Alberta’s police watchdog says an RCMP officer is facing sexual assault charges stemming from a hotel room party two years ago. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says its investigation into the Leduc-based Mountie revealed evidence that gives reason to believe sexual assault offences happened and that the officer should be charged. It says they allegedly took place in an Airdrie hotel room while a group of people socialized in the early morning hours of Dec. 3, 2022. Const. Bridget Morla is charged with two counts of sexual assault. She has been released on the condition that she appear in court next week. The police watchdog says no further information would be released as the matter is before the courts.

Donald Trump has asked a New York state judge to dismiss the criminal case in which he was convicted in May of 34 felony counts involving hush money paid to a porn star in light of his victory in the November US presidential election. Login or signup to continue reading Justice Juan Merchan in last month delayed Trump's previously scheduled November 26 sentencing indefinitely to give him the chance to seek dismissal. Trump's lawyers argue having the case loom over his four-year presidential term that begins on January 20 would cause "unconstitutional impediments" to the Republican businessman-turned-politician's ability to govern. Prosecutors with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office supported delaying the sentencing to give Trump the chance to make his case for dismissal, though they said they would oppose that bid. The prosecutors have until Monday to respond. The judge has not indicated when he would rule on Trump's motion to dismiss, and has not set a new date for sentencing. Bragg's office has suggested he defer all proceedings in the case until Trump, 78, leaves the White House in 2029. The New York case stemmed from a $US130,000 ($A200,000) payment Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels for her silence before the 2016 election about a sexual encounter she has said she had a decade earlier with Trump, who denies it. A Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to cover up his reimbursement of Cohen. It was the first time a US president - former or sitting - had been convicted of or charged with a criminal offence. Trump pleaded not guilty in the case, which he has sought to portray as a politically motivated attempt by Bragg, a Democrat, to interfere with his presidential campaign. Falsification of business records is punishable by up to four years in prison. Before he was elected, experts said it was unlikely - but not impossible - that Trump would face time behind bars, with punishments such as a fine or probation seen as more likely. Trump's victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 election made the prospect of imposing a sentence of jail or probation even more politically fraught and impractical, given that a sentence could have impeded his ability to conduct the duties of the presidency. Trump was charged in three additional state and federal criminal cases in 2023, one involving classified documents he kept after leaving office and two others involving his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. He pleaded not guilty in all three cases. None have gone to trial. A Washington judge on November 25 dismissed the federal criminal case over his attempts to hold onto power. Prosecutors had moved to drop both that case and the classified documents case due to a Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president. Trump also faces state criminal charges in Georgia over his bid to reverse his 2020 loss in that state, but that case remains in limbo. As president, Trump would have no power to shut down the New York or Georgia cases because they were filed in state courts. Trump in November nominated his defence lawyers in the hush money case, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, to serve senior roles at the Justice Department during his administration. TORONTO (AP) — Canada is already examining possible retaliatory tariffs on certain items from the United States should President-elect Donald Trump follow through on his threat to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products, a senior official said Wednesday. has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if the countries don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across southern and northern borders. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products from Canada and as one of his first executive orders. A Canadian government official said Canada is preparing for every eventuality and has started thinking about what items to target with tariffs in retaliation. The official stressed no decision has been made. The person spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly. When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term in office, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced against the U.S. in a tit-for-tat response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Many of the U.S. products were chosen for their political rather than economic impact. For example, Canada imports $3 million worth of yogurt from the U.S. annually and most comes from one plant in Wisconsin, home state of then-House Speaker Paul Ryan. That product was hit with a 10% duty. Another product on the list was whiskey, which comes from Tennessee and Kentucky, the latter of which is the home state of then-Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell. Trump made the threat Monday while railing against an influx of illegal migrants, even though the numbers at Canadian border pale in comparison to the southern border. The U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone — and 23,721 arrests at the Canadian one between October 2023 and September 2024. Canadian officials say lumping Canada in with Mexico is unfair but say they are happy to work with the Trump administration to lower the numbers from Canada. The Canadians are also worried about a influx north of migrants if Trump follows through with his plan for mass deportations. Trump also railed about fentanyl from Mexico and Canada, even though seizures from the Canadian border pale in comparison to the Mexican border. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Canadian officials argue their country is not the problem and that tariffs will have severe implications for both countries. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports are from Canada. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing in for national security. “Canada is essential to the United States’ domestic energy supply,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said. Trump has pledged to cut American energy bills in half within 18 months, something that could be made harder if a 25% premium is added to Canadian oil imports. In 2023, Canadian oil accounted for almost two-thirds of total U.S. oil imports and about one-fifth of the U.S. oil supply. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is holding a emergency virtual meeting on Wednesday with the leaders of Canada’s provinces, who want Trudeau to negotiate a bilateral trade deal with the United States that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that her administration is already working up a list of possible retaliatory tariffs “if the situation comes to that.”ON the plus side – at least the run of five straight defeats is over. But the slump goes on for Manchester City as they somehow blew a three goal lead by conceding three goals in 14 minutes. City are the first team in Uefa Champions League history to be leading a match by three goals as late as the 75th minute and fail to go on to win. It leaves their European hopes in serious peril with games at Juventus and Paris Saint Germain still to come - as they sit 15th in the competition's standings. But where does it leave their season with a huge trip to Liverpool looming on Sunday? It looked like normal service was resumed as they took a three goal lead in the 53 rd minute – thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland . READ MORE ON MAN CITY Somehow though they let it slip as the Dutch side came storming back and grabbed an astonishing equaliser a minute from time. It was Bernardo Silva who said City were in a dark place after they were beaten at Sporting Lisbon earlier this month. Guardiola didn’t agree then – but they have lost twice more since then, including a 4-0 hammering by Spurs last Saturday. Kevin De Bruyne admitted it has been ‘chaotic’ with all their problems. Most read in Champions League But last night it got that little bit darker. FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS There were flashes of the City we have come to know over recent seasons though – but also of how fragile their confidence has become in their dismal run. With tricky games still to come, this was one City simply had to win. It is the kind of European tie they have normally made light work of in recent years but these are not normal times for Pep Guardiola’s men. A run of five straight defeats – across three different competitions – made it the worst run of the Catalan’s managerial career. In fact it was 2006 last time a City team last went on a six match losing streak – back in the days when Stuart Pearce was in charge. Early on they looked in determined mood and came to going ahead as Haaland’s flick header hit the base of the post before Timon Wellenreuther clawed away the rebound A volley from Jack Grealish looked destined for the net but hit the back of team-mate Phil Foden and ballooned over the bar. Foden almost made amends with a low shot that was pushed around the post by Wellenreuther at full stretch. The home side were in full control and should have been ahead – and weren’t, before a triple change in the 60th minute. City fans were starting to worry they have seen this script before. Brian Priske said beforehand he was worried about a backlash from the English champions but they had held firm. And their first decent chance of the night came when Igor Paixao got through but fluffed his attempt to chip Ederson . Back at the other end Dutch defender Nathan Ake came close as his header from a Grealish corner drifted just wide. Haaland was denied by a last ditch tackle from David Hancko but from the resulting corner he went down under challenge by Quinten Timber. The Romanian ref pointed to the spot and there was even some suggestion it was given for a handball. Whichever way, it looked a soft one but apparently there was not enough to suggest a clear and obvious error. City’s top scorer – who missed his last spot-kick in Lisbon earlier this month – was made to wait but looked confident as he sent Wellenreuther the wrong way. That’s 16 for the season already for the Norwegian – and people say he has been struggling recently. Yet as Guardiola said on Monday – with hardly anyone else chipping in, where would they be without Haaland’s goals? It's now 51 goal involvements for Haaland – 46 goals and five assists – in just 44 games in his favourite competition. That lifted some of the tension that was building around the Etihad and Matheus Nunes went close as his effort was deflected into the side netting. The resulting corner was only half cleared and Ilkay Gundogan’s 20 yard shot was deflected past his own keeper by Hancko. It might not have gone in without the defender’s help but a bit of good fortune was just what the German needed. City’s treble winning skipper has found it difficult since returning to the Etihad after a year in Barcelona but that will do his confidence no harm. And three minutes later, the tie was over as Nunes burst clear down the right and sent over a low cross that a stretching Haaland turned in. Having reached his half century in the first half, he had now made a start towards the next one. You could see the confidence returning to the home side and now it seemed just a question of how many they would score. But Josko Gvardiol gifted the visitors a way back in as his lazy pass back to the keeper did not have the legs to reach Ederson . Anis Hadj Moussa nipped in and went round the keeper to give the Dutch a bit of hope. And they were dreaming of a famous comeback as Gvardiol again gave the ball away to put the visitors on the attack. Jordan Lotomba’s cross somehow squeezed between Ederson and the post and sub Santiago Giminez chested it over the line. Now it was panic stations and as Paixao got in ahead of Ederson who had dashed out of goal. He then kept his cool and crossed for Hancko to head home at the back post. A truly astonishing ending. Alan Shearer believes the draw could be WORSE for morale, than City's recent five consecutive defeats. It's the first time Guardoila - whose head went down at 3-1 - failed to win a game from 3-0 up in his managerial career. And the first time City have not won form 3-0 up since 1989 against Bournemouth. Amazon pundit Shearer said: "This could spell disaster for Guardiola. I can't believe the decision making at the end of that game. "They looked light, they looked weak, they looked frail. "You cannot give the opposition a chance, give them hope, and that's exactly what they did. READ MORE SUN STORIES "With two minutes to go they tried to take a quick free-kick. Why? Their game management was awful. It's been a disaster for them." City head to Prem leaders Liverpool on Sunday looking rather shaky.

The first official trailer for Disney ’s live-action Snow White movie starring Rachel Zegler has dropped, and many have slammed the feature and its star for the “woke” take on the classic tale. Zegler is no stranger to controversy, after previously defending Taylor Swift online , but also for her anti-Donald Trump social media message after the Presidential election. However, her controversies are now following her as backlash grows following the first look at her new film, which is a live-action modern take on the classic fairytale, which Disney first adapted into a 1937 cartoon. Rachel Zegler was almost cut from Snow White because of controversial comment Rachel Zegler apologizes after anti-Trump post after Disney 'received calls' The first trailer for the film dropped Tuesday showing egler in the titular role, Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and a look at the CGI dwarves, However, Zeigler’s portrayal of the princess was quickly slammed. The trailer shows Zeigler’s version of Snow White running into the forest after Gadot’s Evil Queen is revealed to want her dead, and she quickly befriends the seven dwarves who promise to keep her safe. However, unlike the original tale, where Snow White was found by the evil queen in disguise and given a poison apple, it appears much more will happen beyond that, as she returns to the castle grounds to fight back against the Queen on behalf of the kingdom. Fans quickly shared their disappointment on social media, with several commenting negatively. “Where the prince oh I forgot yall removed it to be more woke ok,” one person wrote on Instagram . “What has Snow White been turned into a girl boss? No one like that,” another wrote on X. “Another woke Disney dumpster fire. And this actress is insufferable,” another said. “This is a seaming pile of poo Woke Disney trash,” a third shared. Much of the ire is based off Zegler’s past comments where she bashed the original film’s premise and the fact that Snow White found love with a prince who “stalked” her. In addition, Disney’s live-action remakes often give the classic princesses more heroic twists to their characters. The 2017 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast famously saw backlash as Emma Watson’s take became an inventor, whereas the original cartoon showed Belle liking to read, but left her father, Maurice, as the inventor.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates once voiced his doubts about Bitcoin BTC/USD , stating that he would bet against the cryptocurrency if given the opportunity. What Happened : During an interview in 2018, Gates criticized Bitcoin’s lack of productivity as an asset class. “As an asset class, you’re not producing anything and so you shouldn’t expect it to go up. It’s kind of a pure ‘greater fool theory’ type of investment,” Gates told CNBC. He further added, “I agree I would short it if there was an easy way to do it.” Despite his criticism of Bitcoin and Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), Gates acknowledged the potential of the underlying blockchain technology. "Bitcoin and ICOs, I believe completely of the crazier, speculative things," Gates added. He also said that someone once gave him some Bitcoin for his birthday, but he sold it a few years afterward. Then again, maybe not. It depends, Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said, if the Texans (7-5) are "locked in" and able to make a December push. "I just look at it as being intensely focused on your job and being where you're supposed to be, executing the minor details of your job," Ryans said. "It all comes down to minor, minute details that you get exploited if you don't do them the correct way and teams find those and they make you pay. "And a lot of the things, as I talked to our guys about, are things that we can control." Jacksonville (2-9), sitting at the bottom of the AFC South, is coming off a humiliating 52-6 loss to the Detroit Lions. It marked the fourth straight setback for the Jaguars, who had dropped their previous three games by a combined 13 points. Jaguars coach Doug Pederson noted that changes are coming, although he opted not to show his cards. "I'm not going to get into the whole details of things, but there are things in the run game that we have to get back to," Pederson said. "Even in the passing game, tweaking some things there. There are things that can, hopefully, help our production over the last six weeks." One of those things could be the return of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has not played since Nov. 3 due to a left shoulder injury. Lawrence was a limited participant during practice on Wednesday, with Pederson telling reporters Monday that the signal-caller's status for Sunday would be determined as the week progresses. Pederson has also had his eye on Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud, who has run into some struggles during his sophomore season. Stroud has thrown nine interceptions in 12 games (all starts) after throwing only five as a rookie. He was picked off twice in the 32-27 setback against Tennessee, also throwing for 247 yards and two touchdowns on 20-for-33 passing. Pederson still believes the 23-year-old can hurt the Jaguars, though. "Playing the quarterback position is hard," Pederson said. "I don't know everything that goes on down there. I'm sure there's been injury, guys have missed (time). He's missed his playmakers from time to time. And then there's the film. There's the film out there." The Texans have lost three of their past four games and four of their past six as defenses continue to solve Stroud. Defensive ends Will Anderson Jr. (ankle) and Denico Autry (knee) were among those who didn't practice for Houston on Wednesday, and safety Jalen Pitre is expected to miss several weeks because of a shoulder injury. Linebacker Yasir Abdullah (hamstring) was the only Jaguar to miss practice on Wednesday. Cornerback Tyson Campbell (shoulder) joined Lawrence as limited. Sunday marks the second meeting of the season between the teams. The Texans topped Jacksonville 24-20 back on Sept. 29. --Field Level Media
