Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes celebrates its 90th anniversary

NEW YORK (AP) — A slide for market superstar Nvidia on Monday knocked Wall Street off its big rally and helped drag U.S. stock indexes down from their records. The S&P 500 fell 0.6%, coming off its 57th all-time high of the year so far. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 240 points, or 0.5%, and the Nasdaq composite pulled back 0.6% from its own record. Nvidia’s fall of 2.5% was by far the heaviest weight on the S&P 500 after China said it’s investigating the company over suspected violations of Chinese anti-monopoly laws. Nvidia has skyrocketed to become one of Wall Street’s most valuable companies because its chips are driving much of the world’s move into artificial-intelligence technology. That gives its stock’s movements more sway on the S&P 500 than nearly every other. Nvidia’s drop overshadowed gains in Hong Kong and for Chinese stocks trading in the United States on hopes that China will deliver more stimulus for the world’s second-largest economy. Roughly three in seven of the stocks in the S&P 500 also rose. The week’s highlight for Wall Street will arrive midweek when the latest updates on inflation arrive. Economists expect Wednesday’s report to show the inflation that U.S. consumers are feeling remained stuck at close to the same level last month. A separate report on Thursday, meanwhile, could show an acceleration in inflation at the wholesale level. They’re the last big pieces of data the Federal Reserve will get before its meeting next week on interest rates. The widespread expectation is still that the central bank will cut its main interest rate for the third time this year. The Fed has been easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high since September to offer more help for the slowing job market, after bringing inflation nearly all the way down to its 2% target. Lower interest rates can ease the brakes off the economy, but they can also offer more fuel for inflation. Expectations for a series of cuts from the Fed have been a major reason the S&P 500 has set so many all-time highs this year. “Investors should enjoy this rally while it lasts—there’s little on the horizon to disrupt the momentum through year-end,” according to Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide, though he warns stocks could stumble soon because of how overheated they’ve gotten. On Wall Street, Interpublic Group rose 3.6% after rival Omnicom said it would buy the marketing and communications firm in an all-stock deal. The pair had a combined revenue of $25.6 billion last year. Omnicom, meanwhile, sank 10.2%. Macy’s climbed 1.8% after an activist investor, Barington Capital Group, called on the retailer to buy back at least $2 billion of its own stock over the next three years and make other moves to help boost its stock price. Super Micro Computer rose 0.5% after saying it got an extension that will keep its stock listed on the Nasdaq through Feb. 25, as it works to file its delayed annual report and other required financial statements. Earlier this month, the maker of servers used in artificial-intelligence technology said an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or by the company’s board following the resignation of its public auditor . All told, the S&P 500 fell 37.42 points to 6,052.85. The Dow dipped 240.59 to 4,401.93, and the Nasdaq composite lost 123.08 to 19,736.69. In the oil market, a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude rallied 1.7% to settle at $68.37 following the overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar Assad, who sought asylum in Moscow after rebels. Brent crude, the international standard, added 1.4% to $72.14 per barrel. The price of gold also rose 1% to $2,685.80 per ounce amid the uncertainty created by the end of the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule. In stock markets abroad, the Hang Seng jumped 2.8% in Hong Kong after top Chinese leaders agreed on a “moderately loose” monetary policy for the world’s second-largest economy. That’s a shift away from a more cautious, “prudent” stance for the first time in 10 years. A major planning meeting later this week could also bring more stimulus for the Chinese economy. U.S.-listed stocks of several Chinese companies climbed, including a 12.4% jump for electric-vehicle company Nio and a 7.4% rise for Alibaba Group. Stocks in Shanghai, though, were roughly flat. In Seoul, South Korea’s Kospi slumped 2.8% as the fallout continues from President Yoon Suk Yeol ’s brief declaration of martial law last week in the midst of a budget dispute. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.19% from 4.15% late Friday. AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. Ludhiana: Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University ( Gadvasu ), in collaboration with the Indian Dairy Association (IDA) Punjab Chapter, celebrated National Milk Day with great fanfare. The event honoured Dr Verghese Kurien , the ‘Father of the White Revolution’, by organising a seminar on ‘Transformative Role of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Dairying ’. Experts highlighted the remarkable journey of dairy development in Punjab, transforming from a milk-deficit state to a frontrunner in dairy production, and its contribution to the national economy. Dr JPS Gill, vice-chancellor of Gadvasu and chief guest, elaborated on the importance of the livestock sector in the agrarian economy, which contributes around 39% of Punjab’s total agricultural GDP. With only 2.16% of the national bovine population, Punjab contributes around 6.40% (13.40 MT) of milk annually to the national milk pool. Amazon is running a holiday promotion that lets customers show appreciation for their delivery drivers by clicking a button to send them $5 — on the retailer’s dime. If you’ve recently shopped on Amazon, you can either use the company’s Alexa virtual assistant and say, “Alexa, thank my driver” or type, “Thank my driver” in the search bar on Amazon.com or the Amazon app. You’ll get a brief message confirming that the driver who delivered your most recent order will receive a notice of your thanks. For the first 2 million driver thank-yous customers submit, drivers will receive $5 tips. Customers can actually thank a driver all year round, according to an FAQ about the program on Amazon’s website, so if you have a driver who regularly goes above and beyond, a thank-you is a nice way to show your appreciation that isn’t limited to the holiday season. The company first rolled out the Thank My Driver feature in 2022. Since then, customers have used it over 40 million times. Last year, when Amazon ran the $5 tip promotion for the holidays, the 2 million limit was reached in less than three days. After that threshold was reached, the retailer announced that 1,000 drivers receiving the most thank-yous each day would each get an additional $100 reward through the end of the year. In addition, Amazon also recognized 15 top-ranking drivers with $10,000 or $25,000 awards. Amazon declined to say how many shoppers have used the Thank My Driver feature since the program opened Wednesday. The holiday promotion is only available in the U.S. for drivers and for Amazon Flex independent delivery contractors. In addition to the promotion, there are several other ways to thank delivery drivers during the holiday season. Some customers leave drinks and snacks out on their porches for drivers. But keep in mind that shippers may have policies restricting what delivery drivers can accept. U.S. Postal Service workers, for example, can only take gifts under $20 — and you’re not allowed to give them cash. Michael McLoone-Imagn Images/File Photo The Magic and the Hornets, who meet on Monday night in Charlotte, have been posting impressive numbers lately, but only Orlando is seeing those numbers translate to multiple wins. Meanwhile, the Hornets are searching for more success regardless of certain individual numbers. Charlotte guard LaMelo Ball poured in 50 points in Saturday's 125-119 loss at Milwaukee. It was Charlotte's third loss in the last four games, with the lone win coming in overtime against the Detroit Pistons on Thursday. "That's just him leading the team, as always," Brandon Miller said of Ball, who entered Sunday third in the NBA in scoring (30.2). "Just being the top dog, making everybody better, getting everybody in the right places. (He's) competing at the highest level he can and trying to get some wins for this Charlotte Hornets team." The Magic are one of the league's hottest teams, winning eight of their last nine. Among those triumphs was a 114-99 decision Nov. 12 against the visiting Hornets. Franz Wagner posted 30 points as the Magic topped Detroit 111-100 on Saturday. Wagner was the only Orlando starter with a double-figure point total, while Moritz Wagner had 18 points off the bench as three reserves posted 10 or more points. Moritz Wagner's value to the Magic has been notable. "Moe wakes up with 10 points," Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley said. "I think that's just how it looks for him. He and Franz, obviously the brother connection is one thing. They're knowing where one guy is going to be, the chemistry and communication that they have, just the ability to play off each other." Franz Wagner tallied 32 points in this season's first meeting with Charlotte. For the Hornets, both Ball and Miller made six 3-pointers in the Milwaukee game. Ball, who also distributed 10 assists, took 38 of Charlotte's 100 shots from the field, while Miller hauled in 11 rebounds. Only Ball and former Hornets guard Kemba Walker have scored 50 in a game for the Charlotte franchise. Ball said he admires Walker and has embraced the latter's support. "That's my guy for sure," Ball said. "Always helping, always looking out. I mean, just always putting in the extra effort to be there and stuff. So, that's all love." The Hornets, who will start a five-game homestand on Monday, have won their last four home games. However, Charlotte is dealing with an injury as forward Grant Williams appears likely to miss Monday's matchup. "I think it has just been diagnosed as a right knee injury," Hornets coach Charles Lee said. "We'll continue to get some imaging and evaluations. The most important thing is that all of our prayers are with Grant, and we hope the news comes back as good as possible." The Magic could be closer to getting Wendell Carter Jr. back after he went through another workout on Saturday. "He's gone through some pretty, pretty strenuous workouts, so we're going to continue to see how he responds to those and we'll go from there," Mosley said. --Field Level Media REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
