It is a mission they look to accomplish through donated items — including personal care items such as lotions and lip balms, comfortable and fuzzy holiday socks, card games, small notebooks — that will be placed into care packages. Each care package will feature a customized holiday card that 150 Temple High School Honor Society members will have a hand in creating. “I really hope that people in the hospital feel more connected to the community,” Reeva Guleria, a Temple High School senior who serves the chapter as secretary, said. “Especially when you are in the hospital for a really long, extended time, you don’t have that personal connection with society or the community outside the hospital. We hope that putting together these packages will help them feel that connection.” There is a goal to create 64 care packages — one students believe they can to achieve. “We have had a really good influx of items and volunteers coming in and people are really getting invested in this project,” Jayden Bihl, a Temple High School senior who serves as president, said. “We have seen a lot of people who are not in NHS donate, and that is really good because we are getting a lot of school input and not just from our club. I want the families to feel like they can have some sort of celebration for the holidays.” This latest service project was spurred by a Temple High School Honor Society member who has lived through personal health challenges. Staci Bangsund, a Temple High School teacher who serves as the chapter sponsor, credited the chapter’s leadership. “I really love seeing the students get involved this way,” she said. “All of the students in NHS are highly driven academically. At Temple High School, we are not only providing an outstanding education for these kids (and) we are not only hoping that they go do outstanding things for themselves. The ultimate goal of education is to equip students to use their minds, creativity and education to go out and make the world a better place.” The National Honor Society chapter will accept donations through Tuesday before they spend a couple of days packaging the items and taking them to Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center on Friday. “It is wonderful to see them seeing the purpose of their education in action and positively impacting their community,” Bangsund said. “I know that they will take this spirit of service with them as they continue.”

In 2019 and 2020, Giannis Antetokounmpo won back-to-back MVPs as he secured the title of the best player in the world. At the time, his place at the top was inarguable and the Milwaukee Bucks were seen as a borderline dynasty that would be competing for championships for at least the next decade. After winning the finals in 2021, Antetokounmpo reached the height of his career and fans were quick to discuss his place among the NBA's all-time greats. Today, at 30 years old, Giannis is still one of the best players in the world even if he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Because since the title run a few years ago, the Bucks have been in a miserable state and many critics have called them the most disappointing team in the league. After trading for Damian Lillard and pairing him with Giannis, the Bucks had ambitions of winning another championship but it's been a mess so far and Giannis' Bucks have been on the hot seat ever since . After winning just 49 games last year, the Bucks are on track to finish with a similar record, or worse, this season if they don't turn things around. As much as Giannis hates the reactionary takes from the fans and media, they aren't exactly wrong when they say the Bucks are not a good team right now and they will only validate that opinion if the team continues to struggle. At 13-11 this season, the Milwaukee Bucks are 6th in the East but they could easily slide back down to 8th or 9th with a few more losses. No matter what happens, you can be sure that the reactions will be extreme one way or the other. As for Giannis, he's done worrying about what the critics have to say. More than most sports, the NBA media has a knack for stirring up drama and creating panic in an otherwise stable situation. The key for Giannis and the Bucks is to drown out the noise and work together to solve their biggest problems. Tomorrow they'll have another chance to set things right in the Emirates NBA Cup Semifinal. They're in Las Vegas for a battle against the Atlanta Hawks at 4:30 PM EST. If they win, they'll play on Tuesday for a chance at the NBA Cup championship. If not, their next game won't be until Friday, December 20th, at 7:30 PM EST. DALLAS — As Perry Minasian prepared to leave MLB’s winter meetings on Wednesday, he wasn’t sure what he had actually accomplished during his few days in Dallas. The Angels didn’t acquire any players during the event – aside from a left-handed reliever picked in the Rule 5 draft – but the Angels’ general manager said he hoped he laid some groundwork for deals that could come to fruition throughout the rest of the winter. “We’ll find out,” he said. “I hope so. There are a lot of conversations.” The Angels still need some of everything. Minasian, per usual, would not rank the needs. “We want to get better,” he said. “We want to get deeper. Is that the bullpen? Is that the position players? Is that infield? Is that outfield? Is that starting rotation? We’ll find out. But we would definitely like to add to the team, not only the 26 but below that too.” Considering what the Angels have done and what they have currently, the infield nonetheless still seems to be a pressing need. Shortstop Zach Neto, third baseman Anthony Rendon and utility infielder Luis Rengifo will all be coming off injuries. So far the Angels have only added Kevin Newman and Scott Kingery to provide depth behind that group. A player who can start at third or second would be ideal. The Angels have checked in on trades for at least three third basemen: Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals, Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. A deal for any of those players could be costly – in terms of money with Arenado and talent with Bohm or Suarez. Among free agents, third baseman Alex Bregman is the top of the market, followed by second baseman Gleyber Torres. Bregman is certainly out of the Angels’ price range, and Torres might be as well. One intriguing option below them would be Jorge Polanco, who is a 31-year-old bounce-back candidate who can play second, third or shortstop. He could likely be had for $8 million to $10 million. Polanco had a career .780 OPS over parts of 10 seasons with the Minnesota Twins, but that dropped to .651 last season with the Seattle Mariners, who declined his option. Seattle is a notorious pitchers’ park, and Polanco had a .606 OPS at home, and a more reasonable .694 mark on the road. Some of last year’s decline could have been attributed to playing through knee issues that ultimately required surgery. He also had a .740 OPS with 11 home runs during the second half of the season. Polanco is also a switch-hitter who has been better from the left side over his career. The Angels are in need of any good hitters, but ideally they’d add some who are better against righties, because that was their weaker side last season. “You always want to balance the lineup as best as you can,” Minasian said. “It’s just about what’s available. So we wouldn’t pass on a right-handed hitter that we feel like is productive.” The Angels selected left-handed reliever Garrett McDaniels from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft. McDaniels joins the Angels’ 40-man roster. They must keep him on the major league roster all season or else offer him back to the Dodgers. McDaniels, 24, had a 3.19 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 731⁄3 innings last season. He pitched just three innings at Double-A, and the rest were at two levels of Class-A. “Good arm, can spin two breaking balls, heater’s 94-95, combination of ground balls and strikeouts,” Minasian said. “Now, it’s at lower levels, but stuff is stuff. We felt like it was worth taking a look at him at spring training, and we’ll see if he can make the team. ... “You can never have too many lefties, and especially guys that can really spin the ball. It’s a good trait to have in the bullpen.” Before Minasian came to Dallas, he stopped in Arizona to get a look at the team’s upgraded spring training facilities in Tempe. The Angels re-did their clubhouse, weight room and offices, and they added pitching and hitting labs. “It looks great,” Minasian said. “I had a chance to walk through. It’s not completely finished. Obviously, we still have time. It blew me away. It’s better than I even thought it would be. The labs are awesome.” The Angels have been behind other organizations in terms of their technology. This facility should help them catch up, and Minasian believes it will translate to improved performance of their players. “I think it’s going to be significant,” Minasian said. “I really do. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol avoided an opposition-led attempt to impeach him over his short-lived imposition of martial law , as most ruling party lawmakers boycotted a parliamentary vote Saturday to deny a two-thirds majority needed to suspend his presidential powers. The scrapping of the motion is expected to intensify public protests calling for Yoon’s ouster and deepen political chaos in South Korea, with a survey suggesting a majority of South Koreans support the president’s impeachment. Yoon’s martial law declaration drew criticism from his own ruling conservative People Power Party, but it is also determined to oppose Yoon’s impeachment apparently because it fears losing the presidency to liberals. After the motion fell through, members of the main liberal opposition Democratic Party rallied inside the National Assembly, chanting slogans calling for Yoon's impeachment or resignation. The party's floor leader, Park Chan-dae, said it will soon prepare for a new impeachment motion. “We'll surely impeach Yoon Suk Yeol, who is the greatest risk to Republic of Korea,” party leader Lee Jae-myung said. “We'll surely bring back this country to normal before Christmas Day or year's end.” Despite escaping the impeachment attempt, many experts worry Yoon won’t be able to serve out his remaining 2 1/2 years in office. They say some ruling party lawmakers could eventually join opposition parties’ efforts to impeach Yoon if public demands for it grow further. Protests against Yoon are swelling On Saturday, tens of thousands of people densely packed several blocks of roads leading up to the National Assembly, waving banners, shouting slogans and dancing. Protesters also gathered in front of PPP’s headquarters near the Assembly, angrily shouting for its lawmakers to vote to impeach Yoon. A smaller crowd of Yoon’s supporters, which still seemed to be in the thousands, rallied in separate streets in Seoul, decrying the impeachment attempt they saw as unconstitutional. Impeaching Yoon required support from two-thirds of the National Assembly, or 200 of its 300 members. The Democratic Party and five other small opposition parties, which filed the motion, have 192 seats combined. But only three lawmakers from PPP participated in the vote. The motion was scrapped without ballot counting because the number of votes didn’t reach 200. National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik called the result “very regrettable” and an embarrassing moment for the country’s democracy that has been closely watched by the world. “The failure to hold a qualified vote on this matter means we were not even able to exercise the democratic procedure of deciding on a critical national issue,” he said. Opposition parties could submit a new impeachment motion after a new parliamentary session opens next Wednesday. If Yoon is impeached, his powers will be suspended until the Constitutional Court decides whether to remove him from office. If he is removed, an election to replace him must take place within 60 days. Yoon apologizes for turmoil Earlier Saturday, Yoon issued a public apology over the martial law decree, saying he won’t shirk legal or political responsibility for the declaration and promising not to make another attempt to impose martial law. The targeted politicians included Han, Lee and Woo, according to Kim Byung-kee, one of the lawmakers who attended the meeting. The Defense Ministry said Friday it suspended three military commanders including the head of the defense counterintelligence unit over their involvement in enforcing martial law. Vice Defense Minister Kim Seon Ho has told parliament that Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun ordered the deployment of troops to the National Assembly after Yoon imposed martial law. When it returns to the township in December, the Esquimalt Celebration of Lights is sure to brighten the nights of Greater Victoria residents. On Sunday, Dec. 1, the festival will feature live music, food, a visit from Santa, and a parade to help South Island residents kick off the holiday season. The celebration will start at 3 p.m. with musical performances at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, and at 5 p.m. the parade will begin at Canteen Road. At 5:30 p.m. there will also be Christmas carols from Vancouver Island's very own Maureen Washington and Rockheights Middle School. "It is a community event where people can come together to celebrate the holiday season with lights and festivities," noted the Celebration of Lights website. Thomas is trying out a 46-inch driver — a little more than an inch longer than normal — that he previously used for practice at home to gain speed and length. He blasted a 361-yard drive to 8 feet on the par-4 seventh hole and led the field in driving distance. But it was a few long putts that put him ahead of Scheffler, who had a 69. Thomas was on the verge of falling two shots behind when he made an 18-foot par putt on the par-3 12th hole. On the reachable par-4 14th, he was in a nasty spot in a sandy area and could only splash it out to nearly 50 feet. He made that one for a most unlikely birdie, while behind him Scheffler muffed a chip on the 13th hole and made his lone bogey of a windy day. People are also reading... Scheffler never caught up to him, missing birdie chances on the reachable 14th and the par-5 15th. Thomas hit his approach to 3 feet for birdie on the 16th after a 343-yard drive. Scheffler made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th to close within one. Scheffler missed birdie chances on the last two holes from the 10-foot and 15-foot range, while Thomas missed an 8-foot birdie attempt at the last. "I had a stretch at 13, 14, 15 where I felt like I lost a shot or two there, but outside of that I did a lot of really good things today," Scheffler said. Thomas hasn't won since the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills, and a victory at Albany Golf Club wouldn't count as an official win. But the two-time major champion has made steady progress toward getting his game back in order. "I'm driving it great. I've had a lot of confidence with it," Thomas said of his longer driver. "I feel like I've been able to put myself in some pretty good spots going into the green. I'm still not taking advantage of some of them as much as I would like, but that's golf and we're always going to say that." Thomas was at 17-under 199 and will be in the final group Sunday with Scheffler, who is trying to end his spectacular season with a ninth title.
