They numbered about a hundred, some of them shown here, when this photo was taken on Wednesday morning. —Niño Jesus Orbeta MANILA, Philippines — A Catholic Church leader appealed for sobriety and prayers over what he called a “brewing political storm,” noting how it had distracted and “drained” the energy of government leaders who should be focused on uplifting the poor. “Of late, events in our country have been disconcerting. Many of our people are still reeling from the effects of the onslaught of recent typhoons,’’ Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula said in a statement on Wednesday. “The brewing political storm that our political leaders are facing has drained their energy to serve those in most need and the neglected,” Advincula added. READ: PNP: Duterte supporters allegedly promised payment for Edsa rally The cardinal’s statement, which did not name any political leader, came a few days after Vice President Sara Duterte again went on a rant and said she had arranged to have President Marcos, first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez assassinated if an alleged plot to kill her succeeds. Advincula called on Filipino Catholics to pray that their leaders “receive the grace to exercise statesmanship in most trying times so that sobriety may prevail in our land and that political issues and personal interests may not divide the nation.” He also asked “leaders of goodwill” from the different sectors “to do what they can to prevent the escalation of political and personal conflicts.” Meanwhile, Fr. Jerome Secillano, rector of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, popularly known as Edsa Shrine, denied social media reports that the pro-Duterte crowd that flocked to the church on Tuesday were “shooed away.” Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula —Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila Office of Communications FB photo “They even expressed thanks before they left after the 6 p.m. Mass. They said it was a good thing that they were allowed to stay inside the Edsa Shrine,” Secillano said in a Facebook post. But he called out the unnamed organizers of a “rally” that was supposed to be held outside the shrine and attended by the Mass goers. “I am appealing to the organizers of this ‘rally.’ Please don’t take advantage of these people. Don’t make them your hapless pawns. You’ve been exploiting them for too long,” Secillano said. “These people need genuine care. They are waiting and hoping. But you made them believe that help and change are coming. They are disillusioned with your empty promises, rhetorics and your feigned concern for them. Please stop your evil ways. These people deserve better!” he added. Social media posts earlier made the rounds inviting Duterte supporters to gather on Wednesday afternoon on “Edsa,” which pertains to the highway, not specifically to the shrine. The invitation, posted on the Facebook of former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, reads: “We are no Filipinos for nothing. The country needs us. Let’s go to Edsa. Let’s express our sentiments!!! November 27, 2024 —– 4PM” The Philippine National Police said it had also monitored posts indicating that those who came to Edsa Shrine were offered P500 each to show up. “There are videos showing that some of them were allegedly transported from their barangays to the venue. They were promised food and cash,” PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said at a press briefing. “Without demeaning the purpose and intent of the people there, again, we don’t want to prejudge our countrymen here who were promised and used [by others] for their own vested interest,” she said. Around a hundred people were at the shrine as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Fajardo said. “I understand they were allowed by the management of the Edsa Shrine as long as their purpose was to pray once they entered the chapel. They are prohibited from engaging in any protest action, particularly inside the chapel. They are also not allowed to stay overnight,” she said. NEW YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail on Wednesday as he awaits a May sex trafficking trial by a judge who cited evidence showing him to be a “serious risk” of witness tampering and proof he has tried to hide prohibited communications with third parties while incarcerated. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ruled in a five-page order following a bail hearing last week. At the hearing, lawyers for the hip-hop mogul argued that a $50 million bail package they proposed would be sufficient to ensure Combs doesn’t flee and doesn’t try to intimidate prospective trial witnesses. Two other judges previously had agreed with prosecutors that the Bad Boy Records founder was a danger to the community if he is not behind bars. Subramanian concurred. “There is compelling evidence of Combs’s propensity for violence,” Subramanian wrote. Lawyers for Combs did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the decision. Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for prosecutors, declined comment. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees. An indictment alleges that he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. A federal appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan considers his bail request. That appeal was put on hold while Subramanian, newly appointed to the case after an earlier judge stepped aside, considered the bail request for the first time. Subramanian said he took a fresh look at all the bail arguments and the evidence supporting them to make his decision. Prosecutors have insisted that no bail conditions would be sufficient to protect the public and prevent the “I’ll Be Missing You” singer from fleeing. They say that even in a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Combs has orchestrated social media campaigns designed to influence prospective jurors and tried to publicly leak materials he thinks can help his case. They say he also has contacted potential witnesses through third parties. Lawyers for Combs say any alleged sexual abuse described in the indictment occurred during consensual relations between adults and that new evidence refutes allegations that Combs used his “power and prestige” to induce female victims into drugged-up, elaborately produced sexual performances with male sex workers known as “Freak Offs.” Subramanian said evidence shows Combs to be a “serious risk of witness tampering,” particularly after he communicated over the summer with a grand jury witness and deleted some of his texts with the witness. The judge also cited evidence showing that Combs violated Bureau of Prisons regulations during pretrial detention at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn when he paid other inmates to use their phone code numbers so he could make calls to individuals who were not on his approved contact list. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. He said there was also evidence that he told family members and defense counsel to add other people to three-way calls so their communications would be more difficult to trace and that he made efforts to influence his trial’s jury pool or to reach potential witnesses. Subramanian said his “willingness to skirt” jailhouse rules to conceal communications was “strong evidence” that any conditions of release would not prevent similar behavior. The judge said defense claims that Combs stopped using one particular phone technique criticized by prosecutors was belied by the fact that Combs apparently used it again on Sunday, two days after his bail hearing last week. Even a bail proposal that would include the strictest form of home confinement seemed insufficient, the judge said. “Given the nature of the allegations in this case and the information provided by the government, the Court doubts the sufficiency of any conditions that place trust in Combs and individuals in his employ — like a private security detail — to follow those conditions,” Subramanian wrote. The Prime Minister insisted the UK will back Ukraine “for as long as it takes” as he made a speech at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London, but for the first time acknowledged the conflict could move towards a negotiated end. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has in recent weeks suggested he is open to a possible ceasefire with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Kyiv and its European allies meanwhile fear the advent of Donald Trump’s return to the White House could result in American aid being halted. President-elect Trump has said he would prefer to move towards a peace deal, and has claimed he could end the conflict on “day one” of his time in power. As he attempts to strike up a good relationship with the incoming president, Sir Keir revealed he had told Mr Trump the UK “will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come”. In his speech at London’s Guildhall, the Prime Minister said there is “no question it is right we support Ukraine”, as the UK’s aid to Kyiv is “deeply in our self-interest”. Allowing Russia to win the war would mean “other autocrats would believe they can follow Putin’s example,” he warned. Sir Keir added: “So we must continue to back Ukraine and do what it takes to support their self-defence for as long as it takes. “To put Ukraine in the strongest possible position for negotiations so they can secure a just and lasting peace on their terms that guarantees their security, independence, and right to choose their own future.” Mr Zelensky told Sky News over the weekend he would be open to speaking with Mr Putin, but branded the Russian president a “terrorist”. He also suggested Ukrainian territory under his control should be taken under the “Nato umbrella” to try to stop the “hot stage” of the war with Russia. In a banquet speech focused on foreign affairs, the Prime Minister said it was “plain wrong” to suggest the UK must choose between its allies, adding: “I reject it utterly. “(Clement) Attlee did not choose between allies. (Winston) Churchill did not choose. “The national interest demands that we work with both.” Sir Keir said the UK and the US were “intertwined” when it came to commerce, technology and security. The Prime Minister added: “That’s why, when President Trump graciously hosted me for dinner in Trump Tower, I told him that we will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come.” He also repeated his commitment to “rebuild our ties with Europe” and insisted he was right to try to build closer links with China. “It is remarkable that until I met President Xi last month there had been no face-to-face meeting between British and Chinese leaders for six years,” the Prime Minister said. “We can’t simply look the other way. We need to engage. To co-operate, to compete and to challenge on growth, on security concerns, on climate as well as addressing our differences in a full and frank way on issues like Hong Kong, human rights, and sanctions on our parliamentarians,” he added. The Prime Minister said he wants Britain’s role in the world to be that of “a constant and responsible actor in turbulent times”. He added: “To be the soundest ally and to be determined, always, in everything we do. “Every exchange we have with other nations, every agreement we enter into to deliver for the British people and show, beyond doubt, that Britain is back.” Ahead of Sir Keir’s speech, Lord Mayor Alastair King urged the Prime Minister and his Government to loosen regulations on the City of London to help it maintain its competitive edge. In an echo of Sir Keir’s commitment to drive the UK’s economic growth, the Lord Mayor said: “The idealist will dream of growth, but the pragmatist understands that our most effective machinery to drive growth is here in the City, in the hands of some of the brightest and most committed people that you will find anywhere in the world.”

Following their 38-15 home win over the No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes trolled Indiana and head coach Curt Cignetti. In the waning seconds of the game, a fake newspaper headline was shown on the big screen at Ohio Stadium, reading: "Buckeyes win??? Google it!" That was a clear reference to something Cignetti said back in December, shortly after the Hoosiers hired him. When asked at the time how he goes about recruiting and convincing prospects to play for him, Cignetti said: "I win. Google me."
