Javed Rana reviews progress on development activities in PoonchThe Finance Ministry is conducting a survey of 40,000 people in the government's 10,000-baht cash handout scheme to assess its impact on the economy and society. According to finance permanent secretary Lavaron Sangsnit, the survey is expected to be completed by the end of this month. This is the first detailed survey to examine the actual impact of a stimulus cash handout, seeking insights into its effects on the economy and society, rather than relying on speculation, he said. Mr Lavaron said the survey uses a large sample size to ensure the results reflect the true impact of the programme, helping to determine whether it is a worthwhile initiative. For the survey process, the ministry hired Suan Dusit University to conduct a survey of handout recipients, focusing on their spending behaviour. The survey is conducted independently. To assess the impact on entrepreneurs, the ministry commissioned the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce for a survey. In addition, he said the ministry and the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) will use population census data from the National Statistical Office, which coincidentally conducted its census during the same period as the ministry surveys. The ministry and NESDC plan to analyse the data from the National Statistical Office as part of their study. The cash handout was originally intended to be a one-time distribution for individuals aged 16 and older through a digital wallet, with the government creating a platform to support it. The total cost was projected to exceed 500 billion baht. However, there were objections from various parties regarding its economic suitability and legal validity, especially from the Bank of Thailand, which disagreed with the indiscriminate distribution of funds. The central bank suggested the money should only be given to those in need, such as vulnerable groups in society. The government adjusted the programme by setting conditions for eligibility. Recipients cannot have monthly income exceeding 70,000 baht nor savings in excess of 500,000 baht. The distribution is being carried out in phases, starting with holders of state welfare cards who registered via the government's Tang Rat app, totalling 14.4 million people. The first phase has a budget of around 144 billion baht. The cash distribution to state welfare cardholders began in September. As of the end of November, 1.44 million individuals had received the 10,000-baht handout. However, there are still 75,400 eligible individuals who have not completed the required steps, such as linking their PromptPay accounts. These individuals must complete the process by Dec 19, which is the final opportunity to receive the cash. After that deadline, this portion of the targeted group will be considered as opting to decline the handout, according to the ministry.
Making a clean sweep in West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday won all six Assembly seats in the by-elections. With this victory, the Mamata Banerjee-led party has further consolidated its position in the State Assembly. The bypolls were held in six constituencies — Sitai, Madarihat, Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur and Taldangra — on November 13 after the respective sitting MLAs, who had won the seats in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, resigned. In Sitai (north Bengal) and Haroa (south Bengal), TMC candidates clocked a victory margin of over one lakh votes. Continuing its winning streak of Lok Sabha poll victory, the TMC retained five Assembly seats and wrested Madarihat seat from the BJP, which had cemented its control in the constituency in the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections. This time, the electoral contest was viewed as a litmus test for the TMC, which is facing protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The body of the on-duty doctor was found inside the seminar room of the emergency building of the hospital on August 9. With the TMC cementing its dominance in West Bengal politics, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister and party supremo, thanked voters on social media. “I would like to thank ‘Maa, Mati, Manush’. Your blessings will help us continue working for the people,” Banerjee posted. “We are custodians of the people, not zamindars ,” she said. Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s second-in-command, also took to social media to congratulate all six TMC candidates – Sangita Roy, Jayprakash Toppo, Sanat Dey, Rabiul Islam, Sujoy Hazra and Falguni Singhababu – for their victories against BJP candidates. “A special thanks to the people of Madarihat for giving us the opportunity to serve you for the first time. I bow before the people of West Bengal for democratically dismantling the Bangla Birodhis , their fake narratives and reaffirming their trust in us,” Abhishek said in a post on ‘X’. BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar downplayed the significance of the by-election results. “Bypoll results cannot serve as a reliable indicator. Whether the people are with the Trinamool Congress or not will be reflected in the upcoming Assembly elections,” said Majumdar, adding that his party is hopeful of winning the 2026 Assembly polls. Biden wrong to choose his son over his countryHyderabad: The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has called for special subsidy on commercial electric vehicles operating in the state. The demand comes after the Telangana government issued a GO on November 16 exempting electric vehicles from road tax registration fees until December 31, 2026. Appreaciating the Telangana government’s decision, the TGPWU president, Shaik Salauddin said that the decision is a positive step towards promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation in the state. To substantiate the demand for special subsidy on electric vehicles, the TGPWU president said, “To further support the adoption of electric vehicles by gig and platform workers, we humbly request the government to provide a 50 percent special subsidy for the purchase of commercial electric vehicles, including delivery partners, e-rickshaws and goods carriers and taxis and tourist cabs.” Addressing the Telangana government, the TGPWU president went on to add that several gig and platform workers including delivery agents and cab drivers, rely on their vehicles for daily income. Saluddin stressed that shifting to electric vehicles would be helpful in reducing operational costs and environmental impact. However, the high upfront cost of EVs poses a significant barrier for these workers. A 50 percent subsidy would make EVs more accessible and contribute to the government’s goals of reducing pollution and promoting green mobility.

The 6-foot-5 guard transferred from Missouri after four seasons at Colorado State and has had an immediate impact in Madison. Tonje opened the season by scoring 23 points against Holy Cross and was nearly unstoppable in a 103-88 win over No. 17 Arizona last week. The graduate scored 41 points — two off the Wisconsin record — by hitting 4 of 6 from 3-point range and 21 of 22 free throws. Tonje is averaging 23.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, helping Wisconsin earn its first ranking of the season in the AP Top 25 this week. Trey Kaufman-Renn, Purdue. Jeremy Clarkson has backpedalled on his previous comments about why he bought his farm, saying he thought it would be a “better PR story if I said I bought it to avoid paying tax”. The TV presenter and journalist defied doctors’ orders by joining thousands of farmers in London on Tuesday to protest against agricultural inheritance tax changes. The 64-year-old, who fronts Prime Video’s Clarkson’s Farm, which documents the trials of farming on his land in Oxfordshire, wrote in a post on the Top Gear website in 2010: “I have bought a farm. There are many sensible reasons for this: Land is a better investment than any bank can offer. The government doesn’t get any of my money when I die. And the price of the food that I grow can only go up.” Clarkson also told the Times in 2021 that avoiding inheritance tax was “the critical thing” in his decision to buy land. Addressing the claim in a new interview with The Times, the former Top Gear presenter said: “I never did admit why I really bought it.” The fan of game bird shooting added: “I wanted to have a shoot – I was very naive. I just thought it would be a better PR story if I said I bought it to avoid paying tax.” Clarkson was among the thousands who took to the streets this week to protest over the changes in the recent Budget to impose inheritance tax on farms worth more than £1 million and he addressed the crowds at the march in central London. He told the newspaper he is not happy to be the public face of the movement, saying: “It should be led by farmers.” The presenter said he does not consider himself a farmer because there are “so many basic jobs” which he cannot do, but he feels his role is to “report on farming”. Earlier this month, it was confirmed Clarkson’s Farm, which has attracted huge attention to his Diddly Squat farm shop, had been renewed for a fifth series. Asked whether the issue behind the tax protest is that rural poverty is hidden, Clarkson agreed and said his programme was not helping to address the situation. “One of the problems we have on the show is we’re not showing the poverty either, because obviously on Diddly Squat there isn’t any poverty”, he said. “But trust me, there is absolute poverty. I’m surrounded by farmers. I’m not going out for dinner with James Dyson. “It’s people with 200 acres, 400 acres. Way past Rachel Reeves’s threshold. They are f*****.” The newspaper columnist also presents Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? on ITV. The Grand Tour, his motoring show with former Top Gear colleagues Richard Hammond and James May, ended in September. Discussing whether he might move into politics, Clarkson said: “I’d be a terrible political leader, hopeless. “I’m a journalist at heart, I prefer throwing rocks at people than having them thrown at me.” However, he said he would be “100% behind any escalation” after the farmers’ march. Clarkson revealed last month he had undergone a heart procedure to have stents fitted after experiencing a “sudden deterioration” in his health which brought on symptoms of being “clammy”, a “tightness” in his chest and “pins and needles” in his left arm. He said in a Sunday Times column that one of his arteries was “completely blocked and the second of three was heading that way” and doctors said he was perhaps “days away” from becoming very ill. Asked if he is thinking about retiring, the Doncaster-born celebrity said: “Probably not. It depends when you die, I always think. “You’d be surprised, us Northerners are made of strong stuff.”
BERLIN (AP) — Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on Feb. 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalize the country’s stagnant economy. Musk's guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag —a sister publication of POLITICO owned by the Axel Springer Group — published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month he supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country," Musk wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality.” The Tesla Motors CEO also wrote that his investment in Germany gave him the right to comment on the country's condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel , has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. An ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the technology billionaire challenged in his opinion piece the party's public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper's own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Musk's social media platform, X. “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print," Eva Marie Kogel wrote. A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Musk’s opinion piece. “Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong,” Burgard wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Burgard — who is due to take over on Jan. 1 — said in a joint statement that the discussion over Musk's piece was "very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression.” “This will continue to determine the compass of the “world” in the future. We will develop “Die Welt” even more decisively as a forum for such debates,” they wrote to dpa.Empowering Global Talent: Ayda Akalin Joins Better You by Neeraj to Reveal Secrets of U.S. Immigration Success
KOLHAPUR: While the suspense over whether the caretaker chief minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, is disappointed after the meeting in New Delhi with Union home minister Amit Shah is yet to be cleared, the health of Shiv Sena chief Shinde, who cancelled all his scheduled meetings and returned to his native village Dare Tamb in Satara on Friday, is reported to have deteriorated and he is kept under the medical observation of doctors. This news comes just hours after Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat on Saturday revealed that Shinde is expected to make a significant political decision within the next 24 hours, as suspense mounts over who will be the next chief minister to lead the Mahayuti-ruled state. Civil Surgeon for Satara, Dr Yuvraj Karpe, said, "CM Shinde is facing a respiratory tract infection and is having fever, an itchy throat along with weakness. His pulse rate and blood pressure are normal. Blood samples were checked and don't show any symptoms of dengue or malaria. He was given an injectable dose on Saturday evening for bacterial infection (Monocef and Beplex saline 100ml)." When asked about the reason behind the health deterioration of Shinde, Dr Karpe said, "He travelled a lot in the last month and also worked on his farm, resulting in exertion. We have suggested he rest for the next two days due to weakness. CM Shinde started feeling ill from Friday night. He felt better on Saturday morning but again at noon he started having a fever. We have stationed an ambulance, physician, a surgeon, and a brother along with medicines equipped in the ambulance," added Dr Karpe. Meanwhile, former minister from Shiv Sena, Deepak Kesarkar, arrived at Dare Tamb village to meet CM Shinde on Saturday but had to return without meeting the CM after learning about his health condition. Earlier on Friday, the Shiv Sena chief left for his native place a day after meeting Union home minister Amit Shah at his residence in Delhi. Other Mahayuti allies, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, and Bharatiya Janata Party chief JP Nadda were also present at the meeting.COPS have launched an urgent hunt for an 11-year-old schoolboy who "sexually assaulted" a woman in broad daylight. The young boy, wearing blue jeans and a black bomber jacket, was today being hunted by cops following the incident. A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said today: "Police officers are appealing for witnesses after a woman was sexually assaulted in Woodford. The visit underscored the importance of bolstering the bilateral relationship between Australia and Thailand, with a special focus on tourism safety. This collaborative discussion took place at the Phuket Provincial Governor’s Reception Room and was aimed at enhancing the safety of Australian tourists visiting the island, as well as strengthening the economic and political ties between both nations. During the meeting, Ambassador McDonald praised the efforts of Phuket’s local authorities in prioritizing the safety and well-being of tourists. In particular, she noted the ongoing efforts to ensure that Australian visitors to the island remain well-supported and protected during their stay. McDonald remarked that more than 600,000 Australian tourists have visited Thailand this year, with Phuket emerging as one of the most popular destinations for these visitors. “Phuket’s proactive measures have been incredibly valuable in ensuring the safety and security of Australian tourists,” said McDonald. “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Phuket authorities for their dedication in making the island a safe destination for travelers.” The discussions also included practical approaches to improve safety measures, such as enhanced disaster preparedness. The importance of maintaining robust local governance and ensuring a secure environment for both residents and visitors was highlighted. With Australian tourists constituting a significant portion of international arrivals to Phuket, it is vital for both the local government and the Australian Embassy to continue to collaborate closely on safety-related initiatives. In addition to safety measures, Vice Governor Ronnarong emphasized Phuket’s unwavering commitment to creating a welcoming atmosphere for all tourists. He reaffirmed that Australian nationals are among the top five international groups visiting the island and expressed confidence that ongoing safety initiatives would continue to improve the overall experience for these visitors. The meeting also featured remarks from Phuket Provincial Police Commander, Sinlert Sukhum, who reminded attendees about the importance of obeying traffic laws to ensure the safety of tourists. He particularly pointed out that tourists renting vehicles must be properly licensed, use helmets when necessary, follow speed limits, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol. A significant portion of the talks also revolved around disaster preparedness, particularly in relation to Phuket’s vulnerability to natural calamities. Sopon Thongsai, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, provided updates on the latest initiatives to improve the island’s disaster response. Notably, two new tsunami warning buoys have been deployed in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean. These buoys are designed to detect any potential tsunami activity, enabling timely evacuation alerts to safeguard both locals and tourists. Thongsai’s presentation highlighted the government’s commitment to public safety and boosting confidence in Phuket’s preparedness for emergencies. The disaster preparedness update further solidified Phuket’s reputation as a responsible and forward-thinking destination. By taking a proactive approach to safety, the province aims to ensure that visitors can enjoy their holidays with peace of mind, knowing that local authorities are well-equipped to handle any potential crises. As part of her visit, Ambassador McDonald took the opportunity to meet with members of the Australian community living in Phuket. The meeting was held at Soho Pool Club, where discussions centered on the growing tourism and business opportunities between the two nations. McDonald expressed her optimism about future collaborations and emphasized the significant role that people-to-people connections play in deepening the relationship between Australia and Thailand. In another symbolic gesture of goodwill, McDonald, alongside Kirsten Fletcher, the Australian Consul-General in Phuket, contributed a smart TV to a local school through the Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation. This charitable donation served as a demonstration of the ongoing cultural and community exchange between the two countries. The foundation, which aims to give back to the local community, plays an essential role in promoting Australian ties with Phuket’s residents. Ambassador McDonald’s visit to Phuket highlights the strong ties between Australia and Thailand and the shared commitment to tourism safety and cultural exchange. As one of the top travel destinations in Thailand, Phuket’s emphasis on tourist safety is essential for sustaining its reputation as a preferred location for Australian tourists. With more than 600,000 Australians visiting Thailand in 2024, Phuket remains a key player in this dynamic tourism exchange. By prioritizing the safety of tourists and working closely with local and international authorities, both the Australian and Thai governments are ensuring that Phuket continues to be a thriving and secure destination for travelers. Looking ahead, both nations have expressed their enthusiasm for strengthening this partnership, with a shared vision for a prosperous and safe future for tourism in the region. As Phuket remains one of the most popular destinations for international tourists, the ambassador’s visit marks another step toward solidifying its place as a top choice for travelers from Australia, and around the world. The ongoing efforts to improve safety measures, along with the proactive collaboration between local and Australian authorities, pave the way for a brighter and safer tourism future for Phuket.
