period to 25 years from 10 years. (Announced in May) — Reintroduce Coastal Protection Act to protect coastal areas, dunes and salt marshes, as well as to restrict development along parts of the 13,000-kilometre coastline at risk of heavy erosion. — Offer an affordable homes rebate that would help households with incomes of less than $70,000 save an average of $900 per year on rent or mortgage payments. — Create a compliance and enforcement unit for resolving tenant-landlord disputes. — Open 45 doctor clinics across the province to provide primary care at a cost of $60 million in the first year of the plan. — Remove the province’s portion of the harmonized sales tax from all groceries, cellphone and internet bills and for the purchase and installation of heat pumps. — Double the municipal finance grant to $30 million from $15 million in their first year of government. — Establish a rent-to-own home program for Nova Scotians who earn less than $100,000 annually, with about 500 new homes built in the first year by using prefabricated construction. Big Ten Signing Day: Oregon’s class ahead of Ohio State, Michigan in rankingsMeghan Markle is reportedly set to return to the spotlight with her TV show and the launch of her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. Before marrying Prince Harry , Meghan played the part of Rachel Zane for seven seasons of Suits. She also appeared in Castle, CSI: Miami, The League, Fringe, and Horrible Bosses. In recent years, she took part in a tell-all documentary called Harry & Meghan as well as Live to Lead and Heart of Invictus. And now, it has been reported that she will be launching her Netflix show about "cooking, gardening and entertaining" in "early 2025". She will also launch her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. Her brand, which was announced in March, was previously promoted when she sent baskets of homemade jams to Kris Jenner, Chrissy Teigen and Abigail Spencer. “As far as Meghan being quiet, she’s been in the background working on her entrepreneurial efforts,” an industry source claimed. "Both the Netflix project and her brand will come out within the same timeline in the New Year.” Page Six reported that she filmed the show around California and at the home of Tom and Sherrie Cipolla, philanthropists who are fixtures on the Montecito society scene. The Mirror have reached out to Meghan's reps for comment. It comes after it was reported that Meghan suffered another blow as she tried to get her eagerly-awaited lifestyle brand up and running. Despite the initial announcement, her wares have been shared only with celebrity friends, who showcased her American Riviera Orchard jam on social media in April. So far, products have not been available yet to buy on the site and last month, it emerged her application to have her brand trademark had been rejected. She was then given three months to respond to the "nonfinal officer action" issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). She has been warned that failure to do so could result in her application being abandoned. Last month, it was reveaed that Meghan's brand had encountered another stumbling block as a protest against trademarking the brand had been lodged with the USPTO by the owners of the 'Royal Riviera' trademark - Harry & David, a US-based premium food and gifts retailer. Dow futures gain 300 points Monday following Trump's pick of Bessent for Treasury: Live updates

Climate finance's 'new era' shows new political realitiesU.S. stock futures climbed Monday as Wall Street kicked off a shortened Thanksgiving trading week. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 302 points, or 0.7%. Futures tied to the S&P 500 climbed 0.5%, and Nasdaq-100 futures advanced around 0.6%. Wall Street is coming off a winning week as the postelection rally picked up again. The 30-stock Dow advanced around 2% last week and posted a record close on Friday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each rose about 1.7%. The small-cap Russell 2000 jumped roughly 4.5% during the week. President-elect Donald Trump signaled his intention to nominate Key Square Group founder Scott Bessent as Treasury secretary. Investors viewed the pick favorably and see the hedge fund manager as someone who will be supportive of the equity market and who may help mitigate some of Trump's most extreme protectionist policies. "I would recommend that tariffs be layered in gradually, "said Bessent to CNBC in an interview earlier this month before he was picked. "If you take that price adjustment coupled with all the other disinflationary things President Trump is talking about, we're going to be at or below the 2% inflation target again." Treasury yields pulled back slightly, and the U.S. dollar index decreased following the Bessent pick late Friday. "Supporters will argue that Mr. Bessent's career as a macro investor will provide him with an ability to understand the knock-on effects of President Trump's trade, tariff, tax, and deregulatory agenda," said Ed Mills, Raymond James Washington policy analyst, in a note to clients. "If Mr. Bessent can delay or limit an across-the-board tariff policy, while extending tax cuts, pushing deregulation (that increases energy production), all support U.S.-based industries — all supporting U.S. GDP growth — that would be cheered on by the market." U.S. markets are closed Thursday due to the Thanksgiving holiday and close early on Friday so trading volume is likely to be light this week. Despite this week's shortened trading week, the interest rate outlook is back in focus with the release of October's personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure, on Wednesday. Minutes from the Fed's most recent policy meeting are also due out ahead of Thanksgiving. On the corporate earnings front, several retailers and tech names are slated to release quarterly results during the week. Bath and Body Works is scheduled to announce its earnings Monday morning. On Tuesday, retailers Macy's, Nordstrom and Best Buy are reporting results, as well as tech companies CrowdStrike and Dell Technologies. MicroStrategy shares popped 7% in the premarket after a big price target increase from Bernstein. The firm cited the company's huge Bitcoin holdings as a catalyst for the updated forecast. "We believe, Bitcoin is in a structural bull market with conducive regulation and U.S government support, institutional adoption and favorable macro (low rates, inflation risk and record fiscal debt)," the firm said . "MSTR's debt is long term, unsecured convertible, implying negligible risk to balance sheet liquidity from Bitcoin volatility." — Sean Conlon European markets opened higher Monday, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index adding around 0.5% shortly after trading began. Sectors broadly traded higher as household goods and autos stocks led gains, both adding around 1.3%. Healthcare and retail stocks, meanwhile, were the only sectors to pull back, dipping by around 0.2% and 0.1% respectively. Regional bourses were higher, with France's CAC 40 adding close to 1%, Germany's DAX rising 0.7% and the U.K.'s FTSE 100 climbing 0.4%. — Sophie Kiderlin Asia-Pacific markets mostly rose Monday, with Australia's S&P/ASX 200 hitting fresh highs. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.28% to close at 8,417.6, hitting a new all-time closing high. The index also reached a new intraday high of 8,462.1 during the trading session. On Monday, Singapore released its inflation figures for October. The country's headline inflation rate fell to 1.4%, the lowest rate of inflation since March 2021. Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 1.3% up, ending at 38,780.14, while the broad-based Topix rose 0.71% to 2,715.6. In contrast, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.3% in its last hour of trade, while mainland China's CSI 300 was down 0.46% to close at 3,848.09. — Lim Hui Jie The dollar index declined 0.6% to 106.92 on Sunday. This marks a slight pullback from the index's 0.8% gain last week, during which it hit a one-year high. The greenback also strengthened to its highest level since July against the yen last week. The dollar was last down 0.1% versus the yen at 154.17. — Hakyung Kim U.S. stock futures started trading in the green Sunday night. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures added 150 points, or 0.4%. Investors may view the pick favorably and see the hedge fund manager as someone who will be supportive of the equity market. To be sure, Trump stated that Bessent would help him implement protectionist trade policies, which some investors fear will hurt the market. "U.S. equities, the dollar and Treasury yields have all risen sharply in response to better-than-expected U.S. economic data and have received an additional boost from the election outcome," said MRB Partners global strategist Phillip Colmar. "However," he added, "investors should be careful not to be dogmatic in their views and positioning since the policies proposed by President-elect Trump are a conflicting mix of pro-growth fiscal stimulus and stagflationary isolationism." Joe Biden is taking last-minute measures to support Ukraine before leaving things to Donald Trump. He finally let Ukraine use US missiles to strike inside Russia and approved anti-personnel mines. The measures are late in his term but could give Ukraine a much-needed boost. President Joe Biden has been scrambling to get Ukraine help ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House, pushing through a range of last-minute measures. Over a period of only days, the US has given Ukraine new options for strikes into Russia, new controversial weapons, and increased financial support. These moves appear aimed at changing the war before Trump — who seems to want most to end the conflict as soon as possible — takes office. Biden, whose administration has sent billions of dollars in weaponry to Ukraine, recently lifted long-held restrictions on Kyiv's use of American-made longer-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia. It marked a significant policy shift for the US. Ukraine launched its first cross-border strike with the American-made Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, on Tuesday, causing a fire at a military facility in Russia's western Bryansk region. It followed that strike with a volley of British-made Storm Shadow missiles the next day. With just two months to go before the end of his term, Biden has also sought to rush additional aid to Ukraine. Over $6 billion in US security assistance to Kyiv remained from April's foreign aid package at the start of the month. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said just last week that Biden "has committed to making sure that every dollar we have at our disposal will be pushed out the door" before Trump's inauguration on January 20. The Biden administration announced on Wednesday a new roughly $275 million military aid package that included the provision of anti-personnel land mines, controversial weapons banned in many countries due to the risks of civilian harm. And during a press briefing that same day, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the Biden administration moved to forgive about $4.7 billion in US loans to Ukraine. War analysts told Business Insider that this US push could give Ukraine a much-needed battlefield boost and strengthen Kyiv's defensive position, but it was needed earlier. "Every decision's been too late," Mick Ryan, a retired Australian Army major general and strategist, told BI. "They've been too terrified of escalation." Related stories Delayed measures The latest measures follow a pattern of behavior in this war for the Biden administration, which has often met Ukraine's calls for help with too little, too late. Examples include Abrams tanks, F-16 fighter jets, and long-range missiles. "Had self-imposed restrictions been lifted sooner, Ukraine would have made greater advances against the Russians," Mark Temnycky, a nonresident fellow with the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center, explained to BI, arguing that delays cost Ukraine battlefield momentum. Ukrainian forces face a dire situation as they struggle to hold captured territory inside Russia's Kursk region and prevent further losses in eastern Ukraine, where Russia is pressing on key strongholds. Extra support is greatly needed. The removal of restrictions on ATACMS creates new strike opportunities, but anti-personnel land mines could be particularly impactful, Ben Friedman, the policy director at Defense Priorities, said, telling BI "it's not too late" to make a difference. Ukrainian officials, including President Zelenskyy, have repeatedly pressed the West to lift the ban on using Western missiles to strike Russia, arguing that the restrictions have hamstrung Kyiv's ability to fight effectively. Ryan, the retired Australian major general, said there's no "silver bullet" in this war. The ATACMS decision could have some battlefield impact depending on how the missiles are used, but the effect likely won't be significant. The missiles are, instead, part of a growing arsenal of weapons that Ukraine can now use to strike key military targets inside Russia , including Western-made cruise missiles and domestically produced long-range attack drones. Ryan said that the anti-personnel landmines could be a useful addition to Ukraine's defensive network, which includes sensors, drones, artillery, trenches, and deceptive practices. In particular, they could slow Russian advances, threatening dismounted infantry. These measures could be critical as Kyiv looks to slow down Russian advances in the eastern regions . "The Ukrainians really need to stem this loss of territory, to slow down — if not stop — the Russian advances in the east," he said. A new administration is looming Trump, a frequent critic and skeptic of the value of substantial US military aid to Ukraine, has repeatedly said he would end the war, though he hasn't presented a concrete plan for doing so. The rough idea seems to be negotiation. During a speech at an election night event at his resort in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, Trump actually said he would stop all wars. He won't take over the White House until January 20, but his associates have reportedly laid out ideas on how to end the conflict in Ukraine — one of which would involve creating an 800-mile demilitarized zone. Vice President-elect JD Vance discussed a similar idea in an interview with the "Shawn Ryan Show" in September. Abishur Prakash, the founder of The Geopolitical Business, a strategy advisory firm in Toronto, Canada, said Ukraine's long-range strikes inside Russia may have thrown a wrench into Trump's reported plans to bring Putin to the negotiating table and freeze the conflict. "Based on how Russia is responding, the war may be more 'on fire' by Inauguration Day," he told BI. In response to the use of American and British missiles against Russia, the Russian military on Thursday struck the Ukrainian city of Dnipro with what Kyiv thought was an intercontinental ballistic missile but turned out to be an experimental new system . Prakash said that considering the latest measures, Biden will leave office with Ukraine in a stronger position than it was in just a few months ago, with deep-strike capabilities, landmines, and potential approval for more kinds of weapons. "He doesn't want his legacy to be stained by the war in Europe," he said of Biden, adding that these steps are "also about leaving Ukraine in a stronger standing than when the war began."A new phishing scam targets Facebook business users with fake emails from Meta, claiming prohibited content on pages. Know how to keep your page safe. There are several startup businesses, small businesses and pages which rely on Facebook for marketing and promotion. If your business relies on Facebook for promotion, then know Kaspersky experts have uncovered a new phishing scam targeting businesses that use Meta for Business, Facebook’s platform for managing business pages. Scammers are sending emails pretending to be from Facebook’s Meta for Business team. The email claims that your business page contains prohibited content, and as a result, your account and page have been blocked. To resolve the issue, the email urges you to provide explanations or take action via a provided link. What the attackers really want is access to your business account. By tricking you into interacting with a fraudulent page, they hope to steal your login credentials and potentially gain control of your account. Why This Scam Is Different According to Kaspersky’s anonymized data, these phishing emails began circulating on December 14. Complaints have been reported globally, including in the Asia-Pacific region. A closer look at the “From” field in the email reveals that the domain doesn’t belong to Facebook. Scammers are using various unrelated domains to send these messages. Plus, the email link takes you to Facebook Messenger, where a fake account poses as Facebook’s support team. The setup looks convincing, which adds to the scam’s credibility. This phishing campaign stands out because, unlike earlier scams that accused users of copyright violations via email, this one mimics internal communication on Facebook’s platform itself. By using Facebook Messenger, the attackers create a false sense of trust. It’s easy for stressed users to miss subtle warnings, such as the account being labelled as a fan page instead of an official support account. “If you receive such an email, verify its authenticity before taking any action. Avoid clicking on suspicious links, and report the incident to Facebook’s support team immediately. Activating two-factor authentication and updating compromised passwords are critical steps to protect your account,” Andrey Kovtun, Email Threats Protection Group Manager at Kaspersky recommends. 10-man Barcelona concedes two late goals in draw at Celta VigoATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who tried to restore virtue to the White House after the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, then rebounded from a landslide defeat to become a global advocate of human rights and democracy, has died. He was 100 years old . The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday afternoon, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. The center said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. A moderate Democrat, Carter ran for president in 1976 as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said. Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. His achievements included brokering Mideast peace by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David for 13 days in 1978. But his coalition splintered under double-digit inflation and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His negotiations ultimately brought all the hostages home alive, but in a final insult, Iran didn’t release them until the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, who had trounced him in the 1980 election. Humbled and back home in Georgia, Carter said his faith demanded that he keep doing whatever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. He and Rosalynn co-founded The Carter Center in 1982 and spent the next 40 years traveling the world as peacemakers, human rights advocates and champions of democracy and public health. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter helped ease nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiate cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, the center had monitored at least 113 elections around the world. Carter was determined to eradicate guinea worm infections as one of many health initiatives. Swinging hammers into their 90s, the Carters built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The common observation that he was better as an ex-president rankled Carter. His allies were pleased that he lived long enough to see biographers and historians revisit his presidency and declare it more impactful than many understood at the time. Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing. The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief" and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats. But Carter set the stage for an economic revival and sharply reduced America's dependence on foreign oil by deregulating the energy industry along with airlines, trains and trucking. He established the departments of Energy and Education, appointed record numbers of women and nonwhites to federal posts, preserved millions of acres of Alaskan wilderness and pardoned most Vietnam draft evaders. Emphasizing human rights , he ended most support for military dictators and took on bribery by multinational corporations by signing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He persuaded the Senate to ratify the Panama Canal treaties and normalized relations with China, an outgrowth of Nixon’s outreach to Beijing. But crippling turns in foreign affairs took their toll. When OPEC hiked crude prices, making drivers line up for gasoline as inflation spiked to 11%, Carter tried to encourage Americans to overcome “a crisis of confidence.” Many voters lost confidence in Carter instead after the infamous address that media dubbed his “malaise" speech, even though he never used that word. After Carter reluctantly agreed to admit the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979. Negotiations to quickly free the hostages broke down, and then eight Americans died when a top-secret military rescue attempt failed. Carter also had to reverse course on the SALT II nuclear arms treaty after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Though historians would later credit Carter's diplomatic efforts for hastening the end of the Cold war, Republicans labeled his soft power weak. Reagan’s “make America great again” appeals resonated, and he beat Carter in all but six states. Born Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. married fellow Plains native Rosalynn Smith in 1946, the year he graduated from the Naval Academy. He brought his young family back to Plains after his father died, abandoning his Navy career, and they soon turned their ambitions to politics . Carter reached the state Senate in 1962. After rural white and Black voters elected him governor in 1970, he drew national attention by declaring that “the time for racial discrimination is over.” Carter published more than 30 books and remained influential as his center turned its democracy advocacy onto U.S. politics, monitoring an audit of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results. After a 2015 cancer diagnosis, Carter said he felt “perfectly at ease with whatever comes.” “I’ve had a wonderful life,” he said. “I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.” Contributors include former AP staffer Alex Sanz in Atlanta.Flood warnings were issued after heavy rainfall and melting snow caused river levels to rise rapidly in West Yorkshire, as Storm Bert swept across the region. Twelve warnings were in place along the River Calder around Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, where sirens sounded on Saturday afternoon River levels there peaked at about 16:00 GMT, according to the Environment Agency, with people advised to consider moving household valuables upstairs. A yellow weather warning for rain is in place for parts of West and South Yorkshire until 07:00 on Sunday, with the wintry weather causing travel disruption and leaving around 1,500 homes without power earlier. River levels at Todmorden and Hebden Bridge had exceeded 2.4m (7.9ft) by 17:00 on Saturday, according to the Environment Agency website. At Mytholmroyd, the river level exceeded 4.3m. The agency said flooding of properties was possible at over 4.4m. The Environment Agency said: “Our focus of attention is the Calder Valley, where flood warnings have been issued and sirens sounded. "Minor impacts are possible more widely across Yorkshire, which may continue in places until Tuesday. The overall flood risk is low. "Teams are out on the ground, clearing grids and checking flood defence assets to ensure they're ready to respond if needed." The agency added: "Consider taking appropriate steps to prepare for possible flooding, such as moving things upstairs and getting flood protection equipment ready to put in place." The A646 was closed in both directions from Shaw Wood Road in Todmorden to Church Lane in Hebden Bridge. Calderdale Council said Centre Vale Park, in Todmorden, was closed to allow flood gates to open to help manage river levels. People were advised to avoid the area. Many pubs and businesses were shut in Hebden Bridge due to the risk of flooding. Hebden Bridge Flood Action Group said the Town Hall was open to anyone who found themselves stranded and needed a place to be warm and dry. Josh Fenton-Glynn, the MP for Calder Valley, was in Hebden Bridge to speak to residents. He said: "We have seen some flooding but we're not as bad as 2020 or 2015. Hopefully if people are sensible and stay at home we'll be OK." Earlier in the day, heavy snowfall caused difficulties for motorists. On the M1, one lane was closed northbound between Junction 38 for Huddersfield and junction 39 for Wakefield, with images on social media showing a HGV, which appeared to have slid down an embankment towards the motorway. West Yorkshire Police said the lorry driver was uninjured and the road reopened at 10:15 after the vehicle was removed. Meanwhile, Northern Powergrid said about 1,500 properties had lost power across North and West Yorkshire. The company said it had been "restoring power as quickly as we can" to those affected. The runway was shut at Leeds Bradford Airport earlier. Several flights were heavily delayed, while passengers travelling to Warsaw and Belfast saw their flights cancelled. Some arrivals were diverted to other airports. Train operator Northern was also affected. In sport, Bradford City's match against Accrington Stanley and Halifax Town's clash with Sutton United were postponed. Scarborough Athletic's game against Kidderminster Harriers was also called off. "Particularly exposed parts" of the East Yorkshire coastline between Bridlington and Barmston were covered by another flood alert. Drivers and pedestrians in those areas were advised to take care.

By Burnett Munthali Malawi is currently facing several interwoven challenges: Firstly, the country’s economy is teetering under the weight of rising inflation, a depreciating currency, and skyrocketing commodity prices. The cost of living has become unbearable for many, with basic necessities slipping out of reach for ordinary Malawians. Secondly, allegations of corruption continue to erode public trust. High-profile scandals and perceived inaction against corrupt officials have fueled frustration among citizens, raising questions about the government’s commitment to accountability. Sadly, the dissatisfaction has spilled into the streets, with protests becoming a common occurrence. Citizens are demanding better services, transparent governance, and meaningful economic reforms. Fourthly, the ruling Tonse Alliance if not the lonely ruling MCP is under strain, with internal divisions and opposition parties gaining momentum as they capitalize on the public’s discontent. The government’s handling of these crises will determine its credibility moving forward. To regain control, it must address key areas: Bold economic policies aimed at stabilizing the economy and supporting vulnerable populations are urgently needed. Stimulus packages, subsidies for essential goods, and policies to attract foreign investment could offer some relief. Malawi is experiencing a severe fuel crisis that has been there for weeks, yet the President, Pastor Lazarus Chakwera, continues to focus on pageantry and empty platitudes. This fuel crisis stems from a shortage of foreign exchange, a consequence of a failing economy driven by... pic.twitter.com/7A6J9m5qvL Swift and decisive action against corruption will be critical. High-profile prosecutions and institutional reforms could help rebuild trust in governance. The government must engage the public openly, acknowledging the challenges while outlining clear, actionable solutions. Citizens need reassurance that their leaders are both aware of their plight and actively working to address it. Failure to respond effectively risks plunging Malawi into deeper turmoil. Public frustration could escalate, leading to widespread unrest and a further erosion of government legitimacy. Political opponents, sensing weakness, may intensify their efforts to discredit the administration, potentially destabilizing the political landscape further. In conclusion, the crises confronting Malawi are daunting, but they also present an opportunity for the government to prove its mettle. Leadership is not about avoiding challenges but navigating through them with vision, decisiveness, and integrity. As analysts have pointed out, the coming months will test whether the government can rise to the occasion or risk losing its grip on the nation’s future. San Francisco Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie taps OpenAI's Sam Altman and other business leaders for help with transition

Democrats plan to elect new party leader just days after Trump's inaugurationA US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer looks on during an operation. Gregory Bull/AP A growing number of law enforcement authorities and Democratic leaders across the country are speaking out about their plans to thwart one of President-elect Donald Trump’s top immigration priorities: Mass deportation . Taking lessons from the first four years of the Trump era, many have vowed to stand their ground and refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement in arresting undocumented immigrants. They are also preparing counter-lawsuits to have ready to take the incoming administration to court as soon as officials attempt to begin deportations, which they’ve promised to kick off on day one. In interviews with Politico published Saturday, prosecutors in six Democratic-led states described their plans to pursue legal challenges against actions Trump may take to carry out his immigration agenda. These include the potential deployment of the US military domestically to find undocumented people, violations of immigrants’ rights to due process, the withholding of funds from s0-called sanctuary cities, and attempts to deputize the National Guard from red states to carry out arrests and detentions in blue ones. These prosecutors said they’re also preparing to fight scenarios where the administration tries to send immigration agents into schools and hospitals, or where they withhold federal funds from local law enforcement to force them into compliance with deportation plans. Earlier this week, Trump reaffirmed his plans to declare a national emergency in order to use federal troops to round-up targets for deportation. “If he’s going to want to achieve that type of scale, the largest deportation in US history, as he says, by definition he’s going to have to target people who are lawfully here and ... go after American citizens,” Matthew Platkin, New Jersey’s attorney general told Politico , likely referring to the fact that millions of undocumented people live with US citizens, including those whose children were born on American soil. Those children would have to leave the country with deported parents in order for families to stay together . “We’re not going to stand for that,” Platkin added. The goal of top prosecutors across blue states, the president of the Democratic Attorneys General Association Sean Rankin told ABC News , is to put up a “unified front” against Trump’s immigration agenda. The Trump administration will inevitably face not only legal but logistical obstacles if they attempt to deliver on the promise of conducting an unprecedented mass deportation campaign. As Dara Lind with the American Immigration Council recently wrote in the New York Times , deporting one million undocumented immigrants per year—a fraction of the estimated 11 million living in the country—would cost an annual $88 billion. The limited number of detention beds and immigration courts’ years-long backlog will also inhibit a massive crackdown. Still, Tom Homan, Trump’s new “border czar,” who won’t require Senate confirmation, has indicated the administration will push hard against jurisdictions that get in their way. “If we can’t get assistance from New York City,” Homan told Fox News recently, “we may have to double the number of agents we send to New York City. Because we’re going to do the job. We’re going to do the job without you or with you.” And in fact, Homan has a history of pushing forward extreme immigration policies: As a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official during Trump’s first term, he was the architect of the “zero tolerance” policy that separated thousands of parents from their children at the border. To this day, many have not been reunited. Several Democratic leaders have publicly said they won’t go along with mass deportation efforts. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, who sued the Trump administration 100 times as attorney general, said they would use “every tool in the toolbox” to protect the state’s population. In a statement , a spokesperson for the Rhode Island State Police said while they cooperate with ICE, “they are not immigration officers and will not expend any time and resources to support mass deportation efforts.” Top prosecutors in states like Massachusetts are also trying to dispel the unsupported claims, repeatedly reinforced by Trump, that immigrants are more prone to committing crimes. Instead, according to Politico ‘s reporting, they hope to make the case that mass deportation would be bad for the US economy. As I’ve previously reported , the mass deportation of undocumented workers would drastically reduce the GDP, make inflation rise, and even result in fewer jobs available for American citizens.

Mumbai: The cases of sudden heart attacks have spiked in the country as many cases are coming to the fore in the recent past, especially post COVID-19 pandemic. Another incident of sudden heart attack has come to the fore where an elderly passenger suffered heart attack while traveling in a train. The TTE present inside the train reacted quickly and gave timely CPR to the patient due to which his life was saved. A video of the TTE giving CPR to the patient and blowing air into his mouth has gone viral on social media. The incident reportedly occurred in train number 15708 Amrapali Express as a passenger traveling in the general coach suffered sudden heart attack, after which the TTE came to the rescue of the 70-year-old passenger. The passenger was administered with CPR due to which the passenger got a new lease of life. The passenger was then sent to a hospital at Chhapra Railway Station for further treatment. The video of the incident is going viral on social media and the internet users are slamming the TTE even after his heroic act of saving the life of the elderly passenger. The internet users are commenting on the video which was shared by the Railway Ministry on its official social media account, saying that CPR is not given to a person if he is conscious. Let us know! 👂 What type of content would you like to see from us this year? The video shows that the TTE is pumping the patient's chest with his hands and also blows air into the mouth of the elderly patient while the patient is looking at him. The patient seems to be conscious, however, the patient is also in need of urgent medical attention as he allegedly suffered in moving train. The Railway Minitry shared the video and said, "TTE's promptness gave 'life'. While travelling in the general coach of train number 15708 'Amrapali Express', a 70-year-old passenger suffered a heart attack. The TTE deployed there immediately gave CPR and saved the life of the passenger. The passenger was then sent to the hospital at Chhapra railway station." A user said, "The patient is conscious and has raised his hands but the TTE is giving him CPR and giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing. What kind of CPR is this?" Another user said, "It is seen in the video that the person's hands are moving which means that his heartbeat is present. Wrong CPR has been given. The patient is inspected before giving basic life support. More training and awareness is needed among the people."The AICTE IDEA Lab of St. Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) and the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Mangaluru, will organise a three-day workshop on ATL Curriculum and Internet of Things (IoT) for Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) school teachers and students from Dakshina Kannada from November 25 to 27. Trump’s Treasury Pick Wants Shadow Fed Chair, Maybe Weak DollarAs most retirees are aware, their reason Social Security benefits are eligible for an automatic cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) each year. This is to help them keep up with inflation and maintain purchasing power, but one thing COLAs are not meant to do is actually increase benefits. This is one of the main reasons why experts counsel beneficiaries not to depend solely on benefits for their retirement needs. Benefits were never expected to replace a salary, just around 40% of the amount necessary to cover expenses. Despite this, many retirees rely on their Social Security check to make ends meet, and, after this year’s 2.5% rise, many are struggling to see how they will make ends meet come the new year. The impact of a low COLA on retirees Social Security benefits For those that rely on some form on Social Security , the increase helps them with expenses, such as Medicare. When we look at the average monthly Social Security benefit in 2024, and we add the 2,5% COLA, we go from $1,927 to $1,976 in 2025. This is only a $49 increase, which, when we take into account the Medicare Part B increase that has already been announced (the standard monthly premium for Part B is $174.70, but in 2025, it’s going up to $185) will leave beneficiaries with just $39 dollars a month extra to cover expenses. This does not mean every beneficiary will receive the same increase, those who have higher checks will get more, and those with a lower benefit will get less. Some beneficiaries are not even eligible for Medicare, so this particular scenario will not apply to them, as Social Security eligibility begins as early as age 62, whereas Medicare eligibility doesn’t start until age 65. Regardless of the increase and the services you are signed up for, the 2,5% increase will hardly be enough for most people to cover the increase in expenses they have suffered in 2024, when inflation surpassed the COLA in the first half of the year, let alone make up for some of the savings they used up to cover the difference in their expected expenses. How to make up for a minimal increase When you are a regular worker it is easy to say, well just get a higher salary or a different job that pays better, or, just move, but as seniors this can be a bit more complicated. The principles of the matter still apply and, although it can be hard to make some lifestyle adjustments, the better economic position may be worth the sacrifice. Since benefits are dependent on your record and not your address, moving to a less expensive part of the country is the best way to increase your disposable income without that much effort. Leaving friends and family behind can be hard, but the earlier you get established the better, as you can build a support network to depend on should you need to. This has the added benefit of giving you extra income from the sale of a house in a higher cost of living area or passive income from its rental. In fact, you can sell and downsize or rent your house even if you are staying in your own city. It may be tempting to keep the house, but consider how much of your income is going to maintaining it and other options around you that may suit your lifestyle better. Plus, a smaller house is easier to clean, heat and cool. As a last resort, if you are fit enough, consider returning to a workforce with part time jobs that allow flexibility. It does not have to be a high pressure job, or even in your field, but it would give extra income as well as some contact with other people that may stave off isolation.By KELVIN CHAN LONDON (AP) — After a sprawling hacking campaign exposed the communications of an unknown number of Americans, U.S. cybersecurity officials are advising people to use encryption in their communications. To safeguard against the risks highlighted by the campaign, which originated in China, federal cybersecurity authorities released an extensive list of security recommendations for U.S. telecom companies — such as Verizon and AT&T — that were targeted. The advice includes one tip we can all put into practice with our phones: “Ensure that traffic is end-to-end encrypted to the maximum extent possible.” End-to-end encryption, also known as E2EE, means that messages are scrambled so that only the sender and recipient can see them. If anyone else intercepts the message, all they will see is a garble that can’t be unscrambled without the key. Law enforcement officials had until now resisted this type of encryption because it means the technology companies themselves won’t be able to look at the messages, nor respond to law enforcement requests to turn the data over. Here’s a look at various ways ordinary consumers can use end-to-end encryption: Officials said the hackers targeted the metadata of a large number of customers, including information on the dates, times and recipients of calls and texts. They also managed to see the content from texts from a much smaller number of victims. If you’re an iPhone user, information in text messages that you send to someone else who also has an iPhone will be encrypted end-to-end. Just look for the blue text bubbles, which indicate that they are encrypted iMessages. The same goes for Android users sending texts through Google Messages. There will be a lock next to the timestamp on each message to indicate the encryption is on. But there’s a weakness. When iPhone and Android users text each other, the messages are encrypted only using Rich Communication Services, an industry standard for instant messaging that replaces the older SMS and MMS standards. Apple has noted that RCS messages “aren’t end-to-end encrypted, which means they’re not protected from a third party reading them while they’re sent between devices.” Samsung, which sells Android smartphones, has also hinted at the issue in a footnote at the bottom of a press release last month on RCS, saying, “Encryption only available for Android to Android communication.” To avoid getting caught out when trading texts, experts recommend using encrypted messaging apps. Privacy advocates are big fans of Signal, which applies end-to-end encryption on all messages and voice calls. The independent nonprofit group behind the app promises never to sell, rent, or lease customer data and has made its source code publicly available so that it can be audited by anyone to examine it “for security and correctness.” Signal’s encryption protocol is so reputable that it has been integrated into rival WhatsApp , so users will enjoy the same level of security protection as Signal, which has a much smaller user base. End-to-end encryption is also the default mode for Facebook Messenger , which like WhatsApp is owned by Meta Platforms. Telegram is an app that can be used for one-on-one conversations, group chats and broadcast “channels” but contrary to popular perception, it doesn’t turn on end-to-end encryption by default. Users have to switch on the option. And it doesn’t work with group chats. Cybersecurity experts have warned people against using Telegram for private communications and pointed out that only its opt-in ‘secret chat’ feature is encrypted from end-to-end. The app also has a reputation for being a haven for scammers and criminal activity, highlighted by founder and CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest in France . Instead of using your phone to make calls through a wireless cellular network, you can make voice calls with Signal and WhatsApp. Both apps encrypt calls with the same technology that they use to encrypt messages. There are other options. If you have an iPhone you can use Facetime for calls, while Android owners can use the Google Fi service, which are both end-to-end encrypted. The only catch with all these options is that, as with using the chat services to send messages, the person on the other end will also have to have the app installed. WhatsApp and Signal users can customize their privacy preferences in the settings, including hiding IP address during calls to prevent your general location from being guessed. One more week left in the 2024 regular season and the playoff picture (and first pick in the draft picture) is coming into shape. Nate Tice and Charles McDonald discuss the five biggest results from Week 17's Saturday and Sunday action, leading off with the Minnesota Vikings' well-earned divisional win over the Green Bay Packers. Nate & Charles discuss how Sam Darnold's play and Kevin O'Connor's scheming always kept Green Bay a step behind and why the Packers defense is not quite up to the task of stopping an elite Super Bowl-contending offense. Speaking of elite, the guys look back to Saturday and look at the Los Angeles Rams' 13-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Nate explains why sophomore receiver Puka Nacua has entered the top-tier of NFL wideouts and why his play the last two seasons is basically unparalleled from a statistical perspective. Also on Saturday, the Cincinnati Bengals eked out an overtime win over the Denver Broncos, keeping their playoff hopes alive. The guys talk about Joe Burrow's MVP case and how the Broncos still may backpedal into the playoffs against a Kansas City Chiefs team that will likely rest their starters next weekend. Closing out the show, they chat about Drew Lock and the New York Giants extinguishing the Indianapolis Colts' playoff hopes and Saquon Barkley's 2,000-yard season in a Philadelphia win over the Dallas Cowboys. Far from being routine gatherings, these events offer valuable opportunities for students to learn, collaborate, and draw inspiration, making them a cornerstone of a thriving educational environment. Careful planning and creativity are essential for a successful assembly. By incorporating educational, inspiring, and entertaining elements, educators can design sessions that capture students’ attention and leave a lasting positive impression. Begin by selecting a theme that resonates with students’ interests, aligns with school values, or reflects relevant current events or upcoming celebrations. A clear and meaningful theme provides direction and purpose for the assembly. Starting with a warm and enthusiastic welcome establishes a positive atmosphere and encourages active engagement from students and staff alike. Including a Thought of the Day offers a moment of reflection, inspiring optimism and introspection. Following this, a brief yet engaging update on school activities, achievements, or global news ensures students stay informed and connected to their community. Adding interactive or creative elements, such as performances, role plays, or quizzes, brings excitement and promotes participation. These activities allow students to showcase their talents, build public speaking confidence, and develop teamwork skills. As the assembly concludes, take time to acknowledge contributions, share key announcements, and end with a unifying gesture, such as the national anthem, a school pledge, or an uplifting message. This fosters a sense of pride and belonging among students and staff. To make the assembly truly impactful, ensure each segment is concise and engaging to maintain the audience’s attention throughout. Creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and involved enhances the overall experience, making the assembly memorable and meaningful. With thoughtful preparation and execution, school assemblies can become transformative platforms for growth, inspiration, and community building, leaving a lasting impact on everyone involved. The Latest: Police search for man who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO, new photos of suspect released“Cassoulet, that best of bean feasts, is everyday fare for a peasant but ambrosia for a gastronome.” ~ Julia Child When winter heads our way, bringing chilly temperatures and close, dark nights, my thoughts turn to Cassoulet, the iconic comfort food from southwestern France. It has it all – juicy beans, duck leg confit, sausages and sometimes pork or lamb, slowly simmered in well-seasoned broth, then baked in a wide-mouthed, glazed terra-cotta dish called a cassole . Like any truly traditional dish, there are multiple versions, all claiming to be the “authentic one.” Cassoulet originated in southwestern France. Toulouse claims it — and so does Castelnaudary and Carcassonne — and the recipes vary. Toulouse adherents eschew adding cubed pork. Castelnaudary purists add a bit of lamb, while Carcassonne’s adds partridge. In most restaurants, cassoulets are served in an individual cassole , bubbling with hot juices, and with a bit of duck leg peeking through the top. But at Hostellerie Etienne , a vast indoor- outdoor restaurant on the edge of a forest near Castelnaudary, the cassoulets come to the table in family-size cassoles , big enough to serve two, four, six or even 10 people, so you can share the dish with your dining companions. I don’t know if Etienne’s even has a single-serving bowl size. I didn’t see one, when I was there as the guest of a bean trader from Castelnaudary. According to him, Etiennne’s has the best cassoulet anywhere, and they use the Lauragais lingot beans known as the Castelnaudary bean. Copious doesn’t begin to describe the cassoulet scene there, with stacks of cassoles lined up in Etienne’s kitchen, next to caldrons of simmering beans, ready to be filled and popped into the vast ovens. Here in the Bay Area, we have our own go-to restaurants for cassoulets. Some, like the Left Bank Brasseries in San Jose, Menlo Park, Oakland and Larkspur, and Reve Bistro in Lafayette, only serve it during the winter months as a special. (Reve will be serving cassoulet Dec. 10-14, for example, and Jan. 7-11; reserve it when you reserve your table.) Others, such as Bistro Jeanty in Yountville and Le Central in San Francisco, always have it on the menu. Both Reve Bistro and Bistro Jeanty use cassoles made by potter Kathy Kernes at her Crockett Pottery in Crockett, and they are every bit as beautiful and as practical as those you’ll find in southwestern France. Kernes’ makes cassoles in six sizes ($38-$210), ranging from individual to “extra large plus,” which is very large indeed. (Browse the possibilities at www.crockettpottery.com.) Reve Bistro offers take-out cassoulets if you pre-order the week the dish is on the menu. Pick it up — in a takeout container, not a cassole! — then heat it at home. Just note that chef-owner Paul Magu-Lecugy only makes a limited number of portions. “It’s time consuming,” he says, noting for him, it is a two-day process. Le Central’s cassoulet is one of the more elaborate around, with lamb, pork shoulder and boudin blanc, as well as the all-important duck leg confit and slightly garlicky Toulouse sausage. Left Bank uses chef-owner Roland Passot’s recipe (see below) and keeps it simple, limiting the meats to duck leg confit and Toulouse sausages. (Don’t panic. If you’re making this at home, some specialty markets sell duck confit.) The beans are key to cassoulet. Once cooked, they should not be mushy, but hold their shape after the long cooking. In France, tradition calls for either Tarbais beans, a plump, white bean, or lingot beans — a strain of cannellini beans — in making cassoulet. As Passot suggests in his recipe below, you can substitute cannellini beans or Great Northern beans. Rancho Gordo produces a variety called cassoulet , a West Coast-grown bean from the Tarbais strain. Cassoulet isn’t difficult to make. It just requires time and patience. You can make it a couple of days ahead, refrigerate it and then slowly reheat it. That way, there’s nothing to do on the day of but sip a glass of wine while the beans and meats slowly heat to bubbling. Add a green salad and some crusty bread, and you’ll have the perfect winter meal. Or put your coat on and head to one of our local restaurants, where the cooking is done for you. All you need is a reservation. Serves 6 to 8 Beans: 4 cups dried lingot beans (white kidney, cannellini or Great Northern, will all work) 1 small carrot, peeled and chopped 1 small onion, diced (about 3⁄4 cup) 1 clove garlic, chopped 1 pound slab bacon or extra thick-cut bacon, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 sprigs of thyme 1 bay leaf Cassoulet: 1⁄4 cup duck fat (lard will do in a pinch) 2 pounds pork butt cut in 2-inch cubes 1 cup onions, diced small 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1⁄4 cup tomato paste 1 small can diced tomatoes 11⁄2-2 cups reserved bean water 6 Toulouse sausages 1 small garlic sausage 4 confit duck legs, purchased or homemade (see note below) 1 cup panko bread crumbs 1 teaspoon garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped 1⁄4 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil Note: If you are making your own duck confit, start the night before by rubbing the duck legs with a “green salt” mixture — kosher salt, parsley, a couple of bay leaves and thyme ground together. The next day, rinse the duck legs well, pat dry and place in an oven-safe cooking vessel with enough duck fat to cover the legs. Roast in a 225-degree oven for 21⁄2 to 3 hrs. The night before, place the beans in a deep pot and add enough water to cover by 2 inches. Let beans soak overnight. The next day, rinse the beans well. Add the rinsed beans, carrots, onions, garlic, bacon, thyme and bay leaf to cold water and cook, over low heat, until the beans are tender. Strain the beans, saving the water, and set aside the beans. In a large braising pan, melt the duck fat over medium high heat. Once the pan is hot, brown the pork butt pieces without stirring. When beginning to brown, start stirring, making sure you scrape the bottom if it starts to caramelize. The pork doesn’t need much color, but it does need to cook in the duck fat for a while. Add lots of salt and pepper. This is not a shy dish. When the pork is nice and brown on all sides, add the 1 cup onions and garlic, and sauté until the onions are soft and cooked through. Add the tomato paste, diced tomatoes and reserved liquid from the beans. Stir, using a rubber spatula to clean the side of the pot. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Bring the heat under the braising pan up to high. Once at a rolling boil, turn down to low heat and add all the sausages. When they are cooked through, remove and set aside. Slice the garlic sausage in half and cut into 1-inch pieces. Return the whole and sliced sausages back to the pot along with the cooked beans. Continue to cook on low heat until the pork is cooked through. Taste for seasoning; add more salt and pepper if needed. Transfer the beans and pork to a heavy, wide mouth, earthenware, clay or cast iron baking dish that can hold 5 to 6 quarts. Bake at 250 degrees for about 11⁄2 hours, checking at least every 30 minutes. It may require a bit more time. If the dish is starting to look too dry, add a small amount of reserved bean broth or chicken stock. Add warmed duck legs to the cassoulet and make a breadcrumb topping by combining the panko, garlic, parsley, thyme and extra virgin olive oil. Return the dish to the oven and continue baking until the crumbs brown on the top. — Courtesy Roland Passot, Propriétaire, Chef Culinary Officer, Vine HospitalityNone

Judge dismisses charges against 2 Detroit-area election workers in double-voting caseNANO Nuclear Energy Announces Closing of $60 Million Private Placement with Three Accredited Institutional InvestorsAs President Joe Biden's term comes to an end, social media users are falsely claiming that his administration spent billions of dollars on the construction of just a handful of electric vehicle charging stations. Multiple high-profile figures, including sitting members of Congress, have promoted the claims. The claims misrepresent funding set aside by the 2021 Infrastructure and Jobs Act , also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, for a national network of publicly available electric vehicle chargers . Biden has set a goal of creating 500,000 such chargers by 2030. Here's a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: The Biden administration spent $7.5 billion to build eight electric vehicle charging stations. THE FACTS: That's incorrect. The $7.5 billion figure refers to the total amount allocated through the 2021 law to build a network of charging stations across the U.S., not the amount that has already been spent. There are currently 214 operational chargers in 12 states that have been funded through the law, with 24,800 projects underway across the country, according to the Federal Highway Administration. A charger, often called a charging port, provides electric power to one vehicle at a time through a connector, which is plugged into the vehicle. Stations are physical locations that can have multiple chargers. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg called the claims spreading online “false” in a series of X posts. “$7.5B has not been spent, nor anything like that,” he wrote, adding that federally funded chargers are built by individual states, not the federal government, and that most will be built in the second half of the 2020s. The total $7.5 billion in funding consists of $5 billion distributed through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program , or NEVI, and $2.5 billion distributed through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program , or CFI. NEVI funds, as determined by a formula, go annually to departments of transportation in all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, from 2022 to 2026. The funds will be available until 2030. Each year, 10% of NEVI funding is set aside for states and local governments that require additional assistance. CFI provides grants to states and other localities through an application process. It funds electric vehicle charging, as well as other alternative fueling infrastructure, with a focus on underserved and disadvantaged communities. Rep. Michael Rulli, a Republican from Ohio, was among multiple high-profile figures who falsely claimed this week that the entire budget has already been spent. “Pete Buttigieg will leave his post as Transportation Secretary having spend $7.5 BILLION to build 8 EV charging stations,” he wrote in an X post that had received approximately 62,900 likes and shares as of Wednesday. “His legacy will be squandering billions on something nobody wants, while millions struggle to afford the things they need.” Rulli's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. By early this year, only four states — Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Hawaii — had opened stations funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, The Associated Press reported in March . A Washington Post article published the next day said this amounted to just seven stations . Loren McDonald, an independent analyst tracking the electric vehicle charger buildout, told the AP that when assessing the progress that's been made it's important to understand that some states have extensive experience constructing electric vehicle charging infrastructure while others have little to none. He explained that Wisconsin, for example, had to pass a new law in order to comply with federal requirements. “This is a federal program, but at the end of the day, it's completely dependent on the states,” he said. “And so the real criticism probably needs to be directed at the states that are moving slowly or how the program was structure. But I don't know how else you would have done it.” Asked whether the federal government could do anything to help states move faster, McDonald suggested that it could have provided them with more guidance on how to manage their individual buildouts. All 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia have access to two rounds of NEVI funding totaling nearly $2.4 billion, according to the Federal Highway Administration. As of Friday, 37 states have access to their third round of funding, for an additional $586 million total. The agency explained, however, that this does not represent money that has already been spent — just the money that is available to fund projects. The Federal Highway Administration has announced more than $1.3 billion in awards through CFI and funds set aside by NEVI with $779 million in grants currently available under both programs. This also represents money that is available for projects rather than money that has been spent. There are currently more than 203,000 publicly available charging ports across the U.S., with nearly 1,000 being turned on every week, according to the agency. This is more than double the number available in 2021. In addition to NEVI and CFI, funding sources include federal tax incentives and private investments. TORONTO — Canada's main stock index lost more than 100 points Tuesday ahead of an expected interest rate cut Wednesday, while U.S. markets were also down. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 121.09 points at 25,504.33. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 154.10 points at 44,247.83. The S&P 500 index was down 17.94 points at 6,034.91, while the Nasdaq composite was down 49.45 points at 19,687.24. “Relative to the churn we have seen in the markets the last few days ... today being a little bit of a boring day would be fairly welcome for many investors,” said Stephen Duench, vice-president and portfolio manager for AGF Investments Inc. Wednesday is set to be more exciting, with an interest rate cut expected in Canada and important consumer inflation data coming in the U.S. “I do expect a little bit more fireworks tomorrow,” said Duench. The Bank of Canada is widely expected to announce an outsized cut Wednesday of half a percentage point, he said. “Anything other than that would be a surprise.” The U.S. Federal Reserve has its last decision of the year scheduled for next week, and market watchers are leaning toward a smaller quarter-percentage-point cut there, said Duench. It would be the third cut this year after the central bank hiked rates to a two-decade high to fight inflation. The inflation report will be the last significant data point before the central bank’s decision, Duench said. If the inflation report shows price growth is proving more stubborn than expected, that could change the Fed’s thinking on rates next week, he said. “Maybe that's part of the reason we've seen churn in the market the last few days in the U.S.” Beneath the surface, there was some movement in the tech sector, where Oracle sank 6.7 per cent after its latest earnings report missed expectations. Meanwhile, Google's stock price rose by more than five per cent. The company on Tuesday unveiled its new chip meant for quantum computing. Duench said after the advent of artificial technology led a rally earlier this year, quantum computing could be another frontier for investors to keep an eye on. FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are shutting down CeeDee Lamb with two games remaining after their 2023 All-Pro receiver spent the second half of the season dealing with a sprained right shoulder. The team said Thursday that additional exams revealed enough damage to keep Lamb off the field Sunday at Philadelphia and in the final game at home against Washington. The team said surgery was not expected to be required. Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention a few hours before last weekend's 26-24 victory over Tampa Bay . The decision on Lamb means the Cowboys will finish the regular season with at least five former Pro Bowlers on injured reserve. Among the others are quarterback Dak Prescott, who was limited to eight games before a season-ending hamstring tear, and right guard Zack Martin. The seven-time All-Pro made it through 10 games before deciding on season-ending ankle surgery. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence didn't playing after Week 4 because of a foot injury, and cornerback Trevon Diggs battled a variety of injuries while playing 11 games before a knee injury ended his season. Lamb initially injured his right shoulder when it hit the turf hard twice in a 27-21 loss at Atlanta on Nov. 3. He kept playing and had at least 100 yards in each of his last two games — both victories — before getting shut down. The 25-year-old Lamb sat out the entire offseason and preseason in a contract dispute after getting career highs in catches (an NFL-best 135), yards receiving (club-record 1,749) and touchdowns (12) in 2023. The holdout finally ended with a $136 million, four-year extension in late August, but neither the Cowboys nor their star receiver could get that production going again this season. Dallas (7-8) is missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020, Lamb's rookie year. Lamb finishes the season with 101 catches for 1,194 yards and six TDs. New Delhi, Dec 26 (PTI) His flailing and delicate health notwithstanding, the politician in former prime minister Manmohan Singh came out sharply during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when he accused his successor Narendra Modi of lowering the dignity of public discourse and the gravity of the office of the prime minister by giving “hateful speeches” during the poll campaign. In an appeal to voters of Punjab ahead of the seventh phase of Lok Sabha polls on June 1, Singh had asserted that only the Congress can ensure growth-oriented progressive future where democracy and Constitution will be safeguarded. The senior Congress leader had also hit out at the BJP government for imposing an “ill-conceived” Agnipath scheme of the Armed Forces, which he termed as a threat to national security. “The BJP thinks that the value of patriotism, bravery and service is only four years. This shows their fake nationalism,” he had said in what is considered as his last letter to voters of Punjab. The Congress had released Singh’s letter to the media on May 30 in the peak of electioneering that was written ahead of Lok Sabha polls in Punjab. Singh had said those who trained for regular recruitment were woefully betrayed by the outgoing regime. “The youth of Punjab, the son of the farmer, who dreams of serving the motherland through the Armed Forces, is now thinking twice about getting recruited only for a 4-year stint. Agniveer scheme endangers national security. Congress party has therefore promised to abolish the Agniveer scheme,” he had said. Mounting an attack on Modi, Singh had said, “I have been keenly following the political discourse during this election campaign. Modi ji has indulged in the most vicious form of hate speeches, which are purely divisive in nature. Modi ji is the first prime minister to lower the dignity of public discourse, and thereby the gravity of the office of the prime minister. “No prime minister in the past has uttered such hateful, unparliamentary and coarse terms, meant to target either a specific section of the society or the opposition. He has also attributed some false statements to me. I have never in my life singled out one community from the other. That is the sole copyright of the BJP,” the former prime minister had said. “People of India are seeing through all of this. This narrative of dehumanization has now reached its peak. It is now our duty to save our beloved nation from these forces of discord,” Singh had said. He had appealed to the voters to give love, peace, fraternity and harmony a chance in India and urged the Punjab voters to vote for development and inclusive progress. “I appeal to all the young minds to exercise caution and vote for a brighter future. Only Congress can ensure a growth-oriented progressive future, where democracy and the Constitution shall be safeguarded,” Singh had said. Modi had accused Singh of saying that Muslims have the first right on the country’s resources. Singh had said people of India are seeing through all of this. “This narrative of dehumanisation has now reached its peak. It is now our duty to save our beloved nation from these forces of discord,” he had said in the letter. The former prime minister had noted that India is standing at a crucial juncture and in the last phase of voting, “we have one final chance to ensure that democracy and our Constitution is protected from the repeated assaults of a despotic regime, trying to unleash dictatorship in India.” Lauding Punjabis as warriors, he had said they are known for their spirit of sacrifice and indomitable courage and innate belief in the democratic ethos of inclusiveness, harmony, amity and brotherhood can protect our great nation. “In the past ten years, the BJP government has left no stone unturned in castigating Punjab, Punjabis and Punjabiyat. 750 farmers, mostly belonging to Punjab, were martyred while incessantly waiting at Delhi borders, for months together. “As if the lathis and the rubber bullets were not enough, none less than the Prime Minister verbally assaulted our farmers by calling them ‘Andolanjeevis’ and ‘Parjeevi’ (Parasites) on the floor of the Parliament. Their only demand was the withdrawal of the three farm laws imposed on them without consulting them,” he had said. “Unprecedented unemployment and unbridled inflation have greatly widened inequality, which is now at a 100-year high. While the Congress-UPA, despite challenges, increased the purchasing power of our people, the misrule of the BJP Government has resulted in depletion of household savings to a historic 47-year low,” he had added. S&P/TSX composite down more than 100 points Tuesday, U.S. stock markets also lowerCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- Indiana coach Curt Cignetti didn't think he needed to say it. Following Saturday's 38-15 loss at Ohio State , do his upstart Hoosiers still belong in the 12-team playoff? "Is that a serious question?" Cignetti responded defiantly. "I'm not even going to answer that one. The answer's so obvious." Cignetti then smiled and nodded yes with a wink before exiting the postgame podium. Tuesday will reveal whether the playoff selection committee agrees. Indiana's potential inclusion - or exclusion - figures to be the most controversial playoff storyline ahead of the final week of the regular season. Before traveling to Columbus, the fifth-ranked Hoosiers (10-1) had been one of the most dominant teams in the country, reaching double-digit wins for the first time in program history. They also became the first team since 1998 to start 8-0 without trailing once. All but one of the Hoosiers' wins came by at least two touchdowns. But the Hoosiers, who face 1-10 instate rival Purdue next weekend, will finish without a Top 25 win. Indiana's strength of schedule ranked just 106th coming into the Ohio State game. The Hoosiers scored a touchdown on their opening drive to take their first lead over Ohio State in five years. But the Buckeyes rolled the rest of the way, holding Indiana to just 53 yards in the first half, its lowest total in a first half in 10 years, according to ESPN Research. Ohio State led 31-7 before the teams traded meaningless touchdowns in the final 2 minutes. Hoosiers quarterback Kurtis Rourke , who was second nationally in QBR (88.1), completed just 8-of-18 passes for 68 yards while taking five sacks. "We couldn't protect the quarterback," Cignetti said. "Every time we dropped back to pass, something bad happened. ... it was like a nightmare." Special teams proved to be nightmarish for the Hoosiers, as well. Just before halftime, Indiana punter James Evans mishandled the snap and was tackled at the Hoosiers 7-yard line. The Buckeyes punched the ball in the end zone three plays later to take a 14-7 lead into half. Then, following an Indiana three-and-out to begin the third quarter, Ohio State's Caleb Downs returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown to ignite the onslaught. Indiana fell to 1-71 all time against AP Top 5 opponents, according to ESPN Research. "We didn't handle the noise very well," Cignetti said of playing in Ohio Stadium. "We didn't play our best game today. But I think a big part of that was because of them." The Hoosiers did get some help later Saturday afternoon. Florida knocked off Ole Miss 24-17, effectively removing the ninth-ranked Rebels (8-3) from the playoff conversation. But both the Big 12 and ACC could have multiple teams vying for playoff consideration. Still, Rourke said he believes Indiana's overall body of work should show that the Hoosiers are worthy of an at-large playoff bid. "I hope so. We trust ourselves against anybody," said Rourke, adding that he hopes to get a rematch with Ohio State "at some point" in the playoffs. "Next week is a big game," Rourke said. "We've got to go handle Purdue, and then move on take one game at a time."I’ve been thinking about financial risk lately. Should I change my asset allocation in my retirement portfolio, considering Donald Trump’s successful bid for the White House? Stock market valuations have risen smartly in recent years, which real income growth, productivity improvements, technological innovation, low unemployment rates and healthy corporate profits have largely powered. Yet with the election of Trump, voters have approved a massive economic experiment. The Trump administration comes into power with many policy goals, but four economic initiatives stand out: Enacting significant tax cuts; imposing broad-based and significant tariffs; sweeping raids, mass deportations and tighter immigration controls; and slashing federal government regulations. The extent that these plans turn into reality and how each policy will interact with the others is uncertain. The risks are obvious. The outcome isn’t. Enter risk management, a critical concept in finance. Professionals often associate risk with volatility. The tight link makes sense, since owning assets with high volatility hikes the odds of losses if there is a pressing need to sell the asset to raise money. However, for the typical individual and household, risk means the odds money decisions made today don’t pan out. Managing risk means lowering the negative financial impact on your desired standard of living from decisions gone wrong and when circumstances take an untoward turn. “Anything that makes reaching or maintaining that more likely reduces your risk, and anything that makes this less likely increases your risk,” writes Bob French, the investment expert at Retirement Researcher. “Everything else is just details.” The key risk management concept is a margin of safety, a bedrock personal finance idea broader than investment portfolios. It can include having an emergency savings fund, owning life insurance to protect your family and investing in your network of friends and colleagues to hedge against the risk of losing your job. The right mix depends on the particulars of your situation. In my case, after studying my portfolio, running household money numbers and reviewing lifestyle goals, I’m comfortable with the asset allocation in my retirement portfolio. There is too much noise in the markets for comfort, and market timing is always tricky. The prudent approach with my individual situation is to stay the course. That might or might not be true for your household. A thoughtful and broad-based review of the financial risks your household confronts is a sensible path to take at any time, but especially at this juncture in economic history. As it celebrates its 20th birthday, online video game “World of Warcraft” has demonstrated a rare longevity thanks to its loyal following and constant evolutions. “It is inspiring to be able to work on this rare game that has touched so many lives, and to also feel the burden of carrying that forward,” Ion Hazzikostas, the current director of the game, told AFP at the Gamescom trade show in Germany in August. As an early fan of “WoW” he joined California-based Blizzard, the American developer of the title, in 2008 before climbing the ranks. Although it was not the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game (a genre known as MMORPG) when it was released in 2004, “World of Warcraft” was an instant success, quickly attracting several million players worldwide. It benefited from the popularity of the Warcraft brand, a saga of real-time strategy games launched ten years earlier by Blizzard, which was bought by Microsoft in 2023. In the game, two factions face off in a fantasy universe populated by orcs and elves where thousands of players can connect and cooperate simultaneously, in exchange for a monthly subscription of $15 a month. It was the social aspect of the experience, still in its infancy at the time, that appealed to players. “It was a precursor,” said Olivier Servais, a specialist in online communities. “Blizzard focused on guilds and communities on a human scale, bringing together between 30 and 200 players.” In these groups, “people flirt, they confide about their daily lives”, weddings and funerals are organized, and the game becomes “a pretext to socialize”, he said. “WoW” was born the same year as Facebook, and comprised key elements such as online interactions and communities that would help create today’s globalized social networks. “It was many people’s first real exposure and connection to people in a digital virtual environment. And that was part of the magic, and that’s a hard thing to replicate,” Hazzikostas said. Since then, other popular games such as “Fortnite” or “League of Legends” have adopted similar codes. ‘Monument’ At its peak in the 2010s, “World of Warcraft” claimed more than 10 million active accounts, though the number could be higher because many people often share one account, in Asia, in particular. Blizzard no longer reveals the number of accounts, but “WoW” remains popular across the world. “We are not resting on our laurels, or coasting gently off into the sunset,” Hazzikostas said. Its 10th extension, “The War Within”, was released in August with new domains to explore and other changes. “Twenty years later, it remains a monument but in a gaming market that has completely changed,” Servais said. Hazzikostas said Blizzard is “trying new ambitious things to shake up what we’ve done and keep that vibrant”. “I don’t see an end point to ‘World of Warcraft’ on the horizon today,” he said, drawing parallels with franchises such as Marvel or Star Wars. — AFP‘Grant us fair weather for Battle’: Afton event to honor Rev.
