The gunman who stalked and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson fled New York City by bus, police officials told CNN on Friday. Video of the suspected shooter leaving the scene of the shooting Wednesday showed him riding a bicycle to Central Park and later taking a taxi cab to a bus depot, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN. Here's the latest: Police believe gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO has left New York City The gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer may have fled the city on a bus, New York City police officials told CNN on Friday. Video of the suspected shooter leaving the scene of the shooting Wednesday showed him riding a bicycle to Central Park and later taking a taxi cab to a bus depot, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN. “We have reason to believe that the person in question has left New York City,” Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Gunman’s steps after killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO give police new clues The gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer made sure to wear a mask during the shooting yet left a trail of evidence in view of the nation’s biggest city and its network of security cameras that have aided authorities piecing together his movements and his identity. A law enforcement official said Friday that new surveillance footage shows the suspect riding the subway and visiting establishments in Manhattan and provided more clues about his actions in the days before he ambushed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . The gunman’s whereabouts and identity remain unknown Friday, as did the reason for Wednesday’s killing. New York City police say evidence firmly points to it being a targeted attack . ▶ Read more about the search for the gunman For many companies, investor meetings are seen as a risk In many companies, investor meetings like the one UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was walking to when he was fatally shot are viewed as very risky because details on the location and who will be speaking are highly publicized. “It gives people an opportunity to arrive well in advance and take a look at the room, take a look at how people would probably come and go out of a location,” said Dave Komendat, president of DSKomendat Risk Management Services, which is based in the greater Seattle area. Some firms respond by beefing up security. For example, tech companies routinely require everyone attending a major event, such as Apple’s annual unveiling of the next iPhone or a shareholder meeting, to go through airport-style security checkpoints before entering. Others forgo in-person meetings with shareholders. ▶ Read more about how companies protect their leaders Police have obtained other surveillance images of the person wanted for questioning Those images include New York’s subway system, a law enforcement official said. In establishments where the person was captured on camera, he always appeared to pay with cash, the official said. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. — Mike Balsamo Another health insurer taking precautions after the shooting Medica, a Minnesota-based nonprofit health care firm that serves 1.5 million customers in 12 states, said it’s temporarily closing all six locations. The firm has offices in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and North Dakota, and employs about 3,000 people. Employees will work from home, Medica spokesman Greg Bury said in an email Friday. “The safety of Medica employees is our top priority and we have increased security both for all of our employees,” a statement from Medica said. “Although we have received no specific threats related to our campuses, our office buildings will be temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution.” Bury also said biographical information on the company’s executives was taken down from its website as a precaution. Government health insurance provider Centene Corp. says its Investor Day will now be virtual The insurer cited the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in its announcement about the Dec. 12 event. “All of us at Centene are deeply saddened by Brian Thompson’s death and want to express our support for all of those affected. Health insurance is a big industry and a small community; many members of the CenTeam crossed paths with Brian during their careers,” Centene CEO Sarah M. London said in a news release. “He was a person with a deep sense of empathy and clear passion for improving access to care. Our hearts are with his family and his colleagues during this difficult time.” Centene Corp. has grown in recent years to become the largest insurer in Medicaid, the state- and federally funded program that covers care for people with low incomes. Insurers manage Medicaid coverage for states, and Centene has more than 13 million people enrolled in that coverage. UnitedHealth Group says it’s focused on supporting Brian Thompson’s family The insurance company also said it’s focused on ensuring the safety of employees and assisting investigators. “While our hearts are broken, we have been touched by the huge outpouring of kindness and support in the hours since this horrific crime took place,” the company said. NY Mayor Eric Adams provided no new information on investigation’s progress during interviews But he said Friday that he’s confident police will arrest the shooter. “We are on the right road to apprehend him and bring him to justice,” Adams said on TV station WPIX. Hours after the shooting, UnitedHealthcare removed photographs of its executives from its website Later, it removed their names and biographies entirely. Investigators believe the suspect may have traveled to NY last month on a bus that originated in Atlanta Police and federal agents have been collecting information from Greyhound in an attempt to identify the suspect and are working to determine whether he purchased the ticket to New York in late November, a law enforcement official said. Investigators were also trying to obtain additional information from a cellphone recovered from a pedestrian plaza through which the shooter fled. Killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO spotlights complex challenge companies face in protecting top brass The fatal shooting of Brian Thompson while walking alone on a New York City sidewalk has put a spotlight on the widely varied approaches companies take to protect their leaders against threats. Experts say today’s political, economic and technological climate is only going to make the job of evaluating threats against executives and taking action to protect them even more difficult, experts say. Some organizations have a protective intelligence group that uses digital tools such as machine learning or artificial intelligence to comb through online comments to detect threats not only on social media platforms such as X but also on the dark web, says Komendat. They look for what’s being said about the company, its employees and its leadership to uncover risks. ▶ Read more about the steps companies take to protect their leadership Police test DNA and fingerprints on discarded bottle as they hunt for UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killer Police said Thursday they found a water bottle and protein bar wrapper from a trash can near the scene of the ambush and think the suspect bought them from a Starbucks minutes before the shooting. The items were being tested by the city’s medical examiner. The Associated PressRuben Amorim said he has inherited a "difficult position" at and described his new side as "a massive club but not a massive team." Having racked up 20 top-flight titles, United are English football's most successful club, domestically. But their impressive history has not been mirrored by results on the pitch over the last decade. Amorim has arrived at Old Trafford with United, who haven't won the title since 2013, in the bottom half of the table and they head into Saturday's game six points behind opponents -- who were playing in the Championship as recently as 2022. "We're a massive club but we're not a massive team and we know it so it is no problem to say it," Amorim told a news conference on Friday. "Our players have to understand that it's a very difficult position. "We're not one of the best teams in the league and we have to say and think that clearly but our past, our club is maybe the best one in the league. "So here we have a problem and we have to focus on the little things and little details." Amorim has had little time on the training pitch since taking over from Erik ten Hag because of a packed fixture list. The 39-year-old has been careful to play down expectations while the squad gets to grips with a new tactical set-up. However, he insists one non-negotiable is the amount of effort put in by his players and warned them they had to "run like mad dogs" if they want to be successful. "I think the way we sprint back, the way we sprint forward, the way we fight, we have to be very clear with the team, this is the first point we have to address then the tactical and technical aspects come later," Amorim said. "What I see is that they're making an effort and there's a lot of room to improve. Changing that thing you can sometimes say is simple because it's just running but it's something in the head of the players. "If you want to win we have to do it. Even with the best starting XI on the planet without running they will not win anything, that is very clear. If we want to win the we have to run like mad dogs. If not, we are not going to."Two of the league’s young quarterbacks looking to prove themselves meet Sunday afternoon in Foxborough as Anthony Richardson and the Colts (5-7) take on Drake Maye and the Patriots (3-9). The 2nd-year pro out of Florida, Richardson was benched earlier this season for a couple games before returning in impressive fashion completing 20 of 30 passes, throwing for 272 yards, and most importantly, leading the Colts to a 28-27 win over the Jets. However, Richardson was less than good last weekend against the Lions completing just 11 of 28 passes for 172 yards in a 24-6 loss to Detroit. Like Richardson in Indy, Drake Maye has had his ups and downs this season. The rookie out of North Carolina was also good two weeks ago in a 28-22 loss to the Rams completing 75% of his passes and throwing for 282 yards. However, the rookie out of North Carolina struggled last weekend. Like Richardson, accuracy has been a recurring issue for the young signal-caller. He completed just 22 of 37 passes at Miami in a loss to the Dolphins. Both Indianapolis and New England have much invested in these two young quarterbacks. It will be interesting to see if either show progress this weekend in the Northeast. Footnotes 1 Annual Recurring Revenue , or ARR , for any given period, is defined as the sum of ACV for all subscription contracts in effect as of the end of a specific period. For the purposes of this calculation, we assume that the contract term begins on the date a contract is booked, unless the terms of such contract prevent us from fulfilling our obligations until a later period, and irrespective of the periods in which we would recognize revenue for such contract. Excludes all life-of-device contracts. ACV is defined as the total annualized value of a contract. The total annualized value for a contract is calculated by dividing the total value of the contract by the number of years in the term of such contract. Excludes amounts related to professional services and hardware. 2 Average Contract Duration represents the dollar-weighted term, calculated on a billings basis, across all subscription contracts, as well as our limited number of life-of-device contracts, using an assumed term of five years for life-of-device licenses, executed in the period. 3 Weighted average share count used in computing diluted non-GAAP net income per share. Non-GAAP Financial Measures and Other Key Performance Measures To supplement our consolidated financial statements, which are prepared and presented in accordance with GAAP, this press release includes the following non-GAAP financial and other key performance measures: non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP operating expenses, non-GAAP operating income, non-GAAP operating margin, free cash flow, Annual Recurring Revenue (or ARR), and Average Contract Duration. In computing non-GAAP financial measures, we exclude certain items such as stock-based compensation and the related income tax impact, costs associated with our acquisitions (such as amortization of acquired intangible assets, income tax-related impact, and other acquisition-related costs), restructuring charges, litigation settlement accruals and legal fees related to certain litigation matters, the amortization and conversion of the debt discount and issuance costs related to convertible senior notes, interest expense related to convertible senior notes, and other non-recurring transactions and the related tax impact. Non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP operating expenses, non-GAAP operating income, and non-GAAP operating margin are financial measures which we believe provide useful information to investors because they provide meaningful supplemental information regarding our performance and liquidity by excluding certain expenses and expenditures such as stock-based compensation expense that may not be indicative of our ongoing core business operating results. Free cash flow is a performance measure that we believe provides useful information to our management and investors about the amount of cash generated by the business after capital expenditures, and we define free cash flow as net cash provided by (used in) operating activities less purchases of property and equipment. ARR is a performance measure that we believe provides useful information to our management and investors as it allows us to better track the topline growth of our subscription business because it takes into account variability in term lengths. We use these non-GAAP financial and key performance measures for financial and operational decision-making and as a means to evaluate period-to-period comparisons. However, these non-GAAP financial and key performance measures have limitations as analytical tools and you should not consider them in isolation or as substitutes for analysis of our results as reported under GAAP. Non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP operating expenses, non-GAAP operating income, non-GAAP operating margin, and free cash flow are not substitutes for gross margin, operating expenses, operating income (loss), operating margin, or net cash provided by (used in) operating activities, respectively. There is no GAAP measure that is comparable to ARR or Average Contract Duration, so we have not reconciled the ARR or Average Contract Duration data included in this press release to any GAAP measure. In addition, other companies, including companies in our industry, may calculate non-GAAP financial measures and key performance measures differently or may use other measures to evaluate their performance, all of which could reduce the usefulness of our non-GAAP financial measures and key performance measures as tools for comparison. We urge you to review the reconciliation of our non-GAAP financial measures and key performance measures to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures included below in the tables captioned “Reconciliation of GAAP to Non-GAAP Profit Measures” and “Reconciliation of GAAP Net Cash Provided By Operating Activities to Non-GAAP Free Cash Flow,” and not to rely on any single financial measure to evaluate our business. This press release also includes the following forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures as part of our second quarter fiscal 2025 outlook and/or our fiscal 2025 outlook: non-GAAP operating margin and free cash flow. We are unable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to their most directly comparable GAAP financial measures without unreasonable efforts, as we are currently unable to predict with a reasonable degree of certainty the type and extent of certain items that would be expected to impact the GAAP financial measures for these periods but would not impact the non-GAAP financial measures. Yes, your Apple Watch, as long as it is a Series 6 or newer, can track your AFib, or irregular heartbeat. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently awarded medical device development tool (MDDT) status to the Apple Watch's atrial fibrillation (AFib) history tracker. The feature is the first piece of digital health technology to earn MDDT status, the FDA said in a statement. Also: Your Apple Watch's AFib history could soon be used in clinical studies Both the new Watch Series 10 and last year's Series 9 are great watches, and ultimately, what's the better buy for you will come down to preference. We've already put these watches head to head, and think the main reasons you may choose to splurge on the newer Series 10 model really come down to these four factors: A lighter build and improved display, sleep apnea features, new finishes, and of course, price. Also: Apple Watch Series 10 vs. Apple Watch Series 9: Should you upgrade to the latest model? Black Friday is a great time to snag savings on popular health and wellness trackers, and both the Apple Watch and the Oura Ring certainly make the cut. However, there are a few key differences between to two, and ZDNET health and wellness tech expert Nina Raemont recommends the Oura Ring for those looking for detailed sleep tracking, amongst other things. Apple Watches are great options for activity tracking and easy compatibility if you own an iPhone. The Oura Ring Gen 3 Horizon is on sale for up to $100 off at Amazon, too. Also: Oura Ring vs. Apple Watch: Which health tracker should you buy? Apple has a lengthy lineup of its flagship tech wearable, with several iterations over the last few years. The newest watch release comes in the Apple Watch Series 10 , which was released in September 2024 . The Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen) remains the most up-to-date base model, released in 2023, and the Ultra 2 the newest feature-packed option, released in 2023 and re-released in new finishes in 2024. With multiple models available, both old and new, you'll be sure to find a watch that fits your needs and your price point. The Apple Watch models are not the only options for smartwatches, despite their popularity. ZDNET has tested dozens of the best smartwatches and fitness trackers (also on sale ahead of Black Friday ) so you can scope more alternative deals, including the Fitbit Versa 4, Fitbit Luxe, Google Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, and more. Also: The best Black Friday smartwatch and fitness tracker deals 2024: Early sales live now Similar to turning in an older cell phone to receive monetary credit towards purchasing a newer or more updated version, Apple and other major retailers often have options to "trade-in" other devices, like Apple watches. When participating in a trade-in offer, you are providing your previously used item to the retailer in exchange for a predetermined amount of cashback that can be directly applied to your next item purchase of the same product. Eligible trade-in items and the cashback offered for each product are decided by each individual retailer and are often determined by factors such as age, condition, and functionality of the item being presented for trade-in. Apple recently decided to even bump up the amount they offer for trade-ins as well, too. While we've seen plenty of offers on Apple watches throughout this year, including most recently during October Prime Day, Apple products don't frequently see major discounts, especially on newer products. For the most part, you can expect 10-20% in savings on Apple watches, and Black Friday and Cyber Monday create the best environment for these covetable wearables to be on sale for the largest margin and at as many retailers as possible (both online and in-person). Last year, we saw some of the first major discounts on the Watch Series 9 ahead of the 2023 holiday shopping season, so you may be able to score savings on the newest Watch Series 10 this year. We'll keep you posted. Also: The best Black Friday Apple deals 2024: Early sales available now Semantics, mostly. Black Friday traditionally refers to the day of savings that follows Thanksgiving, which at one point was an in-store-only event. Over the years, Black Friday sales have expanded and lengthened to include online retailers, hence "Cyber Week" and "Cyber Monday." Cyber Monday refers to the Monday following Thanksgiving weekend, and originally referred to online savings on lots of products. These days, both Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer similar savings in-store and online. Each holiday season, we carefully select the range of products we focus our coverage on, so we can be sure we're bringing you the best deals and the most information on products we're experts on. ZDNET also only writes about deals we want to buy -- devices and products we desire, need or would recommend. Our experts looked for deals that were at least 20% off (or are hardly ever on sale), using established price comparison tools and trackers to determine whether the deal is actually on sale and how frequently it drops. We also looked over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the deals we're recommending. Our recommendations may also be based on our own testing -- in addition to extensive research and comparison shopping. The goal is to deliver the most accurate advice to help you shop smarter. You can find Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals pretty much anywhere (that means in-store and online). Popular retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Macy's, and more will all be offering holiday savings online and in their brick-and-mortar stores. Approximately 85,000 new passports are being held back by Service Canada, which stopped mailing them out a week before the nationwide Canada Post strike. "By holding residential mail several days in advance of a work stoppage, Service Canada has reduced the risk of having any passports held in Canada Post distribution centres," an Employment and Social Development Canada spokesperson told CTVNews.ca. "Those passports will be mailed out once the labour disruption is over and regular mail service resumes." Employment and Social Development Canada operates Service Canada, which issues Canadian passports. Anticipating a potential labour disruption, Service Canada stopped mailing passport packages after Nov. 8. A week later on Nov. 15, approximately 55,000 Canada Post workers went on strike after failing to reach a negotiated agreement with their employer. Mail and parcels will not be accepted, processed or delivered until the strike is over. The spokesperson said anyone who is in urgent need of a passport should call 1-800-567-6868 or visit a Service Canada location that offers passport pick-up to have their package transferred. Passport applications mailed just prior to the strike may still be with Canada Post, in which case Service Canada will be unable to process them until mail service resumes. Tech billionaire Elon Musk spent at least $270 million to help Donald Trump win the US presidency, according to new federal filings, making him the country’s biggest political donor. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Musk, the world’s richest person, was an ardent supporter of Trump’s White House campaign — funneling money into door knocking operations and speaking at his rallies. His financial backing, which has earned him a cost-cutting advisory role in Trump’s incoming government, surpassed spending by any single political donor since at least 2010, according to data from nonprofit OpenSecrets. The Washington Post reported that Musk spent more this election cycle than Trump backer Tim Mellon, who gave nearly $200 million and was previously the Republican’s top donor. Musk donated $238 million to America PAC, a political action committee that he founded to support Trump, filings late Thursday with the Federal Election Commission showed. An additional $20 million went to the RBG PAC, a group that used advertising to soften Trump’s hardline reputation on the key voter issue of abortion. Musk has been an ever-present sidekick for Trump since his election victory in November, inviting him to watch a rocket launch in Texas by his SpaceX company. Trump has selected the South African-born tycoon and fellow ally Vivek Ramaswamy to head the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, through which the pair have promised to deliver billions of dollars of cuts in federal spending. However, with Musk’s businesses all having varying degrees of interactions with US and foreign governments, his new position also raises concerns about conflict of interest. The president-elect has nominated several people close to Musk for roles in his administration, including investor David Sacks as the so-called AI and crypto czar. Meanwhile, billionaire astronaut Jared Isaacman, who has collaborated with Musk’s SpaceX, was named the head of US space agency NASA. On the heels of releasing a brand new M4 MacBook Pro , Apple might be looking into the potential of launching its own branded smart TV . If that rumor's accurate , it could very well shake up the foundation of the TV market. The rumor, which comes via Mark Gurman of Bloomberg fame, does note that an Apple smart TV is still very much in the conceptual stages, meaning it's an idea being floated around within the company's headquarters. The accuracy of the claims are unknowable, but it's certainly not the first time Apple's looked into making its own smart TVs. Both in the 2000s and in the early 2010s, an Apple-branded TV concept was heavily championed by none other than Steve Jobs himself. It would obviously fall by the wayside as the company's Apple TV 4K streaming device took the world by storm — and still remains one of the best streaming devices in the market. An Apple TV does kind of make sense for the brand if you really think about it. Apple's largely in the business of selling you screens upon screens in the form of iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, and iMacs. But I'm here to push back against any early hype, because all I see in the Apple smart TV concept is a disaster waiting in the wings. A lackluster interface ruled by Apple Intelligence Smart TVs these days have one major thing in common: AI chips with plenty of their own pros and cons across everything from upscaling to audio enhancements. I've already written several guides on which TV settings to change where necessary; plenty of them deal with these AI features. That's because most of these settings tend to mess with the picture quality and performance, often ruining the viewing experience. There's no doubt Apple would take an opportunity like designing of a new smart TV to promote Apple Intelligence with its own set of AI enhancements, which will probably amount to little more than is necessary. And while AI would be a hard pill to swallow for me in regard to an Apple smart TV, I think most dire of all for the proposed product would be tvOS serving as its main interface. While tvOS does have the benefit of being largely ad-free —minus of course Apple-branded adverts — it's not exactly the most streamlined of interfaces out there. Even in the Google TV vs Roku bout featuring two of the very best TV interfaces right now, there's still a lot to consider in terms of compatible apps and free content — which, if you were wondering, Google TV dominates with. As for Apple's tvOS, when it comes to free channels and content, you're left to your own devices, i.e. free apps like Tubi or Pluto TV . Then there's the question of gaming. Would Apple be able to meet the needs of gamers in a robust design that's not too expensive? Because for all my distaste in the interface, it could be a ripe as leading Apple's smart TV into becoming one of the best gaming TVs now that Apple is beginning to take the pastime more seriously. Over-inflated pricing in a budget OLED era The biggest issue I have with a potential Apple smart TV is the inevitably high asking price the company would slap on its new offering. Apple launched its Vision Pro headset earlier this year to an astronomical $3,499, locking out many would-be buyers and even those ever-so-slightly interested in the technology. There's no doubt it will favor a similarly high premium for a TV, whether OLED or not. But if Apple were to launch an OLED TV, it would prove even more devastating. The best OLED TVs come as some of the most sought-after displays in the market with, as you might guess, some of the highest prices primarily because they offer the best picture performance. Over the past few years, however, OLED TVs are starting to get cheaper ever so slightly. You can see it in the launch of cheaper models from lesser-known brands, like the $700 Sansui OLED TV that's got everyone abuzz. LG and Samsung also have two value-oriented OLED series in the LG B4 OLED and Samsung S85D. Inviting an Apple OLED TV into the market could drive the price up on these other OLED TVs given Apple's sheer dominance in the tech industry. It may even make other brands that have yet to enter the OLED space, like Amazon and Roku , think twice about trying. Both of those companies launched their first Mini-LED TVs this year. Maybe Apple sticks with its Apple TV 4K set-top box for a long while and skips the TV boat entirely. It all depends on how well its smart home control does, according to Gurman, and that too will have some hefty competition in the form of Amazon's new Echo Show 21 . More from Tom's Guide
