( MENAFN - Daily News Egypt) Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and renewable Energy, emphasized that providing a high-quality, reliable, and stable electricity supply is a central objective of the current work plan. This strategy involves advancing Egypt's energy transition, expanding renewable energy projects, increasing reliance on clean energy, and safeguarding the environment. Additionally, efforts are focused on improving the efficiency of the electricity grid, enhancing performance, and reducing fuel consumption. Minister Esmat made this statement during the Ordinary General Assembly of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), which he chaired with Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, in attendance. The meeting, held at the Ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, reviewed the company's activities during the 2023/2024 fiscal year and approved its financial statements. Esmat highlighted the ministry's ongoing modernization of the grid, transitioning from a traditional to a smart network capable of handling significant generation capacities, particularly from renewable sources. The goal is to ensure efficient energy transmission with minimal losses and the optimal use of resources. He underscored the importance of key projects such as agricultural land reclamation, noting the electricity sector's role in supporting the transmission network to meet global standards. This is achieved through economic production, quality-focused operations, resource optimization, environmental protection, and robust human and technological capabilities. Mona Rizq, Chairperson of the EETC, presented a report detailing the company's significant achievements in the 2023/2024 fiscal year. The company invested approximately EGP 7.6bn in renewing and expanding high and ultra-high voltage stations and lines, developing regional control centers, and integrating renewable energy projects into the grid. The renewable energy capacity from wind, solar, and hydro sources-either operational, under construction, or in contracting stages-reached around 22.8 GW. In addition, battery storage projects were initiated to stabilize the national electricity grid. These efforts are in line with Egypt's energy strategy to achieve 42% renewable energy contribution to the national energy mix by 2030. Rizq also highlighted projects aimed at enhancing power interconnectivity with neighboring countries, reflecting the ministry's vision of positioning Egypt as a regional energy hub. Ongoing regional interconnection projects with Jordan, Libya, and Sudan are being enhanced, with further plans for connections with Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Greece, and Italy. The ministry ensures the efficient operation of the grid through daily monitoring and collaboration with the petroleum sector to optimize fuel consumption patterns. Total electricity generation for the 2023/2024 fiscal year reached 229.1 GWh, reflecting a 6% year-on-year increase. Key maintenance achievements included 99% completion for ultra-high and high-voltage transformer maintenance, 100% for high-voltage cables, and 97% for overhead lines. The grid was optimized by redistributing loads across transformers and cables while upgrading protection systems and improving efficiency. Notable progress was made in control center operations, with the new national control center in the New Administrative Capital in trial operation. Other regional control centers also made significant strides, with the Cairo center upgrade 87% complete, the Canal center fully updated, and work ongoing at the Delta center. A notable achievement was the reduction in technical losses in high-voltage networks, with losses declining to 3.38% during the fiscal year. In concluding the session, Minister Ismat commended the EETC's efforts to strengthen the national transmission network, improve efficiency, and accommodate additional renewable energy capacity. He reaffirmed the commitment to expanding and modernizing the grid, particularly in Upper Egypt and underserved regions, while adhering to world-class quality standards and advanced technological systems. The ministry continues to prioritize human resource development through training in cutting-edge energy technologies and knowledge transfer initiatives. The answer: You can keep it — and no fine. Chuck Hildebrandt, 63, of Chicago said he visited the public library in Warren while in town for Thanksgiving, carrying a book titled "Baseball's Zaniest Stars." He borrowed it in 1974 as a 13-year-old "baseball nut" but never returned it. Chuck Hildebrandt of Chicago holds the book "Baseball's Zaniest Stars," which was due Dec. 4, 1974, at the Warren, Mich., library, on Dec. 10. "When you're moving with a bunch of books, you're not examining every book. You throw them in a box and go," said Hildebrandt, who lived in many cities. "But five or six years ago, I was going through the bookshelf and there was a Dewey decimal library number on the book. 'What is this?'" Inside the book was a slip of paper indicating it was due back at the Warren library on Dec. 4, 1974. Hildebrandt told The Associated Press he decided to keep the book until 2024 — the 50th anniversary — and then try to return it. He figured the library might want to publicize the long overdue exchange. Chuck Hildebrandt of Chicago shows the library slip in the overdue book "Baseball's Zaniest Stars" on Dec. 10. He said he recently met library director Oksana Urban, who listened to his pitch. Hildebrandt said he hasn't heard anything since then, though Urban told the Detroit Free Press that all is forgiven. "Some people never come back to face the music," she said of patrons with overdue books. "But there was really no music to face because he and the book were erased from our system." So "Baseball's Zaniest Stars" is back on Hildebrandt's shelf. In return, he's now trying to raise $4,564 for Reading is Fundamental , a nonprofit literacy group. The amount roughly represents a 50-year overdue library fine. Hildebrandt seeded the effort with $457. The Major League Baseball draft is unique among professional sports drafts. The 30 organizations pick teenagers and college students who will not join their big league clubs for years—if ever. These athletes will spend that time honing their craft in the minor leagues, where long bus rides and minuscule paychecks are the norm. A few will move quickly up the ranks, seizing playing time opportunities to advance their careers and making their names known to scouts, fans, and other observers around the country. Some of the best will become MLB stars, but there's minimal correlation to draft position. Four of the players on this list were picked after hundreds of other diamond darlings, and only two were #1 overall selections. There's also more than a handful who didn't do much for the teams that drafted them, including superstars such as Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith, and Randy Johnson. Each of these players was traded before they evolved into Hall of Famers. Still, calling the draft a "crapshoot" might be going too far. College players are " slightly more likely " than high schoolers to reach the revered stadiums of the majors, and third-rounders have a better chance than fifth-rounders, for example, though the margins are slim, as Vice reported. Teams not only make picks based on years-in-advance projections but also whether they can sign players, a step that must be completed before those youngsters begin playing professionally. To see how clubs have fared since the inaugural draft in 1965, ATS.io compiled a list of the best draft pick by each franchise using data from Baseball Reference . The players were ranked using career wins above replacement , so not one recent choice was named. The amazing Mike Trout, a 32-year-old selected in 2009, is the youngest player. Unsigned picks were not considered, and players who were traded as picks were credited to their acquiring teams. ‘We didn’t have a good day’: Greens set to suffer significant election losses
(Reuters) - Reddit has resolved a problem with its website, the social media company said on Thursday, after an outage impacted thousands of users for about an hour. The outage began around 10 a.m. ET and affected more than 70,000 users in the United States at its peak, according to Downdetector.com, which tracks outages by collating status reports from several sources including users. "An update we made caused some instability. We reverted and are seeing Reddit ramp back up," the company said in an emailed response, a day after announcing it had fixed a software bug that was preventing tens of thousands of people from accessing the platform. Reddit's status page confirmed the latest issue that affected its website at 10:51 a.m. ET. Co-founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005, Reddit is a platform where users share links and participate in discussions within interest-based communities called subreddits. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS From left: Revolution Wellness Centre’s Carla Taylor co-founded Matter Queer Space with spouses Bre Cristobal Calma and Nix Cristobal Calma in the basement below the centre. Matter Queer Space Manitoba — located in the previous basement home of Closet Space at 433 Graham Ave. — is a non-profit venture designed to offer LGBTTQ+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of colour) Winnipeggers a welcoming place to connect over art, books and shared interests. “A lot of (hanging out) happens in bars and not all queers are into that scene.” Matter was founded by spouses Bre and Nix Cristobal Calma and friend Carla Taylor, who runs Revolution Wellness Centre on the building’s main floor. “There aren’t a lot, if any, spaces in the community right now to just come and be together,” Bre says, adding the goal is to offer barrier-free programming to visitors of all ages. “Having a queer intergenerational space, that’s a really big thing because the queer community can be segmented in some ways,” Nix says. “A lot of (hanging out) happens in bars and not all queers are into that scene.” The basement is bright and cosy, with a gallery room at one end, library shelving in the middle and seating areas throughout. There are plans to add a gender-affirming retail shop in the future. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS Matter Queer Space Manitoba is a new art gallery, library and programming space for the local LGBTTQ+ and BIPOC community. In addition to art shows and workshops, the programming schedule is going to be community-driven, meaning anyone is invited to pitch and host public or private events that fit with Matter’s mandate. Ideas discussed so far include yoga classes, movie nights, craft groups and a reading club. “Not a book club, where you have to sit and talk; instead, you sit and collectively read together. You’re not necessarily forced into socialization that may be uncomfortable for some people, but it still gives you an opportunity to be out and around people that you know will accept you as you are,” Taylor explains. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS While Matter Queer Space Manitoba launches Saturday with an open house and maker’s market, the gallery space will open in January. It’s the kind of gathering that speaks to the project’s overall ethos. “We picture this space as a bit of an introvert haven,” Taylor says. Matter launches Saturday with an open house and mini maker’s market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring goods from 15 queer vendors, with sensory-friendly and mask-required shopping during the first two hours. The first art exhibit is set to open in January, featuring the work of local visual artist and muralist Cat Hues, a.k.a. Pink Panda. Matter’s founders believe it will be one of the city’s first permanent gallery spaces designated specifically for showing work by marginalized LGBTTQ+ artists. “It’s surprising it hasn’t been done yet because there are a lot of wonderful, racialized, trans, queer, non-binary artists,” says Nix, who is also a multimedia artist. “We picture this space as a bit of an introvert haven.” With every exhibit, the featured artist will be invited to host talks and art-making workshops for the public, the results of which will be turned into a group show curated by the artist. “We really want to challenge the idea of meritocracy. This idea that you have to have a degree in art curation to curate an exhibit,” Bre says. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS Matter’s library — which is the continuation of a project started by Taylor and friend Renu Shonek in 2019 — is stocked with borrowable books by bell hooks, Joshua Whitehead, James Baldwin and others. A book drive by Winnipeg’s Willow Press has brought dozens of new titles into the fold and Matter is accepting donations of used books of any genre by queer BIPOC authors. “We know these books are out there, but not everyone does. It’s nice to bring them together in a collection to learn about more authors and more talent in the community, and even to encourage some of our community members in their own writing and creativity,” Taylor says. To reduce financial barriers for visitors, the programming at Matter will be offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Other than donations collected through a GoFundMe campaign, the organizers have been footing the bill for the project out-of-pocket. They hope to find sustainable, long-term funding in the future. “This has definitely been a passion project and a labour of love. The three of us are just community members, none of us have experience doing any of this — running galleries or libraries — but it’s a space that we wanted to see and we knew there was a need for,” says Bre. “Nobody else was doing it, so someone had to.” Visit for more information. eva.wasney@winnipegfreepress.com Eva Wasney has been a reporter with the Arts & Life department since 2019. . The team of scientists is working on finding out its main reasons, solutions, and the damage caused by it. The department of Science and Technology (DST) has given the responsibility of this to KK Banerjee Center (Kedareshwar Banerjee Center for Atmospheric and Ocean Studies) of the University. The centre has been given the title of Centre for Excellence and a grant of Rs 5.77 crore for the project. The project was awarded to Prof Suneet Dwivedi of the centre, who is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the project. In fact, the study for the project already started at the initial level. With the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), the impact of monsoon change in eastern and central India on agriculture and health will be studied. Along with Prof Dwivedi, this project also has Prof Shailendra Rai, Vivek Kumar Pandey, Sudhir Singh, and Prof JN Tripathi as other team members. Prof Dwivedi informed that due to monsoon change, the intensity of rain has increased today, resulting in heavy rain in a short time.
